Shepshed Special Community Bus News Article by Alison Sharp

What a great day had by all at The Summer Garden Party organised by Shepshed Special Community Bus and hosted by David and Christine Hallam. We were very lucky with the weather, the sun was shining, the birds were singing and we all listened to the beautiful sound of Brigitta Bognar on the Violin, we would like to say a big thank you to Brigitta and Neil for making this day so memorable, Brigitta said “It was a pleasure for us to be part of this nice afternoon, we really enjoyed it, if you need me anytime I am here for you”. One of the guests said to me “I will never forget today as long as I live”, these words mean so much to all of us on the Committee and this is the reason we do the things we do, not only to raise money for our new Community Bus appeal but to make the people who use our bus make everlasting memories. We bring people together that would not get out and about and do the things that we all so easily take for granted, this gives them someone to talk to, things to think about and independence. I would like to thank the Management Committee for all their hard work and support and also to all the kind people that came along to make the day a great one. We raised £318.00 towards our Community Bus appeal which now stands at £15,652.92. We also had a stall at The Shepshed Carnival organised by The Shepshed Lions on Glenmore Park on bank holiday Monday, again we were blessed with the weather, it was a marvellous day and well organised by all involved. We spoke to many people about the community bus and gave information out about the services we provide, we also raised £152.80 for our new Community Bus Appeal. Again I would like to thank everybody who helped make this day a great success and may all our good work continue. If you would like any information about the Community Bus please contact Alison on 01509 650531 or visit our Facebook Page.

Shepshed History Society Article by Marjorie Schulz

August 13th Shepshed History Society were taken on a picturesque and leisurely trip down the Grand Union Canal. Amid brilliant weather conditions members enjoyed a perfect trip out on a Peter Le Marchant vessel purposely adapted to take members of the public on scenic trips on the canal. The Peter Le Marchant charity that specialises in canal boat trips had its origins when the wealthy cheese making family from Colston Bassett, Notts, sadly lost their son Peter at an early age and as a tribute to his memory his sister Clare began this now famous charity that has given so much pleasure to countless people over the years. The trip went as far as the Waterside Inn at Mountsorrel where members enjoyed an excellent cooked lunch and on the way back they continued to enjoy the tranquil scenery and the outing was a great success. The Sept 10th meeting will be given by Mr Clive Katz, his subject to be 'Lindesfarne'. Newcomers are always welcome 7.30 to 9.00 at Glenmore Centre, Thorpe Road.

The meeting was opened, and the President welcomed the members along with our today's Speaker Sheila Bass, and a Lady visitor from S Africa. An explanation for the Lady visitor will be given later in tho account. Apologies were proffered from Fred Ing, and Ben Burton. Under the title of general business, the Secretary reported that the annual luncheon had been booked at the golf club, and that the entertainment had been booked. Stan White gave us a couple of amusing stories, but best of all, he explained the use of the word "UP", and gave us hundreds of examples. Grace was said before we were served with a surprisingly different meal, the difference was in the main course, when we were served with an excellent " Toad in the Hole ", even the Yorkshire Pudding part was superbly done. The raffle draw was made, but the winning ticket was temporarily lost, and the 2nd prize was gratefully received by the Past President. Internal sleuths finally found the winner whose ticket had been placed in the draw container accidentally, to the great relief by the winner. The Lady visitor Jenny Lewis, who was visiting relations in Shepshed, explained to us that she was the organiser of several areas in South Africa, and was responsible for visiting, and reporting back on the health of Probus Clubs in various S. African countries, and whilst visiting her relatives, why not check on Shepshed Probus. She was made very welcome, and she thoroughly enjoyed the visit, including " Toad in the Hole ", and we hope she will report back to her organisation in S. Africa, giving a positive report. Finally, our Speaker Sheila Bass gave us a very enlightening talk on her very many years connected with the Red Cross Organisation. She started with how she initially worked as a nurse, progressing to various training courses, and becoming more and more involved with the training of first aid teams, and assessing injuries following an accident. In order to understand conditions where accidents occur, she even went underground, and onto the coal face in a coal mine [Whitwick Colliery], also underground at a local Gypsum Mine, where she was invited and accepted a lesson in driving the Dosco continuous miner, in what she described as Cathedral like. She was then thanked by the President for a very interesting insight of The British Red Cross, and was applauded by the members.

Running Club Celebrate One Year of Parkrun Article by Ray Draycott

Shepshed Running Club have marked the first birthday of the Loughborough Parkrun by donating a full range of "pacer vests." Parkrun is a free to enter weekly event where participants can run, jog or walk a 5k course. There are now over 620 runs in the UK. The club has seen over 70 of its members complete 600 runs in the first 12 months. Chairman Richard Bibb said " Every Saturday morning our members turn out in all weathers. We have seen our own membership grow thanks to Parkrun, so we decided to donate these vests which will help all runners achieve their personal goals by running alongside a experienced volunteer" Details on how to register can be found on the Dishley Parkrun web site. To view a video go to YouTube Dishley parkrun, Loughborough 1st birthday. SRC also has a beginners night every Thursday at 7pm from their club hut next to Shepshed swimming pool.

