Cystitis is a common bladder problem that affects as many as one in five women. Usually the first indication that something’s wrong is the need to visit the bathroom more frequently, which, let’s face it, often hurts and never quite gives relief. As well as the constant urge to pee and a painful burning sensation when you do pee, cystitis symptoms can also include pain or pressure in your lower belly, you may feel sick or achy (backache is common) and your pee may be darker or smell stronger than usual. So, what to do?

Taking The Sting Out Of Cystitis

The snake design running tight around brick course, making it look like its traveling around the border.

First things first, increase your fluid intake. Aim for at least 2 litres of water daily, preferably still water, to flush through. In addition to your H2O, drink unsweetened cranberry juice daily. Sweetened drinks simply increase your sugar intake and will encourage the growth of bacteria. Biotta Mountain Cranberry Juice is naturally strong and sour in flavour. Although the science is mixed and not all experts agree on their efficacy, cranberries have been used over the years to help support bladder health. If you’re not keen on the taste of cranberry juice, A.Vogel’s Cranberry Complex Tablets are a concentrated source of freshly harvested cranberries. Each tablet contains the equivalent of 7.5g of fresh cranberries. Another bladder-friendly berry is Uvaursi or Bearberry. A small woody shrub native to Switzerland, Uva-ursi was thought to be a favourite bear snack hence the catchy alias. A.Vogel’s Uvaursi and Echinacea Complex can be used to relieve symptoms associated with urinary tract infections. Echinacea provides additional immune support. Finally, chemicals in personal care products, such as intimate washes and soaps, can also cause cystitis so keep these to a minimum or seek out natural alternatives. If symptoms do not improve within 48 hours or are recurrent, or if there is blood in your urine or a fever is present, consult your GP or healthcare provider.

Space around the design to give it its the illusion its moving on top.

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling

We are following Government guidelines and strict safety measures for visiting in your homes. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you. (Previously Kornerstone Legal Services) Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

If anyone would like to become a Member of the CIU, please wait until we open our doors for you to purchase.

The Wings Hairdressing Salon

Since introducing The Wings - our replacement autism unit and brand new SEMH unit (Social, Emotional & Mental Health) - back in October, staff and students have been settling in. Dru Pitts, Faculty Director, tells us more about it.

Despite the challenges we have faced in Inclusive Provision, this term has seen students working diligently in a range of activities. The Transition group is settling in and it has been my pleasure to award “Student Of The Week” to various students for conscientious efforts academically and socially, with acts of kindness shown by many. We have introduced a social skills programme into their curriculum which the students are engaging well with.

In Year 9 to Year 11 students have been working hard with a range of Aim Qualifications. With COVID-secure risk assessments in place, we have been able to carry out our qualifications in Hairdressing and Catering in the new Wings unit. The Wings facilities have given our students a wonderful opportunity to engage in these vocational areas. We look forward to our students being successful throughout the rest of the year. Well done to all staff and students involved in the development of this new faculty!

