Put On Your Dancing Shoes And Don Your Crazy Hats – The Official 70th Anniversary Of Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland Has Arrived, And Everyone Is Invited!

Protecting Your Family Inheritance

Article by Cristie Herbert

Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually.

It's not only the Queen who is celebrating a 70th Anniversary, Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland has their own BIG year ahead and it all starts with an official launch, 7-Tea Party & Dance at Clarence House and everyone is invited.

But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT).

On Thursday 7th April, Clarence House on Humberstone Gate will see the arrival of all things ‘Wonderland’, with a special 7-Tea Party and Dance for some incredibly special VIP guests.

A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries.

The event will take place to celebrate all the vital support the charity provides and has given for 70 years across Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland to individuals, families, and communities. We could not be prouder! Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland are excited to launch the main headline campaign of 2022, ‘Mad Hatter’s 7-Tea Parties and not only will it be the theme for the launch, but the charity is asking the people of the city to hold their own 7-Tea Parties in aid of the people of the city. Mums, dads nans, gramps, and friends of all generations are invited to help us celebrate this year's 70th Anniversary by holding your own 7-Tea Party with tea, cakes, and create incredible crazy hats. Schools, nurseries, colleges are also encouraged to think about their family members and make a difference with a celebratory 7-Tea Party. We even have a special ‘Do it for the Fam’ Campaign for students to get involved with a special challenge in aid of family members. The year when Queen Elizabeth came to the throne in 1952 was also the year that Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland (formerly National Old People's Welfare Committee (NOPWC), then Age Concern Leicester 1972 and subsequently Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland 2010) started to provide exceptional support for local older people living in the city, county and Rutland, and they haven’t stopped since. Not only have they been supporting the people of Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland for 70 years, but they have also grown to be the largest independent local Age UK in England. The demand for their services has grown exponentially since 1952 and they are tremendously proud of their achievements, especially during the last 2 years when they’ve been a lifeline for thousands of local older people. If you’re planning a Platinum celebration in 2022, then why not raise some money along the way? Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland will be launching their year of celebrations throughout 2022 on their website and social media pages (Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / LinkedIn) plus you can also request the ‘Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland Mad Hatter 7-Tea Party’ fundraising packs. For more information or details about Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland’s Platinum Anniversary, please visit www. ageukleics.org.uk email fundraising@ ageukleics.org.uk or call 0116 299 2233.

Our frontline staff follow Government guidelines for visiting you in your home and they are fully vaccinated. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you.

As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

• 300g frozen peas • 400ml lamb or beef stock • 2 level tsp gravy granules Method Preheat your oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas 6. With a sharp knife, make small incisions in the top of the leg of lamb and push the rosemary sprigs and slices of garlic into the slits. Put the lamb in a deep roasting tray. Place the whole rosemary sprigs and the halved garlic bulb around it and season with black pepper. Cover with foil and roast the lamb for 45-60 minutes, or until tender. Meanwhile, boil the potatoes in a large pan of lightly salted water for 8-10 minutes and drain. Boil the carrots for 5 minutes. Place the potatoes on a non-stick baking tray, season and spray with low-calorie cooking spray. Remove the foil from the lamb, and roast for a further 20-25 minutes. At the same time, roast the potatoes on the shelf above the lamb for 30-40 minutes, until crisp and golden. Add the carrots and shallots to the potatoes after 15 minutes. Meanwhile, steam the soya beans and peas for 3-4 minutes and keep warm. Transfer the lamb to a platter and leave it to rest for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, boil the stock and gravy granules for 4-5 minutes until slightly thickened. Divide the lamb, veg, gravy and potatoes between 4 plates and serve.

