Shepshed History Society

Protecting Your Family Inheritance

November 9th saw the Shepshed History Society being entertained by the very well known authoress Margaret Dickinson. It was a very interesting evening as Margaret gave an intriguing insight into the life of a writer and what it entails to write a successful novel.

Our frontline staff follow Government guidelines for visiting you in your home and they are in the vaccination program with second course completed. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you.

Article by Marjorie Schulz

The most important part of beginning a book is having to travel the length and breadth of the country in order to verify or discover various happenings and events that have occurred in the past to make sure everything is as accurate as possible in composing a new novel. For this of course is essential in making a successful book, like life in the cotton mills for example, when life at the looms was a hazard to both life and limb. So not only are the novels enjoyable, they are also very educational. Margaret then finished the evening by offering the society the chance to buy one of her many novels if they wished to do so. The December meeting on December 14th will be the Christmas social evening when Robert Mee will be giving an account of the Ealing Comedies and this will be followed by a Christmas supper and mulled wine. New members are welcome as always.

Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

Mancini Hair Salon A Fitting Tribute To The Late Michael Wortley Article by Marjorie Schulz

On Saturday the 13th of November in order to commemorate the life of the legendary and very well known Shepshed Historian, Michael Wortley, it was decided to erect a memorial corner in the Shepshed Library in his honour. Michael who passed away four years ago was very well known for his Magic Lantern Shows, showing countless old photographs of Shepshed in days gone by.Not only showing photographs but entertaining the public by relating the interesting and sometimes amusing tales behind them. These enjoyable shows were very popular, the proceeds of which amounted to many thousands of pounds over the years and were donated to the Air Ambulance Service. Michael was always known as the man to go to or, Mr Shepshed. If anyone needed to know anything, nine times out of ten they would come away with the right answer. Many people over the years have donated countless irreplaceable old photographs of Shepshed to Michael in the knowledge that they would have been well taken care of for posterity and for future generations to enjoy. A lovely kind and caring man, family, friends and councillors Peter Grainger, David Northage and Christine Radford all joined together to witness the unveiling by Mrs Wortley of a tasteful brass plaque and a reminiscent photograph of Michael posing with his beloved Magic Lantern. Jonathan, his son along with Judith Neville from the library services did an excellent job in arranging the event which was a great success.

Als Electronic Shepshed Experience Article by Allan Dobb

And finally, as the last words roll off the keyboard and all the reviews of the months past come to mind, we are at the end of this year 2021. I view this year as a credible success with 57 podcast shows produced and posted onto my group page. When I started this project I set out one year to gauge whether or not it had legs. Well here we are 18 months into the project where I set out to promote Shepshed and surrounding area’s with news views and interviews, in a radio style concept. Throughout the year there has been a cautious breakout after Covid 19, and I was invited by Carolyn Page to her first outing at Hathern, and an open air craft fair. The weather was bright, warm and sunny, great to get our confidence back. The Shepshed Market Traders put on an event in the Hall Croft to thank all who have supported the said Market. There was music and side shows again the turnout was generous. The Lions Carnival on Glenmore Park took us all by surprise as to the turnout. I did a Facebook live as I wandered around talking to stall holders and generally getting a feel for the day. This was a help to those who couldn’t get down. The Traders on November 28th put on their Winter Event with a Daytime/evening Christmas Market, hopefully this will be a permanent entry on our calendars. I continued throughout the year to interview people in the community, far too many to mention. The year saw my group page also advance and updated every day with all things Shepshed, plus a daily missive Monday to Friday. I have enjoyed the interaction with all the people who have been so encouraging with the Project, and I thank you for your support.

£7,000 Cheque Presented To Shepshed Volunteer Centre Article by Brenda Snape

Cheque presentation made for £7,000 to Jayne Curnock of Shepshed Volunteer Centre by the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of Council Cllr Peter Grainger and Cllr David Northage. The monies are specially ringfenced for the Shepshed Outpost. Shepshed Town Council continues to financially support local groups and organisations within Shepshed. Jayne added: "Our thanks from Shepshed Volunteer Centre, as fundraising has been almost impossible due to the pandemic which makes the grant from Shepshed Town Council more important than ever, to ensure that the volunteer centre remains at the heart of the Shepshed community."

Community just doesn’t happen, and its not down to others. You may well have a gift that could well be beneficial to a club, charity or support to an organisation. The main aim of this project is to bring to the notice, what is happening and when, to speak with those who have a story to tell.

