Top Tips On How To Spring Clean Your Home
QUORN COUNTRY HOTEL COMPETITION
Coming Soon - Win A Wedding Reception Worth Over £2,500 !
WELCOME
SPRING HAS SPRUNG! It’s such a pleasure to see green leaves on the trees and bluebells in the woodlands, it makes me realise how lucky I am to be back living in Leicestershire, such a picturesque county. This month’s magazine has a spring feel and gives tips on cost effective spring cleaning as well as some lovely recipes! Children have the opportunity to win a personalised T-Shirt from Norwood Press. This magazine also marks the arrival of our new printing press which has enabled us to print in full colour throughout. This new press also means we can be extremely competitive for all printing work! We are so confident, that we think we can beat most business printing quotes! So if you have business cards, flyers, menus or community newspapers printed why not see if we can print it for less? Many thanks again to all our lovely advertisers and contributors, we try to include as many community/school articles as possible so please keep sending them in. I am personally unable to get out and about at present but if you contact 0800 6446 150 another member of the team will be able to assist you. I am still available on email and hope to be back out meeting with you and covering events after surgery in the summer. Enjoy your latest Community Eye magazine and I look forward to bringing you your June issue.

SEASONAL FEATURE
Spring Clean
I
t’s the time of year where the sun starts shining through the windows highlighting how much grime has built up over winter! If you’re anything like me you’ll have a bucket of various cleaning products all promising great results but I’ve been doing a little research and apparently I only need 3 things to bring my house back from the winter blues!
BICARBONATE OF SODA • Bicarb on a damp sponge removes grease easily from stove, back splash etc. • Also works great for carpet deodorising, just sprinkle onto carpet before going to bed and vacuum in the morning. • Better than any cleaner for cleaning baths and sinks. • Also for keeping pipes clean under the sink - pour about one quarter cup of baking soda down the drain with about 1 cup of vinegar, this makes a chemical reaction, then pour some hot water down the drain. • To minimise odours in your fridge, remove top from box of baking soda and place it on one of the shelves. From time to time stir contents. • To clean a scummy showerhead, pour 1/2 cup baking soda and 1 cup white distilled vinegar into a sandwich bag and tie it around the showerhead. Let this set for an hour after the bubbling has stopped. Remove the bag and then turn on the water.
WHITE VINEGAR (do not use on Marble and check on a small area out of sight first) • Clean the microwave by mixing 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar and 1/2 cup water in a microwavesafe bowl. Bring it to a rolling boil
inside the microwave. Baked-on food will be loosened, and odors will disappear. Wipe clean. • To clean a grease splattered oven door window, saturate it with full-strength white distilled vinegar. Keep the door open for 10 to 15 minutes before wiping with a sponge. • Get rid of lime deposits in a kettle by adding 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar to the water and letting it sit overnight. If more drastic action is needed, boil full-strength white distilled vinegar in the kettle a few minutes, let cool and rinse with plain water. • Remove stains from coffee and teacups by scrubbing them gently with equal parts of salt (or baking soda) and white distilled vinegar. Rinse clean.
• To make the toilet bowl sparkle, pour in a cup or more of diluted white distilled vinegar and let it sit several hours or overnight. Scrub well with the toilet brush and flush.
stain fades. Can be left overnight, then rinsed well and dried.
• Create your own window cleaning solution by combining 1 cup white distilled vinegar in a gallon of water and clean using newspaper. The ink from the print will give your windows a fantastic shine.
• Clean your microwave and remove odours. Place a cup 3/4 full of water with a couple tablespoons of lemon juice in the microwave. Heat to boiling. Don’t open the door for another 10 minutes. Then just wipe away food particles with a clean cloth and dry.
• To clean and disinfect baby toys add a good-sized splash of white distilled vinegar to soapy water.
• To clean tarnished brass, copper, and pewter, use a paste with equal amounts of white distilled vinegar and table salt.
• Clean scissors that have become sticky (after cutting tape, for instance) with a cloth dipped in undiluted white distilled vinegar.
• Discourage ants by spraying undiluted white distilled vinegar outside doorways and windowsills, around appliances and wherever you find the pests coming in.
LEMONS
• Clean the wheel of a can opener using white distilled vinegar and an old toothbrush. • To remove a label, or price tag, cover with a cloth soaked in white distilled vinegar. Leave the cloth on overnight and the label should slide off. • Get rid of limescale deposits on taps/shower heads by soaking a cloth or paper towel in white distilled vinegar and wrapping the area tightly. Let this sit for a couple of hours or overnight. (I find lemon juice work just as well and makes the bathroom smell great too!) • Spray shower doors with fullstrength white distilled vinegar after you’ve squeegeed the glass, or before you step in and turn on the water. It will help release the hard water deposits so they don’t remain on the glass.
When cleaning with lemons always rinse with warm soapy water and dry with a clean cloth afterward. One of the very few things you can’t clean with lemon juice is anything that is brass plated as the juice will damage the item. Aside from that, here is a list of items that can be cleaned with lemons. • Use a half lemon and salt to clean even the most heavily discoloured brass (real brass, not brass plated). Be careful with antiques. Always test a small spot before scrubbing away. • The same method can be used for copper items such has copper bottoms of pots. • You can also shine up your chrome taps or the chrome on older model cars with lemon and salt. • Diluted lemon juice not only cleans stains from chopping boards, but helps kill germs as well. Rub the juice full strength onto the stain and let sit until the
• Use lemon juice and an old toothbrush to scrub grout.
• Put a dilute solution of lemon juice in a spray bottle to clean laminate counter tops. Rinse with water and dry afterward. • Scrub grills and grates with lemon juice and salt. • Soak plastic food storage containers in dilute lemon juice to remove stains and odours. Add baking soda and scrub, rinse and dry. • Remove odours from your refrigerator with a half lemon on a saucer. Change once a week. • Clean food preparation smells from your hands with a dilute solution of water and lemon juice. • Clean hard water stains on glass shower doors with half a lemon. • A dilute lemon juice rinse for your hair cuts soap residue and leaves hair softer and shinier. • Lastly, apparently you can make a facial scrub of sugar and lemon juice for cleaner, softer skin! I haven’t tried this one!

