The Official Opening of the New Martin High School Wednesday 18th September at 10.30 am in the foyer of the school’s new building, Lady Gretton, Queen’s Representative officially opened the new 11-16 Martin High School. This was a day for all those who have supported the MHS to celebrate. The school’s Student Council welcomed guests who included Lady Gretton, Sandie Forrest, Mayor of Charnwood, Colonel and Mrs Martin (the school was founded by the Martin family), Councillor David and Joan Snartt and, Mr Resham Singh Sandhu, Sikh leader and Mrs Sandhu.

Planning Committee rejects housing development Readers may be interested to learn that the proposal to build 34 houses on land to the rear of 237 Bradgate Road Anstey, as reported in recent editions of the Local, has been unanimously rejected by Charnwood Borough Council’s Planning Committee. The Council received over 100 individual letters of objection together with a petition of almost 700 signatures, demonstrating people’s concern for the Charnwood countryside and worries about over-development in the region. The report of the planning officer noted significant and material considerations that resulted in the advice to the committee to reject this application. Local residents are pleased with the outcome so far. Should the developers appeal the decision there will be the opportunity to make further representations. On Sunday, 8th September, The Severn Trent Water Visitor Centre at Cropston was a hub of activity for the Annual LOROS Walk on the Wildside sponsored walk, where over 500 people turned out in support. The Mayor of Charnwood Councillor Sandie Forrest and her Consort Mr Roger Forrest officially opened the walk. Leicester City’s Filbert Fox, along with Brad, the bumble bee led the activities and warmed all the crowds with a fun exercise routine. Everyone had the opportunity to browse the craft stalls, children’s activities, and a variety of food outlets – including a huge array of bug themed cakes. This year there were two routes to choose from – a new 7 mile and the 13 mile walks. This event meant a huge amount to the walkers – most carrying out the walk in memory of loved ones, including Ishvar Rohit who took part in his 10th ‘Walk on the Wildside’ in memory of his wife Kamla. Christian Weikert-Picker, LOROS fundraiser said, “It was a super day, ideal for walking – not too hot and not too cold. There were smiles from participants en route and a great amount of supporters from the community, as well as dogs and their owners. We are looking at a pledge of over £30,000 through sponsorship, which will make a huge difference to the running of the hospice. This is one of our major fundraising events in the calendar – well done to everyone who took part and helped make the day such a huge triumph.” Due to the ever-growing success of this event, LOROS are already planning next year’s event which will take place on Sunday 14th September 2014. Support for youth team Local Letter from homebuilder Leicestershire homebuilder Davidsons has sponsored new shirts for the Anstey Swifts 2007 Under 15s football team in time for the new season. The team finished runner up in their division last season and were promoted to Division D of the Leicester and District Sunday Junior League. Many Anstey residents will be aware that since March 2011 there have been no buses from the city centre to Anstey after 9/10pm, and that free bus travel for senior citizens before 9.30am is no longer available. All on the grounds of ‘cost cutting’ or ‘market forces’. Residents will also be aware that the ‘Leicester Mercury’ magazine has asked for your suggestions regarding cost cutting. In view of these matters I would like to know why a brand new shelter has been built on Anstey Lane between Gorse Hill Hospital and the western bypass traffic island (travelling towards Anstey) at a bus stop where no-one ever catches a bus (and a very,very small number alight there)? Can anyone enlighten me as to how much this has cost?
On page 4 of the Leicester Mercury of Monday 9th September there was a news item about the ‘Greater Leicester bus passenger charter’ which has been drawn up and signed by a meeting of the panel at Leicester Town Hall. Is the bus users panel aware of this anomaly and if so how do they justify it? It would appear that the ‘facilities’ offered by the bus companies, Leicester City and County councils are constantly being ‘improved’ in inverse proportion to the number of buses people can actually travel on. POLICEMATTERS Welcome to this months Police Matters from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The published crime figures cover 19th August to 19th September 2013. Unfortunately, we have seen a spike in House Burglary in this period with 4 being recorded. 3 of the burglaries happened over one night (7 Sept) in the James St / Edward St area, and the break in on Balladine Rd happened overnight 15 September. Sadly, to add to the stress and inconvenience the breaks already inflict on the householders, a vehicle was also stolen from 2 of the breaks. It may be a timely reminder therefore to ensure that all car keys (including spares) are hidden out of sight at all times. When locking up and going to bed at night take your car keys with you and hide them away. Never leave any keys in doors or on tables in full view through windows / doors etc. If anybody has any information regarding the burglaries, please call Police on 101. We have also suffered 4 thefts from motor vehicles that were literally that – thefts from the actual vehicle as opposed to the usual items from within it. Two of the vehicles had wheels stolen, one vehicle had a front grille stolen and the other was a moped that had an exhaust stolen. This type of crime is unusual and is clearly a crime ‘to order’ (wheels were stolen from 2 Ford KA vehicles) and would possibly have meant the offender being around the vehicle for some time. Therefore, please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity with persons hanging around vehicles. Please ensure all wheels are fitted with one
locking wheel nut for each wheel. The other crimes of note all involve the Gynsill Tennis Club, Gorse Hill, which has been targeted for breaks over the last few weeks. I realise that the club is a little out of the way, and therefore not overlooked by residents, however the path is well used for people walking up to Beaumont Leys so could I also ask that if residents are passing the club, any suspicious activity is also notified to Police. If you feel a crime may be in progress then please call 999. Enquiries into these breaks have progressed well, and hopefully by next month we should be able to inform you of a positive result. Finally, the end of September sees some staffing changes, with PC GERWAL moving onto pastures new within the force. Ravi’s replacement on the beat will be PC 1841 Stu PARKER who some of you may already know. Stu spent over 2 years working the beat previously so he will hopefully already hit the floor running when he joins the team.