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

Testing 60 years of Engineering Technology Year 12 Product Design students spent an afternoon product testing two icons of automotive design. Firstly a modern automotive icon - the Tesla Model 3 and secondly one of the most influential cars of the 20th century, the classic Mini. Alec Issigonis’ design icon, the Mini was first released in 1959 and was revolutionary in its day. Today, Tesla is helping (possibly) to shape the way of things to come.

With over 60 years of engineering apart, the two cars highlighted how far we have come. The students spent the afternoon testing different aspects of the cars, ranging from functionality and technology through to ergonomics and semantics. For some, this was the first time they had experienced such different approaches to design. Their task then was to redesign the vehicles to improve the ergonomics and ease of use - slightly easier in the Mini as there is not much it can do! Jim Mark, Design Teacher

Keith Harris

Borough Councillor for Hathern T: 01509 557701 E: cllr.keith.harris@charnwood.gov.uk

The Hathern Village Association pulled it off again. The Wicked Fireworks was a resounding 4,500 ticket sell-out success. The displays were magnificent and there was so much else on offer with a funfair, stalls, many food vendors, soft drinks and a well-stocked bar and two stonking sets from the Zufflers. Catering for herbivores was a little sparse this time with not one veggie burger available at any of the three burger joints but there were halloumi chips and noodles. The bar was doing a brisk trade. I heard a few complaints that the waiting time was long. I went three times and it took less than five minutes twice and the longest I waited was about fifteen minutes. I would like people to bear in mind that these events are set up, run and cleared away by volunteers who give up their spare time and sometimes even holidays and grind away in the field in all weathers to provide them. There were about a dozen people working their bits off to serve the drinks, including the wonderful Jake from the Dew Drop. We cleared the field on the Sunday and recycled all the uncontaminated plastic, cans and bottles. Thank you to everyone who turned up to support this venture and a huge thank you to the HVA and all the locals who volunteered yet again. Hathern Club is thriving. There are regular music and other events with a much greater variety than before. The interior looks great and the drinks are really reasonably priced. The quiz night has restarted every second Thursday with the first at the Dew Drop and the second at the club. Martin Clayton did a sterling job as quizmaster with sound support from Lewis Fuller. The Dew Drop won last time by one point after the Library team shot themselves in both feet by changing two correct answers, yes, two! We lost another when I remembered that Amazon had banned Visa cards but didn’t add that it was only the credit version. So it is one match apiece so far in the grand scheme of things. You can form and enter a team and join in on December 2nd (too early for this article, alas) and 16th. Our lovely little library is thriving too with more residents visiting and becoming members. It is especially gratifying to see so many parents bringing children in who run round the place looking for books. The events schedule is running nicely and surgeries are being planned there by your two borough councillors and county councillor with the local PCSOs. Emma held one this week at the village hall when the PCSOs forgot that was the only weekday the library was closed. Look out for the dates and come along if you have any issues. Our friends from over the pond have transformed the Dew Drop into a bustling venue with music and other events. The extent to which they have entered the community was shown by Jake not only serving but volunteering behind the very bar at the fireworks which must have been huge competition on a Saturday night. See y’all in there. The Three Crowns has also been taken over and appears to be doing very well. Hathern has preserved two pubs and a club from extinction in a very short time. Let’s make sure these ventures continue to grow and thrive. The situation with the hedgerow has moved on. Thank you to everyone who commented during the extended consultation period. I think the officer has got the message that there is a lot of opposition to the removal of parts of the hedgerow. I have received a very comprehensive email from him outlining the background and he has noted my objections. The parish councillors have objected to not having access to certain documents and to parts of documents and comments being redacted due to sensitive issues and submitted that they should have unrestricted access in order to be able to comment fully. The Head of Planning is discussing this with the officers and will get back to the council soon. I have called the application in to the committee. This means that it is taken out of complete control of the officers and the elected members of the committee will be able to consider the issues and make their own mind up. They are not going to refuse the whole application due to the low housing numbers we have but they could attach conditions if they so wish. I can and will speak at the meeting and present objections to the hedge removal. I will argue that the south hedge could remain largely if not wholly intact with a bridge over the ditch in the existing opening and that the west hedge only needs one entrance to the park. Lifetime Commitment Dog rescue is having another huge auction and I hope some items will be left by the time you read this. Have a look at the album

