Shepshed Lions Club are part of a worldwide charitable organisation and during the year we raise money through various events, one of the main ones being the annual Carnival which will be held on Bank Holiday Monday 26th August. Every penny we raise goes to charity. We especially aim to support Shepshed good causes, but sometimes the most deserving cases aren’t brought to our attention. Maybe you are aware of an individual who would benefit from funding, or perhaps you know of a local club or group who need help. If you do, please email us at shepshedlionsclub@hotmail. com giving as much detail as possible and Shepshed Lions will consider your request. We look forward to hearing from you.

Ring Fence Your Assets
The Probus Club Article by Horace Lister
Article by Klara Hesling
Everybody wants to protect their assets for the benefit of their family and loved ones. We are all motivated to provide for our children throughout their lives and want what is best for them. Many people will think about or draft a Will hoping to ensure that the assets that they have worked hard for, are passed on to their children and chosen beneficiaries after their death. However, a Will can only dispose of the assets that you own at the date of your death and if the value of these have decreased during your lifetime, there will be little if anything left for your beneficiaries to inherit. Property Protection Trusts (Life Interest Trusts) can only be created while both partners are alive. Normally with couples the property is divided 50/50, though these percentages can be different. Upon the first death, their share of the property is placed into the Trust to be administered by the Trustee. The Will also specifies who is to be the ultimate beneficiary and this would normally be the surviving children of the deceased. The deceased’s share in the property is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so even if the surviving partner remarries or goes to a care home. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving the surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of the life. A clause can be added for the Trustees to have access to the capital at their discretion. There are also other Will Trusts available depending on your circumstances (i.e. Discretionary Trust Wills) Lifetime Living Trusts are specifically designed to protect your assets for you during your lifetime. Giving you the peace of mind that your estate can be passed on securely and intact to your loved ones, after your death. After your death, the Trust continues to work to protect your assets for your beneficiaries. The Trust can continue to hold the assets safely within it or pay them out to the specified beneficiaries. The Trust is extremely flexible after your death and has the potential to continue protecting your family for 125 years from the date it was created. That means that all the benefits described in this document can not only protect you and your children but can also protect your grandchildren and great-grandchildren. What are the main reasons for wanting to create a trust? • Your wishes to be specifically set out during your life • To prevent any claims on your estate under the Inheritance Act 1975 (Provision for Family and Dependants) • To reduce probate costs upon your death • To provide for beneficiaries who require assistance • To protect the trust assets from passing to future spouse or partner before/or after your death • To provide the trustees with means to manage the trust assets should you die or no longer live in property • To provide the trustees to rent property immediately after your death or if you no longer live in property • To provide the trustees with means to manage the trust assets should they lose mental capacity (although creating Lasting Powers of Attorney is essential) Our trained Consultants/Estate Planners can assess your situation, to book an appointment in the comfort of your own home, please contact Kornerstone Wealth Protection/ Legal Services on freephone 0800 193 7377.

The meeting was opened by the President, giving a warm welcome to the members, and also to our speaker Sandy Leong. Apologies for absence were read, in the names of Roger Haycock, Graheme Woodward, Albert Grimes, and Ben Burton. In the general business report, we were told that June Lee (wife of Del), had fallen, and broken her hip, which will put the onus of looking after Del, who is already suffering major disabilities onto others. The Probus magazine is still available from the Secretary. We were then treated to our monthly ration of hilarity by Stan White. Grace was then said by the President, before we all sat and ate Beef bourgignon, followed by apple crumble. After the hearty lunch, two lucky members received their just rewards from the raffle draw. Our Speaker for the day Sandy Leong the introduced her talk entitled "The Vikings". She explained that these Vikings were generally farmers from Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, who, after planting their crops in the Spring, and finding themselves with lots of time before the harvest, went looking for other forms of income. These Vikings were Pagans at the time when Christianity in Britain was in its infancy. They were brutal murderers in their quest for easy pickings, but contrary to common belief they did not have horns on their helmets but did come across initially in summer in their long boats when the North Sea was calm, and they were waiting for the crops to ripen. Their first incursion appears to have been around late 789 AD when they attacked and pillaged the undefended and very rich settlement of Lindisfarne, where all the riches of the area were kept, they were so successful in this attack, and so profitable that they could see a permanent income from this pillaging, when large amounts of riches were willingly given to the Vikings in exchange for peace. This successful means of obtaining goods was observed by the Danes, who also decided to have their share in 865 AD. These activities weren't restricted to the East Coast, as history shows that they were active in East and Western Scotland, and Norwegian Kings ruled larger parts of England and became settlers, even in Wales, but alas, the Viking rulers ended their 300years of terror and rule, when William The Conqueror came on the scene in 1066, and even he was probably a Viking descendant. The Speaker was thanked for giving such an interesting insight into that 300 year section of our history.

