Mid May 2013

Anstey swifts girls are on the ball! After what started 18 months ago as fun training sessions on Saturday mornings, Anstey swifts soon realised the popularity of girls wanting to play football.

On the back of this we decided to join the under 11's all girls league made up of 14 teams from around the local area and some teams further afield. The first season has been a great success with mix results but with plenty to build on and look forward too. Due to its growing popularity we are soon to be setting up another team for the under 11's league with the original girls moving up to the under 12's league next season. Have you got a budding "Bend it like Beckham" girl who wants to join either the under 11's or 12's feel free to come along between 10-11 o'clock on Saturdays at Ansteys recreation ground. Its lighthearted fun and great exercise. For more information contact Tony on 07737344089 Anstey swifts are holding a fundraising day on Saturday 1st June at the recreation ground from 11am with a Bouncy castle, Barbecue Bar and of course football matches going on. Why not come along and join in the fun and see what Anstey Swifts are all about.

County Council Election Results May 2nd 2013 Bradgate Division The Bradgate Division covers Anstey, Cropston, Newtown Linford, Swithland, Thurcaston, Ulverscroft Woodhouse and Woodhouse Eaves.

POLICEMATTERS

Welcome to this months Police Matters from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. As can be seen from the crime figures for the month of APRIL, unfortunately we have seen a rise in ‘burglary other than dwelling’ crimes. The worst hit again this month has been the Davidson’s new build site opposite the cemetery on Groby Rd. However, we have also seen the new renovation of the Plough Public House and the disused Chapel on Bradgate Rd also attacked during the month. With The Crown Public House on Bradgate Rd also now closed, can I please ask that all residents are aware of these sites and to report any suspicious activity to Police on 101. The activity could range from people on site during non ‘normal’ working hours, the sound of electrical equipment or machinery in operation during non working hours, or suspicious vehicles or persons on the site. If the answer to your question ‘should that person and/or vehicle be on that site’? is NO - then contact Police, and use 999 if you consider a crime may be taking place. The building sites have taken their own extra security measures to deter further thefts. We were hoping for some better weather and finally it has arrived, with the unmistakeable smell of freshly cut grass and the drone of the lawnmower. Therefore, it may be timely to pass on some basic crime prevention advice during these (hopefully!) warmer nights. Historically, there is a rise in domestic burglaries when the days start getting warmer, longer and lighter so the following simple tips should help residents keep their properties secure:

• Always close and lock doors and windows before you go out – even if it’s hot or you’re out in your back garden • Keep small high value items like car keys, mobile phones, laptops / tablets out of sight and away from open windows

• Make sure your shed and outbuildings are secure and lock away gardening tools and ladders • Set timers for lights when you are out for longer periods or going away • Register all your property on www.immobilise.com So, enjoy the weather and if you are out in the garden ~ “Lock up whilst you spruce up!” Finally, we would like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers who took part in the recent Community Speed Watch event in Anstey. Your efforts were fantastic, and just shows that we really do have a great community spirit in the village. To all those drivers that were registered doing speeds of 36mph or more in the 30mph speed zones – all 662 of you – “Speed Kills ~ Slow Down”. If anybody has any information on crime they wish to pass on then please call CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 555 111. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH

Film Presentations

Many thanks to everyone who volunteered to take part in the recent Community Speed Watch in Anstey. I don’t think anyone thought we would get over 660 motorists exceeding 36 mph in a 30 mph speed limit around the village, despite all the signs advising motorists about the event. If you were one of the 660 drivers, please slow down when driving through Anstey, speed kills.

May's gentle comedy, "Quartet", was based in a stunning setting near Heathrow. At the home for retired opera singers Jean arrived and disrupted the equilibrium until she rediscovered her voice and her lust for life. Billy Connelly's character, with a glint in his eye, was an outrageous flirt. Maggie Smith's humour was delivered with impeccable timing and charactristic venom!

