One of our founder members, Elaine Hunt, wrote the first pantomime HATS performed way back in 1992. She has now teamed up with another member, Phil Walton, to write this years pantomime, "Bah! Humbug the Panto". Phil has also written all the songs and put together the music.

Christmas Festival at Birstall

Youth Café demonstrates success The Sorrel Youth Café opened its doors to the public last week aimed at raising awareness of the important work it is doing.

Over two events members of the new Youth Management Board, joined the Youth Officer, volunteers and Trustees in welcoming local residents, Borough and County Councillors, representatives of its funders and working partners. The events attracted approximately 70 people.

At the Methodist Church, Wanlip Lane in Birstall on Friday 29th & Saturday 30th November they have a Christmas Festival when the church will be decorated with trees, models, displays, etc. with a theme of ‘Stable Story’.

This year proceeds are for church funds and for Asthma UK. The suggested admission price is £1 but accompanied children are not expected to contribute.

On Friday 29th there will be a whole range of stalls including home-made cakes, pies, pastries, jams chutneys & pickles.

Christmas gifts, decorations, crafts & novelties. Santa will have a grotto and refreshments will be served throughout (including a Hot Dog stall pancakes & punch). Light lunches are available on both days. Open at 10am & runs through until 7pm.

On Saturday 30th there will be over 20 stalls at a ‘Table Top Sale’ from 10am to 1pm.

New Sales Manager For Your Local Teresa is the new sales manager for the area, she has recently joined the team and is currently out and about introducing herself. If you need to talk to Teresa she is happy to pop over and see you to discuss any advertising or editorial needs you have.

On her visit to the Café Nicky Morgan MP spent time catching up on the Café’s progress. She told us:

The Sorrel Youth Cafe does a huge amount for young people and the wider community in Mountsorrel. Their work is clearly having a positive effect on anti-social behaviour levels locally and I am particularly impressed by the confidence building they do and their support for young carers. I am encouraged to hear about all their plans for future work.

As part of both events visitors could have a hot drink and a piece of homemade cake whilst looking around the various displays and talking to Café volunteers and users. The exhibition demonstrated the progress of the Café since its early beginnings in 2010. It also highlighted the work it is currently doing and its future plans for specialist youth work, opening the café to residents on a Thursday morning and ideas for developing its catering services with young people. Graham Lloyd, the Cafes Youth Officer said: We have a lot of great things to shout about and I am very proud of the excellent work we are doing. The Café has been on an incredible journey and is now very much part of the Mountsorrel community. These events are excellent for feeding back our achievements and we are really pleased with the numbers of people who came along. Thank you to all the young people and volunteers that made it happen.

One of the other aims of the events was to highlight the Cafes need for continuing support. This is both financial and practical. As a charity the Café can always use direct funding and other forms of financial support. For example it is looking for sponsorship to acquire new carpets, a new freezer and help to redecorate. On a more practical note it also needs more volunteers who can spare some time for things like fundraising, helping to manage the project and staffing the café during the afternoon session. In particular it is looking for a suitably experienced person to take on the important role of Treasurer.

CLA scrap metal victory will frustrate thieves The CLA says that licensing laws introduced on 1 October – as a result of campaigning by the Association – will make it even tougher for thieves to dispose of stolen scrap metal.

The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 will require all scrap dealers to apply for a licence from their local authority and to keep records on who they buy from.

Together with the ban on cash payments for scrap introduced earlier this year, the opportunity for thieves to dispose of scrap metal without being traced has become almost impossible.

CLA Midlands Rural Adviser Donna Tavernor said: “We are pleased to see the results of our lobbying put in place so the growing problem of metal theft can begin to be tackled. “We believe new regulation should only be put in place when absolutely necessary, in this case to deal with the menace of scrap metal thieves. “Farm machinery, lead stolen from roofs, and copper cable taken from power and phone lines all cause major problems to rural business and communities so these changes to the system will give local authorities real power to combat the rise of metal theft.�

Birstall Christmas Lights Switch On & Christmas Market Friday 6 December

Roadworks suspension ahead of Christmas Daytime work on a £2.7m scheme to relieve congestion and improve safety on one of Leicestershire’s busiest junctions will be suspended over the Christmas period. Leicestershire County Council is carrying out the work on the Asda / Fosse Park roundabout.

Work will be suspended in the day from Friday, November 22 to January 6 for the busy Christmas shopping period. There will be some overnight work during this time which may result in some lane closures at night. In the day all carriageways will be open.

