WELCOME TO YOUR MAY COMMUNITY EYE MAGAZINE It’s hard to believe spring is here as it seems to have arrived very suddenly, however it’s very welcome and I’m enjoying seeing the Bluebells start to flower as they have to be my favourite flower of all. Maybe it’s because my mother was walking in the Bluebells in Loughborough’s Outwoods just before I was born. Bel has a lovely spring article and it’s certainly inspired me to go and visit my local garden centre and have a look at the amazing array of plants for my summer pots and hanging baskets. Once the garden is looking neat and beautiful it’s time to tackle the spring clean inside. This month we’ve some handy tips for getting your house sparkling clean without having to go out and buy expensive cleaning products. We also welcome some new advertisers to our

Kiren Hanji and Farha Mohamed took over the Dental Centre in 2013 and have enhanced the service they offer to the people of Shepshed by extending their opening hours into the evenings and weekends. The practice is fully committed to the NHS and provides dental education in local primary schools and regular dental checks to residents in local care homes.

Kiren and Farha decided to sponsor the Shepshed Show after being approached by the staff at the practice. Farha said, "The staff told me the Shepshed Show is the best event in the town and the Dental Centre should sponsor it. Their enthusiasm and excitement for the show convinced me that we should help support this annual community event. Without the support of local businesses and volunteers these events just would not happen. We are proud to put our name to the Shepshed Show." Steve Alford, The Shepshed Show Chairperson said, "The committee is delighted to have Charnwood Dental Centre on board and it is through the fantastic support of local businesses that we are able to run such a big and exciting day out for everyone in Shepshed. The committee would like to thank all the local businesses for their generosity in supporting the show." This year's show will take place on Saturday, 20th June, 2015 at Shepshed High School. If any local businesses want to get involved and sponsor the show please email shepshedshow@gmail. com for more information.

UPDATE FROM GURU SINGH Since my last update in the Shepshed Eye, my progress has been very encouraging. I have lost another 3 pounds in weight. This makes a total weight loss of 16 pounds, so to reach my ideal weight to enable me to complete my challenge successfully I have another 12 pounds to lose. My fund raising has gone past the £2,500. Thanks to all who have donated so far, especially to Margaret Hallam (and the Peat family) for the collection at her mother, Olive Peat’s funeral. I have also received some enquiries from people in Shepshed who want to take up cycling. This is great news as I have always wanted a cycling club in Shepshed just like the running club. To start with we will be forming an informal group of interested riders. The group ride will begin at 9.30 every Sunday from The Council offices in front of Tesco on Charnwood Road. This will be a mixed ability group and the ride will be over a short distance and for enjoyment. Once established we can progress on to a more formal club type setting. Start date in June to be announced. Last Sunday I took part in a 78 mile sportive ride around Rutland and East Leicestershire along with some riders who

SHEPSHED HISTORY SOCIETY April meeting of the Shepshed History Society saw the members enjoying a highly entertaining and very amusing talk given by Mr Chris Knight entitled ‘Auntie The War Is Over’ Chris’ auntie lived in a tiny cottage all her married life and at the age of 81 decided it was time to go into a retirement flat and asked her nephew Chris to give her a hand with clearing out her home. Which it later revealed was a mind blowing experience that left Chris and his family reeling with everything they found. It was like a time capsule from the past. 5,000 photos to begin with, ancient newspapers over 2,000 carrier bags all with the long gone shop names on them. 4,000 paper bags all neatly ironed. 274 rain hats but the one she always used was taped up with cello-tape. £9,000 was found neatly filed in a bureau drawer and although Auntie never locked up when nipping out wasn’t unduly worried about this as there was a knack to opening the drawer apparently so a burglar

are also in the Geneva to Milan challenge. It was a very tough and hilly ride, but I managed to finish it quite comfortably. This has given me a lot of confidence and I am beginning to look forward to the ultimate Alpine challenge involving cycling 360 miles over four days and climbing 17,000 feet. A total of 60 riders and 12 support riders will be taking part. The charity Hope Against Cancer, for whom I am raising sponsorship, is aiming to raise £150,000 in total from this challenge and Shepshed’s contribution will help it to continue to provide funds for vital cancer research projects in University Hospitals of Leicester. More information on www.hfcr.org In addition to my giving page http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ team/Hopesitalianjob I now have sponsorship forms at Dilip’s in Market Place, Hall Croft Opticians, Bloomin’ Marvellous Florists on Charnwood Road, News Shop in Field Street, Ryatt’s Optometrist in Bull Ring, Charnwood Pharmacy on Charnwood Road and The Black Swan. Meanwhile my weekly blog on www.gsingh1015.wordpress.com gives an ongoing update on my progress and information on diet, exercise, weight loss, cancer care and prevention.