We actually got a mention on the news bulletins on BBC Radio Leicester the following, Monday morning, plus a report from Julie Mayer with a group of volunteers on Bradgate Rd. Unfortunately I only managed to take part in one session on Cropston Road. NEW AREAS COVERED We have recently set up another 6 schemes in Anstey. Many thanks to the new co-ordinators and I hope you have your street signs up now. During the next two months I am hoping to set up schemes in Charles Drive, King William’s Way, Andrew Road, Gladstone Street and Albion Street. Please think about being the co-ordinator for your street, it is very well worth doing as it gives people a focus point to go for advice on various matters and also to pass on information to the police. Also when I knock at your door and you are IN please answer the door. It is very frustrating to know that people are in and do NOT open their doors, then complain when your survey is not picked up. NORTH AREA NHW AGM This is again being held in Anstey on May 29th at 7.30pm in the Jubilee Hall. This is free to attend and everyone is welcome, whether they are in NHW or not. This year’s speakers include a member of the First Responder scheme, while the main speaker is Sgt Paul Harrison who is stationed at Syston, and is the Deputy Commander for the Charnwood LPU. Hope to see the hall full again this year. NUMBER PLATE BOLT EXCHANGE EVENT We are hoping to stage another number plate bolt exchange event sometime during the summer where the AA in association with Leicestershire Police will change the bolts on your number plates for antitheft ones. I will let you have more details nearer the time. APPEAL FOR A NEW NHW COORDINATOR Unfortunately the NHW coordinator for Burgin Road, Amanda Brown has had to step down due to personal reasons. If anyone living in Burgin Road would like to take over from Amanda, please pop round and have a chat to her, I am sure she will be pleased to hear from you I know I will. If you need to contact me, my details are: Phone number: 0116 2365745 or e-mail ansteynhw1@o2.co.uk

“The Life of Pi” will be shown on Friday June and lasts 120 minutes. June's film is a beautiful adventure drama based on Yann Martel's popular novel. The young Pi is charming and funny as he struggles to stay alive in a fishing boat in the Pacific Ocean with the other shipwreck survivor, a Bengal Tiger, with whom he makes an unexpected connection.. This film was nominated for several BAFTA awards. “Lincoln” will be shown on Friday September 13th and lasts 150 minutes. Daniel Day-Lewis won a BAFTA for "Best Actor" in this magnificent film which follows our summer break. In 1865, President Lincoln struggled to bring to an end the American Civil War. At the same time, he was endeavouring to achieve the constitutional amendment which would ban slavery in the United States for ever. How did he achieve these nearly impossible tasks? Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £4-50 and concessions are £4. The price includes refreshments and a lucky prize draw.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hello all, I hope you all had a great bank holiday, unfortunately I am having to write this month's report from my hospital bed at Glenfield Hospital. I suffered a heart attack on the 13th April, the same day that my loving mother passed away after a lot of pain. By the time you read this I will have had a triple heart bypass and be on the road to recovery. My dad has also been unwell, having spent a period of time at the Royal Infirmary following a mini stroke, he returned home for one night only to fall over and break his hip. He is back in the Royal but making a good recovery. My apologies to anyone who has sent me an email and wondered why I have not answered but I'm sure you'll now understand why! Anyway, onto business...! Bedroom Tax (Spare Room Subsidy) Following the introduction of this tax, 40 Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) tenants have cited 'under occupancy' as their reason to join the choice based lettings scheme to request to be moved to a smaller property. So far 16 of these applicants have been rehoused, saving them from paying between £10 - £25 per week had they remained in their previous property. It is not compulsory to apply for a smaller property and the tax does not apply to pensioners. However, if you are interested in downsizing and would like to find out if you can access financial help to do so, please get in touch with CBC on 01509 634666. Better Broadband CBC have committed £100,000 towards trying to ensure that towns and villages throughout the borough can gain access to high speed broadband. There are almost 74,000 premises with potential access to a broadband service, yet some 13,000 are struggling to get 'up to speed'. In an attempt to rectify this, CBC have signed up to a countywide superfast broadband project. Work is scheduled to start

