The Monthly luncheon of the Shepshed Probus club held at Junction 23 Truckstop Restaurant took place on Monday 01/07/2019. Following the agenda, the President welcomed the members and the replacement speaker. The apologies for absence were given in the names of Phillip Moore, Gordon Mason, and the Speaker Keith Hodgkinson. The Secretary then confirmed that the Probus magazine was still available to be collected. He then continued to explain the reason for the change of speaker at short notice, which was over night illness, and an inhouse speaker had been chosen in the form of the Past President. The next item on the agenda being Stan White giving a few funny stories, and as usual maintained the usual hilarity. Grace was then said prior to us all having an excellent meal. The raffle was drawn with the winner receiving a welcome boost to his income. The stand in Speaker then gave a talk on how the Tregilgas family [ of which, his wife is a member ] migrated from Cornwall to Lancashire, following the death of the head of the family caused by the involvement in an underground explosion at Pensilva mine. The year being the late 19th century. The wife trekked to Burnley, Lancashire, with a hand cart full of her belongings, heavily pregnant, and 4 sons. They found accommodation with her sister and family, the expectant mother produced her 5th child who was the speaker's wife's grandfather, which is how the story can be told years later. After the end of the first world war in 1918, Eustace Tregilgas, [the elder brother to the speaker's wife's grandfather ] who had been a military bandsman, applied for the position of Bandmaster of Christchurch military brass band, and being successful eventually moved on to the N. Island, becoming band master of the Rotorua military brass band. He raised a large family in Rotorua, who in the fullness of time multiplied exponentially, until the time when the speaker and his wife went on holiday in 2004 came across and met approximately 20 of the family Tregilgas, of whom all the male members were exact replicas of his wife's grandad. The final point of interest in this story, is that Eustace married his wife Ethel in St John the Baptist Church, Burnley, where the speaker and his wife were married 48 years later. The talk was well received, and was given the usual round of applause.

Shepshed Carnival All Set for lift Off Article by Ann Bodycote
Wander Garden Nature Reserve Subjected To Vandalism
Shepshed Lions are working hard to get everything in place for this year's Carnival on August Bank Holiday Monday, 26th August 2019. Lions President Bill Holland said, "We have a really exciting programme this year, with a stuntman, steel band and tug of war set to run alongside Punch and Judy and all the other attractions that have made Shepshed Carnival such a popular event in the town's calendar. There is something for all the family, and as usual we will be keeping costs down to make it an event that everyone can enjoy without worrying about the cost. Every penny of profit made by the Lions at Carnival goes to charity - all the Club members give their time freely - and we especially support local good causes, as our recent contributions to Hathern Training Band and Shepshed Dynamo under 18s demonstrate. So we are hoping that once again thousands of people will come to Glenmore Park on Bank Holiday Monday between 11 and 4 to make this the most successful Shepshed Carnival yet."

On Friday I visited the Wander Garden, Nature Reserve off Blacksmiths Avenue and was disappointed to see that the Notice Board had been subjected to a substantial amount of deliberate vandalism. Again, Council Tax Payers of Shepshed will suffer the cost of expenditure to replace the Notice Board.

Shepshed Resident David Stevenson Publishes His First Book Article by David Stevenson
With his 80th birthday rapidly approaching Shepshed resident David Stevenson has just published his first book. It’s entitled “One for the Road - a Search for Faith in a Sceptical Age”. As suggested by the title the book takes a progressive approach to religion, seeing the critical biblical analysis of the past 200 years and the discoveries of science as friends rather than enemies in the ongoing quest for truth. The intention is not to antagonise people secure in their belief but rather to offer a way forward to those for whom the traditional tenets of faith are no longer invigorating nor even credible. It is hoped that the book will prompt reflection in readers who may not fully share its conclusions. The publication carries the welcome endorsement of a peer on the front cover and a bishop on the back and is expected to have an appeal overseas as well as in the UK. Copies can be obtained from the author at 9 Anson Road, Shepshed LE12 9LA. Please enclose a cheque for £7.00 inclusive of postage.

