The Oaks Seniors recommenced meeting in August in the Oaks Storer Hall, Oaks Road, Oaks in Charnwood adjacent to St. James' the Greater Church. It was lovely to see so many members return and we had a very happy afternoon. I have taken over as the new Leader of the Oaks Seniors from Sheila Bass who has stepped down after twenty-six years. Well-done Sheila it's now time to put your feet up and have a well-earned rest! Our group meets every other Tuesday starting at 2 pm. At every meeting in the Oaks Storer Hall, we have several games of Bingo, a Raffle, refreshments with tea, coffee and biscuits and fun. If you are unable to drive, I can arrange transport via Roberts's coaches to bring you to the Oaks and take you back again with various collection points around Shepshed. As well as having meetings we have Bring & Buys and a Cake Stall to raise funds. We also have Speaker's on a variety of topics and we go out on day trips too. Our next day trip is to Buxton in Derbyshire on Tuesday September 28th. The cost is £13 for members and £15 if you would like to bring a friend. We also go out for a Christmas meal at the end of the year. For further information on joining the Oaks Seniors group, please contact Wendy on 01509 503135 with answerphone or 0750 3643261.

Als Electronic Shepshed Experience Article by Allan Dobb

When starting any project that will encourage the public to become involved, it can be precarious. On other occasions you can be gifted with things that were never planned. I set out this Shepshed project to bring forward talent in our locale, and that has been a success. What I didn’t plan on was the support and friendship from not just those interviewed, but from listeners to the various Podshows. I know for a fact not all members listen every week, but all this is par for the course. Local Radio has only average listeners for 8 hours a week. Podcasting however has a very different audience, top podcasters have fame on their side, and do very interesting and sometimes controversial podding. I set my pod up to promote Shepshed people and surrounding areas, the projects they have set up, some for charity and some for business. All this was done during the worst pandemic we can remember. With all this in mind I will be revisiting some of the people who have been interviewed, ‘One Year On’. Seeing how they are progressing and moving forward with their projects. First one up was Gill Moore and her Litter pickers. They go around the local Shepshed are picking up where the Councils cannot attend due to Health and safety. Gill spoke about this on our chin-wag as to why, and its is mainly common sense safety issues, plus labour costs. Sunday August 22nd saw the Shepshed Market Traders put on some fabulous entertainment. This took the form of live music, and was non profit making event. This was a thank you from all the market traders to all who have supported them on the Friday Market. I managed to get around the Fest with Syd the selfie stick live on Facebook, to talk with the Stall holders and some of the people milling around. They were all pleased to see an event like a music festival in Shepshed happening after the lockdown.

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling

Our frontline staff follow Government guidelines for visiting you in your home and they are in the vaccination program with second course completed. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you. Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

I have more people and more Facebook lives in Shepshed coming over the next weeks.

Local Family Raise Over £1000 For Charity That Has Supported Their Daughter Article by Katy Widdowson

Ayad and Myriam Al-Rawi's daughter Lina has attended Steps since she was 3 years old. Lina has benefitted from weekly sessions from Steps and after seeing the impact that Steps has had on their family, Ayad and Myriam decided to launch a crowdfunder to raise vital funds for Steps. Using the world's first social impact crowdfunding platform HeroCrowd they were able to raise £1100 for Steps.

Staycation SOS

Article by Gary Trickett Let’s face it, we don’t have to travel half way around the world to catch too much sun, fall victim to biting insects or succumb to a dodgy tum. If you’re looking forward to a staycation in the UK you’ll still want to put in some pre-holiday prep.