Community event at Anstey More BRAS needed in Methodist Church Older and vulnerable people living in the Anstey area will be able to find out more about the support that is on offer to them at a community event jointly organised by Leicestershire County Council’s adult social care team and the library services. The event will take place at Anstey Methodist Church on Thursday, October 3rd 2013 between 10am – 2pm and light refreshments will be provided. Representatives from a number of council and voluntary organisations have been invited to showcase their services. The organisers are also asking for local people to come forward if they feel they have a skill or some voluntary time to give in support of their community. A spokesman for Leicestershire County Council said: “Often what people want is a chance to get together, have a chat and get out of the house. “Places such as the library can offer a venue for small groups to get together such as ‘knit and natter’ or scrabble clubs, but it often takes someone from the community to come forward and start the ball rolling. “We’d like to find out what kind of things people are interested in and then match them to people in the community who are looking for an opportunity to get involved.”
Warning over suspected bank card phone scam PEOPLE are being warned to beware of a phone scam designed to trick them into giving out confidential bank card details and account information. Leicester City Council’s Trading Standards officers are warning residents to be on their guard following a report from a member of the public who was targeted in a suspected scam earlier this week. The man received a phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer from Spinney Hill police station, who had arrested a person trying to use a cloned credit card in the man’s name. The caller asked the man to check that he had still got his bank card, which he had. He was then told to contact his bank by ringing the telephone number on the back of the card. The phone then went quiet - giving the effect of the caller having hung up when he was really still on the line. The scam works when the unsuspecting victim attempts to ring the bank but really ends up speaking to the original caller, who then asks for confidential bank details, such as security details, card details and even the pin number. In this instance, the intended victim didn’t ring the bank - he repeatedly dialled 1471 to try to establish the caller’s identity, only to be met with verbal abuse. Suspecting it to be a scam he then reported the incident to the police. Now Trading Standards officers are warning other people to be on their guard against such potential scams. Leicester City Council’s Trading Standards manager Ronald Ruddock said: “The scam works by the criminal caller staying on the line and then answering the new call, tricking the victim into believing they are on a call to their bank. “The fraudster will then either ask the person for their pin number, or ask them to key their pin into their telephone keypad, before saying that the bank will be sending a courier to collect the card. “Needless to say the courier will be part of the scam with the criminals ending up with both the credit card and pin number. “This is a variation on the ‘courier scam’, where residents are told that banks or building societies will collect bank cards, and residents should remain suspicious of any call that requests personal banking information. “Criminals are continuing to become highly sophisticated in their attempts to trick consumers into giving this information away. The quick thinking of the potential victim in this instance may well have saved him a lot of money.” Banks and building societies do not send couriers to pick up bank cards, nor will they ever ask customers for their pin numbers. People should never give out pin numbers or the security code off the back of their cards in these circumstances. To report or discuss any form of scam, contact the Citizens Advice Bureau helpline on 08454 040506.