Shepshed Nursery Raises £1,000 For Local Children’s Hospice Article by Chris Mitchell
Funds raised at Summer Fair held to celebrate the 30th birthday of Children 1st Day Nurseries with all proceeds donated to Rainbows Hospice for children and young people as part of company’s pledge to support 30 good causes throughout its anniversary year. Children, staff and parents at a popular Shepshed nursery, Children 1st @ Shepshed, are pleased to have raised £1,000 for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People at its Summer Fair which took place last weekend. As well as guest appearances from Pepper Pig and Elsa from Frozen, there were craft and food stalls, a tombola and raffle tickets on sale. Despite the rain, the event was attended by several hundred people from the local area, including pupils past and present. The event raised £460 on the day and this has been match-funded and contributed to by the company to bring the overall total to £1,000. In addition to supporting Rainbows, the Summer Fair was organised to celebrate Children 1st Day Nurseries’ 30th anniversary. With the best interests of children and their families at the heart of its ethos, the company, which has five nurseries in Leicestershire decided to mark this significant milestone with a year-long programme of activity to raise funds for a range of children’s clubs, charities, groups and local initiatives. The company has pledged to match fund all proceeds raised by its 24 nurseries as part of this. The nursery consulted with staff, parents and carers to identify the local organisations which they plan to support throughout the year. For the Summer Fair, it was decided that the money raised, along with contributions from directors and staff at the company’s head office in Long Eaton, would be donated to Rainbows.
8 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news
Tracey Highton manager of Children 1st @ Shepshed comments: “Several years ago the team here at Shepshed sadly said goodbye to one of the young children in our care due to a terminal illness. Rainbows provides incredible care for children and young people, helping to brighten up short lives, so it is a cause close to all our hearts. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported our 30th Birthday Summer Fair. We know our donation will directly benefit someone locally when they are going through a tough time.” Children 1st Day Nurseries plans further fundraising activity throughout its 30th anniversary year across its 24 settings within the Midlands and South Yorkshire. Since the company was formed in 1988 by Margaret Mason OBE and her family, it has grown to be one of the UK’s leading, family owned, childcare providers, with 83% of its settings rated as ‘Outstanding in All Areas’ by Ofsted. The company now cares for 3,621 children and employs over 600 people. Margaret Mason, Children 1st Founder and Chief Executive comments: “To celebrate our anniversary we wanted to involve all our settings and their local communities who have shown great support over the last 30 years. It’s our nursery teams, parents, carers, many of whom have been with us since we started, along with the local community, that have helped to make Children 1st the successful company it is today.” “We felt it was important to use this wonderful milestone to help children and their families who are facing difficult times and to do this throughout the year, so we have maximum impact. I am therefore delighted to support local and national good causes with a range of events at our nurseries.”
Many of our regular events shut down for the summer holiday, but these events continue: Sundays 10.30 am Morning Worship at Belton Street Chapel including Discoverers and Explorers for children. 6.00 pm Evening Worship at Kirkhill Thursdays 7.30 pm Bible Study and Prayer Meeting at Kirkhill For more information on any of these activities please visit www.shepshedwordoflife.org and click on ‘regular meetings and activities’, or ring 07473 952161, or email us at contact@ shepshedwordoflife.org

Stay Well On Your Travels Article by Gary Trickett
Making A Difference At Steps Article by Janet Russell
The Shepshed charity, Steps, loves having visitors so that they can experience at first hand the amazing service that is provided for children with motor disabilities and delays such as cerebral palsy and Down’s syndrome. Unlike many other settings, Steps also includes the parents of the children who attend, involving them in the holistic, therapeutic process which is being used with their child, thus forming an essential three-way partnership which is key to the work that is undertaken. A recent visitor, Mehmooda Duke, who is a medical negligence lawyer from Leicester, popped into the centre where the charity’s patron, Rosemary Conley was ready to give a guided tour. Mehmooda saw a typical session in action where a practitioner and a parent were working with a child on a series of movements accompanied as always by plenty of singing! Mehmooda was clearly very moved by what she saw and later told the centre manager, Janet Russell, “It was an honour and a privilege to visit and engage with you all. I am humbled by the life-changing work that is being done and if I can help in any way to make a difference to the lives that you are trying to change, I will.” The process which is the basis of the service provided at Steps is called Conductive Education. It was developed by Dr. Andras Peto in Hungary in the 50’s and it has as its focus ‘ability’ rather than ‘disability’. Dr. Peto’s revolutionary method of bringing about sometimes enormous progress in the lives of the children in his care is at the heart of the service offered free of charge by the Steps charity. Janet said, “We were delighted to welcome Mehmooda to our centre so that we could thank her for the very generous donation that she made to our charity. It costs £250,000 every year to run the centre and we have to raise most of this money ourselves so we are really grateful for every penny that is given to us. Once Mehmooda had seen Steps in action, she doubled her donation! This will enable us to make two more places available for children with motors disorders, along with their parents who we also support.” Janet added, “We should love to hear from anyone who would like to help us change children’s lives by making either a one-off donation or by adopting us as their designated charity, whether you are a small, local business or a major company. Individuals who want to make a little donation can take advantage of our new ‘text to give’ system by texting the word STEPS to 70660 to give £5. If you would like to help us to raise funds, please give me a ring on 01509 506878 or take a look at our website www.stepscentre.org.uk”

Looking forward to getting away this summer? The following tips should help to make sure your holiday is memorable for all the right reasons. Bolster your defences. A strong immune system is important at all times but especially so when we travel. The stuffy confines of an airplane cabin are the perfect breeding ground for germs. Echinacea purpurea is one of the best immune-supporting herbs there is, so make sure this makes it into your hand luggage. Take the stress out of the journey with Jan de Vries Emergency Essence. It can help to restore balance and is particularly popular with reluctant flyers. Support your digestive health with a good prebiotic supplement before and when you travel. Don’t eat anything that looks undercooked or raw and avoid buffet food that may not have been kept at the right temperature. By far the most common cause of tummy trouble abroad and diarrhoea especially, is dirty or contaminated water. Only drink bottled or canned drinks and remember also not to use ice in your drinks. If you do succumb to ‘holiday tum’, drink plenty of water to help prevent dehydration; experts recommend between two and three litres a day especially if you’re in a hot climate. If mosquitoes and biting insects are a problem, a good insect repellent on exposed skin should help. Neem seed extract is a popular alternative to DEET-containing sprays and the scent of neem masks your individual scent, making you less easy to find. Finally, have fun in the sun but do so safely. Always wear a good SPF and avoid sitting in the sun when it’s at its strongest. Bon voyage! For further advice, visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester.

