Judges from the Patient Experience Network said, “It is extremely encouraging to learn about national initiatives which demonstrate a real commitment to ensuring that the voice of the patient is continually being sought through a variety of different and innovative approaches.” The awards are the first of their kind in the UK and celebrate healthcare staff who are developing best practice around improving patient experiences.
“The teenage years can be a difficult time and we launched the service in 2013 because some young people say they are more likely to ask for support if they’ve got choices about how to get in touch” says Maggie Clarke, Senior Nurse Professional Lead for School Nursing at Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust. “We continue to offer weekly clinics in schools, for young people who prefer seeing a nurse in person. But the option of sending a text is available all the time. It’s about improving access to help for young people.”
Winners will be announced at the national awards finals and conference in Birmingham on 11 March 2015. The school nursing service is jointly funded by the city and county councils. “If we engage with young people in more innovative ways they’re more likely to take an interest in their own wellbeing,” says Ernie White, cabinet member for public health at Leicestershire County Council. “If we get healthy dialogue going with young people at an early stage, we’ll help them stay well for much longer as they grow older.”

Stephen and his wife Sharon will eventually live on the estate and are excited about discovering ways to serve their local community.
The charity has helped her son Billy, who suffered a cardiac arrest when he was 13 months old. The incident happened at the family home in Loughborough, in 2012. Charlotte said “I watched him go blue in my arms while the paramedics worked on him and I didn’t know whether or not he had died. The paramedic didn’t know whether to shock him as he was so small, but he did and called for an ambulance to take him to hospital. I wasn’t sure whether I would see him alive again” Billy was diagnosed with cardiacfibroma - a benign tumour which measured about 6cm by 4cm - growing on his heart and needs regular check-ups and assessment to make sure his heart is beating strongly. Now, Charlotte, with the help of her dad Rob Francis, 51, have created a charity album and recorded it with the help of producer David Moore at Studio 3Zero, in Birstall. Charlotte said “It’s made up of lullabies I sing to him at night and songs I sing with my guitar when he’s in the bath. There’s another song about going to the zoo, which I sang to him on the way to Twycross. They’re all very personal and mean something to us. “I hope we can raise some money for a very good cause” Gill Smart, Heart Link treasurer said “You would think newborn babies come with everything perfect but some times they don’t and parents don’t know what to do. So we look after the whole family, not just the children because everyone needs support. We rely on the public helping us out as it’s the only way we exist. We don’t get any funding at all.” Charlotte said “Heart Link gave us somewhere to sleep right next to the ward where Billy was and offered a lot of facilities to help Billy with his recovery and to make us feel at home. Teamed with the charity Keep the Beat and all the hard-working staff, they make the children’s heart ward, Ward 30, as comfortable and homely as they can.” Charlie and Robbie’s Heart Link CD, which has 5 songs on and costs £5 is available from Charlie by emailing charliefrancis@hotmail.co.uk

President Alison Porter of the Rotary Club of the Soar Valley welcomed Assistant District Governor John Dehnel and 75 Rotarians plus guests to the clubs 38th annual charter dinner held at Birstall Golf Club on Monday January 26th. The Toast Master was Rtn Eric Hill and speeches were given by Pres. Alison ,Asst Dist. Gov. John and President Elect Richard Hilliar. The main speaker was retired District Judge Mervyn Harris who gave us a very interesting and amusing talk about his experiences whilst serving on the Bench. A very enjoyable evening was had by all.
Can I detect a touch of malicious envy in the article by “An Impartial Rothley Resident” in your January issue ? The one thing the article certainly demonstrated was “Feminine Partiality” .
I came to Rothley some 10 years ago, having moved up from Northamptonshire where my wife and I resided for some 18 years. We are both originally from Leicester and, from an average middle class upbringing; we have worked hard, saved, and made some capital by our progressive house purchases. As a result, when we came back to Leicester shire on retirement, we looked for a semi-rural location, free from excess traffic and overcrowding. We were delighted when we found our current bungalow and invested most of our savings in purchasing it. Rothley had a reputation, at that time, as a quiet, quality, and desirable village. That was in 2004. Almost immediately housing developments began to encircle the village, filling all peripheral green space and eliminating community separation areas. We, personally, did not object to the initial developments which we saw as inevitable, considering the National housing situation. But then it carried on, and on, and on, until, in the words of Shakespeare, – “A Little More than Enough is By Far Too Much !” The total number of houses built, or to be built, immediately adjacent to Rothley is around 603 to which we can add a further 1,500 houses to be built immediately to the south of Rothley, and north of the A46. From this you can see my point. The developers are concentrating on the local land owners because all “Infrastructure” is already in place. If this is allowed to carry on, it will produce a “Linear City” from Leicester to Loughborough. Charnwood Borough is also allocated 6,000 houses as overspill from Leicester.