Birstall Parish Council plan to make this years Switch on event, bigger and better than ever, there will be a number of attractions for you all to enjoy: this year the switch on will be performed by a Cliff Richard tribute artiste.

Ahead of this, work on a new entrance / exit will mean there will be no access this weekend to the nearby Narborough Road South, west service road, (from midnight Friday, November 15 to 5am, Monday, November 18) from the Fosse Park roundabout.

Residents will be able to access the road from the Post House junction – diversions will be clearly signed. Peter Osborne, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “This is an important scheme which will help improve traffic flow and safety at this busy junction.

THE MONDAY CLUB BIRSTALL ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY

Our last official meeting for 2013 was November 11th , in Cropston Evangelical Chapel, and was an extremely happy one.

Our guest Speakers were the Thurcaston Handbell Ringers, who have been ringing as a group for just four years, resulting in a very competent and pleasant sound.

Mr. Peter Hunt, the Leader of “the Band” informed us that it took four years for the ChurchTower Bell Ringers at All Saints Church, to save to provide funds to buy the Handbells (valued at £300 each!) and the eventual purchase was made when Mr. Hunt and his wife went down to London to the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. There are apparently, only two major Bell Foundries in the Country and the other being Taylors of Loughborough. The Bell Ringers are currently saving to acquire more bells needing an F sharp and AB flat, which would extend their repertoire and Ring in G and F Major.

Currently there are six ringing at any one time each with two bells; one in each Gloved hand.

The gloves are required to protect the Leather Straps from perspiration from the hands causing discolouration and discomfort.

We were assured you do not have to be able to read music as the Notation is in Numbers; so all you need is a sense of rhythm. On acquisition of further bells more ringers will be needed. As encouragement Mr. Hunt allowed us “to have a go” and amidst hearty laughter

from the membership, some of us acquired a little more knowledge than previously possessed!!

During the course of the last four years, the group have played at venues such as outside Tescos, Beaumont Leys, the Cedars Home on Station Road and Hunters Green in Thurcaston and for the Victoria Christmas Fayre at Stonehurst Farm resulting in a total collection for LOROS in the region of £2,000.

During the course of the Demonstration, Mr. Hunt interspersed with several enjoyable jokes which were thoroughly appreciated by the Membership, which together with the following refreshments of Tea with Mince pies and tarts, set the scene for the ensuing Christmas Celebrations!

In further acknowledgement, our member Mrs. Margaret Hooper, who celebrates her Birthday on the 25th December, very kindly brought along a large tin of mixed Chocolates. Fancy being born on Christmas Day!!

We’re prepared for winter – are you?

That’s the message from Leicestershire County Council which has launched its winter weather campaign, ahead of the gritters going out for the first time, on Friday 8th November.

The county council has 17 gritters, 80 drivers and a network of snow wardens, farmers and 4x4 drivers ready to take to the roads. Its five grit barns are stocked up with 18,500 tonnes of grit – a mixture of molasses and rock salt – and there are more than 50 farmers who, during deep snow, will fit ploughs to their tractors, to clear roads.

However, the council wants residents to know they can also do their bit by preparing for the colder months. Peter Osborne, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We always prepare early for the winter to ensure we are ready to keep the road network up and running during icy and snowy weather.

“We’ve also taken stock of 5 new gritters this year, replacing older vehicles, completing the upgrading of our fleet of 17 gritters at a total cost of £1.7m.

“However, this year we are also asking people to do their bit and prepare now for the winter.

“We’ve uploaded some helpful hints and tips to our website, which include information on staying warm, what equipment to pack in your vehicle and how to prepare your home for the winter months.

“As well as this we’ve also uploaded a helpful gritting map, which people can click on to see which local routes are covered.”

Are busy again with the run up to Christmas, some of our ladies together with the W.I. are busy practicing for the Annual Village Carol Concert in the Memorial Hall on the 10th December at 7.30 pm. This year we are anticipating the children from the village school are also taking part.

Our Coffee morning held in the Library in September was well attended, many thanks to all who worked hard on the day and all who supported us. During October we were taken around the lovely Island of Madeira by Mr Shreeve a must for all you touristy people – Mr Shreeve has donated £12,090 to Rainbows giving his slide shows of the delightful places and scenery he has visited. The competition of a picture of flowers was won by Brenda Chappell and second Sheila Golding.

The social get together, a knit and natter evening plus a quiz was our meeting the third week in the month. Well attended and a good night. November 7th “name that tune” proved to be a fun evening ending with tea, coffee and biscuits.

