Interesting ideas for your conser vatory... With escalating heating costs in the winter and with glass/polycarbonate roofs acting as green houses during the summer, is it time to re evaluate your conservatory in line with modern requirements. Charnwood conservatories specialise in the remodelling of existing conservatories. We start by removing the existing roof covering and running in new structural elements to the roof where necessary.

The Anstey branch of The Royal British Legion would like to say an enormous ‘thank you’ to all who gave so generously to the 2014 Poppy Appeal. With your help the total raised by the branch (including a single donation of £5000:00 !) was in the region of £22,500:00. Once again ‘Thank you!

Have You Heard Of Charnwood Connect? We are a Loughborough based partnership of advice agencies that help people to sort out their problems and get on with their lives. And, despite the continuing funding cuts, as advice agencies we are still here and still free! Partner agencies include Living Without Abuse, Youth Shelter, The Bridge, Charnwood CAB, PACE (Pro-Active Community Endeavour), Human Rights & Equalities Charnwood, John Storer Charnwood and Charnwood Borough Council. How To Use Our Services? We have always provided information and support face to face but can now offer a little extra through our new Charnwood Connect Hub, a website that gives you information on the services we offer and how to access them, and provides links to information on your legal rights, money advice, welfare benefits and local community organisations. As it’s on-line it’s available to you wherever you are and whenever you want to use it. Check out the website here: www.charnwoodconnect.org.uk Join Us! Remarkably, our services continue not just through the commitment of our experienced and knowledgeable staff, but also through the invaluable efforts of our amazing volunteers. Without their support we couldn’t provide the breadth and depth of services that we do. They come from all walks of life and all age ranges, from students to retired and everything in between. Our volunteers give their time as mentors, advisers, receptionists, food parcel packers, researchers and befrienders. They bring enthusiasm and experience to PR and fundraising activities. They provide leadership as trustees and board members.

NORWOOD PRESS T: 01530 262020 E: info@norwoodpress.co.uk W: www.norwoodpress.co.uk

As well as putting a lot in, our volunteers gain from the experience too – in terms of confidence, new opportunities, training and experience that help them to feel good about themselves, play a role in our communities and develop skills that are useful when seeking paid work.

Norwood Press, Unit 1, Moore Road, South Leicester Industrial Estate, Ellistown, LE67 1EU

If you’re interested in getting involved as a volunteer do get in touch. We have a variety of opportunities in different agencies and whether you’re available for a few hours each week or just on an occasional basis we’d like to hear from you. You can phone us or drop us an email and find out more.

Village Housing Needs To Be Assessed

Independent Housing Needs Surveys of Thurcaston and Cropston are to be carried out to find out the true extent of housing need in the Parish. Accompanying this magazine (Thurcaston and Cropston Only) is a housing needs questionnaire, prepared by Midlands Rural Housing. The survey is being carried out at the request of Charnwood Borough Council with the full permission of the Parish Council. The returned questionnaires will enable a report to be written which will identify whether or not the housing needs, particularly the affordable housing needs, of local people are being met.

Please could as many households as possible complete and return the questionnaire (a freepost envelope is provided), either to indicate a housing need or simply to make comment on village life and housing issues. All the information is confidential and replies will not be seen by the Parish Council, the Borough Council or any other organisation. This independent, commissioned survey will provide clear evidence of local housing need and is essential to help both maintain and protect the village and ensure local needs are identified. Please return the survey before the closing date. You can be assured that the Parish Council will be fully consulted on the results and on any possible options for solutions that may be required. If you have any questions please contact midlandsrural@midlandsrh.org.uk.

ANSTEY CHRISTMAS GALA Anstey Gala Committee would like to thank all involved with the Christmas Gala on the 6th of December 2014. We were very lucky with the seasonal dry weather. Many people turned out to support the event and take their children to visit Father Christmas. Thanks especially to Santa and to members of Anstey Players who created a very impressive new Grotto in the United Reformed Church on Bradgate Road! Thanks also, to the three churches for participating, providing refreshments & use of their halls for craft stalls, raffles and so on. Latimer and Woolden Hill school choirs and Ratby Junior Band entertained the crowds very well in two of the churches. Festivities concluded in the Nook with carol singing accompanied by the brass band and the Christmas tree lights were switched on by Father Christmas. Well done to Caroline & Claire’s Preschool, who won the Christmas tree competition held in St. Mary's parish church this year and thank you to all who took part. Voting was done with pennies and the winners received £29.43. The rest of the voting amounted to £105.93, which has been donated to the Anstey Town Charity. The Christmas Gala only 'broke even' this year, as the Gala committee had overheads to cover and did not run refreshments, which would have made a profit. (We didn't have a large enough committee to run one at the Jubilee Hall).

Anstey Gala 2015 - Saturday 6th September We meet at 7.30pm on the first Monday in the month, at The Crown in Bradgate Road. Why don't you come along and see what happens? Do you belong to a local group or sports club? Could you represent them on the Gala Committee and earn some money for them, or volunteer individually? You will be most welcome and the "jobs" are already filled for this year, so it's not too daunting! Please contact us at ansteygala@aol.co.uk or ring Anne on 2363977. The 2014 AGM took place in December and a new committee formed... The Summer Gala made a profit of ÂŁ2396.28 This was divided into "shares" earned by members of the Gala committee, for :a) attendance at meetings, b) helping all day, on gala day, c) positions held. Committee members nominate local groups or organisations which they represent. Alternatively, they nominate a charity where the money is to go. Cheques were presented at the AGM. The Gala committee would like to thank all those who supported the 2014 Summer & Christmas Galas. In particular, Bosworth Wright, Eleet Travel, Alan Keith Hairdressers and Britvic PLC (Soft Drinks), along with many local traders who regularly donate raffle prizes. Thanks also, to Anstey Parish Council, the Anstey Town Charity and all three churches, as well as many local people for their ongoing support!

