LUFFIELD SALES TEAM TRIUMPH AGAIN AT NATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS The Sales Team at Luffield Cars have again won the title of Sales Team of the Year for the Central Region at the National Citroen Dealer Excellence Awards. Having secured the title in 2011 and 2012 the Citroen Dealership located on Belton Road in Loughborough strived throughout the year to try and make it three in a row. The Excellence Awards programme recognises and rewards the most successful individuals and dealerships within the Citroen Dealer Network. The success is primarily based on the Customer Satisfaction Score achieved by the dealership over the previous twelve months, but other key measurements are also included to help work out who is the best of the best.

“Although we were able to see the monthly results, the final scoring was kept secret until the award evening” said Dealer Principle, Paul McNeil. “We knew that we were one of the finalists, but with such a high standard achieved by other dealers in the network, we couldn’t be sure we had won until it was announced”. The awards were hosted by comedian and ventriloquist, Nina Conti, at a glittering Gala dinner held at the exclusive Grove Hotel in Hertfordshire. The Circus themed evening included displays by acrobats and jugglers and culminated in a breath taking fire routine.

FREE ADULT CYCLING COURSES IN LEICESTERSHIRE Free Adult Cycling Courses are taking place across Leicestershire. The courses are taking place around the county and aim to help anybody over the age of 16 feel more confident on two wheels and make more journeys by bike. The courses, which take place for two hours a week for five weeks, are ideal for people who have never been on a bike before, riders who want to improve their confidence and people who haven't cycled for years. Cycling is a great way to stay in shape, save money on the costs of running a car and an ideal way to explore the county. Courses running in the Charnwood area include: Loughborough College, Radmoor Road on Saturdays 10am – 12noon 19th, 26th April & 3rd, 10th, 17th May 2014. Course are also running in July/August and October/ November Quorn, St Bartholomew Primary School on Thursdays from 6-8pm 15th, 22nd, 29th May & 5th, 12th June Syston, Watermead park, King Lear's Lake car park on Saturdays from 10am – 12 noon 29th March & 5th,12th,19th,26th April. THE PUB WORLD MOVES ON For a number of years now public houses have been closing across the country. We are given to understand that this is due in no small part to the cheap alcohol available from supermarkets and the pubs customers have found it a lot cheaper to drink at home.

One of the casualties has been the Ox Lea on Anson Road. A planning application to turn it into a retail outlet is currently with Charnwood Borough Council. Another more recent casualty had been the Jolly Farmers on Iveshead Road, but this has just undergone a complete refurbishment and change of ownership and reopened on 28th February as a traditional public house, one of the new owners aims is to establish a dart’s and dominoes teams. The pub was originally a farm but in 1851 was opened as a public house run by William Kirkland until 1867 when it was taken over by John Kirkland a presumably a son. A book about the history of the pub is held behind the bar should you wish to take a look. This was largely compiled by Michael Wortley. I am sure if any residents have any further photos or information the new landlord will be willing to incorporate them. The White Horse public house on Ashby Road West is currently undergoing a major refurbishment even a name change, it is now known as The Horse and it is hoped that it will re-open in time for Easter. I understand that it will be serving hot meals. With its situation on the main A512 this may attract passing trade as well as local business.

The event was open to all businesses in Shepshed and gave everyone an opportunity to share their thoughts on the Chancellor’s 2014 Budget. We were joined by TaxAssist Accountants who gave their views on the announcements made. As regular readers will know I have worked with Shepshed County Councillor, Christine Radford, to set up a Shepshed Business Forum and it is hoped that this can, in time, become the Shepshed Chamber of Trade. This would really give Shepshed businesses, large or small, a unified voice on local policies and development affecting them and the town. If you are interested in helping with this please do contact me or Christine.