Ayad created a beautiful video about Lina and Steps as part of their crowdfunding initiative in it he commented "Steps is very dear to our hearts, Lina our daughter was diagnosed from birth with a genetic disorder and Steps were excellent with us and really helped us out. They have done a fantastic job over the years, free lessons for children on a weekly basis and lots of advice and guidance for parents". Indila Simandi Lead Conductor at Steps said "A huge thank you to everyone involved in Lina's fundraising campaign for Steps, it costs £220,000 each year to be able to continue our service and help many many families just like Lina's lovely family. Thank you so much again, your kind donation will help many more families to benefit from the service that Steps has to offer". At Steps we don't receive any statutory funding and so we must raise all of the £220,000 we need each year through grants, fundraising and donations, the pandemic has had a massive impact on our income and this is why we are so grateful to families like Lina's for helping Steps by raising vital funds for us so we can continue to offer our free service to more families who so desperately need our help. If you would like to get involved with Steps through fundraising, donating, volunteering or if you'd just like to find out more, please get in touch with our Centre and Volunteer Manager Janet Russell who would love to speak to you! manager@stepscentre.org.uk Tel: 01509 506878

WELL-EARNED RESULTS

Anticipating a stressful journey? Breathe. By taking fewer but deeper breaths you will optimise your oxygen intake, helping you to relax and remain calm. Brilliant for when your family makes helpful suggestions. For a little herbal assistance try Passiflora. Passiflora tablets and drops can be used when a period of stress is anticipated or encountered. A handy spray is also available – perfect for when that car journey becomes unbearable. Support your tummy on your travels with a good probiotic supplement before and when you travel. Molkosan Fruit Drink can help establish the right environment within which important infection-fighting bacteria can flourish, revitalising your digestive system. For nausea associated with travel, try ginger. Motion sickness is caused by a conflict between what your eyes and other senses tell your brain. The brain becomes confused, which can leave you with a horrible feeling of nausea, dizziness and an upset stomach. Fresh ginger tea before and during travel may help with feelings of nausea and sickness. Keep biting insects at bay. If mosquitoes and biting insects are a problem, a good insect repellent on exposed skin should help. You may not be travelling to any far flung corners of the world this year, but mosquitoes and midges can still be a nuisance in slightly cooler climes, especially if you’re looking forward to a camping or walking holiday. Neem seed extract is a popular alternative to DEET-containing sprays. Try A.Vogel’s Herbal Insect Repellent Spray. The scent of neem masks your individual scent, making you less easy to find. Finally, stay safe in the sun. Have fun in the sun but do so safely. Always wear a good SPF, avoid sitting in the sun when it’s at its strongest – typically this is between 12pm and 2pm. And if you do get caught short, Aloe vera applied topically can help to soothe dry, reddened or sundamaged skin. For further information visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester.

Mr James with some relieved A-Level students

I am incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication that Year 13 have shown throughout a difficult two years. It was wonderful to celebrate their well-earned achievements this morning - a far cry from the stress and panic in comparison to last year and we wish them all the best in their future endeavours. They've been a credit to the school throughout their time in Post-16 and I will miss them enormously.

Nathan James, Director of Post-16

Governors are immensely proud of the fantastic achievements for all our students, and we would like to commend each and every one of them for their resilience, work ethic and determination to succeed. Their support to and from staff and each other has been exceptional, and this year more than ever, they have embodied our culture of mutual respect, support, tolerance and compassion. Our staff have encountered many tasks and situations never faced before in education and have had to change their entire way of working at a moment’s notice. Their strength of character and determination to help set successful pathways for our students cannot be underestimated. Our staff and students have embraced our blended learning approach this year, ensuring that they continue to achieve at the highest possible standards, whether studying online or in person. This has allowed us to ensure that our students are fully prepared and inspired for the next part of their journey. Jo Unwin, Chair of Governors

