Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling
Our frontline staff follow Government guidelines for visiting you in your home and they are in the vaccination program with second course completed. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you. Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT).

A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

Passion Youth Project Article by Vicky Gould
Café opening/fundraising event 11th September This was a huge success raising a whopping £775! Thanks to Kathryn and Sam Taylor for their time and help! Jane Hunt MP and the Charnwood Mayor attending, as well as Myriam Roberts and Jane Lennie from the local parish council. I am unaware of any other members of the Shepshed Parish Council attending the event. I did however have an apology from Robin Popley as he was already busy on that day. It was a real shame to not have the support of the local council at the event. It was very busy and showed that the young people involved are getting stuck into running a community café! It is now open every Saturday and Sunday 12-4pm. Many of the young people commit to every weekend unless they have family commitments. Volunteers We are always on the look out for new people to join Passion. We have lost Mike Richards as a regular caretaker, but he is on hand when things go wrong. We have however enlisted Simon Waldron to help with the week-to-week stuff like putting up shelves or moving heavy stuff downstairs. We have also gained two new volunteers for the drop-in service. Surt Burt and Gary Taylor. The young people have started to talk to them, which is a sign that they are gaining their trust. Passion Youth Hub Drop in Thurs and Fri 7-9 for 11 -18 years old. This still proves popular and well attended. We expect this to be busier soon when the weather starts to turn. Chat and chomp - Thurs 4-6pm. This is currently used as a prep session for the café. They prepare the cakes and anything else that can be done before hand. They are also experimenting with some of the new things like Blondies (white choc brownies!). Also learning about Gluten free baking and cross contamination. Car Park Coffee - Mon and Fri 7.45-8.30. Is very popular especially with the near students at Iveshead. The reusable cups are going down well, so well we will have to order some more soon! To give you an idea, we get through a 6-pint bottle of milk! Student support café This is currently being done on a 1-2-1 basis, but I hope to get it back soon. I have however managed to get 1 young person back to college and get another a part-time job, that now looks like they will be going further than pot washing! 1 young person onto the gov apprentice program as a nursery nurse. Another young person volunteering for another charity in Loughborough. I have also had to start offering 1-2-1 meetings with young people. This is something that we have not had to offer before but due to the increase in mental health issues it is a request of parents and young people. I take the young person for a drink and cake out of Shepshed, so we are not seen or overheard by their peers. Parental permission is always sought before, and they are told where we are going for added security. New venture – Passion Parcels -Thurs 9.30-14.45 In conjunction with Stephenson Studio School. This is a project that the young people own. They have been tasked with setting up an eBay shop to sell items that are donated to Passion for this purpose. It is led by a group of 7 students, that
6 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news
have chosen to use this as their work placement. Even though they have only been going a week, they have already come up with a name and logo. They will be holding a cake stall to fundraise to have the money to buy any items they require to start the business. It is also attended by one of the teaching assistants from the school. All the funds raised through the eBay shop will go back into Passion. New venture – Shepshed Community Café Sat and Sun 12-4pm. The opening event went really well and was well attended. Every week the young people are tweaking the project to make it better or easier. It currently has 12 young people involved in the project. Some attend every session, some once a month. All are in the process of completing their Food hygiene course and everything is over seen by me. Funding We got the lottery grant!!! This has taken 6 months of hard work to obtain. It is for 3 years. The nuts and bolts are that the rent is fully paid for that time plus 23 hours of my salary is also secure. This is a huge relief to me and the young people. We are now able to take a step back and look at what we do and how we do it without worrying where nest months money is coming from. That said I have not stopped in the search for funding as this money does not cover everything.

