NEXT ISSUE OUT Friday 31st January 2014 Advert Deadline: Thurs 23rd Jan
Film Presentations From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council At the end of the year, we watched Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations". The humble orphan Pip became a gentleman thanks to his unknown benefactor, revealed as the grimy convict, Magwitch, played admirably by Ralph Fiennes. The sets were extravagant, the costumes for each class of society in that period were certainly convincing. This was an entertaining film to see just before Christmas.
“Love is all You Need” will be shown on Friday January 10th and lasts 116 minutes. Bringing in the new year, our first film will be a life-affirming comedy set in an idyllic villa on the Sorrentine Peninsula. Ida, played by Trine Dyrholm and Philip, played by Pierce Brosnan, are offered a second chance at happiness when they least expect it. Tenderness and honesty overcome all complex problems in the end. This comedy is appealing to us all.
“The Great Gadsby” will be shown on Friday February 14th and lasts 143 minutes. The great novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald has been adapted into our great film, featuring Leonardo Di Caprio and Carey Mulligan. The multi-millionaire, Jay Gatsby, lives in an intoxicating world of the super rich. This is a story of impassive love, incorruptible dreams and dark tragedy. “Captain Philips” will be shown on Friday March 14th. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £4-50 and concessions are £4. The price includes refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets can be purchased via the parish office - 0116 236 7626 or at the door.
Anstey WI Anstey WI entered the Christmas tree competition at the Anstey Christmas gala. Their tree was entitled “White Inspiration, Inspiring Women,” and was festooned with papercraft ornaments mostly made at a craft day in November. Members were pleased with the response to their efforts. A few members attended the Bradgate Group’s carol service, hosted by Birstall and Wanlip. It was well organised and an altogether delightful event. In a hall full adorned with colourful Christmas decorations, they thoroughly enjoyed Ken Goddard’s introduction to classical music. Ken explained the different types of music, such as concerto, symphony and oratorio, clearly and simply. He illustrated his points using snatches of audio and video of familiar pieces, and finished with a mini last night of the proms, complete with appropriate audience participation. The evening was completed with a bring and share supper and festive tipple. All in all, we had a wonderful month.

JANUARY’S NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW New Year Security Tips Here are some useful tips to ensure that you don’t become a victim to an opportunist thief. • Photograph valuable property and log any serial numbers. Don’t store the information on a laptop, as that might be stolen too – keep it on a memory stick in a safe place. • Don’t put gift packaging out for recycling or leave it sticking out of your bin – thieves will notice boxes for branded products like laptops, TVs or accessories that could indicate an expensive piece of kit somewhere in the house. The safest thing to do is to break down packaging then store it out of sight inside your home until you can dispose of it at a local recycling site. • Mark any expensive gifts you receive for Christmas with a UV pen or property marking service. This will make it harder for burglars to sell the items and allow police to return them to you. I have got some Smart Water kits for a special price of just £15 until the end of January (normal price £20). Alternately you can register your property with www.immobolize.com I also have some more D-Locks for £5 to ensure your new bike is safe from thieves.
Christmas Gala Thank you to the Co-op for providing the items for the Hamper which was first prize in our recent Christmas raffle and to all the local businesses who also kindly donated prizes. Unfortunately I can’t name you all individually, but you have all received a Thank You card on behalf of Anstey NHW. Congratulations to Kay Calvert for winning the Hamper and hope you and your family enjoyed it. Thank you to Wendy Oxman for putting the hamper together. Special thanks to Wendy Parker, for all her help in acquiring the prizes from the local businesses. A full list of the winners can be found on our web site. www.GoAnstey.co.uk Thank you also to the Gala committee for all your hard work in organizing this event. Coordinator’s urgently required I was very disappointed that I haven’t received any offers to be a NHW coordinator for the following streets: • Ashfield Road • Burgin Road • Netherfield Road / Holgate Close • Hazelhead Road/Birkdale Close Please think about joining us, the role isn’t time consuming. It just helps in keeping people informed of any crime in their area, and to be a representative for their scheme.

