Mid July 2013

Keep Thurcaston Rural! At a poorly advertised meeting on Friday 7th June 2013, Mather Jamie Ltd presented a building development proposal to some Thurcaston residents. The proposal which includes an option to add 150 houses to the current 400 dwellings (a 40% increase on current) is proposed for land behind Leicester Road along the Great Central Railway corridor.

With escalating heating costs in the winter and with glass/polycarbonate roofs acting as green houses during the summer, is it time to re evaluate your conservatory in line with modern requirements. Charnwood conservatories specialise in the remodelling of existing conservatories. We start by removing the existing roof covering and running in new structural elements to the roof where necessary. proof & breathable membrane to eliminate condensation, and insulate the roof with Kingspan rigid foam between the rafters and Super Tri-Iso multi foil below, to give an over all heat loss compliant with the high levels required by current building regulations. ight

A Thurcaston Action Group (TAG) has been set up to canvass the feelings of the local residents to the proposals. That group would be very interested to hear your local opinion and for offers of advice or expertise.

gives your conservatory a more solid feel and a freshness that only comes with a newly decorated area of your home. Decorating your home gives personality to your individual tastes and good lighting is essential in this. We can help you to design and install lighting to suit your desires, with the amazing effects that modern LED technology can create, or the concealed contemporary and beautiful lighting can create the atmosphere you’ve always enjoyed in your most peaceful of rooms.

A spokesman for the group said: "This proposal would have a huge impact on our small scale community with proposed growth at 40%. It will increase traffic substantially - Thurcaston is limited with one major through road (Leicester Road) and is not well supported by bus routes especially on evenings and weekends. Local reaction has been one of shock – first by a development proposal and secondly that it is so very large. The effect of this development would be to change the shape of a rural community forever and degrade the landscape character”

Don't get spooked! Sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge Calling all youngsters - it’s time again for Leicestershire libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s theme is Creepy House, and with it the promise of spine-tingling adventures for holidaying schoolchildren. Creepy House runs from Saturday (July 6) to September 7 and children aged 4-12 years have to visit their local library three times during the summer and read or listen to six books to complete the reading challenge. All children who complete the challenge will receive a Creepy House certificate and medal. The Creepy House challenge will be officially launched at a family fun morning being held at Donington-le-Heath Manor House, near Coalville, on Saturday. During the event (10.30am to 1pm), children can investigate clues and follow a trail through the Creepy House, listen to spine-tingling tales and take part in other ‘spooky’ craft activities. There will also be face painting with Livi Lollipop. The Creepy House materials have been illustrated by Chris Riddell, who was involved in The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Richard Blunt, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet member for heritage, leisure and arts, said: “With the theme being Creepy House, and with Donington-le-Heath Manor House a regular host to ‘ghost trails', it seemed the ideal place to hold the family fun morning. There is also free entry to Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and Snibston Discovery Museum for children taking part in the challenge. Each child must produce their Creepy House sticker poster at reception and be accompanied by a full-paying adult. All the creepy action does not stop at Donington-le-Heath, though. On Friday, August 2, Snibston’s Century Theatre will be playing host to acclaimed author Tommy Donbavand, who is the creator of the successful Scream Street series. Tommy is giving a talk eerily titled Giant Crabs Ate My Brain from 11am to 12 noon and again from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. He is also hosting a fun workshop from 1pm to 2pm when children can write a fun story in his fast and furious 'idea busters' writing workshop. To find out more about the Summer Reading Challenge call into your local library or visit: www.leics.gov.uk/creepyhouse Summer Reading Challenge co-ordinators in the county are also looking for 14-25 year-olds who would like to volunteer for this year’s programme. There is a chance for volunteers to increase their communication, organisational and creative skills – as well as further exploring a love of books – by taking part and, for more information, visit: www.leics.gov.uk/volunteers_opps

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club

Annual Show - September 7th 2013

This year is the 30th anniversary of the formation of the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club and the 30th Annual Show. The Show has improved each year and now has Arts and Craft, and Photography classes alongside classes of Floral Art, Home Baking, Preserves and Wine, as well as classes for children to enter. However, the traditional sections of Vegetables, Flowers and Fruit still retain the largest number of classes.