A New Book Called Coffee & Cake Now Available At The Old Curiosity Bookshop & Tea Room In Hathern Article by Tina Walford

The newly published book by Stuart Hardy-Taylor called Coffee & Cake launched on Tuesday 27th August 2019 and was featured on Radio Leicester with a live interview from Stuart. This is the most hard-hitting, true story of drug and alcohol addiction and recovery you will ever read. Told in poems by an addict who was on the point of death, through his treatment and recovery process and into a new life.

Shepshed Toy Library Celebrates 35th Birthday Article by Catherine Tideswell

Shepshed Toy Library will be 35 years old on 6th September. The Toy Library started off at the Shepshed Town Council offices in 1984. Due to popularity it needed to expand, and since 1993, the toy library has operated in a portakabin on the Iveshead Campus. It’s the only remaining static toy library in Leicestershire including a stay and playroom with a qualified play leader. Over the years, Shepshed Toy Library has provided quality toys to thousands of families in Leicestershire and neighboring Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Our fees are low, and families can try us out for four months or enroll annually (using two types of fees). We also welcome schools, nurseries and child minders etc. They pay slightly more and are entitled to 8 toys at a time. Family memberships allow 4 toys to be taken for at least 3 weeks. We open Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 9.30am and noon during term time. We have a good selection of indoor and outdoor toys as well as story sacks, jigsaws, DVD’s and CD’s. The majority of our toy age range is from baby to age 4. We do have some games ideal for primary school children too. Our toys are mainly from quality donations. If you wish to donate please ensure that toys have a CE mark, ideally including a maker’s name with all piece’s present. We also offer volunteering and trustee opportunities. Places are available to give practical volunteering on Wednesday and Friday mornings. This could involve sorting, cataloguing and preparing toys. We also encourage those with learning difficulties to volunteer, so long as they are accompanied with a support worker. If you are not available during the mornings, how about becoming a trustee? We meet 6 evenings a year and you could help with grant writing/fundraising if you wish. Being on our panel will help make important decisions about our future. We have secured a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund which has been a real help. It is now entering it’s 25th year and has helped so many worthwhile causes. As Shepshed continues to expand, the toy library is ideal for your children’s needs. For further information please log onto https://shepshedtoylib.org.uk We also have a Facebook page.

Who should read this book? Anyone with any kind of addiction problem, their friends and family and all the Charities and Services who are there to help. Drug & Alcohol teams, Police & Prison Officers, GPs, Clinic & A&E staff, Paramedics, & Ambulance Crews. “Substances promised to help me escape from the things I suffered as a child, substances promised to comfort me in times of hurt and pain, they promised to help me forget life, BUT THEY LIED AND THEY NEVER SHOWED ME THE COST, FOR ALL THE TEMPORARY COMFORT THEY WOULD BRING. Addiction had ruled my life and through the denial and the walls I put up, I lost everything. It cost me, my wife, my son, my home and job and almost my life, but my addictions also had a terrible cost to my loved ones. Today I live an abstinence-based lifestyle and I am handling life on life’s terms. This book of poems depicts and informs you of how I have come to this place in my life today.” The title ‘Coffee and cake’ is how recovering addicts live their new life, meeting friends and support workers in café’s and coffee bars, instead of their previous haunts of pubs and drug dens. Tina at The Old Curiosity Bookshop, has been working with Stuart to publish his second book in time for his ‘4 years dry’ Certificate. As a previous Drugs & Alcohol Team Manager at Reading Unitary Council and at Wokingham Unitary Council, Tina says: “This book is a valuable training tool for staff working in the Health and Social Care sector, the Community Safety Teams and the Custody Suite Officers, who have face to face contact with people suffering from drug and alcohol addiction every day on our streets and in our town centres. It will help them to understand their state of mind, their patterns of behaviour and their limitations.” Stuart is now dedicating himself to travelling the length of the UK, speaking in Rehab centres, prisons, at training days, team meetings, seminars and Christian rallies. If you would like Stuart to speak at any event please contact him through his Publisher: Tina Walford, at: The Old Curiosity Bookshop, 115 Loughborough Road, Hathern, LE12 5HZ. Menopause Needn’t Mean Misery Article by Gary Trickett

Menopause generally occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 but in some women it can begin much earlier and in others, as late as 65. For most women there are three phases: peri-menopause, menopause and post-menopause. Hormone levels can fluctuate considerably during all three phases, resulting in hot flushes, night sweats, low mood, thinning hair, headaches, tiredness and loss of libido; and in the Western world it is estimated that approximately 75% of women are affected. Thankfully, there are a number of remedies that can help. Right at the top of this list is sage. One of our oldest medicinal plants, it appears to have a rebalancing effect on the hypothalamus, an area of the brain responsible for sweat regulation, amongst other things. When you go through the menopause the ovaries produce less of the hormone oestrogen and this drop in oestrogen causes the hypothalamus to work extra hard on maintaining hormone levels, upsetting its sweat regulating function. This causes sudden surges in temperature and the uncomfortable ‘hot flush’. Sage helps to correct sweat regulation and diminish hot flushes. Fresh sage tincture diluted in a little water three times daily can really help. Try Menosan Sage Drops or for extra oomph, Menoforce Sage tablets. Isoflavones can also help. Oestrogen-like plant hormones or ‘phytoestrogens’, isoflavones help to reduce hot flushes by providing an additional hormone boost when oestrogen levels are low. Popular food sources include foods made with fermented soya such as natto, tempeh and miso. In Japan, where soya is a dietary staple, fewer than 25% of menopausal women are reported to suffer with hot flushes. In fact, steering clear of what might be considered a typical Western diet of white flour (ie bread, pasta and rice), full-fat dairy, fatty meats and caffeine can help considerably. For further advice, visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester.