These schemes need a NEW coordinator to enable them to be active once again. When a coordinator resigns, the NHW scheme then becomes invalid and NOT recognised as being part of NHW. All the hard work in setting up these schemes comes to nothing. The NHW scheme for Hazelhead Road & Birkdale Close has now been set up over a year, and we are still waiting for someone to be the coordinator. This scheme cannot be registered until we have a coordinator. One of my coordinators is helping out until we can find someone who lives in this area - the people who register the schemes have said that since he doesn’t live in the area, they will not register him as the coordinator. We also urgently need NHW coordinators in the Gorse Hill area in Anstey. Hope you all had a very safe and Happy Christmas, and wishing you all a very happy 2014. David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate. Proposed Development in Anstey & Thurcaston. I am grateful to all the residents who have made their views known about the large amount of proposed piecemeal development within the Parishes of Anstey and Thurcaston. Recently Anstey has seen a number of proposals for sites to be developed right across the Parish. In my view, there should not be any more large development in Anstey until there is clear evidence that there is a solution to the highway issues that exist. I believe, along with many residents who I have spoken to, that the capacity levels of vehicles travelling through the Nook area of Anstey have reached unacceptable levels, especially at peak times, remembering the amount of development that has taken place over the last few years within the village. We have now seen two applications refused by Charnwood Borough Council Planning Committee, one on Bradgate Road and more recently the proposal to erect 57 dwellings on land adjacent to Gynsill Court, Gynsill Lane Anstey. I was able to speak at the planning meeting on this application, where I pointed out and supported the County Council Highways who also recommended this application should be refused. I was concerned that this site was not in planning terms sustainable. This taking into account the walking distances to services and the nature of the routes including uncontrolled crossings off busy high speed roads. Therefore the site is not considered to offer practical walking alternatives to the car, noting there is only a two hourly bus service past the site.
In certain situations lights are left on, for example at potentially busier junctions, certain bends and where there is expected to be a reasonable amount of pedestrian activity. The County Council is working very closely with the Police and as part of this joint working there will be an annual review of each scheme that has been implemented. This scheme is contributing to both energy and carbon saving objectives. It is recognised that converting lights to part night operation may be unpopular with some residents, but the County Council are having to make tough choices on service provision to ensure that essential services continue to operate. Chainsaw Carving Launch Event. I attended the Chainsaw Carving Launch Event at Beacon Hill Country Park, where I unveiled one of the latest carvings created by chainsaw sculptor Peter Leadbeater. Leicestershire County Council formed a partnership with Peter in 2011. The four new sculptures add to the original seven, which are now firm favourites amongst park visitors. The new carvings mark a step in a new direction for sculptures, they still take inspiration from the park and its features, but demonstrate a more playful approach, one being a ewe and lamb carved from oak. I am confident that Peter's sculptures will add appeal to the park and encourage new visitors to enjoy its charm for years to come. I hope you will take a look sometime.
There are three more proposed large developments in the pipeline within Anstey, two along Cropston Road and another on Gynsill Lane. Again I will be working with residents to make sure the voice of local residents is heard. I believe there is a ground swell against more development without the necessary infrastructure. In my view, all this speculative piecemeal development is making a mockery of the Charnwood Borough Council's Core Strategy which is now going for inspection after being voted through the Council. Street Lighting. Since the part lighting scheme has been introduced in Anstey there have been several concerns raised about this scheme, although there has also been support for turning the street lights out during the quieter hours of the night. I believe I need to make sure residents understand how conversions have been made across the County. All street lighting has been subject to a risk assessment process which involves the County Council highway officers, accident investigation officers and Police, Fire and Ambulance services. Each individual lamp has been assessed against a range of criteria and where appropriate lamps have been turned off during the quieter hours of the night.