The Charnwood BRAS (Breastfeeding Reassurance And Support) group is recruiting more volunteer peer supporters to ensure every area of Charnwood is covered by their services. A training programme will be taking place and applications are particularly welcome from women living in Anstey and Sileby where breastfeeding rates are low. The Charnwood BRAS group hopes to see an increase in the number of babies who are breastfed which will help to improve the general health and wellbeing of children, their mothers and future generations. The volunteers provide information, reassurance and support to parents and parents-to-be at every stage from pregnancy to weaning, through one-toone support, a telephone helpline, breastfeeding cafes, antenatal workshops and returning to work sessions. There are about 20 peer supporters in the group who have all taken part in the La Leche League Peer Counsellor training programme. One of them is Tamsin Robinson from Anstey, she explains why the service is needed, “Before having a baby, many women have never seen a baby being breastfed so there is a lot to learn about how to hold your baby in the correct position, how to help the baby attach to your breast so it’s comfortable for both of you, and of course about how amazing our hormones are in creating this supply and demand system of complete nutrition and natural medicine!” Joanne Talbot, part of the Health Visiting team in Charnwood, helps to co-ordinate the peer supporters and says “The current volunteers do an amazing job in supporting parents and parents-to-be but they do the work in their spare time which of course is limited when you have small children so we need more volunteers to ensure that as many babies as possible are being breastfed.” Find out more about Charnwood BRAS and becoming a peer supporter at www.charnwoodbras.co.uk or on Facebook or by telephoning 07583 041054

The 30th Annual Show of the Thurcaston & Cropston Gardening Club moved from the village hall to the Richard Hill Primary School this year. This proved to be a huge success. Our new home, with its extra space and light and airy atmosphere, attracted a record number of exhibitors. Exhibits were up to their usual high standard and it was most pleasing to see so many people entering for the first time and this was reflected in the winner’s list. Mr Phil Dews retained the Sedgwick Cup for most points overall and the Challenge. Trophy for the best points total by a Garden Club member. New names were Mrs Alison Briggs who won trophies for Best Exhibit in Show (3 Roses in 3 Stages) and the Orton Bowl for vase of 3 roses. Mr John Holyoake, entering for the first time, took the Novice Shield for the most overall points scored by an exhibitor who has never won a Club trophy before. The Delia Brook trophy for photography of the year award went this year to Peter Smith, after years of domination in this class by Roy Emmett. Also it was great to see a new name on the Junior Cup, Oliver Keran was joint winner with James Lacey, well done to them both. This cup is awarded to the junior who scores the most points in the adult classes. The children gave us another colourful and imaginative array of entries in the junior classes and a very special thanks to the Girl Guides and the Brownies for their excellent contributions.

