Apart from on a Sunday morning, we also produce online a daily “Thought for the Day”. That’s a 5-minute video reflection, showing the relevance, helpfulness and comfort of God’s word to life in lockdown. You really are very welcome to join us every day. You’ll find us at our website: https:// shepshedwordoflife.org/ where you’ll see how to join us on a Sunday or listen each day. If you want to get in touch please phone Simon Clarke on 07473 952161 or email us at contact@shepshedwordoflife.org

Article by Brenda Snape

Library users will be able to request items using the form on the council's website and a member of the libraries team will be in contact to confirm a date and time for collection. To help protect staff and customers, hand sanitiser will be available all sites and any returned items will be quarantined for 72 hours before being put back on the shelves. Opening times for click and collect service is Tuesday 2 – 4 pm, Wednesday 10-12, Thursday 2-4pm, Friday 10-12 and Saturday 10-12.

When it is safe, both for the community and for the congregation, we are planning to return to our Belton Street site for worship. In the meantime, we are progressing our plans to redevelop the Kirkhill site which we hope will prove to be of benefit for Shepshed for generations to come.

Christian Aid Covid-19 Cookbook Article by Jane Payne

It costs £5 per copy to buy, has 47 recipes that locals used in lockdown. As the St Botolph's Christian Aid Group had to cancel our house to house collections, sponsored walk and cake sale over the last few months we set too and produced this cookbook. This was the idea of Kathryn Lewis and Samantha Taylor who have produced this fabulous cookbook. All proceeds will go to Christian Aid. If you would like to buy a copy of the cookbook please contact Jane Payne 01509 829804 or 07980033556 or email office@ shepshedandoaks.co.uk

Lion President Lynn Jackson said, 'We deferred a final decision on Carnival until the last possible moment, hoping against hope for a sudden and unexpected improvement in the Coronavirus situation. Clearly, with a localised lockdown nearby in Leicester, this has not happened, and so Carnival 2020 has had to be cancelled. As it happens, Shepshed Town Council have decided in any event that in the interests of public safety, Glenmore Park cannot host the event this year. Shepshed Lions are in complete agreement with this decision by the Town Council, and we will start planning for Carnival on August 30th next year very soon. I would like to thank the Town Council for their ongoing support for Carnival, and also Loughborough Building Society, who in spite of all the uncertainty pledged their usual sponsorship support for Carnival some months ago. We are now looking with concern at this year's senior citizens' lunch, due to take place in October, and also whether we will be able to help Santa as he tours the streets of Shepshed in the run up to Christmas! Let's hope and pray we are back to normal by then.

Citizens Advice Charnwood Announces Future Changes To Its Services Article by Ian Dennis

Citizens Advice Charnwood has been running an emergency phone advice line only since the Covid-19 lockdown. From 7 September it is hoped they will also be able to offer a limited number of face-to-face appointments in both their Loughborough and Shepshed offices. Appointments will be available on Monday, Tuesday & Thursday in Loughborough and Monday & Wednesday in Shepshed. Unfortunately, they are not able to resume their drop-in service for the foreseeable future. During this time, however, there are still a number of ways people can get advice: • Through our Contact Centre, which people can reach by calling 03444 111 444. Open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. • By calling our local Emergency number 01509 649605 • Contacting the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133 for Consumer issues (e.g. issues related to products or services you've purchased). • Making a new claim for Universal Credit by calling the Universal Credit Help to Claim line on 0800 1448444. Waiting times for these services may be slightly longer than usual as we adapt to our new patterns of working. Ian Dennis, Chief Officer of Citizens Advice Charnwood, said: “Citizens Advice is here to give people the knowledge and confidence they need to find their way forward in these difficult times. Unfortunately, to support the government’s guidelines, we had to take the decision to suspend face-to-face services. We are hoping that through a special appointment system we will be able to see people again from 7th September in both our Loughborough and Shepshed offices. We’ll continue to offer advice over the telephone and full details about this can be found on our website: www.charnwoodcab.org.uk

Shepshed Toy Library Article by Catherine Tideswell

Running since 1984, Shepshed Toy Library is based on the Iveshead Campus. The Toy Library is mainly grant funded and we'd like to thank the Leicestershire Communities Fund for donating £3,000 towards running costs during the pandemic. We usually close our doors during the school holiday period. However, having been closed for over 3 months, we have decided to break with tradition and open throughout summer. Everyone who comes will need to book an appointment via shepshedtoylib.yahoo.co.uk. We have over 1000 toys for loan including story sacks, indoor and outdoor toys as well as games, puzzles and DVD's. Toys are mainly for pre-schoolers/ reception age but we have family board games too. When toys are returned they are quarantined for at least 3 days and then cleaned before being put out for loan. We also sell toys and stationery. Please log onto www.shepshedtoylib.org or go onto Facebook for further information.