wouldn’t know how to open it anyway. This money apparently had been previously pressed inside books in order to flatten it out so another £3,000 waiting to be pressed was found in her books, all this money found went on buying new furniture for her new home, as due to modern windows having been put in her cottage over the years the existing furniture had to be chopped up to get it out of the cottage. 72 cardigans and so the list went on. It would seem that Chris and his family all had red salmon and salad when they went for Sunday tea, but on finding countless tins of pink salmon Auntie finally confessed that she always coloured this fish with cochineal. It was a totally fascinating evening as Chris continued to regale us with his finds, most of which have now found their way into his garage much to his wife’s dismay, as it’s now of course a piece of social history too important to dispose of. A brilliant evening and thoroughly enjoyable. The speaker for the May meeting is to be Mr. S. Flinders and the subject to be Catherine Comptons Diaries. New members are always welcome.

OXLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL PLAY PARK OPENS After much anticipation, the new Play Park at Oxley Primary School in Shepshed was officially opened on Thursday by guest of honour, Nicky Morgan.

The play park has transformed an area of the school grounds that was had begun to look rather neglected. The children now have a new, safe and exciting space to play and to develop their fitness and balance. The newest section of the park was designed by a group of children, who were winners in the school’s design competition. The park was made possible thanks to a Lottery grant of £10,000 together with £2500 of funding from the school’s PFA (Parents’ and Friends’ Association) fundraising.

The whole school, together with a number of parents, came outside to mark this special occasion. In her speech, Mrs Morgan paid tribute to the parental community, saying that the new play park was a “testament” to their continued support throughout the year for the different events organised

by the PFA. Headteacher Jason Gilman said, “I’m delighted with the Play Park. The children absolutely love using it. It provides tangible evidence of the impact of the fundraising events that have been taking part over the past year.” Pictured with Nicky Morgan are the winners of the design competition, who went on to have the final say over the play park design.

ROTARY AND THE SHEPSHED VOLUNTEER GARDEN The Shepshed Volunteer Centre provides volunteer-led services including a social car scheme, gardening and befriending and is a key player in the Shepshed community. Shepshed Charnwood Rotarian Mike Hall was pleased to present Angie Whitmore (Activities Support Worker) with a donation which should go some way to helping the group with an exciting new project.

The money will go towards providing hard landscaping and buildings such as a greenhouse (plastic, no glass) and a large activities shed, which they will be able to use whatever the weather.

They are hoping to renovate the land at the rear of the centre, and turn it into a well-being garden where local people will be able to come and work for a couple of hours, enjoying some relaxation and therapeutic time. It will include raised beds and a sensory garden.

The Rotary Club and the Centre would like to thank the people of Shepshed who supported the annual Santa float during its visit to Asda and the Co-op at Christmas. Well done everyone; your generosity does make a difference to local organisations.

LOCAL NEWS

SHEPSHED WI Shepshed WI members met for their April meeting and welcomed guest speaker Methodist Deacon Jan Sutton who is the Co-ordinator for Loughborough Street Pastors and also a Chaplin at the University. She explained that the idea of street pastors first started in 2000 and has grown steadily nationally. She said there are 9 schemes in Leicestershire with 20 street Pastors in Loughborough supported by all the churches in the town. She emphasised that the service was for all age groups not just the students. She brought along copies of the first edition of a news sheet in which there was a report that she had received an Unsung Hero Award in January this year for her ministry in Loughborough and in recognition of her work in setting up Street Pastors in the town. The next meeting will be held on Thursday 7th May when the resolution to be brought to the national Council Meeting in June will be discussed. All meetings are held at 7.30 pm at Christchurch Methodist Church, Field Street, Shepshed.

OPENING OF THIS YEAR'S SHOW The Shepshed Show Committee is pleased to announce that this year's show will be opened by David Bridges. David has been a long time supporter of the Shepshed Show and has recently retired as the Facilities Manager at Shepshed High School. In that role his commitment and energy has helped ensure that the show weekend has run smoothly and achieved the success the organisers had hoped for.

