Bouncing Easter Bunnies

Article written by Janet Russell Steps Conductive Education Centre would like to say a huge thank you to Nicola Neville, Ashby Tesco’s Community Champion, for donating 14 chocolate bunnies to give out to the children who attend sessions at the Shepshed charity. The centre provides a vital service for children with conditions such as Down’s syndrome and cerebral palsy and likes to make a special occasion of events such as Easter by giving each child a chocolate egg or bunny. Janet Russell, the manager at the centre said, “It is thanks to people like Nicola that we are able to provide extra treats for our children."

Nicola has always been so supportive of our work and has donated sandwiches for our Christmas party (made by Nicola herself at 5.00am on the morning of the party!), then Smartie tubes so that people could fill them with £1 coins and donate to Steps and now the chocolate bunnies for our Easter treat. Mike Harrison, the Community Champion for the Loughborough Tesco Extra donated a £25 voucher which we used to buy more eggs and Kru Parekh, the manager of the Shepshed Tesco Express donated 10 chocolate eggs. To find out more about this charity, please visit www.stepscentre.org.uk or look for Steps on Facebook.

Shepshed Cancer Support Group

Shepshed Probus Club

On Tuesday 4th June 2019, a new group is starting up. It will be known as the Shepshed Cancer Support Group.

The monthly meeting of the Shepshed Probus Club which took place on Monday 01/04/2019 @junction 23 Truckstop.

Article written by Philip Gibson

Article written by Horace Lister

Cancer affects everyone. Not only does the patient suffer, but also partners, relatives and friends. This group is aimed at anyone who has had problems or concerns about cancer. We hope to be able to offer help and information related to Cancer. In the coming weeks We will be looking at inviting professionals who will be able to offer their support in nursing care or even financial problems and more. For further information please contact M Gibson on 07547 326566

The newly installed President of the club started by welcoming all our members and the Speaker of today Mr Steven Flinders.

Shepshed Art Group Exhibition Article written by Val Singh

The Shepshed Art Group held an exhibition at Livio’s Italian Restaurant on 7th and 8th April. It was very well attended and everyone appreciated the high standard of the artwork. Twenty five paintings were sold. Donations, raffle and refreshments raised £754.10 and the proceeds were donated to Cancer Research UK. The photo shows from left to right Livio Buttarazzi the restaurant owner, Christina Walsh Manager of Loughborough branch CRUK, her assistant manager Ian MacKie and Val Singh who runs the group.

Under general business, it was repeated that the Probus magazine was available, and that the annual subscription was now due. The grapevine ring around and membership lists remain unaltered, and therefore were not necessary to update. Honorary membership was bestowed upon Gil Edmonds for his long service to the club. Stan White came up with some very true to life corny jokes, [lots of laughs]. Grace was said by the President, and a very nice lunch was provided, even the Speaker in anticipation of a good talk.

Shepshed Special Community Bus Fundraising Event

The monthly raffle was drawn, and won by a pretty regular winner.

Article written by Alison Sharp

Our Speaker then delivered a very interesting talk entitled "Terror in the skies", which was an account of the 9 Zeppelin raid on the midlands, including Loughborough, where a granite set has been placed in the road [The Rushes], to remind us all of the terrors inflicted upon us in 1916.

We are having a fund raising event on Saturday 1st June 19 at Shepshed's Iveshead Theatre, 7pm to raise more funds towards a new community bus for shepshed, the very talented duo Kieran Sutcliffe and Luke Sabatino who sing songs of "Alfie Boe and Michael Ball" are doing a return show for us. They came in October last year and the show was a complete sell out, standing ovations lots of applauding and shouts for more. We have a few tickets left and they can be purchased from The Shepshed Town Council priced at £10.00 each.

Apologies were noted and recorded in the names of Steve Page [ holiday ], Gordon Mayson and Ben Burton both of whom were indisposed.