Charnwood Sports Awards. The Charnwood Sports Awards 2013 took place at Burleigh Court on December 2nd hosted by Ian Stringer from BBC Radio Leicester. The awards are organised by Charnwood Borough Council to celebrate the important role sport plays in our society, the outstanding achievements of local sportsmen and women and the invaluable contribution made by volunteers. I was pleased to be involved in presenting the awards, one going to Coach of the Year, Dawn Whitmore-Kirby who is based at the Wenlo Riding for the Disabled Stables in the Parish of
Woodhouse Eaves. Dawn has been a qualified senior instructor and coach for over 30 years and over the last year she has significantly increased the number of disabled riders to the sport.
Senior Sportsperson of the year went to James Dasaolu who has had an amazing year running the outdoor 100 metres in 9.91 seconds, the second fastest Briton of all time.
First World War Event. Being a member of the British Legion I was pleased to hear that the Anstey Branch are looking to organise an event to mark the hundred years since the start of the First World War. This is due to take place at the Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey on the weekend of 2nd and 3rd August 2014. If anyone has any memorabilia from that time or would like to know more about the event, please contact John Dowling on 0116 3193452 May I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year. If you need to contact me on any issues write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 0HH e-mail david.snartt@leics.gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804.

Counting the birds that are counting on you Big Garden Birdwatch 25th and 26th January 2014 It will be eyes to the skies on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th January 2014, as the nation takes part in the RSPB’s annual Big Garden Birdwatch. The activity is the biggest garden wildlife survey in the world and last year almost 600,000 people counted the birds in their garden. This year, participants will be hoping that further declines of garden favourites recorded last year have slowed down. Starlings hit an all-time low in the 2012 Birdwatch but their numbers then sunk by a further 16 per cent last year. Numbers of house sparrows, which are of high conservation concern, dropped by 17 per cent in gardens compared to 2012, whilst bullfinches and dunnocks fell by 20 per cent and 13 per cent respectively. These worrying declines mirror the findings of the State of Nature report which was launched earlier this year by 25 UK wildlife groups with the backing of Sir David Attenborough. The report revealed that 60 per cent of the wildlife species included are in decline, and one in ten of these could be the road to extinction in the UK unless something is done to save them. (See note 1). Big Garden Birdwatch, which has been running for 35 years, provides the RSPB with masses of information about changes in numbers of garden birds in winter, and helps to alert conservationists to significant declines in UK garden species like house sparrows and starlings. And this year, for the first time, participants are being asked to log some of the other wildlife they see in their gardens too. The RSPB wants to know whether people ever see deer, squirrels, badgers, hedgehogs frogs and toads in their gardens, to help build an
overall picture of how important our gardens are for giving all types of wildlife a home. The charity will gather useful information about these other species and share them with its conservation partners after the survey. Once the RSPB knows which species people are regularly seeing, it will also be able to tailor its advice on giving nature a home so that people can help their wild visitors nest, feed and breed effectively. Participants don’t have to count these other species over the Big Garden Birdwatch weekend, just tell the RSPB whether they have ever seen them in their gardens, at any time of year. To take part, people are asked to spend just one hour at any time of Big Garden Birdwatch weekend noting the highest number of each bird species seen in their gardens or local outside space at any one time. They then have three weeks to submit their results to the RSPB, either online at www.rspb.org.uk/ birdwatch or in the post. Richard Bashford, RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch Manager says: “Thousands of people have been giving nature a home in their gardens across the country and Big Garden Birdwatch is a great way to reaping the rewards by seeing what creatures are finding a refuge there over the winter. (See note 2).
“And these are birds that really count on us. At this time of year in particular they come to our gardens for help – with food, water and shelter. Millions of people around the UK help give them a home by providing these things and the Big Garden Birdwatch allows us to check what impact their help is having. “The situation has been dire for birds like starlings and sparrows over the last 30 years, but by knowing the exact situation, we can help to put things right.” Some birds have had better fortunes over the years. Sightings of popular species like blue tits, great tits and coal tits have increased since the survey begun in 1979. Goldfinches, which were absent from the Big Garden Birdwatch top 15 in the early years, have featured regularly as a top 15 species since 2004. From 16th December 2013 you can register to take part in Big Garden Birdwatch 2014 at www.rspb.org.uk/bird watch
“Every single person who takes part in the Big Garden Birdwatch is helping us learn about what is happening with our much-loved feathered friends.