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate. Planning Applications. It has been a very busy time with planning applications being determined at Charnwood Borough Council's Planning Committee and new applications coming forward. This including an application to the City Council for traveller sites, one close to the county border on Greengate Lane. I know there have been concerns raised by residents especially ones living in Thurcaston. I understand these applications will be determined by the City Council at the 16th October meeting. Other applications in Anstey include a development of up to 35 dwellings on land north of Groby Road Anstey, adjacent to the new St James Gate development and an application for up to 57 dwellings on Gynsill Lane, Anstey. I attended the Planning Committee meeting on the 12th September. There was a lot of interest about the National Trust proposal to change Stoneywell Cottage, Lea Lane, Ulverscroft into a visitor attraction, indeed BBC TV have been filming as this application has progressed through the planning stages. I spoke to the committee, stating that there was no doubt this would be a significant addition to the National Trust portfolio, but outlined my concerns with the traffic management proposals within the application. The committee also heard from local residents and the Parish Meeting Chairman stating their real concerns with the proposals. Although members of the committee had concerns about highway safety, the outcome was to permit with conditions, which include restricting visitor numbers, visiting times, and a traffic management system that controls vehicle access to the site. It was particularly pleasing that the committee refused the application for up to 34 dwellings on Bradgate Road, Anstey. I did object to this proposal and spoke to the committee on behalf of my colleague Paul Day. May I take this opportunity to thank all the residents who took the time to provide evidence and registered their objections to this proposal, I am sure it made a difference.
The Leicestershire Round. I attended a short presentation which took place at the Ruins in Bradgate Park to celebrate the 30th Birthday of the Leicestershire Round. The round is a 100 mile circular route that takes in rolling countryside, picturesque villages and wildlife rich woodland. Sometimes raising money for good causes at the same time, walkers have explored the flagship route since it was established in 1983 to celebrate Leicestershire Footpath Association's Centenary. The Leicestershire Round circuits the county, covering landmarks such as Bradgate Park, Foxton Locks, Burrough Hill and Bosworth Battlefield. The route mostly follows public rights of way which are managed by the County Council, although there are some sections on quiet roads, unsurfaced tracks and a canal tow path. Charnwood Forest Lottery Bid. Sir David Attenborough has offered his support to a funding bid aimed at enhancing the Charnwood Forest. Leicestershire County Council and its partners have applied for ÂŁ2.4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help support projects that aim to boost and preserve the unique landscape of the area. In a letter of support to Lottery bosses the much loved naturalist described Charnwood Forest as a "precious lung for those living in Leicester and other towns and villages that lie around it" he also said that his visits to the Forest were "the highlights of my Leicester boyhood". Heritage
Lottery Fund officers have made a visit to see key sites and find out more details about the bid. The decision on the first round of the bid will be made in late October. Projects which would benefit from a Lottery grant include a new heritage centre to be run by the Mountsorrel Railway Project and a new cycleway link through Castle Hill Country Park. Changes to Concessionary Travel. Due to savings having to be made at the County Council, as detailed in my last report. I have received information that after public consultation the Cabinet have decided to no longer provide all the discretionary concessionary travel elements that have been previously available. The following will remain in place. The English National Concessionary Travel scheme entitles elderly and disabled residents to free travel on local bus services between 9.30am and 11.00pm Monday to Friday and any time at weekends and bank holidays. This is a statutory service, therefore will remain in place. Broadband. A ÂŁ16.9 million high speed broadband deal which will boost Leicestershire's economy has been signed by the County Council and BT. When combined with plans by the private sector, this should enable 95% of homes and businesses in the county to access faster internet speeds within three years. Over the coming months the County Council will be working with BT on the detailed

Great Central Railway Scoops Grant from Biffa Award Money will pay for improvements and renovations at Quorn & Woodhouse Station Quorn & Woodhouse station on the award winning Great Central Railway is set for a facelift. The railway's supporting charity has secured a grant of almost fifty thousand pounds from Biffa Award. Repairs will be made to the grade two listed station staircase, an original 1890s Great Central Railway storage shed will be completely rebuilt and for the first time proper paths for people who use wheel chairs will be provided in the station yard. Managing director of the Great Central Railway, Bill Ford said, "We're are delighted with the grant which will enable us to not only make vital repairs but also significantly improve the experience of our visitors. Working with Biffa Award will really help to protect our Victorian heritage. I would like to thank our funding team who have worked so hard to secure the award. The work will complement our recently developed family cafĂŠ and newly installed turntable." Gillian French, Biffa Award Programme Manager, said: "We are proud to support this project, which will bring to life the story of this rural railway goods yard from the steam era, so that it can be enjoyed by more of the local community as well as visitors from further afield". Other works at Quorn station will include new signs which will help interpret how a goods yard at a country station worked. Work will begin on the improvements before Christmas.

