St Botolph’s Platinum Jubilee Exhibition Article by Jane & Heather
Over the Jubilee Bank Holiday there will be an exhibition of memorabilia and memories of Queen Elizabeth ll’s Coronation year. As we look forward to the Jubilee of our own Queen, many of us do not realise that our Church may have a much older Royal connection. In our familiarity with the building, perhaps we have not noticed or have forgotten that, carved in oak above the chancel arch and the painted depiction of Jesus, there is a queen’s face. Is this our own Queen’s namesake, Elizabeth I? It looks very like her, but it is something of a mystery! We know that she paid a visit to the area and perhaps it was carved to celebrate a visit to the Church, too? But whatever the history, it is good to think that people have come here through the ages to worship and celebrate the most important events of their lives and that perhaps one of them was even a Royal!
Article by Klara Dixon
A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP TO NOTTINGHAM
Year 12 visited the Carrington Street area to collect data on the regeneration. The students worked before the trip to develop their own data collection sheets. These included land use surveys, questionnaires and bipolar surveys. Working in small groups students collected the data by speaking to the public, shop owners and recreating photos of buildings to collect regeneration evidence and whether it’s been good, or bad, for the local area. Groups worked quickly and efficiently to collect enough data to analyse when back in school where they then completed a full write up as practice before they complete their NEA work next year.
About 55 year 11 students were really excited to be going out for a field trip, even just to Nottingham, as this was their first trip since year 9 due to covid. They were given booklets that fed into their fieldwork focus of ‘sense of place’ and ‘qualitative surveys’. We went to the Robin Hood statue and castle area of the city. Many students were surprised by the beauty and character of the I come to area. Students then collected Nottingham all their data around Nottingham, the time, even completing field sketches - one used to live here, student found themselves sketching next to an artist and and I have never got some tips. Students been to this area collected three words about year 11 Student Nottingham from the public and completed bipolar surveys. Some P16 geography ambassadors came along and were a great help! Some students bought souvenirs for their first trip to Nottingham - ranging from toilet rolls to doughnuts! Students were a delight to be taken out on fieldwork again, representing the school really well, even if they did complain that their legs hurt!

Steps Conductive Education Centre - British Gypsum 100 Mile Challenge Bike Ride Article by Katy Widdowson
Steps Conductive Education Centre, based in Shepshed, supports families with children who have special educational needs. They offer a free and unique service for children with conditions that cause motor impairments or motor development delays. Steps works with young children who have Cerebral Palsy, chromosome disorders including Down Syndrome or other conditions that affect the acquisition of motor skills. The practitioners help children to maximise their potential and support the whole family in their time of need. From the moment families attend Steps they are welcomed into a warm, caring environment where every child matters. This year Steps is the nominated charity for the British Gypsum 100 Mile Challenge Bike Ride. Each year a team of up to 100 riders take on the huge task of cycling 100 miles from the British Gypsum base in Barrow on Soar to the coast at Skegness! British Gypsum has very generously agreed to match fund any amount raised up to £5,000. East Midlands-based British Gypsum is the country’s leading manufacturer and distributor of plaster and plasterboard and is the largest plant of its kind in Europe. Each year volunteers from the company organise the charity bike ride and have raised over £250,000 in the last 13 years of the event. This year’s event is even more significant as it should have taken place in 2020 and has been postponed for the last two years due to the pandemic. Steps was nominated by Phil Johnson, grandfather to Evelyn who attended Steps for 3 years. Evelyn joined Steps when she was 2 years old and would often come along with her grandparents to the sessions. Steps was a source of support and reassurance to her family and Evelyn is now thriving and is attending mainstream school. Steps relies totally on fundraising to raise the £220,000 every single year that it needs to operate. Since March 2020 Steps has seen a significant loss in income from fundraising events which makes events like this so vitally important. Steps is a life-changing charity which is so needed by the families that it works with. Pleases support this amazing cause that really does make a difference to children’s lives. To support the British Gypsum team you can sponsor them here: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/barrow2skegness2022 If you would like more information on Steps and the work that it carries out, then please go to www.stepscentre.org.uk to find out more.
