All the content has been written in consultation with young people, to provide engaging yet informative bite-sized content on topics that matter to them. Thank you to all the young people and schools involved, we couldn’t have produced something this fantastic without them and we hope that they will continue to inform us in keeping it fresh and up to date with the information they want to know about their health and wellbeing.

Rothley group in next stage to keep the village library open. We’re delighted to report that Rothley Community Library has moved onto the next phase towards becoming a community library, so that it will remain open. The County Council has reviewed all the business plans from libraries across Leicestershire, and has placed them into two categories: those whose business plans will progress into a transition phase and those that need further work developing their plans. The group will now be working closely with Paul Love from Communities and Wellbeing Services, along with Kristy Ball from the same department, who has already been helping to develop the plans. The library will be staffed by volunteers, but the services of free library loans from the county’s book stock, wifi and computer use and photocopying facilities will continue to be available. The group is now developing an agreed transition phase with clear steps, milestones and timelines for Rothley Community Library and the County Council in the transfer of the library. The group will also continue to work very closely with Voluntary Action Leicestershire, whose support has been crucial. The Parish Council has offered a generous contribution to costs, and a group of people has gathered who are giving their time on a committee, which is organising the many arrangements necessary. “It is my privilege to be working with all these supportive residents in order to achieve what this village deserves - a community library which we can feel proud to call our own, said Steve Mitchell, a parish councillor and chair of the library committee. Many local people, including children and young people, have been asked what they would like from the library service, and all their ideas will be considered. Many have also offered to help, and the group is still looking for ideas and offers of help and sponsorship from local people and businesses. In the next few months a volunteers’ meeting will be held to establish a working team. When plans are fully established, the library will reopen as a community library by next February at the latest, after a month’s closure while minor alterations will be made to the building. The committee and the county council are however hoping for a date this autumn, if the timescale can be met. The opening hours will remain a minimum of sixteen as they are now, although there may be minor adjustments within those hours to accommodate changes that come as a result of consultations. Rothley Community Library has a website, www.rothleycommunitylibrary.co.uk, and a Facebook page, and information is updated regularly. The group can be contacted through the website and Facebook, or by letter in the box in the Post Office.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Birstall & Wanlip areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing

a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Runners limbering up for marathon effort in aid of Joe Humphries Memorial Trust TWO keen runners are going the extra mile to raise cash for local charity the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust. Liz Donaghy and her boyfriend Nathan O’Reilly are gearing up to run for the Trust in this year’s London Marathon. It’s a particularly big achievement for 39year-old Liz, from Syston, because she had to pull out of last year’s race due to injury.

that SADS has on so many children and young people in the UK, I felt I had to do something to help. I'm honoured to be representing the Trust in this year's London Marathon and hope to help raise awareness of the Trust and the great work they do.”

Liz said: “I was lucky enough to win a ballot place in the London Marathon in 2014 and decided to use the place as an opportunity to run for the Trust, but I was devastated when I got injured with just five weeks to go. There is an option to roll your marathon place over to the following year, if you are unable to run due to injury, which is what I did.

The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT) was set up in memory of Leicestershire teenager Joe Humphries, who collapsed and tragically died while out jogging. Joe was a victim of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) – a group of lethal heart conditions and diseases which can cause sudden cardiac death in seemingly fit and healthy young people.

“I have run four half-marathons in the past but never 26.2 miles; this will be the furthest I have ever run! I train three times a week with the longer runs at the weekends. My last long run before the day will be 22 miles.

Since Joe’s death in 2012, JHMT has campaigned tirelessly for greater understanding and awareness of SADS, as well as providing vital life-saving CPR training for schools and sports clubs.

“I mainly run on my own as I like to run at my own pace, but I have Oasis, Jimi Hendrix and Michael Jackson to keep me company on my IPod!

The Trust also runs an awards scheme called Inspire aimed at helping young people to fulfill their potential by providing small grants for sporting, arts and community endeavours.

“I would like to finish in under five hours, but I’ll be glad just to get round at a steady pace and soak up the atmosphere.”

Liz added: “I wanted to support the Trust after hearing about them through friends and through my work for Kays Medical, which supplies equipment like defibrillators for workplaces.