Leicestershire letting agents and landlords all under one roof An innovative new website which aims to improve the standard of privately rented properties in Leicestershire has been launched. The Homefinder scheme www.homefinder.uk.com - has been set up for landlords and letting agents in the county, offering support and advice and providing a range of services all under one roof. Landlords and letting agents can advertise their properties for free, and at the same time keep up-to-date with current legislation, have access to documents, videos and toolkits to help manage properties, information on available grants and loans, and free training opportunities. There are already over 70 letting agents signed up and 500 properties on the website, from shared houses to executive homes. It can be viewed in multiple languages, and features include a housing benefit calculator and an online referral form for customers seeking support to remain in their current home or move to an alternative one. Blaby District Council has led on the development of the scheme, which had the original aim of increasing access to privately rented properties across Leicester and Leicestershire. Councillor Maggie Wright, portfolio holder for Community Services, said: “The launch of Homefinder is going to benefit both tenants and landlords, ensuring there is quality housing available in the district. It is extremely promising to see the amount of landlords and letting agents already on board and I hope to see this fantastic scheme roll out further across the county and beyond.” National Landlords Association (NLA), Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA), Decent and Safe Homes (DASH), Leicester Landlords Association (LLA), Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) and Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) are all supporting the Homefinder scheme. Linda Selvey, Landlord Accreditation Manager at DASH, said: “We are really pleased that there will be a place where tenants can go to look for properties belonging specifically to accredited landlords”. “This website will help tenants have confidence that the property they rent is of a good standard, is being responsibly managed and more importantly that the landlord belongs to a recognised scheme like DASH landlord Accreditation. We hope to work in partnership with Blaby District Council to develop the website across the East Midlands giving more landlords and tenants this excellent opportunity.” Alongside the launch of the Homefinder website, a Landlord Local Authority Working Group has been set up. We had great fun attempting to identify old objects brought by speaker Bob Neill, whose parents used to run a shop similar to Arkwright’s in “Open All Hours.” Some were relatively familiar, but others, such as a pipe reamer, and a lazy daisy maker, were much more perplexing, and gave rise to some wild speculation and mirth. The highest scoring team comprised Krystyna Killam, Sue Ellway, Mary Chapman and Elizabeth Robinson, and no, they were not the oldest of those present!

(John joined the school aged 11 in 1957 and continues his association as a bus driver who daily brings our students to school from Glenfield), Mr Doug Kenny and Ms Marion Smith, founding teachers from 1957 and other local people who have actively supported or given up their time in advancing the school. Those invited also included the School Governors, County and Regional officials who have worked hard to ensure that we can convert into an 1116 school. The official opening recognises the new start that the school is making. The conversion means that the students can stay on to the age of 16 where they will take their GCSE examinations. This move has the support of the whole community. As you can see from the pictures, it was a fine celebration led by the Student Council who have worked tenaciously to make the conversion successful. The ceremony included a welcome by the Chairs and Vice Chairs of the Student Council, Zak Harris, Morgan Bates, and Lauren Fawcett (pictured). Mr Furniss, Head Teacher, thanked all those who had supported or who will continue to support the school in its conversion. Mr David Saville, Chair of Governors, welcomed Lady Gretton and invited her to open the building. In a well-informed speech, Lady Gretton praised the school for its tenacity and determination in its move to become an 11-16. She recognised the achievements of the last 57 years and confidently predicted the school’s future success. The ceremony ended with students escorting guests around the school. On tour they visited the new block of 8 classrooms; the new music area,

pening of the High School complete with recording studio and the new fitness gym which had just been installed on the 17th September. Guests were overwhelmed by the welcome and enthusiasm of the MHS students. They commented on their confidence, motivation and their determination to develop their school. It is great fun for a student to take part in such a venture. The conversion to 11-16 involves the school growing from 630 pupils in July 2013 to 940 pupils in September 2014. Lady Gretton opened Phase 1 of the buildings required. With the continued support of its community, the school is looking forward to building further classrooms, science laboratories, refurbishing the art and technology area later this year and eventually building a sports hall for the school and community. Overall the conversion is going well and is forging new relationships between school, government and local business. The Education Funding Agency have provided over ÂŁ1 million for the new buildings. Local builders, Davidsons are further providing ÂŁ303,000 which will greatly assist the school in its second phase of development when it will build a further classroom block and science laboratories. Mr James Wilson, Managing Director of Davidsons, is looking forward to further supporting the school with this project. With the new buildings, the school will ensure that all students who are in catchment area primary schools will secure a place at the Martin High School. The Open Evening for Year 6 parents is set for 26th September at either 6.00 pm or 7.00 pm. The Open Days for parents of years 6 and 9 are Wednesday, 2nd, Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th October. Year 9 introduction to Key Stage 4 evening is set for 9th October.

Local Air Training Corps Squadron, 2070 (Glenfield) Squadron Cadets Cadets Field Craft Weekend In June, the local Air Training Corps Squadron, 2070 (Glenfield) Squadron Cadets took part in a Field Craft weekend at John Lee’s Wood Scout Campsite, which offers a forest environment to carry out elements of fieldcraft activities. For a lot of the Cadets this was their first taste of camping with the Squadron and it gave them a chance to learn a number of skills that they will put to use for their Duke of Edinburgh Award and future Adventure Training with the Squadron. Over the two days training was carried out in camp craft, observation skills, camouflage and concealment, duties of a sentry, and an orders group training experience. As well as Sgt ATC Gibson, Sgt ATC Elton and CI Clarke taking the lead in the instruction and organization of the weekend, in addition there were three Students who are currently at University awaiting their commissions representing the Navy, Army and RAF. Good to see ex Cadet Lear. who is currently studying his degree, before being commissioned in the RAF Engineering Branch. Over the weekend the cadets, tested their technical skills in all the elements of training, as well as pushing themselves out of their comfort zones.