Thurcaston Playgroup Thurcaston Playgroup finished 2014 with a Christmas party for the children. Santa brought a presesnt for all the children who attend on a regular basis. A big thank you to all the parents and grandparents who helped to make the party fun by providing food and also for their contiunal support and help with running our local playgroup. The new year has brought the cold and frost and the comfort of the Thurcaston Memorial Hall has been very helpful to help burn energy and keep our little ones busy. The children have had fun on the bikes, indoor slide, pop-up tent and playing with the balls. Activities have included painting, drawing and sticking. The two hours that playgroup provides is a great way to help the children form new friendship as well as a chance for parents and grandparents to indulge in a cuppa and a chat. If you are looking for a relaxed, friendly local playgroup for your children (0-5 years of age), then please call on 0116 210 9188 or just turn up on Tuesday mornings (term time), 9am-11am at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Cost is ÂŁ2.00 per family. Look forward to meeting new familes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not

just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Anstey W.I. At our first meeting of the New Year our committee obviously felt that we would need some sage advice as to how to face this new year. This advice came in the shape of Maureen Watson from 'Fit For Life'. Maureen started off the evening by reminding us of the need to eat well by having a varied and sensible diet; to use our minds by doing crosswords, puzzles; and to use our bodies in physical exercise. All these things would help to prolong our well-being, actually, things we already knew but need to be reminded of on a regular basis. That was the easy part of the talk. Then came the physical bit. Maureen had us all standing up and doing exercises. Each exercise was of short duration and some of them could be performed whilst sitting on a chair, for the less able. Sadly, Anstey W.I. seem to have members who are less than co-ordinated. Between having to move feet and hands and arms to music no less – oh dear, and as to using a bean bag!!!! Thank goodness no balls were involved. The evening was really enjoyable and had us all in hysterics (particularly the writer of this piece). What a way to start the new year. Everyone's endorphins were really enhanced to the extent that a homage was paid to Mo Farah. Anstey were also gladdened to be joined by four new members which is also a moral booster.

While most of us know that the council are responsible for fixing these things, we may not know which council, let along which department in which council. With FixMy Street, all you have to do is locate the problem on a map, and select a category: the site then sends it off to the right place to get it fixed.

All reports are published on the site, as well as being sent to the council. Browsing your own postcode can be interesting, as you soon learn what the persistent problems are in your area, and whether or not they are being fixed. There's also the opportunity to discuss individual reports in the comments section.

FixMyStreet comes from the UK not-for-profit organisation mySociety, and is one of its longest-running and most-used services. It is just one of several projects aimed at making it easier for citizens to get things changed in their own community. So, next time you see something that needs fixing, be it a broken paving slab or a flickering streetlight, all you need to remember is FixMyStreet.com.

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate.

Local News. Charnwood MP Stephen Dorrell has decided not to stand again at the General Election on May 7th this year. There is a selection process being conducted to select a new Conservative candidate for the Charnwood Constituency. I have received information from the Planning Inspectorate that an Inspector will be making a visit to assess the proposed diversion of the Public Bridleway K57 at Pocket Gate Cottage, Woodhouse Eaves. The purpose of the visit is to enable the Inspector to see the surrounding area and to note physical features before coming to a decision. There have been several objections/comments against the diversion of the bridleway.

Consultation Mobile Library Service. Recently I have given details about the public consultation on community libraries, of which Anstey Library is within my Division. This consultation did not include questions about changes to the mobile library service. Therefore a new consultation is taking place to ensure this service can meet local needs. The aim is to have an effective, flexible and reliable service across Leicestershire. The County Council is proposing to: Change the frequency of visits to locations currently served by a mobile library to either once every three weeks or once a month: Update the network of mobile library stops to take into account new housing developments: Reflect actual service usage. The council is looking to make any changes from September 2015. There is also a potential for delivering additional services via mobile libraries including items for sale such as newspapers, postage stamps, greetings cards and stationery. As the mobile library service is used across my Division, I would be grateful if residents complete the consultation so that the County Council can better understand how these proposals could affect you. The consultation closes on Wednesday 8th April 2015. For more information and to tell how these proposals might affect you go to www.leics.gov.uk/ haveyoursay/mobilelibraries, for general enquiries or comments telephone 0116 3054699 or e-mail futurelibraries@leics.gov.uk.

Broadband Provision. I have received an update from officers at County Hall on broadband provision across my Division.

