SHEPSHED SHOW RAISES OVER £6000 The Shepshed Show committee are delighted to announce that the show acted as a platform for charities and local groups to raise over £4200 for their causes. The show also raised a further £2000 towards future community events such as Smart and Sparkle and the Shepshed Show 2014, with the ultimate goal of holding a Christmas market at some point in the future. The huge success of the show was largely down to community spirit, the committee of volunteers, all from Shepshed and the army of volunteers who worked tirelessly on Continued on page 4

Shepshed Pharmacist Retires Jay Mehta, a wellloved Shepshed pharmacist, has retired after 31 years of valued service in the town. Health professionals and customers gathered at the pharmacy in Charnwood Road on 19 June to wish Jay a long and happy retirement, and to enjoy the refreshments which Jay & Menahad generously provided. Jay lives in Leicester and estimates that he has commuted around half-a-million miles in the course of his long career!

Pictured at the presentation are (left to right): Jean Blood, Dr Badiani, Mrs Badiani, Mrs Mehta, Carole Whitehead (Forest House Surgery), Coun Joan Tassell (chair of Shepshed Town Council), Linda Oliver (pharmacy assistant), Jay Mehta, Colin Pickles (Vantage Pharmacy), & Coun Diane Horn (Council vice-chair).

Presentations to Jay were made by Dr Kamlesh Badiani, senior partner of Forest House Surgery, including a voucher for golf coaching donated by the practice doctors, and a bottle or two and a large card signed by staff at the surgery. Not to be outdone, customers’ subscriptions provided a cheque, a card bearing the names of 120 wellwishers, a framed collage of aspects of Charnwood featuring line drawings by Brian Hollingshead, flowers for the ladies and a specially commissioned pottery figure. The latter had been crafted by Shepshed potter Jean Blood of Oddbods Ceramics depicting Jay behind the pharmacy counter surrounded by bottles, packets, prescriptions and a mobile phone. A mug of coffee and a bag of golf clubs lie within easy reach. The pharmacy is continuing in the capable hands of Bhavik Naran, and as Jay will personally provide relief cover for the foreseeable future, he will not be completely disappearing from the Shepshed scene.

BOROUGH COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN by Christine Radford My role as a Borough Councillor can be very varied and interesting, dealing with housing problems, neighbour problems or planning issues. As Borough Councillor I have raised concerns with Charnwood regarding the amount of planning applications currently being lodged for development around Shepshed and the problems that this will cause. To this end I have booked the Glenmore Centre on Thorpe Road on Friday 12th July at 7pm, to enable residents to raise their concerns, mainly regarding the detailed application for 85 houses on land at the junction of Anson Road with Tickow Lane. I shall have available large scale hard copies of the proposals. Other applications in the pipe line are for 400 plus houses on the rest of the land on Tickow Lane up to the old railway line and houses the other side of Tickow Lane behind Westroyd Care Home. I am pleased to say that I have been invited by Nicky Morgan MP to the meeting she has organised with the Planning Minister on 19th July. I shall raise concerns and issues which residents have discussed with me regarding the amount of houses we are having to have, without due thought to the lack of improved infrastructure. I hold a monthly surgery in the Town Council offices with other Conservative Councillors from 10-11 on the last Saturday of the month except December, or I can be contacted any time on 01509 502974 or 07796 544817 or e mail christine_radford@hotmail.com.

SHEPSHED SHOW RAISES OVER £6000 continued from page 1 the day and with the setting up and clearing away. Keleigh Atkin from the show committee said “The show is an amazing example of what motivated people can do and all of it achieved with volunteers who gave their time and energy for a worthy cause.” Figures taken from the gate at the show indicate that over 3000 people attended the show on 15th June 2013. Given the weather this was a fantastic turnout.Over 20 organisations including charities, local groups and schools benefitted from the show including The Shepshed Lions who raised in excess of £1000 and 4th Shepshed Scout Group who raised £418. Other local charities that benefitted include 2nd Shepshed Rainbows, Shepshed Volunteer Centre and The Glenmore Centre. Local schools also did well on the day with the Friends of St Botolph’s raising £334.

