Passion Youth Project - Just A Quick Update Article by Vicky Gould
Drop in has been open a few weeks now. We have been very well received by the young people of Shepshed. They have had a very tough year, as we all have. We have started to get new faces coming in which is always a good sign that the young people like coming to us. How else would they know we are here? We are currently helping young people seeking employment, education, and training. These are an important part of Passions work. To get young people to believe in themselves and see them as we do. Therefore, we have renamed the homework club into being the support café. If you would like to help with this part of Passion, please get in touch. Shepshed Community café has been gathering momentum over the last few weeks. We have around 7 young people that have committed their time to this project. This has included weekend time. Thank you for Norword Press for their donation of £50 towards a new sandwich press. Also, John Savage, the local councillor, who donated his £500 members grant towards the purchase of a food processor and a coffee machine. Also, personal donators that continue to support this venture. If you would like to help with this part of Passion, please get in touch. Stay safe and take care.

The Rotary Club Of Shepshed Charnwood Donated And Constructed A Summerhouse For The Shepshed Volunteer Centre’s Well-Being Garden Article by Candi Barnes
We would like to say a big thank to the Rotary Club of Shepshed Charnwood for the donation of a new summerhouse for our Well-Being Garden. Not only did they donate the Summer House, they also constructed it. Look at what a wonderful job they have done! We could not be more pleased, it is an amazing addition to our Garden. The Well-Being Garden was created to give space for those in our community who are in need of a place to go for company, a bit of gardening or just a cuppa and a quiet place to sit. If you want to know more, please feel free to contact Shepshed Volunteer Centre on 01509 508040.

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling
Our frontline staff follow Government guidelines for visiting you in your home and they are in the vaccination program with second course completed. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you. Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually.
Norwood Press Donation Update Article by Norwood Press
So far we have managed to help many groups and charities in the area. Here are some of the groups we have helped so far: • Shepshed Litter Pickers - New equipment and Hi-Vis jackets • Ratby Band - New junior / beginner music • 1st Anstey Guides - Days out and camp • Passion Youth Project Shepshed - New waffle maker for their cafe • Shepshed Toy Library - Childrens toys • Linda Barks - Knitting supplies • Glenfield Bowling Club - New signage • Shepshed Dolphin Swimming Group - Leaflet printing • Jean Bates Yarn Angels - Knitting supplies
But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.
LEAFLETS - BUSINESS CARDS - LETTERHEADS MAGAZINES - BROCHURES - BOOKLETS "Thank you for your extremely kind donation. We are very lucky to have the lovely Emma and Andy who own Knotty Knits and Creative Krafts in Loughborough supporting us and they have given us an amazing deal on 100 balls of assorted baby wool for £100 ! This will be used to create baby clothes, baby blankets and small knitted toys for InterCare based in Syston. This charity raises money to send medical aid to hospitals and clinics in Africa. Each box is lined with a blanket and the small knitted items are used as packing instead of bubble wrap or polystyrene which can't be recycled there. It will also be used to make warm baby hats for asylum seeker and refugee families who arrive here with virtually nothing but what they stand up in. Thank you again Norwood Press for this donation. It will help many people who through no fault of their own are not able to help themselves. Our very best wishes for another 70 years in business." Jean Bates and Yarn Angels

Als Electronic Shepshed Experience Article by Allan Dobb
Shepshed Welcomes New LifeSaving Equipment From M1 J23 And A512 Improvements Scheme Article by Brenda Snape
Shepshed residents have welcomed a new addition to Glenmore Park, now home to a new community defibrillator. As part of their work on the M1 J23 and A512 Improvements Scheme, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure has funded a defibrillator and access cabinet for the Shepshed community. Accessible for all residents local to Glenmore Park, fast access to the device will play a vital role in saving lives. Beth Miles, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure’s Public Liaison Officer, has worked closely with Shepshed Town Council and Bob Lilley, Coordinator of the Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders, to agree the location, situated within the residential area to facilitate fast access in an emergency. Once installed, the cabinet will be located in the car park at Glenmore Park and will be regularly maintained.
I find the art of book writing fascinating from the ideas to rewrite and then getting it out there for you and I to enjoy. To find 2 authoresses locally and at the beginning of their journeys is amazing. Listen out through the podcasts for both of their progress, next up I suppose will be the book signings. On the second Tuesday in the month the Shepshed Cancer Support group meets up, and do try and get along if you are involved in Caring or treatment. It’s a very informal group with Bingo and a chat, no tea or coffee yet, but as soon as the total restrictions lift brewing will commence. Thanks goes to Marion and the hard work she put in for this group to continue. I look forward to the weeks ahead and the progress of this project to promote Shepshed and the surrounding communities.. back next month, but give it a listen/watch do get on board; Al’s Electronic Shepshed Experience.
om e
s you!
PHOTO: The defibrillator was presented by Sanoj Lutchman, site agent at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure (pictured far right) to Chairman of Shepshed Town Council, Cllr Peter Grainger (pictured left of Sanoj), also present were Leicestershire County Councillor, Christine Radford and Bob Lilley (Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders)
May saw the podcast with 2 authoresses in Shepshed. One in Kirsty Fox who’s book is out there and selling well. The other Lizzie Thomas who has had her book idea accepted, but it has to be illustrated and then the first print. Both are books aimed at children, but us adults can take a sneaky peak. I have purchased Kirsty’s book on Kindle, but it is available on all the other platforms. The illustrations have all been drawn by Kirsty and complement her story effectively.

