Ed, together with his Mum, Sharon and Scout Leader Steve Baker attended a Scout Gold Award Presentation evening at St Martin’s House in Leicester where Ed, together with a number of scouts from across Leicestershire were presented with their Scout Gold Award Certificates by the Scout County Commissioner, Byron Chatburn.

Groby Community College students have been working together in year 10 Life skills classes to collect Christmas presents to send to children in poor countries around the world. Continued from page 1 To gain his award, Ed has undertaken various activities which included sleeping out in cardboard boxes to raise money for the Homeless Charity, Shelter - which also involved presenting a project explaining why people are homeless, what can be done and how we can help - as part of his Global Challenge Badge; Creative Challenges, such as making candles and a wooden tea tray; Fitness Challenges that culminated in Ed and his fellow scouts undertaking the Oaks Scout Challenge, a hike of 22 miles with full kit on their backs so they could camp overnight! As part of the presentation evening each scout was asked to write something about the activities that they have undertaken so that the audience could appreciate the diversity of each individual’s accomplishments for their award. Ed wrote: - ‘My favourite memories are of the two long walks we did. The Oaks Challenge was an amazing weekend with four seasons of weather in 2 days. One minute we were warm and happy, the next the snow was coming down. It was also my younger brothers first scout trip and I helped him with his kit and kept him going, I was pleased to finish but very proud of my brother too as he was the youngest scout to make it. The Cader Idris camp was also superb, Skip planned it well so we could go up the mountain, then under it too, with time out to play football on the beach as the sun went down.
THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY
Our last official meeting for 2013 was November 11th , in Cropston Evangelical Chapel, and was an extremely happy one. Our guest Speakers were the Thurcaston Handbell Ringers, who have been ringing as a group for just four years, resulting in a very competent and pleasant sound. Mr. Peter Hunt, the Leader of “the Band” informed us that it took four years for the ChurchTower Bell Ringers at All Saints Church, to save to provide funds to buy the Handbells (valued at £300 each!) and the eventual purchase was made when Mr. Hunt and his wife went down to London to the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. There are apparently, only two major Bell Foundries in the Country and the other being Taylors of Loughborough. The Bell Ringers are currently saving to acquire more bells needing an F sharp and AB flat, which would extend their repertoire and Ring in G and F Major. Currently there are six ringing at any one time each with two bells; one in each Gloved hand. The gloves are required to protect the Leather Straps from perspiration from the hands causing discolouration and discomfort. We were assured you do not have to be able to read music as the Notation is in Numbers; so all you need is a sense of rhythm. On acquisition of further bells more ringers will be needed. As encouragement Mr. Hunt allowed us “to have a go” and amidst hearty laughter from the membership, some of us acquired a little more knowledge than previously possessed!!
Thank you Skip for every opportunity you have given me, and all your encouragement to help me achieve my award.’
During the course of the last four years, the group have played at venues such as outside Tescos, Beaumont Leys, the Cedars Home on Station Road and Hunters Green in Thurcaston and for the Victoria Christmas Fayre at Stonehurst Farm resulting in a total collection for LOROS in the region of £2,000.
Steve Baker, his Leader, commented, ‘Ed’s Gold Award is the first that has been achieved by a Bradgate Scout Troop member. He is also the first scout that I have had the pleasure of guiding to this top honour. I hope that his achievement will be the first of many by our scouts.’
During the course of the Demonstration, Mr. Hunt interspersed with several enjoyable jokes which were thoroughly appreciated by the Membership, which together with the following refreshments of Tea with Mince pies and tarts, set the scene for the ensuing Christmas Celebrations! In further acknowledgement, our member Mrs. Margaret Hooper, who celebrates her Birthday on the 25th December, very kindly brought along a large tin of mixed Chocolates. Fancy being born on Christmas Day!! For your future information, The Monday Club meets at the Cropston Evangelical Chapel, on Station Road, Cropston, at 2.15pm on the second Monday of each month. Car parking is available by request. Everyone will be most welcome to come and join us. For any enquires please ring me on 0116 2363467. Ann Farndon Father Christmas's sledge broke down on Christmas Eve. He flagged down a passing motorist and asked, 'Can you help me fix my sledge?' 'Sorry,' the motorist replied. 'I'm not a mechanic - I'm a chiropodist.' 'Well, can you give me a toe?'