Central Meditation Group Article by Chris North
Central Meditation Group is a not-for-profit organisation serving Charnwood, North West Leicestershire, and the surrounding areas. The meditation practiced is easy to learn and benefits most people; nothing weird is involved: there is no chanting and we sit on normal chairs. The group is organised by a vastly experienced independent meditation teacher. We have weekly evening meetings in Shepshed at minimal cost to members (just a small fee to cover room hire). If you are interested, phone Chris on 01509 506585.
Als Electronic Shepshed Experience Article by Allan Dobb
Although its gone March was a very busy month for podcast Al. Any interviews I do will take upwards of six hours to edit and to put it out on to Facebook as you hear and sometimes see it every week. April saw a feature that I put together on Alzheimers and Dementia, with local people involved in helping me, which started last November. I got the feeling that many carers, care for their loved ones in complete isolation, not aware there is help out there. In the feature I tried to address that situation, with information and web pages, and a professional in Stuart Kennedy from Admiral Nurses, who are based in Loughborough. There is a film covering this terrible disease, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins called the Father. This covers Dementia from the families prospective and the sufferer, with no cure at present there will come a time when both will have to part company as the care gets more intensive. If you would like to hear the feature it should be still available on my group page, if not contact me and I will get the file to you. Other features coming up are the Toy Library in Shepshed, that was out on the 23rd of April. With costs of toys going up with everything else and the shortness of the playing span, it makes good sense to hire out the toys your child may need. It works like a book library, and you return them in the agreed time. The Toys are also put into an age ranges to cover the differing play at the age your child maybe. The Toy Library is on the Iveshead School Campus and they are on Facebook, contact no. 01509601146. Children’s hand and eye co-ordination is so important to their development as is playing with toys and sharing in play, all these are covered within the Toy Library’s brief. I managed to get away for a few days in early April to the Isle of Wight, to rest my bones and to explore an island not visited for twenty odd years. Obviously time has change the island we have the old techno stuff now , so you can never be to far away from the world at large, but its still a fantastic holiday venue. This meant that my missives were put out in the evening, which isn’t my best time, the mornings are always my most productive. Coming up on the podshows in May will be a chat with Glennis Wilcox from the Shepshed Food Bank, I have to take Syd the stick, to video and have a look around. The Age concern Shop is on the list and coming up, with Vision also. I have completed my first roam around Shepshed Jitty’s and walk throughs ready to go online. This could well interest new residents to the area, I have covered the Fairway and Trueway area first. This should keep me going for the rest of this year, as there are many to cover. Enjoy your May and back next month. Al… To access the pod shows and the group page go to your Facebook search engine and type in the following; Al’s Electronic Shepshed Experience and join the fun and the madness.

Borough Councillor for Hathern
I have been indirectly told off for not representing the facts in full concerning the management proposals for the hedgerow in the Zouch Road development. William Davis claim that they are merely following standard procedure in cutting and laying the hedge and submit that the hedge is a neglected mess in need of TLC. Cutting and laying would tidy it up and then it would grow in an orderly fashion. Hathern Parish Council take a different view, which they have adopted from the advice of the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, which is that the east west hedge should NOT be cut and laid and that only part of the north south hedge should be. I think that most if not all residents would agree. The Parish would most likely look at adopting the site as they are attempting to do with Daisy Bank. That would lead to sensitive management, involving some tidying up of the hedge without cropping it to give a view. In a very positive development, the Chair has been invited to meet the relevant officers at CBC and a representative of WD to discuss the hedge. County Highways have refused to allow access from the Zouch Road and that throws a hefty spanner in the wheels. There are not many other options. Daisy Bank, how do you fancy a rat-run up Goodacre? Then would you prefer down the other side of Goodacre or down Doble? Or both? Or maybe a nice little passage for vehicles through to the tree streets? Hathern Together are putting up a full programme of events this June and beyond to celebrate Big Week and a certain little royal occasion. There will be the usual suspects like Proms in the Park, Big Quiz, Mad Frolics in the Park and ones never seen before, with the bar open all week to keep you refreshed. There will be craft fairs dotted around the village so you can do a craft fair crawl and spend loads of money to boost local crafters. Info should have hit your doorsteps by the time you read this. The Library will be fully involved in Big Week with stalls, book sales and reading events. We are doing a sponsored walk on the 25th and 26th of June to raise funds for the library. I will be totally legless after another 35 miles visiting every community library in Charnwood. If you fancy doing this or part of it if you have any sense, you can get some sponsors and take part. If you have even more sense, you could put your feet up or go to the Dew Drop and pay somebody else to do it. I have made enquiries about re-siting litter bins. The CBC officer saw no problem in doing this as it was like for like and did not result in extra costs beyond the re-siting. I have permission from WD to site a bin on their land in Daisy bank. This will be temporary, as the parish will adopt the site at some unspecified point in the future when the lawyers finally come to an agreement. CBC will continue to organise emptying by Serco. The Covid numbers are falling but there does seem to be quite a few cases in the village. Enjoy the new freedoms but stay safe. And get your booster.