SHEPSHED WI MEETING IN APRIL 2014 Shepshed WI members met for their April meeting and welcomed Mal Trot and his wife who told them about how at quite a young age he became interested in puppets, and for many years had a puppet company called Dragonfly Puppets. He brought along puppets that he has acquired or made himself and members were welcome to have a go with them. Maureen Walbey, who had been a delegate at the recent Annual Council Meeting in Leicester, gave a report on the meeting and gave details of the various events that will be taking place in the county to celebrate 100 years since the WI started. It was announced that Shepshed had won their first darts match against Castle Donington in the Federation competition and will now go on to play Thorpe Acre.
There will also be a cake stall in the Hallcroft on Friday 23rd May. The next meeting will be held on Thursday 1st May at Christchurch Methodist Church, Field Street, Shepshed, at 7.30 pm when the resolution which will be voted on at the forthcoming national meeting will be discussed. For further details contact Glenis on 01509 503677.

You can now also catch this service outside the Amber Rooms at the Rushes. The new timetables can be collected from our drivers or viewed and downloaded from the timetables section of our website www.winsoncoaches.co.uk Passengers can also be kept up to date on any changes via Facebook. LOCAL NEWS
LOROS FAMILY FUNDRAISER A Shepshed family is gearing up for a busy month as they prepare for two fundraising events to mark the tenth anniversary of their mum’s death. Kass Grimley died of cancer in May 2004 and spent her last days at LOROS hospice in Leicester. Kass’ children, Matthew, Vicky and Caroline decided to mark this anniversary and raise valuable funds to support the work of LOROS in the process. Songs for Kass Part II will take part at Christchurch Methodist Church in Shepshed on Saturday 24th May at 7.30pm. The venue is fitting as Kass was a long standing member of the congregation at Christchurch and many family events have been held there over
the years. The musical programme for the evening will be varied, covering some of Kass’ favourite music from well-known musicals, Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and religious pieces. The music chosen marks Kass’ long association with Christchurch G&S Society as a performer and Musical Director and also includes pieces that Kass enjoyed teaching to the many school children she taught during her career as a primary school teacher . Caroline has brought together a group of more than a dozen performers made up of family members and close family friends – many of whom are current members of Christchurch G&S Society. Tickets for this event are £7.50. Both events are expected to sell out so tickets should be booked in advance by calling 07973 677865.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Shepshed & the surrounding area and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I
get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

CHARNWOOD ROAD BAPTIST CHURCH UNVEIL NEW BANNER
F
or the last three years ladies of the church Banner Group have been putting together a new banner which involved the whole church fellowship. Pam Frost got the idea when she visited a church in Newbury and saw an enormous banner which had been crafted by lots of different people. Pam got to work designing and preparing a plan for the banner and in April 2011 the ladies of the Banner Group met and started to put together kits consisting of a square of material together with buttons, beads, embroidery thread etc., the only stipulation being that somewhere on the square there should be a cross. Members of the church, friends, family, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Girls Brigade and others were invited to take a kit home and return it when finished.