The raids also involved Stokeon-Trent, Burton-on-Trent. One of the pilots of the Zeppelins was known to be Marlene Dietrich's father. PHOTO: Front Row Left to Right: New members Ruth Cox and Mandy Riches. Back Row: Centre President Robert Hall with the two Proposers Janet Sinclair and Phil Marriott

If you have not seen them don't delay, get your tickets before they are gone, you won't be disappointed.

The Rotary Club Of Shepshed

There will be a bar selling wine and beer and soft drinks. We will also have a raffle

The Rotary Club of Shepshed have great pleasure in welcoming Ruth and Mandy to our Rotary Club, and we look forward to working with them as we serve the Shepshed Community and Rotary International.

Article written by Ngaire Hall

A total of 70 people were killed, and 130 injured during the whole raid. Appreciation was shown in the usual way for a well delivered talk. The next meeting will take place on13/05/2019, which is a week later than usual, due to Bank Holiday arrangements.

Passion Youth Project Article written by Victoria Gould

Passion is a project that was set up as a safe place for the young people to go. It is now celebrating its 10th Birthday in June this year. It is self funded, relying on regular donations and grants to keep the doors open. We are totally inclusive we therefore don't charge anything for the young people to use the facilities. Passion continues to be there for the young people of Shepshed. Not only is it open the three nights of Thursday, Friday and Sunday 7-9pm, but we have now started offering an extra session on a Thursday 4-6pm for revision or homework. This extra session will be run by differing staff from the drop in including retired teachers. The equipment is provided as we understand that young people never have a pen or pencil, let alone a calculator! We also offer snacks and drinks in order to help the brain cells work! We have already utilized the new kitchen even though it is not quite finished. We had our food fundraiser on a Tuesday this month which caused a decline in the number that attended. We still raised £97 for the ongoing costs of Passion. The pies didn't go to waste as the young people finished them off without any problems! We have also used the kitchen to cook pizza in a drop-in session and Chocolate crispie cakes (as it was Easter after all) on a Sunday session. The cooking sessions will be mainly on a Friday on an adhoc basis. The next one will be advertised to the young people. Upcoming events 17th May Chat and chomp - This will be the first session of this which has been made possible by the new kitchen. Older people will be showing the young people basic cooking skills, then they will all sit down and eat what has been made. I am looking forward to this session and eating the results. 20th May Food Fundraiser - Cottage Pie, Mixed veg and gravy OR Lasagne, garlic bread and salad. Vegetarian options will be available for both. Pudding will be either lemon or bakewell tart. It goes without saying that all the food will be homemade and delicious. 27th May Oaks Fair - Fundraiser at Oaks fair. It costs around £19,000 to keep the doors of Passion open. We are always looking for ways to get funding towards the cost. If you have any ideas please get in touch. We are always looking for volunteers to help at the fundraising events. Our next one outside of Passion is the Oaks Fair on May Bank Holiday, where we will have a stall for Wine and water, tombola and craft items. Please come and say hello if you are there. Hopefully the weather will be like last year. We have a standing order form that people can fill out to regularly give to the running costs of Passion. This can be obtained from either the back of any church in Shepshed or from Passion Youth Hub in the Bull Ring. We also require regular donations of biscuits or cake for the young people to devour. We are also looking for empty and full bottles of wine for the Oaks fair. Volunteers are always required when the drop in is closed. We require a cleaner, decorator, website management and help with marketing. These are all opportunities that don't require you to come into contact with the young people, although once you meet them you will wonder why you didn't do it years ago! If you would like to donate or volunteer please contact Vicky on either Facebook or call 07960861611.

