Standing room only as housing schemes are put in the spotlight It was standing room only at the Glenmore Centre on Friday 12th July when residents met to discuss proposals for hundreds of new homes off Tickow Lane. The meeting was arranged and chaired by Christine Radford to allow residents to see and discuss detailed plans first for the 85 homes on land at the corner of Anson Road and Tickow Lane and secondly to look at the proposals on other areas of land in the area. The William Davis application already has outline planning permission for the 85 homes, but has to submit detailed proposals before full permission will be granted. The full application is down to be considered at the August meeting of the Planning Committee at Charnwood. The consultation period was extended until 18th July to enable those residents attending the meeting to comment. Concerns were raised regarding flats being built in this area of Shepshed which those present did not feel was a suitable location. They were uneasy about the removal of some mature trees and hedgerows. No detail was available from either Severn Trent or the Environmental agency on how the sewage and rain water was going to be dealt with because there are already problems in this area. It was reported that of the Local Infrastructure funding (S106 monies), to be contributed by the developer £75,000 has been allocated for ‘A work of Art’ and £23,000 for Health. The Glenmore meeting also provided residents with the chance to discuss two larger developments, one from William Davis for 385 homes at the back of the Anson Road development between Conway Drive and Tickow Lane and one from Gladman Developments for 215 homes further down Tickow Lane at the back of Westroyd Care Home. Neither of these has yet been lodged with Charnwood. Roy Kershaw on behalf of the Garendon Park and Countryside Protection Group reminded those present that they had until July 22nd to get their comments in regarding the Draft Core Strategy to Charnwood Borough Council. Those present were advised of a group presentation to hand in the 4,000+ signature petition together with the GPCPG’s reply to the Draft Core Strategy on Thursday 18th July at 2pm. Unfortunately no officer or Cabinet Member was going to be present to receive the petition or documentation, much to the disappointment of those in attendance.

BOROUGH COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN by Christine Radford My role as a Borough Councillor can be very varied and interesting, dealing with housing problems, neighbour problems or planning issues. I chaired a meeting about the number of houses being proposed around Shepshed; which was well attended by Shepshed residents. (see separate report) I attended the meeting called by Nicky Morgan MP with Nicky Boles MP – Planning Minister - when a few Councillors and members of concerned group were able to put questions to him – see separate report – I had the privilege of being invited to have lunch with both Nicky and Nick Boles, when I was able to put other matters to him regarding issues just affecting Shepshed such as why cannot sites which are obviously going to impact on each other, such as all the developments on Tickow Lane, be considered together rather than piece meal. The infrastructure cannot take this amount of building and no thought has been given to school places, doctors or the environment. Flooding, drainage (both Foul and rain) have more of an importance where planning approvals are issued. I know as do the residents of Shepshed that this is a major concern around the Black Brook area. I spoke at the planning meeting on the 18th July when the detailed planning application for 66 dwellings on land between Brick Kiln Lane and Iveshead Road. The concerns I raised was that this area of Shepshed was unsuitable for a block of flats, the entrances to the right of way L11 was not clear due to the fact that vehicles might be able to enter it and the tree screening which I asked to have a condition that they be in place in perpetuity, but this was refused and just the usual 5 year condition was put on them. I hold a monthly surgery in the Town Council offices with other Conservative Councillors from 10-11 on the last Saturday of the month except December, or I can be contacted any time on 01509 502974 or 07796 544817 or e mail christine_radford@hotmail.com.

Shepshed Inner Wheel Club

LOCALLETTER

It was all change at Shepshed Inner Wheel Club at our July meeting. President Dorothy Watson handed over the chain of office to Pauline Bailey. Pauline outlined her year up to Christmas to members, this includes a monthly meal out, a monthly coffee morning. A theatre trip with lunch before and a visit to Chatsworth House in Derbyshire to see the Christmas decorations, as well as our monthly meetings with a speaker. A joint meeting with Coalville Club, and a coffee morning will be held in November for our overseas charity. Pauline's charity for the year is to be 'Homestart, Loughborough. Pauline also presented Lynne Atkin with the Honoured Active Brooch for the current year.