this summer and is expected to be finished by September 2016. The total cost of the scheme is over £8.4 million and is joint funded by the Government (£3.31 million), Leicestershire County Council (£4 million) and District Councils (£1.1 million). Leicestershire County Council are also seeking additional funding of £1.2 million to support business connections. Loughborough Relief Road Work on the much needed relief road around Loughborough is due to commence on May 7th, subject to weather conditions. It will cause traffic disruption during its construction, so please tune in to local traffic reports before making your journey to and through the town. Don't Forget – Cash for Your Community Fund If your organisation is looking for a grant to fund a community project, remember that you can apply to the Cash for Your Community Fund. Leicestershire County Council have made available a further £15,000 to the Fund to help community projects. For more information go to www.leicestershireforums.org or call 0116 3057034. Time is short so 'don't delay, do it today'. What's My Line? Former Member of Parliament Michael Portillo, who is an avid train enthusiast, visited the Great Central Railway Stations in April and rode between Rothley and Loughborough on the steam locomotive King Edward II. He spent over 2 hours filming and chatting to fellow enthusiasts as part of his TV series 'Great British Railway Journeys', taken from a book written by George Bradshaw. The episode is scheduled to be screened on BBC2 in January 2014. Toot! Toot!

Sutty's Sport Shorts Anstey Town Football Club Title! Once of Leicester Road, Thurcaston and now

playing at Ellistown; Anstey Town FC have become champions of the North Leicestershire League Premier Division, sponsored by East Goscote Plumbers. A convincing 6-1 win against Kegworth Imperial FC secured the title and ensures the Club a return to the Leicestershire Senior League Division One for the 2013/14 season. ATFC won the Division One title on 3 occasions before having to move from their Thurcaston home about 4 years ago. Well done boys, it's just a pity they have to play their home games so far away... Swift Flyers Congratulations to our Junior football teams Anstey Swifts, who have just completed their best season for honours in their 35 year history. Their biggest achievements were winning the Under 18's County Cup for the first time with a convincing 3-0 win against Harborough Town; and the Under 14's beating Oadby Owls in a tense penalty shootout. Both games were played at Holmes Park, the headquarters of the Leicestershire Football Association. A number of other age groups also did well in their respective leagues. Well done to all the coaches and volunteers for their time and effort which has been well rewarded. Val Hayes 0116 2365322. And Finally... Congratulations to Cllr David Snartt who has returned for another 4 years as our County Councillor for Bradgate Division; covering Anstey, Cropston, Newtown Linford, Thurcaston, Ulverscroft, Woodhouse and Woodhouse Eaves. Well done David. If you do need to get in touch then please text me on my mobile or write to me at home and I'll do my best to help. Hope to be back home soon. Cllr John Sutherington

FILMREVIEW Star Trek Into Darkness - 12A

Star Trek Into Darkness is the latest, darkest installment of one of the best-loved franchises ever and from the director of the new Star Wars movies. Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) leads his crew back to Earth only to find an insider has gone on a spree of destruction that has left his world in ruins. Now he has to enter the heart of darkness to put an end to the violence and get his revenge on the man who has ripped away everything he cherished. Star Trek Into Darkness is a sci-fi adventure with a very dark twist.

The Great Gatsby - 12A The Great Gatsby follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blueblooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

County Cup Success For Anstey Swifts The Under 18's became the first team in the Swifts 35 year history to win the County Cup. On a bitterly cold evening at Holmes Park it was great to see so many people from the village plus committee and parents cheering our lads on. Harborough started the game strongly and Dan Greenwood was called upon to make two fine saves. As the first half went on Anstey started to find their feet and our first goal followed with a fine finish from Jake Rouse. The second half saw Harborough tire after all their efforts and two further goals from Joseph Hartopp and a second for Jake Rouse secured a fine 3-0 win.

Newtown Linford Gardening Club Our April visit to Woodland Nursery was truly awe-inspiring. The enormous greenhouses, which all can see when arriving at the Garden Centre a few miles north of Hinckley, but cannot visit, were opened to a large party from our club and we were given a guided tour. Some four million bedding plants are raised in these greenhouses and then sent out to the many garden centres in the Wyevale Group. It was eye-opening to see the huge array of plants. We learned of the ways in which the 30 gardeners, employed on the site, ensured that all the plants were kept healthy and made to grow well enough to be sold to the public. Imagine pinching out over 20,000 fuchsia cuttings, or regulating the temperature in the greenhouse, sometimes on an hourly basis, or watering twice a day, or protecting the plants from pests and diseases and it will give an insight into the methods used to maintain the quality of the plants they sell. We were all greatly impressed. On June 25th our speaker is Colin Olle who is talking to us about the National Garden Scheme which encourages people to open their garden to the public and raise money for charity. This event is timely because one of our members will be doing just that towards the end of July.

