Shepshed & District Camera Club

Protecting Your Family Inheritance

Shepshed & District Camera Club returned from its Christmas break with talks and the first round of this year’s competition.

Our frontline staff follow Government guidelines for visiting you in your home and they are fully vaccinated. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you.

Article by Kevin Moore

The 1st talk of the year was on 11th January presented by club member John Clark. John gave a very entertaining presentation of his trip to Vietnam and Cambodia. On Tuesday 18th January Carol McGiven Young gave a fascinating talk called Total Immersion. This showed how Carol creates pictures from the photographs she has taken using photo editing software. The first round of the internal competitions took place on Tuesday 25th January and was judged by Louise Langley. The standard of photographs was very high and after much deliberation the judge chose the following to receive awards; Creative (Projected Images) 1st Alan Harris – Buttermere Impression 2nd Garry Rennocks – The Mask 3rd Chris Bravington – The Red Tree Highly Commended - Mick Jelly Autumn & Passing Time. Open Category (Prints) 1st Garry Rennocks – Angel Abstract 2nd Mick Jelly – A Cornish Cove 3rd Martin Wyatt - Golden Eagle Highly Commended – Alan Harris – Mr & Mrs & Whisper in my Ear, Dear. Mandy Sheringham from Sileby Photographic Society gave an interesting talk on 1st February about her trip to Sri Lanka showing pictures of the architecture and wildlife. New members are always welcome and further information, including the programme for this year, can be found on the club’s website. www.shepshedcameraclub.co.uk

Shepshed History Society Article by Marjorie Schulz

A very informative and amusing talk was given to the Shepshed History Society on the 8th February by Mrs Sandy Leong, her subject being an insight into the history of tea and was entitled 'A Nice Cup Of Tea' Sandy explained how tea had been drunk for thousands of years and had originated in China with Japan and India soon to follow suit. But Britain never managed to achieve favourable results owing to our inclement weather. Tea eventually came to the forefront in Britain in the 1600's and tea smuggling became a thriving industry at the same time as tea had an exorbitant tax on it and was so expensive, hence the reason the upper class would lock it up to stop the servants helping themselves. As India was part of the British Empire we were able to use thousands of tons of opium in payment for our own tea imports. Countless interesting tales were related by Sandy as the evening went on and it was a very enjoyable talk. The March speaker on the 8th will be Chris Hossack and the talk is entitled 'Gt. Grandad the Dam Builder in the 1800's. New members welcome as always..

Article by Klara Dixon

Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

Keith Harris

Borough Councillor for Hathern T: 01509 557701 E: cllr.keith.harris@charnwood.gov.uk

Our wonderful little community library was six years old in January, but Omicron was still lurking ominously and we decided to postpone the celebrations until March. There will be a birthday party on March 12th from 1 to 3 with cakes, including some cupcakes and millionaire’s shortbread baked by my Mum, the latter delicacy recently described by Sean Hale as ‘divine’. Please come along and try some and meet the tireless volunteers and other residents. There will be children’s craft activities organised, a tombola and a book sale. The library is also celebrating Science Week in March. After my appeal in my last article, local resident and Loughborough University lecturer, Simon Kondrat volunteered (without any arm-twisting at all) to do a talk on chemistry. He will no doubt be wowing us with amazing facts about those wonderful compounds which sometimes have a bad press (sometimes deserved) but which enhance our lives in so many ways. The talk will start at 7 pm with the title ‘Size matters : how nanotechnology is different.’ So Simon will be blowing our brains with things so small we can’t get our heads round them. Don’t forget the other activities in this lovely little hub. The Craft and Chat group meet every Wednesday from 2 to 4. This is their blurb – Why not pop along to the library and meet other crafters over a cuppa and some cake?! Bring along your current project, whether it’s knitting, crochet, embroidery or any other craft. We’d love to see what you’re working on! The All Join In event happens every second Thursday at 10.30, lasting about 30 minutes. Our relaxed, friendly rhyme sessions for babies and toddlers are a chance for you to have fun, share rhymes and songs with your child, and to meet other parents. Sessions are run by library volunteers, and involve a mix of songs, rhymes, rhythm and movement, while also providing the opportunity to share books and toys. Every Monday from 2 to 4 there is an Art Group. Group members bring their own materials and ideas and support each other in whatever they are doing. There is also a Reading Group, which meets once a month on a Tuesday evening. I hear that, unlike the one in Dibley, most of the participants actually read the books and enjoy putting the kettle on and discussing them in a relaxed way. The bimonthly quiz is going very well. It takes place every second Thursday, once in Hathern Club and once in the Dew Drop. The library team, Bookends, won last time and enabled the Club to take the overall lead. At first our American buddies disputed this and there were shouts of ‘Stop the Steal’. However, as in the US election, the result turned out to be accurate. They will be up for conquest on home soil next time. The Parish Council submitted comments to the planning department about the hedgerow. They suggested that the new residents would not need the southeast entrance, as this leads to a farm track which gets muddy at times and as it would create a gap in the hedge, when they have an entrance to the tarmac path leading from the park to Rowan Avenue. A resident also suggested that the existing gap at the top could be used instead of making a new gap further down. Whichever option prevails, we have managed to preserve a piece of ancient hedgerow. We still await the reply from the Forestry Commission concerning the funding of the new woodland. We are now looking at a lot of the planting being done by volunteers in the autumn and continuing next year if we don’t manage to complete it. We need to involve schoolchildren and various bodies such as Hathern Together and the Green Gym. Given the enormous willingness of the villagers to volunteer for so many things, I am confident we can deliver. The devastation of hedges and trees for the new roundabout is sad to see. However, the HVA are confident that the Wicked Music Fest will be on the usual site in August. Hathern Football Club are sitting in 11th place in the Everards Brewery Senior Premier League with 29 points and games in hand on every other team. Check out their next home match and go along to shout for/at them. A snip at £3 entrance. The vaccination centre in Southfields is very quiet. We vaccinated only about 30 people in my morning shift today (Feb 25th). Please consider getting your booster. If you have had two shots already, you are not an anti-vaxxer. Infections are still in the 40,000s and we are not out of the woods yet. We have a lot of freedom now, but we could enjoy that freedom so much more if we could get the last 25% triple jabbed. Stay safe.

