Anstey Parish Councillors Wanted

As well as the General Election on the 7th of May, there are also elections for Anstey Parish Council on the same day – and in order to ensure that we have an election, we have to have 15 or more candidates. Anstey Parish Council looks after most of the open spaces in the village. It works alongside many village organisations, such as the Gala Committee, the local Scout Group, the Anstey Swifts and many more. We run the Jubilee Hall on the Recreation Ground, which is well-used and can be booked for parties or events.

Specialists in Rattan, Cane, Wicker, Kubuu & Seagrass

The Council has 14 Councillors on it. It meets every 3 weeks throughout the year, so being a member is no great burden. It has an annual turnover of over £200,000 and a staff of 8, some full-time and some part-time.

So if you want to forget about austerity and national politics, and you want to play a part in helping to provide local services for local people, then get yourself nominated as a candidate.

Finance Options Available FREEPHONE 0800 6127 401

You can get a nomination form from the Returning Officer at Charnwood Borough Council. I’m sure that there will be a link on their website, but I can’t find it as yet. You need to be nominated by 2 local residents and make sure that the form is hand delivered to Charnwood Borough Council between the 30th March and the 9th April. I would also encourage everyone to make sure that they’re on the Electoral Register so that you can vote. You’ll need to do this by 20th April; (for all of the 3 elections to be held on the 7th of May).

The team is developing other innovative ways of supporting teens including video-chat clinics and web-forums hosted by nurses – and ChatHealth is now piloting in special schools, increasing support for young people with additional needs. It follows the launch of a trailblazing website for children www.healthforkids.co.uk launched by the Trust early in the year.

The text helpline for 11-19s is a finalist project in two categories of the Patient Experience Network national awards - “Communicating Effectively with Patients and Families” and “Innovative Use of Technology/Social Media.”

The pioneering service, which has been codesigned by young people themselves, gives 65,000 young people quicker access to NHS care if they send enquiries from smartphones and mobile devices. Teenagers can ask for help about a range of issues. Nurses say more new students now make contact including more teenage boys who are usually less likely than girls to approach a healthcare professional and talk about their problems.

Judges from the Patient Experience Network said, “It is extremely encouraging to learn about national initiatives which demonstrate a real commitment to ensuring that the voice of the patient is continually being sought through a variety of different and innovative approaches.” The awards are the first of their kind in the UK and celebrate healthcare staff who are developing best practice around improving patient experiences.

“The teenage years can be a difficult time and we launched the service in 2013 because some young people say they are more likely to ask for support if they’ve got choices about how to get in touch” says Maggie Clarke, Senior Nurse Professional Lead for School Nursing at Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust. “We continue to offer weekly clinics in schools, for young people who prefer seeing a nurse in person. But the option of sending a text is available all the time. It’s about improving access to help for young people.”

Winners will be announced at the national awards finals and conference in Birmingham on 11 March 2015. The school nursing service is jointly funded by the city and county councils. “If we engage with young people in more innovative ways they’re more likely to take an interest in their own wellbeing,” says Ernie White, cabinet member for public health at Leicestershire County Council. “If we get healthy dialogue going with young people at an early stage, we’ll help them stay well for much longer as they grow older.”

To Thank Leicestershires Unsung Heros The Chairman of the Leicestershire County Council, Mr Bill Boulter hosted a dinner to thank the Unsung Heroes of Leicestershire for giving up their time and talents to help others. As Mayor of Charnwood I was asked to nominated three worthy volunteers and each were invited, together with a guest, to the dinner. My nominations were John Dowling from our own village of Anstey who has worked for a long period of time as Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator. He also works alongside the British Legion raising money at local events and helps organise Remembrance Sunday in the village. My other two nominations were Jan Sutton who is Deacon in the Loughborough Methodist Circuit. Jan has worked tirelessly as a Street Pastor in Loughborogh going out on Friday and Saturday nights through into the early hours of the morning. Jan’s vision has facilitated the training and induction of 26 Street Pastors to date. The other nomination was Ken Carson who joined the British Legion in1987 and has been the Remembrance Sunday Parade organiser in Loughborough for sixteen years. With his guidance, dedication and attention to detail the parade has grown to become one of the largest in the Midlands. Pauline and I had a really nice evening with our Unsung Heros. Thank you all for your tireless involvement in the community, you truly are UNSUNG HEROS. John, Jan and Ken all received a glass paperweight to commemorate the event.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not

just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate.

The Green Plaque Award Scheme. You may recall I encouraged residents to put forward names of people and places to be commemorated in the second round of the Leicestershire Green Plaque Awards. I was delighted to see the name of Charles Bennion on the shortlist of twelve nominations. He was the entrepreneur and philanthropist who gave Bradgate Park to the people of Leicester and Leicestershire for their quiet enjoyment. Residents will now be able to vote for up to six of their favourite people and places. The six with the most votes will be awarded a Leicestershire County Council Green Plaque. For a full list and to vote by Monday 6th April visit www.leics.gov.uk/greenplaques or pick up and drop off a voting form at any county library or post a completed form to Green Plaques, Communities & Wellbeing, Room 500, County Hall, Glenfield. LE3 8RA.

Bridleway K57 Woodhouse Eaves Further to the information I supplied last month. I have now received a decision from the Inspector about whether the Bridleway should be allowed to be diverted adjacent to Pocket Gate Cottage, Woodhouse Eaves. The Inspector did not confirm the Order to allow this to happen. I am grateful to all the residents and organisations that objected to this diversion. Especially the Bridleways Association, who, in my view, carried out a detailed survey of both routes and submitted measurements which cast doubt that a three metre wide sustainable surfaced path could be achieved if the Bridleway was diverted. I am of the opinion the Inspector shared the serious concerns about the potential risks of a pinch point where there is a steep drop into the brook. I know many residents who use this Bridleway had great concerns about safety, therefore I am pleased this order was not confirmed.