All the more pleasing is that six of our squad were all a part of the original team that started 11 years ago, Joseph Hartopp, Joseph Harris, Jake Elton, Taylor MacMillan, Jack Waite and Brad Cockerill all a credit to themselves. At the time of writing this article we are sitting at the top of the premier league, so hopefully it could be a historic 'double'. Rob Harris, Manager.

Sock it to me Where do you hide your valuables? It seems the sock drawer wins with most of us – it comes top in our favourite hidey-hole for things we treasure. Next, comes the space under our bed, according to a survey by confused.com

The visit of Christine Walkden on October 22nd continues to cause a lot of interest. Tickets are being ordered at a steady rate and we have had a lot of interest both from our members and from people who are members of other clubs but wish, on this occasion, to join us for this memorable evening. Tickets at £10 or membership for the year (£12) can be obtained by contacting the secretary (tel. 242452 or e-mail 01530242452@talktalk.net) , or by coming to one of our meetings to see how you like it before making a commitment (£2 for visitors). Alternatively give us a ring and ask for a copy of our programme for the coming year and we will be pleased to send one to you. Anne and David Couling

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY

Despite the threatening weather forecast of bad weather for our “Garden Tea Party” on the 13th May, the Club experienced brilliant sunshine dotted with very short showers. Obviously it was decided not to actually use the garden, but our hostess Mrs Jennifer Kennington provided a very successful Tea Party in her home with the windows allowing the sunshine to make the rooms bright and pleasant. Copious supplies of a huge variety of cakes which were donated by the Committee and generous Members, were happily consumed together with refreshing cups of tea. Meanwhile a different and novel Raffle was held consisting of providing blank envelopes in which to place a £1 donation for the Charity Salvation Army and on which the donator wrote her name and the number of her chosen prize (more than one envelope could be “purchased”) and the numbers 1 – 5 selected and placed in the appropriately numbered box, thus allowing the lucky donator to win the prize of her choice. A further prize draw was conducted by Mrs Gillian Smart, this time for two very generous Prizes namely a very pretty little watch won by Mrs Ann Farndon and the other won by Mrs. Elizabeth Chittenden of Rothley, was a selection of Tea Bags together with a dainty Bag Saucer. All in all a very happy and successful May meeting. Our next meeting on Monday 10th June at 2.15pm features a talk given by Mrs. Sheila Wiggins “Round the Houses - the travels of an Itinerant RAF Wife”. Visitors and new members would be very welcome. Town Charity awards.

The recent meeting of the Anstey Town Charity trustees saw them make awards to 11 local groups totalling £2,780. Beneficiaries included the Anstey Gala 2013 committee, with an award of £400, the sports clubs Anstey Swifts FC and the Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club, the United Reformed Church, St Mary’s Church, Churches together in Anstey, Anstey Neighbourhood Watch and the Bradgate Twinning Association.

Reliable, Local Plumbing & Heating Engineer

The trustees also awarded a grant of £300 to the running of the recently founded Anstey Youth Club which is run under the auspices of the Neighbourhood Watch.

For the second year in succession the Charity made an award to an organisation, known as the Warning Zone, which will help fund their work on personal safety with over 60 children from the two village primary schools.

The Leicestershire Victoria County History project ‘Dig Anstey’ also benefited. Information about the project will be detailed in ‘The Local’ later in the year.

Tribute paid to benefactors. Trustee Chairman, Mr Michael Tedd, paid tribute to benefactors who have recently made donations to the charity, which enables them to increase their investments. Anstey Town Charity is not allowed to invest any of its income from the Charities Official Investment Fund but can do so from donations. Their income must be allocated to organisations and causes linked to Anstey and the investments help to maintain and hopefully increase funds for distribution.

All types of Plumbing Heating & Leadwork undertaken

Honorary Secretary, Ken Schofield, was pleased to report that during the last twelve months donations totalling £843 have been received. These include one from Mrs Tracey Charity, who for the second year has nominated us from the Gala profits and Councillor John Sutherington, who has done so for many years. The trustees were also very grateful to the Bradgate U3A and Police Action Fund for their support.