I was delighted to attend the launch night of the Shepshed Show 2014. It has been my pleasure to support the Shepshed Show Committee members from early 2013 and this year’s show looks as if it will be even bigger and better. The boxing display by members of the Shepshed Boxing Club was terrific and left me feeling exhausted! Good luck to everyone involved in organising the 2014 Show which is to be held on Saturday 21 June. And, as we said at the launch night, this is Shepshed’s Show so please do get involved and lend a hand. Thank you to all residents who have contacted me about continuing planning matters, particularly with queries related to flooding. Whilst we are all grateful that, so far, we have escaped the terrible flooding elsewhere in the UK there is no doubt that we cannot be complacent. I mentioned in last month’s column that I had been in touch with the Department for Environment,

Food and Rural Affairs about the legislation which covers the maintenance of drainage measures installed in new developments. I have now sent an update on that to the Town Council. I am also due to meet the Environment Agency soon to discuss concerns about flooding across my constituency. Finally I am looking forward to visiting the Shepshed Dynamo FC ground on Saturday 1st March. Shepshed Dynamo Youth and Junior FC will be celebrating the creation of two new youth teams – thanks to a £5,000 grant from the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity – by staging a match which will give me the chance to meet the young new footballers and the volunteers who give their time to the club every week.

NICKY MORGAN MP MEETS SHEPSHED’S FAMILIES AT LOCAL ASDA STORE Nicky Morgan MP visited Asda Shepshed yesterday, where she met customers and heard first-hand about how they are juggling household budgets and their aspirations for 2014.

Customers discussed a variety of topics with Nicky and provided insights into how they feel about the cost of living, the economy and household finances, as well as Government policies and social issues. Asda arranged the visit as part of its ongoing Community Life scheme, which has seen the supermarket take steps to place its stores at the heart of their local communities, including opening up their doors for use by community groups and fundraising for local good causes. Nicky commented “Yesterday’s listening event was a great opportunity to continue the conversations with local families I have on a regular basis and I am grateful to Asda for setting this event up. The cost of living is a topic that Shepshed residents regularly raise with me. As a Government we are working to ensure that the economic recovery benefits everyone, so it was particularly useful to see and hear first-hand how families are managing their household finances and their level of optimism for the future.”

SHEPSHED COMMUNITY SPEEDWATCH

Members of Shepshed Lions Club and their partners celebrated the 27th Annual Charter Dinner at the Carillon Rooms, Loughborough on the evening of Saturday 8th February 2014. Eight guests who are members of the Lions Club of Domont, France, joined the members of the Shepshed Club. The two clubs have been twinned together for 20years. Other local Lions Clubs were also represented at the annual dinner, Entertainment was provided by Andy Walker. The Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders have been very busy during February giving up their time to support the Community and East Midlands Ambulance Service. They have together provided emergency cover and attended incidents in Shepshed, Coalville, Loughborough and Belton. The team covered 76 hours duty and attended a number of incidents. If anyone is interested in joining the scheme, or wish to make a donation or provide sponsorship to the scheme please contact the scheme coordinator Lion Bob Lilley on 01509 508265 or by e-mail at thelilleys15@gmail.com. Two members of the scheme went to a meeting at East Midlands Ambulance Service HQ in Nottingham and were successful in confirming that the scheme will take possession of a fully liveried Skoda Fabia car for use by the volunteers. The car will be delivered to the team in mid to late April. A further press release will be issued when the vehicle arrives.

With Easter now on the horizon Shepshed Lions Club will be conducting their annual Easter Egg Raffle in the town. Keep an eye out for the giant Easter Eggs in the local public houses and some business premises. Every penny raised goes to charitable good causes.

SHEPSHED LOROS SUPPORT GROUP Thank you to all those who made the launch event of the Shepshed Town Team in January such a successful evening. Our next meeting will take a closer look at Heritage, establishing Town Trails, the protection of important buildings, the impact of shop fronts, linking with the National Forest, cycle trails and enhanced signage. Please join us at Shepshed High School at 6.00pm on Monday 17th March for light refreshments and networking, informative speakers and a chance to discuss the aspects and decide on priorities.

PLANS TO OPEN UP NEW CO-OP STORE AT FORMER OX LEA PUB A thank you tea was once again held at Shepshed Bowls Club on Sat February 15th, where the group handed over a cheque for £375000 to Loros. We have been fund raising for 28 years and as ever are thanks go to the people of Shepshed for their continued support.