The Challenge now is to maintain the high standard that we have set ourselves. Bronze National Navigation Award Scheme On 15th and 16th June. Cadets who are currently doing their First Class Training embarked on a two day Bronze National Navigation Award Training and Assessment. The weather was good and Cadets were all in good spirits, as they undertook the various navigational and walking challenges, that the route and terrain gave them.
Wing Field Day 2013 South and East Midlands Wing again hosted their annual Wing Field Day at RAF Wittering. Wing Field Day consists of competitions in first aid, drill, leadership, shooting, modeling, aircraft recognition and media communications. As always Cadets were keen to represent the Squadron and there was a team in all the competitions.
Cadets agreed that this two days course was a great introduction to expedition and adventure training, giving them basic instruction and allowing them to practice the theories for themselves. All the cadets were successful and will now gain a nationally recognized award and additionally gain experience and confidence before starting the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

Council welcomes report on county's health Public Health England has today (September 24th) published public health profiles for Leicestershire http://www.apho.org.uk/ resource/view.aspx?QN=HP_ RESULTS&GEOGRAPHY=31 The summary says: "The health of people in Leicestershire is generally better than the England average. Deprivation is lower than average however, about 14,300 children live in poverty. Life expectancy for both men and women is higher than the England average." Ernie White, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet member for health, said: “"I'm pleased that, overall, the report shows that Leicestershire is a healthy place to live - but I'm not complacent and the county council is working with partners to make further improvements. "We will unveil our proposals to improve public health through our health and wellbeing strategy.”

Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society On 17th September 2013 we were pleased to welcome Canon Anne Horton, Rector of St Leonard’s Church, Swithland, who gave a well-illustrated and intriguing talk entitled “The Story of Rothley Plain”. Canon Horton began by explaining that when she first arrived as Rector of Swithland, she took time to explore her parish and those parishes which bordered her own, discovering many historic connections between them because the whole area was once part of the Groby Manor Estate – a fact shown in a survey of 1658. Today, there is little to distinguish Rothley Plain from the general development of Rothley as a whole, but a map of Leicestershire drawn in 1777 by local schoolmaster and clergyman, John Prior, who was born in Swithland, clearly shows the area and its significance as part of the Manor of Groby (or Grooby as it was spelt then). Woodland was known as “a grassy area between woods” and villagers had historic grazing rights for their animals. Over the centuries there were various disputes over the use of the land, mainly between the Babington family of Rothley and the Grey family of Groby, one example in 1749 being over the rabbit warren which was an important source of food supply. Things changed dramatically, not necessarily for the better, when the Enclosure Acts began to take effect from 1750, with Rothley being enclosed in 1782 and Swithland and Thurcaston in 1799.

From September, around 12,500 parents will receive forms for children who transfer to secondary school in the autumn term 2014. Leicestershire County Council is reminding parents that moving to the next school is not automatic and encouraging them to apply before the 31st October closing date. The transfer process is the same for a local authority school or a recently converted academy. If parents apply late - even if they live next door to the school - their child is unlikely to get a place. Anyone expressing a preference for a non-catchment school is urged to also apply for a place at their child’s catchment school.
Rothley Plain today is the long, narrow strip of housing on the outskirts of the parish of Rothley, to the west of Swithland Lane, with the Great Central Railway’s Rothley Station at its southern end. In the late 19th century this area became part of the plans for the creation of Rothley Garden Suburb, the vision of the Manchester shipping merchant, Frederick Merttens. There was further development between the two World Wars and Canon Horton had some photographs of the various properties and some of their residents. Later, significant events which affected the area were the sale of the Swithland Hall Estate in 1954 and the Rothley Temple Estate in 1973. In the 1980’s, David Wilson’s building proposal, “The Gallops”, was turned down, but by the beginning of 2010 the Rothley Ridgeway Conservation Area came into being, its aim “to preserve and enhance the special character of the garden suburb development which began following the opening of the Great Central Railway to the west of Rothley”. Perhaps a little of Frederick Merttens’ vision has been realised by this achievement.