Have raised an amazing £1859.19 for local charity Wishes 4 Kids!
Wishes 4 Kids was created to grant wishes for children and youngsters in Leicestershire who are life limited, terminally ill, have experienced lifechanging physical or emotional traumas, have suffered major abuse or are diagnosed as HIV Positive. The Charity grants wishes for those of eighteen years and below and has already granted hundreds of wishes for local children.
Sam Graveling the Director of Lilliput Montessori, said ‘We chose Wishes 4 Kids for many reasons; not only has a member of our staff benefited from them but they are also a local charity who deliver a valuable service. We have chosen to continue supporting them and are planning more open days and BBQ’s with the possibility of a 3 legged parents race at Bradgate Park!’
Lilliput Montessori held open days, Christmas fetes, dress up and dress down days, cake sales and charged entry to their Christmas plays as well as using catalogue commission to reach this fantastic amount!
With the help of all the staff and children at Lilliput in Anstey, Glenfield, LFE, Whetstone and Coalville now even more children can have their wishes granted. Congratulations Lilliput!
By February 2013 all 962 squares had been returned by 159 stitchers and the Banner Group ladies began the assembly work which proved to be a mammoth task. By March 2014 all the squares had been stitched together, the completed size being 5’5” by 7’10”. A frame was made by church member Alan Todhunter and the banner fixed on. The banner was unveiled during the morning service on Sunday 13th April and it was a truly magnificent sight. Sue Sturmey was singled out as champion stitcher because she had stitched 127 squares and wooden spoons were awarded to Rev. Howard Ketton and Deacon Kenny Henry for being the last to return their squares. It was not all plain sailing with many frustrations but well worth the time and effort put in by everyone and will give much pleasure for many years to come.

SERENADE SPRINGS INTO SONG
T
he ladies of ‘Serenade’, Shepshed Women’s Community Choir, and guests, wowed the crowd at their Spring Concert on the 12th April at Shepshed High School. Under the baton of their Musical Director, Tom Stanyard, the choir sang a range of songs from their favourite shows, including the Lion King, Sound of Music, Mary Poppins and a medley from Les Miserable, which was so good it brought members of the audience to their feet. The evening was a mix of sing-a-long favourites and moving solos, accompanied on the piano by Vanessa Wright. The choir were joined by students from Shepshed High School and Hind Leys College who performed a range of musical treats, from the flautists who accompanied the choir in their rendition of ‘My Heart Will Go On’ from the movie ‘Titanic’, to Jack Cooling who played guitar and sang a wonderfully moving ‘I See Fire’ from the film ‘The Hobbit’. A number of ladies from the choir also performed polished solo pieces which were very well received and the audience were also rewarded with a fabulous solo from the Musical Director himself, who performed ‘Love Changes Everything’ from the musical
‘Aspects of Love’. As always the evening was a fundraising event, with homemade cakes being sold for charity and a quiz asking the audience to identify where the songs from the programme came from. The feedback from the audience was amazing with people commenting that it was the choir’s best show so far. The ladies also held a charity market stall on Loughborough Market on March 29th, which raised almost £200 which will go to their chosen charities; Derbys., Leics.& Rutland Air Ambulance and Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. It’s going to be a busy year, so look out for further details of Serenade’s future appearances, which include the popular Shepshed Show on 21st June 2014. The choir, of around 90 women, meet during school term time on Monday evenings at Shepshed High School at 7.30pm. For any ladies with connections to Shepshed, who are interested in joining the choir, please contact Keleigh Atkin on 07775 558219 or email Serenade at serenadeshepshed@rocketmail. com. Alternatively, feel free to pop along on the evening. More information about the choir can be found on their website www. serenadeshepshed.co.uk

We now have two permanent collection points set up, which we hope all building users will use. As well as on Sundays, the church is open every Friday morning for anyone wishing to drop off food.
THE FUTURE OF SNIBSTON Regarding the attached from the Schedule of Included Sites from the SHLAA: Brian Vollar, Chair of Friends of Snibston asks: “How can these Snibston sites (highlighted : C8, C52 & C56) be included in this list, to be considered at the NWLDC Local Plan Advisory Committee on the 29th April 2014, when we are in the middle of a so called ‘consultation’ about the future of Snibston and a formal decision by LCC is not expected until September 2014 ? “ and states: “The 'pre-determination' re Snibston is palpable and there for all to see. The Snibston items in the SHLAA list can be challenged on its own following assessment criteria -: Suitability : The land on all three parts is clearly not suitable for housing development given the contamination and precarious nature of the sub levels.
Availability : The land should not be presumed to be available when no formal public decision has been made by LCC about its future and when it is currently subject to a 'consultation'. Ownership : The community (and its custodian LCC) own this land but nowhere in the current consultation about its future have they been asked about its disposal for housing development. C8, C52 and C56 be removed from the list immediately.” Brian Vollar 01530 222659 - 07913 979088