We remain fully available for appointments via face to face, telephone, email and now by post if required. We are still willing to meet our clients in the comfort of their homes by appointment only and are following guidance provided by the Government in regards to hygiene and safe distancing. We will of course work with you, our customers and partners, and respect their wishes on preferred means of contract. Kornerstone Legal Services remains here for you.

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Kornerstone Wealth Protection and Legal services will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

Jane Hunt Member of Parliament

T: 01509 262723 E: jane.hunt.mp@parliament.uk As lockdown has eased, life is slowly returning to normality. These past four weeks has seen the usual rounds of meetings and visits starting to resume. In the constituency it has been wonderful to see life slowly returning to normal. In early July, pubs and licensed premises reopened and it was great to see people enjoying themselves in a socially distanced way. I dropped into the Bull & Bush in Shepshed recently to meet with licencees Nez and Laura who showed me the safety measures that they and Admiral Taverns have put in place to ensure the safety of customers and staff. When I visited on a Friday afternoon, the pub was buzzing which was wonderful to see. I hope that it's a sign that the economy will bounce back, with people willing to return to pubs and restaurants. I've held some very productive meetings both here and in Westminster. With the Leicester lockdown continuing to be a concern for constituents; I have held a number of virtual meetings with both the Police and Crime Commissioner and the Chief Constable on policing of the lockdown zone. They have been taking the issue incredibly seriously and thankfully most people from the city are adhering to the measures and avoiding unnecessary travel. I have spoken about the Leicester lockdown in the Chamber and made a speech on the restoration and renewal of the Palace of Westminster. I have also had useful discussions with the team from Barclays LifeSkills. This scheme has been developed by Barclays to help young people get the skills and experiences they need to enter the world of work. They have helped so many young people nationally, and I will be working with them over the coming months and years to help more young people locally get the skills they need to get on in life. I have also had several zooms and virtual meetings about climate change and getting to net zero. I also held a meeting with local farmers to discuss the Trade Bill and production issues. Locally, residents will be aware that I have been addressing the flooding issues on the A6 in Hathern. After pursuing this issue with Leicestershire County Council, they have recently installed two new gullies and replaced two existing gullies. They have also installed an extra inspection chamber to create better access for maintenance and cleansing in the future. Now the works have been completed County Hall plan to liaise with the adjacent landowners to consider and discuss if there are any opportunities to further reduce the impact of run off water from surrounding land. Collectively, I am hopeful that these measures will help to reduce flooding at this location. Finally, it’s fair to say that these past few months have been difficult. Therefore, it is particularly important this year that we all look after ourselves and spend some time with friends and families as lockdown is eased, so I hope you manage to get a break during the summer months.