The Hall Croft Buzz Article by Den Corrall

Stand in the Coop car park anytime on a Friday morning between 7.30pm and midday and you will hear the buzz. Close your eyes for a moment and you could be in a French country town or a village in Falstaff’s Merrie England on market day. But you’re not, this is Shepshed m’duck, and what you are hearing is the buzz made up of gossip, joshing, banter, a lot of laughter….. in fact, proper craic. It’s the buzz of Shepshed coming back to life, not just after Covid, but after years of boarded up empty shops and “nobody about”. The buzz is the Hall Croft market, and it’s my new weekly addiction. It’s brilliant how it started in lockdown and has grown. It is everything a lively market should be: great vendors selling high quality food and goods, often locally sourced. On a typical Friday morning you could start, where I do, at the converted horse trailer where Marie tempts you with a whole range of tasty cheeses made by the growing band of enthusiastic artisan producers, then it’s on to the tang of the sea and the quality fishmonger, with a stop at the butchers, the egg man, and the glory that is Belvoir Bakery with its tempting array of cakes and fine loaves that keep our household in bread for a week. You can also pick up some stunning dried flowers, keep your dog happy with goodies from the canine treats stall, refresh your garden with plants and cuttings and get some gardening advice from the wonderful and colourful mobile garden centre, and do your bit for the planet by refilling your plastic washing up liquid bottles, and buying some tasty herbs and spices at the same time from the nice ladies in the white van. And let’s not forget the fruit and veg, always fresh, always in season and always sold with a smile and a bit of banter. For many years this one stall was Shepshed market, come rain or shine, every Friday throughout the year. The Buzz extends beyond the market stalls. It is in the cafés and coffee shops that come alive with the market, in the craft beer Tap, in the prospect of increased footfall in the library and nourished by long standing friends at Livio’s bringing a little touch of sunny Italy to Hall Croft. It also extends beyond Hall Croft. My Friday morning shop would not be complete without a visit to the Urban Farm Shop, where the Dog House used to be. What a glorious Aladdin’s Cave of tasty goodies it is. How do they cram such a variety of delicious locally produced products into such a small space? Everything from pies and samosas to die for, to local honey, pickles, preserves and duck eggs…..and, my granddaughters favourite Friday morning moment…..doing a pick and mix from the shelves of old fashioned sweet jars. Vergil, the owner, tells me that his target for the shop is to sell goods from fifty different local producers, at present he is up to twenty-two. His shop is one of a number of exciting new enterprises in Shepshed, like Ang’s Fish Bar and the Turkish Barbers, who are complementing our long -established businesses: the butchers, hairdressers, take- aways, restaurants, convenient stores and pubs that have kept the flag flying for “keeping it local” for many years. Encouragingly, the Buzz is buzzing beyond Shepshed. We have friends from Hathern and Sutton Bonington who are now Friday morning regulars and we’ve even heard a whisper that Ashby de la Zouch folks are travelling down the A512 with their “Bags for Life” to see what all the fuss is about In the end though, a market buzz is not just about buying and selling, important as that is, it’s also about people enjoying each other’s company and taking a pride in the local. Every Friday morning, I bump into old friends and acquaintances and have a natter, inevitably I also end up talking to people I’ve never spoken to before, and I see others doing exactly the same. I come home ladened with mouth-watering goodies and a warm glow……. you could say I was “buzzing”! So, thank you to all the very enterprising and hard -working market traders and shop keepers of Shepshed, new and long established. These are difficult and challenging times and we know it isn’t easy. You are breathing life back into our community. May the “Buzz” be with you. And to any readers who haven’t yet experienced the Hall Croft Buzz, get on down there next Friday, you’ll love it, even if you find you have spent a little more than you intended……you won’t be able to resist that artisan sourdough, buttered and topped off with a slice of Ruland Red……go on treat yourself it’s been a long hard 18 months, you deserve it! See you there.