30th Annual Garden, Craft & Produce Show

The Annual Show has always been held at the Memorial Hall at Thurcaston. Now, after 30 years, we find ourselves needing a bigger home in order to accommodate our ever growing number of exhibits and afternoon visitors. So this year we are moving to the Richard Hill Primary School a short distance away on the Anstey Lane

There will be the usual added attractions of a tombola stall, a “Market Stall” sale of entries after the Show and refreshments. The Show is open to all and you don’t have to be an expert to enter. You will love the gentle competitiveness and the joy of taking part. Exhibits are displayed from 8.30 to 10.45am. You are also welcome as a visitor. Doors are open to visitors at 2.30pm at a cost of 50 pence (free to children and exhibitors). Show schedules are now available from the Thurcaston Memorial Hall, Tebbatts Electronics in Thurcaston, Brookside Nurseries in Anstey, and Bradleys Supermarket in Rothley. BRADGATE LIONS CLUB NEWS We have just completed our 24th. year during which we raised £4,600.00 to support mainly local charities and good causes. This brings the total funds raised since our foundation in 1989 to just over £148,000.00 most of which has gone to help charities in our local community. On July 1st. We are starting our 25th. year as a Lions Club, and our President Jill Townsend continues for a second term in office. This is unusual, as we usually change the President every twelve months. But Lion Jill feels that with one year in office already under her belt, she can provide us with the strong leadership needed to continue supporting our community!! And she hopes that under her guidance we can continue, as we have done in the past, to provide the help and service as we have done for the previous 24 years. With these aims in mind, and to help us achieve them, we should like to invite new members to join us. We are not just fund raisers, but as club members we enjoy an active social life as well, with pub meals, skittle matches, theatre visits etc: We meet twice a month, on the second Thursday evening, at Forest Hill Golf Club, Botcheston to discuss our business, and on the fourth at various venues for our social gatherings.

Wed 9th October, 7.45 pm – Plants that Excite – Dr Andrew Ward Wed 13th November, 7.45 pm – An Old Fashioned Christmas – Felicity Austin Wed 11th December, 7.45 pm – Social Evening and Quiz Night Although we are almost half way through the year, it is still possible to join the Gardening Club. The membership fee is based on a pro rata basis, or £3.00 per meeting. And, if you would like to come as a visitor and then you decide to join, your visitor fee will be refunded!! So, if you are interested in gardening - come and give the Club a try.

For further information about us, and about Lions clubs in general, give Roger a call on 01530 242912. He will be pleased to help!

Nomads in Positive Mood Ahead of New Season

Anstey WI Anstey WI organised a trip to Powis Castle and Gardens in Mid-Wales, and invited friends and family along. They enjoyed a wonderful day at this beautiful National Trust property. The weather was kind, allowing leisurely exploration of the gardens, where among other delights there was a wonderful display of rhododendrons. They also called at Shrewsbury for long enough to explore there.