Liz’s boyfriend Nathan, 39, a petty officer weapons engineer for the Royal Navy, is training for the event at his base in Scotland. He said: “I’m a regular runner but have been training since Christmas for the London Marathon. I first heard about the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust when Liz was fund-raising for them last year. “When I heard Joe’s story, and the effects

“After hearing about Joe’s story, I thought there must be something I could do to help them achieve their goals. I am great believer in the work they are doing in the community to help break the silence on SADS. The more people that can be trained to deal with life-threatening situations, the more lives could be saved”.

Charity Whist Drives Charity Whist Drives normally held at 7.30p.m in the Rothley Centre, Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley on the 1st Thursdays of each month will have two changes due to Easter(April) and Polling Day,(May) as such on these two occasions they will be held on the 2nd Thursday. Admission £2.00. All players welcome

Since getting involved with the work of the Trust, Liz has also helped to organize two fund-raising fashion shows and encouraged local businesses such as Next to donate generous raffle prizes to the charity. “I approached the Force India F1 race team and they kindly donated a factory tour at their Silverstone headquarters, which the Trust will soon be auctioning,” Liz said. “Everyone I have approached for help has been so generous.” Steve Humphries, chair of JHMT, said: “I’m always blown away by our fund-raisers’ generosity in giving up their time and challenging themselves to help us raise vital funds for the Trust. Liz and Nathan’s selflessness is fantastic. Each and every stride they take along the 26.2 mile route will also help the Trust to raise further awareness and expose the dangers of undiagnosed heart conditions and diseases like SADS which claims the lives of 12 young people (12-35 years old) every week in the UK.” To find out more about the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust, please visit http://jhmt.org.uk/ To sponsor Liz and Nathan, go to www.virginmoneygiving.com and search for Elizabeth Donaghy.

Kathleen Hodkinson, organiser of the three mile walk and a volunteer puppy parent for the Charity, said: “I see first-hand the valuable assistance the canine partners give to people with various disabilities, and I am impressed with the skills the dogs learn through the training process. “Organising a walk seemed a fun way of raising much needed funds for Canine Partners! “At the Big Martinshaw Woods Bluebell Walk there will be an opportunity to stroll through The Woodlands Trust site, take part in a raffle, a quiz and buy some goodies from our merchandise stand on the day.” Canine Partners provides specially trained assistance dogs to help people with disabilities such as opening and closing doors, undressing, pressing buttons, retrieving items, unloading washing machines, taking card and cash from ATMs and other everyday tasks that disabled people find difficult, painful or impossible to do for themselves. Canine Partners CEO Andy Cook, added: “The Big Bluebell Walk is a family fun event and we would like as many people as possible to join us on our spring scenic walk - and you are more than welcome to bring your dog along too. “We do not receive any government funding and rely solely on donations so the money you raise will help create more canine partnerships, transforming the lives of disabled people. “This year is a particularly special one for us at Canine Partners as we are celebrating our 25th anniversary, so come along and walk your support for the Charity.” The fundraising event is part of the Charity’s national Big Bluebell Dog Walk Campaign, which has raised more than £150,000 in the past 11 years. All funds raised from this walk will help the Charity to train more assistance dogs and transform the lives of people with disabilities, including wounded servicemen and women in conjunction with Help for Heroes. Situated just 2 miles from East Midlands Airport, Donington Park is unique. Over the past couple of years many of you may have seen the cut-and-thrust close competition of the Touring Cars on ITV 4, but there is nothing to match seeing the cars in action and up-close, driven to the limit around the hilly and winding Donington Park circuit. Part of the appeal is seeing the cars we drive every day (such as VW, Audi, BMW, Toyota, Honda and Ford), battle it out on-track. OK, these particular cars are race prepared, but they look pretty much the same, but emblazoned with the names of well-known sponsors. After the press conference we ventured outside to see the cars unveiled one by one, as the press entourage moved down the pit lane to photograph the dazzling machinery. A BRIEF HISTORY OF DONINGTON PARK

Donington Park started life as a motorsport venue in 1931. In 1971 it was purchased by local businessman Tom Wheatcroft, and it has played host to the British Motorcycle Grand Prix (1987), and the Formula 1 European Grand Prix (1993), with racing legends Barry Sheene and Ayrton Senna gracing the track. His investment programme continues, ensuring world-class standards are maintained.