Charnwood Core Strategy Charnwood Borough Council's Core Strategy has passed a significant milestone. Planning Inspector Kevin Ward has written to the Council to say the Core Strategy, which outlines the Council's vision of where future development should take place in the Borough, can move forward. Mr Ward who has been examining the Strategy, says in his letter that the Core Strategy is unsound but can be made sound with some modifications. Stating "whilst I have concluded that the

submitted Core Strategy is not sound in a number of respects, I consider that it can be made sound through main modifications". I understand these modifications will be subject to a sustainability appraisal and full public consultation for a period of at least six weeks. Mr Ward will then consider the comments received during the consultation before finalising his report. For more details about the Charnwood Core Strategy, please visit www.localplan.charnwood.gov.uk I am pleased that the Strategy is moving forward, as I believe it will be helpful to stop the unwanted piecemeal development that has been taking place recently. I have written to officers at Charnwood Borough Council to ask what effect this will have on planning applications coming forward outside the development areas of the Strategy, especially the piecemeal developments we have seen in my Division.

Thurcaston Planning Application I was pleased to receive the information about the planning application for up to 50 dwellings off Mill Road, Thurcaston was refused by a planning committee at Charnwood Borough Council. I supported the officer recommendations for refusal, especially as this proposed application would be unsustainable development in this location. The report going on to say "the detrimental impacts of the proposal are significant" I also suggested that this refusal was, in my view, supported by a recent appeal decision in Ashby where the Inspector dismissed the appeal making reference to placing undue reliance on car use. I also raised the issue about this development having an adverse impact on flooding and a need for a consistent approach with previous decisions made across the Borough.

Register to Vote Thousands of letters have been sent out to residents in Charnwood reminding them to make sure they are registered to vote. As well as May 7th being the General Election, there are also elections for Charnwood Borough Council and Parish Councils. The letters have been sent to households to check the Council is aware of all eligible voters at each address. Anyone aged 16and 17 can also register to vote so that as soon as they turn 18 they will be put on the electoral register. The last day to register for this years elections is April 20th. For more information about registering to vote please visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/yourvotematters

Recycling in Charnwood Residents in Charnwood are being encouraged to help the recycling effort by not using black bin bags in their green recycling bins. Charnwood Borough Council's collection crews need to be able to see the recyclable materials in the bins to ensure that they are only items that can be recycled. If recyclable materials are placed in black bin bags the crews cannot check items and unfortunately will not be able to take the contents of the bin away. If people are struggling to fit all their recycling in the green bins, they can order an additional bin free of charge, please e-mail cleaner.greener@charnwood.gov.uk or telephone 01509 634563. The Council thanks residents for helping with the recycling effort which has now reached a recycling rate across the Borough of around 50% Please let me know if you need any more details about recycling and if you have any concerns with the latest information.

Gardens Wanted Thurcaston and Cropston Open Garden Weekend 27 and 28th June 2015;

2pm to 6 pm;

In aid of LOROS

We are inviting gardeners to join up for this year’s Thurcaston and Cropston Open Garden Weekend. Last year we raised £1400 for LOROS and we are hoping for an even more successful event this summer. Perhaps you have opened your garden every year so far, maybe you have once or twice; or maybe you are plucking up the courage to do so for the first time. Come and be part of this popular annual event for local residents of our villages and those visitors from further afield.

We welcome gardens of all shapes and sizes; big or small; simple or elaborate; immaculate or with a more ‘natural’ look, and even those that are a ‘work in progress’. People who have opened their gardens in previous years have very positive things to say about the experience, which is why they come back year after year.

Gardens in both villages are open on two afternoons, but if you can only manage one afternoon, then that’s fine. So if you would like to open your garden for this year’s event or would like more information (or encouragement) please contact us. We hope you will join us for another successful year as part of the Thurcaston and Cropston Open Gardens event. Please contact Linda 0116 236 3872, or email linda@tcog.org.uk Look at our website for more information, inspiration and encouragement (which now has answers to some frequently asked questions) www.tcog.org.uk We look forward to hearing from you.

POLICEMATTERS

Crime Figures 19th Jan 2015 to 18th Feb 2015

Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 19 January 2015 and 18 February 2015 inclusive.

Burglary Dwelling – 3 Edward Street, Link Road, Dale Close

The crime figures show further thefts from vehicles this period. Unfortunately, Anstey has suffered along with many other villages, both local and county wide, with breaks to work vehicles and other vans. During some of the breaks, a Red Transit van has been seen in the area and this van is quite distinctive. The van has what can only be described as a very poor red paint job and has a single orange light on the roof at the rear. The first digits of the number plate are ‘L177’. If this van is seen in the area, then please call Police on 101 to report its location and activity. If you feel a crime is in progress then call 999 immediately. Do not approach either the van or its occupants.