Shepshed Litter Pickers Article by Gill Moore

Since June this year Shepshed Litter Pickers have been back out there making a difference. Started in February 2019 by myself and my son Zack we did 6 monthly picks. We stopped over the winter and then due to Covid were unable to start again until June this year. I started a Facebook page to advertise the group and our volunteer numbers have gone from 6 to 60 in a few weeks. Our youngest members are Ella 9 and Abbie 6 pictured with Zack 13. I have a wonderful group of people who come out picking with me some of whom started last year, others who have joined more recently. We log all the litter collected on a Leicestershire page that includes the picks from the North Leicestershire Litter Wombles who are based in Belton and have joined us on picks and the South Leicestershire Litter Wombles. The total at the last count was 831 bags across the area. We started with some cheap equipment but have progressed to high quality equipment thanks to the generosity of some wonderful local donations. We also now have high visibility vests to keep us safe, sponsored by local company Hallcroft Opticians and The Lions Club are assisting with our safety by sponsoring some road signs that will let people know we are in the road and hopefully slow down. Both of these items were provided by a local company Pennline. Lastly we have secured a grant from Shepshed Town Council to allow us to buy a much needed trolley and some more essential equipment. A shout out to Julie-anne at Charnwood Borough council for all her help organising the collections with Serco. We separate and squash all the aluminium cans which we then deposit in the Big Red Can Bank in Glenmore Park for the Helipads for Hospitals campaign run by the Rotary. The aim is to collect 1 million cans to melt down to create portable Helipads for hospitals, starting with our own Leicester Royal. I am also looking out for the non-returnable large ton bags that building supplies are delivered in, as these are used to transport and store the cans. I am popping notes through peoples doors asking if they be willing to donate them. Since 6th June we have removed an incredible 64 bags of rubbish the Jubilee Line, Butthole Lane, Blackbrook Reservoir, Iveshead Road crossroads and other surrounding roads.

Keith Harris Borough Councillor for Hathern

T: 01509 557701 E: cllr.keith.harris@charnwood.gov.uk I received some very good news about the proposed new woodland in Hathern. Adam Goodall, the officer in charge of this, has drafted a proposal and plan which contain a lot of good reasons why this should go forward. It involves a change of use and so he has to obtain permission from the planning department to go ahead. The land behind Golden Square has been vacant for two years after the tenancy for agricultural use expired. The land can’t be built on because it is an Area of Local Separation, which means that it can’t be developed as it is essential to maintain Hathern’s identity as a separate community. It cannot be used for energy production either as Golden Square is very close and the residents would not like wind turbines keeping them awake. The woodland would comprise 15,000 trees and contribute 15% of the borough’s target of 100,000 trees to be planted, which would gobble up many tons of carbon, helping to boost the council’s efforts towards being carbon neutral. For the residents it would provide a lovely amenity with paths, open spaces, rides, glades, picnic areas and a wildlife pond. Adam has the full and very enthusiastic support of the parish council, the two borough councillors Emma and myself and of the county councillor. He would be very happy to receive support from residents as he seeks to get it approved. The wood will need a name. If you would like to suggest one, contact the parish council. There is good news on the Daisy Bank front as well. Cara Wild, the officer in charge, has told me that she has been promised a schedule of work soon from William Davis detailing how they are going to finish the planting and other works. Thank you to any residents who contacted WD. Cara’s contact did mention that he had received communications from residents. Hopefully we can knock it on the head this autumn and move to the first certificate of completion. The Community Library has opened again. You can make an appointment or you can turn up and take your turn when there are no other visitors inside. You must be all used to standing in a queue by now! We can’t order books from other libraries at the moment, as the main libraries are not open and the distribution system is not functioning yet. You can download ebooks as well. Don’t forget to encourage your children to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge. There are the physical books in the building and ebooks on the website.

Thank You!

Article by Local Resident I would like to thank the lady or gentlemen who handed in my shopping bag and belongings in at Shepshed ASDA. From a very grateful pensioner. Thank you.

Hathern Together are placing videos of one garden a week in the virtual version of Open Gardens. I have heard that some Charnwood residents have submitted comments regarding the Garendon SUE development with the impression that they can still object to it as a whole. The SUE has had permission for over 4 years now. Residents can, however, raise questions about aspects of the plan which do not appear to be clear, for example, how the agricultural land will be accessed. On July 23 I had an online meeting with borough councillors Emma Ward and Paul Boldrin and the county councillors Betty Newton and Max Hunt to discuss aspects of the development which we would like some explanations on and we are submitting questions. Hathern Parish Council is holding its meetings online on Zoom for the foreseeable future. The next meeting is on August 3rd at 7.30. This may arrive too late for you to join that one. Residents can join all meetings and bring up issues during the public participation part and when the Chair allows them to comment on other matters, which is normally the case. The next meetings after that will be on September 14th and October 26th. The parish council has now opened Hathern Park fully and that includes the play area and skatepark. Users must still maintain social distancing and personal hygiene. Only one household is allowed on any play item at a time. Instructions have been placed in the park. Please observe the guidelines and rules and keep everyone safe. The council invites organisations or individuals to hire the park space to run group sessions for exercise, fitness or skills training. Charnwood had 813 coronavirus cases up to July 25th with a rate per 100,000 around 430 which is a lower rate than Blaby, Hinckley and Bosworth and Oadby and Wigston. The number of new cases in our borough is very low. Our population seems to be observing the guidelines very closely. Please stay safe by maintaining social distancing and personal hygiene including washing hands and disinfecting surfaces and wearing a mask in enclosed spaces.