Charity Football Match and disco Raise Over £600 for Charity In January this year my dad, Stephan Murray, suffered a serious brain illness and was put on life support. At first we were told that it was highly unlikely he would survive especially as he already has chronic renal failure and reliant on dialysis five times a week. Thankfully due to the expertise and care given to him at Nottingham Queens Medical Centre ICU he has since made a full recovery. In June, my friends and family helped me organise a charity football tournament and evening disco. We managed to raise £600 for two charities, Nottingham QMC ICU and kidney research. Many thanks go to all the lads for making it possible and giving up their day. Also thanking everyone that provided fantastic raffle prizes and to Neil and Lynne at Anstey sports bar. A great day and night was had by all.
Anstey Youth Café Summer Camp at John’s Lee Wood This summer 20 members of the Anstey Youth Café went on an overnight camping trip to John’s Lee Wood. While there they tried their hands at archery and rock climbing. Fatalities and major traumas were few, the campsite was still largely recognisable by the time we left and many trees remained standing. The trip was quite hard work, in part because of the unexpected absence of electric main sockets and en suite facilities in the middle of the woods, but despite these privations and the lack of sleep the trip was a resounding success and seems likely to become an annual event.
Film Presentations From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council
November's British comedy, “Hyde Park on Hudson”, was gentle yet memorable. King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth represented our monarchy with grace and humour. President Roosevelt's 6th cousin featured greatly as his patient companion. They had a special relationship in which she could go, when he had to work away, to his lodge in Hyde Park, enjoy the peace and think about him. Bill Murray, as the president, was brilliant. The recent best-ever version of “Great Expectations” will be shown on Friday December 13th and lasts 128 minutes. This fresh version of the Charles Dickens classic has distinguished actors: Ralph Fiennes; Robbie Coltrane; David Walliams. It promises to be an entertaining film before Christmas. In 2014, our films will be as excellent as those this year. Our New Year Presentations will be on Friday 10th January and Friday 14th February. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £4-50 and concessions are £4. The price includes refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets can be purchased via the parish office - 0116 236 7626 or at the door.
We’d like to thank the staff at John’s Lee Wood for their help and understanding, and in particular we’re very grateful to the Anstey Town Charity whose grant funded this memorable outing.
I'll bet you can't tell me where my mother comes from!

The End of Our First Term as an 11-16 Don't miss closing date for first-time school places
A big thank you to all our families and year 9 students who have chosen to stop on at the school into year 10. Last year nearly 200 students, 95% of the year did this. This year the pattern is repeated. Thanks for the vote of confidence.
After nearly a full term, the year 7 are settling in, the year 8 finding their feet, the year 9 making their options and our new year 10 stepping up to GCSE. Year 10 students have completed their first Controlled Assessments which are a part of the GCSE examination. Overall, their teachers report that they are doing very well. A big thank you to Davidsons, the builders for advancing ÂŁ320,000 cheque, which has enabled us to build our second phase of classrooms making it possible to fully convert to 1116 next September. The Friends of the Martin High School Association has just been formed. The Association will support the school, raise money, apply for grants and run key events. Anyone who has attended the school in the past can be a Friend. If you are interested in joining then contact the school. The big school events for this autumn term have included the Bowline Walk on Friday 27th September where we have raised over ÂŁ5077.10. Jeans for Genes day where we have raised ÂŁ663.52
Parents of children approaching school age are being urged to apply for a place before the closing date. Leicestershire County Council is reminding parents that if their child is four before 1st September 2014, they need to apply for infant or primary places by 15th January. Parents of children moving from infant to junior school also need to send in their choices by the same date. Starting school is not automatic and all parents need to apply. The transfer process is the same for a local authority school or a recently-converted academy. Late applicants will have the lowest priority and may not be offered a place at any of their preferred schools, or even their catchment area school. Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet member for the children and young people’s service, said: “It is very important that all parents apply on time to give their children the best possible chance of being offered a place at their preferred school. "If parents are late and there are a lot of requests, even if they live next door to the school, they are unlikely to get a place for their child. "Applying online is easy, cost-effective and secure and by reducing stationery and postage costs, it also saves the council money." Online applicants will receive an email acknowledging receipt and be able to view the decision on 16th April, 2014. Parents can also apply by post if they wish.
Forthcoming events include:• School Disco on 6th December
To find out more, go to: www.leics.gov.uk/admissions or e-mail admissions@leics.gov.uk or call 0116 305 6684.
The end of term celebrations which include:• The Christmas fair on the last Friday, 20th December to which the community is invited.