GARDENING
T
he days are getting longer and the sunshine warmer so the plants in my garden are shooting up. Like most gardeners I know I have shady areas in the garden to contend with. These patches receive little direct sunlight due to the trees and conifers which overhang the area and their roots dry the soil out too. Despite these less than ideal conditions, there are plants that will happily thrive given the right initial care and attention. If you have a shady area to tackle its worth considering just how shady it is and what the soil is like before visiting a garden centre or nursery for plants, that way you’ll be able to choose the right plant for the right place. Part Shade: - If you have a border that has restricted direct sunlight for part of the day due to a garden fence or low building, then you’ll find that most plants will survive if the area is open to the sky & not gloomy. Dappled Shade: - If you have trees that lose their leaves in winter (deciduous) which overhang the area reducing the sunlight to dappled rays in springsummer, then you will find that the best plants will be those that flourish in the spring before the trees leaf up. Deep Shade: - If you are afflicted by mature conifers, hedges or overshadowing buildings you’ll find that the palette you have to choose from won’t be a gloriously colourful one but there will be plants available that will brighten the area and add interest throughout the year. Establishing the soil condition is important too. Most shady areas suffer with dry soil as the rain can’t penetrate the canopy above or the existing mature plants suck out all moisture from the ground. Conversely some shady areas will have constantly moist soil. The plants that will be happy in moist conditions will be very different from those happy in dry soil.
Bel Grierson
Garden Designer & Plantswoman
Whatever the level of shade or the soil condition, it’s vital that the soil is weed-free; this may mean a dose of a systemic weed killer is in order prior to planting. It is then worth adding plenty of compost or manure and a balanced fertiliser like Growmore.
13
If you have a troublesome shady area you need help with or you are looking for design ideas, a Consultation or Planting Plan may be just what you need. Take a look at my website for details of the services I offer www.belgrierson.co.uk or call me on 07506 750250.
With the soil ready it’s time to choose the plants. Many of our local garden centres and nurseries now stock plants specially selected for shady conditions, so go along and look for the plants which will best suit the level of shade and soil conditions in your patch. Particular favourites of mine are as follows: Dappled Shade: Hardy Geraniums, Anemone, Pulmonaria, Heuchera, Bluebells, Foxgloves, Aquilegia. Deep Shade: Euphorbia robbiae, Cotoneaster, Box, Aucuba, Mahonia, Sarcococca, Hellebore, Bergenia. Dry Shade: Euphorbia robbiae, Bergenia, Hellebores, Dryopteris fern, Symphytum (Comfrey), Vinca (Periwinckle) Moist Shade: Mecanopsis, Astilbe, Aruncus, Astrantia, Primula, Ligularia. It’s vital that new plants in shady areas are watered well until they have established new roots and can fend for themselves– this could be for several months. In dry areas a good soak once a week with a hose will allow the water to penetrate down to the roots. It’s also good to add a layer of mulch to reduce the moisture loss from the surface of the soil. With the right initial care and the best plant for the site and soil conditions, a dull lifeless shady area can be transformed in to a verdant oasis. Summer is fast approaching and for a bright splash of colour in a sunny spot you can’t beat hanging baskets, window boxes and containers, so next month I’ll be looking at which plants to choose and I’ll be suggesting some plant combinations too.

CHRISTINE RADFORD
A
s your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal, with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. (LCC). BUSINESS FORUM
Which was held as a breakfast meeting on Friday 28th March at Livio’s in Hall Croft and attended by Nicky Morgan MP and local business people, was well attended. The main topic was the recent Chancellor’s budget and a resume was given by both the MP, who was then in the Treasury, prior to her promotion into the Cabinet and Phil Marriott from TaxAssist Accountants, situated in Field Street. It was decided to have this as a regular forum, perhaps on a quarterly basis.
INCINERATOR UPDATE
Biffa have just announced that they are moving towards the next stage with the Incinerator. Since the original planning application for the Incinerator was approved by the Secretary of State in June 2012, technological advances have enabled improved energy efficiencies enabling an increase in electrical output of the facility from 21MW to 33MW. The new design will not change the plant’s overall size and scale, or increase the permitted number of fuel deliveries to the site. A new planning application to Leicestershire County Council to ‘vary’ the approved scheme requires Biffa to carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the proposals and the planning application will need to be accompanied by and Environmental Statement, Biffa anticipate submitting the Planning Application and Environmental Statement in the summer.
PLANNING
I have had meetings with County Highways in respect of planning applications in Shepshed, concerns were raised regarding the proposed entrance to the detached dwelling on land north of 9 Britannia Street, the proposed 8 dwellings on land next to the Jolly Farmers on Iveshead Road, due to the proposed entrance onto the site being very close to the proposed mini roundabout from the 66 dwellings at the Bloor’s development at the top of Iveshead Road. The Clerk to Shepshed Town Council together with the Chairman are always invited to these meetings. With the prospect of up to 300 dwellings being built on the old brickworks Quarry site to the south of Ashby Road Central, the access to this development could prove contentious. Should the planned access be from the Ashby Road, then there are likely to be problems. Ashby Road is already very busy and frequently has stationary traffic on it already. Now that the incinerator is being taken forward this will add an additional set of traffic lights on Ashby Road and if we are not careful gridlock will be a permanent feature of this ‘Trunk Road’.
MEETING WITH MINISTER
I recently attended the Conservative annual dinner where the Secretary of State for Transport the Rt, Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP was the guest speaker, I managed to have a few words with him and raised issues that Shepshed residents had in the past spoke to me about. The Government has already invested £14m towards the Inner Relief Road in Loughborough and with the electrification of the Midland Mainline rail passengers in Loughborough, Shepshed and surrounding area can look forward to a faster service, which should lead to greater investment in the area.