Als Electronic Shepshed Experience Article by Allan Dobb

Well here we are in APRIL already, and longer days. I have just marked the first two years of this pod casting lark. I started in the last week of march 2020 during the first lockdown, when I produced video diaries for family and friends. This was a way to share with others what’s happening our end of the pandemic. Over the media we shared, poetry, piccy’s, birthdays and things in general. I posted these gems by e-mail address which took a good thirty minutes to send. During the pandemic we have all had to change our minds about the media platforms with Zoom, You tube and the like, plus our phones were the only way to keep in touch. If you have an Apple iMac then that provides other accesses to to world outside. Photo booth in which it is possible to transfer your files onto Facebook and the rest, and how I started my project off, is free at source. To promote the project, ‘Al’s Electronic Shepshed Experience’ I set up a Facebook group page, this enables me to share other businesses and charities and post them to my page. I also do a daily missive, comments on this and that, Monday to Friday, but this allows me to promote what’s happening in Shepshed, and surrounding areas. Although Shepshed is what the podcast is about, it could include other areas locally if there was an interest. What I didn’t expect was the wonderful and friendly people that I have met through the interviews completed, and that continues on a weekly basis. The aim is to promote local musical talent and that is with Jim Robertson and Mark Bradbury, who sing for us most Saturdays. Although I’m the face of this project, the people are the stars who embrace the Shepshed community and share their time with others. If you have any project you would like to promote please contact me on Facebook messenger or to allandobb@yahoo.co.uk Any promotion needs time at least a month, the day before gives an idea no traction what so ever. Also if you need any more information about this podcasting lark, I am prepared to come and speak with your organisation. To promote the community is at the heart of this project and there is a long way to go with it. Community belongs to all of us and we all have a part to play. At the heart of every thriving community are Volunteers and they are so valuable. As I go round the local organisations, the main concern is staffing, volunteers are at the lowest they have been for some time. I know that the pandemic hasn’t helped, but in other ways this could be an open door for new people with new skills to come forward. If after reading this you think you might be able to give two or three hours, then the Shepshed Volunteer Centre is a good place to start. Jayne who runs the centre will be on hand to talk to you and guide through what may be needed, Jayne spoke to me on the Saturday Podcast some weeks ago and I filmed the Well Being Garden at the rear of the centre. Contact number for the centre; 01509 508040 and it is open 9am-12 midday. Do make contact with any organisation they will be please to hear from you. Back next month Al..

Get Your Lawn Ready For Summer With warmer, longer days on the horizon, the beautiful bright colours of your garden are best enjoyed alongside a lush, green lawn. As the centrepiece of your garden, GreenThumb Lawn Treatment Service will ensure your lawn reaches its full potential as a weed-free, healthy, and well-loved lawn. Our ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment is applied between April and June and features a fully coated fertiliser designed to give your lawn a timed release of nutrition over several months, feeding your grass and stimulating growth. This sophisticated treatment also includes a weed control to help eradicate those which are unwelcome on your lawn, keeping your lawn looking its best ready for summer. An added benefit of our ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment is that you’ll also receive an application of our fantastic water conserver, Oasis. Now is the perfect time

for an Oasis Treatment as it helps your soil to make the best use of any available moisture, meaning you’ll need to water up to 80% less. Our popular Oasis Treatment now features an innovative, highly concentrated seaweed extract which has proven to have an almost immediate visual effect on the colour of your lawn. At this time of year, we also recommend implementing a regular mowing regime to help your lawn be the best it can be. Dry, sunny days are the best conditions for mowing, however it’s important that your mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. It is also important, especially during the summer months, that your grass isn’t cut too short as this will weaken it, attracting unwanted weeds. When dry, we advise raising the height of your cut from 1” up to 2” and give it a good drink the day after mowing. Let’s create the lawn we both love. Contact your local GreenThumb branch today 0116 269 4019 or email leicestershirewest@ greenthumb.co.uk

Shepshed Lions Expanding! Article by Lynn Jackson

This month Shepshed Lions responded to the request from the Shepshed Toy Library for help with the cost of their Easter craft activities. Lion Secretary Bon Irish presented Catherine Tideswell with a cheque for £600 during a visit to the library. (pic 1)The Toy library is extremely impressive being full to the brim with toys for children of various ages all packed ready to take away in attractive containers and bags. It’s a wonderland run by some very enthusiastic people. We have also put Thornton’s Easter Eggs in some of the pubs. Buy a ticket to see if you can win one for the family. We attended the Volunteer Fayre in the library at the beginning of March where we met other organisations who are also helping the people of Shepshed, which means we will be able to work together to do more to help the community. This month also we were highly delighted to welcome 2 new members into our club. Both people have been Fosl’s and helped with the Carnival and Santa Sleigh amongst other things (pic 2). Becoming a Lion member is not expected from the Fossl’s but it is wonderful when it does happen. So don’t forget if you’d like to help us and by extension the community of Shepshed by becoming a Fossl or want to know more about them and the Lions, then don’t hesitate to get in touch. (Lynn Jackson 01509 822452).