Shepshed Dolphins Swimming Group Afternoon Tea Article by Nicola Crowe

As part of volunteering week 1-7th June 2019 we wanted to celebrate Shepshed Dolphins Swimming Group as a volunteering led charity. Based at Iveshead Community Pool in Shepshed, the group has been running for over 30 years in various forms but with the main aim to provide, fun, pool activity and exercise for anyone with a disability or need. We run our sessions every Saturday 10.30am - 12.30pm, if you have a physical, sensory or learning disability, mental health or recovering from illness or injury then you are welcome to come along and swim. We have an Aqua Fit class at 11.15am with a qualified instructor which anyone can take part in. You don’t have to pay membership fees, it is £2.50 per swim and £1 for under 18’s. Our welcome desk and our committee of trustees are all made up of volunteers so we wanted to do something special to celebrate our dedicated volunteers and staff. We were able to get a donation from a local builder Taylor Wimpey East Midlands and The Quorn Country Hotel gave us the use of their Orangery room complementary to be able to host a celebration Afternoon Tea event. We were made to feel very welcome in the Orangery and the afternoon tea was amazing with all dietary needs catered for. It was also a lovely way to get together and say goodbye to one of our long-standing volunteers Claire Poole, who has volunteered for the last 10 years including the role of Chair of the group. We thanked Claire for all her hard work over the years to support and raise awareness of the group and we wish her well in her new venture and relocation to the coast. Tia Williams one of our Lifeguards has also worked with the group for a number of years and has now left us to study Fashion Design at Birmingham University, she will be missed by us all but we wish her all the best in her future. Taylor Wimpey East Midlands are currently building homes in Hugglescote, Coalville. The Afternoon tea was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by all the team.

Since taking control of the Town Council your Conservative Councillors wish to bring you up to date with what has been happening. Town Council meetings are always held on a Wednesday evening at 7.30 pm in the upstairs room and are open to the public. The new Chairman of the Council is Joan Tassell and her vicechairman is Ian Williams. The Chairman of the Estates and Recreation Committee is Christine Radford and vice-Chairman is Peter Grainger. The Chairman of Finance Bill Bebbington and his vice-chairman is David Northage. There are other Committees, such as the Dog control, staff, Risk and Governance, Football, Allotments and Projects (this committee looks at future proposals to undertake in Shepshed and therefore will have to precept monies to carry these out). More information next month in what we as a Council are looking to do. We also have a Grants Committee, as a Council we precept a certain amount to which local groups can apply for grants. We also precept monies each year for the Volunteer Bureau, Citizens Advise and Shepshed Special Community Bus. We sponsor events by paying for an advertisement in the Shepshed Eye. Town Councillors also sit on outside bodies to represent the Town; these are Domont Twinning Association, Glenmore Community Centre, Volunteer Centre, Citizens Advice Bureau, Town Team, Shepshed Special Community Bus, Biffa Liaison and Burgess Liaison. We also discuss any future planning applications, we write to Charnwood with any concerns we may have and have in the past sent a Cllr to speak against some of them at the plans committee held at Charnwood. We have had developers come to present their application to the Council before they submit it to Charnwood. The Council recently had a presentation from the Academy Proposers and discussed the proposal of a new school for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This school is intended to serve pupils between the ages of 7 and 19. It is envisaged that there will be approximately 80 pupils. This school will replace St Botolphs, St Botolphs will move into where the old High School used to be and Iveshead School will be extended to accommodate the increase in numbers in that building. This will mean that our children in Shepshed and surrounding areas will not have to travel far to get the additional supported education they need. Cllrs:- Bill Bebbington, Eric Chapman, Denis Forster, Peter Grainger, David Northage, Robin Popley, Christine Radford, John Savage, Paul Spencer, Joan Tassell and Ian Williams. The conservatives on the Town Council have raised concerns regarding the increase in the number of vehicles using the roads in this area and have asked the County Councillor to ask County to look in to their concerns.