Anstey Nomads FC will start the season in the East Midlands Counties League on August 3rd. First Team Boss Mark Poulton will have a new addition on his Management Team. Joining his team along side Paul Joyce, Andy Brett & Russ PrestonHayes will be Andy’s brother Nick Brett who will also continue as a player. A series of very competitive pre-season matches have been arranged against some quality sides from higher leagues. Pre-Season training will take place on Tuesday & Thursday evenings and on Saturday mornings. New players are welcome to attend so if you are interested get to the Nomads at 7pm on Tuesdays & Thursdays & 11am on Saturdays. Our Reserves tremendous efforts last season in finishing runners up have been rewarded with promotion to the Leicestershire Senior League Division One. Manager Rob Harris has an exciting season to look forward to. In particular a couple of tasty fixtures against old rivals Anstey Town. Although Town are now based at Ellistown I am sure both sets of supporters are looking forward to renewing old rivalries. After an absence of some 12 years Nomads will be fielding an u18 side in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlight League. This new side will provide a great opportunity for any talented young players from our partners in the village Anstey Swifts FC to step up into senior football. We are delighted to announce that our match day admission prices have been frozen for the third year running. First team prices (the lowest in the League) are £4 (concessions £2) & Reserves £1 (Concessions 0.50p). Our highly successful Supporters card scheme will again run this season. For a £10 fee, admission can be gained at £3 for all home League & Cup matches plus a free programme. The concessionary price is £ 5 where admission can be gained at £1. Please ask at the bar in our clubhouse to get an application form. We are always looking for match day volunteers to add to our friendly team so we would welcome anyone interested. Full training will be provided. Please ask at our bar if you would like to help out. Or ring clubhouse 0116 2364868. Finally a big thank you to our main sponsors Sturgess Hyundai of Cropston Road, Anstey who have renewed our partnership again this season. We will be wearing two new kits with their branding on. We welcome their continued support. We are also happy to have signed up a new sponsor The Passage to India restaurant and are looking forward to a long & fruitful relationship with them. We are always looking for additional sponsors and have a series of marketing opportunities available to business’s. Please contact Ian Grogan on 0116 2201669 for more details. Monsters University - U

† ‡ˆ‰ Landlubbers ‘aargh!’

Monsters University is the inspired prequel to one of the greatest animated movies of all time. Back before they joined Monsters Inc. Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman) had to learn the scaring skills they would later use to such brilliant effect and what better place to do that than at Monsters University? But, forced to share a room in the University residence, they are instant deadly enemies until circumstances conspire to bring them together into the force we know and love. Monsters University is a brilliantly funny story of friendship and how a fright can be good for you.

Stray Dogs In the mid June edition of the ‘Local’, Councillor Sutherington, writing about stray dogs, wrote that the RSPCA and PDSA had not been ‘a deal of help’. As a long serving Borough Councillor he should have known that, under the 2006 Clean Neighbourhood Act that from April 2008 stray dogs were the sole responsibility of the local authority, in our case the Charnwood Council!

The RSPCA cares for abused, neglected and ill treated animals while the PDSA helps pet owners on low incomes and benefits. Neither are responsible for strays. Both of these animal welfare organisations not only come to the aid of needy animals but also provide a valuable service to the community.

A great family day out. Bring your own picnic. Family entertainment. Free parking. Complimentary goody bag plus free 4 week mummy fitness plan with nutritional advice. Lots of stalls. Opportunity to meet other parents.

Careless comments as expressed in the Councillor’s report can do a great deal of harm to the reputations of these two great charities.

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY

With the July weather hot and strong, we ventured to pastures new for our Strawberry Cream Tea on Monday 8th July. Our chosen venue this year was “Woodlands” Nurseries and Restaurant at Stapleton on the A447. After a delightful journey crossing the surrounding countryside, members used their visit to explore the vast Nursery together with notable shops containing quality clothing, crockery, glassware and kitchenware. At the appointed time we gathered in the newly arranged quiet area of the Restaurant, to enjoy a very generous Tea consisting of a large fruit scone, jam, and luscious English strawberries and a very generous portion of double Cream. Accompanying this feast was a pot of tea for two or more cups, milk and sugar individually served; this added a feel of quality as opposed to the “all-in-one” usually served elsewhere. On conclusion of a very pleasant occasion, a Raffle was drawn in favour of the Salvation Army, our chosen Charity for the year, raising approximately £31.

