Also new is our Charity Focus page which this month saw me visit STEPS Conductive Education Centre, it was a real eye opening morning and so lovely to meet Trish and the team to see what an valuable work they do. I myself have a disabled child and to know that such a wonderful positive place exists is fantastic. We are also looking to launch a schools page and are looking for local schools to send us outstanding achievements from their pupils, we aren’t judging children against each other so we also want to hear about those who have achieved well for them, this could be academically or in life skills, behaviour or emotional skills. Each month a winner will be chosen who will be presented with a certificate and featured in our magazine. We are also launching our newest magazine this month! Steps Conductive Education Centre work hard every day to help the lives of young people who are affected with Motor Dysfunction or delay across the East Midlands. Situated in Shepshed they rely on donations and fundraising to carry out their important work. Conductive Education was pioneered in Hungary in the 1940’s by Dr Andras Peto. The method of teaching allows more children to be kept in mainstream schools. Conductive Education is a holistic approach centred on the child not the disability, the process - in which play is an integral element - stimulates continuous development in bodily control, mobility and communication, transforming the child’s confidence, motivation and well-being. Founded 18 years ago Steps only moved into to their purpose built home in 2007, prior to that they were renting rooms to carry out their vital work. Their luck changed when Patron Rosemary Conley funded a move which involved local tradesmen helping out and converting the old school building on Loughborough Road into the fantastic facility they have today, part of which is rented to Glebe House. Steps need to raise £200,000 pa to run and receive funding from Children in Need as well as their own fundraising events. Last year ‘A Question of Brains’ raised £97,000 and it is hoped that they can raise even more this year! Details about this year’s event are below. 26 families are currently on the books and Steps is their life line, not only providing conductive education for the children but also supporting parents too, as living with a disabled child is physically and emotionally exhausting and being able to talk with parents who are walking a similar path is vital. Steps also organise days out for the families which means parents can feel confident going out to public places with their child knowing they have the support of Steps if they encounter difficulties or prejudice. Steps have an open door policy and parents are able to self-refer, if you think Steps could help you contact Trish on 01509 506878 or visit www.stepscentre.org.uk

GREAT NEWS FOR JKM SWIM SCHOOL
I have some great news to share with you all. As of January 2014, we have secured more pool space at Hind Leys College Shepshed, where we currently hold our Thursday and Friday sessions. The days will be Saturday and Sunday, with times to be confirmed. (will be afternoons) This will not effect any of the current Saturday lessons. Any current swimmer wishing to change venue or any new clients please email jkmswim@yahoo.co.uk. Thanks as always to all my staff whom provide the excellent teaching and lifeguard, and the parents whom continue to support JKM Swim School. We are also looking at starting an adult only swim in October. This would be 9.30 or 10am on a Thursday morning at our Shepshed pool. £4 per session. Come along for a swim and get tips from our 2 swim teachers that will be around to help. Not being sold as a lesson so that even if you just fancy a keep fit swim session you are more than welcome to come along. Get in touch, please email jkmswim@yahoo.co.uk.
CLUB ON THE LOOKOUT FOR TOMORROW’S BIG HITTERS
Shepshed Badminton Club is looking for more children to join its ranks and become tomorrow’s big hitters. The club, which launched a junior session earlier this year, already has around 10 youngsters playing regularly at Shepshed High School on a Thursday night. Coach Eddie Andrews said: “It’s great to see how all the youngsters are coming on. When we started, none of them were hitting very much – but now they’ll get nine of 10 shots. “One lad told me when he started, ‘I’m rubbish at sport’. But he’s really enjoying it, coming back week after week, and it’s doing his confidence the world of good.” Already, the weekly sessions have been a great success, with some youngsters already being talent spotted for further training sessions. The club is looking for children aged between seven and 16-years-old – and they don’t even need to have picked up a badminton racket before. “The great thing about badminton is that you can play at any age. I’ve played players who are up in their 80s, and they still get the shots. “It’s also a family sport, you can all play together, and have fun and stay healthy.” For more information, call Eddie on 01530 242050.
SHEPSHED DYNAMO YOUTH & JUNIORS FOOTBALL CLUB UNDER 13’S NEW STRIP SPONSOR
Shepshed Dynamo Youth & Juniors U13’s football team has started the new season with a new strip sponsor. The new sponsor, Air Logistics Limited, is a cargo General Sales and Service Agent based at East Midlands Airport. Stephen Dawkins, Chief Operating Officer commented “Air Logistics are pleased to sponsor the new strip and support local clubs. We hope that it will bring the team luck for the forthcoming season.” Shepshed Dynamo Team Manager, Dave Freestone thanked Air Logistics and continued “the lads are really happy with their new kit and are enjoying playing their matches so far this season.” Shepshed Dynamo runs teams for a variety of age groups from U6 through to U16. If anyone has a child that is interested in joining the club please contact Mick Wattam, the club’s Secretary, for further details on 07801 691712 or email: mjw_sons@yahoo.co.uk The team have made a modest start to the season but, with the hard work and dedication of the players, the team are optimistic for the remainder of the season.
BENN NORMAN WINS MIDLANDS TITLE Shepshed ABC’s Benn Norman won his second Midland NABC title on October 26th at the Greene King Stadium, Hinckley. Benn beat Faluk Hussain (Windmill ABC) by a unanimous decision. This was the 4th time Benn and Faluk had fought, and this was Benn’s 3rd victory . Benn’s coach Shaun Norman said that it was the best Benn had ever boxed, especially being Faluk had been schooled for this bout. Benn is now through to the quarter finals of the National NABC championship, he fights in Mansfield later this month, he is yet to find out his opponent. Benn is confident that he can step up , and add the National title to his Midland title. Benn’s brother Louis is also in action soon. He faces Nathan Reeve for the English flyweight title at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on December 1st.

