Counting the birds that are counting on you Big Garden Birdwatch 25th and 26th January 2014 It will be eyes to the skies on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th January 2014, as the nation takes part in the RSPB’s annual Big Garden Birdwatch. The activity is the biggest garden wildlife survey in the world and last year almost 600,000 people counted the birds in their garden. This year, participants will be hoping that further declines of garden favourites recorded last year have slowed down. Starlings hit an all-time low in the 2012 Birdwatch but their numbers then sunk by a further 16 per cent last year. Numbers of house sparrows, which are of high conservation concern, dropped by 17 per cent in gardens compared to 2012, whilst bullfinches and dunnocks fell by 20 per cent and 13 per cent respectively. These worrying declines mirror the findings of the State of Nature report which was launched earlier this year by 25 UK wildlife groups with the backing of Sir David Attenborough. The report revealed that 60 per cent of the wildlife species included are in decline, and one in ten of these could be the road to extinction in the UK unless something is done to save them. Big Garden Birdwatch, which has been running for 35 years, provides the RSPB with masses of information about changes in numbers of garden birds in winter, and helps to alert conservationists to significant declines in UK garden species like house sparrows and starlings. And this year, for the first time, participants are being asked to log some of the other wildlife they see in their gardens too. The RSPB wants to know whether people ever see deer, squirrels, badgers, hedgehogs frogs and toads in their gardens, to help build an overall picture of how important our gardens are for giving all types of wildlife a home. To take part, people are asked to spend just one hour at any time of Big Garden Birdwatch weekend noting the highest number of each bird species seen in their gardens or local outside space at any one time. They then have three weeks to submit their results to the RSPB, either online at www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch or in the post.

BRADGATE LIONS CLUB NEWS During the last few weeks we have held a Comedy & Magic Evening in Botcheston and we have conducted our usual ‘Children in Need’ bucket collections in the local pubs and restaurants around Markfield, Copt Oak and Ratby. Altogether these events raised over £500.00 for our charity account, which will be banked together with our earlier efforts this year, and hopefully our future fund raising receipts, to be allocated to various charities at the end of our financial year in May. During December we will be out with our ‘Santa Sleigh’, weather permitting, touring around the streets in Anstey, Kirby Muxloe and Ratby with the help of the local schools groups, the Scouts, and the Girls and Lads Brigade. Last year we had to cancel most of these collections due to the inclement weather, but we will be hoping for better things this time around. We will be also collecting charity funds with our ‘Christmas Prize Draw Baskets’ in the local hostelries. We have 12 of these in place, so don’t forget that if you see one of these on display behind the bar somewhere, to ask the staff if you may enter the draw, and help with our fund raising. Also, giving ‘Santa’ a helping hand, and dressed in the appropriate costume, we will be visiting some of the local schools and nurseries at their end of term parties, with gifts for the children. And just before the ‘big day’ we will be doing our annual tour of the wards at Glenfield Hospital, along with members of Groby Church Choir, with carols, cards and ‘pressies’ for the patients. As you will properly have gathered from the activities outlined above, we are in for a very busy, but fun time, and would really welcome some new faces to join our team, as members of the club, or as occasional volunteers to help at some of our collections etc. Next year we will be celebrating our 25 anniversary, during which time we have raised and donated over £150,00.00 to International, National and Local causes and in order to carry on with our work, we would welcome you to join us. We are incredibly grateful for the wonderfully kind and generous donation of £6500 from the Thurnby, Leicester Charnwood and Rothley & Soar Valley Lions Clubs.”
Mountsorrel Townswomen Guild are busy again with the run up to Christmas, some of our ladies together with the W.I. have been busy practicing for the Annual Village Carol Concert which was held in the Memorial Hall on the 10th December. Our Coffee morning held in the Library in September was well attended, many thanks to all who worked hard on the day and all who supported us. During October we were taken around the lovely Island of Madeira by Mr Shreeve a must for all you touristy people – Mr Shreeve has donated £12,090 to Rainbows giving his slide shows of the delightful places and scenery he has visited.
This sum was raised from a combined charity Golf Tournamount held at Beedles Lake Golf Club in September and, as in previous years, much thought was given to the charity which should receive the money and the local Charity “The Warning Zone” seemed to tick all the right boxes.
The educational centre, on Frog Island, teaches vital learning for life skills to Year 6 pupils and other vulnerable groups using interactive scenarios. Vital messages are combined in a single stimulating and memorable experience which helps to prepare youngsters for increased independence and their transition into early adolescence. Ms Rathour went on to say “Your generous donation will make a huge difference to our work in ensuring that every child in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland has the chance to learn about personal safety, risk, consequence and so much more.”
The competition of a picture of flowers was won by Brenda Chappell and second Sheila Golding The social get together, a knit and natter evening plus a quiz was our meeting the third week in the month. Well attended and a good night. November 7th “name that tune” proved to be a fun evening ending with tea, coffee and biscuits. Our last meeting before our Christmas party was Joe Round on the 21st November giving a make up demonstration – just in time for Christmas! Do come and join us – we meet in the Parish Rooms on Leicester Road on the 1st and 3rd Thursday in the month. We ended the year with our Christmas Buffett Party on the 4th December and the Carol Concert on Tuesday the 10th December in the Memorial Hall. Do come along and join us you will be most welcome.

