June 2013

Ratby Primary School Summer Fayre On Saturday 8th June we had our annual summer fair, organised and run by our fantastic PSA. As well as traditional stalls (after all, it wouldn't be a summer fair without a 'hook-a-duck' and a tombola) there was a range of new attractions. This year, for the first time, we had pony rides! These proved to be a huge success and we would like to say a big thank you to Oaklands Riding School of Ratby who donated their time (and their horses) free of charge. Crowds were also entertained by martial art demonstrations and performances from the school Glee Club and local dance school, Dance Sensations. Everyone who attended had a fabulous time, thanks to the hard work and planning of Mark, Julie and all of the other devoted members of our PSA.

We are the Champions! On Friday 7th June boys from Year 5 and Year 6 represented the school in the Marconi Football Cup at Groby College. Alongside Ratby Primary School, there were teams from Kirby Muxloe, Elizabeth Woodville, Lady Jane Grey and Martinshaw. After several well-played matches, both our Year 5 and Year 6 teams made it into their final. Unbelievably, both matches went into extra time and were won when both of our teams managed to score in the dying minutes of the game! It was an incredibly exciting afternoon and an amazing double result - well done boys, you've done Mr. Barber (and the rest of the school) proud!

Ratby play group Hello from us all at Ratby play group. We are a volunteer run parent, baby and toddler group, meeting every Wednesday morning during term time. The playgroup is held in Ratby village hall starting after the school drop off at 9am until 11am. We are a friendly group offering a safe environment for parents, grandparents or carers and their children to come and play, learn, catch up with friends and make new ones. We encourage creative play with craft activities each month relevant to seasonal celebrations. We recently had our Easter party where all the children made Easter masks before going on an exciting (if a little soggy!) Easter egg hunt in the park. All the little ones (and big ones!) enjoy a sing song at the end of each session. Reverend Peter joins us once a month with stories and to lead the singing!

6,000 copies distributed to homes and businesses in Ratby Kirby Muxloe and L.F.E.

On July 10th we will be holding our end of term party. Mr Chuckle Chops the very friendly clown will be joining us again for balloon making, magic tricks and lots of giggles. He was a great success last year and we are all looking forward to him joining us again!

Due to the new school intake in September, we will be losing some valuable commitee members. We cannot run without volunteers. Any help you can offer, be it in the kitchen, on the door or with setting up or tidying away, would be greatly appreciated.

Are you a patient at Forest House Medical Centre on Park Drive? Do you want to influence the services that the practice offers now and in the future? Well, come along to the Forest House Patient Participation Group meetings. Patient meetings are open to all registered patients. They are a two way opportunity for the practice to hear the views of patients and for patients to hear first-hand about future improvements at the surgery. The meetings are informal and the PPG is quite independent of the practice. They are well attended and are held on a Monday evening at 6:15pm for just one hour. The dates of the next meeting are: 15 July - 2 September - 14 October - 2 December - 13 January 2014 Patient meetings regularly have guest speakers talking on subjects like repeat prescriptions, recycling medicines, commissioning of services and about Healthwatch Leicestershire. Each year, the patients’ group conducts a patient survey. This year we asked patients about appointments, the ‘walk-in service’, the medical centre, repeat prescriptions and about the quality of care they receive from the surgery. 95% of patients said they were satisfied or very satisfied with the care they received. The surgery uses the result of this survey to form an action plan for the year ahead. You can find out more about this year’s survey, together with our Annual Report to patients on the PPG webpage http://www.foresthousemedicalcentre.co.uk Patients can also make and cancel appointments online here too. If you haven’t got a login, please ask the receptionist on your next visit. This year we helped patients at the former Hunters Lodge surgery transfer to Forest House. Forest House practice has responded well, given the constraints of the building, to the challenges that additional patients have brought. Initiatives like Saturday morning opening and additional doctors, have helped relieve the pressure on the surgery. The Doctors at Forest House Medical Centre, who have registered approximately an extra 2500 patients during February and March, have sent a letter of application to NHS England (Leicestershire and Lincolnshire) to open the surgery on Warren Lane, as a branch surgery. They will post any news regarding the application on their practice website www.foresthousemedicalcentre.co.uk and on notices in the waiting room. We hope you can come along to the next meeting. You will be made very welcome. We want to hear your thoughts about the surgery. If you need more information or are interested in joining us then please ask a receptionist or email the group at foresthse.patient@nhs.net

Rtby Primary School Coronation Medals On Friday 7th June Mrs Joyce, chair of the Parish Council, came into school to present the children with commemorative medals to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Last year the children received medals to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, so they now have the complete set – a wonderful keepsake to treasure. The children would like to thank the parish council for their kind gift.