Member of Parliament
Over the past few months, I have been working with the Shepshed Town Team to explore opportunities to secure funding for the town. The Town Team, in consultation with Charnwood Borough Council, have identified some potential projects around sports and leisure and are now working to see if relevant government funding can be secured to turn these ideas into reality. I’d like to thank everyone in Shepshed Town Team for their continued efforts and I will work with them in any way I can to support them. Hopefully in the coming months we can share further details, but in the meantime I’d to acknowledge the incredible work that they are doing for the town. For more information on Shepshed Town Team, please do follow them on Facebook: www.facebook.com/ShepshedTownTeam With the ongoing war in Ukraine, many residents will be concerned about rising prices and the cost of living. In May, Charnwood Borough Council is expected to begin paying the £150 Council Tax rebate for households in bands A to D. The money has come directly from central Government to help households with increased energy costs. This is a non-repayable rebate that will be paid directly to council taxpayers. The Council have also received funding for a Local Discretionary Fund to support households who are in need but are not eligible for the Council Tax rebate. The Council have a dedicated webpage on the rebate, which is regularly updated, so please visit to find out more: www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/ctenergyrebate In the recent Tax Plan that was announced back in March, there were also a number of other measures announced to help with the cost of living. • Slashing fuel duty by 5p for twelve months, delivering a £5 billion tax cut for drivers. Together with the fuel duty freeze, this will save car drivers £100, van drivers £200, and HGV drivers £1,500 this year, coming into effect immediately from 6pm this evening, across the United Kingdom. • Rising the National Insurance personal threshold from £9,500 to £12,570 from July, delivering the largest increase in a starting personal tax threshold in British history. This is equivalent to a £6 billion tax cut for nearly 30 million workers and worth over £330 a year starting in July, across the entire United Kingdom. This is the largest single personal tax cut in a decade. • Helping people keep more of what they earn by cutting the basic rate of income tax to 19 pence in 2024, delivering a tax cut worth £5 billion for over 30 million workers, pensioners and savers – only the second income tax cut in two decades and the first income tax cut for 16 years. This will be worth around £175 for a typical taxpayer. • Raising the employment allowance to £5,000, delivering a £1,000 tax cut for small businesses. The Employment Allowance cuts employers’ national insurance tax bills by increasing the employment allowance even further to £5,000 from April – that’s a new £1,000 tax cut for half a million small businesses. • Doubling the existing Household Support Fund to £1 billion, delivering an additional £500 million to the Household Support Fund. This helps the most vulnerable families with the cost of living. The fund is distributed through local authorities in England, who have discretion over exactly how the funding is used. This is expected to benefit 3 to 4 million vulnerable households. I appreciate that the increased cost of living will remain a worry for many residents. If you have any specific concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me and I will do all I can to help.