SHEPSHED FIRE STATION UPDATE
STOP PRESS
As Vice-Chairman of the Combined Fire Authority (Leicestershire, Leicester City and Rutland) I would like to bring you up to date with what is to happen with the Fire Station on Charnwood Road. Just to allay any fears you may have when you see contractors vehicles parked outside or leaving and entering. The Fire Authority will be spending approx. £150,000 on improvements to the building over the next few months. These improvements are to house the Authority’s Specialist training Incident Unit together with Commander and Tactical Decision Making Department.
At the meeting held on the 28th October at Charnwood Borough Council at which the Core Strategy was deliberated and voted on. All the Shepshed Borough Councillors spoke and voted against the report which will now go, following a six week public consultation before an Inspector.
The existing facilities for the (retained) fire fighters are also being improved. I have been working with the Shepshed fire fighters to make sure that the majority of their requirements have been met during this refit. I can confirm that the Fire Station will remain fully operational whilst this work is being carried out. After the refurbishment has been completed, this will mean that Shepshed’s Fire Station will be enhanced and used to full capacity. The section occupied by the Police is being retained. With most fires in the home starting accidentally, I wish to remind residents about a few simple safety checks and advice to help reduce the risk of a fire.
Following the recent death of Bernard Burr an Election to replace him on the Town Council is due to be held on November 21st. Residents will not be receiving polling cards as a reminder, but you are asked to go along to your usual voting station to cast your vote. The polling stations are at
The below information is given by the Fire Authority. • Test your smoke alarm – you are twice as likely to die in a fire in your home if you don’t have one. Also change the battery if needed. • Smoking – never smoke in bed or in a chair in which you might fall asleep, stub cigarettes out properly and dispose of them carefully. • Candles – keep out of reach of children, never leave them unattended, put them out properly and leave them to cool down before moving. • Boilers – make sure boilers have been serviced in the past 12 months to ensure they are safe. If you are in a rented property contact your landlord. • Electrics – turn heaters off, turn off electrical appliances and unplug when not in use. • Open fires – have your chimney swept regularly, avoid burning wet wood, always use a fire guard and never use flammable liquids. • Cooking – don’t cook if tired or if you have been drinking, never leave pans unattended and make sure cookers are turned off when you have finished using them. • Exits – keep door and window keys where everyone can find them and keep escape routes clear of rubbish or bulky items. I was recently privileged to be invited to see a joint exercise involving the Emergency Services (Fire, Police and Ambulance). The exercise was a simulated train crash involving a car and mini-bus and utilised volunteers to simulate the dead and injured. I found it most interesting to see the extensive range of equipment the Fire Service can call upon – and have been fully trained to use - when dealing with major incidents.

We will all be working together to get the best for Shepshed and its residents. Cllrs. Liz Bebbington, Jane Lennie, Claire Poole and Christine Radford.
TOWN COUNCIL ELECTION
The Glenmore Centre and Town Council Offices. The main three parties are the only ones fielding candidates to replace Bernard for the West area of Shepshed. This election will cost the Town Council over £3,000 and it would have cost a further £1,000 to have polling cards sent out.