Keith Harris Borough Councillor for Hathern

T: 01509 557701 E: cllr.keith.harris@charnwood.gov.uk I have been helping out as a marshal at the vaccination centre since it opened and that has given me a good insight into how the process works. I would like to tell you about the various stages so that any of you who are still to have your jab will be less apprehensive. Marshals will guide you throughout from the entrance ramp to the exit. Wheelchairs are available if you feel that will help you get round more easily. You will be greeted at the door, asked if you have any Covid symptoms and given some sanitiser. A second marshal will guide you to Reception, where they check your identity and describe the other stages. The third marshal guides you to the Consent section, either directly if a doctor is free or to the waiting area if not. In this stage a doctor asks you some medical questions and explains possible effects, such as mild and short-lived flu symptoms and/or a sore arm. If there is no reason why you shouldn’t have the jab, you are guided to another waiting area, where you get your coat off and roll your sleeve up for the vaccination. After your jab, you are escorted to the Observation area, where you wait for 15 minutes in case you have an adverse reaction. There have been no such serious reactions in over 6 million jabs so far. When the beeper goes off, you are free to go. That 6 million figure should be doubled by the time you read this. So the rollout is going well and the light is flickering ever more at the end of this dismal tunnel. So that is RECEPTION – CONSENT – JAB - OBSERVATION. The centre is in part of the council building at Southfields. Most of the officers are working from home and so the council had space to accommodate the centre. You can park in the council car park. There is a one-way system in the centre. The exit goes down four steps and then through Southfields Park onto Leicester Road, from where it is just a few yards back into the car park. They prefer as many people to exit that way as possible but, if you have mobility problems and can’t manage the steps or the distance, yet more marshals are on hand to guide you back to the entrance and the car park. If you are OK on your feet, then it is a good idea to look if there is a space on Leicester Road. You can park free there for up to 2 hours and it is quicker than walking back round to the car park. Today, January 26th, we used the Astra Zeneca/Oxford vaccine for the second time. With this vaccine you don’t have to wait at the end for 15 minutes unless you are driving back. Passengers don’t need to do this, so if someone drives you there and back you can leave straight after the jab. Therefore, whether you have to wait will depend on which vaccine you have. You can’t choose, unfortunately. Each day it is one or the other. The system is designed to have a steady flow of patients throughout the day and you should be out again in about half an hour if all runs smoothly. Occasionally we have a log jam for a few minutes but it soon clears away. Please bring details of your medication if you think you won’t be able to remember them or pronounce them!! It helps the flow if you have a suitable top on. Ideally tops should be short-sleeved and floppy so that easy access to the top of your arm can be facilitated. I have done 13 shifts so far up to January 25th. The patients are very impressed with the organisation and many comment very positively. I hope that this description will mean that you are prepared for the various stages and that you will feel better about going when your appointment comes. We had to keep the library closed. The next review nationally is in March and so we won’t be open before then. In the meantime, you can download the BorrowBox app and download ebooks and audiobooks. The bin problem I wrote about last month has not improved. A parish councillor took a photo of a bin on Wide Lane, which contained a large milk carton and another large bottle. The bin was crammed. I find it hard to fathom why someone would be walking down Wide Lane with a litre carton of milk and would feel to need to dump it in a street bin. Would all residents please use their domestic bins for such waste and avoid filling the street ones with large items? I was unable to get another bin for the village. Each extra bin incurs extra cost for emptying and CBC has a hefty hole in its finances due to Covid. The bins are emptied twice a week and so should not be overflowing all the time despite the huge canine population. The doggy bags are small. I know it is grim in lockdown but I urge everyone to be patient and compliant to the rules. Even after you have had your jab, please follow the rules regarding distancing, washing, mask wearing and avoiding contact and unnecessary travel. Let’s relieve the pressure on our amazing doctors and nurses, not forgetting the NHS managers who don’t get mentioned much and who are coping with huge logistical nightmares. Stay safe.

Jane Hunt Member of Parliament

T: 01509 262723 E: jane.hunt.mp@parliament.uk I want to start by thanking everyone in Shepshed and Hathern for all you are doing to tackle coronavirus. The pandemic has affected all our lives; some of us even losing friends and family to this terrible disease. We are currently living with restrictions and it’s important that we continue to follow the guidance. The infection rate is high, and we need to ensure that our NHS is not overwhelmed. However, I note the significant sacrifice everyone has made, and want to see life return to normal as soon as it’s safe to do so. For example, I have been fighting to help the hospitality sector get back on its feet and I am keen to see our pubs, cafes and restaurants back open again as soon as the infection rate goes down. Recently, I spoke in a debate in Westminster about this; arguing that we must do everything in our power to help the hospitality industry through this difficult time, as well other spin-off businesses. I know that many residents locally have been concerned about flooding, which again has been a problem, particularly in Hathern. My office has been raising this issue with local councils and the Environment Agency. My caseworker Julie Mather has been investigating solutions to the flooding problems. Last year the County Council jetted the culvert under the A6 in Hathern and installed a cattle grid to capture soil run off from a nearby field. However, following a recent storm event, the A6 once again saw significant flooding, which resulted in a road closure and diversions. Julie has written, on my behalf, to the County Council outlining the importance of this road as a main trunk access road into Loughborough from the north. She has asked them to investigate long term solutions to this problem such as installing a new wider culvert. We are currently awaiting feedback. Back on coronavirus-related matters, I wanted to end, as I did in my last column, on a note of positivity. Since December, we’ve seen some encouraging `numbers regarding vaccines. At the time of writing, over 5 million people nationally have been vaccinated, and locally staff at the new vaccination centre in Loughborough have been administering vaccines to the top priority groups. Loughborough has also become the home of the latest Lighthouse Lab, where thousands of Covid tests are being processed. Both of these are weapons in our arsenal helping us to defeat this disease and shows how our area is helping in the great national effort to return life to normal. I am hoping we can all start to return to normality again in later this year – something that I am sure will be welcomed be all. Finally, as ever, if you require any help or assistance, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