Appointments with Customer Advisors are available from Monday to Friday 08.30am until 4.30 pm, with 30 minute slots given to each customer. Reception will be closed from 12.30 pm to 1.30 pm and there will be no entry into the building during this time. All customers will be required to queue outside of the building before entry; queuing guides will be outside and inside to support social distancing. Customers will be encouraged to wear a face covering and will be required to use the hand sanitising station on entering the building. You may be asked to have your temperature checked before allowing entry. People who visit the Council without an appointment will be triaged to establish the nature of their enquiry and if they are able to access the service from home, online or by telephone they will be asked to do so. Appointments will only be offered to those who have no other means of undertaking their transaction with the Council. Social distancing restrictions

mean that there will only be a limited number of appointments available each day, which may mean triaged customers, will be offered an appointment to return on a later date. The customer service desks have been fitted with protective plastic screens to minimise infection transmission risks and to ensure that there is a safe distance between customers and staff members. The Reception area has been rearranged according to Government guidance on social distancing and interview rooms with plastic screens will be used for oneto-one meetings between customers and Council officers. There will be no internal waiting area for customers and only one customer per enquiry will be allowed in the building unless the customer is vulnerable or exceptional circumstances apply. The public access PCs that are normally available for customers will not be accessible and there are no toilets available for use by members of the public. This is to ensure that the number of people in the building is always kept to a minimum. Customer Service Advisors have been supplied with the relevant PPE including a pack of washable face masks, gloves and hand sanitiser for their personal use, and the reception area is being thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis to ensure that there is no risk of infecting others. We would urge customers to continue to use on line services where possible. The Council website can be used to make payments, submit planning applications, apply for housing, manage your council tax and benefits and much more. Charnwood residents can keep updated on any service changes during the Coronavirus pandemic by visiting www.charnwood.gov.uk/coronavirus and by signing up to email newsletters at www.charnwood.gov.uk/alerts. You can still contact any of your Borough Cllrs for help or advice. Covid-19 recovery grants launched to help community groups Community groups and charities in Charnwood are being encouraged to apply for funding to help recover from coronavirus pandemic. The borough Council’s Charnwood VCS COVID-19 Recovery Grants will help voluntary organisations respond to community needs as lockdown restrictions continue to ease. Community groups and local charities have had to operate differently since lockdown, with some having to temporarily close buildings, stop offering serices and adapt the way they support people. The VCS COVID-19 Recovery Grants programme is aimed at organisations that need additional funding for phased reopening of buildings, restarting or adapting their services. The new single fund has been created by combining the existing funding for Community Development and Engagement and Loughborough Community Grants. The Charnwood VCS COVID-19 Recovery Grant Scheme is open to properly constituted community and voluntary groups for activities not conducted for profit. The grant scheme will award organisations up to £5,000. Charnwood businesses share discretionary grant fund A support package of £1.65 million is being shared by 185 Charnwood businesses struggling because of the pandemic. Charnwood Borough Council has issued government grants of up to £25,000 to businesses that successfully applied to the discretionary grant fund. The business discretionary grant scheme was launched on 3rd June for small businesses able to demonstrate significant financial difficulties because of COVID-19. Applications were accepted up to 22 June. The Council will now have contacted all applicants to confirm if they have been successful. The Government provided an initial set of criteria with the fund open to charities, businesses in shared business spaces and market traders. The Council also had discretion about which businesses could be funded and produced criteria to fund those supporting employment in Charnwood, delivering health, welfare or community support services or with relatively high on-going fixed property costs. All applications were assessed and scored against the eligibility criteria. COVID-19 Measures brought in as free parking extended until end of July Charnwood Borough Council installed contactless barriers and ticket machines at Beehive Lane and Granby Street car parks. This means customers will not have to touch any buttons to enter the car parks. The Council also supported local businesses for longer by keeping parking free in all council-owned car parks until the end of July, after which parking charges were re-introduced. Charnwood suspended parking charges in March when lockdown restrictions were brought in to make it easier for key workers to park. Charnwood also introduced social distancing requirements such as a one-way pedestrian system with signs, arrows and markings as we look to keep visitors, workers and shoppers using their facilities as safe as possible. However, the Council has lost around £75,000 a month in lost parking income.