Passion Youth Project News Article by Vicky Gould
We continue to utilize the new kitchen offering food at our monthly food fundraiser. This month it was on the 10th June. We collectively raised £128, which goes a small way to the general upkeep of the project. It also allows the community to come together and join in good home cooked food. It also allows our young people to gain valuable life skills from communication to be able to wash up correctly. They are then able to transfer these either at home or in the search for paid employment. There are many people that help with the setting up of this event and the cooking of the food required, without their help the evening would not take place. Can I spread a heartfelt thanks to all that help and take the time to support this event. We also have a program of events that Passion runs within the drop in sessions. We have cooking and bingo once a month on Friday evenings. These are both very popular as the result is food. If there is anything different that we could offer please get in touch as we are always looking for other ideas. We continue to have around 30 children at every session. These vary in age from 11-18, with a growing number of new young people in the 11 year old age bracket. It is great to be able to provide a safe place for them to come and chat, annoy the volunteers with, what the young people call, music and, of course, drink tea and eat lots of biscuits! Chat and Chomp continues to be a great success. We have four young people attending this six week program. Working in pairs they are using recipes to enable them to make food of their choice. This again reinforces working with others and communication skills. This month it has included millionaire shortbread and a rainbow birthday cake for one of the young people. Then, as you can see from the photo, they did the tidying up which is just as important as the cooking in the learning process. We are always looking for volunteers to help at the fundraising events. Volunteers are always required when the drop in is closed. We require a cleaner, decorator, and help with marketing. These are all opportunities that don't require you to come into contact with the young people, although once you meet them you will wonder why you didn't do it years ago! Please prayerfully think about how you may be able to help. Meet Your Neighbours If you are an organisation that supports and helps the community of Shepshed, there will be an information event which will be held at Shepshed town council office on the 14th August 10am till 2pm. If you would like to hold a stall to advertise your hard work and services please get in touch with PCSO Kelly Davis on Kelly.davis@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk

Give Hayfever The Heave-Ho Article by Rebecca Alder
Bhangra-Inspired Fitness Class, Returns To Loughborough Article by Reema Bhakri
For many the warmer weather will come as a welcome relief, but if you suffer with hayfever - and one in five of us does - you may not want to hang up your hanky just yet. An allergic reaction such as hayfever can be best explained as an excessive reaction to a normally harmless substance. Avoid dairy foods as they cause mucus formation that can exacerbate hayfever symptoms, and keep your intake of refined sugar low. Do stock up on quercetin-rich foods. Found naturally in apples (with the skin on), red onions, capers and black tea, quercetin is welldocumented for its antihistamine activity. Luffa operculata taken twice daily two weeks before your usual symptoms begin can help with sneezing, blocked and runny noses. It is usually teamed with Galphimia glauca, which can be especially useful for reducing eye irritation. Pollinosan Hayfever Tablets from A.Vogel contain both and are non-drowsy so will not affect your ability to drive or use machinery. A nasal spray is also available for immediate relief. If your eyes are particularly sensitive, Euphrasia (in the form of eye drops) can help. Finally, stay one step ahead of your pollen-shaped foe by checking prevailing winds and pollen counts. For further advice, visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester.

Did you ever think you could get fit with a class that combines bhangra style dance moves with a series of fast paced compound exercises? Look no further! The latest Bhangra-inspired fitness class, Bhangrablaze , that has taken the Midlands by storm in Derby, Birmingham, Wolverhampton has now recently opened in Loughborough, giving participants a taste of traditional Bhangra routines and combining it with powerful exercises into an hour-long calorie-burning session. Accompanied to the beat of the latest bhangra music featuring an instrument known as the dhol, a traditional Indian drum, this exercise class will have participants leaving with more energy, positivity and most of all, blaze away calories without even noticing it. BhangraBlaze was founded in 2015 by Leicester resident Kirit Thakore and has quickly grown into a fitness trend on a national scale. Unlike other Bhangra classes BhangraBlaze is not a dance class but uses easy to follow ballistic movements, meaning that no prior dance experience is needed. With more than 20 years’ experience in the fitness industry, delivering sessions in martial arts, insanity, boxing, circuits, weights and high intensity interval training, Kirit has taught over x instructors who deliver Bhangrablaze classes across the UK. Reema Bhakri, Bhangrablaze Loughborough Instructor said “I have always loved Bhangra since I was a child and my love for it somehow got lost on the way as ‘normal ‘ life took over. Now almost 20 years later, married and with five beautiful children, I have rekindled my passion and truly feel amazing.” She continued, “By following the Bhangrablaze principles, I would love to get others to rekindle their own passion whatever that may be, be more confident, energised and happier with themselves. It is very important in this current mental health climate." “You have to be happier inside as well as on the outside” Reema runs her Bhangra Blaze classes on a Thursday at Charnwood College at 7pm. She also runs classes in Whitwick and Coalville and will soon be running more sessions in neighbouring towns. For more details contact reema.bhakri@bhangrablaze.com or @ getfitbhangrastyle.