M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hope you all had a joyous Christmas and let 2014 in happy spirits. My year ended with someone deciding to try and get inside my car by turning right before I had gone past, in Kirby Muxloe. This hasn’t done the front and rear drivers side doors any good at all, just something else to contend with. I am sure I could turn wine to water if I tried hard enough!!! Not been the happiest year for me and my Family has it? But as always I am optimistic that the New Year WILL bring forth better times.
Some of you are still getting in touch about the all-night street lights, or the lack of from Midnight to 5.30am every night. A reminder that If you are dissatisfied with your street being plunged into darkness then please get in touch with Clive Hodges at County Hall on direct line 0116 3057224 or email him (Copying me in) at clive.hodges@leics.gov.uk Some success has been achieved so it is certainly worth “Getting in touch.”

IT LEAVES LEICESTER AT 11PM AND GOES VIA BEAUMONT LEYS THEN THROUGH ANSTEY. Saves a Taxi Fare. Brmm! Brmm! NEWS FROM THE EU. ~~Deep-sea fishing~~ Proposals for a ban on deep sea trawling in the North East Atlantic were rejected in the European parliament recently. Scientists have warned that trawlers which scrape the bottom of the sea-bed do long term damage, taking decades to recover and that the amount of fish caught is very small. One of our MEPs Bill Newton-Dunn voted for the ban but pro-fishing MEPs from different countries including the UK combined to defeat it narrowly by 342 to 326. Makes you wonder what will happen if fish stocks dry up completely? I can hear the shouts of exclamation already. “Oh dear we never thought this would happen!” How does (and did) your MEP vote ? VoteWatch.eu is an independent website which contains a database of all European Parliament roll call votes since the 2009 elections. It also gives voting trends, and the EP’s calendar of future meetings. With the European elections approaching in May 2014, (No I didn’t know either!) another independent website has appeared unproven so far - called europedecides.eu.
SAVE ANSTEY. I am aware of Gareth Williams and friends campaign to stop any more housing within the village. We must be vigilant and try our best to stop unwanted new Greenfield development. It will become harder for developers to succeed when we have our new Core strategy local development plan in force but that won’t be until October 2014 so we must fight our own cause at the moment. It is a similar situation in other Charnwood villages with developers putting unwelcome schemes forward. We have managed to stop “For now at least” two new schemes within Anstey recently, through constructive objections. We must be equally vigilant on others that may come to a plans committee in the near future. HMMM! New yaers conundurm. Christmas Celebrations at Woolden Hill The Children in Key Stage 1 performed ‘The Most Disgruntled Snowman’ for parents and Grandparents. What a delight they were to watch. Key Stage 2 children went to St Mary’s Parish Church for their annual Carol Service. They were welcomed by the Reverend David McDonough and the church was packed to capacity. Santa was in attendance at the Woolden Hill Association Christmas Fair which raised over £600 for school funds. The newly formed School Choir run by a volunteer parent, were very busy singing at the opening of the Christmas Fair the Carol Service and at the Anstey Gala. Over 120 children enjoyed a Christmas lunch and they were joined by staff for this annual occasion. The children were all entertained by a travelling pantomime ‘George and the Dragon’ during the last week of term, finishing off what proved to be a very busy Autumn Term.

COMPUTER TIPS O WITH JOE COSTELL
In a series of tips for the less than expert computer users, Joe Costello, local retired ICT teacher, Engineer and self confessed Computer Geek, wishes to offer useful and practical advice in dealing with PCs and laptops. He is also offering, on a pro bono basis, more direct assistance to his Newtown Linford neighbours with help on repairs, installations, and software and hardware problems. You can contact Joe either by email at Newfordcomputerhelp@hotmail.co.uk or through this magazine.