This funding is used to maintain the car parks and contribte towards other services including maintaining our parks, street cleaning, enforcement, street furniture and environmental protection. These services have continued but income has dropped significantly. The Council has also lost funding from other sources, including leisure centres, the town hall and fees and charges. Loughborough Town Deal awarded £750,000 for projects Loughborough Town Deal has scored its first success after being awarded £750,000 of government funding to make the town better for everyone. The project is aiming to secure up to £25 million of government funding to transform the own and an investment plan is being put together. Loughborough Town Deal is being led by a board involving a range of organisations, including Charnwood Borough Council, Loughborough University, Loughborough College, Love Loughborough, Leicestershire County Council, the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership, Charnwood Together Economy and Skills Group, local businesses and Loughborough MP Jane Hunt, Charnwood Borough Council Leader, Cllr Jonathan Morgan and Dr Nik Kotecha OBE, chief executive officer of Morningside Pharmaceuticals based in the town. The latter two are co-chairs of the board. This is great news and a welcome boost for Loughborough in the current climate. The funding can be used for a range of projects, Examples include: • Improving or creating new parks and green spaces and sustainable transport links • Improving town centres, such as by repurposing empty commercial properties • Demolishing or remediating sites Other projects will be considered which are in line with the Town Deal Funds guidance. A consultation on a draft investment plan for Loughborough Town Deal has recently been completed and a final investment plan will be finalised later. For more information, please visit www.loughborougtowndeal.co.uk. Name that bin wagon Young residents are being asked to name a new shining fleet of refuse and recycling vehicles which have started to arrive in Charnwood. Charnwood Borough Council’s current vehicles are being replaced with a new fleet of 41 new lorries, vans and road sweepers.

new names will be revealed later in the summer. Don’t lose your voice – look out for electoral registration letters More than 77,000 homes across Charnwood will be contacted this month to keep the electoral register in borough up-to-date. Charnwood Borough Council is writing to all homes in the borough as part of the annual canvass, to ensure residents have their place on the electoral register and can vote when elections return next year. In a change to previous years, most people will not have to do anything. More than 55,000 homes will receive a letter confirming the council has all the information needed for the register and no action is required, unless there have been changes. A further 22,000 homes will be written to by the Council asking for confirmation of people who live at the property and who are eligible to vote. Being on the electoral register is important, not just so that you can vote in elections and have your say in regional and national issues. It is also important and can assist with services such as credit checks, mobile phone contracts and similar. Food and health and safety team update The food and health and safety team has been working hard during the pandemic to ensure that businesses are well informed and were prepared for the 4th July re-opening. We are aware that they have been out and about checking compliance. • 256 interactions/visits to business across the borough to assist with the re-opening • 115 pubs contacted and surveyed in preparation for opening on July 4th • 195 service requests relating to COVID-19 (62 business closures, 126 social distancing, 7 hygiene of premises) • 103 advice and guidance emails sent to businesses. Phased reopening of leisure centres Charnwood are working with their partners Fusion, which operates the leisure centres on behalf of the Council, about reopening the leisure centres in Charnwood in the coming weeks. Charnwood are planning to reopen the health and fitness facilities at Soar Valley Leisure Centre in week commencing August 3rd and at South Charnwood Leisure Centre in week commencing August 10th. Charnwood are working on plans to reopen Loughborough Leisure Centre. Subject to Cabinet approval on August 13th, it is proposed to reopen the health and fitness facilities at Loughborough and swimming pools at all three sites. However, there are significant financial implications for the Council and therefore it will need Cabinet decision.

Whether it’s Bin Diesel, Forest Dump or Johnny Trash, local children are being asked to enter the Name That Wagon competition and submit their name suggestions. The more pun-tastic the better but remember to keep them clean!. No pun intended and please no Binlorry McBinFace suggestions.