Leicestershire County Council is currently working with BT and Charnwood Borough Council to increase superfast broadband coverage as part of an £18 million contract. The County Council expect to be able to increase high speed fibre broadband coverage to 96% of Leicestershire premises by spring 2016. I understand this to be the latest position in my area. Woodhouse: Through the Leicestershire programme one cabinet serving about 150 premises has been upgraded giving coverage to residents and businesses in the village. Woodhouse Eaves: One cabinet has been upgraded serving almost 400 premises, mainly in the south of the village. There are a number of premises directly connected to the telephone exchange which at this time have not been upgraded, It is expected that another cabinet will be installed to deliver fibre broadband to these premises by summer 2015, funded by Charnwood Borough Council. More information is being sought to confirm all premises within the village will be able to access fibre broadband through Superfast Leicestershire. Swithland: Currently there is no fibre broadband coverage. It is however part of the Superfast Broadband Project and is expected to be deployed by summer 2015. Anstey: All cabinets commercially by BT.

were

upgraded

Cropston: The cabinet which serves the village was upgraded commercially by BT. Thurcaston: The cabinet which serves the village was upgraded commercially by BT. Newtown Linford: It is expected to be upgraded as part of the Superfast Broadband Project. Expecting the cabinet to be upgraded by summer 2015, funded by Charnwood Borough Council. There may be some anomalies in certain areas, please let me know if you have any concerns. Ulverscroft: Due to the dispersed nature of premises within the Ulverscroft area, addresses are connected to a different number of cabinets. I hope to have more information and an update late March 2015.

Items from the Charnwood Highway Forum. As Chairman of the Forum I thought you may be interested in items that were discussed at

the last meeting on 7th January 2015. Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV's) Using Unsuitable Roads. There are two types of constraint on the movement of HGV's. A weight limit meaning it is an offence for any vehicle over the weight limit displayed on the sign to pass. This is usually used for a structural weight limit, for example a weak bridge. The more common sign in my Division is a weight restriction for vehicles over a certain weight but with exceptions. These signs are known as environmental weight restrictions, generally forming a zone and are designed to prevent the regular passage of HGV's over 7.5t, not requiring access for collection from or delivery to premises within the zone. Much of the local area is covered by environmental weight restriction zones. Any HGV's over the weight limit within a weight restricted zone which is not conforming to the restrictions outlined above are committing an offence which is enforceable by the Police. A mechanism is in place for residents to report potential abuse of weight restrictions by e-mailing details to weight.restricted@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk. There is also advisory signage consisting generally of white on blue signs stating "Unsuitable for Heavy Goods Vehicles" As the signing is advisory, there is no recourse to the law if an HGV tries to negotiate the road. That said, the signs are generally considered effective most of the time. Sometimes the standard excuse for vehicles using unsuitable roads is that "my satnav told to go this way".

Future Provision of Street Lighting. Already the County Council has made savings by part-time night lighting, switching off and dimming of Leicestershire's street lighting along with notable reductions in the Council's current carbon footprint. It is now proposed that a full-scale introduction of LED lighting, which could lead to further savings being achieved. The installation of LED lights would not reverse the part-night lighting programme. There was also a petition presented on behalf of the residents of Wallis Close raising concerns

with indiscriminate parking on Wallis Close, Thurcaston. This will now be considered by officers at County Hall, with a view to make recommendations about the issues raised in the petition.

Diary of Village Events. I have received information that the Rural Community Council (RCC) is again compiling its diary of village events booklet which promotes activities taking place in rural areas of Leicestershire and Rutland in 2015. The diary will include information on any type of community run event or guided walks taking place. Printed copies of the diary will be distributed to libraries, museums, parish councils etc. Events and walks should be taking place during April 2015 to December 2015 and entries will be published free of charge. To ensure entry to the publication please return your forms as soon as possible but no later than 9th February 2015. Events received after this date will be placed on the RCC website. Entries can be submitted directly to the RCC village events page at www.ruralcc.org.uk or an event form can be completed and returned directly to mdakin@ruralcc.org.uk or by post to 133 Loughborough Road, Leicester. Report from Anstey Parish Council The annual budget for 2015/ 2016 for Anstey Parish Council has been decided. It was agreed unanimously by Councillors that there will be no increase to residents for the forthcoming financial year. Although there will be no financial increase to residents the amount of money raised will increase, this is due to the way in which the tax base figure is calculated. The Parish Council are aware of the financial pressures that Anstey residents face and are keen not to add to these. In their considerations the Parish Council recognise that Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council are considering financial cuts and the Parish Council needs to be in a position to support local services. The growing population increases the need for more money to support it. There will be an increase in public open spaces that the Parish Council are responsible for and budgets are in place to maintain them. The new allotment site on Groby Road will need financial input to get it up and running. I was very pleased to be invited to Latimer Primary School with the Chairman of the Council Councillor Martin Broomhead the visit included a question and answer session with the children and a power point presentation that the children had prepared. We were delighted to see the good work the children are carrying out both inside and outside of school. Thank you for all your feedback on the Christmas lights in the village this has been very helpful for informing the Council of your views.

Forth coming meetings of the Parish Council 17th February, 10th March, 31st March, 21st April Meetings start at 7.30 at the Jubilee Hall, all members of the public are invited.

Want to support LOROS? You’re barking up the right tree! LOROS, the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice are calling upon the nations favourite four legged friends to help raise the vital funds needed to provide care and support to over 2,500 patients and their families each year, at their annual Paws 4 a Cause event. Paws 4 a Cause on Sunday 29th March, is a sponsored 4km dog walk starting and finishing in the scenic grounds of Abbey Park, Leicester. There are two start times to choose from 10am or 11am and every dog will receive their very own ‘doggy’ bag at the end. There will also be a prize for the dog who raises the most sponsorship! Laura Fitzsawyer, Fundraising Co-ordinator said, “This is the 4th year that we have organised Paws 4 a Cause. It is a great event that is fun for all the family! Over the past 4 years it has raised over £30,000 for the Hospice, and this year we want to make that total to over £40,000! The route has changed slightly this year, starting at the Oval rather than the Bandstand. We are extremely grateful to Abbey Park and Abbey Park Café for supporting our event again this year.” For FREE registration and to receive your fundraising pack, please register at loros.co.uk/paws or call the Fundraising Department on 0116 231 8431.