Dear Sirs I would like through the columns of your newspaper to put straight a misunderstanding which occurred on the ITV Central News on Thursday 18th July. The news item gave the impression that I was in favour of development of green field sites around Shepshed and the possible money for the re-generation of the town centre. The item was so edited that the foregoing comments were taken out giving completely the wrong impression. I represented Shepshed Town Council who are against any development and I made that very clear. My own opinion as a life long Shepshed resident also reflects the Town Council views. I have stood up at public meetings and written many letters against development in and around the town and am sickened to find that some people could even doubt my sincerity. For the past two weeks I have had meetings to do with planning and other Council matters every day. To be told I did a disservice to Shepshed residents is very upsetting. Yours sincerely - J Tassell (Mrs) Chairman, Shepshed Town Council

Shepshed BMX track Shepshed BMX track was originally built almost 30 years ago, in fact 2014 sees the thirtieth anniversary. The track was built by local BMX riders, who were all pretty young at the time & helped by their parents, fuelled by the huge boom in BMX back in the 80s. The track was mostly hand built using shovels and wheel barrows! Throughout the years BMX got less popular as other types of extreme sport came and went. Then in the 00s BMX finally realised its potential and was declared an Olympic sport, its fast paced and exciting to watch and showed millions of people worldwide how fun and enjoyable BMX is. In 2008, just after the Olympics I contacted Shepshed Town Council, who kindly put me in touch with 2 other individuals who like me wanted to bring the now overgrown and mud soaked track on Oakley Road back to life. Andrew & Kirk who helped build the track back in the day. We got together and working with the Town Council we got permission to fix up the track, a lot of help to direct us to some lottery funded local community sports and play area grants. Over the next few years, many applications and forms were filled out, permissions granted and a contractor was assigned. The track was designed by Kelvin Batey, who just won the Masters World Championships this July, wearing the rainbow stripes of the world champion is the biggest prize in all forms of professional cycling. The track was designed to fit in with the needs of the local BMX community, with some very big professional tracks in Derby and Nottingham, and many smaller play tracks, we wanted a full width and progressive track, meaning anybody can ride it safely and learn skills and progress their riding, rather than having jumps that are too big. Other features in our design were full site drainage and Tarmac berms (banked corners) to cut down on regular maintenance and also extend the life of the track through bad weather. Work on the track started back in early 2012, but during one of the wettest summers on record, we had to delay the completion as building during this period would have affected the quality of the track. Finally, in May and June this year we got the good weather that had been absent when we needed it most. The BMX track has been completed and the club is in the process of reforming. We will be holding a number of free skills courses on the track with Track designer Kelvin, these will be to improve BMX racing skills and general technique. Anybody interested should look out for news on our Facebook group.

Lobby of Charnwood Borough Council Offices Garendon Park & Countryside Protection Group (GPCPG) led a delegation to Charnwood Borough Council submitting objections to the CBC Core Strategy Plans. Around 70 Shepshed, Hathern and Loughborough residents demonstrated outside the Council Offices whilst Lynda Needham and Roy Kershaw (for GPCPG) and Cllr Diane Horn (for Shepshed Town Council) went in to present a 4,000 signature petition and 12 Reports objecting to various aspects of the Core Strategy. The documents were received by Richard Bennett, Head of Planning at the Council. The delegation was disappointed that Cllr Matthew Blain, Lead Member for Planning and Cllr David Slater, Leader of the Council, refused to meet with them. BBC Radio Leicester interviewed some of the protesters and reporters from the Loughborough/Shepshed Echo and the Leicester Mercury also attended the Lobby. GPCPG now has almost 1,100 members and Charnwood residents are continuing to sign the online petition. The aim of the Group is to persuade Charnwood Borough Council to change the Core Strategy so that houses are built on Wymeswold airfield brownfield site (an eco-village) and at Cotes (a garden suburb) instead of on the Garendon Green Wedge and countryside west of Shepshed. The Core Strategy Consultation closed on Monday 22nd July but residents can still continue campaigning by joining GPCPG on their website www.garendon.org.uk. The next big event will be in September when we hope to present a slideshow of photographs taken of the Garendon Green Wedge and the wonderful countryside around Shepshed to a Full Council Meeting.