Als Electronic Shepshed Experience Article by Allan Dobb
We are into the dark days of Autumn and the lack of daylight subdues what we can do during the day. Throughout the Lockdown I have been able to interview the people who are making a difference in our community over the phone. This is due to the digital equipment on the market. Technology in our present age, and the media platforms to put them on make producing podcasts and interesting video’s possible for anyone who wants to try their luck. I speak to many people who will have nothing to do with Facebook or any of the media platforms, by their choice. I well understand their feelings and over the past few weeks there have been some terrible issues, regarding on-line abuse. Much of this is against women who are in the media, this is not acceptable. I try to make the content on my group page and in the podcasts informative and entertaining. If you have a business or a charity to promote, then the media platforms, if done correctly, can reach many people and bring success. In October I was out and about, visiting The Flower Lady and Nibbles and Cheddar.
Shepshed History Society Article by Marjorie Schulz
Tuesday October 12th saw the re-opening of the ever popular Shepshed History Society which was very well attended. The meeting was given by the well known local archeologist Mr Peter Liddle and he gave a very interesting and enjoyable talk on the ancient history of the Bradgate area that came into being long before the famous Lady Jane Grey ever came to fame. Recent excavations have unearthed countless artifacts and ruins which have given a fascinating insight to life on Bradgate as long ago as 13,000 years ago when primitive man occupied the countryside. Flint tools by the hundreds have been discovered along with the footprints of long forgotten roads and other relics depicting life of ancient man. The biggest excavation and the most intriguing one was the revelation that there was indeed a former house made out of stone, sited where the more well known ruins of the house of brick still stands today. Giving rise to the conundrum was this stone house indeed the house that Lady Jane actually lived in and was not the brick house after all? it could well possibly be the truth. The ruins we see today have been modified and generally changed over the centuries, so what we have today is not an accurate account of what the original brick house looked like when first erected and investigations are still going on. Next month's meeting on Tues Nov 9th will be given by the famous novelist Margaret Dickinson. New comers are always welcome. Please note, due to covid restrictions and to avoid overlap with other Glenmore Centre's users, it would be much appreciated if members would not arrive before 7.20, please. Many thanks.
Abi has just opened her shop on Ashby Road, and we looked at all things Flowers. So If your needs are bouquets or just bunches, then pop up and see Abi, on Ashby Road, she is The Flower Lady. I did another in depth chat with Marie from Nibbles and Cheddar, who stands on the Friday Shepshed market. Marie shared with us her passion for markets and obviously cheese. Its an absolute pleasure to engage with all the people who make the community a better place, and long may it continue. Back next month Al..

The Santas Are Back In Town! Article by Linda Thompson
The Santas will be back in Loughborough Town Centre on Sunday 5th December, as they prepare for the start of the seventeenth annual Santa Fun Run & Walk. Loughborough Rotary Club organised a very successful ‘Alternative’ Santa Fun Run in 2020, for obvious reasons, but are delighted to be able to host this popular actual event again this year. Over forty charities benefit each year, as participants can support one of the headline charities [being Dementia UK, LOROS, Prostaid, Rainbows and the Wellbeing Centre in 2021], or one of their own choice. Several schools have found this to be a great way to generate funds for their own needs, or favourite causes. The ‘Santa Paws’ competition will also be included again this year, giving dog owners the opportunity to dress their pooches in a festive fashion, and parade them alongside the mascots and the pantomime dame on the stage. Sign up via www.santa-fun-run.co.uk; collect your santa suit from the Loughborough Building Society, and join in the fun at 11am on Sunday 5th December.

We will be out in the field again the weekend of the 30th/31st setting up the Wicked Hathern Firework event for Nov 6th. I flagged it up last time and maybe you will see this before the event. Please go along and make this a resounding success. The Hathern Village Association need to sell a lot of tickets this time. It is on the Dishley Grange field from 5 – 11. Here’s the blurb.
The 1st week was a general social evening where a review of the new programme took place and subscriptions were sorted out. Also, the “Pimp my Camera” challenge was announced and explained. On Tuesday September 28th the Peter Harvey Trophy competition took place, where members enter 4 new photographs that had not been entered into any previous competition. This competition was judged by Gary Langley and from a high standard of entries 2 members, Mick Jelly and Nigel Bampton, emerged victorious with an impressive 74 points out of 80.to. Tuesday 5th October saw club member Lyn Hopkinson gave an entertaining and thought-provoking talk on Photojournalism/War Photography. Lyn spoke about the work of her brother and showed some of his images. The final round of the internal competitions took place on Tuesday 12th October and was judged by David Gibbins who chose. the following to receive awards: Architecture (projected images) 1st John Clarke 2nd Chris Coxon 3rd Mick Jelly Highly Commended Lyn Hopkinson & Chris Bravington Open Category (prints) 1st Alan Harris 2nd Mick Jelly 3rd Mick Jelly Highly Commended Gary Rennocks & Nigel Brampton
Old Architecture - John Clarke
Poem by Liz Nash We wait, two metres apart, masked. Eyes smiling recognition. Not in the main street. A communal space, next to a library and loos. Locked down, we queue for essentials. Free range eggs, posh cheese, fresh fish. "He's run out "a pork chipolatas." At the bakers' stall; luxury brownies and scones,
A fun-packed night featuring TWO displays – a silent one for the littlies and a main display – PLUS a real bonfire, live entertainment, licenced bar, food vendors and fairground attractions (weather dependant). Come and join us at Charnwood’s BIGGEST bonfire event. That entertainment will be provided by the great covers band the Zufflers who will be knocking out two stonking sets of indie rock anthems before and after the main display.
Buzzard - Alan Harris
Stonechat - Nigel Bampton
I have been presenting our case for the retention of as much of Boyer’s Hedge as possible. I gave the main arguments last time. The officer in charge has replied to me saying that my various points in favour of retention had been noted. I thought this article would reach you too late to enable you to comment as the deadline was Nov 3rd. But I have managed to get an extension of a week until the 10th. Dave Neville is posting a lot of info on the Hathern Wildlife FB page, so have a look and please add your comments to let CBC know what you think about this. You can comment directly on the Planning Explorer, email to development. control@charnwood.co.uk or send a letter. The reference is P/21/1797/2. My main argument is that the village is resigned to not being able to stop the development because the housing stock is perpetually below the required numbers and would have to accept the removal if it were a case of getting in the way of the actual housing or infrastructure. This proposal, however, does not affect any of that. It is solely to provide ‘connectivity’ for the new residents. I submitted that the existing gap is adequate for that purpose and could be widened by a yard or so and a bridge provided. They want to cut three entrances to the play area in the western hedge as well, which will disrupt any continuity for wildlife. One entrance should suffice. The new residents can access the village via the path at the top of Doble and be at the library, church or the Three Crowns in minutes. So if you didn’t get round to it by the 3rd, you can now still add your comments until the 10th.