The fair is a big event with our students creating their mini businesses and stalls in order to raise money for their chosen charity. Stalls will include bric-a-brac, white elephant, grand auction, cakes etc. and lots of surprises. Do come along and enjoy it between 9.30 to 11.00 am. Outstanding Success Year 9 Boy’s Football Our Year 9 boys with 1 female student on the team, have reached the last 64 in the English National Cup after a 5-2 win against Stanground Academy in Peterborough. Round 6 is due to be played in late November against Boston Grammar School and is a home fixture at the Martin High School.

Anstey Village is Once Again Under Attack from Housing Developers. Despite land off Groby Road being developed with over 200 houses, they are now determined to build another estate at the opposite end of the village. The Greenfield site at the end of Cropston Road, just before the Thurcaston turn has been earmarked for a development of 65 houses. The questions have to be, does Anstey need this volume of new housing and can our village services and infrastructure cope with the volumes of people and cars these new estates generate? There can be no doubt that from a traffic point of view the answer is a resounding NO! The Nook is overwhelmed with queuing traffic at all times of the day, not just in rush hour and the problems often impact right back to the A46 island. Other issues this estate will impact are, of course, our schools, doctors and local parking. Not to mention environmental issues such as flooding and pollution and the erosion of the natural beauty of the countryside surrounding our village. Outline Planning has been submitted with Charnwood Borough Council (Planning Number P/13/2340/2). We must now act as a village if we want to ensure our voices are heard and our village is protected from over development and a reduction in the quality of our local services and lives. For further information or to offer support and help please contact SaveAnstey@gwkw.co.uk or see our Facebook page at SAVE ANSTEY – Cropston Road Campaign. We will keep you informed of our progress and that of the developers over the coming weeks and months.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. This will be the last showing of these lights as we only took a 3 year contract out, so next year should, if we decide to carry on with Anstey’s Christmas illuminations, you will see something new. Talking of Lights or as many of you are now experiencing “Lack of” from midnight to 5.30am every night. Another great night out, this time at Groby Club, where almost £400 was raised for this very worthy cause. All artists gave their services Free. I did a couple of lively songs and bought some raffle tickets. If you would like to purchase a CD or 3 they cost £5 each of which £2 goes straight to the charity. I feature on the first and second Albums. Rock a Boogie Woogie and Patient Man. They would make a “nice” Christmas present. Any of the H4H series of CD’s can be purchased by phoning Alan Jones on 0116 2311940. Maybe next year it’ll be Anstey’s turn to “do” there bit for our injured troops? NB. The next Martins/Buskateers night out is on Friday 6th December. 8pm. At Anstey Nomads FC admission is “Free” and there is food available. Come along and listen to some old favourites!! New Play for Kids. Don’t forget children there is new play equipment at Millfield Close play area. It cost us a lot of money and it is for you to enjoy, so please use it properly. Official opening will be made by Charnwood Mayor Cllr. Sandie Forrest on Monday December 2nd at 3.40pm. There will be some “Freebies” to give out so make sure you don’t miss out. (I’ll be there!) The Way forward? Charnwood’s Core Strategy was passed to the next stage by Charnwood Borough councillors at a special meeting on October 28th. I voted in favour of the Plan going to be inspected! We have to have a solid plan to work to, which hopefully will be in force by October 2014. It will give CBC much more say in what developers can and can’t do throughout the borough. At a well-run special meeting 45 of the 52 councillors voted to submit Charnwood Borough Council’s proposed Local Plan Core Strategy to the Secretary of State, so an examination in public can take place. The vote was cast at a Special Full Council meeting which was webcast live across the Borough on Monday (October 28, 2013) for the first time ever in Charnwood. In a named vote a total of 28 councillors voted in favour of submitting the draft plan, 17 voted against and two councillors abstained, another 5 were unable to take part. The draft strategy outlines how the Borough could grow over the next 15 years in terms of housing, employment opportunities, schools, parks and other facilities. Councillor Eric Vardy, the Council’s Cabinet member for Planning and Regeneration, said: “This was a major milestone for the draft plan. It means the Council can now submit the proposed strategy to the Secretary of State for an Examination in Public to be held in front of an independent inspector early next year. “It is now up to the Inspector to decide whether the Council’s plan can go forward with or without amendments.” If the plan is approved by the Inspector, councillors will then have to decide whether or not to officially adopt the draft plan later in 2014. BRADGATE SEWING CIRCLE -
Open Morning
Each year members of the sewing group choose a charity for which funds raised are collected over the twelve months. To help swell this fund the group decided once more to open their doors to those who would like to see what we do each week. So it was that this year our chosen charity being Cancer Research UK benefitted by the sale of a generous selection of handicraft items for sale, a number of pieces from the sales table, generous donations for tea coffee and biscuits. The raffle offered a first prize of a Patchwork Quilt made by members of the Sewing Circle, along with a Meal for Two kindly donated by Mandy and Jim at Rothleys well known Time and Plaice Restaurant, and included other prizes kindly donated by members of the group. The event was held Tuesday 15th October 2013 at the Rothley Centre Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley. All the members were gratified to see so many people admiring their handicrafts and watching them whilst they worked on ‘work in progress’ pieces . There were items on display from Patchwork Quilts, cushions, miniature knitted items, miniature pieces, cross stitch, embroideries, tapestries and even hand made lace. Many of the members were on hand to demonstrate and explain about their pieces while others dedicated time selling from table tops, helping with the raffle and working in the kitchen providing refreshments. Representatives from Leicester’ local branch of Cancer Research UK were on hand with information about the charity. Members and Committee of Bradgate Sewing Circle are very grateful to those who took time out to call and see us at Rothley Centre and for all donations towards this deserving fund. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you all again sometime. Maureen Bulmer.