Artists Appointed For Shepshed Art Project

Article written by Charnwood Borough Council Artists have been commissioned for a public art project in Shepshed. Charnwood Borough Council has appointed Derbyshire-based firm Sculpture Works Ltd to produce artwork for the Buttercup Fields development in Shepshed. Sculpture Works Ltd has worked on a range of different public art projects for councils and organisations around the country. Sculptor Denis O’Connor and printmaker Bernie Rutter will work with the Shepshed community to gather ideas and inspiration for the project Matt Bradford, head of cleansing and open spaces at the Council, said: “A key aspect of this project is community involvement and we look forward to seeing the artists work with residents to develop a creative and attractive piece of public art. We’re delighted to have Denis and Bernie on board. They have clearly demonstrated how they would involve residents and were keen to speak to the community to gather ideas. I hope residents will take the opportunity and get involved with one of their workshops. It’s important to remember that this project is being funded by contributions from developers in the area and is specifically for a piece of public art.” Bernie said: “We were really pleased to have been chosen to deliver this public art commission at Buttercup Fields in Shepshed and look forward to creating artworks which will visually enhance the site with reference to ideas which explore the sites natural habitat and wildlife. We’re looking forward to speaking to members of the community about their ideas and working with them to create artwork which will complement the local area.” Denis and Bernie will be hosting two art workshops and residents are invited to find out more about the project and create art. The workshops will take place at the greenspace near to Celandine Road on Friday May 24 and Saturday May 25 between 10am-4pm. The estimated cost of the project is £75,000 which is being funded through a section 106 agreement specifically for public art in this area. The project should be completed later this year. Section 106 funding is when a developer agrees to contribute funding towards improvements in the community. For more information about Sculpture Works, including examples of other projects it has been involved in, visit www.sculptureworks.org.uk

Come along and enjoy lunch - choose from wood fired pizza, organic beef burgers, venison and bison, spicy homemade samosas, authentic Caribbean BBQ, Indian and Thai cuisine to name but a few. Charity Link Is Looking To Make It A Record-Breaking Year For The Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge! Article written by Rachel Markham

Charity Link, an organisation supporting people in need across Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland and Northamptonshire, is looking for individuals and groups of family, friends and colleagues to take part in its annual Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge, which this year takes place on Sunday 22nd September. Launched in 2016, Charity Link’s Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge is a unique 16 mile walking or running event which begins and ends at Bradgate Park in Leicestershire. The challenge takes in the peaks of Beacon Hill, the little known Bardon Hill (which is Leicestershire’s highest point and just 88ft short of a mountain), and the famous ‘Old John’ Tower in Bradgate Park itself.  Last year’s event saw 60 challengers take part with over £8,000 raised to help provide essential items, including food, clothing and beds for local people in need.

Half Marathon Comes To Shepshed And Hathern

Charity Link hopes that more than 100 challengers will take part in the 2019 event and that over £10,000 will be raised which will provide essential items to ensure that vulnerable local people are warm, safe and fed.

There was a large turnout from Shepshed Running Club (SRC) at this years Loughborough HM. Eight runners took part in the main race, regarded as one of the hardest in the county, with the Club fielding seven teams in the Relay. Competing against 22 other teams SRC's Team No2 finished in second place. Club Chairman Richard Bibb said "What a fantastic result. We had 28 runners in the Relay, many racing for the first time having progressed through our Thursday evening beginners sessions." In the main race first male home was Ian Benskin, 1:32:17, and Amy Mark was SRC's first woman over the line in 1:49:40. The photos are of two of Shepshed's relay teams and the Club celebrating at the finish.

Individual registration is £15 with challengers pledging to raise £100 via sponsorship or fundraising. Full details on the event and registration forms can be found at www.charity-link.org/leics3peaks or call 0116 222 2200.