Ride And Stride And Open Church Saturday 14th September 2019 Article by Maureen

PHOTO: Trophy presented to Debora Slingsby (right) by Chairman of Council, Cllr Joan Tassell (Left)

Winner of the Allotment Phil Cross Memorial Trophy Cllr Tassell said “It gave me great pleasure to judge the best Leicester Road allotment for the year. It was not an easy task, as so many deserved prizes int heir own right. The one I chose stood out as it encompassed everything in my mind an allotment should be. There was fruit, vegetables and flowers. All grown from seed earlier in the year. I wish Debora and Andrew all the best for the year ahead and hope they enjoy the fruits of their labours” Debora Slingsby said “Now into the second year of having an allotments, it’s been a great journey. Starting from scratch it gave me the opportunity to develop the plot, fully able to incorporate my own ideas, but also, with help and advice from my new allotment friends I have made along the way helped enormously. There’s still plenty to learn; it’s rewarding, very therapeutic and I’d thoroughly recommend it.”

Free 'Learn To Sing In Harmony' Course 2019 Article by Jan Hunt

Due to the overwhelming success of last September / October “ Learn to sing in Harmony “ course we are holding another course starting Monday 23rd September through October So come on why not be part of ' Learn to Sing in Harmony ' The free 'Learn to Sing in Harmony' course is being held by Heart of England Chorus at the Birstall Social Club, Wanlip Lane, Birstall LE4 4JS Aimed at both newcomers and those who have not sung for a while, the course is to encourage more men and women both young and older to take up singing, which is increasingly acknowledged as being an aid to a healthy lifestyle. There are many men and women who would love to sing but most never get around to trying, don’t have the opportunity or maybe are too self-conscious to give it a go but the simple fact is that just about everyone can sing. Attendees learn within a group which makes it less daunting, there are no embarrassing public auditions and it’s free! With the professional help of our Musical Director Ian Phillips participants will be helped to discover their voice, learn the techniques of making the most of it and how to use it in four-part harmony with others. There’s no need to worry about reading music as the teaching methods employed are designed to help quickly learn the speciallycommissioned song. For men and women who haven't sung for a few years this course is the perfect way to ease their vocal chords back into action. Regular singers may also find the course useful to learn different voice parts, in a relaxed and friendly environment. The course will run from 7-30pm to 10pm All the material will be provided with access to course teaching materials. P.J.Hunt Secretary 0116 2675 339 email: jansbolt@btinternet.com

Cllr Keith Harris

T: 01509 557701 E: cllr.keith.harris@charnwood.gov.uk No prizes for guessing what the main event in August was. The Hathern Village Association fought the elements to put on yet another brilliant festival. As if they didn’t have enough to do, they had to negotiate with the security firm and the council and managed to run the event on the Friday and Saturday evening after 45 mph winds all night and into the afternoon. Sadly, despite the wind dying down to a totally acceptable level by 5 on Saturday, many people decided not to attend. My 10 yearold triplets had a wonderful three hours and didn’t care about a bit of remaining wind. They went on the Sizzler and the Walzer, loved the lasers and the other activities in the Kids’ Arena, got churros and noodles, a drink at the stall run by the Community Library volunteers and saw the Zufflers. The Feeling finished off the live part of the festival with a storming set which made them probably the best headliners so far. Then a live disco went on after 11 in the marquee. There was a new system of collecting waste and the public responded enabling us to send nearly 100 bags to recycling thanks also to Serco. It was a great shame that the community didn’t support these heroic volunteers in the same numbers as in previous years. There is a lot of debate about how or even whether they can continue. The organisers put out live feeds showing all the aspects of the work put in by themselves and other volunteers. Many people responded praising them but we need many more to attend and support this fabulous local community and family event for which we should be very grateful. Let’s hope they are in a position to run the Fireworks in November. If so, can I urge everyone to support the event and persuade everyone they know to go too? Hathern Together has some events in store for September. I hope this Eye will hit your letterboxes by the 7th when the Anchor Inn are hosting a Karaoke evening in aid of Hathern Football Club. So all you wannabe Whitneys and pop anthem lovers should go and belt out the standards. Landlord Neal has threatened us all to have a go himself if enough money is raised. You have been warned! Tickets are limited to 40 lucky people for the Wine Walk (Crawl by the end) on the 14th. Four different properties this year are opening their doors and offering an insight into their history as well as a glass of fine wine. It is billed as a wine-tasting event but it looks more like wine-drinking to me. Four historical properties and four glasses of wine. What’s not to like? Tickets are £20. On Sunday 22nd from 10 – 4 there is a free event celebrating 700 years of farming at Oakley Grange Farm on Shepshed Road almost equidistant from Shepshed and Hathern. This will be hosted by the current farmers and by Circa 1265 a 13th century re-enactment group. They will have medieval food and you can see the Medieval Camp, alongside crafts, displays and activities. Hathern Community Library have been running the national Summer Reading Challenge during the school holidays. 36 children have already completed it, having read 6 books. A further 26 children are still ploughing through their last books. One of these, Elizabeth Dodds, hasn’t completed yet because she has chosen long books but she is determined to do it. There will be a presentation of the certificates to the eager readers at the school, most likely in the second week of the new term. My fellow councillor, Emma Ward, arranged a meeting with borough officers in Open Spaces in mid August to discuss the possibility of creating verges with wildflowers and bulbs, firstly in Dishley and then rolling out in other wards. I also attended the meeting. Dave Neville, Hathern Parish’s Tree Warden, attended to share his expertise with a view to establishing some verges in Hathern too. Adam Goodall, one of the officers is going to investigate possible sources of funding. We have planned a visit of sites to assess where we could plant. Dave has played a large part alongside the Church, the Parish Council and the Wildlife Group in the establishment of the four meadow areas, two in the churchyard, one in the cemetery and one in the park. Please visit these areas soon before they are mown in October and enjoy the flowers and count the wildlife species. The Parish Council has a new website at the same address : www. hathernparishcouncil.org.uk . If you have an issue to raise, contact any of the councillors. Or you could attend the next meeting at 7.30 on September 23 and raise it from the public area. The contact details of both borough councillors will be coming soon on a card to all houses in Hathern and are on the wall in Hathern Library with those of Betty Newton, your County Councillor. I help to staff Hathern Library every third Saturday from 10 – 12 (the last one on August 24). Sometimes residents come to consult me as a councillor. It is not a surgery but please free to come to see me. My fellow volunteer, Phil, will be happy to hold the fort while I discuss your issue.