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club The November meeting of the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club was a talk by Felicity Austin called ‘An Old Fashioned Christmas’. This was a departure from the usual gardening topics; a relaxed and gentle evening’s entertainment. Felicity talked about many of our Christmas traditions and looked at the origins of some of them, like the Christmas tree which was introduced from a German tradition by Queen Victoria and copied by the middle classes before becoming widespread. She also talked about blown glass baubles and tinsel, which was made from tin. Felicity had a table full of objects Felicity with objects from ‘An Old Fashioned Christmas’ from ‘an old fashioned Christmas’, many that would have been made by families, like decorated walnuts, paper chains, Chinese lanterns, and comic annuals. The traditional Christmas pudding had 13 ingredients, was stirred with wood, often had charms or money stirred in, and one was able to have three wishes – though only one would be granted!

Houses were decorated with greenery, but not before Christmas Eve and not after 12th night. Mincemeat was spiced meat. In some parts of the Country mince pies would be bashed before they were eaten, to ‘let the devil out’. The first Christmas card was in 1843, but the idea caught on so well that by the 1870’s there were complaints that they were clogging up the Christmas post. Felicity told many antidotes, read poems and passages, and even sang to us. In addition she got us playing Christmas games like guessing what was in stockings from feeling them. If the success of a visiting speaker can be gauged from the amount of laughter from the audience, then this was a very successful evening!
Programme of Events for 2014 We are pleased to present the Programme of Events for 2014 for the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club. Are you interested in gardening? Would you like to know more about all the fascinating and wonderful things that grow and live in your garden? Would you like to visit gardens of interest in the local area and see how others do it? If these things appeal to you then come and join a group of enthusiastic amateur gardeners. Whether you are experienced or just a beginner we have a wonderful programme of events for 2014. (see above) Visitors and new members are made most welcome. Meetings are informal, informative and good social events. What’s more, attending meetings is excellent value!! The membership fee is still £12 for the year or £3.00 per meeting. And, if you would like to come as a visitor (to give it a try) and then you decide to join, your visitor fee will be refunded!! So, if you are interested in gardening - come and give the Club a try.

Davidsons To The Rescue Do you know what
Leicestershire homebuilder Davidsons is helping The Martin High School in Anstey to expand and improve its facilities as it becomes an 11-16 Secondary school, providing the opportunity for pupils to take their GCSEs.
The school is converting from being an 11-14 High into an 11-16 Secondary. Nearly all the students have opted to stay on in their new school. Numbers have grown from 636 in July 2013 to an anticipated 940 in September 2014. The extra students need first class accommodation. The community have complete confidence in the conversion; the main problem has been accommodating the growth. The Martin High School has obtained government funding for some of the new building but faced the conundrum of raising the rest. This is where local homebuilders Davidsons came to the rescue. Davidsons have recently launched a new homes development on Groby Road in Anstey on land bought from the Martin family, after whom the school is named. As part of their contribution to the local infrastructure Davidsons are providing £320,664 to the school, which was due to be paid in 2 years time, but Headteacher Martin Furniss approached the homebuilder to ask if it was possible to have the money earlier. Martin Furness said, “We have fought for expansion, but didn’t know where we would get the money from to build further classrooms. I wrote to James Wilson at Davidsons to ask if they could help. To our delight James said he would make the money available now. Davidsons are a modern company with a strong community orientation. They want to ensure that the families who live in Davidsons built homes have an opportunity to attend excellent schools. Their generosity demonstrates how local business and schools can work together. This lifeline enables the Martin High School to build enough classrooms for all its students.”
your children are drinking?