POLICEMATTERS

Crime Figures 20th Dec 2014 to 18th Jan 2015

Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 20 December 2014 and 18 January 2015 inclusive.

Burglary Dwelling – 2 Long Close, Wolfe End

The crime figures show 4 more theft from motor vehicles this period. The attacks on vehicles appear to be focusing on work vans (as per update and crime prevention advice in last month’s article) and also vehicles with items left on display. The most popular item to be taken in all vehicle thefts is the Sat Nav system. If a Sat Nav is left on display then the temptation for the criminal is sometimes too much. Please ensure that Sat Nav’s and other ‘gadgets’ are removed from the vehicle completely, and do not leave cradles and/or cables in place. If the Sat Nav cradle leaves a mark on the windscreen have a cloth handy in your vehicle to wipe the mark away. Please be aware of what you are leaving ‘on show’ in your car overnight – even coats on back seats may be enough to tempt the thief.

Burglary - 1 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage, Etc) - Summerfield Drive

Whilst we are on the subject of vehicle crime, Jack Frost has been calling pretty regularly over the last few weeks and the sound of scraping windscreens has been commonplace. It is therefore a good time to remind drivers not to leave their vehicles unattended with engines running to clear the windscreen. This is the easiest theft of a vehicle for any criminal, and to make matters worse your insurance will not pay out as the keys were in the ignition and vehicle insecure ~~~ Don’t be caught out whilst you thaw it out!!! New bus shelter – Link Road After a lot of hard work and consultation through local and county councils, a new wooden bus shelter has recently been erected on Link Road (by the green at the top of Dalby Road). Sadly, between 15:45hrs Friday 16th January and 08:00hrs Saturday 17th January, this bus shelter was vandalised with a number of the panels and wooden seats being scratched with a sharp implement. Did you see anything? If anybody has any information then please contact me on telephone number 101 and leaving me a message by keying in number 6662. This bus shelter was erected for the benefit of the community around the Link Road / Dalby Road / Hollow Road area, and it is a shame that it has been vandalised in such a manner. Could all residents that overlook the bus shelter please be vigilant and report any persons they believe to be acting suspiciously to Police on 101.

Theft of Motor Vehicle – 0 Theft from Motor Vehicle - 4 (inc Attempts) – Gretton Drive, Stadon Road, Hazlehead Road, Papermill Close Damage to Motor Vehicle – 4 Latimer Strett, Wolfe End, Cropston Road x 2 Criminal Damage Dwelling – 1 Cropston Road Criminal Damage - 1 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage Etc) – Link Road (new bus shelter) Theft Store – 6 Co-op x 6 Theft Cycle – 0 Theft Person - 0

As always, we would ask all residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious person(s) or activity to Police on 101 or, if you feel a crime is taking place, 999. If you have any information at all about crime please call CRIMESTOPPERS. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. Just call – 0800 555 111 PCSO 6662 Phil WRIGHT - Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Team - Charnwood Local Policing Unit

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Yes! its Anstey “Your Local” time again, the days are very slowly getting longer, and my health despite the odd blip seems to being picking up, according to my consultants at the LRI. One said to me recently “You’ve got to keep going you have an election to contest in May” (NO I am not putting myself forward as a Prospective Parliamentary Party candidate for Charnwood!) But I am planning to run in both the Charnwood Borough Council and Anstey Parish Council Elections on May 7th. 2015. Which I have done successfully, with your support, for a number of years. I do hope your mind isn’t completely numbed by the time we get to Vote…

“Discus” Dan Greaves. Won the sportsman of the year award (2014) for his success in the commonwealth and European Games when he won a Gold medal in both events of the F42/44 discus contests. Dan born in October 1982, as also won World Championships medals (4 Silvers) and Paralympic medals in 2000 Sydney (Silver) 2004 Athens (Gold) 2008 Beijing (Bronze) and Silver in the 2012 London Paralympics games. So near to getting Anstey a Golden post Box? Not bad from two lads who were born in Anstey, and attended Anstey Schools.

Council Tax No increase.

His chosen charity is “Children with Cancer.” If you would like to sponsor him please go to:uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ryansutherington to register your donation. VMG is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on the charity’s behalf where the donor is eligible.

THANKS GEOFF AND MICK? Big thank-you to Geoff Preston and Micky Wilkes for compiling a DVD of people I know through singing, at a recent Charity Vinyl night held at Anstey Nomads FC. It really was a lovely gesture, and a nice surprise to know that they want me back singing at the next Charity “Do” to be held in March 2015. I don’t know if I am up to performing “Mustang Sally” yet but I’ll be there if I possibly can be. Thanks again to everyone who took part. Did you really ALL sing the “Laughing Policeman?”

Sports Award Winners. Snooker legend Willie Thorne and Paralympics Discus champion Dan Greaves have both won Sports awards’ in the annual Leicester Mercury Sports awards held recently at the King Power Stadium. Well done to local born lads with their successes’.

Impact Team? As from January 21st the county’s impact team will be around Anstey on 2 nights a week talking to kids who may be drifting into Anti-Social behaviour. The project will concentrate around the Nook, Bradgate, Cropston and Stadon Road areas. I have had a number of people ring me regarding these areas. Hopefully the team will be able to address the issues arising from ASB such as graffiti, criminal damage, noise etc. by meeting some of the needs of young people and the wider community. The team will be deployed in the areas and will engage with the youngsters identified in order to address the issues and put programmes in place to keep them out of trouble. I hope those youngsters’ involved in any discussions will not be silly and come up with some sensible requests; the IMPACT team are here to help, if they can.