An Update from your MP, Nicky Morgan Thank you to everyone who has written to me about Charnwood Council’s Core Strategy consultation. By far the biggest response I have had has been from Shepshed residents who feel very strongly that the housing planned in the strategy plus all the houses for which planning approval has already been sought and granted will have a hugely adverse impact on the town. I have sent all correspondence I have had in to the consultation along with my own response. And thank you to Christine Radford, Pat Murphy and Lynda Needham who came to meet the Planning Minister, Nick Boles MP, when he visited Loughborough recently. They were representing Shepshed Town Council, Shepshed Countryside Protection Group and Garendon Park Countryside Protection Group respectively. And they left the Minister in no doubt about the strength of feeling locally and the frustrations felt by residents. One of the issues which came out strongly from the meeting is that the Minister was keen to see areas such as Shepshed vigorously pursuing their own Neighbourhood Plan. Financial

support is available for this from the Government and I will be following this up. As the Parliamentary session ended for the summer recess we had two pieces of good news. We saw a fall in the national unemployment figures – in the Loughborough constituency this meant that there were now over 350 fewer Job Seekers Allowance claimants in June 2013 than a year earlier. Current claimants represent 2.8% of the economically active population in my constituency who are aged 16 – 64. And it was announced that nationally recorded crime had fallen by 10% in the year to March 2013 – and in Leicestershire it has fallen by 14%. Our police forces have shown an impressive ability to rise to the challenge of making savings while still cutting crime. The government has played its part by slashing red tape and scrapping targets to enable the police to focus on crime fighting. We have encouraged chief constables to make savings in back offices to give renewed focus on the frontline and we are seeing the benefits of those efficiencies. We have also set up a

College of Policing to ensure the police are better equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to fight crime. I continue to work on a wide variety of casework referred to me and my team from Shepshed residents. It is a pleasure to be able to help and to progress things where we can. If you think we can help please 01509 262723 or e-mail nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk.

Newcroft Primary School Children Visit Local Firms With the emphasis on maths and science, Year 5 children at Newcroft Primary School, Trueway Drive Shepshed have been able to visit three local Shepshed companies to see maths and science in action. The school has a maths collaboration with Meggitt in Shepshed with exchange visits to the school and pupil visits to the factory on Ashby Road to see the practical application of maths. Meggitt produce seals for the aviation and other industries. This term, children have also been able to visit Force Engineering on Gelders Hall Road to see the construction and operation of Linear Electric Motors; after a talk by Neil Foster, Managing Director the children saw how electricity and magnetism can produce motion. This was well demonstrated on Force Engineering’s test track where the children watched in amazement at the speed of acceleration and deceleration of the trolley.

Left to right – Isabelle, Robin, Zoe, Charlotte, Morgan, Ellie-Mae, Ryan with Alan Foster, Chairman of Force Engineering

Linear motors provide power to airport baggage systems, fairground rides and medical scanners and the children even saw electric motors being made for despatch to China. At Campbell Scientific on Hathern Road, the children learnt about weather measurement and recording for airports and in extreme weather conditions such as Antarctica and in the desert. After an interesting science talk from Steve Severn, Managing Director the children went on a tour of the facility and tried a range of measuring experiments. Mr Phil Goulding, head teacher at Newcroft said that ``these visits are really important to show the children how maths and science has an interesting application in industry and helps us teach those subjects in the classroom`` Mr Bill Gilmour, chair of governors expressed appreciation to the local firms who hosted these visits and would like to thank Alan and Neil Foster at Force Engineering, Dick Safell, Steve Severn and Paul Whitmore at Campbell Scientific and the staff at Meggitt. This local support for a Shepshed school is marvellous and helps to inspire and educate the children and who knows, may even sow the seeds for a future budding mathematician or scientist``!

Glenmore Park Looks Stunning In The Sunshine The pictures show flower beds in Glenmore Park and a family enjoying the new toddlers play area.