That is the message from Leicestershire County Council’s Trading Standards Service in the wake of a series of test purchase operations. More than one in three retailers sold alcohol to teenagers aged either 14,15 or 16 during test purchase operations that were carried out between July and October (27 attempts by teenagers resulted in 11 sales carried). Pam Posnett, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Trading Standards, added: “As part of Alcohol Awareness Week we would also ask parents and carers to be vigilant – do you know what your children are drinking?
“Whilst we will do what we can to prevent underage sales, we would ask parents to ensure their children are aware of the effects of alcohol and the legality around buying it.” As a result of the sales, six penalty notices and five warning letters were issued. Two businesses also had additional alcohol licence conditions added to their licences, requiring them to improve their procedures to help avoid selling alcohol to those aged under 18. Dave Bull, Head of Leicestershire County Council’s Trading Standards Service, said: “It is always disappointing when a business sells alcohol to a child and we will continue to advise businesses about the law, which quite frankly is fairly simple - do not sell alcohol to under 18s. If in doubt ask for photo identification to check their age.” Detective Superintendent Andy Lee of Leicestershire Police said: “We work in partnership with licensing departments and trading standards teams in an attempt to minimise risk to young people in communities. “We also ask the public that, if approached outside a shop by young people asking for alcohol to be bought for them, do not do so but report it through to 101, Crimestoppers or by contacting your local trading standards officers via Citizens Advice 08454 04 05 06.”
Managing Director of Davidsons, James Wilson, attended a recent morning assembly at the school to present a cheque, and also met with members of the year 9 Student Council. Mr Wilson said “Wherever we build homes we contribute to the local infrastructure and at Anstey we will be providing £2 million over the life of the development to help with a number of community projects. Martin contacted me and said we have a great school here and we want to make it better, but we are short of the funds we need to build new classrooms, and could we have the money early. I’m really pleased to be here today to hand over the cheque and meet some of the pupils”. The Martin High School offers great opportunities for its students. It is known for the quality of the education that it provides. Its students are looking forward to staying on up to the point where they take their GCSEs, and to their first results in 2015.

Crimestoppers takes a stand against domestic violence in Leicestershire Members of the Crimestoppers Leicestershire and Rutland volunteer committee were at Loughborough Market on Saturday 23 November 2013 to raise awareness about the different types of domestic abuse. The event highlighted a common misconception that domestic violence only affects women with men seen to be the offenders. Despite one in four women and one in six men being victims of domestic abuse at some point in their lives, the number of incidents reported to the police are very small. Not only do the victims not want to speak out, other people are sometimes reluctant to get involved, even if they suspect there is a problem. Social media will be used to raise awareness of Crimestoppers and encourage members of the public to give information anonymously on the 0800 555 111 number, or via the anonymous online form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org Crimestoppers Vice chair for the East Midlands committee, Sue Witts said: “We want to encourage people to give information on all crime and through Crimestoppers. This is done completely anonymously without having to give a statement or go to court. "Everyone should be aware that domestic abuse affects all sectors of society and is no respecter of age, sexuality or ethnicity. By raising awareness we hope to help the victims of this crime by addressing this important issue. If you suspect a family member or a friend is living with domestic violence call 0800 555 111 or give information on line at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

Osteoarthritis of the knee
Osteoarthritis of the knee is the result of wear and tear and general aging. Some people are more prone to early osteoarthritis. The joints are covered with articular cartilage which allows the joint to glide smoothly; this becomes worn with osteoarthritis, causing the bone underneath to become exposed, and involved in the actual joint function. Leading to pain and swelling. In response, the joint produces extra bone around the edge of the joint – called osteophytes – increasing the size of the joint. How does exercise help Osteoarthritis? It is a common misconception that exercise will make arthritis worse, and aggravate the joint, causing more injury. However, appropriate exercise actually has many benefits for people with arthritis: • Provides strength and support to a joint, making it more stable • Eases stiffness and pain • Prevents muscles from losing length • Maintains the range of movement within joints • Improves general fitness and bone density. • Helps you lose weight, reducing strain on the hips and knees • General exercise releases endorphins - making you feel good! Exercises for arthritis of the knee include; gentle stretches for the calves, hamstrings and hips and specific power exercises for the quadriceps, hamstrings and gluteal muscles. General exercise improves your cardio-vascular fitness and joint mobility; non-weightbearing activities such as swimming and cycling are highly beneficial as they impose minimal impact to the knee joint. Exercise should be achievable and regular, aim to do 20 minutes each day - this can be split up into separate sessions throughout the day. To improve your general fitness you should be slightly out of breath during exercise.