Borough Councillor for Hathern

I was intending to announce triumphantly that Hathern Together is planning to deliver all the normal events for their extended Big Week, which is now more like Big Several Months. That should still happen despite the million Covid cases a week. Let’s hope we will be past this worrying peak by the time the events begin in early June. Then we will be able to enjoy the usual delights of Open Gardens, Big Quiz, Proms in the Park, It’s a Knockout and many more. Our lovely little library celebrated its sixth anniversary in March. Thank you to all residents who attended and made it such a successful and enjoyable occasion. The parish council renewed its agreement to fund the library on the day. We had a tombola, cake sale and a book sale, which raised £400 for the Ukrainian relief effort. I would like to thank Simon Kondrat for the entertaining and enlightening talk he gave on nanotechnology as part of Science Week. We all enjoyed it greatly and many interesting questions were asked at the end. We were celebrating our victory to save the hedgerow near Daisy Bank. I have since heard that William Davis intend to cut and lay the hedge to give the new residents a view! Just when we thought we had won the argument that the hedge needed to stay, we find that they want to reduce a 20 foothigh hedge to a few feet of manicured stumps. The argument apparently is that the hedge will grow back. This is nonsense on many levels. The present habitat would be destroyed and the hedge would be cut back again when it reached a height deemed by whoever is managing it to obstruct the precious view. I am sure that many of the new residents would be horrified if they found out that this was done for their ‘benefit’. It is annoying that this should emerge after the consultation has expired. I will speak against this at the committee meeting and hope that the members will agree to impose a condition that this cutting should not be carried out. Residents can still complain to the developer. They may listen to us if enough voices are heard. This week I made a site visit to the listed building 19 the Leys with the parish chair, an officer from CBC and the builder of the new Leys houses. We discussed how to take the restoration forward and we hope that the owners will soon decide to carry it out or sell the property and allow someone else to do it. Hathern Football Club continue to win matches convincingly and are using their games in hand to climb up the table. Well done again, guys. I will come to a home match before the end of the season. After the refurbishment, Hathern Club is thriving with live music every weekend and a quiz once a month (with another quiz at the Dew Drop once a month). Why not form a group and join in the fun? The last few quizzes have been very tight with a single point dividing the winners from the rest. There has been a lot of discussion recently about re-siting dog/rubbish bins. As CBC will not install new bins, we have to consider re-siting. There are three bins between the Cross and Gladstone Street and one near Wesley Close. We need one in Daisy Bank. If you have a view on this, please write to me and/or the parish councillors and we will try to sort it out. The main reason that the new Covid variant is spreading so fast and pushing up hospitalisations so worryingly is the waning of immunity. The second booster rollout has started. The Southfields centre will be closed when you read this but the over 75s and the vulnerable can get a booster at a surgery. Please get your booster as soon as you are eligible. You will be contacted by your GP practice.

