Charnwood Events To Pay Tribute On Armed Forces Day
Article by Charnwood Borough Council A host of events will be held in Loughborough on Saturday June 29th to celebrate Armed Forces Day. Charnwood Borough Council is proud to be once again organising a range of entertainment and attractions to recognise our Armed Forces. The Market Place will play host to the Syston Brass Band, the local Corps of Drums, the Barrow upon Soar Ukulele group and performers from local schools. Regular contributors the Charnwood Veterans’ Breakfast Club, the local Army Reserve Centre staff, Royal British Legion bikers and the Land Rover Club will be making a welcome return. As it’s market day, traders and local businesses will also be getting involved. There will also be vintage vehicles on display, face-painting, and the Veterans Breakfast Club will be serving teas, coffees and cakes. Alongside the market place events, there will also be an official unveiling of the life-sized armature model of Loughborough’s war horse Songster – created by artist Jeni Cairns for last year’s commemorations – at the Carillon Tower in Queen’s Park. The armature proved extremely popular during last November’s World War One events as it was covered in poppies made by local school children and community groups in Charnwood and joined the procession throughout the town. Councillor Hilary Fryer, the council’s Armed Forces champion, said: “Charnwood has a proud history of hosting events that honour and celebrate the Armed Forces and all they do for our country. The centenary of World War One events that took place in November last year were wonderfully received and attended, and I’m sure that the people of Charnwood will come out and show their support once again.”

Keep Those Knitting Needles Clicking For The Big Knit! Article by Peter Ralphs The Big Knit campaign continues throughout 2019 and Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling on Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to keep knitting or join in for the first time! Now in its 15th year, the campaign still needs to recruit more knitters to help create an impressive 1.6 million hats nationwide to adorn innocent smoothie bottles. For each behatted smoothie sold, Age UK receives 25p, and that money helps the Charity support older people who are facing later life alone. Tony Donovan, Executive Director of Age UK Leicester
Shire & Rutland said: “We need local people to join us and help knit another 26,000 miniature hats to help us hit our huge 80,000 local target by July 2019 (even though the campaign continues all year round). It’s such a fun campaign to get behind and it does so much to help older people in our area." “The money raised will make a big difference to the lives of older people by funding our hugely important services and classes. These services, which include Day Care, dementia support, Men/Women in Sheds and befriending amongst so many others, give local older people the chance to come along and make friends, learn new skills and most importantly have fun.”
Last year alone, more than one million hats were lovingly created nationally, with designs including the hugely popular unicorn, grizzly bear, fluffy sheep and desert island. For more information on The Big Knit contact Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland on 0116 2992233 or visit www.ageuk.org.uk/leics Please send completed hats to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland at Lansdowne House, 113 Princess Road East, Leicester LE1 7LA or hand them in at any of our 24 shops or Resource Centres. This year’s hat knitting patterns are available to download - to find out more visit: www.ageuk.org. uk/bigknit or pop into any of our addresses to request a leaflet.

Passion Youth Project News Article by Vicky Gould
Passion is a project that was set up as a safe place for the young people to go. It is now celebrating its 10th Birthday this month. It is self funded, relying on regular donations and grants to keep the doors open. We are totally inclusive we therefore don't charge anything for the young people to use the facilities. Passion continues to be there for the young people of Shepshed. Not only is it open the three nights of Thursday, Friday and Sunday 7-9pm, but we have now started offering an extra session on a Thursday 4-6pm for revision or homework. Unfortunately we have not had any take up for this session, so may stop doing it until we go back to school in September. This extra session will be run by differing staff from the drop in including retired teachers. The equipment is provided as we understand that young people never have a pen or pencil, let alone a calculator! We also offer snacks and drinks in order to help the brain cells work! We continue to utilize the new kitchen offering food at our monthly food fundraiser. This month it was on the 20th May. We collectively raised £138, which goes a small way to the general upkeep of the project. It also allows the community to come together and join in good home cooked food. It also allows our young people to gain