Children aged 4-12 years can take part in a spine-tingling exploration and hair-rasing adventure in ‘ Creepy House’, from 6th July until 7th September. The challenge is to read six books and explore the ‘Awful Upstairs’, the ‘Frightful First Floor’ and the ‘Sinister Cellar’. Goodies include a fold-out Creepy House poster, stickers, key ring, a certificate and medal. All children taking part are also entitled to free admission into Snibston Discovery Museum and Bosworth Battlefield by showing their Creepy House sticker poster at reception (one child per full–paying adult). On the 28th May we ran the Be Bright Be Safe Be Seen campaign in Kirby Muxloe at the Library car park where we gave those attending a free bicycle health check and hi visibility rucksacks. Given the bad weather it was still a good turnout. Finally, Community Speed Watch will be returning to Kirby Muxloe in July. If you wish to help with taking action against speeding motorists in the village then please email duane.wright@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk

Saturday 29th June 11-4pm Sunday 30th June 12 - 4pm

Supporting them is Hinckley and Bosworth's Executive Member for Housing Cllr Michael Mullaney, he said "The response from the public when the group has been out speaking to tenants has been very Cllr Michael Mullaney and Lynda Gibbs from Together for tenants positive. Together for Tenants is a way of building two way communication between the Council and local tenants to improve the housing service even further."

SPECIAL

During May we have seen a rise in theft from motor vehicles, the main target being work vans. Although we have managed to arrest suspects for some of these offences I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to keep their vehicles as secure as possible. Removing SAT NAVs and anything else of value when leaving the car unattended is strongly advised. Emptying your glove compartment and opening it shows that you have no property in the vehicle, making it a less tempting target for any passing thief. Wiping any mark off of your windscreen will also remove the evidence that you have something worth stealing inside. Removing the tools from your vehicle is also the best way to ensure they do not get stolen but parking your vehicle with the rear doors up against a wall will prevent an easy break in.

Kirby Muxloe Parish Plan Update June 2013 The Parish Plan group continues to meet regularly and village improvements are being seen. With financial help from the Parish Council, a number of new bus information casings have been put up at various locations in the village. It is anticipated that the timetable information displayed will be regularly updated as it is published. Thanks are also due to Arriva and the County Council for their help this project. Requests for grants for a variety of projects have been submitted and are being considered whilst the Wildlife and Environmental Group (WEG) is beginning to put down roots. Regular meetings are being held and work is continuing on the establishment of a butterfly and bee sensory garden. Other items discussed have been the possibility of the provision of a community orchard, guided walks in the village and the provision of bird and bat boxes at selected locations. All residents are welcome to attend these meetings. The next Parish Plan meeting will be on Monday 1 July whilst the next WEG meeting is to be on Monday 8 July both in the Parish Council Office, Station Road at 7:00pm.

Council supports 100 first-time buyers More than 100 homes have been bought by first-time buyers, thanks to support from Leicestershire County Council. The council has been able to help 106 people obtain low-cost mortgages, totalling £12 million. Last September, the county council agreed to lend Lloyds TSB £10 million, enabling it to offer low-cost mortgages to up to 400 first-time buyers. Under the scheme, buyers have to find a deposit of just five per cent. Today, the council revealed that the first £4 million of its investment has: • Led to 106 house purchases being completed, with mortgages worth £12 million • Led to 182 mortgage applications being approved, worth £20 million County council leader Nick Rushton said: “I’m delighted that more than 100 first-time buyers have got a home, thanks to support from the county council. “We know first time buyers are struggling, so it makes sense to lend the bank some of our reserves, to help them get on the property ladder.

Kirby and LFE Well done to so many Kirby and LFE residents who responded magnificently to the annual house to house collection for Christian Aid! Dozens of volunteers braved the cold and wet conditions to deliver the little red envelopes and then to return to collect them some days later. It is always a difficult thing to knock on doors and invite a contribution - and often just as hard in these hard economic times to make that donation towards someone else's basic needs. When all was counted, Co-ordinator Mary Mozley was amazed to discover that together we had raised a fantastic £4,665.15 ... very close to the sum raised last year! What a tremendous result, and what a worthwhile effort with everyone doing their bit!