Calling All Bus Users

Friends Of The Charnwood Forest

Article written by Roger Haycock

Article written by Dr D McNeil

The Shepshed Town Team will soon be launching a consultation to ask all who may be concerned, their views about introducing a new one way system in Shepshed and I would urge all bus users to participate. Over the last few years Shepshed has gained a new Skylink service connecting us to the Airport, Nottingham and Derby and the 129 service has been re-routed to compensate in a small way for the loss of the no 4 caused by a reduction in its use. This service was well used prior to the pedestrianisation of Swan Street in Loughborough and its re-routing around the new inner ring road. This means that the closest stop to the centre of the town for those going into Loughborough is in Fennel Street, which is quite far from the market place, particularly for anybody with reduced mobility and is the most likely explanation for the reduction in passengers. The planners who designed the scheme for the inner ring road and the pedestrian area, always intended that buses would continue to travel through Swan Street and the High Street. Bus movements were to be slow and give way to pedestrians. Unfortunately, there was a strong lobby against this and the County Council held a consultation, in which less than a thousand people participated, a very small percentage of the population of the Borough of Charnwood. There were about 100 more against buses going through Swan Street than in favour. Buses were banned from Loughborough Town Centre and the no 4 gradually became less frequent and eventually was withdrawn. This is why I am calling for Shepshed bus users to take part in this forthcoming consultation because any new one way system is likely to result in bus re-routing, causing difficulties for those who use buses to travel around Shepshed and possibly even the loss of further services.

If you would like to support a local charity and have the chance to win £250, then the Steps Super Lottery is the one for you! For only £5 per month your numbered ball will be entered into the draw, giving you the chance to win enough to buy yourself a special treat! Steps is a very special centre in Shepshed which caters for children with Down’s syndrome and cerebral palsy along with other disorders which may affect movement. The charity extends its support to the families of those children who attend and provides an invaluable service, completely free of charge. The lottery helps to raise the £250,000 which is needed every year to pay for centre’s running costs so your contribution and support is really needed. Centre manager, Janet Russell said, “Here at Steps, support is given to the families who bring their lovely children to us. Parents have described us as providing a lifeline. One parent told me that the Steps team has great technical knowledge, enthusiasm and deep empathy. Each practitioner is driven by their passion to help children who have been disadvantaged by their condition at a very young age. They see the untapped potential in every Steps child. They really believe in these special Steps children.” To find out other ways of helping Steps to raise the money needed to ensure the continuation of this vital service, please go to the website www.stepscentre.org You can now donate by text! Dog Poo Found Near Children's Play Area

Article written by Brenda Snape This was discovered during a visit to some of the Town Council’s parks with the Dog Warden, we could not believe that some irresponsible person had let their dog foul so close to the children’s play area on Sandringham Rise. Shepshed Town Council provides and maintenances many dog bins in all of the areas we are responsible for. Once again, please ensure that you clean up after your dog, it is an offence not to.

On the 15th April at the Woodhouse Eaves village hall The Friends of the Charnwood Forest had a talk on Stoneywell Cottage, and, in particular, its gardens. Mr Roy Mitchell started the story of Stonewell’s history with a list of personalities and some statistics. Apparently the Cottage came into existance when, through an arrangement with a local farmer, the land was exchanged for a farm house designed and built by the Gimsons. Later an adjoining patch of wood was purchased. The Gimson family were part of the Arts and Crafts movement which was a reaction to the industry of Victorian Britain. The original setting of the Cottage was intended to be wild, although a few trees were planted and paths were landscaped. It was intended as a summer retreat only (plus Christmas), which is as well as the pantry regularly flooded in winter. In the 1950’s Donald Gimson and his family used it as a full-time residence. He and his wife were keen gardeners; she kept meticulous notes on the garden. By 2013 it had become too much for him, and control passed to the National Trust. It seems that this transfer was somewhat irregular financially. The talk finished with a series of pictures taken though the year which showed some of the garden’s floral highlights. Incidentally, with the help of those notes, the garden is maintained by 200 volunteers.