Burglary - 5 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage, Etc) - Link Road x 2, Martin High School, Hazlehead Road, Forest Gate

Anti-Social Behaviour Sadly, I have to report that the village is suffering from an increased rise in anti-social behaviour. This is in the form of general vandalism and nuisance behaviour, which is causing distress and alarm to the local community. A lot of this behaviour is centred around the Nook area (including car park and adjoining streets) and involves a small group of youth’s intent on causing nuisance. The behaviour has involved damage to fences and other property, in particular along the alleyway between the Nook car park and Albion Street. Unfortunately, we can no longer use the excuse that the problem is being caused by youths entering the village from elsewhere as the names that have been passed to me are youths from the village. Residents/Parents should be aware that we are working closely now with the Charnwood Borough Council Anti-Social Behaviour team and also the IMPACT/PREVENTION teams from the County Council Youth Offending service. Over the last week, we have had IMPACT youth workers out on the streets engaging with the local youth and this intervention will continue over the coming weeks. I have already forwarded some names to the Youth Offending Service, and any further person(s) coming to Police attention in this regard will also be put forward to this service. The Youth Offending service will work with the youth and their parents in an attempt to curtail their behaviour before it escalates along the criminal line, and ultimately prosecution and Police record. The behaviour by some of the youth in the village must stop; it is giving the majority of the well behaved young people from the village a bad name and is causing great distress to residents in their own community. If anybody has information about those individuals causing the Anti-Social Behaviour then please speak with me when I am out and about in the village. Police patrols have been stepped up in the areas causing most concern.

Anstey W.I. The smells and sounds of Italy invaded Jubilee Hall, Anstey at this month's meeting. Jane Andrew from Illston on the Hill W.I. came in order to give us a demonstration of Italian cooking. What a treat. With the strains of Italian opera in the background and the table laden with wonderfully aromatic ingredients Jane proceeded to show us how to use a table top pasta machine by rolling the pasta into very thin layers and then by adjusting an attachment the pasta could then be cut into spaghetti or pasta strips. Not only were we entranced by this machine but because it had a handle that had to be turned, reminded us of the mangles of old. We were given the recipes for making fresh pasta and basic Italian tomato sauce both of which Jane demonstrated to us along with the recipe for Tiramisu. Whilst making a fresh Tiramisu dessert we were given a quiz about Italy and the winners received Italian ingredients as prizes such as a bottle of wine, ground coffee. Our guest, Yvonne Butterworth from Birstall received pasta flour as a prize. Everything that Jane made went to someone as a prize but the 'icing on the cake' or the 'cocoa powder on the dessert' was that the Tiramisu was ready for all of us to taste, so armed with spoons, diets out the window, we attacked this wonderful dessert. Between the wonderful opera, wonderful smells, wonderful sights and wonderful tastings, the evening was a great success.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Almost Spring again and hopefully a bit of warmer weather. Just 2 months now before the most eagerly awaited General Election for many years. What the outcome will be I don’t know. I have been round Anstey and most people I have spoken to are of the same opinion. Thursday May 7th. (As if you didn’t know) is when the decisions on who will be our next MP in the general election and local Charnwood Borough and Parish Council representatives, will be in your X or X’s. I hope to be standing again for both Charnwood Borough and Anstey Parish Councils. If you feel you can’t make it to vote in person for any reason on the day you can of course request a postal vote form by ringing Charnwood Borough Council 01509 634612.

Lights not Working? (Read on). You may remember some time ago I gave you information on how you can phone the County Council to report street lights out in the villages, (before the witching hour!) I recently toured round parts of Anstey in my car and discovered 6 lights that were not working, one on Highfield Street for the third time. I don’t mind doing this occasionally, but if you want to help keep us illuminated at night, up until midnight, then please ring County Highways 0116 3050001. We currently have over 600 lights in Anstey village, so I am bound to miss a few? If you don’t want to call the County Council then email me or phone telling me the street/road the light is off and the number which should be on the stanchion, and I’ll report it for you.

NEW Allotments/Play Area/ Cemetery extn!!! I recently had a meeting with project manager, Tim Platts at the Davidson’s development off Groby Road, Anstey. I asked how things were progressing. I can report that the new children’s play area on the site should be ready late March early April time. Whilst the New allotments promised opposite the development along with the extension to our cemetery should be ready by midSummer 2015. ☺

band Buttercup Jelly, back in the mid-sixties; on TV’s Pointless recently. Better still that he ended up winning the £2,750 jackpot with Dave Hill of Slade. “Lionel” looked remarkably tall unless Dave Hill is very small and that big hat he used to wear on stage was deceiving? Dave’s chosen charity was Silver Star (Diabetics.) While Mr Hill gave his share to the Lord’s Taverners, to help kids with special needs. The celebrity pair fought off competition from Carol Decker (T’Pau) & Limahl (Kajagoogoo) whom they beat in the head to head. The other two teams were Mark King (Level 42) and singer Toyah Wilcox, Anthony Costa (Blue vocalist) and 5ives Scott Robinson. Over 40million records have been sold by the 4 teams over 5 decades. I wonder how many I’ve sold. Showaddywaddy who are still performing have had 23 top twenty hits since 1973. The pair’s pointless question was: Name an England cricketer who played in the 2013 “Ashes Series” against the “Aussies” in Australia? The winning answer was??? (Let me know.)

there aren’t that many Lib. Dems’ left but if you can lend a hand it would be much appreciated. I seriously thought about disengaging from a political party, to be independent, but you get more recognition with policies and having a say at Charnwood Borough Council if you are a member of a political party. At the end of the day I am “first and foremost” John Sutherington of Anstey. Still young at heart! At 66 on May 8th. 2015. It’s not “Spit for Sutty” this time, its vote for Sutherington.

London Marathon 2015. Reminder that my nephew Ryan Sutherington will be running in this year’s London Marathon on Sunday 26th. April, and wants to raise £1,500 for “Children with Cancer”. If you can donate please go to:uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ryansutherington He is also involved along with Mark Schulz and ex LCFC legend Matt Piper (Who scored the last goal at Filbert Street) with organising a charity football match at Anstey Nomads FC on Sunday March 22nd. See posters for more details. Mark Schulz and Heather Vaughan are also running the London Marathon. Their charities are the NSPCC and Anthony Nolan respectively.