Shepshed History Society Article by Marjorie Schulz
July 9th saw the Shepshed History Society being entertained by Mr Robert Mee whose very interesting talk delved back into the life of George Bradshaw the very notable author of the Bradshaw Railway Guide which first began back in the 1820's.Born in 1801, he began his working life by becoming an engraver at a printing works and at the same time he became a devout Quaker and philanthropist. When his guides were first published they deviated from the norm by not giving the months by name, instead the used numbers, like May would be the. 5th This was because Quakers did not acknowledge the calendar names as they were Roman Gods. George travelled to Oslo in Norway in 1853 but sadly caught cholera and died there, and he was buried in this country. Meanwhile his guides lived on until 1961 when Dr Beecham in his infinite wisdom decided to close down the steam railways for good. Mr Mee then gave an interesting railway tour that might have taken place in George's time and it was a very interesting and enjoyable talk all round. The August meeting of the society will be on the 13th when society members are booked onto a boat trip including a cooked lunch.
Arriva 126/127 Leicester Coalville Revised Route Article by Brenda Snape
Following feedback from their customers, Arriva are revising the route of buses coming from Shepshed to use Greenclose Lane and The Rushes rather than Regent Street and Derby Road; this gives an alighting stop closer to the shops than current. There is no change to the route of outbound journeys as these already operate via The Rushes and Ashby Square. Arriva have now submitted these changes to the Traffic Commissioners which will take effect from 25th August 2019. Summertime Care With Aromatherapy Natural Aromatherapy Insect Repellents Article by Dianne Hook
Well the summer is here and so are the pesky bugs and flies and all things that sting you. How on earth do I keep them out of the house without the toxic fumes of the commercial bug sprays? Glad you asked, as I can point you in the right direction for an all natural insect repellent to keep the pesky things away. There are some great oils around that are natural insect repellents such as Basil, Lavender, Citronella, Lemongrass and Tea tree. You can make them up into a spray to use at home or apply while on your outdoor adventures. Insect Repellent Spray Recipe 100ml spray bottle 50ml cooled boiled water 25ml Witch hazel or Vodka 15 drops each of: Citronella Lavender Basil Lemongrass Tea Tree. Add all ingredients to the bottle, give it a good shake and spray around the room. The spray can also be sprayed on skin and clothing (avoiding eyes). Store in the fridge and discard after 4-6 weeks. Insect Bite Roller Blend Recipe 10ml roller bottle Fractionated coconut oil Lavender 6 drops Roman Chamomile 5 drops Frankincense 5 drops Basil 2 drops Tea Tree 2 drops Baby Blend Insect Bite Roller Recipe Lavender 3 drops in 10mls of fractionated coconut oil.
Directions: Add all ingredients to the roller bottle, shake well and roll over the bitten area up to 3 times a day. Natural Aromatherapy Sunburn After Sun Care Prevention is always better than cure, but if you do get caught out without your sun cream here are some fantastic recipes for soothing all natural after sun creams. Which is exactly what happened to me, in the full sun all day, without sun cream and a face like a tomato. The recipes below soothed my burns and saved me from looking like a tomato for too long. Soothing And Cooling Sunburn Recipe 100ml lotion bottle Coconut base lotion 2 drops each of: Peppermint German Chamomile Helichrysum After Sun Nourishing Cream Recipe 100ml lotion bottle Coconut base lotion 2 drops each of: Lavender Geranium Frankincense Directions: Add the cream to the lotion bottle then add the essential oils and shake to mix well. Apply to affected area up to three times a day. When stored in a blue, green, or amber bottle this cream will last 12 months. If stored in a clear bottle the essential oil will degrade quicker and be less effective. If you want to learn more about how essential oils can assist you in your health and wellbeing then take a look at my Facebook page @oilytherapies.

New Trim Trail Equipment At Oakley Road Playing Fields Article by Brenda Snape
The installation of the Trim Trail equipment on Oakley Road Playing Fields was carried out last week and the advisory signs on how to use the equipment are temporary at the moment, however, permanent ones, are due to replace them shortly. The cost of the entire project £19,087.50 by a company called Lemon Jelly Leisure. It is constructed from steel, with a total of eleven items (plyometric boxes, trapeze rings, monkey bars, sit-up bench, balance beam, pull-ups, incline ladder, parallel bars, human flag, cross trainer and chain bridge) for use by youth and adults. The Projects Subcommittee had been considering a trim trail for sometime and it finally came into fruition this summer. On Oakley Playing Fields there is now this trim trail equipment, plus the BMX Track, Skatepark, Parkour, Zip Wire, Multi-Sports Game Area, as well as children and toddler play. A majority of the time, this area is a hive of recreational activity and is, also a popular route for dog walkers too, which is due to the close proximity of the surrounding countryside.