MP Nicky Morgan T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk

It was a great pleasure to attend the Shepshed Lions Carnival on Bank Holiday Monday. This time the weather was almost too hot! But it was good to see so many people supporting the event and thank you to those running the Lions food stand for the delicious burgers! Congratulations to all pupils who received their exam results over the summer and I would like to wish them the very best for the next stage of their lives – whether they are continuing studies, starting an apprenticeship or a job or taking time out to think about what happens next. I’d also like to pay tribute to the parents, families and teachers who have supported all the students over so many years. And good luck to all those pupils starting primary school for the first time this month or moving on to secondary school. I hope their first few days and weeks go smoothly. The theatre at Iveshead School will be alive in early November with the sound of Gilbert & Sullivan. Christchurch Gilbert & Sullivan Society will be presenting ‘Ruddigore’ from Tuesday November 6th to Saturday November 9th. Performances are at 7.30pm during the week and 2.30pm only on the Saturday. If you’d like tickets, then please call 01509 504376. The Society always put on an excellent production and hopefully they will be getting good audiences. In my new role as Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport I can see just how important it is for every community to hold events such as these and the many, many other local events happening in Shepshed and Hathern which bring everyone together. I was delighted to open a new branch of Shepshed business TaxAssist Accountants recently. This new branch is in Loughborough and is the third branch for owner Carl Whitehead. Carl’s other office is in Long Eaton. It is always good to see new businesses opening and I wish them every success. Did you know that recycled aluminium cans can help to build a helipad? Cans can be crushed and smelted to form sections of a helipad for an NHS hospital. Having a helipad can help speed up the transfer of a seriously injured patient from the Air Ambulance. A can collection point can be found in the Glenmore Centre Car Park.

New Trim Trail Equipment At Oakley Road Playing Fields

Article by Brenda Snape

The installation of the Trim Trail equipment on Oakley Road Playing Fields was carried out last month and the advisory signs on how to use the equipment are temporary at the moment, however, permanent ones, are due to replace them shortly. The cost of the entire project £19,087.50 by a company called Lemon Jelly Leisure. It is constructed from steel, with a total of eleven items (plyometric boxes, trapeze rings, monkey bars, sit-up bench, balance beam, pull-ups, incline ladder, parallel bars, human flag, cross trainer and chain bridge) for use by youth and adults. The Projects Subcommittee had been considering a trim trail for sometime and it finally came into fruition this summer. On Oakley Playing Fields there is now this trim trail equipment, plus the BMX Track, Skatepark, Parkour, Zip Wire, Multi-Sports Game Area, as well as children and toddler play. A majority of the time, this area is a hive of recreational activity and is, also a popular route for dog walkers too, which is due to the close proximity of the surrounding countryside.