Shepshed Slimmer Is Set To Share Her Slimming Secrets Article by Claire-Louise Wilson
A slimmer who transformed her life by losing five stone is using her success to shape a whole new career helping other people change their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams too. Claire-Louise Wilson joined a local Slimming World group two years ago feeling physically unfit, emotionally broken and lacking confidence has dropped five dress sizes, but has gained her confidence, energy and a positive outlook on life. Now that she has trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s largest group-based weight loss organisation, members at the Shepshed Wednesday evening group are getting ready to welcome her as their new Consultant when she takes over the group on 24th July.
Steps Sponsored Toddle Article by Janet Russell
A few hours of sunshine was all that was needed for Steps’ latest fundraising event to take place on Saturday 15th June. Despite a week of heavy rain, it was decided not to postpone the event, to keep fingers crossed and to go for it! Steps is a charity which provides a free service for children with chromosome conditions that affect movement, such as Down’s syndrome and cerebral palsy. It was decided to provide an opportunity for the Steps children to take part in a sponsored event so a short course was identified which could be completed by whatever means were appropriate. The patron of Steps, Rosemary Conley, explained, “We wanted to give all of our children the chance to participate so some were in wheelchairs, some were carried and others toddled! We also wanted to involve the local community and children from our neighbouring St. Botolph’s School were invited to take part. It was lovely to welcome them and their families.” Catering at the lunchtime event was provided by Rapid Relief, a national charity that feeds homeless people, goes to disaster areas such as Grenfell Towers and supports local charity events. Team leader for the Loughborough branch, Mervyn Burke, said, “We love getting involved with charities such as Steps and want to help support community events such as this one. We will be returning to Steps to provide the catering for their end of year barbecue next month.” Also at the “Toddle” was a tombola stall with many prizes kindly donated by local people, together with Ashby and Shepshed Tesco stores. There was a cake stall and a ‘Steps Sale Shop’ where you could buy anything from a notebook to a pair of shoes! The proceeds to date have reached almost £700. Janet Russell, the centre manager for Steps told us, “We still have more sponsor money to come in so we should be able to reach £1,000. This is an amazing achievement when you consider the extreme weather which we’ve been having. Regular readers will know that we have to raise £250,000 every year to run our service which caters for children from at least five counties. We should like to thank the following for their help and support. Rapid Relief, Ashby Hastings Scouts, St. Botolph’s school, family members and local people, those who donated gifts, food and drinks and everyone who made a donation.” To find out more about Steps please go to www.stepscentre.org.uk

The latest government figures reveal that around one in four adults are obese and it is estimated that, by 2034, this will increase to one in three. 62% of Leicestershire’s population is now overweight or obese. Claire-Louise says: "Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight. After losing five stone and completing my training, it’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to target."
After
"Support is really the most important thing. I couldn’t have lost five stone without the weekly help, encouragement, tips and understanding of my own Consultant and group. As someone who has lost weight myself, I know the challenges people can face, which is why, along with the group, I will be there to support every one of my members all the way to their chosen target weight. As a Consultant it’s my role to create that warm, supportive atmosphere to get people sharing their ideas and experiences to help others - it’s going to be great fun!" "Like a lot of slimmer’s, I had tried to lose weight so many times before by following numerous diets, but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate. I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life especially when I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet and I shed the weight despite of the PCOS. The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of tasty, filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry, and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. As a family we still enjoy all the family favourites and the takeaways we used to indulge in have been replaced with tasty homemade versions. I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself." Claire-Louise’s Slimming World group will be held at Christchurch Methodist Church, Shepshed every Wednesday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm from 24th July. For more information or to join Claire-Louise’s group either pop along on 24th July or call her on 07488243173. Or: For more information visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk or call 0344 897 8000.

Shepshed Special Community Bus Is Looking For Volunteers We Need Drivers And Escorts
Sabatino & Sutcliffe 1 June 2019 - What A Fab Night! st
Article by Alison Sharp
What can I say, where do I start? What a fab night, Shepshed Special Community Bus held a fundraising event at Iveshead School Theatre, we sold 213 tickets, a full house! We are currently raising funds for a new Community Bus, which is a lifeline to so many people who without it would be unable to get out and about and this causes isolation, depression and loneliness. We are able to take people shopping, lunch clubs, outings to different places, assisting many people that find it difficult to use public transport or have difficulty getting into cars etc. Our vehicles are wheelchair adapted and have easy access which enables people to get on and off easily, a lot of our journeys are escort assisted, this gives people confidence when they find it difficult to leave home alone. All our journeys are door to door and there is always someone to assist the passengers to help their journey be a comfortable one. Sabatino & Sutcliffe sang the songs of Michael Ball & Alfie Boe and surprised everyone with a special guest, the very talented Brigitta Bognàr who played the violin so beautifully. She played a couple of songs with Sabatino & Sutcliffe and then a beautiful solo. Brigitta is a Hungarian born solo and orchestra violinist, now based in the UK, she began violin studies at the age of 8 and completed her degrees at the Music University of Szeged. She was then the lead violin at the Katona Jozsef Theatre of Kecskemet for 14 years. At the same time, she was performing many productions and concerts as lead violin in Budapest, performances included Chess, Fiddle on the roof, The dance of the Vampires. She has also played at many of the UK’s major concert halls including the Birmingham Symphony Hall, The Royal Opera House Jersey and Concert Hall Glasgow, as lead violin with the St Petersburg Classic Ballet and the Moscow City Ballet during their tours of the U.K. She plays all genres of music from classical through to modern popular music. Brigitta said “It was an honour to be part of this wonderful evening and to do something good for the Community”. Myself and the Management Committee would like to say a big thank you to Brigitta for donating some of her busy schedule to share her amazing talent with us all. Luke Sabatino & Kieran Sutcliffe were absolutely amazing, they are so talented and