County Councillor for Shepshed
Easter has been and gone and we were very lucky with the weather. I expect the Easter bunny came to your homes if you had young children; it certainly did at mine now that I have my grand children living with me. Gardeners will be thinking of the summer bedding. I am busy dealing with residents problems. The majority of our meetings at County are face to face, but small meetings are taking place via Teams. Cabinet – Tuesday 29th March I attended this Cabinet meeting where there was a full agenda at which we discussed the capital works programme for the Environment and Transport programme. The A511 Growth Corridor Proposals – Bardon Link Road. The National Bus Strategy, the Local Bus Service Challenges and Impacts, the Leicester City Workplace Parking Levy Business Case Proposals, the Charging for Social Care and Support Policy. The response to the Hinckley National Rail Freight Interchange Consultation. The response to Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council Pre submission Local Plan. Response to North West Leicestershire District Council Local Plan Review. New Care Technology service to enhance independence A new technology service with potential to boost independence, improve quality of life, reduce support needs and protect vulnerable adults, is now available to residents. Care Technology (CT) (sometimes referred to as ‘telecare’) is monitoring and alert equipment that can help people to remain independent in their home and in the community. This equipment will provide residents, their carers, family and friends with the reassurance that help is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Care Technology covers a wide range of equipment, such as alarm systems, falls detectors and GPS location trackers. User-friendly technology will be tailored for each person’ circumstances, helping them to live safe and independent lives. The Care Technology Service is nonchargeable for all adults who meet the eligibility criteria. To find out more visit www. leicestershire.gov.uk/carte-technpology. SCAMS Over 20K People fell victim to remote access scams. More than £50 million was lost last year to scams where victims are tricked into handing over control of their computer or smart phones to criminals. What are remote access scams? They will often begin with a browser popup saying your computer is infected with a virus, or maybe a call from someone claiming to be from your bank saying that they need to connect to your computer in order to cancel a fraudulent transaction on your account. Regardless of the narrative the fraudsters’ use, their goal is to steal your money or access financial information by tricking you into allowing them to remotely connect to your computer. Remember a bank or service provider will never contact you out of the blue requesting remote access to your device. Protect your money by contacting your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via actionfraud.police.uk Partners band together to support Ukrainian refugees Families and children fleeing Ukraine are starting to arrive in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland as councils, NHS, Police, East Midlands Airport and other organisations team up to provide support and a safe place to live. Based on the data provided by the Government, the area is currently planning to welcome around 500 refugees who, over the next few months, are due to live with people who have offered space in their houses through the Government’s Home for Ukraine scheme. A new welcome point has opened at East Midlands Airport – one of over 30 nationwide – and local councils have started carrying out housing, welfare and safeguarding checks, to see what support is needed. Around 20 partners are working together under the Local Resilience

A Work In Progress Solo Exhibition At Sock Gallery
Article by Liz Black Dowding
I'm a local artist and am having my first solo exhibition at the Sock Gallery, Loughborough from Thursday 21st April to Saturday 4th June. I won the chance to show my work after my painting Snow Hare was voted People's Choice in the Sock Gallery Summer Open Exhibition in 2018. Initially my own exhibition was scheduled for May 2020, but due to Covid and lockdown, it is only now becoming a reality! I have been continuing to paint and have a collection of over 70 pieces of work to be viewed. I think that the two-year wait has been useful in terms of quality and quantity! I have always been interested in art and trained as a graphic designer, but had moved away from graphics to concentrate on illustrating and watercolour painting. My work has been used for books, textiles, ceramics and most recently, for the greetings industry. My work has featured on cards, gift wrap, gift boxes and most paper products worldwide. I have also trained in adult teaching and am running workshops in Loughborough. In 2018 I had a renewed love of painting on a larger scale and started using acrylics on canvas and board. I began by creating paintings of my most loved places in Cumbria and the Lake District. Winning the People's Choice at the Sock Gallery Open exhibition gave me more confidence to keep working in this medium, and the chance of a solo exhibition, which was both terrifying and exciting. All my work is very personal, and I strive to create the beauty I see in landscapes and nature. More recently my work has been looking at the play of light on landscapes, the drama and contrast that it creates. There is also the theme of light breaking through in the dark, which is how I feel about life in general. The exhibition will show a wide variety of work showing local scenes, Cumbria, and the Lake District. As well as original work there will be a range of printed gifts and greetings cards on sale.