• Males and females with the surname beginning with ‘H’ • Males only with the surname beginning with ‘B’ Registration with a specific Doctor is purely for administration purposes only and does not affect the ability of these patients to see any Doctor of their choice. Finally, on 1 June Dr Prakash Panchal will be joining the Surgery as a full time Salaried GP – patients may remember Dr Panchal as he worked at the Surgery for over a year as a GP Registrar whilst training to be a GP. Steve Alford, the Show Chairperson, who worked along side David for many years at Shepshed High School said, "David's commitment and attention to detail are unparalleled and has resulted in the school facilities being used for a wide range of activities, outside school hours, that benefit not only the school but the people of Shepshed." The committee members wish David a long and happy retirement and by asking him to open our show this year is their way of saying thank you to him for all his support over the past three years,

You may have seen our distinctive helicopters in the skies above, flying critically wounded patients to hospital in record time in order to save their lives. As the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance, indeed, all of the Charity`s aircraft and Staff have no Government funding, we on the ground have to raise sufficient funds to keep our highly-trained medics and fast helicopters in the air. The Charnwood Supporters Group is in urgent need of new Volunteers to help out in raising money locally – we do bucket collections at events, attend shows in the area (and have fun!). If you could spare a few hours of you time to swell our numbers, we would welcome you at our monthly meetings on the last Tuesday of the month at 7pm at the Thorpe Acre Scout Hut Loughborough LE11 4LF, or find out more by calling Head Office on: 0845130999 or by emailing Enquiries@theairambulance service.org.uk

THE NOTTINGHAM BUILDING SOCIETY’S EGG-CELLENT COMPETITION PHOTO’S: Branch Manager Carl Ward presents prizes to winners from left to right: Chloe, Laura, and Charlie

The Shepshed branch of the Nottingham Building Society (The Nottingham) ran an Easter colouring competition for local primary school children. Pupils from St Botolphs, Oxley and Newcroft primary schools were tasked with colouring in Easter eggs, and Shepshed branch staff were overwhelmed by all the cracking entries. There were so many colourful and egg-citing entries that the branch staff struggled to pick one winner, so they eventually picked their favourite from each school.

Colouring champions Charlie Wallis, Laura Page and Chloe Summers dropped into the branch this week to pick up their prizes, which were presented to them by branch manager Carl Ward. Carl said “It’s brilliant that we have such a good relationship with the schools in the town, and that they so willingly take part in the activities we provide.”

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

LOCAL NEWS so to everyone involved and all the people who are doing there part to help us we are truly thankful from the bottom of our hearts on behalf of Alfie, our family and Action For Alfie, Thank you xxx”

SHEPSHED LIONS CLUB IS LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS. WOULD YOU LIKE TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE LARGEST SERVICE ORGANISATION IN THE WORLD? What is Shepshed Lions Club?

They are a group of dedicated volunteers who give their time freely to undertake fund-raising and service activities in the community to help people that are less fortunate than themselves. They come from all walks of life with a desire to help others. Shepshed Lions Club is looking for new members to expand the work they already do in our community. The club has currently 26 members who are active in the community throughout the year.

What do they do?

We raise funds for charitable good causes by various methods. If you live in Shepshed you may know some of our projects already. We have our Annual Charity Carnival in Glenmore Park on the late Bank Holiday in August. In December we have our annual visit from Santa Claus, touring the streets of Shepshed to let Santa check that the children have been good and raise funds for the good causes. We raffle giant Easter Eggs in local public houses and have tin shakes at local supermarkets. We also started the Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responder scheme that work with the East Midlands Ambulance Service responding to medical emergencies. Every single penny raised in our activities goes to charitable good causes in our community, supporting a large variety of groups and individuals in the town.

How can you become a member of Shepshed Lions Club?

You need to be 18 years of age or over, of good character and willing to work in the community as a volunteer. You will be invited to attend 3 business meetings and if you like what we do and you display a desire to help, and you fit in to what we do you will be invited to join us. There is no initiation ceremony or anything like that. There are no tests, exams or interviews to pass. If you are interested please contact Lion President Bob Lilley on 07585 772902 or by e-mail at the following address thelilleys15@gmail.com

Do I need to be wealthy to become a member?