New Sign? Yes. By the time you read this it’ll be old news but I do hope you all like the new sign depicting Bradgate Park’s Old John, as you are coming into Anstey village at the top of Anstey Lane. I requested it on the Monday and it was erected four days later. Good result? ☺☺

Election 2015. As I am not 100% fit yet, if anyone would like to help deliver election leaflets, even if it’s just your street please let me know. I know that

We have a good number of new people in the village and for those who didn’t know or even just forgot, we have a number of village coffee mornings: Every Saturday 9.30am t0 11.30am. At the Methodist Church in the Nook. Just 60p a cup + Biscuits. Good value. There are also homemade jams, cards, books, & good conversation. Friday mornings at St. Mary’s Church rooms on Church Lane. From 9.30am. FIRST Saturday in the month 10am to Noon. At the United Reformed Church, Bradgate Road. Coffee & Biscuits. Again just 60p. There are also Knick-knacks, raffle, jams & cakes.

hopefully all will be sorted. (It had better!) It will be a bit chaotic parking for a week round the nook area, but we will see a big improvement. Locals could walk into the village as part of your daily exercise or use the Free Co-op car park, whilst Anstey’s many visitors may have to whistle a bit at times… Sorry.

Protected Trees? Over the last couple of years some people have been a bit naughty in cutting down trees they really ought not to have done. To prevent this happening even more CBC have put TPO’s on a number of trees mainly Oak, between 229 & 249 Bradgate Road, Anstey. If you think trees near you are worth saving please ring me. We need to keep them.

Wembley… nearly there… Local footballer, winger, Wes York (21) from Anstey, who started his career with Anstey Swifts then the Nomads, before moving to Nuneaton and now Wrexham FC. Is just one win away in the FA Trophy from an appearance at Wembley Stadium. Young Wesley was transferred to the Vanarama Conference side in June 2014. He has made over 30 appearances and scored 4 goals. I will update you in the next issue. They have to beat Torquay Utd. in the Semi-finals.

Mitchells Field. Some people are concerned as to what’s happening there with all the heavy machinery? Well it’s only a temporary compound for STWA work on Charles Drive and Cropston Road. Let’s not worry. There is no scheme for a building. But we hope to be seeing junior sport on the field by next season, if we have a following wind. The compound will eventually be hard surfaced to be used for parking, making it a little easier on Cropston Road, at play time.

And Finally. As well as the usual channels I am now on “Facebook” Because of PURDAH this may be my last politically minded column till after the forthcoming elections…

Nook Car Park. After much campaigning over the last couple of years, CBC owned car park off Stadon Road, Anstey finally be improved over the week beginning March 9th. (Weather permitting) There is concern over making a designated route into the Doctors, but

Thank-you. ☺… Yours Sincerely Cllr. John J. Sutherington. Anstey.

Snibston’s proposed closure date announced IT IS PROPOSED that Snibston will close to visitors on Friday, July 31st. Richard Blunt, cabinet member for museums, said: “I’m proposing that the museum, in its current form, will close on July 31st. I wanted to announce the likely date as soon as I could, so that staff, volunteers and visitors have as much notice as possible. I know that staff have been anxious to have some firm information about the date. “At its last meeting, cabinet asked the director of adults and communities to draw up a programme to implement the closure and the detailed work to support this is in hand. “I appreciate that the full council is likely to debate this issue on February 18th but I wanted to give an indicative date now and I’ll provide an updated statement, following the meeting.” The proposed date was chosen to link in with the end of the school year in Leicestershire and other parts of the Midlands. Earlier this month, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet agreed to close the current venue. If nothing was done, the cost to the council has been estimated at £900,000 per year. The decision came after the council and an independent assessor judged the Friends of Snibston’s plans to retain the current venue were unviable. The Century Theatre and the country park will remain open after this date. The historic pithead buildings, which are a scheduled ancient monument, will continue to be maintained.

In February's film, Jimmy Gralton returned from New York to his home in County Leitrim. Jimmy and his friends rebuilt The Hall where the young people could enjoy jazz and energetic Irish music as well as boxing, gymnastics, musical instruments and evening classes for literature and maths. However, the Church and the Landed Gentry felt threatened, saying "Education is not for the poor". Jimmy's socialist ideals brought about some reforms eventually but to our exasperation, he was deported from Ireland, back to New York, for the rest of his life. "The Hundred Foot Journey" will be shown on Friday March 13th and lasts 124 minutes. This uplifting comedy drama, starring Helen Mirren, charts the battle of wits between two restaurateurs in a close-knit French village. Circumstances necessitate Papa Kadam, with his Indian family, setting up his business across the road from the eating establishment of Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). They eventually learn to see eye to eye over the simmering saucepans and as they lovingly stir their thick sauces, our mouths water. “Mr Turner" will be shown on Friday April 10th and lasts 149 minutes. Timothy Spall actually learnt to paint to play the complicated character, JMW Turner. Spall certainly deserved the British Independent Film Award nomination for Best Actor. There was also a nomination for a BAFTA in Cinematography. Turner spent years in London with his beloved father but he led an unusual life. He had a relationship with a Margate landlady, while his impressionist works of art caused wrath at the Royal Academy of Art. We see in this beautiful film how Turner created his masterpieces. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" will be shown on Friday May 8th. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £5 and concessions are £4.50. There will be refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets can be purchased via the parish office - 0116 236 7626 or at the door.