The recent announcement that NatWest is to close its Anstey Branch in March (along with Syston) prompted me to share some pictures drawn from the Anstey Millennium Collection. Banking in Anstey started at the end of the 19thC with the Northamptonshire Union Bank (1836-1920) responding to the needs of the rapidly growing Boot and Shoe industry and it’s workforce in the village. (Picture 898) shows the building in the Nook in 1920 when the Northamptonshire Union Bank merged with the National Provincial Bank (1836-1970) – Later (picture 900) c1961 together with the interior shot (picture 901) with a notice announcing the arrival of a Saturday banking service. At the same time that the Northamptonshire Union came to Anstey, the Westminster Bank (1834-1968) rented a front room of Eric and Adah Johnstone’s terraced cottage home at 44 Bradgate Road (picture 896) c1968 – this branch was only open once a week on payday Friday at 10am to noon and was manned by one cashier and a guard. July 1968 aw the merger of the Westminster (and closure of the Bradgate Road branch) with the National Provincial (picture 902) which became The National Westminster Bank and in turn today’s NatWest – (picture’s 903 and 904) show the interior in 1990.
Janet Elverstone and her husband Lewis, called me up to see if I’d like to come and look at a war artefact they’d discovered. Belonging to her uncle Arch. Barker who served in the Chindits, this artefact has got me quite excited!
We’ve all had, or will have the unenviable task of going through a deceased relative’s paperwork. It can be upsetting and disheartening, especially if they never liked to throw anything away! But one lucky Leicestershire resident recently discovered a gem whilst looking through her Uncles paperwork.

It’s a beautifully preserved, postcard sized book sent to Arch when he was out in India from the Anstey War Service League. Apparently HYHU\ VHUYLQJ RIÀFHU from Anstey was sent one of these little book for Christmas in 1944. The book contains lists of all the Anstey men and women serving with H.M Forces at home and overseas. It also has some beautiful illustrations, a story and a poem to keep the soldiers busy and remind them of home. For me one of the most wonderful additions to this book are the letters from the
people of Anstey to the serving soldiers. Messages from the Parish Council, Police Force, Fire Service, WI and Schools all serve to make this a very personal piece. Alice Smart writes as an Anstey mother and G. Greatorex as an Anstey Wife. Two beautiful letters are written from Betty Thurman and Michael Martin of Latimer Street School and it would be interesting to see if they or their relatives still live in Anstey. Snibston’s proposed closure date announced
Have your say on proposals for county waste sites
IT IS PROPOSED that Snibston will close to visitors on Friday, July 31st. Richard Blunt, cabinet member for museums, said: “I’m proposing that the museum, in its current form, will close on July 31st. I wanted to announce the likely date as soon as I could, so that staff, volunteers and visitors have as much notice as possible. I know that staff have been anxious to have some firm information about the date.
The council wants to hear people’s views on a variety of proposals to reduce costs, without having to close sites completely. Blake Pain, county cabinet member for waste, said: “The council needs to save £1.1 million from its household waste and recycling sites budget, as part of its overall £120 million savings.
RESIDENTS, charities and businesses can help shape the county council’s proposals to save £1.1 million at household waste and recycling sites.
“We have a range of ideas and we now want to hear people’s views on how they could work.” Proposals for waste sites include: • Restricting free use of the sites by those living outside of Leicestershire county
“At its last meeting, cabinet asked the director of adults and communities to draw up a programme to implement the closure and the detailed work to support this is in hand.
• Restricting free access to use of the sites by charities, parish councils and other groups
“I appreciate that the full council is likely to debate this issue on February 18th but I wanted to give an indicative date now and I’ll provide an updated statement, following the meeting.”
• Reducing site opening times
• Restricting free disposal of non-household waste such as bricks, rubble and other DIY waste
The proposed date was chosen to link in with the end of the school year in Leicestershire and other parts of the Midlands.
At the moment, the council spends £27.4 million per year on waste and recycling and it needs to reduce that figure by £4.9 million by 2018/19. Alongside proposed changes to household waste and recycling sites, the council is also reviewing recycling and reuse credits. Around £120,000 is paid each year to approximately 40 charity and community groups that collect household waste for reuse and recycling.
Earlier this month, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet agreed to close the current venue. If nothing was done, the cost to the council has been estimated at £900,000 per year.
Charities and community groups will be directly engaged with to shape proposals to ensure they are supported in the most effective way. Options for making savings could include only paying credits for materials where other recycling or reuse facilities are not available - e.g. mattresses or carpet.
The decision came after the council and an independent assessor judged the Friends of Snibston’s plans to retain the current venue were unviable.

