‘Art For Africa’ Art Exhibition At Shepshed Library Ray Mitchell is having an art exhibition at Shepshed library on October 14th for two weeks, about 3 years ago Ray went to Africa (Malawi) to be precise, on a project to build a maternity clinic. Ray travelled with a group of people who worked for the RBS in Shepshed at the time. They were there for about 3 weeks and when he returned some of the sites and people he had seen spurred him on to paint pictures, they are all oil painted canvasses of African pictures. With any money raised from any sales of the paintings Ray will make a generous donation to Joshua Orphan and Community Care, who he met in Africa, they have fundraisers and people who help out in both Africa and this country too, a percentage of any money made will go to this charity. The art exhibition is called Art For Africa, where Ray hopes to sell some paintings and be able to donate a substantial amount as Ray would like some of the money to go to paying for the children to attend school as currently after the age of 10 it costs ÂŁ38, per year, per child. These children have always got big smiles on their faces and Ray said it certainly opened his eyes.

Rotarians Support Teenage Cancer Trust Charity Members of the Rotary Club of Shepshed Charnwood welcomed Heather Bowen to their weekly meeting recently to tell them about the Teenage Cancer Trust. She explained that Teenage Cancer trust is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for the six young people, aged between 13 and 24, diagnosed with cancer every day. What is known is that they need to be treated together, by teenage cancer specialists, in an environment tailored to them and the charity is developing specialist units within NHS hospitals to do just that. Without these units, young people with cancer are treated along side children or elderly patients at the end of their lives, and being away from family and friends and a familiar environment is the last thing they need at this vulnerable time. Heather is Area Manager for Yorkshire and East Midlands and spends a lot of time fundraising for the Trust since it costs between £0.5M and £3M to establish a unit and the Trust is hoping to increase the number of units from the current 24 to 35. The Rotary Club has recently held a Paté & Pudding evening and raised £570 to be donated to the Trust. After the talk, Rotarian Richard Hornsby gave a vote of thanks. The Rotary Club meets most Tuesdays at the Best Western Premier Yew Lodge Hotel in Kegworth at 7.30pm and anyone is welcome to come to find out more about Rotary activities. Pictured on the right are, from the left, Rotary President David Fountain, Heather Bowen and Rotarian Richard Hornsby. The other picture shows guests at the Paté & Pudding Evening.

More BRAS needed in Shepshed! The Charnwood BRAS (Breastfeeding Reassurance And Support) group is recruiting more volunteer peer supporters to ensure every area of Charnwood is covered by their services. A training programme will be taking place and applications are particularly invited from women living in Shepshed where breastfeeding rates are low. The Charnwood BRAS group hopes to see an increase in the number of babies who are breastfed which will help to improve the general health and wellbeing of children, their mothers and future generations. The volunteers provide information, reassurance and support to parents and parents-to-be at every stage from pregnancy to weaning, through one-to-one support, a telephone helpline, breastfeeding cafes, antenatal workshops and returning to work sessions. There are about 20 peer supporters in the group who have all taken part in the La Leche League Peer Counsellor training programme. One of them is Caroline Rands from Shepshed. She says “The BRAS are a great team with people working together utilising their different skills to provide a varied service to other mums. It’s lovely to be able to support other mums even if it's just to extend their feeding experience by a day, a week or a month!”

Shepshed Business Forum members seeking views on establishing a local Chamber of Trade Members of the Shepshed Business Forum, set up by Nicky Morgan MP and Christine Radford, are seeking expressions of interest from local businesses on the setting up of a formalised Chamber of Trade. A Chamber of Trade, which is similar to a Chamber of Commerce, will hopefully provide a unified voice for businesses in and around the town. In other towns, Chambers of Trade play a key part within the local community. Members share business expertise and are actively involved in the development of their areas. Chambers of Trade are statutory consultees on items such as planning matters. They also often hold local events and get involved with charitable causes.