authentic. The show consists of songs ranging from the best-selling albums of Michael Ball & Alfie Boe. Luke & Kieran are two of the best showman and vocalists in the U.K they take their audience on a Musical journey no one would want to miss. The show has been creatively put together as a unique style to Michael Ball & Alfie Boe, with songs from Les Miserable, The Phantom Of The Opera, Blood Brothers & Carousel to name a few. Luke & Kieran’s ability allows them to express their passion for the Theatre through their magical vocal talent and song choice. The audience thoroughly enjoyed it, standing ovations, sounds of more, whistling and cheering throughout the theatre. Here is some of the quotes from the audience. “Had a fabulous night the show was amazing, enjoyed every minute” “It was brilliant! Really enjoyed it fabulous voices” “They are absolutely fantastic their show should be in the west end, their voices are powerful, clear, in pitch at all times, perfect” “A fantastic show really enjoyed every minute. The songs they did were fabulous and I couldn’t believe we were in a little theatre, it was like being in the West End, can’t wait to see you guys again” “Amazing violinist, you made that violin talk” Here are a few words from Sabatino & Sutcliffe. "Hey guys just want to say what a wonderful night we had last night at the Iveshead Theatre, a full house and such a wonderful audience overwhelmed by all the beautiful comments off you all and support humbled by the standing ovations too! We want to say a big thank you to Alison Sharp for inviting us back for a second year and everyone behind the scenes who helped her. Hopefully, we have raised another great amount for the community bus. We’d also like to thank Neil, Charlie & Zoe for controlling all sound and lights amazing job. Finally a big thank you to our guest star Brigitta Bognár for accompanying us and performing a wonderful solo to the beautiful phantom sequel Love Never Dies! So grateful for the support" I would personally like to thank Sabatino & Sutcliffe, Brigitta, the Shepshed Community, the Management/Fundraising Committee, all that helped behind the scenes to make this a memorable evening. Well done to you all, can’t wait to do it all again in 2020.

Loughborough Cycling Club Gets In The Saddle For Charity Article by Sarah Ross
A group of 12 cyclists from Loughborough will take on a major twowheeled challenge in the name of charity by cycling 900 miles from Lands’ End to John O’Groats. The Chainsnappers Cycling Club will set off on the 12th July and aim to complete the challenge in nine days by tackling a mammoth 100 miles per day. The group have so far raised over £5,000 in generous sponsorship to split between the Cystic Fibrosis ward at Leicester's Glenfield Hospital, Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice LOROS and Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis. The club was formed in 2011 by a number of local cycling enthusiasts, including Andrew Steel, Alex Keeshan and Robert Powell, who all have very personal reasons for riding. Andrew Steel, Ecommerce Director at Charles Bentley & Son, comments: “I'm raising much needed funds to support the Cystic Fibrosis ward at Leicester's Glenfield Hospital, as it supported a very dear friend, Laura Piertryx, for many years. Sadly, Laura died in March this year, aged just 38. The ward who supported her treatment continues to offer essential care for this terrible and incurable disease, so I want to raise money towards the vital day-to-day care. I’ve ridden over 2,000 miles since January, with a few 100-mile rides already in the legs. However, this is the toughest physical and mental challenge I have ever taken on and, if I’m honest, the thought of the challenge ahead fills me with fear.” Alex Keeshan comments: “I first mentioned the idea of cycling to Lands’ End to John O' Groats to my cycling friends last year and since then the enthusiasm for this trip has grown. My father was an active man in his early 70s when he was first diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, an incurable condition causing progressive scarring of the lungs and a life span of only three to four years after diagnosis. This is an unsupported trip requiring us to carry all of our equipment and clothes and is a real challenge. The more we can raise towards helping to find a cure for this devastating disease will make it all worthwhile.” Robert Powell comments: “My mother Jane died from Motor Neurone Disease in March 2018 after living with the disease for several years. She was cared for with compassion and dignity by the lovely staff at LOROS, who respected her wishes and helped her to manage her own disease and maintain independence until the end. LOROS is dependent on donations and provides an essential service to the people of Leicestershire and Rutland. Without it, patients like my mother would not receive such excellent palliative care.” You can support the Chainsnappers Cycling Club by sponsoring Andrew, Alex or Robert via their JustGiving pages.