Definitely not! There is an annual subscription of £60 per year. This can be paid monthly, 6 monthly or as a one off payment. This money is used to cover all administration costs for the club. This is important as it enables us to proudly say that all funds raised go to charitable good causes.

Is there anything else I need to do?

Yes. Every month we have a variety of social events held in various locations. These comprise of quizzes, meals, BBQs and such like. We would invite you to come and enjoy fun and friendship with like-minded people.

PRESENTATION TO “ACTION FOR ALFIE’

Shepshed Lions Club is delighted to announce that it has joined the “Action for Alfie” campaign by making a donation of £2000 towards the costs of purchasing specialist equipment to enhance the care of Alfie, who has a number of different health problems to contend with. Lion President Bob Lilley said, “Shepshed Lions Club is delighted to make this donation to support Alfie and his family. We work hard all year to raise funds, and receive fantastic support from the public in Shepshed. We hope this grant makes Alfie’s life a little more comfortable, and his care a little bit easier for his family.” Fay Marie (Alfies Mum) said “This really is one amazing act of kindness we couldn’t be more grateful and thankful to Shepshed Lions it has blown us away as a family and it’s been emotional to think we are now evermore closer to ensuring we can do the very best to enable Alfie’s quality of life is one that he truly deserves. Our Amazing little boy is very very special to us and without all this kindness a lot of the help he is going to get wouldn’t be possible

SERENADE – MUSIC AND MEMORIES Following the Easter Break, the ladies of ‘Serenade’, Shepshed Women’s Community Choir are back in full swing rehearsing for their forthcoming “Music and Memories” concerts. Due to popular demand extra dates, and venues, have been added to the programme for this fabulous event. The idea behind the theme is that each of the songs performed has been requested by a member of the Choir as it holds a special memory for them, so you can expect a variety of musical treats from across the years. The evening will be a mix of solo and small group performances in addition to the whole ensemble coming together for some of the songs. Once again, Musical Director, Tom Stanyard will lead the ladies through the programme of music. There will be big musical numbers and gentle guitar melodies and popular duets. As mentioned, the music holds special memories for the choir members, so it will cover full range of both years and genre. Delights such as a medley of tunes from Oliver, Catch a falling Star, Only you, Amarillo and much more are included. There will be lots to get your feet tapping! As usual, refreshments will be available. The dates and venues are as follows:

Monday 1st June 2015

Thorpe Acre Church, Thorpe Acre Road, Loughborough, LE11 4LF

Saturday 13th June 2015 Shepshed High School, Forest Street, Shepshed, Leicestershire LE12 9DA

Monday 15th June 2015

Cope Auditorium, Epinal Way, Loughborough, LE11 3TU Doors open at 7:10pm the concert starts at 7:30pm Tickets are priced as follows: Adults £5 Children £3, under 5’s free and are available from Mal on 07866 439278 Hot on the heels of the concert tour is the Shepshed Show on 15th June, and although the ladies will not be performing this year, they will be having a charity stall, so please go along and support them, they would love to see you. The proceeds from the concerts at Shepshed High School and The Cope Auditorium and the charity stall, will go to the choirs chosen charity; The Peter Le Marchant Trust. For over thirty five years the Trust has provided day outings and holidays on waterways for people of all ages with any kind of disability or serious illness. More information can be found on their website www. peterlemarchanttrust.co.uk ‘Serenade’ is a Women’s

Community Choir, for ladies with connections to Shepshed. It is made up of ladies of all ages (over 16 years old). They meet at Shepshed High School at 7.30pm on any Monday evening during term time, so feel free to pop along and see if it’s for you. The format is very simple, you come along and sing (with a cuppa, a biscuit and a chat at the break) and make friends. The choir is a very sociable bunch of around 70 ladies, of varying ages, who have links to Shepshed. There is no need to audition and if performing in public isn’t your thing, that’s fine, there is no pressure to perform in any of our performances. On the other hand, if you want to unleash your inner diva, there is plenty of opportunity to do so! The choir has been running for 3 years and during that time they have raised thousands of pounds for a number of charities. This has been through various fundraising activities and performances. Since ‘Serenade’ started, they have performed at the Shepshed Show, at local churches in their own Christmas Concerts (often accompanied by Loughborough Concert Band and local school children), toured local nursing homes and even sung Christmas Carols at local hostelries, to name but a few. You can find more information about the choir on their website: www.serenadeshepshed.co.uk Alternatively, if you have any questions you can contact Keleigh Atkin on 07775 558219 or email ‘Serenade’ at serenadeshepshed@ rocketmail.com

SHEPSHED RUNNING CLUB PLANT CHERRY TREE IN MEMORY OF BRIAN BARNETT

Last year a popular member of Shepshed Running Club (SRC) passed away. Brian Barnett was a keen athlete who contributed greatly to the development of the club. In his memory SRC have planted a Cherry tree in the grounds of their club hut. Members held a minutes silence before starting their club night run.