Joanne Talbot, part of the Health Visiting team in Charnwood, helps to coordinate the peer supporters and says “The current volunteers do an amazing job in supporting parents and parents-to-be but they do the work in their spare time which of course is limited when you have small children so we need more volunteers to ensure that as many babies as possible are being breastfed.”

Members of the Shepshed Business Forum are now seeking the views of all businesses in Shepshed on the idea. Businesses are invited to get in contact with local business owner, Andy Coughlan should they be interested. Anybody who wants to find out any more information, please email Andy at cot@trojansolutions.co.uk.

Find out more about Charnwood BRAS and becoming a peer supporter at www.charnwoodbras.co.uk or on Facebook or by telephoning 07583 041054.

Should there be enough interest; the aim is to have an exploratory meeting in the town at the end of November.

Lions World Sight Day and Eye Health Programme Lions Clubs International is recognised worldwide for its service to the blind and visually impaired. The Lions Eye Health Programme (LEHP) is a community based educational outreach programme that enables Lions Clubs to raise awareness of the leading causes of preventable and reversable blindness in the British Isles and Ireland - diabetic eye disease; glaucoma; macular degenerative disease; and all low vision diseases. Shepshed Community Speedwatch There was a planning meeting for volunteers to arrange their sessions for October on Wednesday18th September. There was also a training/ refresher session at Shepshed High School on Monday 23rd September. The Speedwatch sessions will start on Monday 30th October. All new volunteers are welcome to join us. The locations have all been risk assessed by the County Council so that the volunteers carry out their measurement in a place where motorists will not be distracted from their driving. Please ring Anne Glasper on 01509 505842 for more details.

Shepshed Town Team This group is made up of Town and Borough Councillors, business owners, landlords and residents. Borough and County Council officers also attend. We have Terms of Reference to which we work and at the moment we are trying to identify priorities from the Shepshed Town Centre Master Plan and Delivery Framework which can be accessed via the Charnwood website.

Our next meeting will be at 6.30 pm at the Town Council offices on 9th October. We shall be hearing from a planning officer at Charnwood about S106 Funding which is associated with benefit to the community from any large approved planning developments. Our aim is to improve the centre of Shepshed for shops and businesses and help attract residents and visitors to do some of their shopping and other activities in the Town. We are keen to help encourage events to draw families in to Shepshed and stimulate trade for the many busineses in the town. Sam Woods - Chairperson, Shepshed Town Team

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome you’ve given me since I took over from Carla. Many of you have already spoken to me on the phone to renew advertisement bookings, whilst others have met me when I’ve popped in to chat about the magazine. I am thoroughly looking forward to getting to meet more of you especially those of you who run community clubs and events. Advertising in the Community Eye magazines couldn’t be simpler, prices start from just £20 +VAT and that not only includes free design if needed, but also delivery to 7000 homes! If you would like to advertise as a one off or regularly (for which we have discounted rates) please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me, there is no contract and no hard sale! I would also love to hear from more community groups so I can ensure your events/clubs are featured in our magazine, if we get enough content we can start a What’s On guide. If you have a special event planned and would like me to pop along and cover the event for our next issue please call the office. Make sure you have a look at our Halloween and Bonfire special pages for information on events this month!

We meet at approximately monthly intervals and at our last meeting we discussed the planning application for a care home in Britannia Street. The Town Team have sent a letter commenting on the application to the planning authority and requesting that a representative be allowed to speak at the hearing.

Greasepaint Productions Present The Hired Man 'Loughborough theatre company Greasepaint Productions will be performing Melvyn Bragg and Howard Goodall’s masterpiece The Hired Man in October.

Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust North West Group

Set in Cumbria at the turn of the last century, The Hired Man is a beatufiul, poignant, harrowing and compelling slice of life in 1900s England, set against the backdrop of farming, the growth of unionised mining and the looming threat of war. A tale of love, loyalty, tragedy and human conflict in an emotional and physical manner, The Hired Man remains one of the best pieces of theatre written in the last 30 years. A recent success at The Curve in Leicester, the show is also timely as it comes on the eve of events to mark the start of World War One, an event which plays such a big part in this show. It is also especially poignant for Greasepaint this year is the 20th anniversary of their formation and their first show back in 1993 was The Hired Man, making this return to the piece all the more appropriate. Gareth Wynne leads Greasepaint’s cast as John Tallentire with Jodie Brackett as his wife Emily, Lottie Heimes as their daughter May and Daniel Kauss as their son Harry. John’s brothers Isaac and Seth are played by Rob Harrison and Gary Peake respectively while Alex Yorke takes the role of Jackson Pennington. Other support roles are taken by Charlotte Dolling as Sally, Neil Ledward as Pennington snr and James Daw as Ted Blacklock. Shane Perry directs while James Stevens and Hazel Needham are in charge of Goodall’s stunning score which includes numbers like No Choir of Angels, I Wouldn’t Be The First, Song of the Hired Man, Work, What A Fool I’ve Been, If I Could, Get Up and Go Lad, The Union Song and the awesome War. The Hired Man is on at Loughborough Town Hall from October 15-19th at 7.30pm each night, plus a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets priced £10-£14 are available from cast members, the town hall box office on 01509 231914 or online at www.loughboroughtownhall.co.uk

Shepshed Ramblers

The Shepshed Ramblers walk on the second Sunday of every month, departing Shepshed Market Place at 09.30am. The programme is decided at its AGM and the walks vary in length between 5 and 7 miles. The Group as well as walking monthly, has a weekend away in May and this year, had three days in Weymouth. The photo below was taken before starting a walk along the cliff tops at Portland Bill. The second photo on the right was taken during the July day trip to Great Windsor Park and shows the group enjoying an ice cream stop of which there were several on that very warm day. The Ramblers AGM is planned for 1 November at the Glenmore Centre. If anyone would like any further information about the AGM/walks, etc, please contact Bernie on 01509 828328 or Margaret on 01509 600510.

An Update from your MP, Nicky Morgan Earlier this month I had the pleasure of meeting the new Headteacher of Hind Leys College and Shepshed High, Matthew Parrott. As a former pupil in Shepshed Matthew already has a great understanding of the schools and I wish him all the very best. We had a good meeting discussing local and national education policies and their impact on schools in my constituency, including Hind Leys and Shepshed High. I had an opportunity to put some of these points directly to the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, when I met him a few days later. It was good to meet students from Hind Leys College last month who were taking part in the National Citizens Service residential week at Leicester University. They were all enthusiastic about their experiences so far and full of ideas for their forthcoming social action project to support Ashmount School. Supported by team leaders and organised in our area by the Leicestershire Education Business Company National Citizens Service is about getting 16 and 17 year olds to do something different with their summer holidays including meeting new people and gaining new skills.

The programme was described to me as “the best thing the Government has ever done” and a model of how cohesive we are as, a society, in Leicester and Leicestershire. It was a pleasure to see the genuine enthusiasm of all the attendees for the programme and how they wanted to encourage future students to take part. I recently visited Shepshed Water Mill to meet the owners and to hear their views on proposed developments around Shepshed and particularly their impact on flooding and nearby brooks and waterways. It was a very valuable discussion for me and I have raised the issues with Charnwood Council. I had already written to the Environment Agency asking them just how involved they have been with the preparation of Charnwood’s draft Core Strategy. Finally, I recently chaired a meeting with Christine Radford and Joan Tassell to explore whether a Chamber of Trade could be set up in Shepshed. There was enthusiasm for exploring whether there is enough interest to go further and formally set up a Chamber, so please look out for details of an event in the town to consider the next steps.

I continue to work on a wide variety of casework referred to me and my team from Shepshed residents. It is a pleasure to be able to help and to progress things where we can. If you think we can help please 01509 262723 or e-mail nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk.