Ratby Christian Aid Week in Ratby: May 12-18th 2013 Each year a group of willing volunteers from ‘Churches Together’ in Ratby deliver envelopes and collect donations in aid of Christian Aid. This year, despite the hard times many households are facing financially, a fabulous total of £1943.27 was collected throughout the village. Every penny of the money raised goes towards transforming people’s lives, providing ways for communities around the world to help themselves.

Did I read that sign right:

“This helps people into homes, boosts the economy and enables the council to get its money back, with interest, from the bank.”

TOILET OUT OF ORDER. PLEASE USE FLOOR BELOW

Carl Knott, 27 and Zoe Scott, 25, have bought a house west of Leicester through the scheme. Zoe said: “We were finding dealing with letting agents frustrating and dreamed of having a home of our own. However, with two young children, saving for a deposit seemed impossible.

In a London department store: BARGAIN BASEMENT UPSTAIRS

“We went online to find out more about this scheme and things moved really quickly from there.” Stephen Noakes, mortgage director at Lloyds TSB, said: “With the launch of Lend a Hand in Leicestershire, we’re making the housing market more accessible to more people. “Helping people to buy their first home is crucial in achieving and maintaining a sustainable housing market.” How the scheme works: • The council lends money from its reserves to the bank • The money allows the bank to offer mortgages of up to £142,500, reducing the size of deposit that first-time buyers have to find to just five per cent • After five years, the bank repays the money, plus interest, to the council For further details, or to apply for a mortgage, see staff at any Lloyds TSB branch in Leicestershire. For interviews with first-time buyers, please contact the Lloyds TSB press office on 0207 356 1511.

Armed Forces Day Service and Parade

Saturday 22nd June 2013 The public are invited to show their support for service men and women of all generations by witnessing a parade in Leicester on Saturday 22nd June. The parade is being held to celebrate and raise awareness of the past and continuing role of the military, as part of the nation’s Armed Forces Day celebrations. In Leicester this is being held a week before the national celebrations as Notting ham is hosting the national event on Saturday 29th June.

People from the city and counties of Leicestershire and Rutland are encouraged to watch the parade of Royal British Legion and Veterans' Association Standards, service personnel, veterans and cadets as it makes its way through the streets of Leicester. The parade, which will number more than 300, will be led by the Seaforth Highlanders Regimental Association Band. Royal British Legion County Chairman, David Atterbury, said: “This is an opportunity to show our appreciation and support for the men and women of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces who are selflessly and courageously serving our nation in dangerous and volatile parts of the world, and our veterans who have served with distinction in past years." There will be a service in the cathedral before the parade, which will be attended by those who will form the parade. They will be joined by civic dignitaries and community representatives for the service which will be led by the Dean of Leicester, the Very Reverend David Monteith, with Bishop Tim Stevens preaching. The service will also be attended by the Lord-Lieutenants of Leicestershire and Rutland, the Lord Mayor of Leicester, the Chairman of the County Council, and other civic dignitaries. The parade will form up at approximately 11.30 a.m. and will make its way behind the pipes and drums of the Seaforth Highlanders, along High Street to the Clock Tower - where the LordLieutenant, Lady Gretton, will take the salute – and then along Humberstone Gate. There will be ample opportunity to witness the parade of service personnel and veterans as it makes its way through the City Centre. For further information about the service please contact the Cathedral’s Precentor, Rev’d Canon Dr Johannes Arens on 0116 261 5364.

The Kirby Players The Kirby Players would like to thank all those who supported our last production of the Old Time Music Hall. We were delighted that you joined in our choruses, hissed and booed our villain in the melodrama and waved your flags in our patriotic finale. We hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did and that we can now tempt you to visit our next production. As we cleared away props, tidied dressing rooms and ‘stripped’ sets, it certainly reminded of us what was to come next. Yes, you’ve guessed it ‘Calendar Girls’ is taking to the Kirby stage. The show is cast and rehearsals are already underway and we are finding that this show makes us laugh, cry and is shamelessly sentimental. The critic in the daily mail wrote of this production ....well worth a date in your calendar. Please do that, the dates are Tuesday 30th July to Saturday 3rd August at the Kirby Muxloe Village Hall, box office 07804 0435235 or email tickets@kirbyplayers.co.uk.