10 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news

of items on their FB page and put in bids for anything you fancy. There are some great bargains. The funds go to their excellent work in rescuing, treating, spaying, worming and whatever else lost and unwanted dogs need. This means huge vet bills. You can donate nice items and bid for others. There will be a Craft Fair at Hathern Club on December 18th. I know it’s a bit early for the blokes to get their presents but the ladies like to plan ahead a bit more. There will be a wide range of local crafty things on sale. Hathern Wildlife are about to put the lining in the pond they are building on the allotments. If you have some time, go along and lend a couple of hands. Message Dave Neville for details. I have just read that Loughborough is among the worst areas in the country for Covid cases. We are slipping back into complacency. This saddens me after working at the Southfields clinic since December 23rd to try to help beat this dreadful scourge. We should really have knocked this on the head by now. Please be mindful and keep your socialising to reasonable limits. Wear your mask, get your booster. If we are all careful, the numbers should go down. If we are not, this will go on and on and then everyone’s freedom is up the spout yet again.

Jane Hunt

Member of Parliament

T: 01509 262723 E: jane.hunt.mp@parliament.uk I can’t quite believe it’s December already. It’s been another eventful year as we have continued to recover from the pandemic. We have made great strides these past months due to the incredible success of our vaccination programme. I’d like to thank all those from Shepshed and Hathern who played a part in delivery of this programme, which has allowed us to remove most of the Covid restrictions. Many residents are now eligible for booster jabs, so please do take up the opportunity if you are offered one. As part of Parliament Week recently, I welcomed the 6th Shepshed Guides to my office in Loughborough. I was able to share with them what it’s like to be a Member of Parliament and they asked some great questions. It was wonderful to be part of such a lively session and I loved hearing their policy ideas. Thanks to all of them for their enthusiasm and energy. I always enjoy speaking to schools and youth groups about my job. They always have such interesting questions! At the time of writing, I am looking forward to Small Business Saturday which takes place on 4th December. Small Business Saturday is an annual event where we showcase the amazing small businesses that are in our community. This year I have teamed up with Shepshed Town Team to help promote some of these businesses, and several have come forward to offer discounts on the day itself. I am grateful to all the businesses that are taking part in the scheme, including the Bull & Bush, Field Street Fitness, Little India, Ryatt Optometry, Finkins, Urban Farm Shop, Shepshed Community Café and Beauty to You. By the time you read this, Small Business Saturday will likely be over, but I hope you will still consider supporting these businesses. December is a crucial month for many small businesses, so I hope you will consider shopping locally. The 4th December also sees the start of the Alternative Christmas Tree Festival in Shepshed. I am looking forward to seeing all the entries and my huge thanks goes to the Rotary Club of Shepshed who are organising the event. As with all Rotary event, the money goes to worthy local causes. I am also looking forward to the Hathern Christmas Tree Festival at St Peter & St Paul Church. I am particularly looking forward to it this year after a break last year due to the pandemic. It’s another sign that things are returning to normality. Thankfully Christmas is looking very different to last year, and I hope that you enjoy the festive period and enjoy spending time with friends and family. It remains for me to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. As ever, if I can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Christine Radford County Councillor for Shepshed T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com