Leicester Animal Aid Association Article by Nicole Blair

Kitten Season What is kitten season? Kitten season is a term used to describe the period in which cats predominantly breed and give birth. Although cats can breed nearly all year long, Kitten Season tends to run from April to late autumn. During the summer months, LAA tends to see a higher number of pregnant cats and kittens coming through the doors, all needing new homes. There’s no doubt kittens are incredibly cute bundles of joy. Things will never be the same again once a furry little ball of energy enters your life. Watching them grow up with you and your family is an absolute delight. What people sometimes don’t realise, however, is that for all those big eyes and playful paws, kittens can be a lot of work. They don’t come with an offswitch! Just like babies, kittens are hugely demanding of your time. Is a kitten right for me? It’s worth thinking carefully whether an adult cat might suit your needs better. Not only are they more self-reliant, but they’re also more likely to respect your home rather than climb up the curtains. If you’re on the fence about whether a kitten or an adult cat suits your lifestyle better, let us introduce you to Kinder. Kinder is a three year old tortoiseshell domestic shorthair (coat colouring named for its similarity to tortoiseshell material) who came into our care through her previous owner. She came in heavily pregnant and has been with us a while now after having four kittens. We know she has had multiple litters in the past and now is her time to have all the love and attention she deserves. Though she was a fantastic mum, Kinder has now been spayed and her life starts now. Kinder is a sweet-natured girl who enjoys fuss but it may be on her own terms at times. If you are lucky you will get a little face bump! She is still quite young-at-heart and enjoys playing with her toys so she will need a home where the adopters are willing to give her the physical and mental stimulation she needs. Kinder can live with respectful children aged 12 years and over. She prefers the company of people over other animals, so she would need to be rehomed as the only pet in the house. She will eventually need indoor and outdoor access, as she loves to explore. We have many cats just like Kinder still looking for their forever home. If you are interested in meeting her, our current kittens or any other cat available for adoption, please visit our website to fill out the Interested Parties form - www.leicesteranimalaid.org.uk If now is not the right time for adopting a cat or kitten but you would still like to support our mission, you could always visit the Amazon Wishlist on our website to donate much-needed kitten food. Or you could even sign up to become a LAA Member! Membership to Leicester Animal Aid is one of the very best ways you can demonstrate your commitment to helping dogs and cats in need. Please visit the Membership page on our website for more information.

Summertime Favourites To Help You Slim

• • • • • • •

We could be in for a heat wave and that can only mean one thing… it’s time to heat up the barbecue.

Method Cook the rice according to the packet instructions, adding the mixed beans and chickpeas for the final 2 minutes. Drain and transfer to a large bowl. Add the spring onions, tomatoes, chilli and coriander and stir well. Drizzle the lemon juice, crumble over the feta and season to taste. Cool, cover and chill until you’re ready to eat. Serve with lemon wedges.

Claire-Lou Wilson, who runs the Wednesday evening Slimming World group in Shepshed, says: “On hot summer days like these, staying on track with your weight loss might be even more challenging than usual. However, losing weight doesn’t mean you have to miss out and barbecues are brilliant if you’re trying to be healthy. Claire-Lou continues: “Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan allows slimmers to fill up on plenty of healthy foods – that also happen to be barbecue favourites – such as potatoes, rice and lean meats. So you can join in the fun without jeopardising your weight loss.” To prove her point, Claire-Lou has shared some summertime scorchers to help you stay focused whatever the occasion. From refreshing salads to gorgeous grilled chicken – these delicious Slimming World recipes are guaranteed to satisfy your appetite all while protecting your weight loss. Recipe: Rice and mixed bean salad Serves 4 Ready in 25 minutes Ingredients: • 250g dried basmati and wild rice • 400g can mixed beans, drained and rinsed

400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 8 spring onions, finely sliced 2 tomatoes, roughly chopped 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped Large handful of fresh coriander, finely chopped Juice of 2 large lemons, plus wedges to serve 100g reduced-fat feta

Recipe: Zesty Butterflied Chicken Serves 4 Ready in 40 minutes, plus chilling Ingredients • Pared peel of 1 small unwaxed lemon, plus grated zest of ½ unwaxed lemon to serve • 1 tsp sea salt • ½ tsp dried chilli flakes, plus extra to serve • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 tbsp chopped fresh rosemary, plus extra to serve • 4 skinless and boneless chicken breasts • Low-calorie cooking spray • Salad or veg, to serve • For the potato salad • 500g Jersey Royals (or use new or baby potatoes) • 3 tbsp warm vegetable stock • 2 level tbsp extra-light mayonnaise • 4 tbsp fat-free natural Greek yogurt • 2 tbsp roughly chopped fresh parsley • 2 tbsp roughly chopped fresh mint • 6 spring onions, sliced