Member of Parliament

Regular readers will be aware of my ongoing interest in the ‘energy from waste’ incinerator currently under construction near Junction 23 of the M1. I have frequently raised concerns about air pollution, once the facility is fully operational. This is something I have raised in the House of Commons, and with Ministers, specifically in relation to the amount of fine particulate matter (otherwise known as PM2.5) that will be released by the facility. Levels of pollution are tightly regulated, and environmental targets were set out as a key commitment in the Environment Act last year. The Act requires the Government to set targets to levels of PM2.5. The Government are currently consulting on these targets and are seeking the views of people on what these targets should be. I would encourage all residents who have concerns about the PM2.5 levels to take part in the consultation, which closes on 11th May 2022. The consultation can be found here: www.consult.defra.gov.uk/natural-environment-policy/consultation-onenvironmental-targets In the meantime, I will continue to monitor the situation at this site and work with local residents to try to ensure that any pollution is as low as possibly be. I love getting out and about, listening to views of constituents. One of the most important things I undertake as an MP is my regular surgeries. I hold regular one-to-one surgeries throughout the constituency, as well as supermarket surgeries, such as the one I held recently in Shepshed. It was great to chat to so many Shepshed residents whilst they were going their shopping. Thanks to all those who have raised issues with me. I am sure, like me, you have been you have been shocked at horrendous the situation in Ukraine. Putin’s illegal war has rightly been widely condemned by the international community as well as here at home. I fully support the Government in its efforts to help the citizens of Ukraine to defend their homeland and to assist those who are in need. As ever, the generosity of the local community here in Shepshed and Hathern has been second-tonone. As it was during the pandemic, yet again local residents have stepped up to the plate, and I have been heartened to see the community come together to organise donations of clothes and essential supplies. I’d like to thank everyone in Shepshed and Hathern who have helped, and of course those who have donated to the cause. If you want to help, donating to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Ukraine Appeal remains one of the most effective ways to do so. Donating via this method is safe, secure and will ensure that support goes to the front line as quickly as possible. The easiest way to donate is to visit the DEC website: www.dec.org.uk/appeal/ ukraine-humanitarian-appeal As ever, if I can be of any assistance on any issue, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Christine Radford County Councillor for Shepshed T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com Spring is truly here, snow drops have been and gone and the daffs are dancing in the warm sunny days and gardeners are getting the grass cut and vegetables planted. I am dealing with a number of issues, such as over grown hedges causing problems to residents being able to walk on pavements and blocked gullies. I am attending regular briefings at county and recently ones regarding how we can support the Ukrainian refugees. County have set up a small group to deal with how this can be achieved. I have been supporting requests from residents in answering any questions they may have about how they go about housing these people. Full Council – 23rd February Most of the meeting was taken up with the Medium Term Financial Strategy (MTFS). I spoke as Lead member for Adults and Communities about the growth in demand for services, such as the increased numbers of service users and number of high cost care packages, in particular those related to older adults and learning disabilities. This amounts to £35m over the next four years. The overall number of service users being supported across Residential Care, Home Care, Supported Living, Direct Payments and Community Life Choices from January 20320 through to October 2021 has significantly increased. Typical growth would be approximately 1-1.5% per annum, however the current number of service users supported shows growth of around 5%. I went on to mention other facts resulting in overspend of this financial year. I expressed my thanks and gratitude to officers of the council and all those who work in adult social care across the county for their continued dedication and commitment in the face of significant adversity. Book-inspired art work created by children in care showcased at exhibition An exhibition of artwork created by children and young people in the care of Leicestershire County Council went on show at a pop-up gallery in Highcross Leicester, from 30th March until 24th April at the former EE store in the upper Mall, opposite the Apple Store. I did manage to visit the exhibition and found it very enjoyable and interesting in seeing the books they had read. The exhibition and the year-long project that led up to it was devised and led by the county council’s Participation team, working closely

with colleagues in the Libraries and Fostering teams. A total of 54 youngsters between four and 18 chose a book they enjoyed and then created and artwork inspired by the book. Anyone interested in finding out more about fostering are asked to visit www.fosteringleicestershire. com or call 0116 305 0505 Carers Please find below information on the carers support groups provided by Voluntary Action Leicestershire. There is a group in Loughborough which meets on the fourth Monday of each month at Gorse Covert community centre 2.30-4 pm. An online evening group is 4th Wednesday at 7 pm – 8 pm and for those who have signed up for a carer’s passport you can get a free drink at the Meet and Eat cafe in the Hall Croft in Shepshed. You can find other information on their website www.supportforcarers.org I hope you find this information useful and please remember as a carer you must look after yourselves as well as those you are caring for. Shepshed Library Shepshed library is now fully operational in Smart (customer selfaccess mode). The doors have had an enhanced locking system added which should hopefully prevent any further unauthorised access to the building. The library is fully operational so is open its full preCovid opening hours. Shepshed Cancer Support Group The group is now meeting at the Glenmore Centre in Thorpe Road the 2nd Tuesday of the month between 1-3pm. Please join them for a drink and a piece of cake on 12th April. Volunteer group shortlisted for national museum & heritage award A group of women who have been working with Leicestershire County Council since 2019 to share their South Asian culture, stories and memories with diverse audience across the county have been shortlisted for a prestigious national volunteering award. The stitching Traditions exhibition and the ongoing project leading up to and following on from it has been a revelation, both for the women of the Anand Mangal group and the museum professionals who worked on it with them. They are up against five other volunteer groups and individuals, with the winner being announced on 12th May. Pupils and staff move to new school after flagship St Botolphs school revamp