Time To Get Walking Again! Article by John Harris

At this time of year we start to think about the mud drying up and getting out to walk in the beautiful English Countryside again, but where to find new and interesting walks? Walking in Leicestershire www. walkinginengland.co.uk/leics has hundreds of walks to download and print, free, it also has books of walks, details of all the walking groups in the county and much more. Whether you want to walk on your own or with a group all the information is there in one place.

John Harris (the custodian of the website) said ‘There is so much walking information on the web but it is difficult to find. Walking in Leicestershire (part of the Walking in England website) has brought it together in one place so whether you are walking from home, or away on holiday, you will be able to find a walk suitable for you’. With walks from half a mile to twelve miles plus long, and a note of suitability for pushchairs and wheelchairs, everyone can find a walk to enjoy. So home or away, check out the websites and get walking! www.walkinginengland.co.uk john@walkinginengland.co.uk

Prone To Allergy? A Good Night’s Sleep Can Help Article by Gary Trickett

In the UK we have some of the highest rates of allergic conditions in the world, with Allergy UK estimating over 20% of the population to be affected by one or more allergic disorders, and the number of people living with allergies in the UK, said to be rising by 5% every year. These numbers are even higher in younger people, with up to 37% of UK teenagers affected by allergy. Hayfever is of course one of the UK’s most common allergies. In essence an excessive reaction to a normally harmless substance, in this instance pollen. The immune system identifies pollen as dangerous, and produces an antibody called IgE, which triggers the production of histamine. Histamine is an inflammatory chemical that causes an array of unpleasant symptoms, including running nose and eyes, itching and burning in localised areas such as in the throat, nose and eyes, puffiness, swelling and mucus formation. So if histamine is to blame, surely an anti-histamine is the perfect antidote to allergy? Yes, but it’s worth understanding why your immune system is acting up in the first place as you may be able to dampen down your body’s allergic response. According to immunologist Dr Ross Walton, allergies are a product of humanity’s progression – an ‘evolutionary hangover’, not so much genetically, but certainly socially. They are driven by an immune response that was initially there to protect us against parasite infections. However, as society has evolved and become ‘cleaner’ and (fairly) parasite-free, we now have an immune response that lacks the appropriate education and sometimes fires itself up when it doesn’t really need to. And this is where a decent night’s sleep can help. Whilst scientists are still trying to figure out the exact relationship between sleep and the immune system, many agree that a lack of sleep can severely impair immunity and make you more vulnerable to infections like colds and flu, and now allergy. Many studies suggest that sleep helps our bodies create the immune cells we need to fight off pathogens. Others show that sleep helps to shift the balance of anti-inflammatory proteins so that the immune system can recognise and respond better to bugs and allergens. The science certainly shows that improving our sleep is an easy win when it comes to improving our immune response. So, if you are prone to allergies, making sure you sleep well can help to keep your immune system healthy and responding appropriately, which may help to reduce your susceptibility to allergy. Need help nodding off? Dormeasan® Sleep with fresh valerian and hops can help you get to sleep and also stay in the deeper stages of sleep for longer. It’s also non-addictive and fast-acting, and won't normally leave you feeling groggy in the morning. Whilst putting together this small missive for Your Local, I have a tendency to look back at the last month activities and people I may have interviewed or spoken with in aid to support what they may be doing. In February I spoke with Jayne Curnock, co-ordinator at the Shepshed Volunteer Centre. Jayne spoke to me about all that the Centre does at present, and plans for the future including the Well Being Garden. The Well Being Garden is at the rear of the centre and offers groups a very different experience. To name all the possibilities would a take long explanation, but you could go to my group page and listen to the interview and look around the garden, it’s all on video, thanks to Facebook.