The Century Theatre and the country park will remain open after this date. The historic pithead buildings, which are a scheduled ancient monument, will continue to be maintained.

The Green Place News Refurbishment news
As you may be aware, we are improving the café and shop so they’ll be more inviting as well as financially sustainable. So far the whole of the café area has been emptied and some of the brickwork sandblasted to create interesting feature walls. The floor is being levelled ready for the installation of underfloor heating, which will be powered by a new woodburning stove. The floor will then be tiled throughout to maximise heat transfer, the walls will be insulated and some windows and doors will be replaced to improve energy efficiency. We are excited but also daunted by all the changes (and expenditure), and we hope you will like the new look.
Re-opening – March (?) We all know that any sort of building work always take longer than you expect! We hope to re-open on Saturday 21st March, but this is obviously subject to the progress of the refurbishment work. Warning about back-of-the-van mattress sales
Trading Standards officers are warning residents to be wary of cold callers selling mattresses door-todoor. Officers have had reports of cold callers selling cheap, fake mattresses across the county from the back of vans. The mattresses that have been sold in Wigston, Glenfield, Oadby and Mountsorrel have the fake logos of wellknown manufacturers and retailers. David Bull, head of the county council’s Trading Standards Service, said: “Our investigations have found that some mattresses, being sold on the door step, did not comply with the British Safety standard.

The BVCC Round up Birstall Village Cricket Club are readily preparing for the new season. We have gained some new players to the club and have also welcomed back some old members. The 1st XI are looking forward to the challenges they will face this season with their promotion to Division 4. Jon Gaydon will again take on the challenge of 1st XI team captain with Ashley Coulthard supporting as 2nd XI team captain. BVCC has made the exciting decision to make this a huge season in regards to pushing the club forward through making improvements to the clubhouse and facilities, getting involved in community initiatives and rebuilding our Junior club set up. ROTARY SUPPORTS MOUNTSORREL YOUTH CAFE President Alison Porter of The Rotary Club of the Soar Valley welcomed local MP Nicky Morgan and the Mayor and Mayoress of Charnwood to the Mountsorrel Youth Cafe on Saturday January 24th. A previously installed engraved plaque was unveiled by Nicky Morgan outlining the Rotary Club's involvement and Nicky gave a short address welcoming everyone to the cafe and thanking the Club for its donation to update the kitchen equipment. The Rotary Club together with Rotary Foundation (Rotary's own International Charity) gave a grant of £1000 to update the kitchen equipment to enable it to become a community based cafe open to all ages rather than just a place for the village young people to meet. The cafe will now open Monday – Friday 9am to 2pm providing lunches and light snacks for all as well as its usual evening activities. Following the official opening Nicky and the Mayor and Mayoress joined over 20 senior citizens for a three course lunch. In the next few weeks a party of young people led by Graham Lloyd the Cafe Youth Leader will join the Rotary Club members on a litter pick exercise around the village under the Keep Britain Tidy Campaign. Richard Blunt, the county council’s cabinet member for adult learning, said: “We’re offering a variety of enjoyable courses which we believe can have a positive impact on lives. “There’s the chance to learn useful new skills with hundreds of part-time courses to choose from with some of them leading to a recognised qualification.” Among the courses available include tips on finance, how to improve confidence, cookery, art, writing and pottery classes as well as health and wellbeing interests such as Pilates, ballet and yoga. There’s also entry into a free prize draw when adult learners recommend a friend and a chance, if successful, to win back course tuition fees.