valuable life skills from communication to be able to wash up correctly. They are then able to transfer these either at home or in the search for paid employment. There are many people that help with the setting up of this event and the cooking of the food required, without their help the evening would not take place. Can I spread a heartfelt thanks to all that help and take the time to support this event. We also have a program of events that Passion runs within the drop in sessions. We have cooking and bingo once a month on Friday evenings. These are both very popular as the result is food. The last Friday food session was to make burgers from scratch. The young people had a lot of fun molding the mince into a burger like shape, then were able to pick what they had on the finished product. We tried to get some salad into the buns as it is supposed to be a healthy eating project, not with much success. At least they now know how to make a burger instead of insisting on the fast food shop. The young people have also been learning to crochet on a Thursday night drop in. This was something else they asked us to provide. The items needed have been kindly donated from the community and utilised as you can see from the photo. One young person sat still and concentrated for 30 minutes on the item she was making. This is the first time I have seen her sit still for any time let alone that long. We continue to have around 30 children at every session. These vary in age from 11-18, with a growing number of new young people in the 11 year old age bracket. It is great to be able to provide a safe place for them to come and chat, annoy the volunteers with, what the young people call, music and, of course, drink tea and eat lots of biscuits! Our first session of Chat and Chomp was a great success. We have four young people attending this six week program. Working in pairs they were taught how to make shortcrust pastry, this again reinforces working with others and communication skills. The pastry was used to produce jam and lemon curd tarts and was that short it crumbled when taken out of the tins. This didn’t deter the young people or elderly volunteer, using a spoon to eat the produce! Then, as you can see from the photo, they did the tidying up which is just as important as the cooking in the learning process. There was a lot of talking and laughter in the session amongst the young people and adults. Upcoming Events 8th June Picnic in the park - Fundraiser at Queens Park, Loughborough. This is an event in Queens Park, Loughborough. We will have a stall there selling craft items, maybe a tombola, also hopefully home cooked cakes. Please come and say hello if you are there. Hopefully the weather will be like last year. 10th June Food fundraiser - Different quiches, new potatoes and salad. Sweet/pudding to be announced once we have decided what to bake. It goes without saying that all the food will be homemade and delicious. We are always looking for volunteers to help at the fundraising events Volunteers are always required when the drop in is closed. We require a cleaner, decorator, website management and help with marketing. These are all opportunities that don't require you to come into contact with the young people, although once you meet them you will wonder why you didn't do it years ago! If you would like to donate or volunteer please contact Vicky on either Facebook or call 07960861611.

Sue Hutton Awarded The Associate Distinction Of The Royal Photographic Society
Article by Sue Hutton
Sue Hutton, of Romway Close, Shepshed, has been awarded the Associate distinction of the Royal Photographic Society. She has been a member of the RPS for over six years, gaining her Licentiate in 2013. In order to qualify, Sue put together a panel of fifteen Travel photographs taken in Hong Kong two years ago. The panel had to be visually coherent and fulfil a statement of intent. Each photo had to have impact and be technically faultless. Sue travelled with a small group led by Michael Lau, a commercial photographer based in Nottingham. For her, it was the opportunity of a lifetime to travel to the Far East. When she got there, she realised that Hong Kong was not a city of magical views but is, in fact, shabby and grim. Nevertheless, the Chinese inhabitants are industrious and preoccupied with food. A Hong Kong housewife rarely believes her fish and frogs are fresh unless she sees the victims being despatched. Sue says,"I was so very pleased to be awarded my ARPS after six years and one previous failed attempt. The pass rate is 30-40%. The effort put into the project and succeeding has boosted my confidence immensely." The RPS's distinctions are internationally respected and sought after by both professional and amateur photographers. Submissions are held in different categories and are assessed by a qualified panel of senior members of The Society. Sue has recently won second prize in the photographic exhibition of the Ashby Arts Festival. She is a member of Shepshed and District Camera Club. She can be reached on 07968745813.