Cllr Christine Radford T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com

As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges onto the highways/footpaths, social services etc. A512/Ashby Road Improvements I presented the petitions regarding the proposal to remove the NO left turn from Iveshead Road onto Ashby Road and a second petition asking County to look at the white lines at the top of Charnwood Road which is causing problems to traffic leaving Gelders Hall due to queuing traffic. I presented the petitions to the Cabinet Lead member for Highways Cllr Blake Pain. If you wish to comment on the proposed alteration on the A512 the details are AMP@leics.gov.uk (Asset and Major Programs) or to view the plans go to www.leicestershire.gov.uk/m1j23 under supporting documents. Morgan Sindall has been appointed by Leicestershire County Council to deliver the M1 junction 23 and A512 improvement scheme. If you have any concerns about these works, please call 07779 417695 or you can email A512improvements@morgansindall.com if you contact this email you can ask to be kept informed and receive their monthly newsletter, if you signed up and have not received your newsletter please contact them again as they were unable to read some of the email addresses or A512dualling@morgansindall.com In the meantime Morgan Sindall will deliver letters to residents and businesses directly affected by night road closures. Other web pages you might find useful information about the works are: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/roads-travel/road-maintenance/m1junction-23-and-a512-improvement-scheme and details of any proposed diversions:- www.leicestershire.gov.uk/news/further-night-closuresplanned-for-m1j23-and-a512-improvement-this-week It has not helped that Severn Trent commenced works at the junction of Ashby Road with Epinal Way together with other works around the area. For future reference Severn Trent’s customer service number is 03457 500 500 other numbers you might find useful to keep a note of are:- Public enquires traffic management 07779 417 695 and to report problems such as fallen trees, blocked gullies etc., 0116 305 0001 X Roads – Charley/Iveshead By the time you have received this issue the road works at these cross roads should have been finished. I shall continue to monitor if the improvements have helped. I am sure that you will keep me informed should there still be issues. Notification Of Essential Maintenance Works M1 Junction 23 To Junction 23A I wish to inform you that Highways England will be carrying out essential maintenance work on the M1 between junction 23 and junction 23a on both the northbound and southbound carriageways. During the scheme Highways England will be:• Carrying out patching repair works to both carriageways • Reinstate road markings and traffic loops • Remove and replace the waterproofing layer on the West Meadow Viaduct Once completed, drivers will benefit from improved road safety and a smoother journey. Work is due to start on 23rd September 2019 and is scheduled for completion by the end of October 2019. Highways England said to keep to their programme for these works as short as possible and minimise disruption to the local community and road users, they will work: • Between 9 pm and 5 am, Saturday to Thursday (northbound carriageway) • Between 10 pm and 6 am, Monday to Saturday (southbound carriageway) Some Sunday shifts may be required. If you have any questions about these works you can: Email them at info@highwaysengland.co.uk or call 0300 123 5000 Advance Notice Of A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) A TTRO is to be made for the following locations; Tickow Lane, Hallamford Road, Belton Street, Oakley Road to allow

Core Special Projects to safely undertake highway improvement works in connection with the new development. The closures are programmed to proceed as follows: • Tickow Lane – closed from 28th October 2019 for up to 7 weeks • Oakley Road – closed from 25th November 2019 for up to 4 weeks • Tickow Lane, Oakley Road, Belton Street and Hallamford Road closed from 6th January 2020 for 4 nights. The above works should hopefully make this junction safe, which is something I have been campaigning for since I got elected as County Councillor. Proposed 50mph Speed Limit Order 201 Leicestershire County Council hereby gives notice that it proposes to make an Order under Sections 5 and 84 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. To impose a 50 mph Speed Limit on part of Ashby Road West, Tickow Lane, Charley Road, Sandhole Lane, Swannymote Road and Forest Lane in the Parish of Shepshed and Low Woods Lane. Gracedieu Lane and Ashby Road in the parish of Belton. A copy of the proposed Order together with a plan illustrating the proposals can be found at the Town Council offices or the documents can be viewed on line at www,leicestershire.gov.uk/roads-and-travel.carsand-parking.traffic-management-consultations All County roads that are assigned the national speed limit have been reviewed to identify those with an accident rate higher than the national average. As a result of this review Ashby Road West and Ashby Road, have been identified to have a total number of accidents above the national average. Therefore, in order to increase general safety and reduce the accident rate, the County Council proposed to reduce the speed limit from 60 mph to 50 mph. Police I was introduced to Mark Bott the new Charnwood NPA Commander along with Cllr Tassell, Chairman of the Town Council, and have recently had the need to contact him. I am very impressed with how quick he followed up my concerns and the concerns of residents which I had bought to his attention. Since his move to Charnwood he has set up a Neighbourhood Link this is a really effective way for the police to keep you updated. He is also working on reforming neighbourhood watch for Charnwood. Sgt Chris Wharton is leading on this. To sign up for the neighbourhood link contact www. neighbourhoodlink.co.uk/sign-up this is a free service. Police have recently reported that they ran a proactive operation around this area which resulted in 7 people being arrested, a number of cars seized and drugs recovered too and it targets county lines. Vehicle Crime The left of high powered vehicles is currently becoming an issue in parts of Shepshed. In partnership with Charnwood Borough Council some car key wallets are available at the police desk in the council offices; these will reduce the likelihood of the car being taken remotely without the key. This of course isn’t the only answer. I would please encourage you all to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police without delay. Action Fraud - Criminals Targeting People With Universal Credit Action Fraud has received 63 reports about a scam in which fraudsters target people with offers of “low cost” loans or “free” government grants. What the victims aren’t told is that the money they’ll receive is actually an advance payment for Universal Credit. The criminals use the personal information they’ve obtain under false pretences to make an application in the victim’s name. After the fraudsters have taken their “fee “from the advance payment, the victim is then left to pay back the total amount once their repayments begin. • Never share your personal or financial information with someone you don’t know and trust, especially if it’s in response to an offer of “free money” or a “free grant”. • Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) staff will never approach you in the street or ask for your personal/financial details over social media • If you have concerns about your benefits, you should visit www.gov.uk/ contact-jobcentre-plus • If you suspect your identity may have been stolen, you can check your credit rating quickly and easily online. You should do this every few months anyway, using a reputable service provider and following up on any unexpected or suspicious results. Temporary Closure Of Shepshed Waste Site/Refuse Tip The recycling and household waste site is to temporarily close on Monday 2nd September, so that essential maintenance work can be carried out. I did report this some months ago, this is just a reminder. It is expected to be closed for 12 weeks and will re-open on Monday 25th November. The closure will allow County to carry out necessary