Shepshed Open Gardens Is Back For 2022!
Get Your Lawn Ready For Summer With warmer, longer days on the horizon, the beautiful bright colours of your garden are best enjoyed alongside a lush, green lawn. As the centrepiece of your garden, GreenThumb Lawn Treatment Service will ensure your lawn reaches its full potential as a weed-free, healthy, and well-loved lawn.
Article by Jayne Curnock
Shepshed Open Gardens Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd July 2022 1-6pm Have you have spent a lot of time during the last two years working in your garden? Why not share it and help to raise money for Shepshed Volunteer Centre (SVC) and Shepshed Special Community Bus (SSCB), by opening it up over the first weekend in July. We are not looking for show gardens, the entry criteria is that you want to raise funds for SVC and SSCB and share your hard work and creativity with your neighbours and the wider community. Large or small your garden can inspire others to take up gardening and enjoy the benefits that come with it. It is free for households to enter; members of the public purchase a programme which gives them a map of the gardens that will be open. We run a raffle over the weekend with lots of prizes, tickets
available from the open gardens. Households can sell refreshments and plants if they wish. To enter, call into Shepshed volunteer centre (9a Charnwood Road, Shepshed) to collect a form, or telephone 01509 508040 and complete the form over the phone, or email jayne@jscharnwood.org. uk for the form to be sent to you.
Shepshed Volunteer Centre Needs Drivers! Article by Jayne Curnock
At Shepshed Volunteer Centre prior to the Covid pandemic we had 20 drivers, we now only have 5, this has reduced the number of people we can support. Are you friendly, reassuring and a good driver, do you enjoy the company of older and vulnerable people? Do you have some spare time, are you retired, working shifts, or have children at school? Would you like to help transport older and vulnerable people who live near you to medical and social appointments? At Shepshed Volunteer Centre we would love to hear from you. You use your own car for transport journeys and we reimburse you at 45p per mile, expenses do not affect any pensions/benefits you receive.
Our ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment is applied between April and June and features a fully coated fertiliser designed to give your lawn a timed release of nutrition over several months, feeding your grass and stimulating growth. This sophisticated treatment also includes a weed control to help eradicate those which are unwelcome on your lawn, keeping your lawn looking its best ready for summer. An added benefit of our ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment is that you’ll also receive an application of our fantastic water conserver, Oasis. Now is the perfect time
for an Oasis Treatment as it helps your soil to make the best use of any available moisture, meaning you’ll need to water up to 80% less. Our popular Oasis Treatment now features an innovative, highly concentrated seaweed extract which has proven to have an almost immediate visual effect on the colour of your lawn. At this time of year, we also recommend implementing a regular mowing regime to help your lawn be the best it can be. Dry, sunny days are the best conditions for mowing, however it’s important that your mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. It is also important, especially during the summer months, that your grass isn’t cut too short as this will weaken it, attracting unwanted weeds. When dry, we advise raising the height of your cut from 1” up to 2” and give it a good drink the day after mowing. Let’s create the lawn we both love. New Artwork Commissioned At Glenmore Park And Parkour Equipment By Local Artist Article by Brenda Snape
Artwork which has been commissioned by Shepshed Town Council. The artworks were carried out by local artist Mark Shock (Eatzshootsandleaves. These can be found in Glenmore Park and also on the parkour equipment on Oakley Road Playing Fields. Patience, confidence and safe driving skills are essential, and a sense of humour always helps. Volunteer driving is rewarding and provides an essential service to the residents of Shepshed who rely on our transport service. The role requires an enhanced DBS disclosure which we carry out and is free for the volunteer. As a volunteer driver you decide when you are available to drive, it can be one day a week, or it can be more, you choose. You also decide whether you do local appointments or the longer distance hospital appointments. If you are interested in volunteer driving, or you know someone who is, please get in touch with Jayne Curnock on 01509 508040, or email jayne@jscharnwood.org. uk for more information.