A Programme Of “Hit” Classics With The Loughborough Orchestra! Article by Gillian Butcher Coffee Morning
On Saturday June 17th, the Loughborough Orchestra is presenting a programme at Emmanuel Church, in which every item was either declared outstanding at first performance or would later become a well-known “hit” of the classical music scene! Saturday 8th June Local tenor, David Morris, the guest soloist, will be singing a great selection of popular operatic arias. There are many familiar tunes 10.00 am to please the ear, from titles such as The Magic Flute, Xerxes and Rigoletto. Insinger aid ofbecoming Head of singing David was a professional before at Loughborough Endowed Schools. He is a popular soloist, with his LOROS easy, wide –ranging voice adding quality to any concert performance. Schumann’s “Rhenish” symphony is the major featured orchestral piece. It was premiered on 6 February 1851 in Düsseldorf, conducted by Schumann himself. One record of the occasion says that members of the audience applauded between every movement, and especially at the end of the work when the orchestra joined them in congratulating Schumann by shouting "Hurrah”! When he composed the piece, he had just taken a new job, and everything about the Rhineland intoxicated him – from the majestic sweep of the river itself, to the gothic grandeur of Cologne Cathedral. So he poured it all into his biggest and most ambitious symphony: The concert starts with Rossini’s Tancredi Overture. Rossini was an early starter on the opera scene, composing his first at the age of twelve! Three weeks before his 21st birthday, he struck gold with his ninth opera, Tancredi. A Rossini scholar is quoted as saying “No composer in the first half of the 19th century enjoyed the measure of prestige, wealth, popular acclaim, or artistic influence that belonged At Shepshed Town Council Offices to Rossini.” As the first performance of Tancredi approached, Rossini realised he would not have time to write a new overture, so he re-used one he had composed previously! Rossini's earliest biographer, wrote that it was "high amongst the composer's masterworks" It quickly became a favourite with audiences is still a popular choice for orchestra performances. Steps For Steps Article by Janet Russell
The Steps Centre in Shepshed is busy planning a fundraising event which will involve not just the children who attend the charity but also their next-door-neighbours, St. Botolph’s Primary School. The Sponsored Lunchtime Toddle is due to take place on Saturday 15th June at 12.15 and children will complete a circuit by whichever way is suitable for them. Some will run or walk and others will use their walkers, wheelchairs or pushchairs. There will also be stalls, a tombola and a fabulous catering facility selling drinks and burgers. Centre manager, Janet Russell said, “We are very fortunate that St. Botolph’s has kindly agreed to let us use their grounds for our event and the Head Teacher, Mrs. Pepper, is keen for some of her pupils to be involved too. I was invited to speak with the children and show a short film about our work in assembly and the children were very interested to know more about the event. Hopefully they will come along with their families on the 15th to help us raise some much-needed money for our centre.” Steps provides support for children with conditions such as cerebral palsy and Down’s syndrome. Help is also given to the parents of the children who attend the Conductive Education sessions. No charge is made for this service and most of the £250,000 annual running costs are raised through events such as the Sponsored Toddle. Janet added, “If you would like to help on the day there is a variety of opportunities. The paperwork for the event is on our website www. stepscentre.org.uk if you fancy taking a few steps for Steps. Plus, we need volunteers to help run the stalls and to assist in other ways too. We are also looking for donations of items to sell on our stalls such as cakes, new clothes and tombola prizes. Please give me a ring on 01509 506878 or email me at manager@stepscentre.org.uk if you can help. We would be really grateful of your support.”
Every Little Helps Us At Steps Article by Janet Russell
The Steps Centre for Conductive Education in Shepshed has had some lovely visitors recently. They all have one thing in common… they all work at Tesco! These three ‘Community Champions’ have helped the charity in many ways, as the manager, Janet Russell explained. “We try to give our children little treats, especially at Christmas, Easter or for their birthdays and three people in particular are always ready to help. Nicola Neville from the Ashby Tesco store made sandwiches for our Christmas party, gave us chocolate bunnies at Easter and a fabulous retro record player for our auction. Nicola was keen to see the centre and find out what happens here so we were delighted to show her around and introduce her to our lovely children and their families. Earlier, Kru Parekh, the manager of Tesco Express in Shepshed popped in with his co-worker, Elaine, to deliver a donation of items for our tombola stall at the next fund-raising event, the Sponsored Toddle (check the website for details www.stepscentre.org.uk) . Mike Harrison, who is the Community Liaison person at Loughborough’s Tesco Extra store dropped by with a £25 voucher which we will give to the person who raises the most money at the Sponsored Toddle. We can’t thank them, and Tesco, enough!” So, for Steps Centre, every little really does help!