drainage work as well as maintenance to other areas within the site. Local residents and permit holders wanting to use an alternative waste site during the closure can visit; • Loughborough RHWS, Railway Terrace LE11 1HW (SaturdayWednesday) • Lount RHWS, Nottingham Road, LE65 1SD (Thursday-Monday) • Coalville RHWS, Linden Way, LE67 3LA (Saturday-Wednesday) • Mountsorrel RHWS, Granite Way LE12 7TZ (Thursday-Sunday) Permits for the Shepshed waste site will be accepted at both of the above sites during the closure and kerbside collections will continue to take place as usual. To find the location and opening days and times for all 14 county council sites visit: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/waste Environment And Waste Service County intends to expand the current permit scheme to accept commercial style fridges and freezers and the acceptance of car tyres and hazardous wood for a small charge. The introduction of the additional waste streams should commence by the end of 2020/21. Re-Cycle Your Nearly New Baby And Toddler Event County are holding a Baby and Toddler Nearly New Sale on Sunday 29th September 10am -3pm at Beaumanor Hall. Buy and sell your baby and toddler clothes. Free entry or £15 for a stall. Children’s clothes, maternity clothes, prams, highchairs, cots etc. if you have any good quality secondhand children’s goods, there is no point them sitting in a cupboard, to book a stall call 01509 890 119. Sorry, no retail or businesses allowed, this is for a second-hand goods only. A 6 ft table will be provided for you. Don’t Let Your Recycling Go To Waste In caring for the environment, we all want to recycle as much as we can and Leicestershire residents are already recycling just over 45% of what they throw away. However, a number of incorrect items are being put into recycling bins, which can prevent good material from being recycled. Last year, 5,500 tonnes of material placed in recycling bins in Leicestershire was rejected due to wrongly recycled items, such as disposable nappies and food waste spoiling good quality recyclable material. Such as not taking out of the pizza box the uneaten pizza. In Leicestershire County deals with about 305,000 tonnes of waste a year and 55,000 tonnes of that is recyclable material of which there is a certain amount of contamination. As a county we are aiming to recycle 50% of all household waste by 2020. So, the less we contaminate our recycling the easier it will be to meet targets, reduce recycling cost and contribute towards a more environmentally sustainable place to live, and reduce the costs to you the tax payer. For more information on what can and can’t by recycled in your recycling bin or bag, visit www.lesswaste.org.uk Gully Cleaning County regularly empty and check the gullies around Shepshed, but should you have concerns regarding a gully do not hesitate to contact me. Following concerns raised by a resident who lives on the new estate known as Monastery Gardens regarding a gully on Iveshead Road near to the mini round about. Following an inspection by an officer where cleaning the blocked gully does not solve the problem the issue will be passed to a drainage officer for further investigation. I do follow up concerns raised by residents, even if I am not given contact details, sometimes it can take a while for the necessary works to be carried out, or in some cases officers cannot see a problem, it is helpful to have contact details so that I can keep you up dated with how things are progressing. Your Help Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such as overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess, inconsiderate parking (on pavements, yellow lines, outside of schools) etc., without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. If for some reason you do not receive your copy of the Eye one I now have my information posted on my web page at County. This will also help you to keep track on road closures etc. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 01509 502974 or e mail christine_radford@hotmail.com or christine.radford@ leics.gov.uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road, 1011am. No appointment is necessary.