M
y role as a Borough Councillor can be very varied and interesting, dealing with housing problems, neighbour problems or planning issues. PLANNING
I called in the planning application P/13/2467/2 for 3 dwellings on land between 64 & 66 Brick Kiln Lane and it was dealt with at a planning committee meeting on 27th March. The application was approved, but with the condition that no part of the development shall be brought into use until such time as the agreed remedial works (including any further measures for monitoring the level of contamination and/ or effectiveness of the remedial works), have been implemented in accordance with a timetable of events, previously agreed in writing by the local planning authority. Another condition states that if, during development, contamination not previously identified is found to be present at the site, no further development (unless otherwise agreed in writing with the local planning authority) shall be carried out until such time as an amendment to the previously agreed remedial works, detailing how this unsuspected contamination will be dealt with, has been agreed in writing by the local planning authority. Both of the above conditions are to ensure the site, when developed is free from contamination, in the interests of public health and safety. A further condition requires that certain trees are protected during work and that they have a Tree Protection Order put on them.
I have supported my fellow Ward Councillor is asking that planning application P/14/0549/2, for the proposed erection of 8 dwellings on land next to the Jolly Farmers at 85 Iveshead Road in Shepshed. The main concerns are access onto both Iveshead Road and Jolly Farmers Lane and overdevelopment of the area. Other planning applications in the pipeline are for a children’s play centre at 91 Charnwood Road, a Fitness studio at Unit 2, 14 Field Street, a detached dwelling on land north of 9, Britannia Street, and a retrospective application for a Car Wash at the junction of Ashby Road with Iveshead Road. Land which has just been given planning approval at Leicestershire County Council for a low level restoration scheme on the land belonging to Michelmersh Brick Holdings (formerly Charnwood Forest Brick and Tile Company), Ashby Road Central, has just had a request for a screening opinion in relation to proposed residential development of up to 300 dwellings and associated works (P/14/0597/2) lodged at Charnwood Borough Council. At the time of going to press there is no further news on when the large developments on Tickow Lane, Hallamford Road and Hathern Road are going before the planning committee at Charnwood. TREE PRESERVATION ORDERS I am working with officers at Charnwood to get further preservation orders put on trees, hedges and tree screening on areas in Shepshed. If residents have a tree, or other screening features they wish to see protected please get in touch. I continue to hold a monthly surgery in the Town Council offices with other Conservative Councillors from 10-11am on the last Saturday of every month except December.

UPDATE FROM YOUR LOCAL MP

NICKY MORGAN T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk
I
would like to start this month’s column by thanking everyone who attended the postBudget breakfast held at Livio’s in Shepshed hosted by me and Shepshed’s Couny Councillor, Christine Radford. As predicted we had an excellent discussion assisted by Phil Marriot from TaxAssist Accountants. And we had a delicious breakfast too! It was particularly encouraging to meet a number of new representatives from local businesses as well as a representative from the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce and I think some useful contacts were made. Topics discussed included business rates, corporation tax, pensions, energy costs, manufacturing, and the recruitment of apprentices as well as how smaller businesses find out about all the Government support schemes available to them. One of the main supports available to businesses from April is the £2000 employment allowance. The scheme is designed to be straightforward - to claim you have to tick the right box on your payroll software. The Government has published guidance on the £2,000 Employment Allowance and how to benefit. Information about eligibility and further details are available at: www.gov.uk/ employment-allowance The Employment Allowance will see up to 1.25 million businesses getting a tax cut of up to £2,000. 90 per cent of the benefit will go to businesses that employ fewer than 50 people and 450,000 small businesses will stop paying employer National Insurance altogether.
MAY 30 SILEBY SURGERY
One of the attendees at the breakfast was the Managing Director of Shepshed business, Urgo Medical, Justin Cole. Justin invited me to visit the business which I did recently. I was able to hear about the history of Urgo Medical, its national and international reach and future plans. Justin took me around the factory to meet the staff and to see how the products are produced. The factory in Shepshed produces an amazing 19million bandages a year, as well as made to measure compression hosiery products. I was lucky enough to get my own made to measure pair of hosiery produced speedily while I visited! I am always keen to visit as many local businesses as possible to hear about their successes and offer my support. I was delighted to hear how successful Urgo Medicals business in Shepshed is and to hear about their plans for investing in new machinery in their factory here. This is great news for local employment and our local economy and for the NHS too. Finally I am dismayed to hear that Biffa intend to go ahead with their plans to build an incinerator on the edge of Shepshed. Along with local residents and Cllr Christine Radford I fought Biffa’s plans for several years and the plans were turned down by Leicestershire County Council. I will be discussing next steps with all interested parties locally when the detailed application and updated Environmental Statement are published.
Nicky Morgan
Nicky will be holding an advice surgery from 5pm - 7pm at the Sileby Community Centre. Please ring on 01509 262723 to book your appointment.