Hathern Library is functioning normally now with various activities restored in full. If you have any time to spare and fancy helping out, Gill Rockett would be delighted to hear from you. We are managing to keep open all the 15 hours due to Gill’s heroic efforts to keep all the shifts staffed. But we often need cover. Any extra hands would be very welcome to do the odd cover shift. Gill trains you and there will always be a more experienced person on with you. Hathern Club is now fully up and running after the refurb. There are a lot of music events and there is a bingo night. Don’t miss the Zufflers coming soon. I play 5 a side football with the guitarist and will be having a pint or three with him when they play. But I will make sure he doesn’t end up playing too many bum notes! Hathern Youth Club is also back up and running. They are open every Friday evening for 7 – 18-year-olds in the village hall. Why not go down and join in the activities? The Covid booster rollout is in full swing now at Southfields. The shifts are now relentless but it is great seeing the older generation flocking to get the extra protection. The booster gives you 95% protection. Please make an appointment as soon as six months have passed since your second jab. We are doing second jabs as well and some stragglers are turning up for their first. We still have 5 million unvaccinated and they make up the huge majority of hospitalisations and deaths. Don’t end up like the people we see on ventilators saying they didn’t find the time. Let’s get this sorted so everyone can have a Christmas this year.

Nights are drawing in and the days are getting colder. I have been taking out my summer bedding and replacing it with winter bulbs and bedding. It does seem a shame when the summer bedding is still looking good. I hope you are all keeping well, I have had the flu which is going the rounds and felt horrid. Collapsed Bank – near to Persimmon Homes I have to report that Persimmon Homes did repair the bank, but I am not happy with the repair and have got back to County and Charnwood indicating that I have concerns with this repair and if we have heavy rain the bank will be washed away again. I shall continue to monitor the situation. Artwork created by prisoners at HMP Gartree on show at Harborough Museum An exciting exhibition showcasing artwork created by prisoners at HMP Gartree went on show in the Community Gallery at the Harborough Museum on 9th October and will be displayed until February 2022. Entry to the exhibition is free. The artworks were made in a series of workshops run at the prison by Leicestershire County Council’s Participation team and the Libraries service. Prisoners were given the opportunity to go along to reading sessions where they read together, wrote and shared reviews on the books and then created works of art inspired by what they had read. The exhibition has been made possible by funding that Leicestershire Libraries received in 2019 from Libraries Connected. The funding allowed the Library service to buy the BBC ‘One Hundred Novels that Shaped the World’ – these were used in the project to inspire the prisoners to create their art. I attended the exhibition with the Governor of HMP Gartree, Babafemi Dada and was very impressed with the artworks on display. I was pleased to be able to attend following my previous visit and speaking to some of the prisoners whose artwork was going to be on display. Unique heritage project uses sound to support people with dementia A project which uses archive and new sound recordings for reminiscence, called on communities across Leicestershire to capture and share everyday sounds which mean a lot to them. The project has now created a unique sound resource to help support people living with dementia. Leicestershire County Council’s Participation Team was successful in a bid to take part in the ambitious national Unlocking Our Sound Heritage (UOSH) project. The team called on groups and individuals across the county to create a two-minute recording of a sound that means something to them and share it with the project. Sounds recorded include children playing, dough being kneaded, tea making, busy kitchen, a Cornish beach and the Scottish Highlands. Evaluation has shown that this project has especially made a significant difference to people and their carers living with dementia. The resources created from the project are now available on the Culture Leicestershire website, along with themed sound resources and helpful toolkits for use in reminiscence work at, www.cultureleicestershire.co.uk/ projects/unlocking-sounds/ Rare glimpse into Leicestershire’s medieval life on display for the first time in ten years A 470-year-old extremely rare medieval tunic, discovered in Coleorton in North West Leicestershire, has been put on display to the public for the first time in over ten years. The tunic features in the new Cultures of Cloth in the Medieval East Midlands exhibition at the University of Nottingham Museum which shows how our medieval ancestors in Leicestershire, Nottingham and Derbyshire designed and made the cloth and clothing for which the region became famous. It dates to the 16th century and is one of only a handful of surviving items