Contact Richard on Tel: 0116 267 1826 Mob: 07515 486072

The trustees were also very pleased to receive £190 donated in memory of Mrs Peggy Aucott who died earlier this year. Mrs Aucott a lifelong Anstey resident wished to show her gratitude for her many happy years in the village. We are always very grateful to receive donations. Anyone wishing to make a similar donation in memory of a loved one are invited to contact Ken Schofield on 0116 220 7552 for further information. Donors can have the satisfaction of knowing that their bequest will go to helping a variety of worthy village cause.

25 years experience

ANSTEY WI New county federation chairman Anne Allison, in her capacity as a WI advisor, visited Anstey to lead the discussion of the resolutions for the national AGM in Cardiff. Apart from proposed changes to the constitution of the WI, where Anne offered helpful information, though she was careful not to influence members, there is a resolution to address the state of Britain’s High Streets. A lively discussion of the changing nature of shopping followed. Anne then judged the annual trophy competitions, which always coincide with the resolutions meeting. Ann Coney received the baking cup, while Sheila Timms won those for craft and flower arranging. There followed a fun quiz prepared by vice president Chris Figgins, won by Maja Tompkins.

Be an Egg-cellent Gardener Gardeners are being urged to take extra care this spring. The promise of warmer weather gets many of us thinking about trimming or removing garden greenery, but at the same time our feathered friends are busy building their nests, laying their eggs and munching their way through caterpillars and other pests. Although all nesting birds have legal protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act from the moment they start building the nest until the young have fledged, it only takes a moment for a nest to be accidentally destroyed. Birds such as robins, sparrows and blackbirds are in decline and need all the help they can get, especially after a harsh winter. Neil Pilcher from the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust said “We ask everyone to be careful as dense hedges such as Leylandii are good nesting sites, but any hedge, tree, shrub or ivy should be quickly checked just before starting work. If not doing the work themselves, householders should ask their contractor to check for nests too. If in doubt, the work should be postponed until the end of August when the breeding season is over ". For further advice contact the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust on 0116 2720444 or e-mail info@lrwt.org.uk

BRADGATE U3A MAY REPORT We have started the New Year from March with new members on the committee. Also the chair has changed. Barbara Bradshaw now holds this position, with John Chapman as vice chairman. We have a very busy year with new groups taking place. The latest is Creative Writing. I would like to see more people signing up for this group. An outing to Lea Gardens with the gardening group is one of our interest groups ventures. We had a nice day out calling at Chatsworth Farm Shop for morning coffee. The Croquet starts in May at Jubilee Hall recreation ground. This will be every Tuesday during the summer months.

Swifts flying high!

Football has been on a high in the village of Anstey this season, with success being achieved at all junior levels, most of the teams have been challenging for honors, but no more than championship winners at the age groups in under 12’s, under 13’s and county cup winners at under 18’s. Plus the under 17’s winning the Fair Play award, and under 18’s player Joe Hartopp collecting the Golden Boot award. My own team at under 14’s has had the unique honor of not only winning the Division one title, but completing the double by winning the county cup as well. The county cup came first back on April 28th down at Holmes Park where the swifts came up against fellow division one team Oadby Owls, and in what was to be a very tense affair the swifts came out on top after a nervy dreaded penalty shoot out 5-4. That meant Captain for the team Callum Cockerill Mollett had the honor of collecting the trophy for his team on the day, which was by coincidence also the same feat that his older brother Brad did for the under 18’s back in March against Harborough when his team won the cup 3-0. This must me a very unique thing at any level of sport where “both” brothers, “both” Captains do the honors for the same club! We at the Swifts are very proud of them both.

The Hand Bell Ringing is being held at Martin Court run by Ann Brown. Hopefully during our next coffee morning in September the Choir and the Hand Bells will be giving us a demonstration of their skills. Jim Forrest has arranged two social meals out, one Chinese and the other thai. Bradgate U3A has got a very busy Year ahead,we are on the website if anyone wishes to know more details. We are in touch with Martin School to help us with some of our activities, now they are an academy they can help with local community interests.I see this a step in the right direction for Anstey and the School. Barbara Bradshaw - GROUP CO-ORDINATOR

SUMMER ART EXHIBITION 2013 June 1st & June 2nd 11am to 5pm (12 on Sunday) METHODIST CHURCH Main Street Woodhouse Eaves