Presidents Day at Shepshed RFC Saturday 18th May 2013 Shepshed RFC hosted its annual Presidents Day game that saw a Shepshed RFC XV take on a Presidential Invitational XV. In these two teams were vastly different characteristics. The Shepshed XV was full of youthful exuberance and the Presidents XV full of experience and guile. Hordes of supporters joined in the fun, indulging in the BBQ provided by Lee Joynes of the Bottom Railway pub. The game itself was played in high spirits in tune with the ethos of the club with the Presidents XV ending the game victorious, winning by the slimest of margins 28 –26. Todays events were followed by the clubs presentation evening at Charnwood golf Club that saw awards handed to the following: Simon Wilkens – Outstanding Contribution to Shepshed RFC Keir Grummitt – Players Player of the Year Nathan Villiers – Top Try Scorer Tom Pitt – Most Improved Player Nick Farmer & Karl Walshe – Clubmen of the Year

Vicky Coomber, Vice Chair of the committee added “The show empowered local groups and charities to raise money for their cause, have fun but also raise awareness of their organisations. Money is very tight these days and often charities have to rely on donations from other charities or grants: however the vast number of varied groups involved with the show demonstrates that many local groups want to work hard and raise their own money” The feedback from the show has been fantastic with so much positivity and praise for the event it has really spurred the committee to book for 2014. To avoid clashing with the Download Festival The committee have decided to move the show back a week to Saturday 21st June 2014. So get it into your diaries ready for next year. ,The committee is always looking for new volunteers, if you are interested in becoming more involved in the Shepshed Show 2014 or would like to hold a stall please email us at shepshedshow@gmail.com or alternatively contact us via our website www.shepshedcommunityplan.org or facebook www.facebook.com/help/443483272359009 or you can tweet us @TheShepshedShow . Finally the show committee would like to thank everybody who came out to support the show and for their constructive feedback .

Pre-season training resumes on Wednesday 19th June 2013 at 19:00 Shepshed High School pitches. Everyone of all sizes and ability are welcome to come down to watch or join in. Follow us on Twitter for more updates and news @shepshedrfc

County Badge awarded to Shepshed Bowler Ten years ago Shepshed's Cynthia Stock joined Shepshed Town Bowls Club having never bowled a wood before in her life. What was originally "a bit of fun" has now led to Cynthia regularly being picked to play for Leicestershire Ladies and and she is pictured here receiving her County badge from LLCBA President Ann Ward. Cynthia said "it was a great honour to be awarded my County Badge, something I never dreamed would happen when I first started bowling. It just goes to show that anything is possible!"

Shepshed WI June Meeting 2013 Members enjoyed a meeting with a difference in June when a fellow member did a flower arranging demonstration and then it was up to them to create their own. Some members who thought they couldn’t arrange flowers were very pleased with what they had achieved and had fun in the process. Committee member Denise Heffer gave a report on the National WI AGM which she had recently attended in Cardiff as a delegate, and said she thoroughly enjoyed the experience of attending such a large meeting. She said that as a relatively new member of the WI she had learnt a lot about the organisation. The speaker for the July meeting will be Geoffrey Smith whose talk will be entitled ‘Behind the Scenes at the Chelsea Flower Show’. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at Christchurch Methodist Church, Field Street, Shepshed at 7.30 pm and visitors are most welcome.