My Nephew, Ryan Sutherington, former footballer at Leicester City & Rushden & Diamonds FC of Rosebery Road, Anstey, will be running in this year’s Virgin London Marathon for the first time on April 26th. 26+ miles, Ryan is already in full training with the new Anstey Running Club. Team Anstey amblers and runners?

Ryan is looking to raise £1,500 for the charity. So far including gift aid, he has raised £299.90p.

Both Charnwood Borough and Anstey Parish Council, due to good budgeting have come up with a 0% increase in the coming year’s council Tax. You may still have to pay more because there is still the County Council and Fire/Police budgets to be arrived at. But we have “done” our bit!

William Joseph “Willie” Thorne. Snookers “Mr Maximum” and now a regular commentator on the game won the lifetime achievement award. Willie, born in Anstey on 4th. March 1954 won 1 ranking tournament and 6 nonranking tournaments in a professional career which stretched from 1975 until 2002. He is also well known for his charity work, and as written a book!

London Marathon 2015.

And Finally.

Anstey after Midnight? DARK! I know many lights go out after midnight throughout the village, far too many for my liking. Now I understand from a meeting I attended of the Charnwood Highways Forum, that even more maybe turned off in the future along with many illuminated road signs!!! The illuminated signs will be replaced with new reflective ones. I am a little concerned to say the least with these propositions. Please get in touch through the usual channels if you are not getting what you think is right for you or our community. I’ll do my best to put you right. Yours Sincerely

Cllr. John J. Sutherington.☺

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club Women’s Farm and Garden Association by Annette Spurr

working gardeners. 2 days of practical training per week for a year is provided in a suitable garden under the tutelage of a suitably qualified and experienced gardener. Together with workshop sessions for members and trainees in gardens around the country, the placements give the students a wide ranging experience to equip them for a career in horticulture.

The Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club started 2015 with the Annual General Meeting, celebrating the previous year’s successful programme, electing the new committee and thanking all those who had contributed in 2014. Our speaker in our 2015 programme was one of the members of the Club. Annette Spurr talked to us about the Women’s Farm and Garden Association, known as WRAGS. The organisation was formed in 1899 by 22 women including Gertrude Jeckell following an international conference. They were unhappy about the attitude of society towards women workers in the area of horticulture. By 1910, an education committee had been formed and examinations and awards in gardening and poultry keeping were being awarded to women by the Association.

Annette talked about her role as a local co-ordinator, selecting and recruiting suitable students, and matching them to available placements in the East Midlands. Over 100 gardens around the country offer such placements. Trainees are expected to keep a diary of their experience as well as sending an assessment form to their coordinator once a month. These diaries are very useful for future reference.

Annette’s placement in a well know local county nursery and garden was documented through some lovely photos including one showing the less glamorous side of nursery work, taking penstemen cuttings, for four days solid!

The needs of the country during the 1st World War were ably supported by WRAGS as the organisation (now called the Women’s Farm & Garden Union). By 1918 the membership stood at 1100, and 9000 women had passed through its training farms.

The final slides in the presentation showed some of Annette’s favourite hellebores and as a final flourish ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos of her own garden as shown below. To find out more about the Women’s Farm and Garden Association go to www.wfga.org.uk

By the 21st Century the Association has developed a new function. With charitable status, it is providing training for woman and men who are looking to train and qualify as

The gardening club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall. Whether an experienced gardener or an enthusiastic beginner we are sure you will something of interest in this year’s programme. The membership fee is £12 for the year or £3.00 per meeting. And, if you would like to come as a visitor and then you decide to join, your visitor fee will be refunded!! So, if you are interested in gardening come and give the Club a try.

The next club events are:Wednesday 11th February, 7.45 pm Saving Seeds, Saving Money – Pauline Pears A talk that will encourage more of us to save seed and have a go at ‘growing our own’. The talk will explain the dos and don’ts in order to achieve a very satisfying and money saving activity. Wednesday 11th March, 7.45 pm Tulip Time – John Gibson Tulips, crocus, daffodils, hyacinths, etc. A look at the many spring flowers grown from bulbs. Concentrating mainly on tulips, this talk covers many varieties with a ‘visit’ to Keukenhof Gardens and the Dutch bulb fields. Wednesday 8th April, 7.45 pm Healthy Eating with Fruit & Veg David Thorton A welcome return for this enthusiastic, knowledgeable and entertaining speaker. This time he will be looking at the very best produce to grow in order to promote health and stimulate vitality and energy.

The recent announcement that NatWest is to close its Anstey Branch in March (along with Syston) prompted me to share some pictures drawn from the Anstey Millennium Collection. Banking in Anstey started at the end of the 19thC with the Northamptonshire Union Bank (1836-1920) responding to the needs of the rapidly growing Boot and Shoe industry and it’s workforce in the village. (Picture 898) shows the building in the Nook in 1920 when the Northamptonshire Union Bank merged with the National Provincial Bank (1836-1970) – Later (picture 900) c1961 together with the interior shot (picture 901) with a notice announcing the arrival of a Saturday banking service. At the same time that the Northamptonshire Union came to Anstey, the Westminster Bank (1834-1968) rented a front room of Eric and Adah Johnstone’s terraced cottage home at 44 Bradgate Road (picture 896) c1968 – this branch was only open once a week on payday Friday at 10am to noon and was manned by one cashier and a guard. July 1968 aw the merger of the Westminster (and closure of the Bradgate Road branch) with the National Provincial (picture 902) which became The National Westminster Bank and in turn today’s NatWest – (picture’s 903 and 904) show the interior in 1990.