BOROUGH COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN by Christine Radford My role as a Borough Councillor can be very varied and interesting, dealing with housing problems, neighbour problems or planning issues. Councillors attendance figures have just been released by Charnwood Borough Council, and I pleased to say that I had full attendance at all the meetings I am required to sit on. As vice-chairman of the Licencing Committee I joined the Police in Loughborough on Saturday evening, 22nd September, as part of their policing the night time economy. Alcohol plays a major part in a night out for many people. ‘Please drink sensibly and keep safe’ is the motto for the Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust North West Group

I found it very interesting to see the challenges of policing a busy town on a Saturday night. The police said similar activities go on in Shepshed, but of course it is not as busy nor with as many public houses to visit. Planning has taken up most of my time, with new applications on land off Hathern Road and even more off Tickow Lane and problems with approved applications where trees have been cut down following my asking that Tree Preservation Orders were placed on them. After my raising concerns at Charnwood, the Enforcement Officer visited the site run by Wm Davis, which is under construction at the junction of Anson Road with Tickow Lane and had the site Foreman cease work. As I have a print dead line to meet I will keep you informed of any future developments. I will work with residents and Charnwood to ensure that the developer complies with the conditions set out in the written planning approval when it is available. I was pleased to see the announcement in the last issue of the Shepshed Eye that the Labour Group would start to hold monthly Local Councillor Surgeries at the Town Council Offices. The Conservative Group Surgeries have been running for some 6 years now and are well attended. The additional Surgeries the Labour group are to provide should reduce our workload. I was less pleased however to read that Labour’s Cllr Claire Poole did not claim any travel expenses in (Quote) ‘her commitment to help the struggling taxpayers of Shepshed’. As one of the people who provide regular lifts to Cllr Poole I find it rather off-putting that she then seeks to make political capital out of the generosity of others. My husband and I provide the car I use for my Borough and County duties and I claim for the appropriate mileage. I am allowed to claim for the provision of lifts to fellow Borough and County Councillors but have never done so. Apologies for finishing on such a note but I do feel the better for it. I hold a monthly surgery in the Town Council offices with other Conservative Councillors from 10-11am on the last Saturday of every month except December. Or I can be contacted at any time on 01509 502974 or 07796 544817 or e-mail christine_radford@hotmail.com

Wins over Coalville 3rd’s, Long Eaton vets and Belgrave 3rd’s have given Shepshed good reason to be optimistic. News from Forest House Surgery

COUNTY COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN by Christine Radford As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal, with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. At a recent County Highways forum I brought up my concerns regarding the parking of motor vehicles outside of schools, when parents dropped off their children. I have parents raising issues with me that cars are parked on pavements, thus not allowing parents who walk their children to school being able to walk on these pavements. Cars are being parked in the zigzag areas which are not allowed legally. Please parents be aware that this is for both your child’s safety and the safety of other people’s children. At the same Highways forum a discussion took place regarding gritting, unfortunately winter is on the horizon. I asked that more roads in Shepshed such as school routes and bus routes be given greater priority. Shepshed is quite hilly, which does cause a problem for residents during bad weather. I am pleased to report that the Zebra crossing outside of Asda is now complete. It has taken over 2 years to get this to fruition. There have been over 7,100 responses to the County budget consultation, in which members of the public were asked which services should be cut to save money. When the results have been analysed I shall report back the outcomes.

I hold a monthly surgery at the Council Offices in Shepshed between 10-11am on the last Saturday of every month (except December). Or I can be contacted at any reasonable time on 01509 502974 or 07796 544817 or e mail christine_radford@hotmail.com

I am talking with officers at the County regarding the problems on Tickow Lane with the large Lorries delivering and returning from the Wm Davis development at the bottom of Anson Road near to Tickow Lane. This is the designated route which has been agreed by Leicestershire County Council, but I feel that Tickow Lane being narrow needs some sort of traffic management on it.