Ratby Local History Group Ratby Local History Group: will lead two guided walks to Bury Camp and Old Hays, Ratby at 2pm on Sundays, 21 and 28 July 2013, as part of the National Archaeological Festival. The walks will cover 3 miles of moderately hilly countryside and will take 3 hours. No dogs are allowed on Bury Camp, where care must be taken on the ramparts. Meet at the Plough Inn, Burroughs Road, Ratby. Cost £2 per head. Children and those in full time education free.

Have your say on transport consultations People are being urged to voice their views on proposed changes to financial support for transport and travel arrangements in the county. Leicestershire County Council is hoping the changes will enable it to save around £1.3m per year. The council is consulting on proposals to no longer provide subsidies on discretionary aspects of school transport and concessionary travel that it is not required to provide. Proposals for changes to funding for transport to schools include: • Withdrawing the subsidy for pupils aged 16+ and either no longer providing transport or charging the full cost (Note: the full cost of this to the local taxpayer works out at £173 per student, as parents currently are only charged £240 (with subsidy). The proposal is to charge the full cost of £425 pa) • Withdrawing the subsidy for transport to faith and voluntary aided schools and either no longer providing transport or charging the full cost (Note: unsubsidised rate per student for this is £640, LCC currently charges £240 (rises

to £252 13/14)- costs local taxpayer £388 per student, per year). The English National Concessionary Travel Scheme entitles elderly and disabled residents to free travel on local bus services between 9.30am and 11pm Monday to Friday, and at any time at weekends and bank holidays. (Note: LCC is reverting to the statutory minimum required by law. We are not withdrawing the scheme in its entirety). Leicestershire County Council currently offers the following additional discretionary concessions, which it is proposing to withdraw: • Free travel for disabled people before 9.30am and after 11pm on Monday to Friday • Free travel after 11pm for elderly passengers on Monday to Friday • Vouchers, worth £33 per year for residents with disabilities who cannot use conventional bus services, and for residents who live over 800 metres from an hourly bus service •

Subject to approval from Cabinet, it is anticipated that any changes to school transport will come into effect from September 2014, and changes to concessionary travel from September 2013. NOTE The concessionary travel consultation does not apply to people who receive assistance with transport as part of a community care assessment. If the proposals go ahead, around £1m is likely to be saved per year through changes to school transport, and around £300,000 per year through changes to concessionary travel.

Sacheverell Way Lights. I attended the County Councils Highways Forum at Hinckley on 5th June where I presented the communities petition to the Chairman. I addressed the forum expressing the communities concerns regarding the lack of street lighting along Sacheverell Way at night and in the dark winter morning when children walk to school. I also raised several other issues and residents concerns since the lights had been turned off. I will now be requesting that the residents re-consultation promised to me prior to the election is commenced as soon as possible. It is important that residents take part in this consultation and tell the County Council why they need these lights back on. You can rest assured I will always work on behalf of residents and have their interests at heart. I will keep residents updated on this issue.

Stamford Street, Ratby I have been made aware that there is a problem with the drains in Stamford Street. This problem would appear to occur only when we have heavy rain. It would appear the sewerage is then left on the street. It appears there could be problem with the sewers when we suffer bursts of heavy rain. I have spoken with officers from the County Council and they will be checking the drains out in the next week or two and will be checking on the sewer flow. Once they have completed this inspection they will then liaise with Severn Trent if it is found the sewers are at fault. I would like to thank you all for your support and to remind you all that I am only a phone call or email away. Home 0116 239 4336 Mobile 0780 858 5825 Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com

FiLMREVIEW Man of Steel - 12A

Man of Steel is a visually stunning reboot of the Superman franchise with an exciting director at the helm. Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) is a young journalist on a mission, a mission that he has been aware of since as a young boy he showed feats of amazing strength. Having been sent into exile from a dying planet, he now needs to decide whether he is going to use his powers to protect his new planet, Earth, from the onslaught of villains, some of them out to get him in particular. Man of Steel is arguably the greatest of all Superman movies..

Despicable Me 2 - U Despicable Me 2 is the follow-up to the smash-hit original with all the Minion action you could dream of. Gru (Steve Carell) is continuing to bring up his orphans, something that has brought out a softer side. So when he is recruited by the Anti Villain League to help eliminate a new villain with his insider knowledge of how a villain thinks, he’s all for it, especially as it means he will be let loose on a stash of brilliant new weapons. And with the Minions helping out, what could possibly go wrong? Despicable Me 2 is a visually brilliant return to the madness.