Greetings If I had to choose just one tool for solving computer problems it would probably be the internet. Recently I needed to know how to get into an old lap top to make an upgrade. Within thirty seconds of going on line I was watching a video of a guy in Iowa disassembling the very model. Truly the internet is a land of Angels and Demons; the trick is to spot the difference. If you have a problem and are attracted to the idea of tackling it yourself try the following. Type into Google the key words of your problem, “Can’t open such n’ such”; “Computer crashes when I…..”. Or, if you get an error message, like, “Failed due to error, Error Code X.0000x0” then cut and paste the whole thing. Ignore encyclopedia and dictionaries and look for Forums. Check carefully the name of any website you are going to visit. Anything that implies improving your PC, avoid. Anything containing the words “Fix computer problems.” Or “Download repair tool.” avoid as they will do neither. I would suggest you do not register even with the good guys; just look for an entry by someone who has had the same problem as you, and read the solution. Only once has this form of diagnosis failed me. As a rule of thumb you will know you are in the right sort of forum if the vocabulary is a bit… er.. choice. In the right forums you will find real people venting their frustration and using colourful language. Of course this is of little use if you can’t get onto the internet. Then you

would have to find a friend with internet access and take a pen and paper, failing that contact me. On a completely separate matter. If you are considering purchasing a new PC or Laptop it may be wise to hold off for a while. The people (the Intel corporation) who make the computer chips (CPUs) have just brought out their latest range called Haswell (or fourth generation i7 CPUs). Intel have clearly focused their research and development into making their best chips available for use in laptops. So the improvements have been in: power consumption, important for laptop battery life but much less important for PCs; and graphics, the amount of the chips specifically designed to process picture and video information, again important for laptops but largely irrelevant to PCs, as PCs have the space for other special bits called Graphics or Video cards to deal with such information. The reason I advise waiting is that the improvements in the 4th generation chips is small compared to improvements expected in the next generation, 12 to 18 months away. Power reduction from around 80watts to 1020 watts and a thickness (that largely determines speed) reduced from 22nm to 14nm. These are truly dramatic improvements for which it is worth waiting. Intel’s intentions to make their chips suitable for laptops, make it almost certain that Desktop and Tower PCs will become a thing of the past over the next ten years. Serious gamers will use other platforms such as Xbox and PSP, and laptops will by then be able to perform all other functions.
Cheers Joe Costello
The Hidden Side of CCTV NEW figures released by Charnwood Borough Council reveal how CCTV is helping in the fight against crime and keeping residents safe. Within the last five years the Council’s CCTV team has dealt with 140,000 incidents with the 184 cameras positioned across the Borough. Since 2008 the CCTV system within Charnwood has been used to support 4,956 Police prosecutions and supporting with 2,526 arrests. During the same period of time the team has also been involved with looking for more than 600 missing people and answered 7,866 out-of-hours calls to the Council offices. Councillor David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “Our CCTV team deals with a variety of incidents, 24 hours a day and these figures provide an insight into the invaluable work they carry out.” The Council’s car parks are monitored throughout the day and night by CCTV. Out-of-hours visitors experiencing difficulties will be assisted by the CCTV team and in the last five years 1,091 car park matters have been dealt with by the service. One of the key priorities for the CCTV team is to protect residents and visitors to the Borough. It is the first port of call during floods and, since opening, has responded to 68 flood alerts. Cameras are also relied on in the run-up to, and during, major events. They were successfully used during the Olympic Torch relay in 2012 and each year are key to ensuring the safety of the public and traders at Loughborough Fair. For more information on the Council’s CCTV services visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/cctv, call 01509 632562 or email: john.hatfield@charnwood.gov.uk.