Janet Elverstone and her husband Lewis, called me up to see if I’d like to come and look at a war artefact they’d discovered. Belonging to her uncle Arch. Barker who served in the Chindits, this artefact has got me quite excited!

We’ve all had, or will have the unenviable task of going through a deceased relative’s paperwork. It can be upsetting and disheartening, especially if they never liked to throw anything away! But one lucky Leicestershire resident recently discovered a gem whilst looking through her Uncles paperwork.

It’s a beautifully preserved, postcard sized book sent to Arch when he was out in India from the Anstey War Service League. Apparently HYHU\ VHUYLQJ RIÀFHU from Anstey was sent one of these little book for Christmas in 1944. The book contains lists of all the Anstey men and women serving with H.M Forces at home and overseas. It also has some beautiful illustrations, a story and a poem to keep the soldiers busy and remind them of home. For me one of the most wonderful additions to this book are the letters from the

people of Anstey to the serving soldiers. Messages from the Parish Council, Police Force, Fire Service, WI and Schools all serve to make this a very personal piece. Alice Smart writes as an Anstey mother and G. Greatorex as an Anstey Wife. Two beautiful letters are written from Betty Thurman and Michael Martin of Latimer Street School and it would be interesting to see if they or their relatives still live in Anstey. Please get in touch if you have a link to this publication or if you know if anything like this was sent out by other Leicestershire villages? We’d be really interested to hear from relatives of those who contributed to the book and also if you have a copy of it too. If you’d like further information about the book or a list of all those who contributed please do get in touch and I’ll send you some more images of the pages. I can be contacted via editor@openboxpromotions.co.uk or 0800 6446 150 or by post to 42 Forest Rise, Kirby Muxloe LE9 2HQ. I’ll bring you an update if I hear from anyone, if not , DVVXPH WKLV LV D YHU\ UDUH ÀQG LQGHHG Well done Uncle Arch for keeping it in such good condition and bringing it all the way back from India for us to enjoy!

Caroline & Claire's PreSchool 10th birthday family funday, Newtown Linford. Thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed a fabulous funday whilst supporting the Pre-School, it was lovely to see faces from the past, present and also some new ones. The children and parents thoroughly enjoyed playing with the various types of play dough, although the chocolate dough proved to be the most popular with all ages! The corn flour was also well explored by both children and parents, all commenting on how they loved it during our parents morning sessions.

Film Presentations

From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council January's film "Belle" was a captivating true story. Although Dido Belle was of mixed race, she was brought up in the aristocratic family of her uncle. The owners of the slave ship "Zong" had murdered their slaves to claim insurance and the ensuing trial posed uncomfortable questions about human life. Belle fell in love with the idealistic lawyer and by becoming involved in this case, she hastened the struggle to abolish slavery in England. "Jimmy's Hall " will be shown on Friday February 13th and lasts 109 minutes. This 1930's historical drama is based on a true story about the causes of Jimmy Gralton's deportation from Ireland. He builds a rural dance hall to meet the needs of young people in County Leitrim, against the wishes of the Church and the local landowners. He determines that all people should be allowed to celebrate and dance as free human beings “The Hundred-Foot Journey" will be shown on Friday March 13th and lasts 124 minutes.

Thank you also for the amazing response to our balloon decorating competition, we had over 50 entries all of which were brilliant! The winners were; Poppy Appleton age 2, Will Robinson age 4, Erin Ellicock age 9, Kittie Keane age 10 and as we had so many adults enter, this also was judged (Independently by Mick) and the winner was Bonnie Graham. Well done everyone! I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all my staff who have and continue to work so hard to make our Pre-School the special and happy place it is today.

This uplifting comedy drama, starring Helen Mirren, charts the battle of wits between two restaurateurs in a close-knit French village. Circumstances necessitate Papa Kadam, with his Indian family, setting up his business across the road from the eating establishment of Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). They eventually learn to see eye to eye over the simmering saucepans and as they lovingly stir their thick sauces, our mouths water. "Mr Turner" will be shown on Friday April 10th. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £5 and concessions are £4.50. There will be refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets can be purchased via the parish office 0116 236 7626 or at the door.

FEBRUARYS NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW Firstly I am must apologise for not submitting an article in last month’s edition. Due to personal reasons I was unable to write the article.

NEW SCHEMES As you would have read in last month’s Police Matters we would like to make Anstey a 100% NHW area during 2015. It is achievable as we are very nearly there now. The biggest areas still to be covered are the Gynsill Close/ Gorse Hill area, and the new St James’s development on Groby Road. I was hoping to have already set this area up in 2014 but unfortunately I was let down by people who said they would be NHW coordinators, who then changed their minds, or didn’t answer my emails. I did manage to set up a scheme for the residents of Glover Close. Hopefully they will get their NHW street sign installed soon. If anyone who lives on the St James’s development would like to be a coordinator but needs more information on what this entails, please get in touch with me.

WELCOME MEETING I must also apologise to the residents, of Charnwood Road, James Street, The Close and Choyce Close for the long delay in organising your welcome meeting. I have not forgotten you, and I am hoping your welcome meeting will be in early February. I have had some bad news in that the coordinator for Charnwood Road has had to resign for personal reasons. I am hoping to be able to appoint someone else soon. I will

send the coordinators the venue, date and time of the meeting as soon as possible.