Our last meeting before our Christmas party is Joe Round on the 21st November giving a make up demonstration – just in time for Christmas! Do come and join us – we meet in the Parish Rooms on Leicester Road on the 1st and 3rd Thursday in the month.

We end the year with our Christmas Buffett Party on the 4th December and the Carol Concert on Tuesday the 10th December at 7.30 in the Memorial Hall.

Slimming World Members Have Their Cake & Eat It!

Stepping Stones Project

A coffee morning hosted by the Anstey and Rothley Slimming World clubs raised an astonishing ÂŁ 569.45 for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.

The Leicestershire County Council’s Stepping Stones project is looking to recruit more Tree Wardens to parishes across the county. Tree Wardens are appointed by local parish councils to coordinate local tree based environmental projects.

The event held at St Mary’s Church Rooms, Anstey on September 28th saw both Slimming World members and the general public enjoying a fabulous array of homemade goodies.

Tree Wardens are particularly needed in parishes in North West Leicestershire, Charnwood, Melton and Harborough.

Volunteering as a Tree Warden is a great opportunity for people to make their community a leafier place by looking after local trees. The scheme is open to all adults and there is no minimum skill level or time commitment required. Tree Wardens carry out a range of activities, from setting up tree nurseries and growing trees, to surveying and recording trees of local interest and organising awareness events for schools and communities. The role is ideal for people who are passionate about trees and want to learn more and develop new skills.

Marie Southam, who runs the Anstey Slimming World club said “the generosity of our members, local businesses and the general public who came together to support this fantastic cause was overwhelming and far exceeded our initial expectations.

Many members donated to our tombola and made cakes - all of which were delicious, local businesses donated some fabulous prizes to the raffle and the public enjoyed a lovely morning chatting over a coffee and piece of cake. As the Slimming World plan is flexible and has no ‘forbidden’ foods our slimmers also felt they could enjoy the tasty treats on offer safe in the knowledge that they could stay on the right track towards their goal.

Supported Bus Service Consultations to be Launched A date has been set for a series of consultations on the future shape of a number of subsidised bus services in Leicestershire. The six week consultations are due to be launched on Monday, November 4. Last year, the county council asked residents for their views on proposed changes to rural bus services, which would save the authority around £750,000 per year.

Having considered people’s responses and suggestions the council will now ask people for their further views on the revised proposals which will cover these routes.

The proposals will include timetable reductions on some bus services and the use of Demand Responsive Transport to replace others. Peter Osborne, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Each of these routes is subsidised and under-used with some carrying an average of one or two passengers per journey, and the most heavily subsidised costing the council more than £14 per passenger per journey.

“With the tough savings the council has to make this is unsustainable, so we will are looking at reviewing these services and, in some cases, proposing different travel options.

“We hope people will take the time to have their say and let us know what they think.”

People will be able to have their say online or by picking up a leaflet on their bus journey or requesting a hard copy of the consultation – details will be available at a later date.

Change in waste site opening times New opening hours for Leicestershire’s recycling and household waste sites (RHWS) come into force this weekend. From Saturday (November 2) the 14 sites run by Leicestershire County Council will open five days a week from 9am to 4pm.

These hours will be in place throughout the winter months, then from April 1 to September 30 each year sites will open seven days a week from 9am – 7pm. The reduction in opening hours was made following a public consultation, which more than 2,600 people took part in, to help save around £300,000 per year.

The five day pattern of opening is being arranged so that all sites are open at weekends and a proportion of the sites remain open each day for use by the public in the week. Blake Pain, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for waste management, said: “The council has to save £110m in five years and consider new ways of delivering services, which is why we have reviewed reducing the RHWS opening hours.

“There has also been a reduction in the amount of waste that goes through our RHWS, as well as the number of visitors to the sites, over the past few years so it made sense for us to look at this now.

“We did some research into the least busy times and listened to what people had to say before making the amendments to the times.”

The council’s RHWS are at Barwell, Bottesford, Coalville, Kibworth, Loughborough, Lount, Lutterworth, Market Harborough, Melton, Mountsorrel, Oadby, Shepshed, Somerby and Whetstone.

Charity searches for new recruits in Leicestershire and Rutland The number with dementia due to rise in Leicestershire and Rutland over next decade.

People in and around Leicestershire and Rutland are being urged to help Alzheimer’s Society to support people living with dementia. The charity is looking for volunteers for its Side by Side Befriending Service. Volunteers would need to give up to four hours a week to support people in the early stages of dementia.