As you know the UK left the EU on December 31st 2020. We are all hoping that this will bring opportunities that will benefit our town. Unfortunately the COVID virus is getting out of control, but we have the hope that the vaccine will bring an end to the way we are living at the moment. into the IBA area. Rearrangement of external ancillary equipment and internal site roadways. Generator Project Acquires Building A long-anticipated Loughborough regeneration project has taken a huge step forward with the successful acquisition of the Old Art College building from Loughborough University. The Generator Loughborough project to restore and reuse the building on Frederick Street is the result of a partnership between the private and voluntary sectors. The community interest company (CIC) has teamed up with local developer Our Neighbourhood to buy the old Art College Building from the university. Our Neighbourhood will build on their success with refurbishments at Canal House and Jason Works in the town to create exciting workspaces for local creative businesses in the four storey block together with a coffee shop on the ground floor. The CIC will secure public funds to restore the full height Generator Hall on Packe Street to create a multi-media arts venue for live performances, exhibitions and events as well as a permanent home for the much respected community arts organisation, Charnwood Arts. Work on the four-storey block has already started with the first entrants expected to be in occupation in January. The CIC has already received generous support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Architectural Heritage Fund, the LLEP, SIBV, Loughborough University and Charnwood Borough Council. It will prepare detailed plans over the next few months and apply for further funding which it hopes will allow the works to start in Autumn 2021. The acquisition of the building comes as the project is also included in the Loughborough Town Deal Investment Plan. £2.6 Million Gateway Scheme In Loughborough Approved And Will Support Town’s Recovery A regeneration scheme for Loughborough town centre has received the final go-ahead and work was due to start in January. Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet appointed a contractor to carry out work on the £2.6 million Bedford Square Gateway Project. The project will see footpaths widened and re-paved to create a high-quality and attractive street scene which will showcase the area’s distinct character and heritage. Character street lighting and furniture would also be added and more of the area would be on one level making it more accessible. A large open space in Devonshire Square will be created to host events and markets. The scheme is now getting underway. It will transform the area around Bedford Square, Ward’s End and Devonshire Square into a much more welcoming and inviting gateway for people visiting the town centre. Charnwood Community Heroes Individuals, community groups and businesses have been honoured in a virtual celebration for this year’s Charnwood Community Heroes. The virtual event took place on Saturday December 12th. Alison Sharp who runs the community bus in Shepshed won an honour as a Good Neighbour, for all the work in supporting residents during lockdown by doing their shopping, collecting their prescriptions etc., People can find out more about Charnwood Community Heroes by visiting www.charnwood.gov.uk/heroes or visit the Charnwood Community Heroes Facebook page www.facebook.com/ CharnwoodCommunityHeroes

Shepshed & District Camera Club

The Mystery Of The Lounds

Apart from a two week Christmas break in late December the members of Shepshed and District Camera Club are still continuing to meet online each Tuesday evening via Zoom enjoying a variety of meetings and subjects.

For people of a certain age travelling from Shepshed to Hathern, the Lounds will mean the long ascent from the Black Brook at Shepshed Mill. It reaches a plateau before culminating in the sharp descent to the A6 trunk road at Hathern.

Back in late November four club members, Jason Armatine, Garry Rennocks, Pete Richardson and Mick Jelly gave an excellent illustrated talk, with advice, on the very popular subject of “Street Photography” with a variety of images they had taken from various places in the U.K. The following week the members enjoyed a talk online entitled “In Search Of Charlie Curnow” It’s actually a bit of a trick, the title of this talk. Charlie Curnow is a fictitious character who appears as ‘the hero’ in a series of books written by Alan M. Kent and set in Cornwall. Not perhaps, the part of Cornwall the members might have been familiar with but a part that would not seem so different from the village in Wales where Alan Harris was born and grew up. It was a both interesting and very entertaining talk.

In fact the Lounds denotes much more than this. It applies to a considerable swathe of land alongside the road, exemplified by the Lounds Farm visible on the right after rounding the bend at the top of the incline. Intriguingly mystery surrounds the origin and meaning of the name.