As for the 14’s completing a league and cup double, they had to go to Thurmaston Magpies away on Saturday morning May 11th, knowing that nothing but a victory would seal the title all be it on goal difference, the game started well from the swifts with Ben Tansley scoring a looping shot from distance to put the swifts 1-0 up, the second goal followed not long after when Captain Cockerill-Mollett scored a precise bottom corner free kick, Thurmaston after the break gave it all, and were rewarded with a goal from a set play free kick, but the game came to a conclusion with no more chances taken and the swifts by the closest margin became champions. Anstey Swifts runs under the wings of club secretary Mrs Valerie Hayes, who has been at the helm close to 25 years now, and without her loyalty and relentless dedication to the cause then the swifts would not be in the very healthy position it is now, we all can look back this season to say all of our teams are becoming the envy of the rest, well done to all, long may it continue!!

Boost green spaces with a Stepping Stones grant

Anstey Swifts Juniors Fun Day

Funding is available for Leicestershire communities keen to boost green spaces for people and wildlife. Up to £2,500 is available towards schemes to help improve parks, nature reserves and other green areas. Now in it’s third year, the Connecting People and Wildlife fund is open to parish / town councils and community groups within the Stepping Stones Project area who want to encourage community action and involvement in their local green space. Andy Jackson, from the Leicestershire County Council based Stepping Stones Project which is offering the funding, said: “This is a great opportunity for communities to help make their neighbourhoods greener. “We can offer funding of up to 75 per cent of the total cost of schemes. However, the deadline is July 31 so we would urge people to get their applications in now.”

Saturday 1st June Recreation Ground, Stadon Road, Anstey - 11.00am onwards Inter team tournaments Dads, committee & Girl’s games

Previous groups that have benefited include a Place to Grow in Enderby, which supports people with a range of mental illnesses, physical disabilities and learning difficulties. Money from the fund went towards improving access for all and restoring the wildlife pond. Grant funding also supported the planting of a community woodland and orchard in Whetstone and access improvements at the local nature reserve in Glen Parva. The development of proposals must involve the community and schemes must show how the local community will benefit from the environmental improvements. Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club The April meeting of the gardening club was all about dahlias. Tom Upton, a local prize winning dahlia grower, explained how he grows championship winning plants from start to finish.

uses, how he supports the plants, and planting out. Tom grows dahlias for showing, and he explained about how he prepares for shows and stages the plants. He also explained and demonstrated how to divide tubers if you are not taking cuttings. Tom grows hundreds of dahlias and many different varieties. He is an expert dahlia grower rather than a professional speaker. Nevertheless, over 40 members and visitors to the club meeting seemed to enjoy Tom’s down to earth and relaxed style of presentation. He was an entertaining speaker and there was a lot of laughter throughout the evening with a lot of banter from the audience. Tom frequently referred to earwigs

The process for Tom starts late November when he lifts all his dahlias and washes and stores the tubers, making sure to label each variety. He keeps these frost free over winter. In January, he kicks the tubers back into life with the use of a heated mat. After about three weeks the tubers have green shoots from which Tom takes cuttings. He went on to explain and demonstrate the process. This included potting on the cuttings, pinching out (or ‘stopping’) the plant to produce more flowers, the compost he uses, the fertilizer he

as the main pest for dahlia growers and how he controls them, or ‘earywigs’ as Tom constantly called them to everyone’s amusement. The next club events are:Wed 8th May, 7.45 pm – Sempervivums and Hardy Sedums – Paul Street An introduction to the beauty of these popular plants. Cultivation, care and propagation. Wed 12th June – Evening Visit to Tebbutt’s Farm, Normanton-on-Soar Country garden with memorable views across the Soar Valley. £3.00 entry includes tea and cake. Wed 14th August, 7.45 pm – Aspects of Garden Design – Stephen Lovell A look at how plants can be used to full effect. What goes where, what are the components of good design, a look at all aspects with the emphasis on practical solutions. New online map highlights Leicestershire footpaths

Council backs Fit for Work service

A new online map showing Leicestershire’s footpaths, byways and bridleways has been launched. Residents and visitors who enjoy exploring the county by walking or riding can access the map by logging on to www.leics.gov.uk/pathsmap

Leicestershire County Council has stepped in to protect a service that helps people return to work after illness. The council and the county’s two clinical commissioning groups are investing £120,000 in the Fit for Work service, following the end of Government funding.