An Update from your MP, Nicky Morgan Firstly, huge congratulations to everyone involved in the highly successful and enjoyable Shepshed Show last month. I was there just after the official opening and there were loads of people present and lots going on. Thank you to the Shepshed Lions for their delicious barbecue and my son loved the donkey ride! As I have said before these events do not happen without a lot of hard work and months of planning so I hope those involved are now taking a well-earned rest. On Friday 21 June the Shepshed Business Forum which I have set up, with Cllr Christine Radford, held its second meeting at the Town Council Offices. As well as discussing how the forum can be most effective in supporting Shepshed’s businesses and entrepreneurs and

promote all they offer to local residents we heard about a programme to help businesses navigate all the regulations they have to deal with. The Better Business for All provides a single contact point to regulatory services with free advice on complying with the law for businesses in Leicester and Leicestershire. Help is available for queries on areas such as health and safety, environmental protection, waste, licensing, fire safety, trading standards, taxation, employment law and planning. Anyone interested can call 0871 384 3185 or visit www.llep.org.uk/betterbusinessforall In the last couple of weeks I spent a few days in Bangladesh representing the UK as a Minister at the 10th Commonwealth Women’s Affairs Ministers Meeting. The theme of this meeting was “Women’s Leadership for Enterprise”. It was truly fascinating to hear about the progress being made on gender equality and women’s empowerment across our fellow Commonwealth countries. I highlighted the recent Women’s Business Council report www.womensbusinesscouncil.dcms.gov.uk/ and the importance of

ensuring young girls, in particular, think about all career options which should be open to them – and not just those they might typically think of. I hope you know by now that Charnwood Borough Council is consulting on the “soundness” of its draft Core Strategy until 22 July. This is a very important document for Shepshed – and also for Charnwood and it needs to be robust so it stands up to scrutiny when it is publicly examined by a Government-appointed Inspector. If you have views on the proposals please do add your comments at http://localplan.charnwood.gov.uk/. I continue to get lots of e-mails and casework from Shepshed on all sorts of issues including benefits queries as well as national policy questions. If you are in need of assistance or simply want to tell me what you think about Government policy please do get in touch. Mass Walk across Garendon Green Wedge on Sunday 16th June Over 300 Campaigners joined in a Mass Walk across Garendon Green Wedge objecting to Charnwood Borough Council plans to build 3,000+ houses on the Garendon Estate. Walkers, Cyclists, Children, Local Councillors – and many dogs! – from Shepshed, Loughborough and Hathern, all met at the Red Arch on the edge of the listed Garendon Park to show their determination to save the beautiful, traffic free countryside and agricultural land from the devastation of a proposed new town. Children carried a banner proclaiming ‘SAY NO TO DEVELOPMENT ON GARENDON GREEN WEDGE’ Lynda Needham, Chair of Garendon Park and Countryside Protection Group (GPCPG), made an impassioned plea to the crowd to participate in the current Consultation on the Core Strategy. Supporters should write to the Borough Council to register their opposition to the proposed New Town on Garendon. Lynda also thanked the people for joining the Mass Walk and reported that membership of GPCPG was now well over 800 with some 4,000 Charnwood residents signing the hard copy and online petitions. ‘With your help, we can win this Campaign!’ Lynda concluded. Three Public Meetings, at Glenmore Centre, Hathern Community Centre and Gorse Covert Community Centre, were also held to give Charnwood residents a chance to air their views and ask questions about the Core Strategy. The meetings were well attended and residents expressed their concerns not only about houses proposed for Garendon, but also plans to build more than a thousand houses on countryside west of Shepshed, on Tickow Lane and Oakley Road. Other developments south of the A512, including Iveshead Road, were also criticised. Everyone agreed that it was unfair that all the houses to be built in North Charnwood were focused on Shepshed.