County Policing For Your Local Over the last month we have seen an increase in burglaries across the county and we are encoring people to ensure they lock all doors and windows when leaving their house. It may seem obvious but when the weather is nice it is tempting to leave windows open and this is when your home is most vulnerable. Also please bear in mind where you leave your car keys, as we have had a number of car key burglaries recently where thieves break in, take the car keys and steal the car. If you are going away, we recommend either hiding your car keys, if you are not taking them with you, or leaving them with a friend. We have also seen an increase in reports of theft from motor vehicles, mainly in beauty spot car parks such as Bradgate Park. When leaving your vehicle please ensure that you do not leave your valuables on display, either hide them away or better still take them with you.

Rush Hour!! I recently watched a TV programme about the traffic problems they are having in London. Apparently traffic moved at 9mph in1913, in 2013 it is 9mph! I wondered how fast the traffic was travelling through Anstey at peak times. or as it is ludicrously called 'rush hour'. The traffic in Anstey in the morning between 7am and 9am and evening between 4pm and 6pm is becoming horrendous. Traffic spreads out from the Nook up Bradgate Road and Cropston Road and increasingly coming down Stadon Road . Groby Road is also becoming a by pass for motorists coming in from Newtown Linford. And it will get worse!! Residents tell me that geting out onto Groby Road from Falcon Road is very difficult at the best of times as vehicles are allowed to park on the left hand side at the bottom of the road. I recently had a letter from the County Council concerning speed ramps along Groby Road and Bradgate Road. While I am in favour of slowing down the traffic I did point out in reply that speed would be not be a problem when the housing developments on Groby Road are completed as some 400 plus cars and a bus service would be making their way to and from Bradgate Road and onto the A50. By the way how does the Groby Road area come to be called St James Gate? What's the answer? Encourage car sharing? Better public transport? Who knows, perhaps it is one of the penalties of the population growth and people moving out from the City. Keep it on its lead. I am often amazed to see how many dog owners walk around the village without their pets being on a leash. It's a way of showing off, look how well behaved my dog is what they are indicating. There are numerous occasions when unleashed dogs lunge at other dogs which can then seek to avoid being attacked by jumping into the road. For the sake of your much loved pets please keep them on a leash in and around the village, particularly in those areas highlighted above. I think it is illegal not to have a dog on a leash in a public place. Another job for our police to keep an eye on. Get a Bell. How often are you surprised by cyclists brushing past you, especially when walking in the Castle Country Park. You have no idea they are behind you and risk a collision which can be really bad if it involves more vulnerable walkers. Cyclists, get a bell and while you are at it wear a helmet.

Free Friday travel is available on the city’s park and ride services for commuters during October. The free tickets to ride are valid before 9am and can be used to park and ride to Leicester from Birstall, Enderby and Meynell’s Gorse and return. Glenfield U3A, News Update... During August membership of the Glenfield branch of the U3A reached 200. A volunteer to co-ordinate the second Walking Group came forward and several members had their first walk in Martinshaw Woods and the Ratby Burroughs on a fine weather day and finished off the walk with lunch at the Plough P.H. in Ratby. Walking Group 2 meets at 10.30am on the third Wednesday of the month. Another new group – Pilates - starts at 9.20am on Tuesday 10th September. The Pilates group will meet at the Sports Pavilion, Gynsill Lane, Glenfield on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month from 9.20 - 10.30am. Rachel Clarke, a qualified Pilates teacher will be taking the group and each session will cost £4. Most of the groups have continued throughout the summer months apart from Computing which starts a new 6 week session in September. The computing sessions take place in Glenfield Library at 2 pm on the second and fourth Mondays of the month. Groups are small, usually 6 members and are tutor led with at least two "helpers", so there is plenty of support. Sessions are themed, but designed to be flexible and respond to what members want. Some people have a laptop or tablet that they bring with them but if you do not have a laptop then the U3A has some
repeat night of live music from the 60's on Saturday 2nd November – tickets £10 (supper included). Open to non-members. The event will be held at St Peter's Church Centre.