St. Botolph’s Church, Shepshed And St. James’ Church, Oaks In Charnwood PHOTO: Lion President Bill Holland hands over a cheque for £350 to Musical Director David Newman and members of Hathern Training Band
It Is Easier Than You Think To Make A Difference To The Life Of A Child In Care Article by Kam Doll
Barnardo’s are looking for volunteer befrienders called Independent Visitors (IV) to spend a few hours each month with a child or young person who is looked after by the local authority. IVs make a real difference by spending quality time with a child or young person to share a hobby, sport, or interest. It is the little things that the IV does with their young person that makes the biggest impact by building confidence and resilience; it can be as simple as a kick about or a picnic in the park. Barnardo’s offers volunteers thorough training to prepare them for the role they are taking on including classroom induction and safeguarding training days. All volunteers are assigned a support worker to provide ongoing support and guidance and the service reimburses volunteer’s out of pocket expenses and mileage. Independent Visitors are ordinary people making an extraordinary contribution to the lives of others. If you would like to find out more please call 02476 372596 or email: coventry&warwickshirecrs@ barnardos.org.uk
Lions Support Hathern Training Band Article by Ann Bodycote
Continuing with their policy of supporting local charities, Shepshed Lions have contributed £350 to Hathern Training Band. Lion President Bill Holland went along to a recent practice night and handed the cheque over to Musical Director David Newman, who said, "Hathern Band is very active in the local community, but there are inevitably costs to be met for uniforms, transport, premises, and instruments. This donation from the Lions will be of great help in supporting our younger players in the Training Band, whose members range from 6 to 14 years of age." Lion President Bill said, "To be honest I was surprised and impressed to come to the practice session and see how many youngsters are here. I knew Hathern Band has a strong following in the area, but when you see the young players together, with more being trained next door, it really comes home to you how much good work is going on here. It is great to be able to support them, and hopefully Shepshed Carnival on August Bank Holiday Monday will help the Lions raise even more money for good causes like this."

£10,000 Raised For Hope Against Cancer In English Channel Challenge Article by Georgia Banton
At 6am on the 12th of July, Mr Christopher Trethewey embarked on a challenge which would see him eventually swim 21 successful miles across the English Channel raising an astonishing £10,000 for Leicestershire based charity, Hope Against Cancer. Christopher currently works alongside the Hope Against Cancer Facility Trials Facility, which offers cancer patients the opportunity to take part in research trials to develop new cancer treatments. The main project he has currently been working on is to create better ways of monitoring lymphoma patients, something of which the Clinical Trails Facility specialise in. The route of this swim started South West of Dover at Shakespeare’s Cliff and came to an end at Cap Griz Nez in the South West of Calais. Before this challenge, there were many precautions that Christopher needed to put in place, such as sustaining up to 8,000 calories a day to maintain metabolic temperature and combatting hypothermia in the 15-16C waters. Other obstacles could have included an exposure to jellyfish stings, cramps and the tides which could have affected the success of the swim. During swimming, he had the watchful eye of Eddie Spelling, from The Channel Swimming and Piloting Federation who piloted the boat which accompanied Chris’s swim. The success didn’t come without hard work and determination. For the last year Christopher has been training, which included swimming lengths of 15,000m and spending time in the cold-water at the Stoney Cove Diving Centre in Leicester. Before even attempting to cross the channel, the CSA (Channel Swimming Association) has to be satisfied that you can complete a 6-hour swim in similar temperatures to that of the English Channel. When asked why he chose to fundraise for Hope Against Cancer he said: “My motivation comes from the patients I see every day at the Clinical Trials Facility and the Leicester Royal Infirmary Haematooncology Unit. I have befriended wonderful people who have succumbed to this nondiscriminatory disease that is cancer. This swim has been a mere speck compared to what these people have to manage. The swim was by far one of the most challenging things I have ever done but reaching the end line was an amazing feeling. I am proud of what I have achieved and how much money I’ve been able to raise to help this fantastic charity. I’d do it all again if I could!” Nigel Rose, who is the Chief Executive at Hope Against Cancer has commended Mr Trethewey by saying: “The effort and bravery that Chris has shown both in the long build-up and during this challenge makes everyone at Hope incredibly proud. Not only does he work towards improving treatments for cancer, he has now raised money to help that research continue. We would like to say a huge thank you to all of those who have supported Chis and donated to this cause.” To find more information on Hope Against Cancer, you can visit: www.hopeagainstcancer.org.uk