There are already thought to be 12000 people with the condition in Leicestershire and Rutland. By 2021, that number is likely to reach 16000.

Suna Tilley from Alzheimer’s Society in Leicestershire and Rutland says: “The Side by Side service provides stimulation for people with dementia, which could be mental or physical. It may be companionship, such as sitting and having a cup of tea or it could be helping and joining them in an activity or hobby.

The service is important because it reduces people’s feelings of isolation.“ “Volunteers will be matched with people with dementia who share similar interests. They will gain valuable experience and develop a sense of value by providing a much needed and worthwhile voluntary service.”

The Leicestershire and Rutland Locality of Alzheimer’s Society provides ongoing training and support to all volunteers, who will be CRB checked and who should be over the age of 18.

BRADGATE SEWING CIRCLE Open Morning.

Each year members of the sewing group choose a charity for which funds raised are collected over the twelve months. To help swell this fund the group decided once more to open their doors to those who would like to see what we do each week.

So it was that this year our chosen charity being Cancer Research UK benefitted by the sale of a generous selection of handicraft items for sale, a number of pieces from the sales table, generous donations for tea coffee and biscuits. The raffle offered a first prize of a Patchwork Quilt made by members of the Sewing Circle, along with a Meal for Two kindly donated by Mandy and Jim at Rothleys well known Time and Plaice Restaurant, and included other prizes kindly donated by members of the group. The event was held Tuesday 15th October 2013 at the Rothley Centre Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley. All the members were gratified to see so many people admiring their handicrafts and watching them whilst they worked on ‘work in progress’ pieces .

There were items on display from Patchwork Quilts, cushions, miniature knitted items, miniature pieces, cross stitch, embroideries, tapestries and even hand made lace. Many of the members were on hand to demonstrate and explain about their pieces while others dedicated time selling from table tops, helping with the raffle and working in the kitchen providing refreshments. Representatives from Leicester’ local branch of Cancer Research UK were on hand with information about the charity. Members and Committee of Bradgate Sewing Circle are very grateful to those who took time out to call and see us at Rothley Centre and for all donations towards this deserving fund. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you all again sometime.

Leicestershire RSPCA Christmas Craft Fair Leicestershire RSPCA will be holding their annual Christmas Craft Fair in aid of the Woodside Animal Centre on Sunday the 17th of November at the Groby Vilage Hall from 10am to 4pm.There will be a variety of seasonal items, RSPCA goods pet tombola and excellent refreshments. Father Christmas is also expected to call in after checking up on Rudolph and his friends in Bradgate Park. Meanwhile he reminds us that pets are for life not just for Christmas.

Birstall and District Art Society 19th Annual Exhibition

Birstall and District Art Society held its 19th Annual Exhibition during the first weekend in November, which raised £263 in aid of LOROS. The exhibition was opened by renowned local artist, Kathie Layfield and over 500 visitors attended over the three day event.

Members of the Society are a mixed ability group sharing a common interest and the beginner is as welcome as the most accomplished artist. 147 framed paintings in a variety of media were exhibited, including oils, acrylics and watercolour, as well as mixed-media, together with dozens of ‘mounted originals’.

Once again the standard of work on display was extremely high and covered a number of categories, from portraits and figures, still life, landscape and woodland, water and boats, nature and wildlife, to abstract and experimental work.

Chance to build a platform for success through grant help Supporters of church halls, community centres and village institutes are being encouraged to bid for a slice of a Shire community building grant being offered

by Leicestershire County Council. A maximum grant of £6,000 and/or a loan of £4,000 is available to constituted groups which manage community buildings in the county.

There is a mix of funding available to cover capital work – improvements for buildings – and to offer support in business planning, advice and training to help with the day-to-day running of a venue.

One venue which has already benefited from a community building grant is Kibworth Village Hall, whose supporters successfully bid for £5,820 towards a kitchen refurbishment and building alterations.

Sarah Cripps, member of the village hall’s committee said: “Being successful with the grant application really brought a renewed sense of community spirit.

We are going to be able to refurbish our kitchen and make alterations to include better facilities for the disabled and a separate room for a newlyformed youth group.

“We’ve done our own fund-raising too, including a bike ride and a celebration event which, in total, have raised £4,000. We have been very grateful for the advice given by the county council in helping us to take a fresh approach to our refurbishment plans.”