Tesco Gives ‘Bags of Help’ To Shepshed Charity Article by Janet Russell
The Shepshed charity, Steps, has just received the news that it has won a £4000 grant in the recent ‘Bags of Help’ event which was held in local Tesco stores. Shoppers are encouraged to collect a token with their till slip and vote for one of three organisations represented by putting their token into the box of their choice. At the end of a two-month voting period, the tokens are counted and the winner is announced. A delighted centre manager, Janet Russell, told us, “We were thrilled to receive the news that we have been awarded the grant. £4000 will enable us to make a difference to the lives of the children who attend Steps and to their families. We offer our unique service free of charge so to receive this award from Tesco has given us all a big boost. Every little really does help!” To find out more about the charity, please go to www.stepscentre.org.uk

Shepshed History Society
Article by Marjorie Schulz The speaker chosen to entertain the Shepshed History Society on May 14th was Dr Anne Featherstone, a well known historian who has appeared on many T.V. programmes. Her talk this time was to explain in detail the Victorian methods of keeping the law and how different it was to our modern day standards. Anne then began the fascinating story of an unmarried pregnant maid from Ilkeston who gave birth in the outside privy. Having done so she went back inside for a kitchen knife slit the baby's throat and then put the poor;little soul in a biscuit tine and buried her amongst the pig manure in the nearby pig sty. Anne then went on in great detail of the ensuing trial of the maid who it had to be said wasn't unduly concerned at what she had done apparently for it would appear that many girls in those days who were pregnant out of wedlock also dispatched their poor innocent baby to an early grave and surprisingly enough they normally had relatively light sentences. Following this gruesome tale Anne then told the story of a young teenager who had stolen a watch and ended up being imprisoned on a moored up prison ship while awaiting transportation to Australia. And life was so cruel and barbaric on these ships that the prisoners would often harm themselves in order to get moved to a hospital ship just for a welcome respite. Then later they would be loaded onto a ship bound for Australia, locked up in large cages for the whole journey, even children as young as five were subjected to this unspeakable cruelty, a very thought provoking talk but very entertaining. The speaker for the June meeting on the 11th will be Mrs Heather Harrington and the subject to be The Kedelston Duchess.

Barnardo's Supported Lodgings Article by Kam Doll
Supported Lodgings is a valuable accommodation option available to young people transitioning from the care system to more independent living. It is family-based support within the homes of members of the community who are willing to provide a spare room to a vulnerable young person aged 16 to 21 who cannot live with their own families and who are not yet ready for independent living. Our service recruits and trains people who can provide appropriate accommodation; this means the young person will have their own room and use of shared facilities. Through our excellent training programme, ongoing guidance and support, we enable our providers to acquire the skills and confidence to support a young person both practically and emotionally to gain the necessary skills required to eventually live independently. Whilst in placement, as well as providing emotional support, our providers focus on offering practical support around key areas of independence; such as managing on a budget, shopping, cooking, education, social skills and being a good tenant. Supported lodgings is something you can do alongside your current employment / commitments and you can receive a payment of £150 per week. You will be fully involved in placing a young person and it will be your decision as to who is placed with you. If you are working with a young person who would benefit from a Supported Lodgings Placement, or are interested in becoming a Supported Lodgings Provider, please contact the service on 02476 372596 or email us at BSLmidlands@barnardos.org.uk to find out more. If you are a young person interested in Supported Lodgings, ask your social worker or personal advisor for more information.

T
he Hathern Together programme is about to step up about 3 gears in June. June 7th sees the Launch Party in the Anchor with those cover wizards Martin, Roy, Bill and Lewis (strummin’ instead of drummin’) until the wee small hours. Martin will no doubt be rushing over from the village hall where there will be a youth club party from 6.15. So if he’s a bit out of breath on the first number, then you know why. This is the kick off to an amazing spree of events in June. On Saturday 8th there will be the village fete. There will be table top games, stalls, food vendors, bouncy castles, Hathern Concert Band, live acoustic music and the Pub in the Park open all day. There will also be a chance to make a clown of yourself in the It’s a Knockout competition. You can set up a team and enter for £12. As if that’s not enough for one day, the marquee will be the scene of Stetsons and stirrups for Country in the Park from 7 – 11 with two bands entertaining Hathern’s wannabe Texans. On Sunday there will be the Big Walk starting at the school on Pasture Lane at 10. This is a chance to discover the landscape around the village with signposts along three tracks at your own pace. After working up a big appetite, you can go straight to the BBQ in the Park at 12 and then sit back and chill to watch the cricket match in the afternoon which bowls off at 1 with the Pub in the Park there to make sure you don’t dehydrate. On Monday 10th the marquee will be stuffed with all sorts of brass curiosities when Hathern Band move in to give free tuition to young people with a chance join to the training band if you stick with it and continue to bang that drum or lug that tuba about. After school on Tuesday Hathern Community Library are inviting children to go on a bear hunt from and around the park finishing in the library to read. I will be there to read stories. At 7 pm there will be the Big Quiz with teams competing to show who has the biggest store of mostly useless knowledge. Even if you don’t fancy competing, you can enjoy the atmosphere and Pub in the Park. On Wednesday 12th the marquee will be the venue for Lunch in the Park. You have to book for this by 7th June so that the organisers know how many to cater for. Tickets are available at the parish and Baptist churches at their lunch dos. On the same day the brownies and guides invite all girls 7 – 18 (sorry, boys) to get a taster session of what they do. Immediately afterwards in the marquee Hathern Church’s Praise Group