New President of Shepshed Lions Club At a recent dinner evening in Shepshed Town Council Offices, Dave Jackson took over as President of Shepshed Lions Club from Bill Holland. Handing over the chain of office, Bill thanked all members of the Club and the public of Shepshed for their support over the last twelve months, saying, 'The Club can look back on another hugely successful year. Membership now stands at 25, and the Carnival is firmly established as an important fixture in the town's annual calendar. The people of Shepshed were more generous than ever when we helped Santa tour the streets in the two weeks before Christmas, and an important new event for us was the party we organised for our senior citizens last September in St Botolph's Church Hall. The amount of money we have been able to raise has gone to a wide range of local causes, including Scouts and Guides, the Holiday Club, the Salvation Army, the community bus, Passion, English federation of disabled sport, Ashby Statutes fair for disabled children, Scallywags play group, St. John's ambulance, Neal academy, Dolphin swimming club, Oxlea school, Glenmore Christmas lunch, Heart research uk, Churches together, Glenmore centre kitchen project, Miracles to believe and The Autistic society along with individual members of our community who have needed help. On top of this, we can reflect on some practical projects that have improved the town, such as the tree planting, that will show benefits for years to come.' Incoming President Dave Jackson pledged to continue the good work that has been done, and take the Club even further, saying, 'The extraordinary generosity of the people and businesses in Shepshed is at the heart of our success as a Club, and no doubt this will continue. We are looking at new and exciting challenges for the coming year, not least the establishment of a defibrillator scheme, which is being led by Lion Bob Lilley, and I am delighted to take over as President at this exciting time.'

Working Together

Council Notice

It was reported at the Annual Meeting of the Town Council that some Shepshed residents on benefits are finding it difficult to afford the bus fare to visit the Carpenters Arms in Loughborough to collect food parcels.

Shepshed Town Council would like to request that, in the interest of health & safety, NO GOLF is to be played on any of its parks and open spaces.

Councillors Diane Horne and Christine Radford have accordingly arranged to visit the Carpenters Arms to see how things are organised and Judith Spence who runs the Carpenters Arms has agreed to come to speak to the Town Council on July 10th.

Love Parks Week

27 July - 4 August 2013 More than 30 million of us in England make good use of our parks – a tenth of us visit one daily, and more than half of us visit one every week. Now there is even a week to ‘celebrate’ our local parks. Certainly a daily walk in the park has been found to be good for your health: not only does the exercise help prevent serious diseases, but it has been found that walking in green spaces can help to reduce stress (unless your dog has run off and vanished!) This year, Love Parks Week will celebrate our parks with everything from jazz nights to nature trails to street dancing. For a list of what you might find near you, visit www.loveparksweek.org

Stephenson College opens new Lee Stafford Hairdressing Academies Stephenson College has joined forces with celebrity hairdresser Lee Stafford to open two new hairdressing academies. The first will be at the College’s main campus site in Coalville and the second on Maid Marian Way in Nottingham city centre. The new academies will offer young people high quality hairdressing training. Students will develop their skills in a commercial working environment which will help increase their standard of work, professionalism, and enhance their employability skills. Courses are available for both full time students and Apprentices. The College looks forward to continuing working with their current employers and developing links with new partners. The superb facilities will be complimented by a highly trained team of stylists who will spend months perfecting their techniques under the careful supervision of Lee Stafford. Stephenson College recently promoted ‘An evening with Lee Stafford’ at the Coalville campus where Lee mesmerised the audience with some stunning hair demonstrations, punctuated by interesting tips and funny stories. The following day the Lee Stafford ‘roadshow’ then rolled into the Broadmarsh Centre in Nottingham where he entertained many of the interested shoppers. COUNTY COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN by Christine Radford As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal, with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. I am pleased to report that I have been asked to be Vice-chairman of the Leicestershire and Rutland Fire Authority for the forthcoming year. Following my concerns regarding the improvements on the bend at the junction of Iveshead Road, Moult Hill and Charley Road. I had a site meeting, with concerned residents, Chairman of Shepshed Town Council together with the Clerk to Shepshed Town Council, and officers from Leicestershire County Council who assured me that further works are to be carried out at this junction. I have been working with Nicky Morgan MP in setting up a Business Forum and we have had our second business meeting and shall be working with the Community Planning Group to set up a Business Database which will enable residents to gain information as to what is available in Shepshed and to enable businesses to keep the public up to date with what they are doing. If you have concerns about speeding traffic on any road in Shepshed please contact speed@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk to report it, with if possible the registration number along with the date and time. Similarly if you are concerned about lorries violating the weight restriction zone report this to weight.restricted@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk again with details of the registration number along with the date and time and also if possible the owner of the vehicle. Pot holes to be reported to 0116 3050001, but you will be asked for how large and deep the hole is. Street lighting 0116 3052282. I hope this information will be usefull to you in reporting your concerns. I hold a monthly surgery at the Council Offices in Shepshed between 10-11 am on the last Saturday of the month (except December). You can contact me by e mail on christine_radford@hotmail.com or by telephone on 502974 or 07796 544817