SHEPSHED BUSINESS, URGO MEDICAL, HOSTS VISIT BY LOCAL MP, NICKY MORGAN Long-established Shepshed business, Urgo Medical, hosted a visit to the town’s factory and offices last week. The visit arose as a result of Urgo Medical Managing Director, Justin Cole, attending Nicky’s post-Budget breakfast in Shepshed at the end of March. Urgo Medical is a manufacturer of made to measure hosiery and advanced wound care products used by hospitals and GP practices across the country. Nicky was able to hear about the history of Urgo Medical, its national and international reach and future plans. They discussed issues such as the employment of apprentices, exporting, how the company works with the NHS as well as its relations with Nottingham Trent University and organisations such as the Lindsey Leg Club Foundation. Justin then took Nicky around the factory to meet the staff and to see how the products are produced. The factory in Shepshed produces 19million
bandages a year as well as made to measure compression hosiery products. Nicky was lucky enough to get her own made to measure pair of hosiery produced speedily while she visited. Speaking after the visit Nicky said, “I am always keen to visit as many local businesses as possible to hear about their successes and offer my support. I was delighted to hear how successful Urgo Medicals business in Shepshed is and to hear about their plans for investing in new machinery in their factory here. This is great news for local employment and our local economy and for the NHS too.” Urgo Medical Managing Director, Justin Cole, added, “It was a great pleasure to introduce Nicky to Urgo Medical in Shepshed, for her to see first hand Great British manufacturing taking place and to outline our growth plans for the future. We welcome Nicky’s support and genuine interest in what we do and how we can continue to help the NHS, the patients and the economy as a whole.”
HAVE YOUR SAY ON FUTURE LIBRARIES IN LEICESTERSHIRE From 7 April to 7 July the county council is consulting on the following proposal: • Continue to operate the 16 most-used libraries but reduce their opening hours • Support communities to run the other 36 local libraries - if community groups do not come forward, some libraries may close These changes are being proposed because: • From 2015, the council plans to save £800,000 per year from its current £5.6 million libraries budget • People are increasingly using E-books and the internet instead of borrowing books from libraries • Libraries are increasingly being used as community hubs, hosting a series of activities • Your views are important so that we can better understand how the proposals could affect you and how we can make these changes work best for you. The consultation takes place from today 7 April till 7 July and full details are on www.leics.gov.uk/haveyoursay/futurelibraries, including dates and venues of public meetings in May and June and other consultation events. HEALTH & WELL BEING
OSTEOARTHRITIS OF THE KNEE Osteoarthritis of the knee is the result of wear and tear and general aging. Some people are more prone to early osteoarthritis. The joints are covered with articular cartilage which allows the joint to glide smoothly; this becomes worn with osteoarthritis, causing the bone underneath to become exposed, and involved in the actual joint function. Leading to pain and swelling. In response, the joint produces extra bone around the edge of the joint called osteophytes increasing the size of the joint.
How does exercise help Osteoarthritis? It is a common misconception that exercise will make arthritis worse, and aggravate the joint, causing more injury. However, appropriate exercise actually has many benefits for people with arthritis: • Provides strength and support to a joint, making it more stable • Eases stiffness and pain • Prevents muscles from losing length • Maintains the range of movement within joints • Improves general fitness and bone density • Helps you lose weight, reducing strain on the hips and knees • General exercise releases endorphins - making you feel good! Exercises for arthritis of the knee include; gentle stretches for the calves, hamstrings and hips and specific power exercises for the quadriceps, hamstrings and gluteal muscles.
GLAUCOMA SO WHAT IS GLAUCOMA AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR YOUR EYES? The Glaucoma’s are a group of eye conditions which can affect your vision, and if left untreated, can lead to permanent loss of vision. The most common type of glaucoma is primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Primary open angle glaucoma usually develops slowly (over a period of years rather than weeks or months). It is asymptomatic (no noticeable symptoms) and because the peripheral vision is affected first, can go unnoticed by the sufferer until the disease is quite advanced. Having regular eye