invite you to sing hymns at 7.30 followed by a short talk. This is to show what they do all the time in the church. Get your leotards out for June 13th at the Community Centre (normally at the village hall but they expect hordes on this occasion!) for a taster session for the new fitness Programme EndorFIT. I think that’s a reference to those hormones you are supposed to get flooding round giving you a high. The keen ones will go for the Circuit session with something awesome sounding High Intensity Interval Training (with the stragglers lovin’ the intervals) from 6.30 to 7.15 (in the evening, yes) followed by a stretch session for the less intrepid or both for the gluttons for punishment. If you can still manage the short stretch across Pasture Lane after that, you can go to the Meet the Neighbours event at 7.30 in the park. This is for any club or society seeking new members or volunteers or advice or for residents seeking opportunities to join in and/or volunteer. The latter category was sadly missing last year so we would all love to see new people and tell them about the multifarious opportunities there are in this vibrant village to do just that. No-one should be bored or lonely in this village. There is an anonymous quote on the Hathern Together website. ‘We can’t believe how much effort goes into your events’. We can’t believe it either sometimes. Any help would be greatly appreciated in dozens of organisations. Please give a bit of your time, even a few hours, to erecting marquees or putting up fences or in hundreds of other ways. Ben Hardy’s latest digital masterpiece covering the second 6 months will be hitting your letterboxes soon. Please keep it handy so that you don’t miss any of the many events planned for the rest of the year. I hope to see lots of you at the events. At last the work has been completed on Daisy Bank Park, at least enough to open it on May 24th. So by the time you read this, residents will have been able to enjoy the facilities over the bank holiday and half term. I have been pushing for this for 6 months and have worked with planning and enforcement officers to get William Davis to put the park in a fit state to use. They have taken their time but the park is now usable. Most of the dead trees have been replaced but very late and we are hoping that the spells of heavy rain at that time will keep them alive this time. 8 dead trees have not been replaced. The weeds were treated but are growing again and WD will have to maintain this until the park gets its first and then final certificate of completion. The parish councillors are keeping a close eye on it as well and have reported the above concerns. We have all worked persistently to badger WD. So get out there and enjoy at long last what you should have had some time ago.

I was sorry to receive notice recently that the Environment Agency had decided to approve a variation to the permit Biffa would need to operate an incinerator at Newhurst Quarry. Having fought now for many years against this plan, alongside local residents, since it was first proposed we still wait to see what Biffa decide to do with the site. The local concerns about the impact an incinerator would have on air quality and traffic are still valid and it remains unclear whether incineration of our waste is still a sensible policy to pursue as things have changed so much in the management of our waste. I shall continue to raise concerns with DEFRA Ministers, the Environment Agency and others. You will have noticed that we now have many more defibrillators around Shepshed and Hathern (and other places) over recent years. Thanks to local fundraising the defibrillators, if accessed quickly in an emergency, really can make the difference between whether someone survives a cardiac arrest or not. It has been suggested to me that Hathern might benefit from having an additional emergency telephone system. Residents can register to be on the system and, if an emergency happens, a number of calls are made to locate very local and rapid help. I recently hosted a meeting between East Midlands Ambulance Service and the VETS promoters and they will be working together before talking further to village residents. Many families contact me about the education and support needs for their children who have special educational needs. We have the fantastic Ashmount School in Loughborough but it is clear that more specialist provision to deal with a wider variety of needs will be necessary in the future. So, I’m delighted that Leicestershire County Council is proposing to expand its SEND provision across the county, including at Hind Leys in Shepshed. In addition, the Department for Education also recently announced it would fund the building of a further 50-place special free school for pupils with Social Emotional and Mental Health needs on the Iveshead campus in Shepshed. Finally, the Treasury Select Committee in the House of Commons, which I chair, recently published a detailed report on the access to financial services by vulnerable consumers. Financial inclusion is a key goal in ensuring everyone is able to manage their money and feel in control of their lives and I was really pleased to be able to highlight the issues and barriers faced by vulnerable customers (and we are all vulnerable at some point in our lives) in managing their money.