Developed by Leicestershire County Council, it features approximately 1,896 miles (3,052km) of public rights of way. The guide is based on Google maps so users can easily zoom in on featured paths and also use the satellite option, which gives detailed aerial photographs, to get more of an idea of the surrounding landscape.

Leicestershire Fit for Work is a not-forprofit service that works with local GPs and patients, to support people with illnesses to remain in or return to work.

Ian Drummond, Assistant Director for Transportation at Leicestershire County Council, said: “This map is a great easy-to-use tool for anyone who loves exploring Leicestershire via its footpaths, byways and bridleways.

The scheme was so successful that more than 70 per cent of people who used it over the last year returned to work. It was seen as a national exemplar and the basis for the creation of a national service, which is due to launch next year.

“This month is National Walking Month and we are hoping that more people will pull their walking shoes on and get out and about in the county. "This map is a great way of helping residents and visitors to do just that.”

Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet has agreed to fund the service for the next year, after the Department for Work and Pensions ceased funding Fit for Work last month.

The map also shows walking routes that are promoted by the council. Clicking on the routes provides links for further information, including some leaflet downloads. - The online mapping is for guidance. Anyone who is concerned with legal issues relating to the exact routes of public rights of way should consult the master definitive map – more details about this are available at www.leics.gov.uk/maps

A county council spokesman said: “The council and the clinical commissioning groups have decided to invest in Fit for Work over the next year, so that it can continue to operate and support people until the new, national scheme is launched.”

For more information on National Walking Month, including a list of free guided walks that are taking place in the county, visit: www.leics.gov.uk/walking

Your child is in danger Children are safer playing out in the street or their local park than on the internet, says a recent report from the NSPCC.

Individuals who are on long term sickness absence can by referred into the service through their GP and details of the service can be found at www.leicesterfit4work.org.uk

We may warn youngsters about ‘stranger danger’, but we are failing to equip them for new ‘emerging threats’ that are waiting for them on social networking sites and through phenomena such as ‘sexting’ or ‘cyberbullying’. Many children as young as five spend up to six hours a week on the internet, and a quarter of 11 and 12 year olds now see something on the internet every day which worries them. The report also warns that almost three out of 10 children aged 11 – 16 have been bullied over the internet through a smartphone. CARPET & or UPHOLSTERY CLEANING SERVICE

No wonder experts are urging parents to take steps to protect their children from these very real threats. This CAN be done, but children need help.

High pressure sales won't wash say Trading Standards Trading Standards officers have issued a warning about rogue traders offering to jet wash drives and patios in the county. The traders have been calling door-to-door and use a range of tactics to pressurise consumers in to having the work done. Leicestershire County Council’s Trading Standards Service is urging people to be vigilant. They have received a total of nine complaints since February in the Melton and Loughborough areas where customers have paid between £80 - £5,500 for work that has been badly done. The traders usually use professional looking leaflets, which are no guarantee that the trader is reputable. They also ask to use the customer’s water supply to carry out the work. They usually start the work straight away and don’t give the customer a written seven day ‘cooling off’ period required by law. Once work starts, the traders will identify other jobs that they could complete on the property. David Bull, Head of Leicestershire County Council Trading Standards Service, said: ‘Residents should always be extremely wary of traders who cold call door-to-door. “We frequently see cases where rogue traders have convinced consumers to have work done that is not required and is usually over priced and badly done. “Our advice is never to agree to any work without getting at least three written quotes from a number of well known or local traders.” Information on dealing with doorstep sellers, as well as special no cold calling stickers, to find a reputable trader from the Trustmark scheme is available at: www.leics.gov.uk/tradingstandards If you wish to report any rogue traders email: telltradingstandards@leics.gov.uk Top tips if approached by doorstep sellers: • Do not agree to have any work carried out on the doorstep without getting written quotations from other trader. • Say you are not interested and do not let the caller into you home. • Rogue traders often give name and address details that are false, so if you can, try and make checks about any trader you are thinking of employing. • If you receive information through your door advertising home improvement or other services, think carefully before you respond, as glossy, professional leaflets can be used by rogue traders to give you the impression they are genuine businesses.