I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I have taken the decision this year not to help on Christmas Day at the Glenmore Centre after doing it for over 20 years, thought I should hand it over to others. Also a reminder to stay safe during these winter months, it’s getting darker earlier now that the clocks went back. Please ensure everything is locked and secure overnight and when you leave your home. Stay safe. Heritage volunteers’ project wins prestigious award from British Museum A project which saw more than 100 people from diverse groups living and around Loughborough taking a new look at history, heritage and culture have been awarded a prestigious prize by the British Museum. Do You See What I See was developed by Leicestershire County Council’s Heritage & Libraries Participation Team, working in partnership with the council’s market town museums, collections and learning teams. The aim was to engage with new audiences and encourage them to explore and make connection with museum collections. More than 100 people took part, including at-risk young people, adults with learning disabilities, homeless and vulnerable people, the Anand Mangal South Asian women’s group, a Polish community group and members of an independent living group for men from black and minority ethnic backgrounds. They took part in a series of workshops looking at heritage and culture from their own unique viewpoint, as well as sharing their own treasure objects. Winning the regional March Award for the East Midlands was a welldeserved honour for all of those involved in the project, which was awarded at the British Museum on 1st November. Unfortunately I was unable to attend the presentation as I had scrutiny that day. Collapsed Bank – near to Persimmon Homes After much chasing I have received an update regarding the watercourse at Hathern Road. Persimmon is planning to replace the previous bank protection with a new proposal of plastic sheet piling along the watercourse banks. Persimmons have been in discussions with LCC Highways and Structures team. It is hoped that an application for a Land Drainage Consent with County as the Lead Local Flood Authority will be submitted shortly. I have been promised that I shall be kept informed. I am now concerned about the planning application P/21/2424/2 in which Persimmon are asking to verify a condition which was part of the original planning application to carry out improvements at the junction of Shepshed Road Hathern with the A6. They are trying to use Garendon SUE as an excuse for the Kings Gate development not to improve this junction. I often get residents contacting me about the large queues during busy periods at this junction. Persimmon must comply with the condition. Shepshed Refuse and Recycling Tip I am pleased to report that the above reopened on 4th November. The site will initially open 3 days per week (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) from 9am to 4pm. Whilst staffing levels remain challenging, County will keep this under review and look to add the two remaining days (Sunday and Monday) subject to maintaining and increasing on current staffing availability levels. I did keep residents up to date on information regarding this site, if they had contacted me via email, but I do not reply to Facebook or Twitter. Residents can be assured that I was in regular contact with County regarding the opening of this site. I had been assured by county, that the site would reopen. Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) A TTRO is to be made for the following location; Leicester Road. The purpose of the TTRO is to allow Leicestershire County Council to undertake carriageway patching works. The TTRO will incorporate a temporary road closure, temporary parking bay suspensions and temporary prohibition of waiting and loading at any time restrictions.

The duration of the restriction is not anticipated to exceed a period of 1 day commencing on 10th January 2022, 09.00 till 15.00. The works can be viewed on https://one.network/?tm=GB123882985 A TTRO is to be made for the following location Iveshead Road. The purpose of the TTRO is to allow Severn Trent to allow connection to the new development. The duration of the restriction is not anticipated to exceed a period of 3 days commencing on 5th January 5th 2022. The works can be viewed on https://one.network/?tm=GB123896852 Police - Neighbourhood Alert Across Leicestershire and indeed Charnwood the police have reported seeing increase in house burglaries. The modus operandi is to either access the property via an insecure ground floor window or by smashing a window to be able to open the door. The most common time for these burglaries is between 2200 hrs and 0300 hrs. The local beat teams are working with CID colleagues to develop intelligence subjects. The police ask that if you see any suspicious activity you call us so that they can send officers to check the area and conduct appropriate stop checks of the individuals. Please use available security devices such as timer lights, security lights, set alarms and remain vigilant. Also ensure that properties are secure now the nights are drawing in. Get in touch with your beat team if you require specific crime prevention advice or head to www.police.uk website for some further advice and useful links. What's happening in our area – Across the Shepshed and Thorpe Acre areas the team have identified that vehicle crime remains the focus. If you are leaving your vehicle unattended, consider removing all valuables and parking in well lit or overlooked areas. Anti-Social Behaviour – the police have received reports of ASB around Gorse Covert and Hall Croft and the team will continue to conduct reassurance patrols around these locations. Night Time Economy Advice – Never lose sight of you drink, it can take only minutes for someone to feel the effects of a spiked drink. Memory loss can be a side effect of many of the drugs used to spike drinks. Many victims are unaware of what has happened to them, and have very little memory of the incident, if any at all. Never leave your drink unattended; never take a drink from a stranger; If you are out with friends, keep an eye out for them. The police would like to introduce PC 1365 Stu Venables who has replaced PC 1128 Megan Evans. Raising awareness of common types of teenage cancer A booklet explaining awareness of cancer in teenagers has been created by teenagers from Leicestershire. The booklet covers Hodgkin & Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Thyroid cancer, what is leukaemia, Brain tumours, Testicular Cancer, Bowel cancer, Melanoma and Bone cancer. I have a contact telephone number for a nurses helpline which is 0808 800 4040. The revenue from the timber will be invested back into the Outwoods. Continuing with this project will ensure the Outwoods can be restored to its former glory of an acid oak woodland and enjoyed by future generations. Woodlands need to be carefully managed, and this scheme will bring many long-term benefits to Outwoods and the local wildlife. The Outwoods is 110 acres of ancient woodland to the south of Loughborough and is one of the oldest woodland sites in Charnwood. For more information and the latest updates about the project visit www.