â—? Try to make exercise a part of your daily routine. Joining a group, or getting fit with friends, can make exercise more fun! You should wear comfortable, wide fitting shoes with cushioned soles to provide shock absorbency.
â—? Build up your pace gradually, whilst increasing how much you do - you may need to step the pace down again if you have break from your daily routine. Most injuries occur after a break or increasing the pace too quickly.

FILMREVIEW The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - 12A The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is the incendiary sequel to the first movie and takes things to an even darker place. Having won the 74th Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) go on a victors’ tour, something that inadvertently inspires the citizens to resistance and hopes of a revolution. The powers that be can see only one way out of this situation: to kill not only Katniss and Peeta but to destroy their ‘race’, anyone who has ever won the Hunger Games. But they’re not going to go easily. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ramps all the action up from the genius first installment.
Anchorman 2 - TBC
Released 20th December Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues sees the mythical newsman, Ron Burgundy, back where he belongs: in a newsroom. Having taken on feminism single-handedly in the 1970s, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) is now back to take everything that the 1980s can thrown at him (but not at his hair!) With the dream team moving from San Diego to New York City, but with none of them moving with the times, the scene is set for a return to glory at a newly created 24-hour news channel. What could possibly go wrong? Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues sees a line-up of great comedians at their very best.
Additional festive park and ride services Extra park and ride services will run throughout December to make it easier for Christmas shoppers. The additional buses will run to Leicester city centre on Sundays throughout the month and on Boxing Day between 10am and 5.30pm. The services are operated by the city and county councils and run from the park and ride sites at Birstall, Enderby and Meynell’s Gorse. Peter Osborne, County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “There are some great festive shopping opportunities in Leicester. “However, as Christmas approaches and traffic to the city increases, finding a parking space can get trickier. “We hope these extra services will make it easier for people who would like to experience a quick, stress free journey into town.” Group tickets cost only £3.50 for up to five people travelling together (after 9.30am Monday to Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday). David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate. More Development Proposed in Anstey. Yet again I have to report on proposals for another development site in Anstey. I attended the public exhibition at Jubilee Hall on Friday 1st November which gave details of an outline planning application for the proposed development of up to 65 family homes off Cropston Road, together with provision of public access land and biodiversity enhancements within the Rothley Brook Valley. Whilst I was at the exhibition I was able to speak to many residents who had great concerns about this proposal. As I have previously stated I am against any new development of this size within Anstey, without major infrastructure enhancements to the highway. In my view the roads around Anstey are now at capacity levels without any more large scale development within the village. When the planning application comes forward I would encourage residents to have their say during the consultation period. Charnwood Local Plan, Core Strategy. Councillors at Charnwood Borough Council have voted to submit the Council's proposed Local Plan, Core Strategy to the Secretary of State so an examination in public can take place. The draft strategy outlines how the Borough could grow over the next 15 years in terms of housing, employment opportunities, schools, parks and other facilities. It is now up to the Inspector appointed by the Secretary of State to decide whether the Council's Plan can go forward with or without amendments. The Plan has been developed in light of evidence and following extensive consultation over the last eight years to identify the main areas of proposed development. I spoke at the meeting and voted in favour of the proposal, stating it is no good carrying on as we are, with piecemeal planning applications coming forward, which, when added together cause serious infrastructure issues within a local area. I also alluded to what had happened over the past few years where there has been a focus to develop houses in rural areas, such as we have seen in Anstey and Rothley and indications of proposals coming forward in smaller villages like Thurcaston. I am hopeful that as this Strategy goes forward it will add more weight in the planning process against these piecemeal applications, therefore Charnwood Borough Council, in my view, will have more control over future planning decisions. Greengate Lane Gypsy and Traveller Site. I attended and spoke at the City Council Planning Committee when they decided to permit the development of a Gypsy and
Traveller site which will have six pitches and six amenity buildings on Greengate Lane. I outlined my reasons why the Committee should refuse this application, especially as there was overwhelming opposition from local residents. Therefore, I was representing residents' views along with the Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council who had also objected. The decision was disappointing as it was acknowledged that this proposal was situated on the green wedge and would be in conflict with the Council's own policies. I also stated that residents had been in this situation before when Castle Hill was put forward for a Traveller Site, you may recall this was turned down by a Government Inspector. I understand that this decision to permit will now go to the Secretary of State before being finally approved. Loughborough Town Centre Transport Scheme. A consultation is in progress to give residents the opportunity to have their say on the Town Centre Bus Trial. A key element of the scheme is whether buses should be