Rotary Club of Shepshed The guest speaker on Monday 24th. June was Mr. Jason Laver who gave a fascinating account of the challenge of “4 mountains, 600 miles cycling and 13,000 feet climbing. “He described the team which undertook this great challenge as “Mad”. They started their effort with a climb of Ben Nevis proceeding the next day by cycling 85 miles to Cameron. 91 miles the next day via Glasgow to Seathwaite. A mere 90 miles next day took them into England. That sort of pattern continued climbing Scafell Pike followed by two more days cycling before attempting the climb up Mount Snowdon. Great disappointment here as not only was the café at the top closed and the train not running because of the weather but they were unable to gaze across westward to see the beautiful Isle Of Anglesey. After a climb of 7.8 miles rising over 2,000 feet they had not anticipated that the café would be closed and they had not brought any sandwiches . Oh dear!. Next day they cycled on to Holyhead taking the ferry to Dublin and cycling 91 miles in to Northern Ireland. They completed this great effort the next day by cllmbing Slieve Donard. Four countries – Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Yes! They had their mishaps such as punctures, stumbles etc but what a great effort all in the cause of two charities, namely Diabetes UK and Maggie’s. For further details re the charities contact website “Peaksandpedals.co.uk. All members of the club enjoyed the talk, witnessed by the time spent on questions at the end of the illustrated talk. Pictured is Mt. Jason Laver being welcomed by President Jennie Warner...

Discounted Advance National Forest Wood Fair Tickets Now Available To Purchase Advance tickets are now on sale for the National Forest Wood Fair. With 20% discount on the gate prices, book in advance and get a fantastic family day out for just £20. Go online and book now for a brilliant end of summer hols event. This year’s National Forest Wood Fair takes place on Bank Holiday Monday 26 August at Beacon Hill Country Park, and will be packed with activities for everyone to enjoy. Children will love the climbing wall, the birds of prey, paddling a coracle, eco art and ranger-led craft activities. There will be plenty for parents to try as well – whether it’s pole lathe turning, willow weaving or pulling a draw knife on a shave horse (nothing to do with the four-legged variety!) The sawdust will fly once the lumberjacks take the stage, and the chainsaw sculptors slice and tease magnificent shapes out of lumps of wood. See massive log chippers in action, and the wood mizer slice through planks of wood like butter. Richard Drakeley, Tourism Development and Promotions Officer for the National Forest Company said: “The National Forest Wood Fair has a reputation for being a fun, family event, a perfect day out for families who like things to do, with quirky activities to try, and plenty of good value, beautiful things to buy. Don’t forget the charity auction at the end of the day, when hand-crafted items from many of the stall holders are up for sale to the highest bidder.” The opening hours for this year’s show have been extended, with admission from 9 am until 6 pm, giving visitors even more opportunity to make the most of all the attractions on offer. A free park and ride service will be available from Leicestershire County Council’s County Hall at Glenfield, Leicester. The National Forest Wood Fair is run by the National Forest Company in partnership with Leicestershire County Council. It is held in the stunning setting of Beacon Hill Country Park, just five minutes from the M1, junctions 22/23.