General exercise improves your cardio-vascular fitness and joint mobility; non-weightbearing activities such as swimming and cycling are highly beneficial as they impose minimal impact to the knee joint. Exercise should be achievable and regular, aim to do 20 minutes each day - this can be split up into separate sessions throughout the day. To improve your general fitness you should be slightly out of breath during exercise. Try to make exercise a part of your daily routine. Joining a group, or getting fit with friends, can make exercise more fun! You should wear comfortable, wide fitting shoes with cushioned soles to provide shock absorbency. Build up your pace gradually, whilst increasing how much you do - you may need to step the pace down again if you have break from your daily routine. Most injuries occur after a break or increasing the pace too quickly. Submitted by Angie Robinson Physiotherapy Clinics 01509 816 673 physiotherapists-in-leicester.co.uk
examinations increases the chances that this condition is detected in its early stages so that appropriate treatment can be given before and loss of vision is minimised. It is a slow developing form of the condition, which occurs when fluid doesn’t drain properly from the eye causing a build up of pressure, which damages the optic nerve. The good news is that by having regular eye examinations this condition can be detected in its early stages, before the build up of pressure begins to effect sight. Over 480,000 people in England have been diagnosed with primary open angle glaucoma, although the International Glaucoma Association estimates that the number of people with this condition is significantly higher.
Athletes Foot or ‘Tinea Pedis’ afflicts many people particularly as spring and summer bring the warmer weather, and you don’t have to be athletic for it to choose your feet as a home! It is a fungal infection characterised by itchy, sore, red, flaky skin. If untreated it can develop into painful, deep cracks which are often first symptom to be noticed. It usually starts in-between the fourth and fifth (little) toes and there may be a slight ‘cheesy’ odour. Athletes foot can be more of a problem during spring and summer as, like bacteria, fungus thrives in warm, moist, dark conditions, so where better to make its home than a nice sweaty shoe, trainer, sandal or work boot. Apparently, sweat glands in the feet can produce up to half a pint of sweat a daily! HOW DO YOU PREVENT GLAUCOMA? Unfortunately you cannot take actions to prevent glaucoma. The problem with POAG is that because it can be asymptomatic in the early stages, many sufferers do not realise that they have it and by the time it is detected, the vision has already been damaged. Early diagnosis and management is vital and the best way to ensure that the condition is diagnosed early is to have regular eye examinations. If you are diagnosed with the condition it can be managed, the aim being to preserve vision treated to prevent it from worsening. The most common treatment is eye drops, although other treatments including betablockers and surgery can be used. The NHS Choices website explains “Attending regular optician appointments will help to ensure that any signs of glaucoma can be detected early and allow treatment to begin.” You should also inform your Optometrist if you have a family history of glaucoma or related illnesses.
Washing and thoroughly drying feet during the warmer weather is really important. Socks and footwear should be changed regularly and sharing towels should be avoided as it can spread from person to person. A good athlete’s foot cream available from any local pharmacy will usually treat the condition and it can be kept away using a small amount of athlete’s foot powder after showering. If the problem persists consult your the GP. Children and pregnant women should always consult the pharmacy or GP before using products. USEFUL WEBSITES: www.nhs.uk www.patient.co.uk www.foot.com/site/professional/ foot-facts WHAT NEXT? If you haven’t been for an eye examination within the past 2 years the next step should be to book one as soon as you conveniently can. WHAT’S ON THIS MONTH
SHEPSHED TOWN TEAM PARTNERSHIP There will be a meeting of the Shepshed Town Team at Shepshed High School on Monday 12th May at 6.00pm. The main topic will be Recreation and Leisure provision in Shepshed. The meetings are open to anyone with an interest in the future direction of Shepshed. Refreshments are available and there is always time for questions and discussion. Main points arising from the Recreation and Leisure discussion at the Launch meeting: • Masterplan only refers to the town centre which is too narrow a definition for practical applications. • Shepshed needs gym provision. An extension to the Glenmore centre may be possible. There may be possibilities on the secondary school campus eg: convert the youth centre. • Use Passion as the main youth base in Shepshed.

It’s a fabulous opportunity to get back into cycling again after the winter months, so whether or not you are a keen cyclist, there’s never been a better time to dust of your bike in time for the summer months.
• The skate park will get investment of approximately £9000 but it will take about 2 -3 years. A bowl design would be popular. • The swimming pool needs development – upgrade the showers and toilets. This may entail adding adult only facilities to comply with safeguarding procedures. • Longer opening times and restoring Sunday opening would allow wider access for adults. Annual Membership would help to cover additional lifeguard costs. • Glenmore Park has an outdoor adult gym. • Further develop the football field recently upgraded with new changing facilities. Investigate adding a running track around the perimeter. • The Library has lost passing trade since Asda opened. Would more exhibitions and events improve footfall? • Young people would like an internet café in the Library or as part of a gym facility.
The route is all on open roads and is well signposted with marshal points at every junction. The circular route starts and finishes in Rothley village and has been carefully chosen to ensure maximum safety and enjoyment. At the end, you’ll be treated to complimentary yummy home cake cakes and refreshments – a perfect thought to get you through the ride. This is a sponsored ride in aid of Alex’s Wish, a registered charity set-up to raise vital funds for an incurable childhood muscle wasting disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Alex is an 8 years old boy from Rothley who was diagnosed with this devastating condition in 2010. Alex’s Wish are investing in innovative medical breakthroughs to help all children lead a longer and more fulfilled life with the
• Run more guided walks around Shepshed linked to the Heritage trail of Sheep heads.
• Young people would like a Subway outlet to help encourage healthy eating.
• Investigate a Shepshed Trail brochure for independent visitors to follow.
• Encourage more residents and visitors to use the town shops, pubs and restaurants by involving them in events run in empty shops in town.
• Link noticeboards to the above 2. • Can Shepshed become a gateway to the National Forest to bring in walking, climbing and cycling visitors to benefit from accommodation, pubs restaurants, cafés and fast food outlets? Can the charity shops develop heritage sections related to Shepshed? • Look after the footpaths, cycleways and related signs. • Restore the Open Gardens event with links to allotments, schools and guerrilla gardening.