12 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news

Method Preheat the oven to 140°C/Fan 120°C/Gas 1. Put the lemon peel strips on a baking tray and bake for 15-20 minutes until pale-golden and dry. Using a pestle and mortar or a rolling pin, grind the baked lemon peel and salt together. Stir in the chilli, garlic, rosemary and a little freshly ground black pepper and mix well. Now ‘butterfly’ the chicken breasts. Hold 1 chicken breast on a chopping board and slice through the middle horizontally until almost cut in half – take care not to go all the way! Open out flat like a butterfly. Repeat with the other breasts and rub the lemon mixture all over the cut sides. Lay flat on 2 plates, cover and chill for at least 1 hour. Meanwhile, make the potato salad. Cook the potatoes in a saucepan of boiling water over a high heat for 15-20 minutes or until tender. Drain and halve, put them in a bowl and pour over the stock. Toss well and leave to cool – the potatoes will soak up some of the stock while they’re still warm. Mix the mayonnaise and yogurt in a bowl, stir in the herbs and spring onions and season to taste. Add to the potatoes and fold everything together. Light the barbecue for direct medium heat. Spray the chicken with low-calorie cooking spray and barbecue over direct medium heat for 8-10 minutes or until tender and cooked through, turning once. Or cook on a griddle pan over a medium-high heat. Scatter over the extra lemon zest, chilli and rosemary and serve hot with the creamy potato salad and lots of salad or veg. Your local groups are held on Wednesday 9.30am with Christina at Shepshed Bowls Club and Wednesday 5.30pm & 7.00pm with Claire-Lou at Christchurch Methodist Church. Member of Parliament

I hope you have all had a chance for some much-needed time off over the summer. The House hasn’t been sitting over the summer months, which has allowed me to spend more time in the constituency. I love going on constituency visits; I have been to some incredibly interesting places and met some truly fascinating people. I am always amazed by the things that go on here, and this was true when I visited Shepshed-based company, Urgo Medical recently. I was shown around their site on Sullington Road, where they research and produce wound dressings which not only protect the wound, but actively assist in recovery. During the visit I sat down with General Manager, Antoine Fontan, to discuss how the company had managed to adapt to the challenges posed by the global pandemic, as well how it was addressing future challenges and opportunities within the current NHS context. I saw some of the incredible products they produce on the site, such as the high-quality compression hosiery, which is used by people who suffer from chronic wounds like leg ulcers and lymphedema, deteriorating their quality of life. I also heard about the innovative work they do on artificial skin which is used to treat severe burns. This particular product has received praise from none other than the French President, Emmanuel Macron! Further up the road, I dropped in to see Laura and Nez, licensees at the Bull & Bush. I visited the pub last year to see the measures they had put in place to reopen following the lockdown, so this was a return visit. I was blown away with the progress they have made; vastly improving their garden area and putting on events for the local community. I was also delighted to hear that Laura has recently become the chair of the Shepshed Town Team, and I am looking forward to working with her on Shepshed-related matters. Over in Hathern, I was pleased to see proposals for a 15-acre community woodland on Charnwood Borough Council-owned land off Golden Square. The proposed Hathern Community Woodland project, which the Council is working on with Hathern Parish Council, would see around 14,000 trees planted on the site. The plan is to plant native broadleaf and naturalised trees species on two arable fields adjacent to Golden Square and Lammas Drive. Initially the young trees will require fencing to protect them, but pedestrian gates will allow for woodland walks in the future. This is a very welcome innovative and will have the potential to capture 1,323 tonnes carbon dioxide by 2030, helping us to meet our commitment to reach net-zero. More information on this scheme can be found on the Charnwood Borough Council website. As ever, if I can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.