Shepshed Slimmers Come Back Together After Months Of Virtual Slimming Article by Shepshed Slimming World Group
Slimmers from Shepshed are making a ‘comeback’ as their Slimming World group reopens, with Christina & Claire Lou local Slimming World Consultants saying they’re excited to be back helping members to lose weight and improve their health in person. Slimming World has been supporting members virtually in online weekly groups since March, when lockdown closed all of the organisation’s community groups. Now, following the current easing of restrictions in many areas, real-life groups are beginning to reopen step-by-step. Christina & Claire Lou Slimming World Consultants in Shepshed are putting measures in place to ensure groups comply fully with government and local guidance and that their members can return safely to their much-loved Slimming World groups. Christina says: “I’m delighted to finally be back together with my members! Our virtual groups have been a vital lifeline of support and I’m so, so proud of how my members have been there for each other through these difficult months and continued to lose weight and get more active. There’s nothing quite like the magic of our real-life groups, though, and research of our members during lockdown has shown that while our members have loved attending their virtual groups they’ve missed the motivational power and accountability of meeting in person each week.” She says the health and safety of members has been the team’s top priority in planning the return of Shepshed Slimming World groups: “Members will find a few things have changed in our groups to ensure that everyone feels as safe, confident and comfortable as they possibly can. This includes appropriate social distancing, hygiene measures and shorter sessions, which we’ll be asking members to book in to before attending. What hasn’t changed is the gorgeous warm welcome, feeling of togetherness and the joy
of being ‘in it together’ week on week. “As well as looking forward to ‘that feeling’ of being back together with our existing Slimming World members, we can’t wait to welcome new members in Shepshed to our groups too. Obesity is a huge issue in the news at the moment with evidence showing that carrying extra weight makes it harder for the body to fight COVID-19, and the Government announcing brand-new plans to tackle obesity across the UK – which Slimming World are very proud be part of. Plus, we know many people’s routines were turned upside down by lockdown and lots of us have been feeling more worried or anxious than usual, all of which can have an impact on making healthy choices.” Christina, who has lost 3 and a half stone herself, says: “I want anyone who’s worrying about their weight or health – especially if they’ve put on a few extra pounds during lockdown – to know that there will be absolutely no judgement at a Slimming World group – just lots of understanding and a very warm welcome. At Slimming World losing weight isn’t about going hungry – our eating plan is extra easy, very delicious and super generous. And moving more doesn’t mean running marathons – unless you want to, of course. “Our groups are hubs of recipe-swapping, idea-sharing and problem-solving activity. Through our weekly sessions, you’ll discover how to identify the stoppers and potential pitfalls that could send you off track – or that have maybe prevented you from reaching your weight-loss goals in the past – and learn to develop strategies to overcome them. The new healthy habits you’ll discover will soon become habits of a lifetime, and there really is no better time to start afresh when it comes to developing new lifelong healthy habits around food and activity because, as many of the members of my groups have seen, when you lose weight you’re already doing one of the very best things you can to future-proof your health.” Shepshed Slimming World groups are open now. Supporting local tourist venues It was English Tourism Week recently, which is a week dedicated to promoting the domestic tourism industry in England. This year, this message is as important as ever. Many venues have been closed for months, whilst others have had to change their plans and significantly alter the way they operate. Of course, this not only affects the venues themselves, but also spin-off businesses and those who rely on them. This is a point I made in a recent Westminster Hall debate when speaking about the hospitality industry, and the same can be said of the tourism industry. The roadmap out of lockdown has now allowed tourist venues to reopen and I hope that we can all give them our support. We have some amazing attractions on our doorstep, such as the Great Central Railway, the John Tayor Bellfoundry and Charnwood Museum. Shortly after reopening, I took a ride on the Great Central Railway and I was very impressed with the measures that they have put in place to ensure the attraction is Covid-secure. And this is true of all attractions locally; a lot of work has been put in to make them safe for visitors. With foreign travel still very much uncertain, now is the perfect time to explore attractions closer to home and support them after what has been a difficult year. Road conditions in Shepshed Recently, I have been contacted by a number of residents about the condition of the highway on Anson Road in Shepshed. I understand that construction traffic is causing damage to the road surface. I have contacted Leicestershire County Council about this, and they have committed to conducting a traffic survey to determine how best to tackle the problem going forward. I have also been in touch with Charnwood Borough Council who have written to the developer to ensure that they adhere to their construction plan. The Police are also monitoring the situation as a number of comments have been made about speeding vehicles. Similarly, I’ve received queries about the condition of Tickow Lane, and some repairs have been undertaken recently. Severn Trent are also investigating a recent water leak in Tickow Lane. The condition of roads is something that is often raised with me, so do get in touch if you are concerned about the state of a road locally. I welcome that in the recent Spending Review, the Chancellor announced that £1.7 billion has been made available for local highway authorities in England for 2021-2022 to improve the condition of local roads and associated infrastructure. The Funding will also support small scale transport enhancements such as road safety and public transport improvements. In addition, a new £2.5 billion Pothole Fund is running between 2020/21 and 2024/25 to help local authorities fill-in around 50 million potholes across the country and stop potholes forming in the first place.
Borough Councillor for Hathern
The amazing Hathern Village Association have excelled themselves yet again. The lockdown rules had only just been relaxed a bit more and they pulled an entire long weekend of events out of the bag. I didn’t know about it when I last wrote. They had to get permission from the parish council to use the park and consult with the borough and county councils to work out how to run the events in accordance with Covid restrictions. I believe that Hathern was the only village to put on events on such a scale, an extraordinary achievement in such a limited time. The community library continues to flourish. Elvira, Gill, Sean and myself had 18 visitors today in the afternoon session. I am delighted to see so many parents bringing their children to take out piles of books. Please come on down. We are still giving out stickers to put in the Bears books when you take books out. We are hoping to be able to restart the various groups such as All Join in for toddlers and Craft and Chat in June if the road map is not derailed by Covid variants. We have lost some volunteers during the pandemic and would love to welcome new people to help keep this wonderful little library open. If you can spare a few hours, even just two hours every three weeks, please get in touch at hatherncommunitylibrary@ gmail.com . You don’t need to be a librarian as you will get an induction and can train on the job. You can also access thousands of digital eBooks, audiobooks, magazines and newspaper titles free from Leicestershire Libraries using Libby, Borrowbox and PressReader. RBdigital to Libby – Rbdigital has been taken over by OverDrive. As a result of this takeover, the RBdigital service has been transferred to Overdrive’s award-winning Libby app. Please link to the Leicestershire Libraries website for instructions on how to download your free ebbooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines and eNewspapers. The library has lost some sources of income. Please consider buying a ticket for the Library Lottery which is run every week. Negotiations between the parish council and William Davis about the adoption of Daisy Bank are not making a lot of progress at the moment. In the meantime I ensured that the new trees were watered during the drought in April. Since then they have not needed any watering!! Should we have any more dry periods in the summer, I will monitor their condition. If any residents notice that they are a bit dry, please feel free to notify the parish councillors or me. Hathern Band are planning a summer concert in Quorn on Sunday 22 August at 3 pm in Stafford Park in Quorn.
Housing development proposal in Hathern I have recently been contacted by the developer William Davis about a planning application they intend to submit to Charnwood Borough Council for 58 dwellings on land off Zouch Road in Hathern. 17 of these would be classed as affordable. They are keen to hear people’s views about the proposal before they finalise the plans and submit a planning application. Further information is also available on the website: www.zouchroadhathern.co.uk. Feedback can be provided via a survey on the website, by emailing consultation@zouchroad-hathern.co.uk or by writing to FREEPOST WDH or calling the Freephone number on 0800 470 3748.
The village footballers are clocking up some impressive victories and are scoring goals for fun. They recently reached the Everard’s Restart Premier Cup final. That’s three finals in as many years. Across the lane Hathern Cricket Club have started their season. Why not pop down to Hathern Park and watch them?
As ever, if I can be of any assistance on any issue, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Congratulations to Betty Newton on her re-election as your County Councillor. She is very happy to serve the community for another four years.