CHRISTINE RADFORD | BOROUGH COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN Tel: 01509 262723 - Email: christine_radford@hotmail.com
My role as a Borough Councillor can be very varied and interesting, dealing with housing problems, neighbour problems or planning issues. Planning has taken up most of my time, with new applications on land off Hallamford Road (the road leading from Shepshed to Belton) called Twin Brooks and even more off Tickow Lane. I am pleased to report that TPO’s (tree preservation orders) have now been put on the majority of the trees on development land at the junction of Tickow Lane with Anson Road. (Wm. Davis site) Furthermore, following talks with the Tree Officer at Charnwood, I have been given an assurance that the remaining development land will have the trees inspected to see which trees warrant preservation orders put on them.
facilities such as schools, health centres, shops or land set aside for employment or leisure (such as football etc.).
A meeting has been arranged with officers from the County and Borough to look at the proposed access for the new planning application for 32 properties on land at the junction of Oakley Road with Belton Street. I feel that the proposed access which is opposite to the entrance to New Walks is too close to the proposed double mini round-about at the junction of Oakley Road with Tickow Lane.
I wished to know where in the report did it mention where the money was coming from to maintain the Historical Area, which currently houses the Temple of Venus etc. for maintenance and improvement purposes. I voted against the Core Strategy as it is. It was however eventually voted through and following a six week consultation period in which local residents can comment it will go before an Inspector for his deliberation.
The recent meeting at Charnwood Borough Council to deliberate and vote on the Core Strategy for future housing developments around the Borough took place on Monday evening 28th October. I spoke and raised my concerns regarding the amount of housing being proposed West of Shepshed There are no infrastructure details, extra
I continue to hold a monthly surgery in the Town Council offices with other Conservative Councillors from 10-11am on the last Saturday of every month except December.
I also spoke about the area known as Garendon. Councillors only had 3 minutes in which to speak, my comments were short regarding this area which is between, Hathern, Loughborough and the M1.

I understand, but not had it confirmed at the time of going to press, that work has had to stop on the development at the bottom of Anson Road with Tickow Lane, due to The Environmental Agency having
concerns about where the runoff water will be going. They have concerns about it going into the Black Brook. I and other Councillors, together with local residents did raise the problem with this area always getting flooded at the time the planning application was deposited with Charnwood. I will keep everybody informed when I have further information.

together with the Chairman of the Town Council Joan Tassell to sit on the Host table with me to listen to resident’s concerns.
As County Councillor I called a public meeting on 4th October, to enable residents to inspect and discuss the recent planning application for 270 houses off Hathern Road (P/13/1641/2). I invited the 2 Ward Cllrs. Liz Bebbington and Claire Poole
Building so close to the Motorway (Noise and pollution) was the major concern, together with building on yet another greenfield site. As County Councillor I have issues with the access road being near to a bend on the Hathern Road.
I am pleased to report that I have again been elected to Chair the panel which oversees the Homes in which LCC’s Children in Care are being looked after. This involves going into homes owned and run by LCC and private homes in which our Children are homed and cared for. I also sit on the panel which discusses ‘Safeguarding’ and was given information of how to spot the signs of Child Sexual Exploitation. If any resident has concerns regarding any child, then do not hesitate to contact Social Services on 0116 3050005 or email: childrensduty@leics.gov.uk I hold a monthly surgery at the Council Offices in Shepshed between 10-11am on the last Saturday of every month except December.

DECK THE HALL WITH BOUGHS OF HOLLY The hall to be ‘decked’ is St Botolph’s Church Hall in Shepshed; the decorations will be for the Victorian Christmas Market to be held on Saturday the 30th November. The doors will open at 10 o’clock and Santa will arrive soon afterwards, bringing gifts to hand out to the children whilst listening to their requests. It is anticipated that people will be able to tick a considerable number of items off their Christmas presents’ lists. Much of what is for sale, on the wide variety of stalls, will be new, thus providing gift- buying opportunities. Many of the items will be beautifully hand-crafted, including sweets and Christmas decorations. As always the expert bakers and cooks from the congregation will sell delicious cakes and preserves from their stall. In addition people always enjoy browsing through the second-hand books, finding a bargain amongst the toys, and this year, selecting a duck from the ‘duck’ stall! Everyone likes a game of chance and once again the gaily-decorated bottles on the bottle tombola are bound to be very popular, as will other such attractions. A superb Christmas hamper is the first prize in the Prize Draw. The Christmas Market is a great social occasion with visitors sitting enjoying the lunches and drinks on offer. It is hoped that some of this year’s food will be cooked on a barbecue, and that people will appreciate the Victorian atmosphere created in the Hall, whilst shopping, eating, browsing and socialising. The event ends at 2.30pm.
CHRISTMAS LUNCH AT THE GLENMORE CENTRE The Glenmore Centre will once again be hosting a Christmas Day Lunch for anyone from Shepshed who would otherwise be spending Christmas alone. A delicious three course Christmas Lunch is provided as well as music, drinks and a raffle. Transport can be provided if necessary. Anyone wishing to attend or wanting to find out more information should contact Victoria Jacques on 01509 650662 or Bernie Blood on 01509 508872. We are also looking for volunteers to help on the day. Anyone able to help should contact Victoria or Bernie as above.