Shepshed History Society

Article written by Marjorie Schulz Mr Barry Newton was the entertaining speaker booked to speak to the Shepshed History Society on Tuesday April 9th at the Glenmore Centre, Thorpe Road. Barry then gave an amusing account of his life as a boy growing up in the village along with all his youthful escapades that he recounted in amusing verse. Like the time he and his friend crawled through a hedge and found a tantalising hole in the ground, promptly jumping into it, he soon found to his horror that it was really a cess pit that serviced the nearby lavvie (toilet). Much to his horror finding himself covered in effluence, he promptly dived into the cut to try and get clean. Understandably he was not very popular when arriving home that day. Many more amusing tales came forth and the society members went on to have a very entertaining and enjoyable evening. The speaker for the May meeting will be Anne Featherstone and her subject to be The Baby Murderer and the Watch Thief. Contact details if required, marjorieschulz@talktalk.net

Experience A Genuine English Country Fair: Visit St James’ The Greater, Oaks-In-Charnwood, Country Fair

Spring Bank Holiday Monday 27th May 2019 Article written by Joe Stanley

If you’re in need of some entertainment for the whole family this spring bank holiday weekend, why not come along to the Oaks in Charnwood Country Fair on Monday 27th May at St James’ the Greater on the Oaks Road, in the heart of the idyllic Charnwood Forest? There has been an annual event for the benefit of this magnificent church since the 1940s when garden parties were held on the vicarage lawn, attended by anyone who was anybody in the local community. This small and gentle affair has, over the decades, grown and expanded as it has become more popular with people from all over the area, and is now sited in the large field opposite the Oaks in Charnwood Tennis club. The popularity of the Oaks Country Fair continues to grow year on year, and its dedicated volunteers are always thrilled to welcome thousands of people through the gates every May. There’s plenty to see and do for all ages, including arts & craft stalls, vintage car & tractor displays, the church raffle, quad bike & fairground rides, face painting, archery, a maze, and country games such as skittles. There are always plenty of local businesses represented, and it’s a great opportunity to see what services are available in your area. Also visit the local history group tent, and discover the story of the Charnwood Forest. One of the highlights is always the Flower Festival in St James’ church itself, which was consecrated on the day of the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, and subsequently acquired a number of lances used that day in the Duke of Wellington’s victory, which are mounted inside. The floral decorations are created by the volunteers of the church, and are a spectacular centerpiece to the quiet, contemplative atmosphere inside – take a few minutes to relax away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – before the demonstration of St James’ bell ringers! A range of refreshments will be available throughout the day, including BBQ & hog roast, ice-cream, donuts, and of course the classic country fair cake stall, while a selection of live music will be heard. In addition, the ever popular Dog Show will be making a return (get your bookings in), this year presented by the doggy charity Apollos Angels; do you have the handsomest dog? Best puppy? Most adorable fancy dress? Come and find out for certain! Entry to the St James’ the Greater, Oaks in Charnwood, Country Fair is only £3 for adults, and free for under 16s with free parking available on site. The fair runs from 10:00-16:30, but why not make a weekend of it? Campers are welcome from Sunday 26th for a small charge of only £5. For all inquiries find us on Facebook at ‘Oaks in Charnwood Country Fair’, or contact oakscountyfair@shepshedandoaks.co.uk

Cllr Keith Harris

T: 01509 557701 E: cllr.keith.harris@charnwood.gov.uk Things are hotting up in Hathern as the village’s Hathern Together programme rolls out.

If this publication reaches you in time, you might like to try out the

Family Fun Day at the Anchor on May 6th. There will be free inflatables, live entertainment and family games. With the bar and food all day that’s perfect for a family Bank Holiday.

It was announced in the brochure that residents would be opening up

their gardens again for the weekend of May 11th and 12th but this has

been postponed till July and will now take place on July 6th and 7th. So please adjust your diaries. I did a tour last year and some of the hidden treasures are astounding.