SHEPSHED DYNAMO YOUTH & JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB The end of the season is complete. That leads nicely on to our annual 7 aside football competition at the Dovecote on the 9th and 10th May. The morning sessions start at 9am and the Saturday afternoon session at 2pm. It is only £1 for adults to get in, juniors and Dynamo team members are free. There is a barbeque, tuck shop, tea bar and the clubhouse will be open at certain times. £1 for

a full day of prime football must be good, so please turn up in droves and support local junior and youth football. The remainder of the summer, our teams play in other tournaments around the County. Usually teams do not train from early mid July to early mid August. In June we have our presentation night and then our Annual General meeting. Existing players, please keep in touch with your Manager and any new players, give Mick a call on 07801 691712. Reports will start again in August.

ST BOTOLPH’S TRIPLE GREEN St Botolph’s have cause to celebrate as the first school in Shepshed to be awarded the Green Flag Eco-School status. The Eco Councillors have been working hard all year with the other children and the staff to ensure everyone takes an active role in being an eco-friendly school. To achieve the award we were assessed by an external auditor from Eco-Schools. Roz visited the school and spent the morning with the Eco Councillors to find out exactly how we invest in our environmental education. Roz, our assessor, said, “The children were enthusiastic and anxious to share their work and activities.” We have now received our Green Flag and are proud to display it in recognition of the continued hard work by all the children. As part of being an eco-friendly school, the children are actively encouraged to scoot to school. St Botolph’s has been lucky to be awarded a grant from Leicestershire County Council, with guidance and support from Siobhan Woodward, to help finance three new scooter parks around the school grounds, giving parking for 120 scooters. In addition to the grant, The Rotary Club of Shepshed kindly supported us by making a generous donation towards the purchase and installation of the parks. All of the children enjoy their scoot to school and do their best to encourage family and friends to join them! Phil Marriott, Shepshed Rotary Club Chair said, “It was great to be able to assist the school with their new scooter parks for the children.” To make the most of our new scooter parks, and to promote our healthy school ethos, we entered a national competition “The Big Pedal”. For three weeks, our Eco Councillors monitored the number of children scooting to school and the number of

scooting supporters. We have just been informed that, with the children’s super scooting efforts, St Botolph’s has won one of the prizes awarded to Leicestershire schools! The prize has caused much excitement as we will be having a BMX track set up at school, for a day during this term, which the children will be able to use for scooting and cycling. Headteacher, Mrs Pepper said, “It is fantastic that the children have received recognition for all their Eco efforts. First with the generous help we received for our new scooter parks, then the Green Flag Award and now we are all looking forward to a day on the BMX track.”

COLOURFUL PATIO POTS

S

pring has well and truly sprung and summer is fast approaching. I’m busy helping clients with planting schemes, gardening advice and border rejuvenation all helped by the warm sunny weather we’ve been having. The nurseries and garden centres are brimming with lots of fresh plants to tempt us, but which ones are best for brightening up the patio in summer?

Nemesia

There are several ways to bring colour to areas around the house or patio and it doesn’t have to be all about deadheading high maintenance annuals! I love a pelargonium or two and I’m rather partial to trailing plants like Verbena so I create a few pots which are purely about the fresh vibrancy these bring and then the rest of my pots have a more long lasting planting to give colour all year.

ANNUALS FOR SUMMER POTS

Surfinias

If you’re looking for plants to give a blast of colour from June to September and you don’t mind a bit of maintenance then combinations which include Pelargoniums (Geraniums by another name), Fuchsias, Begonias, Nemesia and Busy Lizzies will fulfil your needs. These will generally give upright height in a pot which can be surrounded by trailers such as Verbena, Surfinias, Bacopa. Given a good quality moisture retentive compost with a measure of Swell Gell and slow release fertiliser these will see you well in to

Autumn. These plants are generally tender annuals so once they get frosted they will need to be discarded and placed with autumn/ winter bedding plants.