Could You Change A Child’s Life In 2020? Article by Jonathan Walters
We’re looking for volunteer host families who can offer a stable, loving temporary home for children whose lives are still affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (West Leicestershire) is a registered charity that supports Belarusian children from disadvantaged social backgrounds who are still affected by the Chernobyl disaster. Every year we bring children from the most badly affected parts of Belarus to the UK for a month of recuperative care. During the visit, the children stay with a host family and undertake a programme of organised activities that gives them plenty of fresh air, friendship, essential health checks and above all the fun they so desperately need. We’re on the lookout for enthusiastic, committed families who can provide a stable, loving home for a vulnerable child that will be placed in their care for four weeks. Host families will need to have their own transport and ideally live within 30 minutes of the charity’s day centre, which is currently in Markfield. John Buckby, Group Co-ordinator for Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (West Leics) said: “Hosting a child is an incredibly rewarding experience and these visits do really change the lives of the children and the host families and volunteers that support them. The next visit is planned for the summer of 2020 but there is lots of organising before then, so it’s vital that we have host families in place by September 2019 to ensure we can commit to bringing these children, so desperately in need of our help, over to the UK.” If you think you can help, either as a host family or as a volunteer supporting the visits you can find more information on our website www. focc-westleics.org.uk or get in touch with our Group Co-ordinator, John Buckby, on 01455 285799 / 07738 324947 or by email at john.evolution@ btinternet.com
Shepshed Dynamo FC Welcome to Shepshed Dynamo! The Dovecote Stadium, Butthole Lane, Shepshed, LE12 9BN This year sees our 25th Anniversary as Shepshed Dynamo FC. The club has obviously been going a lot longer than that and has a great history as Shepshed Albion and Shepshed Charterhouse. I’m sure as the town grows there are a lot of residents who don’t know that we have a semi-pro football club in the town let alone know where it is. This year alongside the first team who’ll be playing in the UCL….. no not the UEFA Champions League but the United Counties League which is at Step 5 of the footballing pyramid, we also have an Under 16s who play on a Saturday
morning in the Midland Junior Premier League and for the first time since I’ve been at the club an Under 18s who’ll be playing in the Leicester Midweek League on a Thursday night. The aim of this is to bring some of those players through the ranks with a view to achieving first team senior football in the future. We also have very close ties with Ingles FC who usually play on alternate Saturday’s to the first team and the Shepshed Dynamo Sunday Juniors. The Juniors range from Under 7s to Under 18s, if of interest please get in touch.
It would be great to see some new faces up The Butthole this year. Come and enjoy the warm and friendly atmosphere whilst watching some good football at the same time. Full bar and refreshments are available. Below are a few things that we have available at the club. Please take a look! Finally, if you’d be interested in sponsoring or advertising then please send me an email and I’ll be in touch. There are numerous packages available and we have over 5000 followers on Twitter so your message will go far and wide.
Being our 25th Anniversary there’ll be a number of events going on at the club throughout the season. Please keep an eye on Social Media for these.
Room for Hire
We have a newly refurbished clubhouse with full bar and catering. If you’re looking for a Private venue for a party or event at a competitive price then please get in touch.
100 Club
Every non-league football club has to fundraise. There are obviously lots of costs involved in running a club to get the gates open on a match day.
Schools
This season we’re hoping to work more closely with the local schools on a few initiatives. To that end we’ll be starting a Junior Membership Scheme. This will allow a child Under 16 and Parents/ Guardians free entrance to all home league games. If this is of interest to you then please complete the short form below and either drop it into the club or take a photo and email it. We will then issue you with a membership card for you to gain free entrance at the turnstile on a match day.

Here at Shepshed Dynamo one of those fundraisers is the 100 club. Our aim is to get 100 members (as a minimum) to join. There will be a monthly draw with the chance of winning some money. The cost of the 100 club is £10 per month. This will be collected by Standing Order. The monthly draw will take place at the nearest home game to the 15th of each month. The prize winners will be notified and the results will be published on the website and social media. Prizes: 1st £50.00
2nd £30.00
3rd £10.00
The 100 club helps us massively! If you’re interested in joining then please email us and the relevant form will be sent to you. Alternatively you can collect one of the forms from the clubhouse. Charnwood BRAS Race To Raise Funds! Article by Paula Rowley
The Charnwood BRAS recently took part in the Clumber Park Fun Run and 10K to raise funds towards their highly thought of breastfeeding support service. Some of the peer supporters from the UNICEF Baby Friendly accredited service along with local parents, children, family and friends raced in either a 2K fun run or the 10K race. Some of the youngest racers benefited from the services of the BRAS as babies themselves! Peer supporter Helen Baum was the driving force behind the event: “Running is my passion, as is volunteering for the Charnwood BRAS, so it made sense to combine the two to raise some money for us. It was great to run with my fellow BRAS and I’m so grateful to everyone who donated to our cause.” The BRAS raised over £400 which will be put back into the running of their services and our peer supporter Kristie took home the trophy for first woman in the 10K! Angie Bell, Infant Feeding coordinator for LPT said "Another great achievement from our happy, dynamic group out in Charnwood. Running on a warm spring day in beautiful countryside whilst raising funds for such a good cause. A win win combination. The Charnwood BRAS really are an inspiration. Well done and thank you to everyone involved especially to the children who ran!". The Charnwood BRAS have been active in supporting parents to breastfeed in the local area for almost ten years. Parents often welcome this support, breastfeeding is natural but not always
easy and having encouragement and reassurance can really help. Elizabeth, a local parent says: “Without the time and support both in person and over the phone from the BRAS I don’t think I would have persisted [with breastfeeding]. My daughter is now 10 months old, I’m still breastfeeding and we are both very happy” The BRAS work to reassure and support new families with their own feeding goals by showing empathy and giving parents practical nonjudgemental support and evidence based information to support them with their individual needs. We are a voluntary service supported by Leicestershire Partnership Trust’s infant feeding specialists and health visiting teams. Parents to be highly rate the antenatal breastfeeding workshop which runs every month in Loughborough. After their baby arrives local parents in can access Charnwood BRAS breastfeeding support via telephone, email and Facebook or by attending one of several breastfeeding drop ins across the Charnwood region. The drop ins are popular meet ups where parents can come along and get support and talk to other parents going through similar experiences. All the services provided by the BRAS are completely free to access. Find out more at www.charnwoodbras.co.uk The BRAS welcome continued donations at www.raisinghealth.org.uk/appeals/charnwoodbras where you can read more about the valued work the group does.