LOCAL LETTER To Whoever It May Concern:I am currently a local Shepshed resident, brought up here as a child and educated here. Now, I know things have to change, but these housing plans are surely quite extraordinary? It is already a nightmare to drive in Shepshed, something that I avoid whenever I can. The town's narrow central roads are clogged with cars - both parked and moving and are quite inadequate for our current needs even now. It is the Tickow Lane proposals which I find most disturbing. That far side, sloping down towards the brook, (where kids still fish for tiddlers, as I did as a child,) and into the beautiful countryside, has always seemed sacrosanct, peaceful, untouchable, 'green belt' -is this an extinct term now? Has anyone looked at those fields lately? A vision of green; lazy yellow rape; thick red poppies; wild flowers - with all the accompanying insects, birds and wildlife that we are supposed to be protecting. Tickow Lane is just that - a country lane - not even a white line down the middle - already the traffic is increasing daily, because we avoid the town centre wherever possible. How can it possibly cope with all these extra houses?--do you estimate, as most of us do, that that means hundreds more cars? All with their only exit onto Tickow Lane? It also means hundreds more people; and as no new jobs, schools, doctors, or shops, seem to feature in anyone's plans, it is hard to see how everyone will exist. We already have virtually no shops in Shepshed beyond our two small supermarkets, most small traders have long since vanished. I recently attended the 'Public Exhibition' by Gladman..... who? I'm sure this fulfils some necessary legal requirement. But where were the people we needed to talk toCharnwood councillors, the landowner, the developers, where were you William Davies? where were you Mr DeLisle? Venting our feelings on someone from Cheshire who does not know where Tickow lane is, and has certainly never been to Shepshed before, is next to useless for us. Unfortunately I suspect that the Gladman thing is their protection from being face-to-face with the people who will have to live with it all.

All Change At ‘The Shepshed Eye’ Firstly we would like to welcome Miriam to the team, as from September Miriam will be in charge of looking after ‘The Shepshed Eye’. Miriam will be out in the community most days talking to a whole range of groups, clubs and advertisers, we are confident Miriam will take ‘The Shepshed Eye’ to the next level covering even more local events and local news. Delivery date! The Shepshed eye will now be delivered on the second week of each month, with all articles and adverts in to us by the 1st of each month. Next issue will be Monday 9th September, with all articles and adverts in by 1st September.

Mr DeLisle may well consider that he needs the money. William Davies has to earn a living and make a profit. But at what price here on Tickow Lane? Will they be available and responsible to sort out what may well result in chaos? Will they pick up the pieces when you finally push we Shepshed residents to far? Things may indeed have to change. But some things shouldn't. Please, do not change that green and pleasant land beyond Tickow lane. Leave us some beauty to enjoy? You may well get brownie points for building lots of houses Charnwood Council, but surely not all these need to be in Shepshed? You are pushing us with the plans you have already authorised. This last lot, proposed by Gladman, might just be a step too far. Sincerely, Christine Sneddon.

Borough representatives met with Planning Minister Nick Boles MP On Friday July19th several representatives from around the Borough met with Planning Minister Nick Boles MP, & Nicky Morgan our Local MP. Representing Shepshed was Christine Radford local Councillor, Patricia Murphy from the Shepshed Countryside Protection Group and Lynda Needham from the Garendon Park & Countryside Protection Group. The main thrust of issues raised by the Shepshed team were as follows;; The hundreds of dwellings that have already been approved and the many thousands being promoted by Charnwood Borough in the local plan are unsustainable and will double the size of Shepshed. We would lose all public rights-of–way into open countryside. The National Planning Policy Framework (2012) is a developer’s charter that has developers in England sitting on 400,000 unused planning permissions, yet choosing to land bank building their balance sheets rather than build homes. Brown field first policy is not effective because councils fail to encourage the reuse of redundant buildings as developers prefer open countryside. Hence Shepshed is taking up the slack. In England there are enough Brownfield sites for 1.5 million homes

most of the councillors in position to make decisions living on the other side of Loughborough, which suggests NIBYISM on their part. . While some spoke of small housing developments that were rejected by CB planners then later approved on appeal by an inspector, we reiterated that only one in Shepshed went to appeal and most developments in Shepshed are approved regardless of size. Sustainability not being considered when deciding planning applications was a major cause of concern. Economics appears to take priority over the Environment and the closeness to schools and Shops etc. One thing is certain people power is important. CBC lack of a five year housing supply was impacting on Shepshed, because the lack of a 5 years supply is for the whole of the borough, in other words Shepshed is being used to make up for those areas that have not had or have had a minimal development approval. One point that was agreed by the majority of those present was that many developers subsequently reneged on the S106 (Infrastructure contribution – such as shops, schools etc) agreements contained within their planning permission. If developers cannot be trusted why should they be given further planning approvals. We await the Ministers actions with interest.