allowed to travel through the Market Place once the inner relief road is completed. This will enable general traffic to be removed through the Market Place allowing the area to become a more attractive pedestrian friendly area. The purpose of the consultation is to seek views and establish a preferred option for testing during the trial. Options will include: Continue to allow buses two way access through the A6 Market Place (as present): Allow buses to travel in one direction only (southbound) through the A6 Market Place: or to exclude buses from the area completely. I know many residents living in my Division travel on public transport to visit Loughborough. Therefore I would be grateful if they would respond to the consultation by visiting www.leics.gov.uk/lborobustrial or to obtain a hard copy by telephone 0116 3050002 before the closing date of 8th December 2013. Recycling and Household Waste Sites. During November there has been a change in the opening hours for the Recycling and Household Waste Sites. From the 1st of April to 30th September each year sites will be open 7 days per week 9,00am to 7.00pm. From 1st October to 31st March each year sites will be open 5 days per week 9.00am to 4.00pm. Sites will continue to be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. During the winter period sites will be closed for two days per week to avoid closure of all sites at the same time an alternative pattern of closure has been developed. The sites nearest to my Division will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday at Mountsorrel and Thursday and Friday at Loughborough.
Consultation by the County Council. Results of the County Council's consultation into how it can save £110 million and reshape services were published at the end of October. I thought it would be interesting for local residents to see some of the main areas that came forward during the consultation period. Over 7,200 gave their views over the summer, They identified services they wanted to protect, which they wanted to spend less on and their views on Council Tax levels favoured a rise. No decisions have been made yet, the budget proposals will be published in January and the full council will take the final decision on February 19th 2014. Residents said that the top services the council should save money on were: street lighting, grants to communities, funding for agencies, travel to school and grass cutting. The top services the council should protect were: gritting, older people community services, roads and paths and mental health. The full report is available at www.leics.gov.uk/future USE IT OR LOSE IT. I have been asked again to promote the trial late bus service into Anstey. This is for three months , therefore will be running during the Christmas period. This has been possible by the Anstey Parish Council biding for funding through the County Council’s Big Society Fund. This will be the No 54 Service operating from Charles Street, Stand CT, leaving Monday to Saturday at 23.10hrs. Timetables are available. I am most grateful for the help of the Parish Council, making this happen for the benefit of local residents. As we are nearing the festive season again may I wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year. If you need to contact me on any issue write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 0HH e-mail david.snartt@leics.gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804.

POLICEMATTERS Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 20 October and 20 November 2013 inclusive. You will see from the figures that there has been a worrying rise in burglaries of nondwellings and outbuildings. The majority of these are sheds and garages and, whilst the ‘actual’ theft of cycles is only recorded as 2 for the period, many of the outbuildings broken into have had cycles stolen also. Please take a look at your outbuilding security and consider good D-Locks for any cycles and special padlock alarms for sheds. If you see any person(s) acting suspiciously in your area, particularly late at night, please report it to Police on 101. As the Arctic blast begins to hit us and the sound of car windows being scraped is upon us, it is a good time to remind everyone not to leave cars unattended to warm up. This gives out a clear message to the thief ~ “Steal Me”!! To add to your problems your insurance will not want to know as the car was left insecure with keys inside. You can be sure criminals are rubbing their hands in this frosty weather – not to keep warm but thinking about the easy pickings when cars are left unattended with engine running! Don’t make it easy for them. As we approach the festive season, and this will be the last ‘Police Matters’ before the big day, we would like to offer some common sense advice to ensure that your property ~ is not a GIFT for someone else! Christmas should be a time for families and fun, but the facts are that each year there is an increase in house burglaries in the run up to the big day itself. Don’t let your Christmas be spoilt;
REMEMBER • Lock all doors and windows before going out • Tell neighbours of your plans • Consider the use of time switches for lights / Radios • Consider fitting outside security lights • Don’t leave expensive presents under the tree (or close curtains if you do to hide them from view) • Hide presents from view in vehicles (lock them in the boot) • Dispose of packaging securely (Don’t advertise what nice presents you’ve received!) Also…..”One for the Road?” Almost 300 people were killed in the UK in 2013 as the result of drink related collisions. It is clear that many drivers are still ignoring our advice and are putting others at risk by driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs. ‘Tis the season for Christmas Parties so don’t be caught out ~ sort out your ‘designated driver’ or book that Taxi. We hope that these simple measures will ensure you have a happy and secure Christmas. We would ask that you all remain vigilant within the community over the festive period and as always would ask you to call CRIMESTOPPERS if you have any information at all about crime. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. Just call – 0800 555 111 On behalf of the Anstey Safer Neighbour Policing Team may we take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a safe New Year, and to thank you all for your support in 2013.