The June meeting of the Shepshed History Society which was entitled the 'Duchess of Kedleston' was given by Mrs Heather Harrington who gave a fascinating talk relating to the making of a film portraying the life of the Duchess of Devonshire. It was in the year 1757 when Lady Georgiana Spencer was born into the aristocratic Spencer family of Althorpe House Northamptonshire. Growing up to become a great beauty with luxurious thick hair that she was to become famous for. She went on to lead a scandalous life even after marrying William, Duke of Devonshire who himself was no better. Such was Georgiana's fascinating life style that it was decided in 2008 to make a film of her memorable exploits. To make this film the company hired Kedleston Hall in Derbys, which was to masquerade as Althorpe House, Devonshire House in London and parts of Bath. Heather then gave some entertaining tales of the tricks the film crew got up to in order to protect the precious artefacts belonging to Kedleston. It was an entertaining evening which was enjoyed a by the society as a whole The July meeting on the 9th will be given by Mr Robert Mee, his subject to be, The Early Bradshaw Railway Guide. Everyone welcome.

Council Tenant Receives War Medal At 97 Article by Charnwood Borough Council
A chance conversation between 97-year-old Isabel Rycroft and Charnwood Lifeline warden Hazel Skellington has led to Isabel’s war service being recognised after more than 70 years. Isabel served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, the women’s branch of the British Army, during the second World War and when the pair got chatting, Hazel realised she would qualify for the War Medal 1939-1945 medal. Hazel, who visits Isabel most weeks at her home on Beacon Road and is also from a military background as her father served in the Royal Signals, applied to the Government for the medal, which arrived recently. Cllr Hilary Fryer, the Council’s Armed Forces Champion, presented the medal to Isabel and thanked her for her service during the war. Isabel said: “I remember being told I had to apply for the medal, but I never got around to it. Life just got in the way. I’m so happy that Hazel took it upon herself to apply on my behalf. It’s a lovely medal and brings back so many great memories of my time during the war.” Isabel was born in Cheltenham and lived in Chesham, Buckinghamshire until 19 years ago when she moved to Charnwood. During the war, Isabel was stationed in London, and was a short-hand typist for the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force, who were based in the top floor of the Selfridges building. Isabel would often be responsible for writing sensitive and important letters and documents in the run up to invasion and would often be asked by strangers on the bus for any information she held. It was an exciting and dangerous time. In 1944, Isabel married Norman, a medical records officer, and had three children. She now has two grandchildren and a great granddaughter who is three years old. Hazel said: “I began my role as a warden at the beginning of the year and as soon as I met Isabel, I was fascinated by her stories of when she was younger. During one of my visits I noticed a black and white photo of a young woman in uniform and she told me that it was her when she was in the ATS during the war. I was bought up in an Army background and when Isabel brought up the medal, I knew I had to apply for her. Seeing how happy it’s made her has made my year. If there are any veterans out there who haven’t received their medal, please reach out.” Cllr Fryer, who is also from a military family, paid Isabel a visit at her home, and the two hit it off straight away, swapping stories and sharing her own memories of serving in the armed forces and growing up during the war. Cllr Fryer said: “It was an absolute honour to meet Isabel. She truly is a great character and what a fascinating story she has to tell. Hazel has gone beyond her duties for Isabel, and she should be commended for that. Support for our armed forces community is so important, and the pride in Isabel’s face was a joy to witness.” Cllr Fryer has invited Isabel to the Loughborough Veterans’ Breakfast Club, which meets on the second Saturday on every month at the Toby Carvery in Loughborough. The breakfast club initiative supported by the Council under its Armed Forces Covenant commitment. The Council is also running a project with Rushcliffe and Melton councils to support serving and former personnel in our communities by highlighting issues they face and helping organisations ensure their services are geared towards helping them.