Health Matters in yourLOCAL... Pregnancy Health and Medication Hello and welcome to Health Matters from the Village Pharmacy Kirby Muxloe. As my wife is now due to have our second baby I thought it would be nice to write a little about pregnancy health. At the time of writing this my wife is 1 week overdue and when the article is published we should hopefully have our second bundle of joy.

Whetstone Recycling and Household Waste Site will open an hour later from Monday, June 10 while refurbishment work takes place.

Nationally there has been a baby boom (I am happy to have contributed to this). The latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show the highest birth rate figures since 1973. This has caused a rise in products marketed for parents-to-be and has created a minefield of information relating to healthy pregnancies which can be overwhelming. Most crucially, to maintain a healthy pregnancy is to have the right diet and avoid smoke, alcohol and drugs. A healthy diet during pregnancy has shown to reduce the risks of your child developing diabetes and heart disease later in life. According to a paper published in December 2012 in the Nutrition Bulletin, women do not get enough calcium, magnesium, iron, iodine, selenium, potassium and vitamin D during pregnancy. The correct levels can be easily achieved by taking supplements that can provide the additional nutrients if needed. If you are thinking of taking a multi vitamin make sure it does not contain Vitamin A (Retinol), as too much can harm your baby. Vitamin A is also found in Liver, so avoid eating liver too. A supplement which is a must have during the first trimester (0 – 13 weeks) is Folic Acid at a dose of 400 micrograms daily. Studies have shown that this reduces the risk of Spinal Bifida (a condition where the baby’s spine does not close properly). In certain circumstances a larger dose is required of 5 milligrams (5000 micrograms) daily. If you have health problems such as epilepsy, diabetes, coeliacs etc. talk to your GP as you may require the higher dose of Folic Acid. During pregnancy many women experience morning sickness due to increased hormone levels; even the Duchess of Cambridge had morning sickness, albeit a more severe version called hyperemesis gravidarum (excessive sickness and vomiting in pregnancy). If you cannot keep any food or drink down at all, you should see your GP as there are safe prescription medications to take to relieve the sickness. Other things although not evidence based that you can try include: Eating little and often, Avoid spicy or fried food, Eat foods containing ginger, Applying pressure on the wrist under the thumb.

Leicestershire County Council is re-developing the site to provide a modern layout with improved access and parking. Opening the waste site at 9am instead of 8am will allow more time for waste bays to be cleared in preparation for the general public and trades people. The site will continue to close as normal at 8pm. they interfere with blood clotting. If you are already taking regular prescribed medication from your GP, it is important to notify your GP or Midwife straightaway as the drugs may not be safe and an alternative may need to be prescribed. It is best to avoid medication if possible during pregnancy, however there are a number of medicines which have been used for many years and are considered to be safe. These include: Paracetamol or Codeine for pain. Lactulose, Senna, or Fybogel for constipation. Simple Linctus, Honey and Lemon, or Steam Inhalation for coughs and colds. Sodium Cromoglicate for Hay fever. Gaviscon or Antacids (without sodium) for heartburn and indigestion. If you suffer from any of the above conditions, come to the Village Pharmacy, Kirby Muxloe and we can advise the safest medication to take, and if needs be refer you to your GP or midwife if necessary. There are many drugs which you should avoid, the most common ones are: Anticoagulants such as warfarin. Painkillers such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Diclofenac and Naproxen. Cough or cold medication containing Ephedrine or Pseudoephedrine. Hay fever medication containing Antihistamines.

With sickness and vomiting it can be hard to maintain a healthy diet as vitamin levels are depleted. Vitamin supplements are worth taking to improve levels. Pop into the Village Pharmacy, Kirby Muxloe, to talk to our highly trained pharmacist to see which supplements would best suit you.

If you are suffering from Hay Fever, Pain, Coughs, Colds, Heartburn, Indigestion or Constipation during your pregnancy or would like any further information on anything mentioned in this article call into the Village Pharmacy, Kirby Muxloe, or call us on 0116 2387353. Our highly trained pharmacists are always happy to help.