Als Electronic Shepshed Experience Article by Allan Dobb

This year I have set out to get my project out there so it can serve more local people, and on the last day of February I joined up with other organisations at an event put on by the Volunteer Centre. This was an open morning were we could show what each of our projects was about and talk to people. In the missive I put out every day, I wrote about three business and their progress. It’s important to the community that businesses and organisations they support, that they are told of their progress. I continue to speak with more people and will feature them all at a later date. One constant is technology, it either works or it doesn’t, and in my case I cannot operate without it. Some of the software I use to present interviews and get videos onto Facebook is not too well at the time of writing. The company is America based so we have a time lapse, so to speak, they sleep while we are awake etc. Never the less this will be sorted and I will be able to get back on track. Have an interesting month, back in April. Al…

Get Your Lawn Ready For Summer With warmer, longer days on the horizon, the beautiful bright colours of your garden are best enjoyed alongside a lush, green lawn. As the centrepiece of your garden, GreenThumb Lawn Treatment Service will ensure your lawn reaches its full potential as a weed-free, healthy, and well-loved lawn. Our ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment is applied between April and June and features a fully coated fertiliser designed to give your lawn a timed release of nutrition over several months, feeding your grass and stimulating growth. This sophisticated treatment also includes a weed control to help eradicate those which are unwelcome on your lawn, keeping your lawn looking its best ready for summer. An added benefit of our ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment is that you’ll also receive an application of our fantastic water conserver, Oasis. Now is the perfect time

for an Oasis Treatment as it helps your soil to make the best use of any available moisture, meaning you’ll need to water up to 80% less. Our popular Oasis Treatment now features an innovative, highly concentrated seaweed extract which has proven to have an almost immediate visual effect on the colour of your lawn. At this time of year, we also recommend implementing a regular mowing regime to help your lawn be the best it can be. Dry, sunny days are the best conditions for mowing, however it’s important that your mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. It is also important, especially during the summer months, that your grass isn’t cut too short as this will weaken it, attracting unwanted weeds. When dry, we advise raising the height of your cut from 1” up to 2” and give it a good drink the day after mowing. Let’s create the lawn we both love. Entrance and Modular Extension - Before...

View from the Old Foyer...

When students were welcomed back after Christmas, we had finally moved into one building following the addition of our new, and much-needed, modular extension. Walking in through the Main Entrance doors, under the new glazed canopy, students are greeted with an impressive new foyer that leads to both the new classrooms and the rest of the school. Visitors access the new Main Reception area via a dedicated door to the right. Evidence of refurbishments appear all over the school such as in classrooms, Art & Design areas, swimming pool showers, toilets, and other staff & student areas, along with significant behind-thescenes work including new boilers, pumps, building management system, IT fibre infrastructure, new servers, interactive screens, fire doors and CCTV. New playgrounds are now being completed and security and safeguarding are being improved with the addition of new perimeter fencing.

We Need You!

For those that don’t know, Shepshed Dynamo FC play at The Dovecote Stadium, Butthole Lane, Shepshed, LE12 9BN. We play at Step 4 of the football pyramid (4 off the football league). We were promoted to this level at the end of last season and to remain in the league have had to undertake a lot of work for ground grading. Thankfully, with the help and generosity of friends, supporters and local businesses this work will be completed. Moving forwards, we’ll be working more closely with The Shepshed Dynamo Youth and Juniors. We will have them at matches on a regular basis and aim to give them a pathway to one day hopefully representing the Seniors first team. All of the above takes time, effort and money, so here’s my shout out!

If you have time on your hands to help with the upkeep of the ground or to help on a matchday then please get in touch.

The club runs a monthly ‘Dynamo Draw’ which costs £10.00. Currently, there are three prizes: 1st £100.00 2nd £60.00 3rd £40.00

The money raised helps towards the sustainability of the club and any remedial works that needs doing.

If you, or anyone you know would like information on advertising and sponsorship opportunities please let me know. We have a very good social media following, over 6000 on Twitter

FOOTBALL CLUB

We also have a modern clubhouse for hire, for any private parties or events you may have coming up. Finally, as Shepshed grows it would be great to see new faces on a matchday. We’re a very sociable club and you’ll be made welcome.

If we can increase our numbers significantly then there’ll be more prizes.