PERENNIALS & GRASSES FOR SUMMER POTS

Perennials offer a more long-term solution, often looking good for several years before they need revamping or moving on into the garden. I have several pots which contain a mixture of perennials to give colour on and off all through the year. My favourites are the Hardy Gerberas and Hardy Osteospermum like O. ‘Tresco Purple’which will reliably flower from June onwards, rest during the winter and then start again the following spring. With these I plant grasses like Carex ‘Evergold’, Ophiopogon nigrescens (the black grass) and Festuca ‘Elijah Blue’. These all give evergreen colour and texture. For the trailers I use Thyme or Ajuga (Bugle) for evergreen foliage and colourful flowers – usually available in the alpine section at the garden centre/nursery.

SHRUBS FOR SUMMER POTS

The perennial Wallflower – Erysimum is a fab plant for colour and it flowers for such a long time with no need for tricky deadheading. E. ‘Bowles Mauve’ is rightly a firm favourite amongst gardeners with its bright mauve flower spikes and glaucous evergreen foliage. One trim after it has finished flowering and that’s it. Erysimum come in lots of

colours so there’s yellow, orange, deep red and pinky-apricot versions to try too. Lavender is a must for any garden and it survives very well in pots. Many gardeners struggle to grow it in our region due to our heavy soil, but in a pot with free-draining compost it will thrive (use John Innes no.2 available from garden centres/nurseries). Good varieties for pots include ‘Munstead’ and ‘Hidcote’ which are both traditional English varieties, or you could try French lavender varieties with their flirtatious butterfly tops. Phormiums are back in fashion and rightly so with their striking foliage and grand stature. Used on their own in a pot or surrounded by smaller grasses they will provide colour all year round. Or combine them with bold annuals like begonias for a tropical look. For my tips on how to plant up pots and hanging baskets take a look at the article from June 2014 on my website www.belgrierson.co.uk/ publications. I’m busy creating a wildlife friendly garden for clients at the moment, so next month I’ll be looking at the best ways to attract bees, butterflies, insects and birds. If your planting needs a splash of colour or you’re looking for garden design ideas I offer a tailor made service from consultations to full garden rejuvenation projects.

CLEVER DANIEL AND THE SUNFLOWER SEEDS Bethany was a bird, and her favourite things in the world to eat were sun flower seeds! She had a big pile of them that she used to nibble on as a treat. Occasionally she would share them with her friends Christie Cat and Daniel Dog. Bethany loves them so much that for her birthday last year Christie Cat baked her a sun flower seed birthday cake and it was the most wonderful thing she had ever tasted!

‘When they grow each seed will grow in to a beautiful yellow flower’. ‘I’ve tried eating sun flowers and they taste very, very, nasty!’ said Bethany grumpily. ‘No’ laughed Daniel Dog, ‘you can’t eat the flowers! After the flowers die they turn in to seed heads and each head has hundreds of seeds on’ ‘Oh I like the sound of that’ replied Bethany So Bethany Bird gave Daniel Dog 5 of her seeds, keeping a few for her to eat whilst she waited for the seeds to grow. All through the summer Bethany waited sometimes, not very patiently but Daniel reassured her it would be worth the wait.

One day, just like every day before, Bethany went to get some sunflower seeds to nibble on, but when she looked she saw she only had a few left.

She watered them and looked after them and soon enough they each had a huge yellow flower on them. Whilst everyone else was enjoying looking at the flowers she was waiting for them to die so she could have the seeds.

So she went to Daniel Dog to see if he had any in his garden. ‘Hello Bethany’ said Daniel Dog, ‘Hello Daniel, I’m wondering if you have any sunflower seeds in your garden as I’ve almost run out?’ ‘I’m afraid I haven’t Bethany but I may know how to turn the few you have got in to lots more?’ Said Daniel. ‘Turn a few in to more? How can you possibly do that?’ asked a confused Bethany.

At the end of the summer she went out with Daniel and just as he’d said, each head had hundreds of seeds on it. Bethany and Daniel harvested the seeds. Bethany took most of them home to eat over the next year but Daniel kept some in his pocket so he could plant more in the spring as a surprise for Bethany. What a clever Dog Daniel was!