Charnwood Borough has not been proactive in supporting local councils that have shown an interest in developing a neighbourhood plan. However, on the day of this meeting, all parish and town councils will have received information on neighbourhood planning.

There were many more issues the Shepshed team wanted to raise, as did others, but unfortunately time was against us. However Nicky assured us that we could pass these onto her, which we intend to do.

Shepshed is labelled as the largest settlement outside of Loughborough, yet we are under represented on the Council with

There was a consensus of agreement that no one had any confidence in Charnwood Borough as our Planning Authority.

Can you be nifty with a fifty? Groups and companies are being challenged to get nifty with a fifty to raise funds for an East Midland’s children’s hospice. Organisations across the county are being encouraged to sign up to the Accumulator Challenge and support Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, which provides specialist care and support to children from across the East Midlands with life-limited illnesses. Teams that take part will be given £50 and encouraged to turn it in to as much cash as possible over three months. Katie Baxter, community and events manager at Rainbows, said: “We give you £50 and during three months we ask you to raise as much as you can for Rainbows by whatever means you like, as long as it is safe and legal. “Your challenge is up to you. There are so many different things that people can do from staging an Afternoon Tea to sitting in a bath of baked beans or holding a fancy dress event to organising a quiz night. “Taking part can help to strengthen team spirit, provide great PR opportunities, demonstrate social responsibility and help Rainbows to be there for children and families facing the most extraordinary challenges. “Our team of experienced fundraisers can also provide advice and tips to make your fundraising go further and promotional tools such as posters and collecting tins are also available.” Rainbows is looking for teams to register before the Accumulator Challenge launches on Monday 2 September. The Awards Ceremony will be on Wednesday 22 January 2014 at The Yew Lodge Hotel, Kegworth, where the awards for the most money raised, the most innovative idea and the Judge’s Choice will be handed out. Rotary Club of Shepshed

For several years the Rotary Club of Shepshed has worked in close collaboration with interested schools in Shepshed to assist in the development of writing skills. The primary schools which feed Shepshed High School, hence the inclusion of Belton Primary school, have enjoyed and valued the opportunities. The opportunity is available for all schools which serve the children of Shepshed. Each primary school has ten entrants from year 5 and these ten are judged by a teacher from Walsall, a friend of the club’s president, which ensures impartiality. Likewise at the High School ten entrants per year group are selected . All the entrants receive a certificate and a Rotary notebook with the winner of each group receiving a £10.00 note. We look forward to extending the scheme, in a modified form, to Hind Leys College, from the beginning of the next academic year with a specially donated trophy. Various members of the Rotary Club of Shepshed are seen in the attached photos presenting the awards at end of year special assemblies

PEOPLE OF SHEPSHED ARE YOU REALLY AWARE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING TO YOUR TOWN? At the moment we are threatened by the following housing developments, all of which are either actually passed, or proposed; Oakley Road Iveshead Road Hathern Road Iveshead Road Tickow Lane Mannheim Site Tickow Lane Crowson Close Tickow Lane Jolly Farmer’s Lane

133 houses 66 3,500 24 215 79 85 9 385 5

In addition to this total of 4,501 houses there are discussions imminent to extend the Oakley Road development much further, as far as the Grace Dieu Brook, added to which, further land is also available for purchase by developers along Tickow Lane. I ask you where will this end? We also have at least one traveller’s site to fit within the boundaries of Shepshed . ITV Central News broadcast on Thursday 18th July from Tickow Lane, showed a protest by more than 100 residents, feelings are running high.