The former Ox Lea pub on Anson Road which could become Shepshed’s second Co-op store. There has been a planning application submitted by Paragon Property Developments to Charnwood Borough Council to change the use of the pub into a convenience store and a first floor residential unit. The store could create up to 23 new jobs.

pring is on its way and hopefully the rain will abate soon, giving us all a chance to get out into our gardens. My mission for the spring is to create new planting areas in my own garden and reinvigorate the tired borders in my client’s gardens. I took on my current garden a year ago when we bought an old house in need of renovation. It’s very traditional - long and narrow with a lawn, gravelled areas and a veg patch, flanked by neat Privet hedges. The formal layout is practical but it lacks style and is crying out for a vibrant injection of colour. Skinny little borders rarely offer enough space for a good range of plants, there fine if all you want is a lavender hedge but to create a dramatic planting scheme I recommend a minimum depth of 1.2m. They don’t have to be long & straight, curved island borders work well too. Mine will be contemporary geometric blocks to work with the existing layout of the paths. Whether I’m creating new borders or reinvigorating an existing one, I dig over the soil adding plenty of compost and fertiliser (such as Growmore) to loosen up the compacted ground, improve

In low maintenance gardens, I discourage future weed growth by laying membrane on the soil surface. A mulch of gravel or bark covers the unsightly membrane when complete. With the hard work done I’ll progress to the exciting bit – choosing the plants. Perennials and grasses are my passion. I’ve been collecting and growing unusual varieties for years. I’m always tempted by something when I visit a nursery and working as a professional grower, producing tens of thousands of plants each year, I’m constantly tempted to add to my collection! I’m not unique; many of us are seduced by plants that are looking at their best, generally in the spring and summer. The down side of this is that the garden can be devoid of colour for the other 6 months of the year! It can also create a very messy patchwork of colour and shape with lots of mismatched individual plants all muddled up together. Visiting

a garden centre or nursery regularly and purchasing a few at a time will help to build up a good year-round palette of plants. Whilst planting in blocks of 3-5 of the same plant will give a more cohesive and stylish look. So with that in mind, which plants to choose? Well to start off with, all borders need some structural planting to act as the backbone of the border. I do this by selecting key shrubs like Viburnum ‘Eve Price’, Choisya ‘White Dazzler’ or Box balls (see more examples below). These are evergreen so will look good even in the depths of winter. Once these are in I add the vibrant colour by Inter-planting with bulbs, perennials, flowering shrubs and ornamental grasses. Later on Bill used just a few of his own images to demonstrate various ways of enhancing and improving images using various different types of software. He has an excellent website where many of the pictures the club saw can be seen at www.billallsopp.co.uk The following week 15 of the Club’s members took part in the “4 New Images Competition” in which each entrant entered four digital images that had not been seen in any club competitions before. Judge Hazel Manning entertained the members with an excellent appraisal of each image and awarded each a mark out of 20. When the scores were added up Club Secretary Brian Negus turned out to be the winner, for the second year running, with a score of 72 points, Alan Harris took second place with 71 and Alan Blood third place with 68.

Even where planning applications have already been approved such as the 66 dwellings off Iveshead Road, details of the water runoff and pipe sizes has still not been cleared by the Environment Agency much to the concern of local residents. Attention has been drawn to the nationwide issue of responsibility for maintenance of balancing tanks which are being proposed on new developments and who will assume responsibility for their maintenance once developers have left the site. I fear that whichever Government is in power the pressure for housing is uppermost on their agenda. Housing starts

Barrow-upon-Soar Parish Council failed in its High Court challenge to stop a developer from building 300 homes in the village. The judge ruled that the Secretary of State was entitled to approve the development. Traffic Wardens have been out in Shepshed during the early mornings and evenings, recently due to the number of cars parking on yellow lines. I understand a number of parking violation tickets have been issued for parking on yellow lines. Loughborough Town Hall has been chosen for the initial hearing into Charnwood’s future development. Charnwood Borough Council sent its Core Strategy, which sets out how the Borough will meet future growth, including thousands of homes planned next to Garendon Park, for inspection last December. In January, the authority received a letter from Planning Inspector Kevin Ward, who has been appointed by the Planning Inspectorate, saying he has “identified significant issues in relation to the duty of co-operation and soundness in terms of the overall provision for housing” and would like to hold early hearing sessions on these matters.