Cllr Keith Harris
T: 01509 557701 E: cllr.keith.harris@charnwood.gov.uk You will have already received your copy of the second Hathern Together brochure, those of you in Terracotta and Shepshed Road having it delivered by myself. Keep it handy so that you don’t miss any of the events you might like in the second half of the year in this amazing village’s programme. I would like to join Roy Dann, Martin Clayton and Ben Hardy in thanking Dave Neville for his drive and hard work in starting up Hathern 2018 last year and expanding it into Hathern Together this year. Hathern Together is an umbrella term for so many local groups to join in events. This time they are welcoming the Wildlife Group and Pastures New Playgroup. On page 4 of the brochure you can see the list of groups. If you have a business, would you consider sponsoring the next edition? After the frenetic activity of the Big Week we have fewer events per month. However, the weekend of July 6th and 7th is pretty full. Hathern residents are offering up their private spaces in Open Gardens. I was stunned at some of the gardens last year. It is a giveaway at only £3. You can open up your garden by contacting John Worsfold or Tony Croft (details in the brochure). The Community Library, both the smallest and the best community library in the county (after winning that accolade in the Rural Awards last year) will be open both days (all day on Saturday and 12 – 5 on Sunday) with refreshments, small activities and a book sale – no fixed prices, just a donation to funds. We will be having a treasure hunt as well. On the same weekend there will be a chance to enjoy Hathern’s meadows. There will be a talk in the church followed by a walk to see the meadows and wildflowers. As if that wasn’t enough, the school is holding its Summer Fair. The children will parade round the village in costume preceded by the Carnival King and Queen, ending at Pasture Lane where the fun continues with games, bouncy castle, stalls, cakes, raffle, and much more. I will write more about August next time but tickets are on sale for the 8th Wicked Festival headlined this year by noughties hitmakers The Feeling. The Family Arena will be there again and is free and the Adventure Arena is being enhanced and extended. There will be a lunch at the Church on July 26th at noon. The Hathern Village Association is seeking funding for a new marquee, as the present one is creaking a bit with age. The first bid was turned down because they were a victim of their own success. Having started small 8 years ago the Wicked Festival has grown to such a size that it gives the impression of being commercial. Ray Sommerfield and I tried to convince the officers that the ethos of the HVA was anything but commercial. The slick professionalism of the finished product hides the fact that it is entirely run by heroic HVA volunteers supported by a doughty group of library helpers and others. In the second bid in September we will be highlighting the smaller events during Big Week and throughout the year involving every small group in the village. Fingers crossed that we can convince the officers that the ethos is community based. I have continued to push William Davis to complete the outstanding work on Daisy Bank Park. At least it is open for business now after pressure from Cara, Neal and me. However, trees were replaced too late and some of the second batch have died along with many shrubs. I have worked with Cara Wild and Neal Chantrill at the council to move towards adoption by the parish council. Roy Dann and I made a site visit with Cara and she wrote a report detailing what WD still have to deliver. We will have to wait till the early winter for the trees and shrubs to be replaced again as the planting season is over. We will try to ensure that William Davis complete this work as soon as possible. Each councillor has £1,000 to give away in member grants. Last year I divided my grand equally between Dishley and Hathern. I have been talking to the Youth Group about a new pool table. If you have a project needing funds, contact me or my fellow councillor Emma Ward.

Volunteers Week takes place in June and it’s always a pleasure to attend the Volunteers Tea to thank everyone who volunteers via the Shepshed Volunteer Centre and John Storer House. Those who’ve volunteered for 10 years receive a special certificate and gift. I know that volunteering is a huge part of life in Shepshed and Hathern and that there are many activities that just wouldn’t happen without the dedication and hard work of so many volunteers – your commitment is greatly appreciated. I am very pleased to welcome important and far reaching changes to the Blue Badge scheme which will see those living with non-visible disabilities, including poor mental health, eligible for disabled parking badges for the first time. The Department for Transport has announced that from 30 August 2019 eligibility criteria for the scheme will be extended to cover non-visible disabilities where mobility is affected, including some types of autism and dementia, which have previously been ineligible for the often life-changing badges. There are many people living with non-visible disabilities that make getting out and about very challenging. So, it is right that the disabled parking badge scheme recognises this important fact. For drivers or passengers with dementia, anxiety disorders or reduced mobility, anticipating difficulty travelling, such as trouble finding a parking space, can result in a build-up of stress on top of the stress of the journey itself. The new guidance, which represents the biggest change to the scheme since the 1970s, will offer a lifeline to people who often find road travel difficult by providing better access to work and other amenities, while also helping combat loneliness by helping them stay connected to family and friends. It was great to see so many people celebrating Armed Forces Day recently. This is an important opportunity to show our appreciation to those who serve or have served in our armed forces. There was a great turnout from the Royal British Legion and our Reservists based locally. I hope that those serving and any veterans living in Shepshed and Hathern know that there is a monthly breakfast club which takes place at the Toby Carvery in Forest Road, Loughborough on the second Saturday of each month at 10am. Finally, just space to wish everyone involved in the Lions Carnival at Glenmore Park on August Bank Holiday Monday all the best with their preparations. This is always a really fun day out.