The community building grant can support the cost of: • Major repairs, such as new roofs and floors: • Improvements which increase capacity; • Acquiring buildings in order to provide a community facility; • Constructing new community buildings; • Training and development of committee members, volunteers and staff; • Support with strengthening governance, developing business plans and community consultation.

Pam Posnett, the county council’s lead member for community engagement, said, “Buildings such as village halls are highly-valued facilities at the heart of communities and we welcome applications to help them to be effective, viable and sustainable.”

In the spring, Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland called for knitters to join in The Big Knit to raise much-needed funds to help keep local older people warm and healthy this winter.

Christmas has arrived at Ulverscroft Grange!

The Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation is delighted to announce that Christmas has arrived at Ulverscroft Grange Communality Support and Wellbeing Centre!

The charity shops are now stocking the new Christmas selection which offers a wide range of festive items – gifts, decorations, stocking-fillers and much more!

Groups and individuals are invited to book in for a Christmas Lunch, served in the Tea Rooms. These are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 26th November, 2013 and pre-booking is essential.

The charity pledged to make a challenging 28,000 little hats for each of which Innocent drinks promised to donate 25p.

They may be seen in many supermarkets and stores in November adorning their smoothie bottles.

Santa will also be making a special appearance on Saturday 7th December, 2013 between 10.00 a.m. – 4.00 p.m. There will a small selection of Christmas stalls, Christmas music and the opportunity to meet Santa’s delightful friends from Charnwood Forest Alpacas. Admission to Santa’s Grotto is £5.00 per child.

Counting the birds that are counting on you Big Garden Birdwatch 25th and 26th January 2014 It will be eyes to the skies on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th January 2014, as the nation takes part in the RSPB’s annual Big Garden Birdwatch. The activity is the biggest garden wildlife survey in the world and last year almost 600,000 people counted the birds in their garden.

This year, participants will be hoping that further declines of garden favourites recorded last year have slowed down. Starlings hit an all-time low in the 2012 Birdwatch but their numbers then sunk by a further 16 per cent last year. Numbers of house sparrows, which are of high conservation concern, dropped by 17 per cent in gardens compared to 2012, whilst bullfinches and dunnocks fell by 20 per cent and 13 per cent respectively.

These worrying declines mirror the findings of the State of Nature report which was launched earlier this year by 25 UK wildlife groups with the backing of Sir David Attenborough. The report revealed that 60 per cent of the wildlife species included are in decline, and one in ten of these could be the road to extinction in the UK unless something is done to save them. (See note 1).

Big Garden Birdwatch, which has been running for 35 years, provides the RSPB with masses of information about changes in numbers of garden birds in winter, and helps to alert conservationists to significant declines in UK garden species like house sparrows and starlings. And this year, for the first time, participants are being asked to log some of the other wildlife they see in their gardens too.

The RSPB wants to know whether people ever see deer, squirrels, badgers, hedgehogs frogs and toads in their gardens, to help build an

overall picture of how important our gardens are for giving all types of wildlife a home.

The charity will gather useful information about these other species and share them with its conservation partners after the survey.

Once the RSPB knows which species people are regularly seeing, it will also be able to tailor its advice on giving nature a home so that people can help their wild visitors nest, feed and breed effectively. Participants don’t have to count these other species over the Big Garden Birdwatch weekend, just tell the RSPB whether they have ever seen them in their gardens, at any time of year.

To take part, people are asked to spend just one hour at any time of Big Garden Birdwatch weekend noting the highest number of each bird species seen in their gardens or local outside space at any one time. They then have three weeks to submit their results to the RSPB, either online at www.rspb.org.uk/ birdwatch or in the post.

Richard Bashford, RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch Manager says: “Thousands of people have been giving nature a home in their gardens across the country and Big Garden Birdwatch is a great way to reaping the rewards by seeing what creatures are finding a refuge there over the winter. (See note 2).

“And these are birds that really count on us. At this time of year in particular they come to our gardens for help – with food, water and shelter. Millions of people around the UK help give them a home by providing these things and the Big Garden Birdwatch allows us to check what impact their help is having.

“The situation has been dire for birds like starlings and sparrows over the last 30 years, but by knowing the exact situation, we can help to put things right.”

Some birds have had better fortunes over the years. Sightings of popular species like blue tits, great tits and coal tits have increased since the survey begun in 1979. Goldfinches, which were absent from the Big Garden Birdwatch top 15 in the early years, have featured regularly as a top 15 species since 2004.