These hearings will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, March 19th and 20th, and will be open to members of the public. Both sessions will start at 9.30am and are scheduled to last all day. Mr Ward will use these initial hearings to focus on the council’s Duty to Co-operate and overall provision for housing. The theme this year is Sport, one of the clubs at the launch was the Boxing Club. I helped and supported them with their appeal and we were successful in getting that decision reversed. I look forward to another enjoyable day in June and hope the weather is kinder this year. I am pleased that Shepshed Town Council has set their Precept with no increase again for this year, and the Borough Council at their meeting on 24th February have also set their Precept, for the 4th year running with no increase. Shepshed has also been allocated a £50,000 to improve the shopping experience in Shepshed. Detail on this will be available later. A grant of £8,731 has been earmarked for Shepshed Volunteer Centre. GIRLGUIDING SHEPSHED URGES MORE PEOPLE TO VOLUNTEER Girlguiding Shepshed is calling on residents of the Shepshed area to give some time to allow local girls and young women to enjoy a wide range of exciting activities, as well as acquire new skills and experiences themselves. Girlguiding Shepshed needs volunteers to give time to support their local groups. There are a huge number of opportunities to get involved in addition to working directly with groups in Shepshed. Girlguiding has an ongoing campaign to seek out more adult members. The organisation is hugely popular, with more than half a million members and volunteers around the UK. Louise is a Brownie Leader in Shepshed. She said ” Volunteering with Girlguiding gives me a huge sense of achievement when I think of how much the girls in my unit have grown in confidence in the time I’ve known them. DOG MESS I am repeatedly asked, ‘What are you doing about dog mess’. Over the years a number of pleas issued by Shepshed Town Council and myself for dog owners to clean up after their dogs has gone unheeded.

The majority of dog owners are responsible; it is the minority that spoil it. It is the law for dog owners to clean up. Please put your dog’s mess in a plastic bag and take it home with you. Do not leave it hanging on branches or in hedges. It is not allowed for you to put it into black bins left out for collection at the road side. There are dog bins around the town, some say not enough, but you are allowed to put it in to any litter bin, as long as it is properly bagged.

SHEPSHED CARERS - 20 YEARS ON Back in 1994, two Shepshed girls, Sarah Pollard and Pauline Graves set up what has become to be known as Shepshed Carers. Just the two of them won a contract, and from small acorns a large oak tree grew. This has not been a quick fix, but a gradual build-up of the business. There are now 135 employees working as a Workers Co-operative, looking after 400+ people, some have 4 or more visits per day, which in some cases needs 2 carers. This could total over 4500 visits to clients.

is taking on the mountainous challenge to raise money for a charity close to his heart the Jessica Hope Foundation which aims to raise awareness of brain cancer. Will, 40, has had a special wheelchair developed and built to help in his world record attempt to tackle three of the highest peaks in England, Wales and Scotland. Will said: “I have done fundraising challenges in the past including half-marathons but The Three Peaks is considered a real challenge by many able-bodied fundraisers. By attempting it in a wheelchair this will hopefully inspire other disabled people and able-bodied people to push themselves and show that anything is possible.” Will is taking on the challenge to raise money and awareness of the Jessica Hope Foundation which was set up in 2013 after the death of 16-year-old Jessica from an aggressive form of brain cancer, Anaplastic Astrocytoma.

Will added: “Jess was an extremely close family friend oto see a 16-year-old girl suffer and ultimately lose her battle has affected everyone who was close to her greatly. As a result, I wanted to set myself a challenge to raise money for an incredibly important cause. Jess was an inspirational young woman and by doing this challenge I want to spread the message that a disability or illness should not prevent you from doing the things you love and enjoy.” Will’s support team includes colleagues Kevin Stanley, Chris Cary and Karl Harrison along with friends and family. CRASH ON THE A512 Yet again there has been another crash on the A512 between Tickow Lane and Swannymote Road. This section of road is regularly closed due to accidents on this section of road. The latest accident happened on Wednesday 26th February resulting in tail backs in both directions. Police were called at 6.59am to the incident which involved one vehicle. An ambulance and the fire brigade attended the scene as it appeared the driver was trapped inside the vehicle. The driver was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre to be checked over and the road reopened at 8.35am. As County Councillor for Shepshed I will be asking the County Highways department, if they are looking at improving this section of highway due to the number of accidents.