Christine Radford County Councillor for Shepshed T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com
I would like to say thank you to everybody who voted for me and will endeavour to work on your behalf and on behalf of those Shepshed residents who did not vote for me over the next four years. I am also pleased to say I have been promoted to the Cabinet at County to look after Adults social care and heritage leisure and arts. Whilst doing this report we have just come out of special measures and the easing of restrictions which means that people can meet in groups of up to 30 outdoors and six people or two households can meet indoors with overnight stays allowed. BUT we must still be mindful that Covid 19 is still around. During Purdah Councillors are not allowed to do any council work which lasts for the six weeks on the run up to the election. The first meeting after the election was the Full Council which was held on 19th May and face to face. Due to the Covid restrictions, County hired a room at the University in Loughborough. This meeting was held to elect the new Chairman and vice Chairman of the Council for the next twelve months. My first meeting after Full Council was Leicester Safeguarding Adults Board and Leicestershire & Rutland Safeguarding Adults Board Joint Board Meeting. County attractions and services fully back in business The county council’s heritage attractions and cafes was fully back in business, reopening their doors to visitors from Monday 17th May, with libraries also resuming normal hours. Show piece heritage sites, including the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre, (01455 290429) the 1620s House and Garden at Donington-leHealth, as well as Harborough and Melton museums, are also welcoming visitors on a pre-booked basis. Also resuming services were the cafes at Beacon Hill Country Park and Snibston Colliery Park and the 1485 Tithe Barn at Bosworth as they welcomed their first visitors inside the facilities for the first time in more than six months. Although improvement work is continuing at the Century Theatre Coalville, which was first closed its doors back in March 2020, the theatre is once again able to offer performing arts classes and studio workshops to people of all ages. Beaumanor Hall resumed educational visits and residential from May 19th and plan to start events from 20th June. The record office and search room is open for pre-booked visitors. For opening times call 0116 2571080. Council run libraries resumed normal hours from 17th May. The easing of lock down has allowed the county council’s adult social care team to continue activities with the people who they have supported – along with their families – throughout the pandemic. Some activities will resume and the easing will also allow more face-to-face visits to take place, however, the council is aware that many people have benefited from more ‘virtual’ contact, such as Zoom calls and phone chats, which the County will continue with now and in the future. Kirkhill, Sewerage Leak Just to bring residents up to date regarding the leakage of sewerage at the bottom of Kirkhill. I would like to confirm that the problem was found to be an unconnected pipe which has been sorted and signed off. BUT I ask if residents see a problem then please get in contact as I now have a good contact at Severn Trent Water who will chase this up. St. Botolphs school crossing The last patrol at St Botolphs left in November 2020 and as yet has not been replaced. The site is due for an assessment, which is to be carried out shortly to make sure that it still meets criteria for a school crossing patrol provision. It is standard procedure that these assessments are carried out when a patrol relinquishes their position. I have asked county to send their enforcement camera car to keep an eye on the area as I am receiving a large number of concerns raised by parents that cars are not adhering to the double yellow lines, this is also an issue within the school campus area especially near to the zebra crossing. I ask that parents are mindful of how they are parking when dropping off their children at school we do not want a child hurt or killed do we!!