Article by Brian Walbey

Usually the Club finishes the year off with the annual dinner and trophy presentations but this year that couldn’t happen because of Covid restrictions so the results of the 2020 Competition League as follows were given out online during December: Open Subject Class: 1st. equal Alan Harris and Garry Rennocks, 2nd. Angela Edwards, 3rd. equal Brian Walbey and Sue Hutton Themed Subject Class: 1st. Alan Harris, 2nd. Angela Edwards, 3rd .equal Garry Rennocks, Brian Walbey and Jason Armatine Overall Championship: 1st. Alan Harris, 2nd. Garry Rennocks, 3rd. Angela Edwards, 4th. Brian Walbey An online groups quiz ended the Autumn term and another groups activity started the Spring term when various members gave demonstrations of processing and editing digital images The second meeting in January was a full length presentation of selected entries from the 2020 Midland Counties Photographic Federation annual exhibition, usually known by all the clubs in the West and West Midlands as ‘Midphot’, an event in which several club members have had photographs selected for display over the past few years, indeed club Chairman Alan Harris who won a major award at the 2020 exhibition.

Article by David Stevenson

Lound stemming from the Old Norse word lundr (a grove) survives as a place name, mainly in eastern England where the influence of Nordic invaders was once strongest. But is this a likely source of the name in our area? Perhaps an alternative explanation must be found. The question had long puzzled me until I tried spelling the name as Lownds. At once a derivation suggested itself. It is easy to imagine that, in an age when literacy was a rare accomplishment and words passed by oral tradition, Lownds could have become a corruption of Low Lands. Interestingly the area is still often referred to as Hathern Lounds. It would make sense if the expression began as Hathern Low Lands. In bygone years Shepshed folk, sheltering in the lea of Iveshead, would have regarded Hathern in the Soar Valley as relatively low land. But if the Lounds originally applied to Hathern, how has it come to relate to its present location? Coun Neil McHugh of Shepshed Mill & Farm has advanced a different and more convincing theory. Researching the Lounds surname and places in Yorkshire and Lancashire that bear the name, he finds that the roots lie with the ancient Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. It relates to when a family established itself in the laund, an Old Norman word signifying an open space in a forest or lawn. Neil reasonably suggests that this may have signified the exposed area between Oakley Wood and Garendon.

The programme continued when Dave Mason, an experienced photographer from Kent, presented his talk on street photography. Dave redefined this topic as "taking unstaged photos of people in the environment". That is showing the world as you find it rather than setting the scene up to be photographed. The environments included town centre streets, but also art galleries, sporting events, seaside promenades and county shows and included several humorous images of people, and animals, with a variety of backdrops.

A definitive local link with the Normans following the Conquest of 1066 was clearly established in 1965 by Anthony J Lacey, Stephen Smith and Derek Jowett. St Botolph’s Church was entrusted to Odo, Bishop of Bayeux and brother of the Conqueror, whilst the Domesday Book of 1089 includes the entry ‘Schepeshefde Regis’ implying that Shepshed may have been a royal manor. Indeed it is possible that the town could successfully claim the title Shepshed Regis if it so desired.

The club continues to meet on Tuesday evenings on Zoom with a full programme for the next few months, further details are available from the Club Chairman at 07733 314605.

Mystery solved then? I believe so. Meanwhile it seems important that the historic name of the Lounds is more widely known and perpetuated in everyday speech.

Self-Kindness Is The Key To Weight Loss, Says Local Slimming Expert Article by Slimming World

Weight loss expert Christina, a Slimming World Consultant who runs the Shepshed morning Slimming World group says that if people want to lose weight for good this year then they need to learn to be kinder to themselves when things go wrong. Christina revealed that a new Slimming World survey of 1,722 slimmers found that almost everyone who had tried to lose weight in the past (98%) had experienced a slip-up where they went off-track in a way that they worried would affect their weight loss journey. After they lapsed, 84% of slimmers automatically criticised themselves, calling themselves ‘weak’, ‘stupid’ and ‘a failure’ – words they would never have used to describe someone else in their position. This harsh criticism was found to lead to comfort eating or giving up on those diets completely. As a result 78% were unsuccessful with their weight loss, with at least 47% gaining weight. The survey found that at Slimming World, members had learned how to reduce how critical they are of themselves when things go wrong and have instead become more self-reassuring. As a result of recognising that they’re only human and applauding their own determination, the research found that Slimming World members are now less likely to comfort eat and more likely to get back on track within a day or two, and more likely to lose weight and keep it off. In the survey, 84% of Slimming World members went on to lose weight after a lapse. Christina, who lost 3 stones and now helps others in Shepshed to shed the pounds, says: “As someone who had struggled with my weight for many years I had tried lots of different diets in the past. Life would always get in the way at some point though and I’d go off track. It would knock my confidence and I’d end up feeling like a failure and like I couldn’t stick at anything. This is my 8th year at my personal Target." “When you have an unhealthy relationship with food, as I did at the time,