Jennifer Thomas, development manager for FSB said: “There are some great initiatives happening across the Leicestershire and Rutland which really help to level the playing field for smaller firms, and this support is vital to our local small businesses – we thank all of these authorities for their work on these projects.” As well as offering free advice and support, the project includes the delivery of a food safety course which gives new business owners the opportunity to achieve a Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering and offers people the opportunity to learn the basics of food hygiene. People who attend the course learn about legislation, food safety hazards, temperature control, food handling and principles of safe food storage. The next dates for the food safety course are October 24 and January 23, 2020. For further information please contact a member of the food safety team on 01509 634656 or visit www.charnwood. gov.uk/foodsafety
A breast cancer survivor has raised nearly £700 for the charity which helped her regain physical fitness and confidence after treatment. Janet Harding set herself the personal challenge of walking part of an ancient Spanish pilgrimage route, the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, in May. But when generous friends and family heard about her plan, they asked if they could sponsor her and she decided to set up a JustGiving page for Supporting Confidence Through Exercise (SCTE). The Measham-based charity runs In the Pink, a Pilates-based gentle exercise programme which helps with physical and emotional rehabilitation after breast cancer treatment. The pioneering course is one of the only ones of its kind in the UK. Janet, 64, was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ – or precancerous cells - in November 2017 following a routine mammogram. She was told by consultants that she needed a full mastectomy. The news came as a bombshell as she had taken retirement from her job as a part-time accountant only weeks earlier and was looking forward to spending time with her new baby granddaughter. “It was a tough few months and everything happened quickly. I tried to stay positive and just be grateful that I didn’t have to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy. I had a surgical reconstruction using muscles from my back. What I wasn’t prepared for was that after that, I found some day-to-day things, like mopping the floor and hoovering difficult, because I was very stiff. Before treatment, I went a Pilates class, but afterwards I felt I couldn’t go back. I was very self-conscious because my body and my abilities had changed. By chance I heard about In the Pink and it was a gift from heaven. I went along every week for eight weeks. It’s even given me the confidence to go back to my old Pilates class.” The Camino de Santiago, or Way of Saint James, is an ancient pilgrim route across northern Spain to the Cathedral where the remains of Saint James are enshrined. Janet, who lives near Market Bosworth, walked 115k from Sarria to Santiago in eight days. “For me, the walk started off as a personal challenge. After all the surgery over the last 18 months, I had no idea if I had the stamina or the will to keep going day after day. Now I know I can achieve more than I expect to, I know that I am stronger than I believe, and I know that exercise really has given me the confidence to fight back and to look forward to the future.” The next In the Pink programme starts on Tuesday, September 24 at Ashby Road Sports Club in Hinckley. Each course is free, runs for eight weeks and takes a maximum of ten participants. Michelle Scott-Worthington, SCTE’s programme coordinator, said: “We can’t thank Janet enough for fundraising for us. Stories like hers make everything we do worthwhile. We are passionate about making sure that every In the Pink programme is free, so that we are accessible and open to all breast cancer survivors – and donations like this make that possible.” Find out more about SCTE and In the Pink at scte-activities.org.uk or call them on 0300 365 9791.

Cllr Keith Harris
T: 01509 557701 E: cllr.keith.harris@charnwood.gov.uk Hathern is gearing up to the biggest event of the Hathern Together year, the 8th Wicked Hathern Fest on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th August. It is likely to be the biggest yet with Noughties hitmakers The Feeling headlining on the Saturday. On Friday evening there will be 2 stages with 11 acts. On Saturday the main stage will be added with Whiskey Rebellion and the Zufflers. Shepshed band Rawkus Redz will return with some new material, so come down to give George and his bandmates some support. There will be comedy acts as well. As this is a family event, the free FAMILY ARENA for kids is back with games, bouncy castles and activities in their own marquee with Liss Jones doing a tribute to Ariana Grande. The ADVENTURE ARENA is bigger and better with crazy golf, nerf battles, laser quest and more. Many street food vendors will be serving up Jamaican, Italian and other cuisines. The bar will be serving ciders and local beers and there will be a wine and prosecco bar. The organisers are keen to recycle as much as possible. There will be signs indicating where to put various types of waste. I am arranging for Serco to collect the rubbish. We are asking everyone to follow the signs to put waste in the correct containers to avoid contamination. Please don’t put food waste in the recycling bins. The organisers want to move towards cutting out single use plastic cups but not this year. Please take your cups back when you order that second or fifth pint! Can you spare a bit of time on Sunday 11th to help clear up after the event? Please remember that this is entirely run by volunteers. Even a couple of hours would be greatly appreciated. There will be a kilometre of fencing to dismantle, 3 marquees to take down and much more. The Hathern Village Association who run the fest have tried to get a grant from the borough council to buy a new marquee as the present one is creaking a bit with age. The grant officers are aware of public perception and rejected the bid partly because the festival gives the impression of being commercial. It is a victim of its own success! They fear that residents might wonder why they are giving public money to such an apparently commercial venture. We need to spread the word that this is a community event, the profits of which are ploughed back into community groups. The HVA are going to try another bid in September. You could add your voice to reassure the officers that you are aware of this and think that it would be fine to give money to invest in a new marquee. When the old one is clapped out, the event would no longer take place. Hathern Community Library (the best in the county!) is running the Summer Reading Challenge for children. Read 6 books over the summer holidays and get stickers, prizes and a certificate. There is a promotion of the Challenge at the library on August 15th from 10.30 to noon. The following Thursday sees a free bat walk led by local bat experts with electronic bat detectors. It will cover 2.5 kilometers and a stile needs to be surmounted on the way. It will start at dusk. Only people over 8 can attend and 8-14 year olds must be accompanied. On Bank Holiday Monday the Normanton Chain Ferry will be ferrying people over to the other side where you can relax with a drink at the riverside Plough Inn. Meet at the Cross at 11 am. The trip is £1 each way. While you sip your pint, you can hear a talk about the history of the Ferry at the Plough at 12.30. There is an amazing number of organisations in so small a village to get involved in - a football club, a cricket club, Bellringers, the Band, Garden Club, Wildlife Group, The WI, Village Voices (a singing group), History Society, Dance Group. Many organisations need volunteers or you can just turn up and enjoy an activity. Contact details for all these are in the brochure you received last month. I have been trying very hard over the last 8 months to drive Daisy bank Park to completion and adoption by the parish council. I have visited the site with Cara Wild from CBC and the parish chair, Roy Dann. The developer has now completed all the work to make the park safe for use. They left the planting of trees very late and some of the second planting have died. They still have to complete the replacement of trees but this can’t take place until the planting season begins again later in the year. They also have to replace many shrubs and clear weeds in the meadow. But at least the park is open and safe for the summer. I will be monitoring the situation with Cara and contacting William Davis in the autumn to ensure that they do the work in good time and that the parish can then adopt the whole area and take over the maintenance. You will all soon be receiving a card through your doors with contact details for me and my fellow councillor, Emma Ward. Please keep this handy so that if you have any issues, you can contact us. You can also turn up at the parish council meetings at the Village Hall to voice any concerns. The next meeting is on 23rd September at 7.30pm.