BRADGATE LIONS CLUB NEWS...
We are now into our third month of our new ‘Lionistic’ year, and because of holidays and other commitments we do seem to have made a slow start with our community and fund raising efforts, but having said that, we have attended various village and school fetes and taken a group of 21 special needs pupils from South Gate School to Ashby Statutes, during the last few weeks. We are now ready to hit the ground running with the planned fund raising events, ‘Christmas Prize Draw Baskets’ in pubs throughout the area and our Santa Float in Villages in our district. All this will see us through to the New Year and a well earned rest, but we are already planning a ‘Race Evening’ for February 22nd. Again at Botcheston, and possibly an evening of nostalgia, with music from the 50s.60s. And 70s. At a venue yet to be decided. More news of this to follow later! Bradgate Lions are involved in all sorts of other activities such as the collecting and recycling of your old Glasses. Mobile ‘phones, Stamps, and Greeting cards. If you have any of these items available, just give Roger a ring and he will arrange to collect them.
A scheme to benefit everyone .
Provides essential information for the EMERGENCY SERVICES when they need it.
One of our main initiatives is supplying ‘Message in a Bottle’ and ‘Message in a Wallet’ to any person or organisation requiring them. These are simple tools, either to be kept at home in your refrigerator, or to be kept on your person in your purse or wallet. The Lions Message in a bottle is a simple idea that encourages people to keep their basic personal details in a common place, such as your ‘fridge, where they can be easily found in an emergency. Likewise the Message in a wallet is a similar device designed to help the emergency services in the event of an accident or emergency. It is a credit size card kept in a in a plastic case, in your wallet or purse. Both of these items are FREE. Some Doctors Surgeries, Health Centres and Chemists will have supplies, but they can be easily obtained from your local Lions Club members. If you would like any further information about any of the above items. Or about Bradgate Lions Club, please ring Roger on 01530 242912 who would be pleased to help. Roger Gamble - Lion

Blenheim Palace
On arrival at Blenheim Palace members of the W.I. and their guests were greeted by a panoramic view of the Palace park. The leaves on the trees shone yellow, gold and red in the glorious sunshine against a beautiful blue sky. Such was our entrance before we even took in the splendour of the Palace itself, and what splendour. Christmas trees and swags depicting carols were in abundance and to hear the organ being played in the library was an added bonus.

Ilfracombe The Palace itself is rich with history and artefacts with the main attraction being the Churchill rooms where Winston Churchill’s life is spread out for all to see, read and to hear taped recordings of his voice. Also on show was the bed where he was born. The weather was clement enough for us to be able to stroll around the park and the formal gardens without worrying about umbrellas or cold. There was a Craft Fair as well as the historic elements of the visit and many members took the opportunity to buy gifts for the upcoming Christmas celebrations. All in all a very enjoyable and relaxing day out. Krystyna Killam - Anstey W.I.
We’re prepared for winter – are you? That’s the message from Leicestershire County Council which has launched its winter weather campaign, ahead of the gritters which went out for the first time, on Friday 8th November. The county council has 17 gritters, 80 drivers and a network of snow wardens, farmers and 4x4 drivers ready to take to the roads. Its five grit barns are stocked up with 18,500 tonnes of grit – a mixture of molasses and rock salt – and there are more than 50 farmers who, during deep snow, will fit ploughs to their tractors, to clear roads. However, the council wants residents to know they can also do their bit by preparing for the colder months. Peter Osborne, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We always prepare early for the winter to ensure we are ready to keep the road network up and running during icy and snowy weather. “We’ve also taken stock of 5 new gritters this year, replacing older vehicles, completing the upgrading of our fleet of 17 gritters at a total cost of £1.7m. “As well as this we’ve also uploaded a helpful gritting map, which people can click on to see which local routes are covered.” Further information on being prepared this winter can be found at: www.leics.gov.uk/gritting. Information about gritting and dealing with winter weather will also be available via Twitter by following @LeicsCountyHall