Charnwood will confirm reopening dates as soon as they can as they recognise the importance of staying healthy and active and that’s why Charnwood are keen to reopen the leisure centres as soon as possible.

Or if you want, put forward names of someone you know or who you think is special.

Town Hall remains closed until at least October 11th In light of the government’s updated advice on social distancing and proposed national plans for recover, Loughborough Town Hall regrets to amount that they will remain closed until October 11th at the earliest.

Names will appear on the side of the 21 bin Lorries and four road sweepers. The first vehicle has been named Florence, a dedication to the NHS heroes and key workers who are on the front line supporting the public during the coronavirus pandemic. The vehicle will also feature a large rainbow on the side along with a thank you message.

The Sock Art Social The Sock Gallery’s Sock Summer Open Exhibition which is usually situated in the Town Hall has sadly been cancelled this year due to COVID-19. But not to worry creative souls, you can take part online as part of ‘The Sock Art Social’

The Council is investing around £4.8 million in a more efficient and safer fleet which will include the latest technology. The refuse lorries will have a new in-cab technology to give the crews real-time information on operational issues as they carry out their rounds in the borough.

Artists (amateur or professional)from age 4 and upwards are being asked to share their artwork with the team, with the theme being what’ brings you joy’.

The 360-degree camera system will also be installed on each lorry to provide additional safety for staff members, other road users and members of the public, particularly cyclist and pedestrians.

The Sock Gallery will share your artwork on their social media channels with links to your social media, websites and online stores. Full details can be found on the Loughborough Town Hall website.

Four cameras will capture live recordings from the front, rear and sides of the vehicle. The view from the cameras will be displayed on the in-cab screen, giving drivers an improved view of potential cyclists and other road users to the rear of the lorry whilst reversing. The front facing camera also provides a wide-angle lens for a greater field of vision. An additional camera to the rear of the vehicle will focus on the main working area to provide extra protection for the crew.

Boundary Review The Local Government Boundary Commission for England will be carrying out a review of Charnwood Borough ward boundaries during the next 12 months or so. We had been invited to attend a virtual introductory session on 1st July. We will keep you informed when we have any information as to what the impact will be on Shepshed.

The vehicles which are being manufactured by Dennis Eagle will also be more environmentally friendly and contribute towards the Council’s target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030. The new fleet of Lorries complies with the latest emissions’ standards and is expected to reduce the Council’s carbon footprint. The fleet will also include two Nissan electric vehicles and two hybrid vehicles from Ford.

Stage 1 is about deciding how many Cllrs Charnwood Borough Council should have. Currently there are 52. Stage 2 is to look at the re-drawing of boundaries which starts February 2021. It is at this stage which the Government Boundary Commission will go out for consultation. Final recommendations will be in January 2022.

By buying 20 of these larger, 32-tonne vehicles, Charnwood Borough Council found they could reduce the fleet size and save both capital outlay and operating costs. There’s nothing else in the market that could rival them. Charnwood have also ordered an Olympus Mini for rural collections and harder-to-reach places.

Monthly Surgeries We hope things will return to a more normal way of life for us all in the weeks ahead. Unfortunately due to the COVID-19 virus we shall not be able to continue to hold our regular monthly surgery, we can still be contacted either by phone or email.

The four new road sweepers are being supplied by Johnston, a company which has been making sweepers for more than 75 years. For more information and to enter please visit: www.charnwood.gov.uk/ NameThatWagon The winners will be contacted by the Council directly and the

Christine Radford County Councillor for Shepshed T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com

I do hope that this still finds you in good health. Even during the lockdown I am still doing County work , dealing with residents concerns and having virtual meetings. Meeting of the Leicestershire County Council The first ever virtual meeting of the Full Council was held on 8th July and commenced at 2pm and finished at 6.40 pm. Due to the fact it had been quite a while since we had had a meeting there it was a very full programme. The Leader made his statement which covered a number of topics. Which were COVID-19, Lockdown of Leicester and surrounding areas, Economic Recovery, Devolution and the Melton Mowbray Distributor Road. A report was given regarding the Recovery Strategy and Financial Implications of COVID-19. We discussed the work being undertaken to address the on-going impact, together with the increasingly serious financial position facing the County Council and the measures in place to monitor and minimise the impact. There were also a number of strategies discussed; those were the revised Environment Strategy and Action Plan, Equalities Strategy 2020-2024 and Equalities Action Plan 2020-2021, the Youth Justice Strategic Plan 20202023 and the Annual Review of Overview and Scrutiny Bodies. We were asked to note changes to the Cabinet and Cabinet Support Members, I am pleased to say that I am still Cabinet support to the Cabinet Leader of the Adult and Communities department. We were also asked to note the membership of Committees.