MP Nicky Morgan T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk
I’ve been contacted by Shepshed residents about the works planned for the A512 and Junction 23 of the M1. In particular, there is a view that stopping traffic turning left from Iveshead Road on to the Ashby Road is likely to increase traffic at the already dangerous Charley crossroads. This is a view I share, and I recently met Cllr Christine Radford to view the plans and to discuss this. Christine has been in touch with Highways at County Hall to explain the objections to this proposal. I’ve also contacted those running the consultation to explain why this suggestion needs to be re-visited. It was a pleasure to attend the recent service at Christchurch Methodist Church in Shepshed for the farewell service for two local Methodist Ministers – Jonathan Gichaara and David Owen. Both have provided great leadership and will be missed. In particular, those in the church spoke very warmly about Jonathan’s pastoral work. I wish them both well in their futures. A couple of weeks ago I had an invitation to visit the new Persimmon development on Hathern Road. One of the most contentious areas in new developments both locally and nationally is that often the open spaces are not being adopted for future maintenance by the local council but will instead by run by a management company that charges a fee to residents. This is an issue I’ve been pursuing in Westminster and will continue to do so. Much to my surprise the new Prime Minister offered me a role in his Cabinet, as the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports. This is an extremely interesting and diverse role and touches on issues of real importance to our lives - the role that technology has in driving economic growth, the dangers and opportunities of the online world and how it could be regulated, the importance of art, culture, music, theatre, sport and so much else in enriching our lives, the development of youth policy outside schools and how we tackle loneliness.