Little Markfield Farm Open Day This year’s open day is on the 9th June, and we hope that it is going to be bigger and better than the last year as the family is celebrating 100 years of working the land at Little Markfield Farm. This year we will be having cookery demonstrations, sausage making demonstrations along with craft and food stalls, vintage tractors and machinery, stationary engines, and of course all the animals. Last year’s event raised £1200 for Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance as well as for St Michael and All Angels Church of Markfield. There are a few stalls left - if you would like one, contact us on (01530) 242173.

Providing IT Support to business & home users

This month sees the launch of Louis Bespoke Kitchens - a new kitchen concept that has been created in Coalville by Stuart & Rita Irving to run alongside their established business Ablutions Luxury Bathrooms. Stuart tells the story. “Although we used to supply kitchens it was 7 or 8 years since we displayed them and thus, when we needed a new kitchen for ourselves, it was time to see what the industry had been doing. We were disappointed – it’s as simple as that – we couldn’t see that any radical changes had been made so we decided to sit down and do it ourselves. Hence Louis Bespoke Kitchens came into being – with Louis being an acronym of the words logical, original, unique, innovative and sustainable.” Stuart explains a few of the ideas that they came up with: “We have tiled plinths for durability, plinth drawers to use wasted space, heat-proof pull-out trays for use next to ovens, unique ‘Zed’ units that reduce the bulk of gable ends, magnetic roofed cupboards for the storage of induction pans, a ‘hands-free’ bin-unit and open units for towels/trays/ oven that are ceramic lined for ease of cleaning.” These and many more original ideas are incorporated in Louis Bespoke Kitchens along with a Rationalised Design Service that provides each enquirer with a full explanation of the reasoning behind their design. To see a fully operational ‘Louis’ kitchen call at the Louis/Ablutions showroom at 7 Stephenson Court, Brindley Road, Stephenson Industrial Estate, Coalville. LE67 3HG.

During the day demonstrations will take place, amongst which will be crewel work, working with silks, machine embroidery and transferring designs to fabric, with an opportunity to try some. These demonstrations will appeal to embroidery and needlework enthusiasts alike including those who are just starting out. Information will be available on where to learn these skills and techniques. Alison Coates, Chair, is extending a warm welcome and looks forward to introducing the fun, friendship and creativity of textiles to all. Alison is certain everyone who views the exhibition and takes part in the demonstrations will find it really enjoyable. If you wish to discover or rekindle the joy of stitch and handling and manipulating fabrics, come along. Refreshments are available and entrance is free. For further details contact Deborah Phillpott (secretary) on 01455 612261

Thank You To Voters Although personally disappointed, I am concerned at the poor turnout in the election which only saw just over 3 out of every 10 electors bothering to vote. The right to vote has been hard fought for over the years and should not be taken for granted. Hopefully the next election will produce a better return.

The loneliness of baby boomers One in three of us who are over 50 struggles with loneliness. This is fuelled partly by the rise in ‘silver splitters’ - people who divorce later in life. The number of older people getting divorced has almost doubled in a decade.

Campaign groups warn that the generation approaching retirement will prove to be a ANING SERVICE ‘loneliness time bomb’. Michele Mitchell, director general of Age UK, voiced her concern that cuts to local authority budgets “are exacerbating the problem of loneliness and isolation for many older people.”

The study, published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), shows that the problem is most acute among those who live alone or have long-standing illnesses that lead to them becoming isolated. Over 60 per cent of those who had been widowed felt lonely for some or much of the time. 51 per cent of divorced or separated people felt lonely. (By contrast, only just over 40 percent of those who had always been single said they felt lonely.)

To see a 90-second video taken of the concert last year, go to www.wistow.com and click on the arrow in the middle of the big picture of Wistow Hall on the Home Page. The concert is supporting “LOROS” (Hospice Care for Leicestershire & Rutland), the “Prince’s Trust” (helps change young lives), and the “Breast Cancer Campaign” (which funds research into breast cancer).

May I take the opportunity to thank all those who took the time to vote in the recent County Council Election for the Bradgate Division. Even though I was unsuccessful on the day, I would like to thank all those who supported me.