URGENTLY NEEDED I have recently received the sad news that the NHW coordinator for Leicester Road/Ned Ludd Close, Anelia Goranova has resigned for personal reasons, and has left Anstey. If anyone in this area is interested in taking over from Anelia please let me know. This scheme is registered, but just needs the welcome packs giving out and the street signs putting up. The following schemes are also still awaiting a new coordinator to enable them to be re-registered so that residents can receive the benefits of belonging to Anstey NHW. • Balladine Road

are moving to the new Police Station in Loughborough. There will be no change to the Safer Neighbourhood Teams as they will still operate from their community Police Stations within their villages.

NEW ANSTEY NHW WEB SITE Back in August last year, Anstey NHW applied for a free web site from the national NHW, and I am pleased to say we were lucky enough to receive one. It has taken a long while from applying for one to actually receiving the test documents. Once it is up and running to our satisfaction I will let you all have the web site address.

ANSTEY GALA

• Broughton Close • Charles Drive • Falcon Road • Kitchener Road • Netherfield Road/Holgate Close A coordinators job is not time consuming, just a representative for your area. They receive up to date crime reports and any important information the Police pass on to help them keep Anstey a safe place to live.

CLOSURE OF SYSTON POLICE STATION

I know that this year’s gala is a long way off yet, but if anyone has received any unwanted Christmas presents, can you please think about contributing them to our tombola stand in September. Please get in touch with your coordinator who will pass them onto me. If you would like to get in touch with me, my details are: Phone no 0116 2365745 or diane@ansteynhw.co.uk

The Martin High School... L

Christmas at the MHS……. Well done everyone who participated in raising funds for LOROS and Jade’s Retreat at our Christmas Fair. We have raised a stunning £2888. A huge thank you to many local Businesses in Anstey, Glenfield and Beaumont Leys who kindly donated prizes for the raffle.

Follow up to OFSTED inspection………

Loren Wells and Ria Winterton of Year 8 have raised a further £300 with a sponsored walk for Jade’s Retreat.

We are most unhappy with the recent inspection and report. We have officially complained about the nature of the inspection and content of the report. We believe that evidence shows a number of the findings within the report are inaccurate and unfounded.

Lisa Sharma and her catering team did a sterling job once again with the Christmas Dinner, and even persuaded some of the staff to dress up as elves!

Some aspects of the report are accurate and are being immediately followed up. We will have a busy term ensuring:• That our Year 11 students fully achieve their potential in the GCSE exams

New Library........ Our new state of the art 200 square metre building is now complete and up and running, it has been incredibly well received from both students and staff, it will provide an extensive library and resource centre.

• All our students progress to achieve their potential. • We secure the remaining buildings we require to bring the school up to spec.

Mrs Melissa Turner – Library Manager

• We address the key challenges posed by the Ofsted report

Milestone for our Headteacher... Martin Furniss our Headteacher had a special birthday this month, and Lisa from the catering team made him and all the staff cakes to celebrate.

We are addressing the key findings by:• Reviewing how we mark to ensure all our students make progress in their learning. Currently this is mixed. We will ensure that every student is given feedback that they understand and that clearly points to how they can make further progress. • Developing how all teaching staff use questioning to check student progress in learning • To re-design our student database. We have adopted the Go4Schools package which will enable us to accurately chart and analyse all students progress. This will in due course provide us with more information about our students performance. These three key developments will address the essential points raised through inspection.

February In The Garden Although February is usually cold there is always plenty to do if the weather permits. Wisterias can be pruned back now, cutting the summer shoots back to 2 to 3 buds. Towards the end of the month prune summer flowering Clematis before the new growth starts. Also cut back winter interest shrubs (eg Cornus and Salix) down to their bases. Cut back old foliage from ornamental grasses, also any remaining herbaceous can be cleared up. Prune winter flowering Jasmine (nudiflorum) after flowering to encourage new growth for next year, and prune dead and crossing branches of winter flowering shrubs once they have finished flowering. Continue to dead head winter flowering pansies, this will encourage a fresh batch of flowers when the weather warms up. Divide snowdrops and replant. If you need to move any shrubs/trees now is a good time to do it. Take as much soil as possible from around the roots to help the plant settle in its new home. Continue to harvest leeks, parsnips, brussels and other brassicas. Seed potatoes and onion sets are now in so if you are after particular varieties get them bought or ordered. You can start chitting early potatoes in a cool, frost-free place. Egg trays are perfect for this. Sow veg seeds such as onions and celariac under cover and prepare the veg plots. Cut autumn fruiting raspberries to the ground and cut the tips of summer fruiting ones. Raspberry canes can be planted now.

If you haven’t already done so prune apple and pear trees while they are dormant, stoned fruit (eg plums, cherries and apricots) are best left until summer. Prune soft fruit bushes (blackcurrants, gooseberries and redcurrants). Have a go at forcing rhubarb by placing an upturned bucket or bin over the emerging shoots. If we do have any snow keep it cleared off greenhouse roofs and avoid walking on the lawn if it is frosted as it damages the grass. Keep the bird feeders stocked up to attract these handy bug eaters. Clean old plant pots ready for the spring. Watch out for rot on any stored fruit, veg and dahlia tubers.

Most importantly, don’t forget Valentine’s Day on 14th February.