Cllr Christine Radford T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges onto the highways/ footpaths, social services etc. Charley Road Cross Roads Following the meeting with officers from County and Cllrs from both Charley and Shepshed, officers have given a report of the proposals for this X roads. 1. Make additional signing improvements by adding Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) to both Charley Road approaches to the junction, replacing the existing VAS on Iveshead Road and Abbey Road approaches with a sign that shows the bend ahead as well as crossroads, add additional standard bend warning and give way signing at the junction. 2. Refresh all carriageway markings at and on approach to the junction and add edge markings and centre line markings where necessary. 3. Remove vegetation to enhance visibility of all signs, repair or replace damaged or missing signs and verge market posts. At the time of writing this report existing signs and posts are being repaired. Vegetation removal will take place from following the nesting season. 4. Undertake an assessment to see if any Vehicle Restraint System (VRS) crash barrier is required to prevent vehicles leaving the carriageway in the vicinity of the junction. 5. Undertake skid resistance testing of the carriageway surface on all approaches to the junction to see if any carriageway surface treatment is required to provide additional traction for vehicles in the vicinity of the junction. Other suggested solutions such as Stop signs, Traffic Signals and a Roundabout do not meet the guidelines permitted by the Department for Transport (DfT). Other suggestions such as Road Alignment, Staggered junction, changing the priorities were also discussed at this meeting, but were considered not appropriate by the officers. Following this meeting the works 1-5 have already been ordered. County have agreed to continue to monitor the crossroads to assess the effectiveness of the new measures and to identify any other practical measurers if required in the future. As will both myself and the Cllrs from Charley and Shepshed Town Councils.
A512/Ashby Road/Charnwood Road/Leicester Road Improvements I must thank everybody who attended the exhibition on 2nd July and signing the petitions. I had a meeting with Nicky Morgan MP showing her the plans and explaining my concerns and the concerns of the residents. She said she would write in, in support. There is a rumour going around Facebook that the proposal to remove the NO left hand turn from Iveshead road into Ashby Road is not now going ahead. This has still to be considered at officer level at County. I submitted the petition the last week of July and will keep you all informed. Both myself and residents who live on the south side of Ashby Road could not understand the logic of this proposal. It will mean that residents who live in that area, if they wanted to go to Coalville or Ashby would have had to use the Charley Road X roads, which we all know is not the best route to take. It does pay to protest as officers at County are reconsidering this proposal. The road works should have started 29th July and regular reports should be being issued to keep the public up to date with what is happening from the main contractors Morgan Sindall. I am not sure how this information will be published; I will try to keep you informed when I can. If you wish to comment on the proposed alteration on the A512 the details are AMP@leics.gov. uk (Asset and Major Programs) or to view the plans go to www. leicestershire.gov.uk/m1j23 under supporting documents. Have Your Say Since 2010 County have saved £200m but increasing demand for services, plus uncertainty over Government funding, means that County needs to save another £75m over the next four years. Residents are urged to have their say by completing a short questionnaire. The consultation runs until 8th September. Your views are important and County encourages you to have your say. The questionnaire, supporting information and the interactive