FILMREVIEW Last Vegas - 12A Last Vegas is a laugh-out-loud take on The Hangover with a genius 60+ cast and the director of the cult classic Cool Runnings. Billy (Michael Douglas) is finally getting married to a much younger woman and wants to celebrate his stag night in Vegas with his childhood friends. Putting their gripes with each other behind them, they head out to recapture their mis-spent youth, but Vegas is a very different place now. Can they step up and do Sin City justice with medication to remember and early bed-times to observe? Last Vegas is warm, touching and, most of all, very funny.
Twelve Years A Slave - 15 TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE is based on an incredible true story of one man's fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender), as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon's chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) will forever alter his life.

ANSTEY GALA & CHRISTMAS GALA
Anstey Gala Committee would like to thank all involved and those who attended this year’s Christmas Gala on Saturday 7th Dec. We were very lucky with the weather and ran a hog roast outside the Jubilee Hall. The committee also provided refreshments in the Jubilee hall, ran a raffle and children could visit Santa in his lovely grotto. More craft stalls and refreshments were located in the various churches. Local school choirs entertained the crowds in two of the churches and this year we had a ladies choir from Woodhouse Eaves instead of a brass band this time. The afternoon concluded in the Nook, with carol singing led by the ladies choir, then at 5.30pm all the Christmas lights were switched on by Santa! Well done to Caroline & Claire’s Preschool, who won the Christmas tree competition held in the Methodist church this year. Voting was done with pennies and the winners received an amazing £30.20. The rest of the voting amounted to£131.25, which will be donated to charity. The new committee will decide upon a suitable cause at their first meeting in January. The Christmas Gala only makes a modest profit, as it's primary aim is to celebrate the Christmas season & lights 'switch on' as a village community. It has been agreed that this year's £500 profit is to be donated to the "Anstey Town Charity".
Anstey Gala Day - date for 2014 - and AGM report. Please make a note the summer gala will be on Saturday 6th of September 2014! The AGM took place in December and a new committee formed to organise the next gala. The Summer Gala has been in a transitional period, with a considerable change in committee members. The £1468.64 profit from the September Gala is divided into shares earned by members of the Gala committee, for a) attendance at meetings, b) helping all day, on gala day, c) offices held. Cheques were presented at the public AGM and they are made payable to the local groups, organisations and charities nominated by members. Again thanks all those who supported the 2013 Summer & Christmas Galas. In particular, we want to thank the following businesses for their regular support –Bosworth Wright, Ulverscroft Large Print Books, Eleet Travel and Alan Keith Hairdressers. Britvic (Wincanton). We also acknowledge Anstey Parish Council, Anstey Town Charity and all three churches for their ongoing support. Thanks also go to the many local traders who regularly donate raffle prizes.
The committee will start planning the next gala in January. We meet on the first Monday of the month at 7.30pm. Do you belong to a local group or sports club? Could you represent them and earn some money Please CLEA CARPETfor & them? UPHOLSTERY consider joining us. New members are most welcome. Don't worry, the main posts are already appointed for the coming year! Please contact us at ansteygala@aol.co.uk or ask at the Jubilee Hall.

Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society For our last meeting in 2013 on Tuesday 19th November, proceedings began with the A.G.M. Apologies were received and the minutes of the 2012 A.G.M. perused – there were no matters arising. All customary reports were delivered and accepted – the annual subscriptions for 2014 will remain at £12 per person and entrance fees for visitors at £3 per person, per meeting. Once again, the committee was depleted by three retirements, including the Chairman, Colin Revell, who had served for four years in that role, as well as having been a committee member prior to that. Thanks were extended to the retirees, as well as to the three remaining committee members, and a presentation was made to Colin in appreciation of his term of office. Brenda Hooper was welcomed back, returning to serve on the committee for a further year, but a plea was made to recruit at least one more person to make the committee more viable. It was sad to hear of the recent death of Dorothy Budd who had been a long-time, loyal and enthusiastic Society member – she will be greatly missed. The A.G.M. closed at 8pm. Our speaker for the evening was Colin Hyde who came to give an interesting presentation on the East Midlands Oral History Archive. This organisation was established to record living history through the spoken word, and this year marked the 30th anniversary since oral history recording began in Leicester.