What might have appeared to be a rather morbid subject was in fact made highly entertaining by the speaker’s presentation – Sandra Moore came in the guise of one of the occupants of Belgrave Cemetery, Miss Elizabeth Goodwin (Oct. 1868 – Jan. 1922), who was a former head teacher at Belgrave National School (B.N.S.). Sandra’s/Elizabeth’s costume, her manner and diction certainly caught our imagination and woe betide any of us who did not pay attention! Elizabeth was born in Cropwell Bishop, Nottinghamshire, where her father was a head teacher. After her own appointment as head teacher at B.N.S. she devoted 26 year of her life to the school, before her death at the age of 53 years. The presentation began with a video film, giving us a tour of the cemetery to the accompaniment of the stirring hymn, “When

the Roll is Called up Yonder”! It was explained that, originally, all burials took place in churchyards, but during the Victorian era, with the increasing population and churchyards becoming full to capacity, there was an urgent need to provide land for municipal graveyards. Belgrave Cemetery was one of four provided for the citizens of Leicester. We learnt of a random selection of some of the cemetery occupants, who came from all walks of life. Their backgrounds and working lives varied considerably – some mundane, hardworking and ordinary, while others rose to prominence in the local community. Sometimes, they had moved from the place or county of their birth in order to find work and their lives were often influenced or overshadowed by events of the time in which they lived, such as the women’s suffrage movement, the Rechabite movement and the two World Wars. The style of a person’s funeral reflects their character and the life

they have led and this was evident for some of the people we heard about. One man designed his own memorial headstone and even supervised the digging and construction of his own grave – nine years before he actually needed it! In researching for this presentation, Sandra acknowledged the contribution of descendants of the people she included in her talk. She urged anyone with an interest in their family history to take the opportunity to speak to older family members about their lives and heritage and, above all, to make a written record and to include family photographs.

Jennifer Kennington Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 17th February: 7.30pm at the Harrison Room, All Saints’ Church. Speaker: Ernest Miller. Topic: “The Lin – A River through Time”. All welcome. Visitors: £3 per person.

It’s not often I get a phone call regarding a potential story that hooks me instantly, but this is a rare one that did! Deana Wildgoose, the manager for the Sir John Moore Foundation called me up before Christmas to see if I’d be interested in featuring an article showcasing the fantastic foundation and everything they have to offer, I’m sure you’ll agree it would have been a shame to let this article slip past!

Heart to heart; Leicestershire's Hidden Treasure Sir Christopher Wren in the 17th century designed a building in Leicestershire that is still in use today – where is it? Where can you go to school; attend film club; take part in an archaeological dig; perform at a band night and hold your wedding? The answer? Appleby Magna! In the heart of the Leicestershire countryside lies a magnificent building commissioned by Sir John Moore in 1697. Sir John was born in Appleby. He was a passionate supporter of emancipation through education and good health and he was the second son of the squire of Appleby. Sir John made his own way in the world, amassing a fortune by trading lead. He was Lord Mayor of London in 1681, and a Master of the Grocers Company. He was a dedicated philanthropist and his own financial success was shared for the benefit of his fellow citizens. He made substantial investments in his home village to better the heart mind and soul of “the gentlemen of all England”, by building the Sir John Moore School in Appleby and in Christ's Hospital in London; both commissions for his good friend Sir Christopher Wren. Sir John and Lady Moore did not have children and the building in Appleby was put into the care of a family led charitable foundation. Descendants of Sir John and Lady Moore have always served as

Trustees. The beating heart of Sir Johns legacy is as alive today, as it was in 1697. The Trustees now as in 1697 are accountable for ensuring the success of the building as an environment that inspires learning and is maintained in excellent order. In 2004 the Trustees secured £2million in grants and donations to restore the building for the next generation of children. The refurbishment of this Grade 1 listed building ensured all three floors were brought back into use. Stepping through the ironwork gates is a step into the 17th Century. You will find a 21st century Village School. 140 pupils are taking their first steps into an education that parents, the village and Ofsted love. The ground floor is dedicated to the village primary school, as well as the larger rooms on the second floor and the majority of the grounds, providing outdoor space to play and compete. In order to enable every child to realise their potential and take up citizenship the Trustees must to continue to look after the building. A museum showcasing Victorian education is on the top floor and two elegant flats for rent, one with a rooftop garden. The original stables are converted to create a vibrant space that houses the foundation office; the hub of the charity’s operations. Adjacent to the stables is a bijou Coffee Shop with stately outside

seating. In the cellars is a licenced bar and recording studio for hire. One three-story wing is let as office space for local businesses with their own separate access. Both the regular upkeep and planned maintenance works require investment. The small team of Foundation staff generate the income that helps to sustain this inspirational and aspirational place. A big part of this is sharing the space with families to hold significant events, parties, weddings and celebrations. Holding a wedding or a party at Sir John Moore is affordable and grand. This unique venue delivers bespoke packages at completive rates. The enjoyment of guests who fall in love with this place makes a huge contribution to maintaining the building and site. 2014 marked ten years of success from our 2004 restoration. One thing is for sure, if Sir John Moore were here today he would be pretty proud that his legacy continues today, as innovative as it was over 300 years ago, to support and inspire all of us. We need at least £20,000 a year simply to maintain the fabric of this historic building. If you are inspired by our story, you can help by sharing your celebration with us in this unique venue: simply contact the office on 01530 273629 or email deana.sirjohnmoore@gmail.com

After reading the article I have done some research of my own and discovered that there is much more the Foundation offers Leicestershire. This is merely a taster and it’s certainly wet my appetite! If you want to find out more about this amazing place go to www.sirjohnmoore.org.uk. We hope to bring you more on 21st century education at Sir John Moore and 21st century inspiration from internationally celebrated educationalists who are as inspired as I am by what's happening here