comfort eating can feel like the only way to make yourself feel better. I’d turn to take away and cider or beer but afterwards I’d feel even more guilty and empty and before long I’d have given up completely." “Since joining Slimming World my outlook has changed completely. With the support of other people who have experienced the same thing I gradually started to realise that I wasn’t the only one who this happened to. We’re all human and we all have our off days, the important thing is that we’re able forgive ourselves and draw a line under it." “Now if I ever have a lapse I’m careful to always talk to myself as I would any of the members of my group – with encouragement, support and without any judgement or blame. And that’s why the support of a group is so important, as by sharing problems and solutions with other people, you realise that you’re really not alone and you have a network of people like you who really understand and care, to help pick you back up when things go wrong. After all, things will often go wrong, and learning to cope with lapses, forgive yourself and get back on track is the key to successful weight loss in the long-term.” For more information about the local Shepshed Slimming World groups speak to either Christina on 07486532978 for the morning session or the lovely Claire-Lou on 07488243173 for the evening sessions. Once again, we are living and working through unsettling and extraordinary events. It is important that we continue to do all we can to prevent the spread of COVID, to support our communities and to protect the most vulnerable. If you can, you should continue to work from home. I hope that you and your loved ones are keeping safe and well and a Happy New Year to you all during these hard times of COVID. Keep safe everybody, keep following the COVID rules It is very important that we all take care and protect ourselves as well as safely carrying on the great work we are doing in supporting our communities. Police There have been some reports of burglaries in the area, the numbers are low but in this holiday period can I just remind everyone to keep your properties and vehicles safe, lock your doors, leave lights/radios on, and don’t leave valuables in your vehicles. The ASB we had been experiencing has been reduced considerably with positive action the police have taken against a select few youths and the police continue to work with partner agencies to keep this so. One aspect of policing is around Mental Health and wellbeing. The police have an excellent MH triage car that operates day and night until the early hours. This year has been particularly difficult for many, mental health is still a taboo subject for some and people feel ashamed to admit they have issues. Please don’t, there are support services that can help and I urge you to contact them if you are feeling low. Speak to someone; never think that a problem can’t be solved. Samaritans – www.samaritans.org or 07725909090. Lane and how this is situated at a blind bend. Also residents have concerns about the amount of HGV’s travelling over the old railway bridge which might not be able to take such heavy traffic before it collapses. I can assure you, I contact County on a regular basis regarding these issues but they cannot see that there is a problem. Let us hope nobody gets hurt or killed before something is done. Flooding There has been an ongoing issue at the X roads on the A512 with Iveshead and Charnwood Road. I was hoping that the improvements here would solve this problem. It has not helped that over the years more properties have been allowed to be built off of Iveshead Road. Support For Community Pubs County recognise that rural pubs are at the heart of many Leicestershire communities – and as part of County’s commitment in helping businesses during these tough times, pubs struggling during the pandemic will have the opportunity to apply for our new fund. I have been working with local pubs as County are offering a one-off payment of £1,000 to support small village pubs which are unable to open their doors over the festive period. To date 3 pubs have been supported with this grant. This is over and above the grant that the Government are doing. Call For People To Share Memories Of Loughborough Fair People are being urged to share their memories of Loughborough Market and Fair as part of plans to celebrate its 800th anniversary this year. The first fair was held in Loughborough on July 31st 1221 to mark the feast day of St Peter. It was in the same year that a charter to hold a market in Loughborough was granted to the Lord of the Manor. Both a market and a fair have taken place in some form in Loughborough since that date. To mark the occasion, Charnwood Museum will host an exhibition to celebrate the milestone. People are being asked to share their memories, pictures, films and memorabilia for use in the exhibition and as part of an archive. The exhibition is a partnership between Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council, with Loughborough Local Studies Volunteers leading on the historical research. Organisers of the exhibition want to hear from people of all ages who have memories of the fair – whether from many years back or much more recent. No memory is too small or insignificant for inclusion, as the organisers are hoping to include as much of the sights, sounds and smells of the fair as they can.

Scams Involving Coronavirus Vaccinations Action Fraud has received a number of reports from members of the public who have been sent text messages claiming to be from the NHS, offering them the opportunity to sign up for coronavirus vaccinations. The texts ask the recipient to click on a link which takes them on an online form where they are prompted to input personal and financial details. In some cases the online form has looked very similar to the real NHS website.