With regards to the safety of medication during pregnancy, it is important to let all health professionals know that you are pregnant straightaway as simple over-the-counter medication such as Ibuprofen or Aspirin can be harmful to your baby as

Temporary change to Whetstone waste site opening times

It is anticipated that the later opening time will help to reduce the frequency of larger vehicles entering the site during the day to collect waste, as well as allowing other traffic to flow more freely and helping to reduce queues. Blake Pain, lead member for waste management, said: “The changes at Whetstone will really benefit users in the future as they will see improved parking and better access to the site and the skips. “However, in the meantime we would ask people to bear with us while this work takes place. “This slightly later opening time should hopefully mean that traffic will be able to flow more freely through the site, thanks to the clearance work being carried out first thing.” Whetstone waste site will continue to remain open for the duration of the work, which is due to be completed in the autumn. The council is urging the public to use the site at off-peak times, which is early morning and late evening, to avoid queuing in busy periods or, if possible, to use alternative sites at Oadby, Lutterworth and Barwell. To find more information about recycling and household waste sites, please call 0116 305 0001 or visit www.leics.gov.uk/waste

As summer starts to heat up, it’s inevitable that we should turn our attention to the garden. Clear the kids’ toys off the patio, fire up the barbie and invite a few friends over for a garden party. Having been neglected over the winter months, however, your garden may need some attention before it’s fit for hosting a spot of al fresco dining. If your patio’s become tarnished and weathered, your first task will be to restore it to its former glory. Sediment and winter algae can take their toll, obscuring paving stones, driveways and kids’ play areas beneath a thick layer of accumulated dirt. The simplest solution is to enlist the services of a professional pressurewashing company.

Council backs Fit for Work service Leicestershire County Council has stepped in to protect a service that helps people return to work after illness. The council and the county’s two clinical commissioning groups are investing £120,000 in the Fit for Work service, following the end of Government funding. Leicestershire Fit for Work is a notfor-profit service that works with local GPs and patients, to support people with illnesses to remain in or return to work. The scheme was so successful that more than 70 per cent of people who used it over the last year returned to work. It was seen as a national exemplar and the basis for the creation of a national service, which is due to launch next year. Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet has agreed to fund the service for the next year, after the Department for Work and Pensions ceased funding Fit for Work last month. A county council spokesman said: “The council and the clinical commissioning groups have decided to invest in Fit for Work over the next year, so that it can continue to operate and support people until the new, national scheme is launched.” Individuals who are on long term sickness absence can by referred into the service through their GP and details of the service can be found at www.leicesterfit4work.org.uk

Apply for £6m WWI funding, urges local councillor Cllr Michael Mullaney Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Bosworth, which includes Ratby, is urging local communities to apply for the new £6m First World War: then and now fund, which the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has launched. HLF is making at least £1m available per year until 2019 to provide grants of between £3,000 and £10,000. The money will enable groups across the UK to explore, conserve and share their First World War heritage and deepen their understanding of the impact of the conflict. Communities can apply for grants for a variety of different projects, which could include: • Researching, identifying and recording local heritage • Creating a community archive or collection • Developing new interpretations of heritage through exhibitions, trails, smartphone apps, etc. • Researching, writing and performing creative material based on heritage sources • Conservation of war memorials Commenting, Cllr Michael Mullaney said: “The First World War had an unprecedented impact on communities, with so many young men leaving for the front and many not coming back. Few people are alive now who can give us a first-hand account of this period but the legacy they have left behind can still be felt and seen. “The Heritage Lottery Fund will allow our communities to mark the centenary. I want to encourage those who want to commemorate the centenary to get in touch with the HLF and see if they can tap into this new fund. “This anniversary will be a poignant time for local people. I look forward to working with different groups to bring the stories from that time alive and preserve our heritage for future generations.”

BOOK REVIEW

I Funny by James patterson Jamie Grimm is a middle schooler on a mission: he wants to become the world's greatest stand-up comedian - even if he always seems to 'choke' in the spotlight. When Jamie finds out about a contest called the Funniest Kid on the Planet, he knows it's time to face his fears and enter. But are the judges rewarding him out of pity because he happens to be in a wheelchair, like his bullying cousin Stevie suggests? And will Jamie ever share the secret of his troubled past - and reason for his disability instead of hiding behind his comedy act? In this highly illustrated book that's as heartfelt as it is hilarious, James Patterson dishes out heaps of jokes that will have readers rolling on the floor and cheering for more.