Clever Daniel and the sunflower seeds
ethany was a bird, and her favourite things in the world to eat were sun flower seeds! She had a big pile of them that she used to nibble on as a treat. Occasionally she would share them with her friends Christie Cat and Daniel Dog.
Bethany loves them so much that for her birthday last year Christie Cat baked her a sun flower seed birthday cake and it was the most wonderful thing she had ever tasted!
‘I’ve tried eating sun flowers and they taste very, very, nasty!’ said Bethany grumpily. ‘No’ laughed Daniel Dog, ‘you can’t eat the flowers! After the flowers die they turn in to seed heads and each head has hundreds of seeds on’ ‘Oh I like the sound of that’ replied Bethany So Bethany Bird gave Daniel Dog 5 of her seeds, keeping a few for her to eat whilst she waited for the seeds to grow. All through the summer Bethany waited sometimes, not very patiently but Daniel reassured her it would be worth the wait.
One day, just like every day before, Bethany went to get some sunflower seeds to nibble on, but when she looked she saw she only had a few left. So she went to Daniel Dog to see if he had any in his garden. ‘Hello Bethany’ said Daniel Dog,
She watered them and looked after them and soon enough they each had a huge yellow flower on them. Whilst everyone else was enjoying looking at the flowers she was waiting for them to die so she could have the seeds.
‘Hello Daniel, I’m wondering if you have any sunflower seeds in your garden as I’ve almost run out?’ ‘I’m afraid I haven’t Bethany but I may know how to turn the few you have got in to lots more?’ Said Daniel.
At the end of the summer she went out with Daniel and just as he’d said, each head had hundreds of seeds on it. Bethany and Daniel harvested the seeds. Bethany took most of them home to eat over the next year but Daniel kept some in his pocket so he could plant more in the spring as a surprise for Bethany.
‘Turn a few in to more? How can you possibly do that?’ asked a confused Bethany. ‘We will plant them in my garden.’ Said Daniel, ‘When they grow each seed will grow in to a beautiful yellow flower’.
Q. When do monkeys fall from the sky? A. During Ape-ril showers! Q: Why is everyone so tired on April 1? A: Because they’ve just finished a long, 31 day March!
What a clever Dog Daniel was! Q: What flowers grow on faces? A: Tulips (Two-lips)! Q: Why is the letter A like a flower? A: A bee (B) comes after it!
Q: What do you call a girl with a frog on her head? A: Lily! Q: What season is it when you are on a trampoline? A: Spring-time!

An English Garden
MAKE AN EGG SHELL GARDEN YOU WILL NEED:
• An egg box with a dozen egg shells (rinsed) • Some potting compost • A Plastic spoon • Seed (cress for quick growing or sunflowers, herbs, beans etc for potting on into the garden)
HOW YOU DO IT:
• Place the rinsed out egg shells in to the egg box (if you want to draw faces on your shells the growing seeds can look like hair!) • Using the plastic spoon ¾ fill the shells with potting compost. • If you are using cress seeds, lightly sprinkle a pinch of seeds on to the top of the compost in each shell. For larger seeds, push the seed gently in to the compost and cover it over with a light dusting of more compost. • Water well and place on a sunny windowsill. • Remember to keep the compost damp. • Watch and wait! • When the cress is about 2cm high it’s ready for cutting and eating! • For other seeds, keep them inside until the risk of frost has past and then plant them in the shell in your garden (Egg shells are biodegradable so no need to remove the plant from them). Send us some pictures of you with your egg shell garden and we’ll print our favourites in the next edition!
The magic of that dull, brown earth is very clear. Spring will work yearly miracle, never fear. Fresh green shoots give way to summer blooms. Gather your rose buds, brighten up your rooms. As one with the earth, I think that’s what they say. My favourite month? I suppose that must be May Apple blossom, pink confetti decks the trees. Swirling through the air on every gentle breeze. Fuchsia’s ruby droplets fill our hearts with gladness. Pinks with their gentle fragrance will dispel all sadness. Delphiniums, tall and stately, every shade of blue. Queen of the herbaceous border, yes that’s very true. Bumble bees, all pollen dusted, droning past. They tell us that high summer must be here at last. Butterflies like flying jewels they set the scene. Sweet pea, clematis yes and even runner bean. Their garden, like an orchestra that’s well in harmony. So gardener, take your baton maestro, let there beauty be. By Chris Rose