Meeting Peter Andre was 'insania', says Estelle A Slimming World Consultant from Anstey says meeting singer and TV presenter Peter Andre was the perfect way to get set for a superslimming start to 2015. Estelle Burton, who runs a Slimming World group at South Charnwood High School, Markfield every Monday and Anstey Methodist Church, Anstey every Wednesday, was thrilled to get a chance to cuddle up to Peter when he co-hosted the Slimming World Awards with the organisation’s chair and founder Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE. Estelle said meeting the Mysterious Girl and Insania singer was a wonderful way to round off what’s been a great 12 months for the Markfield and Anstey Slimming World groups, as well as the perfect way to kick start another successful year: “I’m so proud of all of the members of the Markfield and Anstey groups. They’ve lost fantastic amounts of weight throughout 2014, with many of them reaching their target weights and improving their health substantially. “It’s so rewarding to see people achieve things that they didn’t think possible before losing weight, whether that’s wearing smallersized clothes, taking up new hobbies, reducing medication or being able to do more with their family and friends. Meeting Peter was a real treat – he was such a nice guy – and a great way to celebrate all of that. Now I feel powered up and I can’t wait to help my members hold on to all of the fabulous changes they’ve made, and to support even more people to become happier and healthier in 2015.” Two-time celebrity dad-of-the-year Peter, who famously featured on the ITV show I’m a Celebrity… in 2004 and now presents Peter Andre’s 60 Minute Makeover, said he was delighted to meet Estelle at the event, which was held at Birmingham’s International Convention Centre. He added: “Being in the public eye there’s a

lot of scrutiny and if you put on even a pound or two the magazines and newspapers are extremely quick to point it out, so I’ve always tried to take care of myself and watch my weight. However since becoming a dad I’ve realised it’s about more than just looking good, it’s much more important to me that I’m fit and healthy and setting a good example to my children. At the awards I met lots of people who’ve lost incredible amounts of weight and it has completely transformed their lives – and their families’ lives too. They’re eating more healthily and being more active, and so are their families. And every single one of them told me that they couldn’t have made those changes without the support of their Slimming World group and their Consultant, so people like Estelle are clearly very important.” Flattered by Peter’s kind words, Estelle hopes even more people will join Slimming World and benefit from making healthy lifestyle changes this New Year: “I truly believe that joining Slimming World is the best way for people to lose weight this January. Getting off to a great start is really important when embarking on a slimming plan; seeing results on the scales and feeling lighter and brighter will motivate people to keep going and achieve their goals. Everyone will be sure of a fab start with Slimming World this New Year and even if people have struggled to stick to weight loss plans in the past, I know we can help them to make a change for life this time around – my members and their success are proof of that. “Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan isn’t a ‘diet’, we simply help our members to discover new healthy habits and a healthier way of eating that they can enjoy without ever ;lp[feeling hungry or deprived. They make small easy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat, introduce activity to their daily

love

Slimming World

routine, and get regular support to reward their successes and overcome the hurdles they face along the way. This helps them to stick to their personal goals and can make a big difference to the way members feel about themselves as well as their weight. “On top of seeing success on the scales, our group is a great place to make friends. We’ve had a lot of fun throughout the year – we’ve held parties, raised money for charity and members have cheered each other on with every step of their weight loss journey. I can’t wait to see what 2015 holds for the Markfield and Anstey Slimming World groups and I’d love anyone who’s thinking about losing weight this January to join us at South Charnwood High School, Markfield every Monday and Anstey Methodist Church, Anstey every Wednesday.” To power up your weight loss in 2015 call Estelle on 07919 284924 or visit www.slimmingworld.com

MARCH NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW WATCH OUT FOR FREE TRIAL SCAMS AND POP-UPS Action Fraud has seen an increase in the amount of victims signing up for free trials for unapproved or misleading pharmaceuticals or supplements. The scam usually involves a ‘pop up’ on your computer or a text message advertising a free 14-day trial. In signing up to this trial you are asked for your credit or debit card details and after the 14 days have elapsed, recurring payments are taken. Recurring payments or continuous payment authorities are similar to a direct debit, but can be much harder to cancel or identify who is debiting your account. In most cases victims are finding it extremely difficult to cancel the subscription and the products are either not delivered or are inferior. Common pharmaceuticals or supplements being advertised are teeth whitening products, food supplements and slimming tablets.

Protect Yourself • If you desire such products speak to your GP or a local pharmacist. • Be vigilant of free trials and always read the Terms and Conditions. • Conduct basic online research of the company before registering your details and financial information. • It is important to remember that in most free-trial cases because you have paid for a product and received it, this cannot be recorded as a fraud. If you have already entered your card details on one of these websites, call up you bank immediately to stop these payments and give Action Fraud a call on 0300 123 2040 for advice.

HOW TO CREATE STRONG PASSWORDS TO PREVENT YOUR ACCOUNTS BEING HACKED Fraudsters regularly hack into personal online

accounts to obtain details which will allow them to defraud you. To prevent fraudsters, it’s very important to use strong passwords when setting up and accessing online accounts and online banking. Passwords should be memorable enough not to have to write them down and long enough to be unique and hard to guess, which will ensure they are less vulnerable to being stolen. If it is not possible to remember passwords a password manager could be used to store them securely.

Protect yourself: • Make sure passwords are memorable so that you don’t have to write them down. Make sure they are unique. • Th!nk ab0ut how you could change the l3tters in your n0rmal passw0rds to make them more difficult to gue55! • Use long, non-dictionary words and use different ones for each of your personal accounts and online banking. Make sure you change them regularly. • Make sure passwords are not stored on devices that have shared access by other people, for example in internet cafes and when using other public Wi-Fi. If you believe you have become a victim of account hacking, change your passwords immediately and report to Action Fraud: www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud The above advice can be found on the Police website. www.leics.police.uk

attending then the others. It is very important for the coordinator’ to attend their welcome meeting as this is when they sign to register their scheme together with that of the police.