The ability to make fully comprehensible oral recordings only dates from the end of World War 2, although earlier recordings do exist. Colin played two early examples, one from 1890 (obtained from the British Library) was a very crackly recording of the voice of Florence Nightingale and the second example, dating from the 1920’s, was the voice of the only ship’s officer to survive the sinking of the Titanic in which he gave his personal recollections of that disastrous event. One man instrumental in establishing oral history recording in England was George Ewart Evans who began recordings about country traditions and laid the foundations for the development of the Oral History Society. With the growing enthusiasm for recording the spoken voice, by the 1950’s, tape recording clubs both for adults and children had been set up in the East Midlands, including in Leicester, Derby and Nottingham. The advent of local radio helped to boost the production of quality recordings and Radio Leicester began in 1967. Early recordings were done on reel-to-reel tapes, but with ever-changing technology there followed the production of cassette tapes, mini discs and digital CD’s and DVD’s. Fortunately, after the birth of digital technology, old tape recordings were still retained, but an ever-present problem is in their preservation and trying to prevent their deterioration. Since its establishment, funding of the Oral History Archive has been variable,
but currently the Heritage Lottery is a major source of support. Colin has many recorded examples of local people sharing their memories of particular events during their lifetime, such as in the 1980’s, a gentleman relating his family’s recollections concerning the final illness and death of Queen Victoria. Two other examples were of a Leicester tram driver talking about his working day and a hosiery worker from Hinckley explaining his role in the workplace. Colin pointed out that these, and similar recordings, are also a great way to preserve evidence of local accents and dialects. Colin emphasised that it is important to produce authentic and verifiable recordings, as well as them being of good quality. People need to be willing and able to talk and it is necessary to allow time for them to do so – not everyone can be instantly concise in what they want to say. Colin’s mantra in preserving the Oral History Archive for future generations is “lots of copies, keeps stuff safe”. Jennifer Kennington Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 21st January 2014 when Trevor Parr will be making a return visit, this time to talk about the Civil War in Leicestershire. Time: 7.30pm. Venue: the Harrison Room, All Saints’ Church, Thurcaston. Annual subscriptions will be due and the full 2014 programme will be available.
Local Groups and Charities Don't Miss out Anstey Town Charity is calling on local groups and charities to remember that the 31st of January is closing date for applications. Last year eleven applicants received grants from £100 to £400 totalling £3,000. Posters on village notice boards and in the November edition of 'The Local' give details of what is required from applicants. Further information can be had from the Secretary, Ken Schofield on 0116 220 7552.The Trustees meet in early April and applicants will be informed shortly afterwards. The Charity relies on local groups and individuals for funds which can be invested with the Charities Official Investment Fund. All income received from its investments must be given out as grants. If your group or charity has benefitted with a grant perhaps you could make a donation, raise funds or leave a legacy and so help the Trustees to make larger or more grants.

POLICEMATTERS Welcome to this months Police Matters from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. As this edition lands on your door step we will either be in, or very close to 2014, so we would like to wish you all a very happy and crime free New Year. The published crime figures show all crimes in Anstey from 19th November to 18th December 2013. The figures show a rise in both burglary other than dwellings (sheds, garages, businesses, outbuilding etc), and also theft from motor vehicle. The theft from motor vehicle has highlighted a concerning trend of fuel theft, with 5 of the recorded thefts being as a result of petrol tanks being drilled to release fuel. The Police are carrying out a number of operations, both overt and covert, in an attempt to either catch those responsible or deter these crimes. We would ask all residents to be aware of this type of theft and call Police on 999 if any suspicious activity is seen around parked vehicles. With regard to protecting outbuildings and garages, the simplest form of crime prevention is the installation of good security lighting around properties and gardens, so the area is flooded with light if anybody does decide to pay the area some attention. New Years Resolution?? Why not make yours to become a member of Neighbourhood Watch? Better still, why not become a co-ordinator for your road? Whilst we have great Neighbourhood Watch coverage in Anstey already, let’s set out to reach 100% coverage in Anstey by the end of 2014. If you wish to know who your Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator is, or want to set up Neighbourhood Watch on your road, please contact our NHW Beat Manager – Diane Tillotson. Diane’s contact details can be found in her own NHW article in this magazine.