The Memorial Hall has provisionally been booked as the venue as St Peter’s Church Hall is unavailable but this may change if a more suitable venue can be found for the choir to perform.
The Table Tennis group started on 20th June at Beaumont leys, Leicester Leys Leisure Centre and takes place on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at 2pm. The cost is £3. The indoor bowls group were forced to take a summer holiday whilst St Peter’s Church Centre was closed for annual maintenance but are back there now every Friday afternoon at 2pm and is as popular as ever.
On Tuesday 7th Jan 2014 there will be a New Year Luncheon at St Peter's Church Centre. Bookings are being taken from stallholders for next year’s U3A Craft Fair to be held on Saturday 29th March 2014 at St Peter's Church Hall.
Change too for the well-established history group in September, the group has outgrown the current venue at the Scout hall and are moving to the new Sports Pavilion on Gynsill Lane. On 12th September there will be a talk about the National Trusts acquisition of Stoneywell an Arts & Crafts cottage near Ulverscroft.

Newtown Linford Gardening Club There were 79 people at the Gardening Club’s garden party in July. Despite heavy rain during the morning we were able to sit outside on a warm evening drinking Pimms and eating hot dogs and a wide variety of sweets. Plants and books were available for purchase and a raffle provided over 20 prizes. Mike and Liz Newcombe’s two acre garden provided a substantial venue and the view of the Leicestershire countryside from the garden is always glorious. This annual event is one of the highlights of our year and becomes more popular every time. Mike and Liz opened their garden to the public under the auspices of the National Garden Scheme in late July and early August. On the two days they were open some 500 people paid them a visit and around £2500 was raised for charity. These events are held all over the country and the amount of money raised for charity is enormous. The visit of Christine Walkden on October 22nd has caused a lot of interest. All the tickets have now been sold out and a waiting list for returns has been set up. We have welcomed a large number of new members this year and will be pleased if others want to join us. We are having Barbershop singing taster course on Sunday afternoon October 13th 3pm til 5pm and Monday evening 14th 7-30 til 10pm at the Birstall Social Club, Wanlip Lane, Birstall, culminating at the end of the week on Friday 18th of October with what is known in Barbershop as an “Afterglow Concert” at the Social Club, this concert will be in aid of LOROS, donations on the door. OCTOBER’S NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW WELCOME MEETING Thank you to everyone from Kitchener Road, Andrew Road, Charles Drive, King Williams Way, Gladstone Street and Albion Street who came to the recent welcome meeting. I hope you all found it very interesting, despite no Police presence which was due to unforeseen circumstances, at the last minute. Thanks to Richard (Dick) Moore, James Shaw, Kaine Smith and Lesley Douglas for volunteering to be your NHW coordinators. I hope they have all managed to introduce themselves to you and given you your welcome packs. Apologies to the residents of Kitchener Road for the long delay in arranging your welcome meeting, you should have a coordinator shortly who will register your scheme to enable your NHW street signs to be displayed. ANSTEY GALA It was really good to see so many of you visiting our stall at the recent gala. Congratulations to the person who won the hamper, hope you enjoyed it. If anyone is interested in becoming a NHW coordinator for your street please get in touch. I am hoping to be able to say that Anstey has a complete blanket coverage of NHW schemes soon. NEW AREAS TO BE COVERED At the moment we have someone setting up a scheme in Stadon Road & Hooks Close. I am going to try and set up schemes in Highfield Street and Woodgon Road next. I am very disappointed in the lack of people opening their doors to me when I knock to collect the forms, when I know you are at home. I state on the forms that I will be round to collect them in a week. If you don’t wish to answer your door, can you please have the courtesy to either leave the form out so I can see it, or email it back. My email address is on the form. NHW COORDINATORS URGENTLY NEEDED We have unfortunately a few vacancies for the position of a NHW coordinator for the following schemes: Burgin Road, Netherfield Road & Holgate Close, Birkdale Road & Hazelhead Road and Ashfield Drive. These schemes are already set up so they require very little work - we just need representatives. If you think you would like to take over any of these schemes or require further information, please get in touch with me as soon as possible. I look forward to hearing from you. DARK NIGHTS ARE ON THE WAY It is getting to that time of year again when the nights are getting longer, and people are coming home in the dark. Can you please think about leaving your lights on a time switch or a radio on, so it appears that someone is in. This is a good deterrent for the burglary.