The Hidden Side of CCTV NEW figures released by Charnwood Borough Council reveal how CCTV is helping in the fight against crime and keeping residents safe. Within the last five years the Council’s CCTV team has dealt with 140,000 incidents with the 184 cameras positioned across the Borough. Since 2008 the CCTV system within Charnwood has been used to support 4,956 Police prosecutions and supporting with 2,526 arrests. During the same period of time the team has also been involved with looking for more than 600 missing people and answered 7,866 out-of-hours calls to the Council offices. Councillor David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “Our CCTV team deals with a variety of incidents, 24 hours a day and these figures provide an insight into the invaluable work they carry out.” The Council’s car parks are monitored throughout the day and night by CCTV. Out-of-hours visitors experiencing difficulties will be assisted by the CCTV team and in the last five years 1,091 car park matters have been dealt with by the service.

GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY WINS Tuck Boxes for NATIONAL HERITAGE AWARD our troops in Afghanistan.
The Great Central Railway's half a million pound renovation project to revive "Loughborough's Crystal Palace" has triumphed at a national award ceremony. The restoration of the elegant glass, metal and wood station canopy, which is grade II listed and dates back to 1899, took three years to complete. Originally provided to protect Victorian travellers it is now ready for another century of service at the heritage line.
It picked up the first prize at the National Railway Heritage Awards (held on the 4th of December in London) in the station environment category. It faced stiff competition from two projects completed by Network Rail at Battersea Park and Horsham stations. Tony Sparks who led the project said, "It was a team effort involving people from every part of the railway to make sure the repairs to the canopy were completed to the highest standard. This award is just recognition of the hard work and a tribute to everyone who helped raise the money to do it! We're very proud to have won. A visit to Loughborough Central has been transformed. It is one of the largest stations on any UK heritage railway. We now have facilities which match the expectation of twenty first century travellers and a sparkling elegant roof over our head. Loughborough's Crystal Palace shines again!" The improvement works at Loughborough also saw passenger facilities refreshed, a lift installed for visitors using wheelchairs installed, cracked paving slabs repaired and a small exhibits museum redesigned. The National Railway Heritage Awards recognise work to preserve Britain's rail heritage. They encompass buildings, structures and signalling. The Great Central Railway has previously won awards for its signalling and the work carried out by volunteers at Rothley station. The judges praised the renovations at Loughborough station as "a heritage restoration of the highest order". The work was funded through a major public appeal and also grants from The Wolfson Foundation, The Pilgrim Trust, Biffaward, Garfield Weston and The Edith Murphy Foundation. Hundreds of hours of volunteer time was dedicated to recovering original wood and metal where possible or manufacturing completely new pieces. Specialist contractors and engineers were also employed on the project.

The county council has signed up to the British Sign Language (BSL) charter, a commitment to work with the British Deaf Association to consult deaf people regularly and to give them better access to information and services. Examples of changes that the council has introduced already include: • Sending emails about bus timetable changes to groups which support deaf people • Launching a plain English campaign • Helping groups for deaf people to get in touch with health organisations and district councils County council chairman Rosita Page, who launched the charter, said: “The county council is committed to continue our efforts to make a positive change for deaf people in Leicestershire.” Robin Ash, empowerment and campaigns officer at the British Deaf Association, said: “We warmly welcome the council’s decision to sign up to the two pledges of the BDA’s BSL charter, to ensure equal access and empower local deaf residents to access council services across Leicestershire.”
Too much on your plate this Christmas? A campaign called “Too much on your plate this Christmas?” has been launched to encourage food waste reduction over the festive season. The Leicestershire Waste Partnership is encouraging residents preparing for the festivities to be savvy with their shopping and learn to love their leftovers. Last year more than 74 million mince pies and two million turkeys were thrown away in the UK over Christmas, a time of year that sees food waste rise by around 80 per cent. In a bid to help families save money and drive down the amount of good grub being sent to landfill, a series of helpful hints and tips and tried and tested festive recipes using leftovers have been uploaded to www.lesswaste.org.uk/christmas Pam Posnett, chairman of The Leicestershire Waste Partnership which is made up of the county, district and borough councils, said: “Christmas is a time to eat drink and be merry and people are already starting to buy food ahead of parties, family meals and get-togethers. “However we know that the average family wastes around £680 of edible food each year, with a large proportion of that being thrown out over the festive season. “We want people to enjoy Christmas but also be aware of quantities of food they are buying – planning meals and writing a shopping list can help with this – as well as thinking about making tasty Christmas meals out of leftovers. “This will not only help reduce the amount of good food we are throwing away but will also help families save money at the same time.” More information is available at www.lesswaste.org.uk/christmas “Love your leftovers” festive recipes that can be downloaded from the site include Christmas pudding strudel, lemon and mustard seed brussel sprouts.