To prove the championship is unlikely to be dominated by one team or make of car, the 10th fastest lap was under a second slower than Jason’s quickest time. No processional races in Touring Car land! The 30-40,000 die-hard BTCC fans go racing in all weathers, but I hope the weather gods smile on Donington this year. Only 20 minutes’ drive from Coalville, it is a convenient and enjoyable way to spend a Sunday or complete weekend. Racing starts late March, with the Superbikes here Easter weekend, and the Touring Cars returning 18 and 19 April.

Charities welcome Budget announcement of extra money to buy public access defibrillators. The budget of 18th March 2015 included, within the Charites section, the statement: ‘We’ll also set aside £1 million to help buy defibrillators for public places, including schools, and support training in their use to save more lives.’ Two charities, the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT) and the Leicestershire Heartsafe Programme have welcomed this announcement, as survival rates after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK are far below those achieved elsewhere in Europe and in the United States. Currently, only about 10% of those affected are successfully resuscitated and survive to leave hospital alive. The two proven measures that are required to maximise the chance of survival are immediate bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and early access to external defibrillation. Each minute of delay in re-starting the circulation worsens the chance of survival by up to 10%. The chance of survival can be increased two- to three-fold if CPR is started immediately and continued until a defibrillator is available. The increased availability of automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) that will be achieved by this new funding initiative will improve the outlook for victims of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Although the majority of cases occur in older adults with coronary artery disease, sudden cardiac arrest can also occur in seemingly healthy people and it is estimated that over 600 deaths per year occur in young people less than 35 years of age. Dr William Toff, Senior Lecturer in Cardiology at the University of Leicester and Co-Director of the Leicestershire Heartsafe Schools Programme said: “We welcome this additional funding to increase the availability of AEDs in schools and other public places. It is, however, essential that as well as improving awareness and availability of AEDs, more people are taught how to recognize cardiac arrest and perform CPR. We believe that these skills should be taught in all secondary schools and that is the aim of the Heartsafe Programme that we are delivering in Leicestershire in collaboration with the JHMT.”

Need Leaflets Delivering? Only £25+VAT Per 1000

To date, over 6,000 Year 10 pupils in Leicester and Leicestershire have been given hands-on training in CPR and over 50 schools have been provided with an AED. Dr Toff said: ”The provision of AEDs to schools not only provides a resource for dealing with a cardiac arrest should it occur on site but by making students and staff aware of the importance of AEDs and familiar with their use, it will bring about a change of culture and an expectation that AEDs should be more widely available in public places. This should ultimately lead to improved survival from cardiac arrest occurring in the community.” Dr Mike Ferguson (JHMT)and Dr Doug Skehan (Heartsafe) added "we are proud of the work we have led in schools and particularly the response of our volunteer trainers who deliver training for the year 10 pupils to give CPR skills and AED awareness. Direct feedback from pupils is almost all positive so we do think the education approach is valid and will transfer to a better public response to victims of cardiac arrest". JHMT and Heartsafe would like to see more areas within the United Kingdom follow the example set within Leicestershire.

APRIL IN THE GARDEN April is a busy month as it heralds the beginning of the growing season, and there is plenty to be getting on with. Now is the time to prepare the beds, incorporate farmyard manure or chicken pellets, of if you make your own compost and there is some ready then use that. Before it gets too warm and dry mulch perennials, shrubs and trees to try and conserve some moisture. Plant summer flowering bulbs such as Lilies and Gladioli. Herbaceous perennials can also be planted now, consider planting them in groups if the plants are small. If your herbaceous perennials need supporting then now is a good time to put the supports in place as it is easier to do this now rather than when the plants are larger. Direct sow hardy annuals into prepared beds. In the veg garden thin out carrot seedlings, if possible do this in the evening when the carrot fly is less active. Place twiggy supports on your rows of early peas. Some veg such as parsnips, radish and spring onions can be sown directly into your plot. Others such as brassicas, beans and sweetcorn should be started off under glass and gradually hardened off. Plant out strawberry plants, place cloches over them for an early crop. Start to sow tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers in a warm greenhouse. Plant up summer hanging baskets with small rooted cuttings and keep in the warm greenhouse. Prick out seedlings when they get their first true leaves. Pinch out the tops of fuchsias and sweet peas etc to encourage bushy growth. Now is a good time to reseed lawns. Make sure that the soil has been well prepared and keep it moist until the grass seed has germinated. If necessary apply a weedkiller to established lawns, mow as needed and aerate compacted areas with a fork or aerator. Keep an eye open for pests and diseases, prevention is better than cure. Clean paths and patios and dust off that garden furniture in anticipation of a glorious late spring and summer.