Borough Councillors Report Cllr Ozzy O’Shea Tel 0116 2394336 or 07808585825 Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com Council Offices Set To Move The new Council Offices or home of public services in Hinckley, The Hinckley Hub, is set to open fully to the public on Monday 17 June 2013. The 41,000 sq ft office development on the corner of Hawley Road and Rugby Road in Hinckley will house staff of the Borough Council, allowing it to vacate its current accommodation in Argents Mead and at Florence House, as well as providing office space for other partner organisations. Leicestershire County Council will take 7,000 sq ft of space in the new development and Hinckley’s Job Centre Plus will relocate there later this year. The Hinckley Hub will enable all organisations sharing the accommodation to save money by sharing its facilities and running costs, as well as providing more effective co-ordination of services with the partner agencies, for the benefit of people living and working in the borough. Leicestershire County Council’s involvement in the project is part of its office strategy to save up to £850,000 per year by having fewer but better offices. All opening hours and telephone numbers are unchanged by the office move. Visitors can drop in to the Hinckley Hub to see an adviser about any council service just as they could at the Argents Mead offices. This includes, for example, advice and information on: benefits, housing, council tax and planning. All Council meetings will take place in the Hinckley Hub and will be open to the public. There is short stay car parking for up to two hours free of charge in the Hinckley Hub public car park behind the building. Visitors should simply take a free ticket from the machine

and display it in their car. Entrance to the car park is from Hawley Road. There is also space available to park motor bikes and bicycles as well as designated spaces for disabled (blue) badge holders and for parents with young children. Meanwhile, the former council offices in Argents Mead will close for the final time at 4.30pm on Friday 14 June. The former offices will be demolished later this summer in order to make way for the borough’s new leisure centre. Ratby Primary School News.... Welcome New Joiners It’s that time of year again. Just as we’re getting ready to say a sad farewell to our children in Year 6, we have the excitement of meeting the children who will be joining our Foundation Stage in September.

Knitting Update

We would like to say a huge thank you to all of the community knitters that have been sending in ‘Fish-and-Chip’ jumpers for the African babies appeal. The response, once again, has been amazing! We are hoping to send them off at the end of this term, so would ask that any remaining jumpers are sent into school by Friday 5th July.

Our next project is to knit little hats for Innocent Smoothies. During the winter months several of the major supermarkets will be selling the smoothies – complete with wooly hats – and 25p from each sale will go directly to Age UK. The hats are quick and easy to make, and the children in Knitting Club are loving making them. As part of a programme of induction activities, parents were invited to attend a welcome evening on Tuesday 4th of June. This was a chance for Mrs Anstey and Mrs Savage to welcome the parents to our school and let them have a chance to look around the fantastic facilities that we offer. Before the end of term, these parents will also have the opportunity to attend workshops to explain how we approach teaching numeracy and literacy in the Foundation Stage. We can’t wait to welcome all of our new children in September, the only problem we have is persuading our current Foundation Stage children to move on!

Anne Fine’s Literacy Lab Recently children in Year 3 and Year 4 completed an author study. As part of their literacy lessons, we looked at the life and work of Leicester-born author Anne Fine. Anne Fine was previously the Children’s Laureate and was the winner of the Leicestershire Children’s Book Prize, 2012.

A selection of patterns for the hats can be found in the community section of our school website (www.ratbyprimary.co.uk) but you can be as creative as you like, and come up with your own designs also. Any completed hats can be left at the school office.

RATBY’S GOT Following weeks of hard work and practise, the school and families were treated to a music show on 6th and 7th of June. The school offers a range of after school and extra curricular clubs for our budding performers; and Choir, Guitar Club, Glee Club, Street Dance Club and brass players came together to show just how talented they are. The children clearly loved taking part, and it was lovely to see them feeling so proud of their achievements and having the chance to shine in front of their families and friends. For many of the children involved, this was the first time they had performed on a stage – but we have a feeling that it won’t be the last time.