Crimestoppers takes a stand against domestic violence in Leicestershire Members of the Crimestoppers Leicestershire and Rutland volunteer committee were at Loughborough Market on Saturday 23 November 2013 to raise awareness about the different types of domestic abuse. The event highlighted a common misconception that domestic violence only affects women with men seen to be the offenders. Despite one in four women and one in six men being victims of domestic abuse at some point in their lives, the number of incidents reported to the police are very small. Not only do the victims not want to speak out, other people are sometimes reluctant to get involved, even if they suspect there is a problem. Social media will be used to raise awareness of Crimestoppers and encourage members of the public to give information anonymously on the 0800 555 111 number, or via the anonymous online form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org Crimestoppers Vice chair for the East Midlands committee, Sue Witts said: “We want to encourage people to give information on all crime and through Crimestoppers. This is done completely anonymously without having to give a statement or go to court. "Everyone should be aware that domestic abuse affects all sectors of society and is no respecter of age, sexuality or ethnicity. Appeal Launched After Biggest-Ever FLY-Tip in Charnwood AN investigation is underway after about 30 tons of waste was dumped in Charnwood – the biggest fly-tip ever recorded in the Borough. Charnwood Borough Council enforcement officers are appealing for witnesses after the mountain of waste was dumped at the Burrows Industrial Estate, East Goscote, some time between 10:30pm on December 11 and 7am on December 12, 2013. Chris Cary, the Council’s Senior Enforcement Officer, said: “When we turned up on the scene we were shocked. It was horrendous. We’ve never seen a fly-tip quite like it.” The rubbish pile contained wood, metal, plastic, childrens’ toys and a range of other household and commercial waste. Chris added: “From the size of it and other evidence recovered from the scene, we believe the waste has been in some sort of compacting equipment for a number of years and must have been brought in by a large vehicle and dumped. “Because it would have cost quite a bit of money to dispose of this legally, we think the offender has done this to save cash.” The Council is one of the most proactive local authorities for prosecuting fly-tippers in the East Midlands and is hoping someone may have seen something that could help trace the offenders. Councillor Jane Hunt, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, said: “I can’t quite believe that someone would have the audacity to dump this amount of waste in our Borough or anywhere other than a commercial tip for that matter. “Our annual Don’t Muck Around campaign aims to raise awareness about fly-tipping and how we do not tolerate it in Charnwood. We will pursue all lines of enquiry to bring the offenders in this case to justice as this kind of disregard for the environment is abhorrent.”

Charity searches for new recruits in Leicestershire and Rutland Number with dementia due to rise in Leicestershire and Rutland over next decade.

People in and around Leicestershire and Rutland are being urged to help Alzheimer’s Society to support people living with dementia. The charity is looking for volunteers for its Side by Side Befriending Service. Volunteers would need to give up to four hours a week to support people in the early stages of dementia. There are already thought to be 12000 people with the condition in Leicestershire and Rutland. By 2021, that number is likely to reach 16000. Suna Tilley from Alzheimer’s Society in Leicestershire and Rutland says: “The Side by Side service provides stimulation for people with dementia, which could be mental or physical. It may be companionship, such as sitting and having a cup of tea or it could be helping and joining them in an activity or hobby. The service is important because it reduces people’s feelings of isolation.“ “Volunteers will be matched with people with dementia who share similar interests. They will gain valuable experience and develop a sense of value by providing a much needed and worthwhile voluntary service.” The Leicestershire and Rutland Locality of Alzheimer’s Society provides ongoing training and support to all volunteers, who will be CRB checked and who should be over the age of 18.