On May 23rd there will be a History Walk starting at Hathern Cross. This is for everyone from vintage Hatherners to newcomers to the village, as History Society members will be conducting a tour of interesting

buildings with information and anecdotes. After 2 hours you may need a drink and the walk will almost definitely terminate at a public house! I will cover the vast range of events in June in my next article if I am

re-elected next week!! The Big Week begins then. The Hathern Village Association will be erecting marquees and fences the first weekend in June and would greatly appreciate any help you can give them, even

for only a couple of hours. Contact them for details of what and when if you can spare some time. As the first events will happen just after my next article comes out (if I get to write it!), I will give a heads-up

about the first events. The Big Week Launch Party will take place on

Friday May 7th at the Anchor featuring music by Hathern’s own cover band sensations Blue Horizon and will continue apparently ‘into the

wee small hours’. There will be a Youth Club Party on the same evening

(surely Martin Clayton isn’t going to rush from running this to being lead singer at the Anchor?!). Then on Saturday 8th there will be a Village Fete with another wacky It’s a Knockout contest hosted by the inimitable Ben

Hardy, a Hathern Brass concert, live music, bouncy castles, food vendors and the indispensable Pub in the Park. In the evening get your Stetsons and boots out for Country Rocks the Park, a barn dance featuring Hell on Heels and Reel Easy.

On Sunday 9th there will be a Big Village Walk, a BBQ in the Park and

a Cricket match where you can watch the ball flying constantly into the neighbouring field, hopefully only when Hathern are batting!

A band of walkers trudged 34 miles this month along the whole of the

Charnwood round and raised £2,000 for the library. The walkers ranged from 8 year-old James Sommerfield who not only walked the 17 miles

on one day but was running around exploring along the way to 75 yearold David Pilling who put us all to shame by walking the whole without a single complaint of aches and pains. Despite the length, it was a

delightful experience with entertaining and informative conversations forming all over the place. Not satisfied with this crazy stunt, some

participants have set up a walking group to practise for next year’s

WE CAN HELP WITH PLUMBING ENQUIRIES

event and to enjoy some (less strenuous) walks every 5/6 weeks. If you would like to join us, contact Martin Clayton whose idea it was.

I have loved being you councillor for 4 years and I hope that I will still be in office when you read this and can continue to serve the

community and take part in the huge range of activities and events in this extraordinary village.

Borough Cllr Christine Radford T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com

Due to the election only having just taken place we might still be your Councillors or not. But we were still your Borough Councillors until midnight on 6th May. We felt that we should still send a report of what has been a happening especially keeping resident up to date with planning applications. Planning P/19/0507/2 – 3 Abbey Close – Roof extension to facilitate loft conversion and insertion of roof lights to front and rear of detached dwelling. P/19/0517/2 – 20 Tetbury Drive – Proposed erection of detached garage in rear garden of dwelling. P/19/0661/2 – 26 The Meadows - Erection of conservatory to rear of dwelling. P/19/0696/2 – Coach Road – Pollarding of 2 Ash Trees. Planning Appeal P/17/2086/2 – 64 Brick Kiln Lane – site for the erection 3 dwellings following the demolition of garages and relocation of stables. This planning application was refused and the applicant has lodged an appeal. Garendon Park- Liaison Group On Tuesday 9th April the Liaison Committee for the Garendon SUE development met for the first time. Representatives from Persimmon, Wm Davis, Leicestershire County Council Highways, Thorpe Acre and Dishley villages, Local Councillors, County Councillors and Charnwood Borough Councillors for this area were all invited to attend. The meeting was chaired by Persimmon, who explained how the development would proceed. The first properties on phase 1 will start this year, just outside Hathern on the A6 and the new road will be started at this point. The second Phase 2 will be just outside Shepshed the A512 and will start in 2020. The new road on the A512 will be started late this year/early next with a roundabout which will also serve the new Science Park. After 1200 homes have been occupied the roads will join together to make the link between the A512 and A6. The meeting was informed that there is going to be a Community Centre, a Doctors’ Surgery and two primary schools, one near the A6 and one near the A512, There are also going to be some small shop units and industrial units. As we attend these meetings we will keep you informed of any news we may have, and any issues which may arise. Action Fraud Charnwood have received reports of people receiving text messages about council tax refunds. Charnwood would like to stress this is not from the Council and that they would not contact people in this way about any refunds. Charnwood do issue text message payment reminders to some people about council tax. Council Takes Action Against Drug Related Anti-Social Behaviour A flat in Loughborough has been served with a closure order after reports of drug-related anti-social behaviour. Charnwood Borough Council secured the order on the council flat and it means no-one, including the tenant, can enter the premises for a period of three months.