Borough Councillor for Hathern

All hats should be off to the indomitable Hathern Village Association after they pulled off yet another great event. The open air 80s night went down extremely well if the bar sales are anything to go by!! The bar catered for more than double the actual number and still nearly sold out. Gill Rockett and I saw how good a time people had had after months of lockdown when we sorted the recyclable waste on Sunday. I have arranged for Serco to collect that again. We are trying to keep the festivals as green as possible. We Tried Kylie played a storming set headlining after several other groups supplied one 80s hit after another. It was a shame that more people didn’t turn out. Admittedly, it was raining up to the start of the show but stopped very soon after and it was a pleasant evening with absolutely no Glastonbury mud. There were excellent food vendors including one with vegan and vegetarian options, where I bought a delicious halloumi burger. It is so important that we support the HVA’s efforts to provide entertainment. You are very lucky to have such dedicated people struggling through wind, rain and sun to set up events and clear away after. The full Wicked Fest should be back next year and the fireworks will be back in November. It is now fully confirmed that the woodland project is going ahead. Hathern will be getting 14,000 trees, which will provide an excellent extra buffer when the Garendon SUE eventually encroaches up the other side of the hill, remove the threat of further housing there forever and will keep the separation of the village intact. There will be opportunities to get your boots on Hathern-style and get stuck in with some voluntary contributions. There appear to be some mixed messages concerning the hedgerow on the perimeter of the proposed new development below Daisy Bank. When Emma and I attended a meeting with William Davis, they told us that they wanted to remove the hedge to make a closer connection of the new development to Daisy Bank. Then I heard that WD don’t want the expense of removing the hedge but that the planners were urging them to do so. I am trying to get to the bottom of this and have consulted the conservation department at the council. I think that removing the hedge is unnecessary, as there is already a gap in it through which the new residents could join the path on Doble Crescent directly and then access the village easily. The council has a duty to protect, enhance and increase biodiversity and ripping out a hedgerow which has been there for 250 years is not a great move in that regard. The plans have been submitted but not published yet as I write. When they are, please post your comments on the council portal. Hathern Wildlife has a large membership and they will be objecting. You will no doubt see the irony of my following a paragraph about 14,000 trees with their immense ecological value with one about uprooting an ancient hedgerow for spurious human interests. I think there is more than enough evidence now that human interests must not always prevail if we are to preserve any acceptable level of diversity. Our wonderful little library is reaching out to the world. Two of the stalwart volunteers, Carmen and Marcos, have organised a shipment of some of our book donations to a library in Brazil. Children’s books in the shipment will be sent out to smaller libraries there in deprived areas. We hope to send more shipments in the future. On Sunday September 12 there will be an awards event to present medals to children who have completed the summer reading challenge, followed by a party with buns or cakes (or whatever the tireless volunteers come up with). It is very good to see people coming back in larger numbers to the library and the figures for book issues are very pleasing. It is especially gratifying to see so many parents bringing children in and those children excited at coming to the library and running to the shelves to choose new books. We have a meeting this evening – (August 25th) to discuss what events we could organise. If you have any ideas about what you would like to see, please contact us and we can do our best to set it up if it is feasible. We have a public computer in the library which members can book and we have two Kindles for public use. The pond has been excavated on the allotment site and a skip was delivered to take away the piles of debris. This is yet another Hathern volunteer project to set up a wildlife patch. They meet twice a week to set this up. If you have any time, please join in. Keep safe. The pandemic isn’t over yet. We have 30,000+ cases a day and it’s still summer.