Ask yourself how many extra cars this number of houses will bring with it, the ‘main’ roads cannot cope now, especially when people are trying to get to work. No matter how much talk there is of regeneration of the town centre, and it is only ‘talk’, the roads can never take more traffic; therefore these developments must not take place even though they are part of Charnwood Borough Council’s Core Strategy. I am pleased to report following months of working with the new owners and Charnwood Borough Council that these flats which have been a concern of residents will soon be occupied by tenants. The stumbling block was not contaminated soil as the rumour went but following the problem of the original builder going bankrupt the new owner with my support managed to renegotiate the S106 agreement. To enable the new owner of these flats to keep control of all of them a sum of money has been provided so that a bungalow can be built on Longcliffe Road in Shepshed, as far as I am concerned it is a win win situation. Road hauliers next HMRC target in Loughborough, warns expert

Loughborough MP encourages local residents to sign up as Dementia Friends

Road hauliers in Loughborough are the latest target for HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) a local expert has warned. Phil Marriott and Carl Whitehead who run TaxAssist Accountants in Loughborough said: “Road hauliers in Loughborough can expect spot checks and intensive scrutiny of their records over the next few months. HMRC’s latest taskforce is focusing on the haulage industry across the Midlands, as part of a national campaign. The Midlands taskforce says it expects to recover £3.5 million in taxes.

Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan is encouraging local residents to become Dementia Friends; a scheme which will give people suffering with dementia a helping hand in their daily lives. A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it's like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action - anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend. From helping someone to find the right bus to spreading the word about dementia on social media, every action counts. Dementia Friends is a national initiative that is being run by Alzheimer's Society. It's funded by the Cabinet Office and the Department of Health. Nicky Morgan Commented: “People suffering with dementia can sometimes need a helping hand to go about their daily lives and feel included in their local community. Dementia Friends is giving people an understanding of dementia and the small things that they can do that could make a difference to people living with dementia. “That is why I’m supporting this scheme, because together, we can create dementia friendly communities.” Anyone interested can sign up as a Dementia Friend on the www.dementiafriends.org.uk website. Leicestershire residents are invited to attend Dementia Friends information sessions. All the details can be found on the website.

“Provided they have all the right procedures, records and proof of income and expenditure in place, Loughborough hauliers can protect their legitimate earnings and show the tax inspector the door.” TaxAssist Accountants Loughborough is a local business, operating across Loughborough and the surrounding villages, providing tax and accountancy advice and services purely to small businesses.

Consumer Campaign in Leicestershire Charnwood CAB is organising a consumer campaign in Leicestershire to raise people’s awareness of the unfair practices of rogue traders and explain to people how they might be conned. It is hoped we can give people the opportunity to talk about bad experiences that have happened to them or someone they know and find out how they can prevent such a thing happening in the future. Anyone can fall victim to rogue trading but often it is the most vulnerable who are targeted. The campaign will take the form of road shows in market places and shopping centres, and smaller events for community groups across the county. If you belong to a group and would be interested please do contact the Campaign Co-ordinator, Jude Warrior, on 01509 221228 or email cac@charnwoodcab.co.uk. More details can be found on our website – www.charnwoodcab.org.uk

Statistics Show Crime Reduction In Leicestershire Loughborough MP, Nicky Morgan has welcomed the latest release of crime statistics for Leicestershire by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) showing a 14% reduction in the annual recorded crime rate for the county. The statistics produced from the Police recorded crime figures for the year ending March, 2012 show that Leicestershire had the 3rd highest annual rate decline of 14% throughout England and Wales. The percentage decline in Leicestershire is double that of the national average, where the figures produced by the ONS show a 7% reduction in recorded crime in England and Wales. Significantly, the ONS statistics show recorded crime is down by over 10% under this government along with an independent survey showing public experience of crime is at its lowest levels since records began.