LEICESTER ROAD / NED LUDD CLOSE SCHEME Sorry for any confusion caused in last month’s article. I have had a very nice email from a resident on Leicester Road who expressed her disappointment to learn that her coordinator had resigned leaving her scheme unregistered. This is after many of the members had attended a welcome meeting and obtained their welcome packs. Because I was waiting for the coordinator to let me know how many other members she had, there are still a few of you who are still waiting for these packs. In addition to this your street signs are still waiting for someone to put them on the lamp posts. Please if you live in this area, think about being the new coordinator, this will enable the members to take advantage of the perks of being a member of Anstey NHW.

NEW AREA’S Now that the days are getting longer and warmer, I will be out and about again soon, to set up some more schemes in Anstey. I hope someone will be willing to be the coordinator for these schemes. If you would like to contact me for any reason, my contact details are: Phone: 0116 236 5745 email: diane@ansteynhw.co.uk

FILMREVIEW

Have your say on proposals for county waste sites

Focus:

Nicky Spurgeon is an absolute pro. He knows how to manipulate, and can make anyone trust him. When young, aspiring con-artist Jess Barrett appears on his doorstep and asks him to teach her everything he knows, he obliges, and is relieved to discover that she has the gift, too. She’s a natural, and that, combined with her stunning good looks, makes her almost impossible to resist.

RESIDENTS, charities and businesses can help shape the county council’s proposals to save £1.1 million at household waste and recycling sites.

Nicky knows that business and pleasure don’t mix, and when things start to go horribly wrong, he struggles to keep his head in the game. Jess is the ultimate femme fatale, and they soon get tangled up in the web of corruption they have built. Can the conman pull off his biggest stunt yet and block Jess out of his head?

• Reducing site opening times

With a wedding to plan and rooms quickly filling, Sonny may have bitten off more than he can chew. And when Douglas’ ex-wife Jean (Penelope Wilton) turns up out of the blue, she threatens to ruin the happy atmosphere. Can Sonny and Muriel save the hotels, and will Douglas and Evelyn be free to marry? From director John Madden comes the sequel to the hugely popular The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, starring a host of famous faces from the first film, as well as Tamsin Greig (Episodes, Tamara Drewe) and Richard Gere (Chicago, The Double). The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a charming romantic comedy, proving that the butterflies don’t stop just because you’re retired.

Proposals for waste sites include: • Restricting free use of the sites by those living outside of Leicestershire county

• Restricting free disposal of non-household waste such as bricks, rubble and other DIY waste

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is open for business, and Sonny (Dev Patel) has rooms to fill. In the original guesthouse, British residents Evelyn (Judi Dench), Douglas (Bill Nighy), and Muriel (Maggie Smith), along with a host of other familiar faces, have settled into living in India, and as time goes on, they start to wonder where their lives will take them. Madge (Celia Imrie) has two suitors to keep her entertained, while Douglas is thinking that he might just like to marry Evelyn. Muriel is helping Sonny manage his little empire, but as the pressure of two businesses increases, he struggles to keep on top of everything.

The council wants to hear people’s views on a variety of proposals to reduce costs, without having to close sites completely. Blake Pain, county cabinet member for waste, said: “The council needs to save £1.1 million from its household waste and recycling sites budget, as part of its overall £120 million savings.

At the moment, the council spends £27.4 million per year on waste and recycling and it needs to reduce that figure by £4.9 million by 2018/19. Alongside proposed changes to household waste and recycling sites, the council is also reviewing recycling and reuse credits. Around £120,000 is paid each year to approximately 40 charity and community groups that collect household waste for reuse and recycling. Charities and community groups will be directly engaged with to shape proposals to ensure they are supported in the most effective way. Options for making savings could include only paying credits for materials where other recycling or reuse facilities are not available - e.g. mattresses or carpet. The consultation will run from February 2 to April 26. You can have your say at www.leics.gov.uk/ haveyoursay/futurewastemanagement The council’s cabinet will consider the results of the consultation and decide on which proposals to take forward later this year. Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society Our meeting on 17th February 2015 was very well-attended to hear Ernest Miller’s detailed presentation, “The River Lin (a River through Time)”. This seemingly insignificant waterway, which in fact is only known as the “River Lin” where it passes through the parish of Newtown Linford, has provided an important water supply for local communities for generations. Its source within Ulverscroft Reserve, where it is known as Ulverscroft Brook, is fed from nearby springs, so beginning its journey onwards to flow eventually into the River Soar at Quorn. Not far from the brook’s source, there remain two separate stone-lined channels which look as though they might have been eel traps, but there is no way to confirm this. However, in a published book, “Breakfast at Bradgate”, the author mentions the ingredients of crayfish and eels. The next notable use of the water flow is the situation of Lord Stanford’s 6 feet deep fish pond. There was already a nearby mill at the site, so presumably, the existing mill pond was utilised to create the fish pond. Further on, but some distance from the brook, stand the remains of Ulverscroft Priory which had a three-sided moat and is one of several moated sites along the route of the brook/river. Water-filled moats were considered to be an essential method of protecting vulnerable property from unwelcome intruders. A less savoury use of the fresh water supply is evidence that sewage from the Priory drained directly into the brook, which was most unhealthy for people living further downstream who