As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges onto the highways/footpaths, social services etc. My New Role I have been very busy since being my new role. Part of which is communities. I visited the Library and Museum in Market Harborough which are housed in the same building and are run by the County. I have attended the Health and Wellbeing Board which has Clinical representatives on it as well as Councillors and Officers. I found it very informative. Various topics were discussed such as Leicestershire Children and Families Partnership Plane 2018-2021 Progress Update, Unified Prevention Board Annual Report and Safeguarding Adult Board Development Plan 2019/20. I have also attended the Adults and Communities Overview and Scrutiny Committee the Committee is made up solely of County Cllrs with Officers in attendance to answer questions. Topics discussed were Adult Social Care Targeting operating Model, Capital investment into Adult Social Care Accommodation Based Support and a Review of Long Term Residential and Nursing Care Fees. The last one you may be pleased to learn is that County are going to increase the amount they will pay in the future towards care home fees. Charley Road Cross Roads I organised a meeting with representatives of the Town Council, Charley Parish and Shepshed Borough Cllrs to meet with officers at County to discuss County’s proposals for this junction. We put forward our concerns and concerns raised by residents regarding this junction. We will have to watch this space to see what improvements are going to be made following our meeting. A512/Ashby Road/Charnwood Road/Leicester Road Improvements I must apologise that by the time I had been made aware of the postponement of the exhibition the Shepshed Eye had already been distributed and the new date was before the next issue was published. I did try to make people aware of the change of date either by letter or Facebook and Twitter. I do hope that some of you managed to attend this exhibition and question the officers. I understand that there is a petition going round regarding these proposals as well as a petition about the alteration with the white lines at the top of Charnwood Road with its junction with Ashby Road. The petition is available around the town as well as in the Town Council offices, Glenmore Centre, The Volunteer Centre and Jolly Farmers. Advance Notice of a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) A temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) is to be made for the following location: Footpath K62, Shepshed /Nanpantan. This section of K62 runs down from the M1 round about and along to Longcliffe Golf Club. The duration of the restriction is not anticipated to exceed a period of 6 months. Action Fraud - There Has Been Plenty Of Activity In Fraud Just Lately Courier Fraud, Bogus Police and Officials Alert - Individuals have been receiving phone calls from people claiming to be a police officer or bank official. The suspect will say either: • There has been fraudulent activity at the victim’s bank and the staff at the bank are involved, the victim is then asked to withdraw money to
24 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news
either keep it safe or assist the police with their investigation • The victim’s card has been compromised. Your bank or police will never: • Phone and ask you for your PIN or full banking password. • Ask you to withdraw money to hand over to them for safe-keeping • Ask you to transfer money out of your account • Send someone to your home to collect cash, PINs, cards or cheque books. HMRC Alert - Action Fraud has experienced an increase in the report of malicious calls, emails and voicemails, to members of the public purporting to be from Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) Fraudsters state that as a result of the victim’s non-payment of tax or other duty, the victim is liable for prosecution or other legal proceeds. The email will contain a link to what appears to be the gov.uk website, however the website link is fake. What you need to do: • Always question unsolicited requests for your personal or financial information. • Don’t be rushed or pressured into making a decision. Under no circumstances would a genuine bank or some other trusted organisation force you to make a financial transaction on the spot. Online Vehicle Sales Alert - The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau • Fraudsters have been advertising vehicles and machinery for sale on various online selling platforms, this includes vehicles and machinery used by the agricultural industry. • It is vital that the public exercise caution when receiving emails or messages of this nature What you need to do: • Never transfer money for a vehicle you haven’t seen in person. • Avoid paying for the vehicle by bank transfer as it offers you little protection if you become a victim of fraud. Instead, use a credit card or payment services such as PayPal. • If you are purchasing from a company or person you don’t know and trust, carry out some research first, or ask friends and family for advice before completing a purchase, or contact the DVLA. Fake TalkTalk emails about a refund: • The emails state that the recipient’s TalkTalk account is in credit and that they are owed a refund. The links in the emails lead to malicious websites. • Don’t click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails and never respond to messages that ask for your personal or financial details. Annual Report At the Annual Parish meeting of the Town Council which was held on 29th May I submitted my Annual Report, this can be obtained by either contacting myself, the Town Council or going to my web page at County. Your Help Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such as overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess, inconsiderate parking (on pavements, yellow lines, outside of schools) etc., without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. It could be someone who has helped a neighbour, raised funds or is always there for others. Or it could be a group, organisation or business which has carried out some excellent work in the past 12 months. This year’s awards are being kindly supported through the council’s collaboration with EEM, a not-for-profit procurement company. It has awarded the Council a community contribution which is being used to support the event. Charnwood Community Heroes is also supported by John Storer Charnwood, an independent charity serving the communities of Charnwood with a range of activities and Sure Maintenance, the Council’s gas contractor. There are nine categories to enter plus the Harry Cook award which will be presented in memory of the Loughborough in Bloom stalwart. Everyone nominated will receive a Charnwood Community Heroes Award and be invited to our special presentation on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at John Storer House in Loughborough. It’s also important