** STOP PRESS ** I wish to let residents know that there is going to be yet another application for more houses on land behind that already approved on Oakley Road. There will be a public exhibition on Wednesday 7th August in the Town Council Offices on Charnwood Road, between 10am – 7pm, and again on Saturday 24th August between 9am-4pm. I understand that the applicants are going to give a presentation to the Town Council and to the Town Team on Tuesday 6th August at 6.30pm in the High School. I am not aware of how many or what this involves but I can assure you that as soon as I know anything I will keep Shepshed residents informed. Please attend one of these exhibitions on the 7th or 24th, do not be afraid to ask questions, so that you can then voice your concerns when a planning application is submitted. When a planning application is submitted I shall again hold a public meeting to enable residents to discuss the application. Cllr Christine Radford

SPECIAL

OFFER

Responding to the publication of these statistics by the ONS and the independent Survey on public experience of crime, Nicky said: “I am absolutely delighted with the findings of the ONS, demonstrating the fantastic work being done nationally, and particularly in Leicestershire by our hard-working police, to tackle crime. “These figures should give the residents of Leicestershire and those who spend time in the county real faith in this Government’s ability to bring down crime and make our streets and property safe from the devastating effects of crime. “These statistics in no way mean the job is done or that further reductions are inevitable and therefore we as a government along with the police will continue to work tirelessly to bring these figures down even further. “

If you became seriously ill or incapacitated who have you appointed to look after your affairs? It is important that you appoint somebody that you trust to do this for you whenever you are unable to do so now or in the future.

Whilst you are fit and well you normally have no problem going about your normal everyday affairs. But what if you were to be injured and became incapacitated as a result; or what if you became seriously ill? Who can now look after your financial affairs? Many people think that their spouse, son or daughter could: and it often comes as a shock when they discover they cannot. These things become even more self evident when someone is no longer of sound mind, e.g. Alzheimer’s or a coma. This is not the time for loved ones to find out that they have little or no power. Your bank accounts can be frozen (even joint accounts in some cases) and other investments can become difficult to access. Unpaid bills could start to pile up simply because nobody has the LEGAL authority to act on your behalf.

However there have been enquiries from some people about an additional class in the afternoon and a free taster session is to be held on Thursday 5th September at 2pm at Livio's Italian Restaurant in the Hall Croft, Shepshed.

Success Is Failure Mike Hughes and Sheila Cullinan of Twenty Twenty

An unusual quote for a Loughborough-based organisation that is far from a failure. Mike and Sheila gave Shepshed Charnwood Rotary Club a fascinating insight into the workings of the aptly named "Twenty Twenty" charity – no, not the cricket, but the clarity of their vision in helping hundreds of disadvantaged and disengaged young people to move forward in their lives. Mike explained that, for the young people they work with, failure - not coming up to the mark in school, coming from a tough estate, having a poor self image and low aspirations, etc - is something they try to help them turn into strengths. When a young person shows the desire to achieve a better life regardless of their background, then the whole Twenty Twenty team are inspired, hence the maxim "in failure lie the seeds to success". Sheila expanded on the history of the group, explaining that the charity was set up in 2007 to carry on the work started by Kings Church in Loughborough, and has since expanded with Life Skills Education Centres, Love 4 Life girls groups and a country wide youth mentoring service. They would like to do much more but, as with all charities, resources are limited, so if you think you can help Mike and Sheila in their work (training as a volunteer mentor or fundraiser especially), or need further details, then visit http://www.twentytwenty.org.uk. or call 0300 111 2020. Rotarian David Hayes thanked them both for a thought provoking evening and wished them well for the future. The club is always interested in new members so please either visit our Face book page or website (Search Shepshed Charnwood Rotary Club), alternatively join us on Tuesday night 7.30pm at the Best Western Yew Lodge in Kegworth.

Nicky Morgan MP supports Guide Dogs' call to keep pedestrians safe from silent menace Nicky has supported Guide Dogs’ call for the installation of a vital safety feature on quiet hybrid and electric vehicles to keep pedestrians safe, by attending a reception at the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday 26 June. The Loughborough MP was amongst the large number of Members of Parliament who backed the charity's call to install artificial noise generators on quiet vehicles. Research shows that some quiet vehicles cannot be heard until one second before impact and, in certain conditions, are more likely to be involved in a collision with a pedestrian than conventional vehicles. Guide Dogs held the reception, where Transport Minister Norman Baker spoke, to highlight the charity’s concerns about the safety implications of vehicles that cannot be heard.