Christine Radford County Councillor for Shepshed T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com

August is always a quieter month for formal meetings. I have therefore taken the advantage of this and visited many places which fall within my portfolio at County. Health and Wellbeing Board This was the first face to face meeting of the Board since lock down. I represent the County for adults on this board, it was a very full agenda and we discussed the following:Overview of the Integrated Care System and its purpose, Principles and Priorities. Outputs and Recommendations arising from the Health and Wellbeing Board Development Session. Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland Health Inequalities Framework Wider Determinants of Health Action Plan Air Quality and Health Action Plan Leicestershire Children and Families Partnership Plan; Progress Update. Domestic Abuse Act 2021 Transforming Care for those with Learning Disabilities and/or Autism Framework for Integrated Personalised Care Health and Wellbeing Board Annual Report 2020/21 Healthwatch Annual Report 2020/21 Housing Services Update The date of the next Wellbeing Board will be held on Thursday 23rd September. A new exhibition charting the 800-year history of Loughborough market The Market 800 exhibition has been created by Leicestershire County Council’s Communities and Well being Team, working with Loughborough Library Local Studies Volunteer Group, Charnwood Borough Council and market traders. The exhibition can be seen in Charnwood Museum 10am to 4pm from Tuesday to Saturday and 10am-1pm on Sunday. Admission is free. Visits - BioStatus, Shepshed On 29th July I took the Chairman of the County Council to visit BioStatus in Shepshed and to meet up with Stefan Ogrodzinski (Director/CEO). Over the years I have visited this business and recently learnt that they had been involved in working with the Government on the Business-led innovation in response to global disruption due to Covid-19. The company used the grant which they were awarded to speed up new probe development – with a focus on probes they can recognise the impact of cellular pathogens – helping the development of new drug screening strategies. BioStatus has spun out three additional pharmaceutical companies over the years. Collectively, the group therefore has four focus areas:• BioStatus is concerned with novel probe development. • BioSuspensions is focused on the commercialisation of a novel structured suspension technology – allowing insoluble ingredients to be presented as pourable liquids. • OnocTherics is concerned with the development of novel hypoxia activated prodrugs • BioTheric is their newest venture, formed to commercialise an ischaemia targeting drug for the treatment of ventricular arrhythmias. Forest Road, Loughborough Forest Road is owned by Leicestershire County Council, the Landlord is Nottingham Community Housing Association and the Support is provided by Creative Support. In my Lead Role at County I visited this property, with Cllr Ted Parton, which County had recently purchased from Loughborough University and had it converted into a 9 bed roomed house with 2 kitchens and 3 bathrooms, to be occupied by 7 individuals. There is access to parking bays to the side and a garden area to the rear of the property. The accommodation is suitable for those with mental health support needs.

Cabinet approves licence conditions for private sector housing licensing schemes Cabinet members approved the conditions for the Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) and Selective Licensing schemes at a meeting on Thursday 1st July 2021. The two schemes, that aim to improve the quality of privately rented accommodation and reduce its impact on the local community, will be introduced from January 2022. HMO Licensing is a borough-wide scheme for any HMO which does not already hold a mandatory licence and is occupied by three or four unrelated persons. The conditions for each scheme relate to the management of the property and will help improve standards and issues around poorly-managed properties. These include conditions relating to gas and electrical safety, smoke alarms, storage and disposal of household waste, energy performance, security, property management and dealing with anti-social behaviour. The conditions for each licence will last for five years. More information about the schemes and conditions can also be found on the Council’s website at www.charnwood.gov.uk/psic Make sure you are on the electoral register Thousands of forms were delivered to each household in July, people were asked to check whether the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct. Having your details on the electoral register will: • Allow you to be able to vote • Improve your credit rating • Make it easier to access council services • Help to avoid a fine Any resident who have questions can visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/ electoraldservices or contact the helpline on 01509 634546 800 years of Loughborough Markets and Fair marked with heritage plaque A Charnwood Heritage Plaque was unveiled to make the 800th anniversary of the Royal Charters for Loughborough Markets and Fair. In 1221, a young King Henry lll granted a Royal Charter to Hugh le Despenser, the Lord of the manor, to hold a weekly Thursday market and an annual fair in Loughborough. Eight centuries later, the market and fair are run by the borough council which is working with partners to mark the landmark year.