Adult Learning Service The Service is preparing its programme for the start of the new academic term in September. It will be aiming to deliver a mixture of live classes and online, but will need to take account of the Covid situation nearer the time. County are continuing the new GO LEARN website for everyone to access with lots of advice, FREE resources and free courses. This website is open to anyone who wishes to access it – staff, service users or members of the public. New Shepshed Special School The Special School in Shepshed, is for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), will be replacing St Botolphs School which will be relocating to the old High School. This is one of a number of new special schools and provisions in mainstream schools being created by Leicestershire County Council as part of its broader plans which involve investing up to £30m to develop new provisions for children and young people with special educational needs in the county. The Community Inclusive Trust has been appointed to run the school when it opens in September 2023. It will be of great benefit to children and families here in Leicestershire and is part of County’s wider plan to ensure SEND provision is available to families in the county, as close to their homes as possible. Bosworth Medieval Festival 2020 goes virtual Bosworth Medieval Festival may not be going ahead this year at Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre due to the coronavirus restrictions – but people of all ages will still be able to enjoy the sights and sound of the annual event in digital version. The build-up starts online on Sunday 16th August, with posts throughout the week on the Bosworth Battlefield Facebook, Twitter and Instagram channels. This will include Bosworth quizzes, historical information about the battle, craft and fancy dress competitions for children, living history videos narrated by a character caught up in the battle and an appeal for people to send in their images of past festivals.

Health and Wellbeing Board I recently represented the County at a virtual meeting of the Health and Wellbeing Board. We viewed and discussed the Annual Report of the Safeguarding Adult Board 2019/20 and the Strategic Plan 2020-2025. We also looked at and discussed the Health and Wellbeing Board’s Annual draft report 2019. Healthwatch Leicestershire Annual Review. Coronavirus (CIVID-19) Impact and Response on the Local Care System.

It will culminate in the festival weekend of Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd August, when events will be posted online and on social media at the time they would have been taking place at the festival site.

Adults and Safeguarding Board I also attended and represented County at a virtual meeting of the Leicester Safeguarding Adults Board and the Leicestershire and Rutland Adults Safeguarding Board joint board meeting.

The annual rose laying ceremony to commemorate those killed in the Battle of Bosworth is taking place virtually at 11am, to mark the 535th anniversary of the battle. The Heritage Centre is inviting people to post pictures and videos of themselves laying their own roses remotely.

We discussed work in prisons, the most vulnerable residents, family carers under extra pressure, and homeless/rough sleepers and we looked at the Transforming Care in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland the story so far.

Join in the Virtual Bosworth Medieval Fun at www.bosworthbattlefield.org. uk on Facebook at www.facebook.com/BosworthBattlefield and on Twitter at https://twitter.com/BosworthLCC.

I have found that being on these Boards very useful in my position as Cabinet support I can focus on some of the issues raised. Such as people with learning disabilities living a good fulfilling life and living within their communities.

Advance Notice of a Temporary Regulation Order (TTRO) A TTRO is to be made at the following location, The Lant, on behalf of Severn Trent Water to safely undertake works to replace a manhole cover and frame.

Covid-19 Since my last report there has been a lock down in the City of Leicester and some areas of Charnwood and County. Fortunately Shepshed is doing quite well, but concerns were raised about residents from the lockdown area coming into Shepshed for a drink or a haircut. County Cllrs have regular virtual briefings to keep us informed as to what is happening and the current situation. Rules of wearing face covering in shops has now come into place, I am now used to taking mine with me when I am out and about. The Record Office remains closed to staff due to extended lockdown in Wigston. The Collections and Conservation team are working on the Snibston site to move collections in advance of re-opening of the Colliery Park in autumn and the Museum Collections team are working with Recovery to be able to go back into the Collections Resources Centre. Day Services and short breaks remain closed except for emergency situations. Premises have been signed off as Covid compliant in readiness for most buildings re-opening hopefully in August with services in the Wigston area dependent on the Leicester lock down restrictions.