Bumper cycling event to be held in Loughborough A free bumper Big Family Bike Ride is to be held in Loughborough this summer. An actionpacked day including cycling stunt displays, mystery treasure trail rides and free cycle maintenance sessions will take place on Sunday, August 11th at Loughborough University. The Big Family Bike Ride has been organised by Leicestershire County Council to encourage more people to enjoy getting around their local area on two wheels. Events will take place at the Students’ Union from 10am – 3pm on August 11. Other activities include the chance to have a go on a “crazy bike, race toy cars with pedal power and make a refreshing drink on the smoothie maker. Peter Osborne, county council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “This should be a really fun, action packed day and we hope as many people as possible will join us at the festival, get involved in what is a healthy pastime and explore Loughborough’s cycle network. Accompanied bike rides will take place in the morning to the event from Shepshed, Barrowupon-Soar and Quorn. These leave at 9.30am and will return from the Students’ Union at 3pm. Pre-booking for these, and the Dr Bike maintenance sessions, is essential – to do so call 0116 3053179 or email ETDCentraladmin@leics.gov.uk For more information on activities and meeting points for accompanied rides visit: www.choosehowyoumove.co.uk

NEXT ISSUE OUT Monday 9th September 2013 Advert/Article Deadline: Tuesday 1st September 2013

Nicky said: “I realised when I did my blindfold walk with a guide dog in April 2012 just how important it is to be able to hear vehicles. I welcome this campaign and will be raising it with Department for Transport Ministers. James White, Guide Dogs' Campaigns Manager, said: "As the number of quiet vehicles increases on our roads, we need to ensure they are safe. Blind and partially sighted people rely on the sound of an engine to cross a road safely. If you can’t see or hear a car then how do you know it is there?

FILMREVIEW

COUNTY COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN by Christine Radford

The Heat - 15

As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal, with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Since being elected as vice-chairman of the Fire Authority I have been very busy getting around and enjoying it immensely. I attended the mass demonstration when Central News was in Shepshed on Thursday morning 18th July to show my support together with representatives from the Town Council, Shepshed Countryside Protection Group – I was a founder member of this over 30 years ago – members of the Garendon Park and Countryside Protection Group and many residents, to let Charnwood Borough Council know how the residents of Shepshed are against all the proposed developments on land around the Tickow Lane. As County Councillor I have written to Charnwood Borough Council outlining my concerns about the Draft Core Strategy regarding its soundness or lack of it. More useful telephone numbers for you, Adult and Community General enquiries is 0116 3050004, if after your initial enquiry you do not have an answer then the follow up number is 0116 3056465. General Highways 0116 3050001, if no response after a couple of weeks then the follow up number is 0116 3056227. I am working with residents and the police, to try to stop the speeding cars around Shepshed which then go into the car park on Glenmore Park causing concerns to residents who live locally. Residents have asked just how much has the County saved by switching off some of the street lights so far the County are saving £800,000 and this is before all the lights that were earmarked to be turned off have been. I have spoken to the Police and in fact crime has not increased and I was informed that the majority of burglaries take place between 12noon and 3 pm when people are out at work. I hold a monthly surgery at the Council Offices in Shepshed between 10-11 am on the last Saturday of the month (except December). You can contact me by e mail on christine_radford@hotmail.com or by telephone on 502974 or 07796 544817

The Heat is a highly hilarious and totally nutty cop comedy from the director – and one of the stars - of Bridesmaids. Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is a high-achieving special agent who is, however, much disliked by her colleagues in the force. Paired with Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), a brutish, unprofessional and totally rude agent, the two are not looking like a particularly impressive team but they need to pull themselves together if they are going to catch a dangerous Russian mobster. The Heat introduces the whole new dream team of Bullock, McCarthy and director Feig.

Planes - U PLANES is a fully-charged adventure set high above the clouds. Dusty (Dane Cook) dreams of competing in the most exhilarating round-the-world aerial race in history. There are just two minor issues: he’s afraid of heights and he’s not built for racing. Despite his fears, and with a hefty dose of encouragement from his mentor, a seasoned naval aviator named Skipper (Stacey Keach), Dusty goes on to qualify, but will he overcome adversity and the attempts by the champ, Ripslinger (Roger Craig Smith), to put an end to his dreams? PLANES introduces an hilarious fleet of new characters sure to delight the entire family.