As well as sharing the memories in the exhibition, they will also be used to create a community film, add to the East Midlands Oral History Archive and catalogue in the archives at the Record Office for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The NHS will never ask for your bank account or card details, ask for your PIN or banking passwords, REMEMBER THE VACCINATIONS ARE FREE OF CHARGE AND YOU WILL NOT BE ASKED FOR A PAYMENT.

My position at County which involves Heritage, meant I was interviewed by both Fosse 107 and Radio Leicester about my memories of going to the fair, the smells, sounds and the sights talking about it brought back many happy memories.

Please share this warning to protect others, especially the elderly neighbours or vulnerable people. Tickow Lane My emails contain concerns residents have regarding Tickow Lane and the speed of the traffic on the narrow section from Anson Road to the new section of road. The areas where K62 footpath crosses Tickow

The Nottingham’s Shepshed team has made a gesture that will put smiles on the faces of local children this Christmas – buying 45 advent calendars to be included in food packages being delivered to families in the area. When the building society made charitable funds available and asked its branches to nominate projects that help the most vulnerable in their communities the team at the Leicestershire location decided to support Shepshed Food Bank.

Christmas Tree Festival A Huge Success! Article by Ngaire Hall

The Rotary Club of Shepshed held their Alternative Christmas Tree Festival on the weekend of 5th and 6th December and hailed it a huge success, raising over £840 for local and international good causes. The popular event, which for many years has been held in St. Botolph’s Church, was in danger of closing due to Covid-19 restrictions. The members of the Club decided to stage the event out and about in Shepshed instead, encouraging entrants to display a tree at their school, organisation or residence. On a cold but mainly dry weekend, over 30 creative entries were on show, attracting much interest from families and individuals visiting the displays. Locals voted St. Botolph’s Primary the winner in the schools’ category and Jo Oakley the winner in households. Joint winners of organisations were the Willows Care Home and Shepshed Fairy Garden. Rotarian Phil Marriott, who coordinated the event, said ‘We were delighted with the community spirit on display during the festival. The event sparked a great deal of interest and we shall certainly run this again next year, hopefully in conjunction with our usual festival inside St. Botolph’s Church. We hope to widen the entry criteria and attract even more participants!’ Liz Marshall, President of the Rotary Club of Shepshed, also commented ‘After such a gloomy year, the festival provided a real lift and kicked off the festive spirit in style. We would like to thank all those who entered, the retail outlets of Dilip’s Multi Store, Meet ‘N’ Eat, Finkins and Numark Pharmacy who sold programmes, TaxAssist Accountants for their generous donation and loan of their office, and all those who supported and attended the event. It surpassed all of our expectations!’ The Rotary Club of Shepshed always welcome new members. If you are interested in finding out further information on a no-obligation basis, please email shepshedrotary@gmail.com or telephone Phil Marriott on 07585 127962.

PHOTO: Customer Services Consultant Bethan Johnson hands over a cheque for £100 to Glennis Wilcox from Shepshed Food Bank.

In recent years they have supported the charity via in-branch food collections, however the Covid-19 pandemic made that difficult to deliver so the donation of £100 was made instead. Customer Services Consultant Bethan Johnson said: “We’re really happy to be able to donate the money to Shepshed Food Bank and to help raise the Christmas spirits of local children who need it the most. As a branch team we are also really proud to work for an organisation that continues, even at a time when everyone is facing extra challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic, to play a key role in supporting those who are most at need or vulnerable.” To find out more about the fantastic work of Shepshed Food Bank visit www.shepshedfoodbank.co.uk

Shepshed Schools Benefit From A Gift In 1952 Article by Mike Elliman The Bernard Thorpe Educational Foundation held its annual meeting by Zoom this year (2020), but the tangible grants were as real as ever. The Foundation was established in 1952 following the grateful gift to Shepshed of a bequest by Bernard Thorpe, who spent his early teaching years in the village and died in 1951. Each year Grants are awarded to local schools who make bids to the Trustees of the Foundation. This year grants varied from football kits, pull-up bars, clarinets, a wood turning lathe and chuck, art aprons, to visualisers, a projector and other requested items. Mr Thorpe so appreciated the support he received when a trainee school teacher at Shepshed, he wanted to give thanks to the village in a practical way for future generations. The awards are towards items not normally provided by LEA funding and are for groups of pupils, not individuals. Clearly gifts don’t always come from the man with a white beard!