The latest data on deliverable housing land supply show Charnwood have a total of 3.34 years of supply against the recently updated nationally set local housing need figure of 1,111 homes a year. This means the Council cannot demonstrate a five-year supply housing as of 31st March 2021. The position at the last update November 2020 showed 4.1 years of supply as of 31st March 2020 and the lack of supply continues to have consequences for the way planning decisions are made. Factors include the rate of homes that are built. There are enough homes with planning permission in Charnwood to meet the new five-year housing need target twice over but these sites are not due to deliver sufficient homes in the next five years. Developers and market forces determine the rate of delivery, not the Council. This means more houses for Shepshed. If we are going to get more houses, we need to make sure we get the most from the Developers for the people of Shepshed. Free Parking Boost to support businesses in Loughborough Charnwood Borough Council has introduce free parking for up to an hour

New town centre hub will boost careers in Charnwood A Careers and Enterprise Hub has opened its doors in the heart of Loughborough to help local people enhance their skills to access the careers market, progress in their existing careers or launch a new business idea. The Hub which is run by specialist advisors from Loughborough College and Loughborough University, has opened thanks to a £750,000 funding boost through the Loughborough Town Deal. The Hub teams will offer advice, guidance and support to help people develop their skills to boost the local and regional economy as it bounces back from the impact of Covid. The Loughborough College team is supporting local people by advising them on education and training pathways to boost their skills. As well as education training, the Hub team can advise on CV letter writing, plus helping people sharpen their interview skills. The hub has taken an empty building in a key central location and gives it a new lease of life. For opening times and more information, please visit www.loucoll.ac.ukcareers-hub and to book a visit, email the team at careershub@loucoll.ac.uk Restart Grants for Businesses now available Around £4.5 million has been paid to nearly 600 businesses in Charnwood by the borough council under the Covid-19 Restart Grant scheme, but more companies are being urged to come forward. The Restart Grant scheme supports businesses that offer in-person services, have a business rates account and have been forced to close under Covid restrictions. Examples of the types of businesses include pubs, cafes and restaurants, hair salons and venues. Unlike some other grants where the Council has been able to make automatic payments to local companies, the Restart Grant requires all companies to fill in an application form.