Anna’s worth her weight in gold! A weight loss consultant from Birstall has struck gold for the exceptional work she does in helping more than 100 people to lose weight at her local group every week. Anna, who runs the Birstall Slimming World group every Tuesday, has been awarded ‘Gold’ status by the national slimming club because of her success in supporting slimmers to reach their dream weight and the super service she provides to those members. The accolade is given to Slimming World Consultants who consistently have 100 or more members in their group over several months, and when the service they provide is so good that members come back week after week because they’re losing weight beautifully and wouldn’t miss their weekly group for anything. It represents the highest level of service in slimming and places Anna in the top 5% of the organisation’s 3,500 Consultants, meaning Birstall is home to some of the best slimming support in the UK. Anna says: “I am delighted to have received the ‘Gold’ award. I absolutely love my job, I’m passionate about helping people to transform their lives by losing weight and seeing them succeed is reward enough, but being given this recognition for the whole group really is the icing on the cake. This award belongs to the Birstall group’s 150 members. They’re the ones who make our group the success that it is, with their fabulous commitment, the wonderful support they give each other every week, and, obviously, their impressive weight losses while following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan. They make the group a fun, buzzy place to be and I can honestly say I always look forward to going to work. I truly believe I have the best job in the world. “The Birstall group has really put healthy weight loss on the map in Leicester. Together, they’ve lost an amazing 127 stone this year (January to March). Obesity is at record levels everywhere, many people are suffering a range of weight-related health problems from diabetes to heart problems and feelings of low self-worth that impact on their working and personal lives every day. It’s never been more important that overweight people get the support to make changes to and lead healthier lives – both for themselves and the future generations, their children, too.” To join the Birstall group, which is held every Tuesday at 5.30 or 7.30pm at The Village Hall, either pop along or give Anna a call on 07735 073811. Anna also runs the Rothley Slimming World Group on Thursday evenings at The Rothley Centre, 5.30 and 7.30pm

The Mayors Charity Bridge Drive As Mayor of Charnwood, Pauline and myself held a Charity Bridge Drive at Newtown Linford Village Hall on 12th February in aid of my charities, Canine Partners and Exairio Trust. The event was most successful with all 16 tables taken. I’d like to thank all the people who helped or made cakes and for the offer of prizes for the raffle.

Church to help people become savvy with their cash as households feel income squeeze A church is set to run three free sessions to help people in Mountsorrel get on top of their household finances. Members of St James in Birstall wanted to help their local community to best handle the economic climate so underwent specialised training from UK charity Christians Against Poverty and are now offering this opportunity to other communities in the Soar Valley. Now they are offering the short course aimed to putting the joy back into money by teaching people how to chart their household income and take control of their expenditure. Money coach Gill Chester, who will be leading the sessions called the CAP Money course, said: “With households feeling the squeeze on their disposable income, we’ve all got to get a bit more savvy about our money to get through these tough times. If you know how to save and budget effectively, it can have a hugely positive impact on the whole family.” St James is one of more than 1,000 churches of different Christian traditions across the UK who are regularly offering the course, as they work together to positively impact the communities around them. The CAP Money Course has been found to be useful for newly retired people, soon-to-be students, mums dealing with mounting bills, families saving for a wedding and everyone in between. She added: “We hope that we can help people, quietly and confidentially, take control rather than relying on guess work so they can plan for the future and weather the storm.” The first course takes place in the Bower Room, Christ Church, Rothley Road, LE12 7JU starting at 7.30pm on June 3.

The winner of the event with the most points, Mrs. Gail Tillen.