The two-day Virtual Bosworth Medieval Festival kicks off at 10am on the Saturday, when Jester The Fool Monty – huge hit at last year’s event – opens proceedings with a specially-recorded film of him performing magic tricks.

The TTRO will incorporate a temporary road closure and temporary suspension of one-way system. The duration of the restriction is not anticipated to exceed a period of 1 day commencing on 24th August. Information I have taken from Leicestershire Police messages A dedicated operation to support the re-opening of the night-time economy and help support the policing of lockdown has been launched by Leicestershire Police. The force has deployed additional officers, including members of their Special Constabulary, to work over the weekend period and beyond. Operation Integrate saw more officers on duty than for a typical New Years Eve to help ensure communities across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland stay safe wherever they live. The force has been working with community safety partners and the licensing trade to support and facilitate the reopening of premises. ASB Use of Motorbikes – Tickow Lane Area – A note form the beat team that they are aware of residents concerns in the area of Tickow Lane and Oakley Road BMX track of motor bikes being used in and Anti-social manner.

The Police are actively patrolling the area where possible and they ask members of the public who see this type of behaviour to please get in touch with them to share any information. They ask that if you are able to note any registration numbers and any evidence that may assist in identifying those involved. Please call 101 or email the team. Lee Taylor is moving on to pastures new in Melton Mowbray and PS4329 Catherine Collins is taking over from 2nd August. The rest of the beat team looking after Shepshed, Hathern, Dishley and Thorpe Acre (beat 64) is staying the same. These are PC 1969 ORTON, PCSO 6014 GEE, PCSO 6046 DAVIS, PCSO 6552 MUSA and PCSO 6542 PATEL. Shepshed Library Since Monday 13th July Shepshed Library have been offering a click and collect service. This service is only at 11 of our 16 main libraries. County see this as a first tentative step towards resuming a normal service. I know that libraries play a vital role in supporting local residents, providing learning, enjoyment and supporting health and wellbeing. Library members will have the opportunity to request a selection of books and audio books as the librarians have carefully selected titles across all genres based on customer’s preferences.

Buses – I hope following many concerns raised by residents, Town Council and myself, that ARRIVA have re-instated the 127 bus to revert back to the previous route, up Glenmore Ave along Tickow Lane and onto Anson Road, if this is not the case could somebody please let me know. Your help and support Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such as overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess, inconsiderate parking (on pavements, yellow lines, outside of schools) etc., without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. If for some reason you do not receive your copy of the Eye. I now have my information posted on my web page at County. This will also help you to keep track on road closures etc. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 01509 502974 or e mail christine_radford@hotmail.com or christine.radford@ leics.gov.uk or due to the lock down I will not be able to have my regular monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road.

I know that some members still enjoy the physical experience of borrowing a book rather than reading on a Kindle etc so that County are hoping the click and collect service proves popular.

Leicestershire libraries call for children aged between 4 and twelve years old to join Silly Squad by signing up for this year’s digital Summer Reading Challenge. Over 9,000 children took part at Leicestershire’s libraries in 2019 buy the impact of social distancing on libraries across the country means the annual challenge led by The Reading Agency has moved online. This year’s theme is Silly Squad, a celebration of happiness, laughter and funny books. Children will set their own reading target and collect digital rewards as they work their way through their books over the summer holidays, collecting additional games, videos and activities along the way. Children can sign up for the challenge at any time throughout the summer at www.sillysquad.org.uk Residents Issues GLW Feed – excessive smell /odour, noise and dust – I have received a report back that the Company are working to identify any necessary improvement to minimise emissions. I have also been advised that EA are undertaking a permit review to reflect the requirements of new Food Drink BREF. This imposes tighter dust emission limits, in particular on coolers and grinders in the feed industry. In anticipation of these new requirements GLW Feeds installed new blenders and grinders last year and relocated the exhausts stack so that it terminated vertically at the top of the new mill building.