12 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news

Pupils and staff are settling into their new state-of-the-art premises which include two libraries, a science lab and an art studio. I joined the Cabinet Lead for Children together with the Director for Children on a tour and was amazed at the change and how colourful the school is now. The former High School building has undergone a renovation and remodelling to make it suitable for younger children. The school has been brightly decorated throughout. It also boasts two halls, two fullsized rugby pitches and outdoor play equipment. The new school will now be able to gradually increase places in the next six years from 280 to 420 pupils, before increasing further to 630 in the following few years. At the time of the proposed refurbishment I did ask that the vehicular access to the site be improved, but unfortunately this did not happen. Illegal Encampment on Fairway South Regarding the recent Traveller

Encampment over the weekend of 19th March. I am pleased to report that the police acted very quickly in getting them removed by the 22nd March with a Section 61 Public Order notice. The police operation was successful and temporary measurers via a local haulage company having allowed two of their HGV trailers to block the car park entrance to prevent further issues. The police kept the residents of Brendon Close informed during this incident. Your help and support – my contact details Without your help in keeping me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, I would not be able to do my job. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 01509 502974, or 07796 544817 or e mail christine_radford@ hotmail.com or christine.radford@ leics.gov.uk , my monthly surgery, is held on the first Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road, (opp. Tesco) You do not need an appointment; I will be there from 10-11am.

Vitamin C And Why It’s So Vital Article by Gary Trickett (And no, it’s not just important for keeping colds and flu at bay, although that is on the list…) Vitamin C is important for many reasons but especially so for immune health, collagen synthesis and wound healing. It’s also an important antioxidant. One of the main reasons people take vitamin C supplements is to boost the immune system. Vitamin C is well-documented for aiding in the prevention of colds and other infections and one way it does this is by encouraging the production of white blood cells that help protect the body against infection. Not so well-known is the role it plays in helping the body to absorb iron, which in turn is needed to transport oxygen around the body, keeping cells healthy and fighting fit. Vitamin C is also important for the production of collagen, the main component of connective tissue, which is needed for healthy joints and mobility. And since vitamin C is needed for collagen production, low levels of vitamin C can slow the rate of tissue formation, which can cause wounds to heal more slowly. Slow wound healing is one of the more advanced signs of vitamin C deficiency and typically not seen unless you’ve been deficient for some time. The good news is there are lots of dietary sources of vitamin C. From brassicas to berries there are plenty of foods that are naturally rich in vitamin C. Strawberries especially are an excellent source of vitamin C, pipping the average orange to the post when it comes to total vitamin C content. Other good food sources are acerola cherries, blackcurrants, kiwis, red peppers, Brussel sprouts, broccoli and kale. All of these foods contain good amounts of natural vitamin C. A natural vitamin C supplement can also help. A.Vogel’s Nature-C provides naturally occurring vitamin C sourced from real fruits, including acerola, gooseberries and blackcurrants, in chewable tablet form. An equally natural Nature-C for Kids is also available for children as young as four – perfect for when that curly kale just isn’t hitting the spot! For further information, visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester.

Hope Bell Engagement You may be aware that the Hope Bell will be a lasting memorial to all those who have lost their lives in the Covid-19 pandemic. It will be a tribute to the wonderful people in the NHS who put themselves at risk to save others, and the key workers who kept critical services going. The bell will be a beacon to hope for the future and a reminder of how communities came together to support each other in challenging times. The Hope Bell will eventually be housed in Queen’s Park in Loughborough Stone Snake Shepshed Town Council commissioned a business to create a feature in the Glenmore Park from stones which were painted by local children in and around Shepshed during the pandemic. Unfortunately with 24 hours of it being put in place it was vandalised by a mindless person/people. Your Borough Cllrs are very disappointed it was a great work of art by local children as a tribute to the NHS, key workers and all people who carried on working to keep food etc on our tables. We ask why! Lighting the Beacon competition for the Platinum Jubilee A competition is being held to find a local resident to play an important part in Charnwood’s celebration for Her Majesty the Queen’s |Platinum Jubilee. A plaque dedicating the Outwoods Visitor Centre and Cafe in memory of David Slater, former leader of Charnwood Borough Council has been unveiled. The plaque recognises David’s service to the people of Charnwood and was revealed at an event to formally open the centre and cafe. David’s family including his wife Janice attended the event with other guests to see the unveiling. Responsibility of the Outwoods lies with the Outwoods Management Committee which is a separate body to the Council. However, the Council effectively manages the Outwoods working alongside the committee. Last year, the Council invested around £130,000 to convert the former ranger’s cottage into a visitor centre and cafe. The cafe opened at the end of 2021.