of early clothing that belonged to a working person. The tunic is being displayed next to a modern replica, showing what the ancient Leicestershire local would have worn. Leicestershire has a rich history which we are so proud of. Our museums in Leicestershire are home to so many fascinating artifacts, it is great that we can lend out some of our collection to help more people in our region learn about our history and ancient ways of life. Alongside the tunic, the exhibition brings a wide variety of objects related to cloth production, trade and consumption – including tools for making clothes, brooches, buckles and clothing. The exhibition is now open and closes on the 20th February 2022. Shepshed Refuse and Recycling Tip I would like to assure residents that I am keeping the pressure on County to open up the tip as soon as possible if not sooner. It has been quite a while now without the use of tip and a very busy time for gardeners. I have it on good authority that the tip will re-open. T: 01509 262723 E: jane.hunt.mp@parliament.uk The success of the vaccine rollout has ensured that we have been able to enjoy many of the things that we could not have done in the previous year. Whether it’s attending major sporting events or going on holidays, I’m grateful for everyone involved in the vaccine rollout, which has ensured that we are returning to normality. However, the winter months always pose additional challenges, so it’s vital we continue to take up our vaccines when we become eligible. At the time of writing, over six million people in the UK have come forward to receive their Covid-19 booster vaccines. And if you’ve yet to take up your first vaccine, please do come forward. It’s never been easier to get your vaccine, either by booking online or attending a drop-in clinic. As well as getting your Covid-19 vaccine, it’s also important to take up your flu vaccine. The NHS is rolling out their winter flu vaccination programme, so do book your jab when you are eligible. The best way to protect friends and family as well as the NHS, is to take up your vaccines, when offered. By doing so, we can continue to enjoy the activities we have enjoyed these past few months. One such activity we’ve enjoyed is visiting the local pub. Pubs have experienced a tough time last year and it’s vital that we continue to support them in the months and years ahead. Pubs such as the Bull & Bush in Shepshed played a vital part during lockdown, hosting online pub quizzes and delivering meals to people in our communities. As the economy has reopened, pubs have adapted to new rules, transformed their outside areas and ensured that we can enjoy ourselves in a Covid secure manner. I recently attended a session in Parliament hosted by the British Beer & Pub Association to learn more about their ‘Long Live the Local’ campaign to help pubs and breweries in Loughborough recover and thrive. I was fascinated to learn that a pub adds £100,000 to its local economy, creates jobs and acts as a social hub. Brewing and pubs in the Loughborough constituency supports 1595 jobs and contributes £35m to the local economy. This underlines the importance of pubs, both in terms of their benefits to the local economy, but also the social benefits they bring to our communities. Readers may be aware that I have been calling for support for the hospitality sector throughout the lockdown, of which pubs provide a vital part. As with pubs, I am also encouraging residents to shop local in the run up to Christmas. We celebrate Small Business Saturday on 4th December, which is a chance to support our small independent retailers. We have some wonderful shops on our doorstep, all of which have experienced a challenging Christmas last year. This year, these shops are open again, so let’s show them our support and make it a bumper Christmas for our independent retailers. As ever, if I can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