‘We will plant them in my garden.’ Said Daniel.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

An English Garden The magic of that dull, brown earth is very clear. Spring will work yearly miracle, never fear. Fresh green shoots give way to summer blooms. Gather your rose buds, brighten up your rooms. As one with the earth, I think that’s what they say. My favourite month? I suppose that must be May Apple blossom, pink confetti decks the trees. Swirling through the air on every gentle breeze. Fuchsia’s ruby droplets fill our hearts with gladness. Pinks with their gentle fragrance will dispel all sadness. Delphiniums, tall and stately, every shade of blue. Queen of the herbaceous border, yes that’s very true. Bumble bees, all pollen dusted, droning past. They tell us that high summer must be here at last. Butterflies like flying jewels they set the scene. Sweet pea, clematis yes and even runner bean. Their garden, like an orchestra that’s well in harmony. So gardener, take your baton maestro, let there beauty be.

Diabetes

A reduced blood supply deprives the nerves of nutrients causing damage (neuropathy). This can be experienced as loss of sensation, tingling and numbness, burning or shooting pain, or inability to detect heat or cold. People often describe feeling like they are ‘walking on cotton wool’ or a ‘crunching’ sensation. Lack of pain awareness can lead to injury, untreated wounds, infection or ulceration, and in the worst case scenario amputation. Nerves that control the sweat glands in the feet and legs

Most people are aware that diabetics need to look after their feet but may not know why. Diabetes occurs where blood glucose is too high either because of the pancreas not producing any insulin (Type 1), or not enough insulin or insulin that is ineffective (Type 2). If not controlled efficiently diabetes can lead to poor circulation damaging the small blood vessels which supply the nerves. These arteries become ‘furred up’ (atherosclerosis) leading to a reduced blood supply and impaired healing, particularly affecting the feet. Foot or leg cramps may be experienced. High blood pressure, excess fat in the diet and smoking all increase the risk of poor circulation.

can be affected causing the skin to become dry and more prone to breaking if damaged. Anyone with diabetes should avoid walking barefoot as stepping on sharp objects may go undetected. Hot water bottles and radiators can cause injuries that the person is unaware of. Shoes need to fit well and be checked inside regularly for bumps or rough areas, and socks and slippers checked for seams that could rub and cause sores. The GP and diabetes specialist nurses can assist in maintaining normal blood glucose levels. A diabetic check with the GP surgery is recommended at least yearly and any signs of neuropathy should be discussed earlier if symptoms are noticed. Problems such as athlete’s foot, hard skin and nail problems need treating promptly and washing and drying the feet well, and moisturising dry skin are important. Moisturising cream should not be applied between the toes as it can make the area too moist and lead to maceration and skin breakdown. These simple measures can help to keep the feet in good condition and minimise problems.

LeLenses with full UVA and UVB protection will filter out the invisible ultraviolet radiation that can cause everything from sunburnt corneas to cataracts and cancer. All our sunglasses come with UV protection to the highest British and European standard and the UK’s UV400 and BSEN1836 marks also confirm lenses are fit for purpose. Sunglasses lenses come in many forms, each offering different benefits. Polarising lenses and anti-reflective coatings reduce glare from water, making them ideal for water sport enthusiasts. A wide range of lens materials are available, some of which are lightweight yet virtually shatterproof, while photochromic lenses automatically adjust their tint depending on light levels. Always ensure sunglasses completely cover your eyes, otherwise they won’t provide full UV protection. We’ll be happy to recommend frames that suit your facial shape and lifestyle requirements.

sunglasses hid all the damage as well as providing celebrities welcome anonymity. Today’s spectacles and sunglasses can be ordered with a variety of precision engineered coatings that perform specific roles. With so many options to choose from, it’s important to consider which coatings best match your lifestyle. Popular lens coatings include anti-reflective layers, which prevent reflections or dazzle from wet roads or the headlamp beams of oncoming vehicles. Transparent scratch-proof coatings are ideal for further extending the lifespan of today’s hard-wearing polycarbonate lenses. Hydrophobic layers can also repel water droplets, as well as shrugging off dirt. These are ideally suited for glasses worn by people with outdoor jobs, where rain and grime are often part of daily life. We will be happy to discuss the options available during your next visit to the practice. Always bring your glasses along to eye examinations, so we can make sure they’re still providing clear vision.

Ask us about our collection of Prescription Sunglasses! Did you know? Some lens tints and coatings can help patients who suffer from dyslexia. Ask us for more information.