The orders aim to protect residents by stopping anti-social behaviour which has been taking place in or around a property. It comes after the Council received reports of drug taking at the property and upon investigation found significant evidence of drug use at the flat. Council officers worked with Leicestershire Police to gather evidence which enabled the Council to obtain the closure order at Leicester Magistrates’ Court. Tenants are responsible for both their own behaviour and the behaviour of visitors to their property. If serious nuisance is caused to other residents, closure orders can be used to prevent people entering the premises and stop the anti-social behaviours. If anyone breaches the order and enters the premises, they can be fined or face a prison sentence, depending upon the circumstances. If anyone has any concerns about anti-social behaviour, then they can contact the council on 01509 634666. Your Borough Councillors have supported residents who have had or are having problems with antisocial and shall continue to do so. Artists Appointed For Shepshed Art Project Charnwood Borough Council has appointed Derbyshire-based firm Sculpture Works Ltd to produce artwork for the Buttercup Fields development in Shepshed. Plans To Improve The Loughborough Carillon Museum A bid for around £60,000 of lottery funding to improve the museum at Loughborough’s historic Carillon Tower is being put together. Charnwood Borough Council is supporting the Carillon Memorial Trust, which operates and curates the museum, with a Heritage Lottery Grant application. It is hoped the bid will be submitted in the coming weeks and it follows a £282.000 conservation project carried out by the Council, with support from the War Memorials Trust, last year. It does mean that the tower will remain closed this year while the bid is made and if successful, it is hoped the internal improvements can be made in preparation for 2020. The regular carillon recitals will still take place and the museum will host open days to give people the chance to find out more about the plans and offer their feedback. People visiting the tower will also be able to meet with members of the Carillon Memorial Trust and Charnwood Museum. If successful, the funding will be used towards new display cabinets and more modern ways of displaying information. The museum will also have a greater focus on the tower, its history and the Carillon’s 47 bells cast as John Taylor’s Bell Foundry in Loughborough. The Loughborough Carillon is a grade two listed building and was built after the First World War to commemorate the men of Loughborough who gave their lives for their country. It carries the names of 800 men who died in both world wars and other conflicts. Construction was completed in 1923 and is 150ft high. More information about the Carillion and upcoming open days can be found at www.carillontower.org.uk

County Cllr Christine Radford T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com