depended on the brook for water for drinking and cooking! No wonder people drank more beer than water, because beer was safer! Looking at an overhead map, it can be seen that in the area between Priory Lane and Polly Botts Lane, the brook was re-routed in order to create a water meadow, known as Nowel Spring Meadow. When there was a need to prevent animals straying and contaminating an area, a ditch surround would be dug, as in the case of the site of Ulverscroft watercress bed which used to benefit from its fresh spring water supply. Sadly, the watercress bed has long been neglected with minimum evidence of its former proliferation. At Lea Meadow and Barn Leys there are further moated sites and the meadow was allowed to flood periodically to promote grass growth. Ulverscroft Mill (now a ruin) was in use up to about 1940 and here the brook/river makes a U-turn and forms the boundary between the parishes of Ulverscroft and Newtown Linford. Onward through Newtown Linford, on reaching the cricket pitch the river takes a sharp turn leading into Bradgate Park. As it flows through the Park, the river’s course has had intermittent settling ponds introduced – this was done in order for any silt to be cleared before the water flowed into Cropston Reservoir. It is thought that when Bradgate House was still occupied, water was fed from the river to the rear of the house to supply not only the daily needs of the residents, but also to fill a

pond for the mill at the house. Further water meadows were situated within the Park. Swithland Reservoir is kept filled by the overflow from Cropston Reservoir. Both reservoirs were drained on separate occasions for maintenance work to be done during the second half of the 20th century, and aerial views of each still clearly showed the original course taken by the river/brook. From Swithland Reservoir the brook, now known as Bybrook, feeds through to Swithland Mill and is complicated by the fact that two brooks flow here. After Swithland parish, there is another name change to Buddon Brook as it flows via Chaveney’s Mill and Farnham’s Lake, past the Quorn moated site and on to join the River Soar. Throughout history and particularly during the Middle Ages there were frequent disputes regarding rights to water supplies, especially in relation to the use of water for mills, which often led to legal proceedings. We are fortunate today to have fresh clean water so readily available.

From Jennifer Kennington Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 17th March, when our speaker will be Society member, Jane Smith, whose talk will be about the history of two well-known Cropston families. Time: 7.30pm. Venue: Harrison Room, All Saints’ Church, Thurcaston. All welcome. Visitors: £3 per meeting.

Newtown Linford Gardening Club Our winter continues to be grey and quite cold but not too much of the white stuff and only short term frosts. The snowdrops are beginning to show in abundance but seem to be appearing in penny numbers rather than all at once. It seems the ground has been hard during parts of January and so the shoots have had to work harder to push through. Perhaps this year we will still have snowdrops and aconites at the same time as the early daffodils which should make for a grand spectacle. Our talk in January on Garden Birds from Dr Edwards of the RSPB attracted an audience of 60 members and guests. It was good that we now have the use of the large hall because our numbers have certainly made the small hall impractical. Dr Edwards was a fine speaker and kept us entertained and educated for the full evening. On March 24th we welcome back Carolyn Tait whose subject this time is seed propagation. Carolyn has a prestigious position at Coton Manor which is, as many of us know, one of the finest gardens in the West Midlands. She is a very knowledgeable gardener with many years experience at the highest level and we are delighted to welcome someone of her stature. We have welcomed a large number of new members this year and will be pleased if others want to join us. If you are interested in our activities just contact the secretary (tel. 242452 or e-mail 01530242452@talktalk.net) , or come to one of our meetings to see how you like it before making a commitment (£2 for visitors). Alternatively give us a ring and ask for a copy of our programme for the coming year and we will be pleased to send one to you.

March In The Garden If the weather is fine March can be a very busy month in the garden. New growth can be seen and the gardener’s optimism returns, a bit of sun works wonders. If the ground is not waterlogged or frozen then early herbaceous perennials can be planted now along with summer flowering bulbs such as lilies and gradioli. Add supports to newly emerging herbaceous – it is far easier to do it now than when they are in full flow. Start to prepare the veg beds, if the soil is workable dig in compost or well rotted manure and weed well. If you have grown green manure that can be forked in now. If you wish black polythene can be laid on the prepared beds to keep the soil dry and warm before using. If the weather is suitable and set fair and the ground is friable early potatoes, onions, shallots and garlic can be planted. Asparagus can also be planted in prepared beds. Start direct sowing carrots, radish and lettuce either in greenhouse borders or under cloches. Mulch fruit trees and rhubarb (don’t cover the crown). If you have peaches and apricots protect their blossom from frost using fleece and spray emerging leaves with Bordeaux mixture to help prevent Peach Leaf Curl. Bring bags of compost into the greenhouse so that they can warm through before sowing veg and bedding plant seeds. Ventilate the greenhouse on warm days. Pot up plug plants in hanging baskets and patio containers, keep in the warm until mid May when hopefully all threat of frost is gone. Clean paths and patios using a dedicated patio cleaner. If you are wanting a new lawn get the ground prepared ready for seeding next month or new turf can be laid now if the ground is not frozen or water logged. If you don’t already have one consider buying a water butt for use during the summer.

THE MONDAY CLUB

Shopping Habits Change

ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY

How often do you shop for food? These days, chances are that you are buying ‘little and often’, popping into your mini-supermarket several times a week, and buying only what you need for the next couple of days. It is a thrifty way of living; the trend has helped to reduce food wastage by as much as a fifth, compared with seven years ago. According to a survey by Waitrose, one in four of us is visiting a ‘convenience’ store at least once a day. Perhaps it gives a whole new insight into ‘Give us today our daily bread…’

Cinema Costs WHEN WAS the last time you went to see a film? Did you tally up just how much the evening cost you? It seems that going to the cinema is no longer the cheap alternative to a night at the theatre or a meal at a restaurant. A recent study by the Sunday Telegraph has found that a single ticket in some urban venues can cost more than £20, while just popcorn can be as much as £5. Figures from the British Film Institute (BFI) show that the average cost of a cinema ticket has risen by 26 per cent in the past five years. Whereas in 2008 it was £5.18, nowadays the average price is £6.54. BFI figures show that overall, the average price of a cinema ticket has soared above inflation for the past 30 years.