Running Club Takes Over Article by Ray Draycott
Shepshed Running Club successfully took over the organising of Dishley Parkrun last month. Now nearly a year old this local 5k run (not a race) starts and finishes at Loughborough Rugby Club's pavilion, just off the A6. Dishley regularly has over 300 participants who run, jog or just walk the flat scenic course. Club Chairman Richard Bibb said "Every week many of our members take part so we decided to become more involved and manage the run for a week. Its great to have a Parkrun so near to Shepshed and Hathern". To enter you need to pre-register through the Parkrun website. Runs are weekly, on Saturday mornings and free to enter. For more info about SRC visit the club's website or Facebook page.

We deal with housing problems, (such as trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, Anti-Social Behaviour, whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property. We also deal with planning issues. Planning P/19/0782/2 – 31 Springfield Road - Proposed demolition of existing timber-framed workshop buildings; conversion and change of use of the existing mill building from Class B1(c) to Class C3 and associated internal and external alterations to create 4 no. dwelling houses; erection of a two-storey apartment building to create 2 no. apartments; and associated works. This application has been called in by the Ward Councillor, Christine Radford, as she is concerned about the lack of parking and turning spaces due to the fact that Springfield Road already has a problem with parking which already extends into Orchard Close. P/19/0661/2 – 26 The Meadows – Erection of conservatory to rear of dwelling. P/19/0572/2 – 21 Radnor Drive - Erection of single storey rear extension. P/19/0503/2 – 11 Newark Close - Proposed single storey rear extension and front porch. P/19/0812/2 – 4 Beaumaris Crescent - Single storey extension to rear and side of dwelling. P/19/0264/2 – 86 Leicester Road - Proposed erection of detached dwelling P/19/0785/2 – 37 Countrymans Way - lawful development certificate (proposed) for single tory rear extension. CCTV – at the time of going to print The CCTV is nearly up and running and will be monitored 24/7 by Charnwood Borough Council. It is thanks to Charnwood that the installation of the CCTV has come to fruition due to the fact that CBC gave Shepshed Town Team a grant of £24,000. This was part of the remaining balance from the shop front improvements. There are a few teething troubles due to the timers being used were the same ones which service the Christmas lights and problems with the BT line. Monthly Surgeries We shall continue to hold our regular monthly surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council offices, Charnwood Road, from 10-11am. No appointments are necessary. Cllr Christine Radford T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com
As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges onto the highways/footpaths, social services etc. My New Role On Wednesday 15th May I was given a new role and I am now cabinet support for Adults Social Care. I was thrown into the deep end because on the following Friday morning I had to give a presentation to Users of our services. I highlighted the County’s policy on our Whole life disability strategy. This strategy has been shaped following a series of workshops and talking to over 1,000 people. I took the opportunity to visit the stands showing some of the small adaptations to enable people to remain in their own homes. Such as floor pads which alert carers that an elderly or disabled person has got up, door alarms, reminders to take medications plus many more. County have been looking at how it could develop more accommodation with care. County have already developed a new extra care scheme in Loughborough and built four specially adapted homes for people with learning disabilities leaving hospital, and more are already under way. Cabinet will be considering an even bigger plan which would see a considerable number of new dedicated specially adapted homes being developed over the next 10-20 years. Homes where people can live their independent lives, but have the support available when they need it. This includes support on a 24/7 basis. If you think you need more help to identify what your care and support needs are, you can ask for a care and support assessment by calling the Adult Social Care customer services centre on 0116 305 0004. The assessment is free of charge. For information about the assessment process and eligibility criteria see link – www.leicestershire.gov.uk/ assessment-and-eligibility. Charley Road Cross Roads This cross roads is one of the worst accident black spots in the County. I have had numerous meetings with officers at County to discuss what additional improvements could be carried out to make this junction safer. The latest meeting was 2 weeks ago and report of their findings and what they intend to do to improve the accident rate at this junction will be issued within the next few weeks. I shall keep you informed. A512/Ashby Road/Charnwood Road/Leicester Road Improvements The public meeting is now pencilled in for 18th June (not confirmed at the time of going to print) from 2-7 pm in the Town Council Offices. I have no hesitation in repeating my concerns which I mentioned in last month’s report. I have had a chance