As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges onto the highways/footpaths, social services etc. Charnwood Forest Regional Park I am vice-chairman of the Charnwood Forest Regional Park. We held a stakeholders meeting at County Hall on 5th April when presentations from the National Forest Company, Charnwood Borough Council and British Geological Society. The Stakeholders are putting together a report to submit a bid of £2.9m to the National Lottery Heritage fund. Charnwood Forest consists of Jubilee Wood, Outwoods, Beacon Hill and Bradgate Park which consists of 45 acres of Ancient Woodland (SSSI). It has a unique landscape there are 13,807 records held which found 528 different species (birds, beetles etc.) covering 11,117 ha. Woodland/grassland/heath/fens/bogs and open water. The presentation given by the British Geological went onto say fossils as old as 570m-540m years old have been found in the area. Some of these were named after the area Charnia Masoni and Charnioclicus. The talk given by the officer from Charnwood reported on events taking place at the Outwoods. The barn and play area will be open for Easter. Other improvements taking place will be a visitors centre and café in the old ranger’s cottage which is planned for early 2020. Other improvements to the car park, new pathway for users with limited mobility, improved access for non-car users, improve connectivity between the Outwoods and Loughborough by upgrading the paths and improve the connectivity been other sites such as Beacon Hill, all this is part of the application to the National Heritage Lottery fund. Charley Road Cross Roads This cross roads is one of the worst accident black spots in the County. I have had numerous meetings with officers at County to discuss what additional improvements could be carried out to make this junction safer. Rumble strips and give way signs have already been put in place; speed reductions are due to come in force. I have discussed changing the priority going across from Charley Road rather than down the hill. I also discussed traffic lights and a roundabout, but this was not supported by County nor the police. I shall keep speaking with County and the Police to see how these cross roads could be improved. A512/Ashby Road/Charnwood Road/Leicester Road Improvements There was due to be a public exhibition on these improvements during May, but this has been postponed until sometime in June. I will keep you all informed when I have a date. I have had a chance to look at some of these proposals and am very concerned that one of the proposals is to stop traffic leaving Iveshead Road and turning left into Ashby Road. The proposals are to make traffic cross over into Charnwood Road or turn right towards Loughborough. I am concerned that traffic from dwellings on Iveshead Road which wants to go towards Ashby will use Charley Road cross roads, which we know already is a dangerous junction. I ask residents if they visit this exhibition and they are also concerned about this proposal they could make a comment regarding this, together with other concerns they might have about the alterations/ improvements on the A512. Supporting Families in Crisis The County Council supports a Local Welfare Assistance scheme. The service has been developed from an application based model to one that now supports many more people through targeted referrals. The process is part of an integrated approach to assistance through front line workers and voluntary sector organisations that is coordinated under a partnership model involving all District Councils, Charity Line,

The Bridge Housing Services, Leicestershire and Rutland Reuse Network and Women’s Aid. Leicestershire County Council agrees with the benefits of this scheme and has committed to continue funding it. The Council’s budget for this work has a focus on supporting people with predominantly re-used furniture and white goods to enable them to move out of temporary accommodation, and access tenancies. The service includes providing emergency short-term food and fuel support to people in hardship and crisis. In addition the Service is complemented by preventative support focused on debt and money management advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau. Shepshed Re-Cycling Centre – Tip An up to date regarding the proposals of the closure of the tip for renovations. It is now scheduled for the end of June. If this date is altered I will keep you informed. Leicestershire County Council Forthcoming Events LCC hold events around the County on the 6th June they are at the Picnic in the Park, Loughborough, on the 15/16th June at Bradgate Park Wildlife Weekend, on both occasions it is regarding General Waste initiatives. Leicestershire Trading Standards Have received a report that local residents are being telephoned by an organisation claiming that their registration on the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) needs to be renewed and asking for payment details. The telephone Preference Service is a free service and is the official central register on which residents can record they do not wish to receive unsolicited sales or marketing call. To register with the TPS residents can call the registration line on 0345 070 0707 or visit www. tpsonline.org.uk. Trading Standards would like to remind residents not to give out any personal or financial information over the phone even if they are told this is to prevent them becoming a victim of scam or receiving unwanted calls. What to do if you get scammed? You can make an online report via Action Fraud by visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk or telephone 0300 123 2040. Stay Safe. Parcel Scam If you received an email which appears to come from the Royal Mail saying that you need to pay extra postage for a parcel before an item can be released for delivery, prompting you to open a link or document is doing the rounds. If you follow the line and provide details the email asks for credit card details, or call a premium telephone number etc. If you do get an email which you think is suspicious, you can always check whether it is a valid request by contacting Royal Mail’s customer services online or by calling it on 0345 7740 740. Advance Notice of a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) A TTRO is to be made for the following location. Ring Fence. The purpose of the TTRO is to allow County to undertake carriageway patching works. The TTRO will incorporate a temporary road closure. The duration of the restriction is not anticipated to exceed a period of 1 day commencing on the 29th May. Your Help Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such as overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess, inconsiderate parking (on pavements, yellow lines, outside of schools) etc., without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 502974 or e mail christine_radford@hotmail.com or christine.radford@leics.gov. uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road, 10-11am. No appointment is necessary.