Cllr Christine Radford T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com

We can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough Council. We deal with housing problems, (such as trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, Anti-Social Behaviour, whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property. We also deal with planning issues. Planning P/19/1514/2 – 101 Leicester Road – Proposed single storey extension to side and rear of dwelling. P/19/1087/2 – 77 Belton St – erection of detached double garage to rear of dwelling P/19/1493/2 – 23 Glenfields – two storey rear extensions to semidetached dwelling P/19/1223/2 – 62 Iveshead Road – demolition of bungalow (prior notification) P/19/1265/2 – 62 Iveshead Road – Construction of vehicular access to land at rear of the property following demolition of existing building (P/19/1223/2) P/19/1276/2 – 86 Ashby Road Central – erection of single storey extension to front porch, addition of two dormer windows to front elevation and erection of two storey rear extension to create first floor accommodation. P/19/1322/2 – 31 Garendon Road – Land to the rear of 31, erection of 10x dwelling including demolition of existing bungalow, associated access and landscaping works. P/19/1488/2 – 26a Garendon Road – discharge of conditions 3, 5, 6 and 9 of (P/17/1873/2) regarding boundary treatment, materials, and drainage and floor levels. P/19/1590/2 – 25 Leicester Road – T4, T5, T8, T10 beech trees – crown lift to 5.5m secondary branches only and dead wood; T6, T7, T9 Acers – fell to ground level. P/19/1652/2 – Ashby Road – Shell Garage, Premises Licence (Advice) P/19/1562/2 – Gelders Hall Road – Davey House – Installation of 14 floodlights to the building’s exterior and erection of security camera tower in the front car park. P/19/1681/2 – 31 Grange Road – erection of replacement single storey extension to rear of dwelling P/19/1446/2 – 7 Homeway Close – retrospective planning permission for gazebo in rear garden. Planning application 31 Garendon Road has been called in by the ward Councillor, Cllr Robin Popley – This means that the application has to be determined by the plans committee and not just by officers - Cllr Christine Radford has written in with her concerns even though this is not her ward. Cllr Radford had previously written, some 18 months ago to Charnwood Borough Council’s planning department asking them to carry out an environmental inspection of the site prior to the application being deposited, unfortunately this was not carried out and trees and the wild life in this area of land has been decimated. Cllr Tassell and Savage sit on the plans committee; therefore they have not entered into talks/correspondence regarding this application. Applications P/19/1651/2 and P/19/1650/2 are 2 applications for the erection of 2 Public Works of Art. This is part of a condition of the original planning application. There has been 2 public open days when the sculptor was available to listen to ideas and these have been taken on board. Cllr Radford and Tassell went along to his studio in Derbyshire to see his work which is made of aluminium and we were very impressed. New planning application – Woodlands Farm Shepshed, Oakley Road, no further information was available before the paper went to press. A new planning application for 204 dwellings will have been submitted to Charnwood. The application is on the site of the previous application approved in 2014 but just for 133 dwellings. The application will be submitted in outline form and reserve details such as final layout and specific house designs for agreement as part of subsequent future applications, referred to as reserved matters, except for two new vehicular accesses which are proposed from Oakley Road. We shall keep residents informed regarding this application. P/19/1699/2 – Land off Ashby Road West – residential development

of up to 210 dwellings, - this is down as advice, at the time of going to press we have no more information, but will as usual keep you informed. Make Sure You Are On The Electoral Register Thousands of forms have been delivered to ensure the borough’s electoral register is up to date. Every year the Council must check its electoral register is up to date and letters are sent to all households asking people to confirm the details or inform the Council of any changes. The aim is to make sure that everyone who is eligible to vote is registered and can have their say in future elections and referendums. If the information is not correct (if people have moved out or in to the property) then residents need to let the Council know as soon as possible so individual electoral registration forms can be sent to those who need to register to vote. It is a legal requirement to respond. The Electoral Registration Officer needs the information to be able to publish a complete and accurate electoral register on December 1st each year. Queens Park One of Loughborough’s beauty spots, Queen’s Park, has been awarded a prestigious Green Flag for the eleventh year running. The park offers visitors a beautiful green space including a museum, play area and the Carillon Tower. The Forest Road Green Belt Gardeners in Loughborough also received a Green Flag Community Award for creating and managing wild life areas in the town. The Green Flag scheme is run by Keep Britain Tidy and recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces in the UK and worldwide. Changes To Bulky Waste Service Confirmed Cabinet has agreed to introduce a £20 charge for each collection for up to 3 items. Charnwood was one of only a handful of authorities in England to offer a free collection for some bulky items from people’s doorsteps. The current bulky waste service costs around £105,000 to operate and introducing the charge is expected to generate around £60,000 a year. The new charges are due to be introduced in October. Council Targets Being Carbon Neutral By 2030 The Council backed a motion to aim for carbon neutrality by 2030. The motion also said it would work with residents, businesses and other public bodies across the borough and region to deliver carbon neutrality. The intention builds on the Council’s current work to reduce its carbon footprint which as seen the increase uses of LED lighting, energyefficient heating systems in its buildings and electric fleet vehicles. In 2015 Charnwood made a Carbon Pledge to reduce the Council’s carbon footprint by 15% and the Council is on track to exceed that. Behaviour change is just as important as investing in new technology. The latest carbon management monitoring report shows the Council has reduced its carbon footprint by 32% since 2012/13 thanks to using less energy, more power from more renewable energy sources and reducing waste. There is also a cost saving. In 2017/18, the Council spent nearly £139,000 less on carbon-related costs, such as energy and transport, than in 2012/13. Council Awarded For Work With Food Start-Ups Charnwood Borough Council’s food safety team won the Best Small Business Friendly Regulatory Approach at the Federation of Small Businesses’ (FSB) Leicestershire and Rutland Local Authority Small Business Friendly Awards. The award celebrated the Council’s business coaching project, created and delivered by the food safety team. The initiative gives new food businesses in Charnwood information and training to help them achieve the highest possible food hygiene rating when opening. As well as offering free advice and support, the project includes the delivery of a food safety course which gives new business owners the opportunity to achieve a Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering and offers people the opportunity to learn the basics of food hygiene. People who attend the course learn about legislation, food safety hazards, temperature control, food handling and principles of safe food storage. The next dates for the food safety course are October 24th 2019 and January 23rd, 2020. For further information please contact a member of the food safety team on 01509 634656 or visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/ foodsafety Monthly Surgeries We shall continue to hold our regular monthly surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council offices, Charnwood Road, from 10-11am.