to look at some of these proposals and am very concerned that one of the proposals is to stop traffic leaving Iveshead Road and turning left into Ashby Road. The proposals are to make traffic cross over into Charnwood Road or turn right towards Loughborough. I am concerned that traffic from dwellings on Iveshead Road which wants to go towards Ashby will use Charley Road cross roads, which we know already is a dangerous junction. I ask residents if they visit this exhibition and they are also concerned about this proposal they could make a comment regarding this, together with other concerns they might have about the alterations/improvements on the A512. I would also like to report that these road works are due to start on this stretch of road from the junction with Snells Nook up to the M1 junction 23 and along the A512 Shepshed West, East and Central on 22nd July, this will be for a period of at least 18 months. Residents may be wondering what is happening with the area of land next to the petrol station on the A512 next to Snells Nook. This is going to be made into site office area for these road works. I have asked that the cycle way and footpath are kept open at all times for residents.

Shepshed Re-Cycling Centre - Tip The renovation which is proposed to install new drainage so that the whole site drains to the foul sewerage system, due to restriction on the rate of flow, this will require the installation of an attenuation tank on site to store liquid prior to its controlled release into the sewerage network. This work will include resurfacing and the opportunity is being taken to profile the upper level to remove kerbs that creates a trip hazard for site users. It is now scheduled to commence on Monday 2nd September for 11 weeks and is scheduled to reopen on Saturday 16th November. It was decided not to close the centre down during the busy summer holiday period and the late August bank holiday. The closure information will be put on the site gates. Initially members of staff will also be on hand on typical site opening days to redirect members of the public to the alternative sites which are:- Loughborough is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and weekends. Mountsorrel is open Monday, Thursday, Friday and weekends. Both sites will allow access to Shepshed permit holders during the works. Coalville is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and weekends. Camera Car Camera Cars are proving very popular, but it is down to the schools to approach County to have one visit their school. Currently we have 2 schools in Shepshed signed up to this scheme. A patrol car with camera to monitor parents who flout parking restrictions outside schools will patrol and issue £70 fines for illegal parking. The vehicle does not remain stationary while it is monitoring an area but instead circles around the location. The built-in GPS technology recognises when the vehicle is entering an enforcement area and begins recording using number plate recognitions. If a vehicle is found to be parked illegally, the recording is sent back to the county council office and it is from there it is decided whether a fine is to be issued. Grants Available For School Leavers I have reported in the past and shall continue to do so about grants that are available from Thomas Harley Charity which I sit on as a County Councillor. Grants are available from this Charity towards books, accommodation etc., if your child is going to University/College or if they are doing an apprenticeship or training for equipment such as tools for hairdressing, car mechanics, building trade, catering etc. Income of the family must be below £36,000pa. Applicants need a letter from a tutor confirming they support them going onto further education. Grants are looked at in March and September. You will need to contact the charities solicitors who are Mather Jamie on 01509 233433 and the solicitor is Mr. A. Ward. Advance Notice Of A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) A TTRO is to be made for the following location Kirkhill, and The Lant. The purpose of the TTRO is to allow LCC to safely undertake carriageway patching works. The TTRO will incorporate a temporary road closure, temporary suspension of one-way system, temporary prohibition or waiting and loading. The duration of the restriction is not anticipated to exceed a period of 1 day commencing on Sunday 16th June. A512 Road Works I would like to reassure residents that following information out in the public domain that Shepshed will not be cut off when these major road works are carried out. I am aware that these road works will cause major problems to residents and as I live just off the A512 I will be particularly affected. When the road works are being carried out on the Shepshed section of the A512 and there is no right turn in Leicester Road, you will still be able to turn right into Charnwood Road and vica-versa. Your Help Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such as overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess, inconsiderate parking (on pavements, yellow lines, outside of schools) etc., without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 502974 or e mail christine_radford@hotmail.com or christine.radford@leics.gov. uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road, 10-11am. No appointment is necessary.