To have your say go to www.leicestershire.gov.uk/ haveyoursay/wastesitechanges or email waste.project@leics.gov.uk or phone 0116 305 0001 consultation finishes 23rd September. Police During the month long Summer Drink Drug drive campaign and up to the third weekend of the campaign Leicestershire Police had made 63 drink and 8 drug drive arrests, this is considerably more than on the same day in June 2018 when there had been 34 drink and 6 drug arrests: • 44 of the arrests have been in the Leicester conurbation (38 drink/7 drug) along with clusters in County districts, Charnwood (8 drink) NWLC (5 drink/ 2 drug) and Hinckley and Bosworth (6 drink) • 18 of the arrests have been made following an RTC • 14 involved a driver aged 24 or under • 60 of those arrested have been male • One of the highest roadside breath tests has been 124, over three and a half times the legal limit Action Fraud Firms Overcharging For Services Leicestershire Trading Standards is warning about firms overcharging for services which can be applied for directly. These firms generally operate online and are known as copycat websites, they often charge for a service you can get for free or at a much lower cost on the genuine site. Sometimes they take an exorbitant cut of a refund, but this detail is hidden in small print and you only realise when it is too late. Examples are European Health Insurance Cards, tax refunds, passports, visas and driving licences. All can be accessed legitimately through www.gov.uk Report a copycat website to Trading Standards or for consumer advice contact Citizens Advice on 03454 040506. Beware Of Phone Calls Leicestershire Trading Standards are warning residents to be aware of phone calls advising Council Tax refunds and requesting bank card details to be able to process the refund. This is then followed up by another call claiming to be from the bank’s fraud department, advising them to move money into a ‘safe’ account. Both of these calls are scams. Remember, a genuine organisation will never ask you for security details such as your PIN
or password. Banks will never ask you to move money to another account. If you are not 100% sure who you are talking to DON’T give out ANY personal or financial information, even if you are told you have been a victim of fraud or a scam. Sign up to Telephone Preference Service (0345 070 0707) to stop unwanted telephone calls, and contact your phone provider who may also offer a call blocking service to stop unwanted calls. Drivers Targeted With Fake Fines Action Fraud have received an increase in reports and intelligence where elderly victims are being targeted by individuals purporting to be police officers or traffic wardens. The victims are being approached whilst parked in a car park and are told by the suspect that they have parked illegally or broken a speed limit and a photo has been taken of their car for ‘evidence’. Victims are advised that they will face a substantial penalty fine unless they pay a smaller upfront fee immediately. Victims who opt for paying the smaller penalty will be directed to a parking meter and asked to enter their card and PIN. The parking meters have been tampered with by the suspect in order to retain the card. Once the victim inserts their card and are asked for their PIN the victims are shoulder surfed for their PIN by the suspect. Once victims input their PIN, the card is retained by the machine and victims are told by the suspect to seek help from the company who operates the parking meter or their bank. What you need to do • If you are suspicious about the authenticity of the fine, do not pay it until you have verified it with your local council. • Always shield your PIN from view when using an ATM machine, and never share your PIN with anyone. • If your bank card is retained by an ATM machine, contact your bank immediately to inform them. Your Help Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such as overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess, inconsiderate parking (on pavements, yellow lines, outside of schools) etc., without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. The master plan can be viewed on www.nwleics.gov.uk/moneyhill. Before the District Council formally considers and agrees the Masterplan it is inviting comments on it. Please send any comment to planning.policy@nwleicestershire.gov.uk or 01530 454 676 Planning Application Submitted For Outwoods Visitor Centre The former ranger’s cottage at the Outwoods has been empty for a number of years and it is intended the visitor centre would include a café, toilets and space for displays. It would also be adapted to encourage bats to roost there through the inclusion of lead bat access points and flying space. The application will go through the usual planning process which will include the opportunity for people to have a say. The centre will cost around £130,000 to create and it is expected a private operator will manage it. If the application is granted, work will start later this year with the aim of the centre opening next year. The responsibility of the Outwoods lies with the Outwoods Management Committee which is a separate body to the Council. However, Charnwood effectively maintains the Outwoods working alongside the committee. The Outwoods is 110 acres of ancient woodland to the south of Loughborough and is one of the oldest surviving woodland sites in Charnwood. It is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) by Natural England, which means it is protected by law to conserve its wildlife and geology. Dog Dirt - Iveshead Lane Cllr Radford has been trying to get a litter/dog bin at the entrance to
28 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news
Iveshead Lane, which is situated just off Iveshead Road next to the mini roundabout following concerns raised by residents who walk their dogs down this lane from the new housing development. Charnwood are saying it is not needed and that have had no complaints. Can I ask residents to contact Charnwood on cleaner.greener@charnwood.gov.uk saying you are concerned about the amount of dog dirt and dog bags left down the lane especially in the trees, bushes and branches. The manager of the Jolly Farmers public house has even offered to sponsor the bin, but this still has not proved positive. Just a reminder to dog owners it is an offence to let your dog foul the pavement without clearer up after them. You could face a fine of £1,000. Bandstand Closed For Repairs The bandstand in the heart of Queen’s Park in Loughborough is undergoing some maintenance work and is currently closed. The bandstand has been in the park since 1902. Charnwood Borough Council discovered an issue with the floor during a routine check and repairs are needed. This will be carried out as soon as possible. The bandstand plays host to a series of concerts through the summer which the Council says will continue. Around 50 tonnes of waste was collected from student areas. Large electrical items including fridge freezers, washing machines and televisions were collected and recycled. The Council teamed up with the British Heart Foundation (BHF) for a third year to join its Pack for Good campaign which encourages students to recycle unwanted clothes, books, electrical items and more at BHF recycling banks. The items are then sold in BHF shops, to raise money for the charity. Last year the campaign raised £30,632 for the charity. Charnwood To Play A Vital Role In Saving The UK’s Wildlife Article by Rita Gries
Over the next six years local and national specialists will be working in Charnwood to make sure the borough’s parks and green spaces will become important havens for wildlife as well as being the best places to visit, relax and pass the time. Award-winning landscape specialists idverde and the UK’s largest conservation charity the RSPB will be working together with Charnwood Borough Council to help wildlife find a home and raise young across the borough. Across the UK nature is in crisis; over half of the UK’s wildlife and plants are in decline and more than one in ten are being pushed towards extinction. Which means Loughborough and places like Charnwood Forest become more important. With four Local Nature Reserves, over 200 Local Wildlife Sites and 17 Sites of Special Scientific Interest in the Borough, the new partnership can make a real difference in helping our natural world recover so future generations can enjoy simple pleasures like birdsong and the much-loved blooming bluebells displays in the Outwoods. To make the partnership a success local volunteers and community groups will play a key role in creating and caring for the area’s special places. And an important element of the work will be making sure everyone can discover the wildlife living in their neighbourhood, and why Charnwood is helping to save nature. Cllr Leigh Harper-Davies, Charnwood Borough Council’s lead member for major contracts said: “We’re looking forward to working with the RSPB and our green spaces partner idverde to deliver more wildlife friendly initiatives in the borough. Not only will it enhance what our parks and open spaces has to offer to the local wildlife but it will also help residents discover the wildlife on their doorstep. I’d like to thank our partners idverde for choosing to bring their partnership with the RSPB to Charnwood and look forward to seeing how the project progresses.”
Michael Copleston at the RSPB said: “No one wants to live in an area where birdsong has been pushed out and our wildlife is not welcome. And yet, our wildlife is vanishing, and the UK’s nature is in crisis. Areas like Charnwood are becoming increasingly important for plants and wildlife, and this partnership will bring together a range of experts to work with local volunteers to ensure future generation will continue to enjoy the parks and green spaces where they live. So, it is really exciting that we will be working alongside idverde and Charnwood Borough Council to not only help wildlife thrive but also give people the tools they need so they can play their part too.” Sarah Hughes-Clarke, idverde Director leading on Biodiversity, said: “We’re very proud of the work our dedicated colleagues do at Charnwood to help our local authority client keep their parks and countryside welcoming for nature and for people. That’s why when the opportunity arose for us to partner with RSPB to provide a Community and Nature advisor, Charnwood was the perfect location. The passion of Charnwood’s residents for their green spaces is just incredible, so we know this project will get off to a great start, and we’ll be supporting Charnwood’s communities along the way.” The partnership will see a dedicated member of the RSPB team based in Charnwood to work with idverde and local people.