The February 9th’s Meeting was initially focused on the AGM, wherein there was much reported on the previous year’s activities and events all of which were acknowledged and accepted. Although the attendance of members was rather small – several Members were struck down by the distressing virus presently circulating the villages, this did not detract from the happy atmosphere, which indicated to the Committee, that we are providing adequate interest and a good atmosphere month on month. Sadly we have lost a few Members through illness, disability and death, but we have recently had three new Members join us and are hopeful that the Programme for 2015 will be of interest and encourage new Members when they will receive a very warm welcome. Following through the business of the AGM, we were treated to a a very amusing and interesting talk given by the Rev. Sharon Constable entitled “Weddings through the Ages”. Our Members were invited to bring along and display their Wedding photographs and Sharon proceeded to take us through the changes of styles of Wedding dresses through the 20th Century; it was also fun to discover who was who from the Members and hear some of their stories of the background of how they managed their Weddings at the various times, through the World Wars 1914/1918 and 1940/1945, 1920 and subsequent decades.

Sharon had been a Priest for 16 years and described the changes in the styles of both Wedding dresses and the changes of the conduct of the Wedding Services; apparently latterly Bridesmaids precede the entrance of the Bride which was an American idea. Dresses of all shapes, sizes and colours were gradually introduced, along with sizes and content of the Bouquets for the Bride and her Maids. Our next Meeting will be on Monday 9th March, when Mr. Christopher Tarratt will talk about “A day in the Life of a Jeweller”. The well known Leicester Jewellers “Tarratts” have been part of Leicester City life for very many years, so his talk should be very interesting, I wonder if he will bring us any samples for free! Do try to come along and join our happy group. Our Meetings take place at 2.15pm at the Cropston Evangelical Chapel, Station Road, Cropston, LE7 7HP on the 2nd Monday of every month. Plenty of parking space available. To find out more about The Monday Club, please ring me on 0116 2363467. I have an ansophone, so if I am not available, please leave a message and telephone number and I will return your call.

Ann Farndon.

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club Saving Seeds: Saving Money by Pauline Pears The February meeting of the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club was a most interesting talk about saving vegetable seeds. Pauline Pears, our speaker, worked at Garden Organic, Ryton for 30 years and has built up a wealth of knowledge about horticulture. Garden Organic is also home to the Heritage Seed Library. Pauline suggested a number of reasons why it was good to save seed (apart from saving money). You can harvest lots of high quality seeds which are often more vigorous than bought ones. You can keep your favourite varieties (they can disappear from catalogues without warning from one year to the next). You can be confident that your seeds are grown without the use of pesticides (if that’s important to you). You can select your own strains and save the genetic heritage of seeds. But for Pauline, growing plants from the seed she has saved is now an integral part of how she gardens. It gives her an increased feeling of satisfaction and self-sufficiency. It's also fun and interesting. Pauline also talked about the best place to store seeds, how long seeds can last, pollination, and suggested some seeds that are easier to save than others. Garden club members took part in a very interesting quiz

by identifying various vegetables by their flowers (before going to seed). Pauline recommended the Garden Organic website www.gardenorganic.org.uk for more information. This talk was well organised and structured and Pauline shared a huge amount of information. The talk was supported by some brilliant photographs of a wide variety of seeds. Pauline’s was well received by a good number of members and visitors who were able to ask questions. After the first two meetings, the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club programme has got off to an excellent start this year!! The gardening club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall Whether an experienced gardener or an enthusiastic beginner we are sure you will something of interest in this year’s programme. New members are made most welcome. There are 12 events planned for 2015, including a trip to Waterperry Gardens in Oxfordshire. What’s more, it is excellent value!! The membership fee is £12 for the year or £3.00 per meeting. And, if you would like to come as a visitor and then you decide to join, your visitor fee will be refunded!! ALBUM TO RAISE CASH FOR CHARITY WHICH HELPED FAMILY The mother of a three year old boy with a serious heart defect has recorded an album of songs she wrote for him. Charlotte Grabowski, 27, hopes to raise money for Heart Link, at Glenfield Hospital, which her collection of childrens songs. The charity has helped her son Billy, who suffered a cardiac arrest when he was 13 months old. The incident happened at the family home in Loughborough, in 2012. Charlotte said “I watched him go blue in my arms while the paramedics worked on him and I didn’t know whether or not he had died. The paramedic didn’t know whether to shock him as he was so small, but he did and called for an ambulance to take him to hospital. I wasn’t sure whether I would see him alive again” Billy was diagnosed with cardiacfibroma - a benign tumour which measured about 6cm by 4cm - growing on his heart and needs regular check-ups and assessment to make sure his heart is beating strongly. Now, Charlotte, with the help of her dad Rob Francis, 51, have created a charity album and recorded it with the help of producer David Moore at Studio 3Zero, in Birstall. Charlotte said “It’s made up of lullabies I sing to him at night and songs I sing with my guitar when he’s in the bath. There’s another song about going to the zoo, which I sang to him on the way to Twycross. They’re all very personal and mean something to us. “I hope we can raise some money for a very good cause” Gill Smart, Heart Link treasurer said “You would think newborn babies come with everything perfect but some times they don’t and parents don’t know what to do. So we look after the whole family, not just the children because everyone needs support. We rely on the public helping us out as it’s the only way we exist. We don’t get any funding at all.” Charlotte said “Heart Link gave us somewhere to sleep right next to the ward where Billy was and offered a lot of facilities to help Billy with his recovery and to make us feel at home. Teamed with the charity Keep the Beat and all the hard-working staff, they make the children’s heart ward, Ward 30, as comfortable and homely as they can.” Charlie and Robbie’s Heart Link CD, which has 5 songs on and costs £5 is available from Charlie by emailing charliefrancis@hotmail.co.uk