Ever had a question about Policing or The Law, and didn’t really know where to go to get an answer. Well why not try the ‘Ask the Police’ website. The site holds answers to around 750 questions, on the subject of things such as stray dogs and noisy neighbours that the police are most frequently asked about by the public through their 101 or 999 contact numbers. The website is part of a national initiative that will assist the public to find solutions to everyday problems that can affect the quality of their lives. The service is an easy-to-navigate website - www.askthe.police.uk - that can be tailored to Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and offers a range of answers and useful contacts. It is also available to download as an App. You can even customise the answers to where you actually live – give it a try. For any ‘Tweeters’ out there, why not also follow Leicestershire Police - @leicspolice – where you can keep updated on various police operations and events across the force. Followers at the moment can get regular updates on Operation Tiger that is targeting criminals in your area, and is aimed at reducing crime and anti-social behaviour in the community. As always we would ask you to call CRIMESTOPPERS if you have any information at all about any crime. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. Healthy New Year! Let’s increase our fitness in 2014. Being active helps to prevent and improve many common medical conditions. Obesity, osteoarthritis, brittle bones, back pain, depression, cancer, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stress can all be helped by exercise. Not only does it improve your shape, posture and confidence, general exercise releases endorphins - making you feel good!
I’m not normally very active... where do I start? It might surprise you, but doing simple daily activities and household tasks can count as being active! Doing the hoovering, a bit of gardening, and even using the stairs, are all forms of exercise. But there are more effective things you can do to improve your fitness, without leaving the house.
But I’m too busy! Adding in a few exercises to your daily routine can really make a difference – side leg lifts whilst brushing your teeth in the morning, 10 gentle squats when you’re waiting for the kettle to boil, or even bicep curls with a bottle of water during the advert break! And they won’t take any time out of your day.
Exercise is too expensive! Making changes to your routine can be all the more beneficial for your health and fitness. They don’t have to be anything too out of the ordinary to take effect, and they don’t have to cost you any money! Such as getting off the bus one or two stops early and walking the rest of the way (make sure you leave yourself
enough time if you have a tight schedule!), or parking a 10 minute walk away from your destination is also a brilliant, easy way to get 20 minutes exercise. This could be when picking your children up from school – exercise for them too! Eventually, if the distance isn’t too far, you could ditch the car or bus altogether – by choosing to walk or cycle. These alternatives not only benefit your health, and the planet, but your pocket as well saving you money.
Too sweaty? Remember to keep a spare change of clothes in your car and at work, you probably don’t want to spend the rest of the day in your exercise gear.
Too tired? When you’re tired, I know that exercise is at the bottom of everybody’s list - under the assumption that it will make you feel more worn out. However, research has shown that low-intensity exercise actually reduces fatigue and boosts energy levels, and the chances are you will sleep better at night and awaken feeling more refreshed!
Getting started Firstly, find yourself some comfortable clothes that you can move around in, and you should wear sensible shoes with cushioned soles to provide shock absorbency. If you want to increase your fitness, try accelerating the pace gradually each day, until you find yourself slightly out of breath, this shows that your body is exercising! An easy way to measure that you are maintaining progress in a safe, healthy way, is to aim for your breathing rate to increase to a point at which you could still hold a conversation – exercising with a friend is great way to test this out, and more fun too! Try to start with 10
In pain ? we can help Leicester Sports Medicine Clinic
Make sure you have a realistic plan, and that exercise is one of the major things that must be achieved each day - an important part of your daily routine, don’t let it slip your mind. And, enjoy feeling fitter!