The children were so inspired by the project, that several of them took the opportunity to attend Anne Fine’s Literacy Lab at Loughborough Town Hall Theatre on Saturday 1st June. They were able to listen to Anne talking about her work and ask her questions, before taking part in a creative writing session. Lucy (pictured here with Anne Fine) said that she had a brilliant time and, who knows, maybe Ratby Primary School will be producing the next generation of Children’s Laureates

Successful year for Discounted Advance National Trading Standards Forest Wood Fair Tickets Now Available To Purchase

Seizing £700,000 of fake goods, securing 18 convictions and cracking down on under-age alcohol sales are among Trading Standards' highlights for the last year. Between April 2012 and March this year, Leicestershire County Council's Trading Standards service:

• Seized approximately 40,000 items of counterfeit goods such as clothing, watches and digital media valued at £728,845. • Brought 18 cases of unfair trading practices before the courts, all of which resulted in convictions. Fines and costs awarded totalled £28,650. • Obtained formal agreements from a further 22 businesses to stop a variety of unfair trading practices • Took enforcement action following five cases involving the sale of alcohol to under 18s. This saw more stringent alcohol licensing to conditions to be applied, which avoided the need to make applications for ‘licence reviews’ by the appropriate district or borough council licensing committee • Confiscated £170,000 from offenders under the Proceeds of Crime Act • Provided free advice and guidance to 1,195 local and national businesses trading within the County, to help them comply with their legal responsibilities. Pam Posnett, cabinet member for Trading Standards, said: “Trading Standards has been doing some fantastic work, helping businesses to trade fairly and keep residents safe. “We would always urge anyone with any concerns when buying goods or services to get in touch and let us know.” Head of trading standards, David Bull, said: “I am pleased with the service’s enforcement activities, which have been well targeted using our intelligence led approach.” For further details on Leicestershire County Council’s Trading Standards service, see www.leics.gov.uk/tradingstandards To report concerns, contact Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline 08454 04 05 06

Road deaths and casualties at a record low The number of people killed or injured on Leicestershire’s roads is at a record low, a new report has shown. In January, Leicestershire County Council reported that in 2012, 27 people lost their lives – the lowest since records began in 1979. This is less than the previous low total of 36 fatalities in 2009 and considerably less than a high figure of 67 fatalities in 2002 and the previous highest total of 91 in 1981. Further information published this month from the council’s Annual Road Safety Report also shows that 196 people were killed or seriously injured in accidents – a drop from 237 in 2011 and considerably less than the 878 recorded in 1979. There has also been a reduction in the number of slight injuries. Peter Osborne, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “What we can see is that, overall year-on-year, there is a downward trend in the number of people killed or injured on our roads, which is very encouraging. “However, there are still too many lives lost, lives changed and families devastated as a result of road accidents. “We will continue to work with our partners to do what we can to try to reduce accidents further. “However, we can only do so much. We need all road users to drive considerately and safely to help continue to reduce the number of casualties.” Examples of schemes and initiatives in 2012 that aimed to reduce accidents included:

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group meets generally 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which generally take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Kirby Muxloe. Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe library as well as on the Group’s web site: www.leicestershirevillages.com/kmlhg At our May meeting, Mike Gould gave a very interesting talk about the Roman settlement at Vindolanda in the North East, together with some of the findings that have been made there. Our next meeting, on Thursday 18th July will be a visit to Grace Dieu Priory.

• A £97,000 scheme to make improvements to the junction of the B4114 and Croft Road, Narborough, which included the installation of traffic lights. A total of 27 people were injured in accidents at the junction between 2005 and 2010, seven of whom were seriously injured.

If you have not been able to attend recent meetings of the Group, but would like more information about the visit, please call Kate Trail (01509 558203).

• The installation of a speed camera on the A6 approaching Loughborough from Quorn.

The following meeting will take place on September 19th, when Mike Gould will be talking about ‘Luddites – Saints or Sinners?’

• In 2012, 13,000 drivers opted to attend speed awareness courses in Leicestershire as an alternative to receiving points on their licence. The education courses provide drivers with clear information and advice on speed and speed limits and help change attitudes and encourage safer behaviour. • Nearly 400 young people took part in pre-driver days at Mallory Park, where they learned about safe driving and were able to take part in driving sessions with instructors.

Some pictures of ‘Old’ Kirby Muxloe are now displayed in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, so if you visit the Hall, you might like to look at them.

It can be really hard for youngsters to keep their training going for as many years as they have - they've all worked so hard and they know it's paid off for them keeping a high standard is a must in our club and definately worth it when awarded with a Black Belt." Training doesn't stop here once you've reached Black Belt - this is where your training really begins !!! As juniors (up to age 16) students then have to take a 'star grade' each year until ready to go for their 2nd Dan grade. Not everyone makes it to the top - with work, life commitments etc getting in the way - but with perseverance and determination - anyone can make it to black belt if they put their mind to it".