I was pleased to see that Councillor Sutherington gave details of the Hathern Dog Rescue. May I suggest that he asks the Council to get its act together so that they give a better deal to stray finders. The RSPCA also recommends that all dogs and cats be micro-chipped and have a tag giving relevant details so that their owners can be easily contacted. PS Glad to hear that you are on the mend John., I enjoy reading your report but get your facts right. Ken Schofield Vice President Leicestershire RSPCA.

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate. Late Night Bus Update. I am pleased to report that the introduction of a late night bus into Anstey has taken a step nearer to happening. I am grateful to Anstey Parish Council for applying to the County Council’s Big Society Fund to secure funds for a feasibility study to see if this service is commercially viable. During the next few months we need to make sure everyone who will use the service during the trial period knows the details of the start date and time, because if it is not used to the level that it is commercially viable the service may be removed. Housing Development, Bradgate Division. Further to the information I gave in the last edition about the proposal for up to 34 dwellings on Bradgate Road, Anstey. Since then several more development proposals have come forward in Anstey and Thurcaston. For the record, I objected to the Bradgate Road proposal to Charnwood Borough Council because, in my view, it was in conflict with the recently published National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), where it cites protection of the environment as a critical component of this framework. I also believe, it is in conflict with planning policy, especially being outside the limits to development. I also stated that it was an unsustainable development due to a limited bus service, therefore the car would be the main mode of transport. I have now attended an exhibition at Thurcaston, where information about three options on proposed development were explained. Option one would see up to 70 dwellings to the north of the village. Option two up to 80 dwellings towards the south of option one, closer to the A46 and option three combining both option one and two. I know from the communications I have received and attending the last Parish Council meeting that these proposals are not welcome by the majority of local residents. I therefore hope when and if a planning application is submitted to Charnwood Borough Council all residents will make their views known. I was particularly pleased to see so many residents responded to the planning application on Bradgate Road. I have also attended exhibitions for further development in Anstey on three separate sites, Gynsill Lane, where up to 57 dwellings are proposed and two sites either side of Groby Road totalling up to 155 dwellings. I have also been contacted by residents living in the Fairhaven Road area of Anstey stating that they have seen surveyors in a field nearby. For some time now I have had serious concerns about the highway infrastructure coping with

the extra traffic this new development will bring, especially in The Nook, Anstey and the A46 roundabout on Leicester Road. I have written to Highway Officers at County Hall expressing these concerns, stating in my view, we need to take a holistic approach to the traffic issues and not take each individual planning application for development in isolation. I have stated before we have seen Anstey grow by 600+ dwellings with very little highway infrastructure improvements. I will keep you updated on progress. Don’t Muck Around Awards. I attended the second Don’t Muck Around Awards where local residents are recognised for the amazing work they do which contributes to improving the Borough’s diverse and spectacular environment. It is hoped that all this excellent work will inspire others to follow suit and help make Charnwood a cleaner, greener and healthier place for everyone. Although residents in my area didn’t win the top awards this year, I was so pleased that Pam Crankshaw from Woodhouse Eaves was shortlisted in the “Inspiring Others” category for her contribution as the Parish volunteer litter warden and has also gathered four other parish volunteers as well as recruiting litter pickers from neighbouring villages. Also shortlisted in the “Community” category was the Cropston and Thurcaston Group – Litter Link Project. This committed group of volunteers have improved the environment and reduced litter thanks to their regular patrols in target areas in Cropston and Thurcaston.

Children’s Heart Surgery Glenfield Hospital. I was pleased the Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt gave a statement in parliament about the children’s heart surgery Safe and Sustainable Review. He had asked the Independent Reconfiguration Panel to advise whether it is of the opinion that the proposals for change under the review of Children’s Heart Services will enable the provision of safe, sustainable and accessible services. Overall the Panel was of the opinion that the proposals for change, as presented, fall short of achieving this aim. The Panel concluded the

original decision to close Glenfield was based on flawed analysis of incomplete proposals and their health impact. I know many local residents signed petitions and made the case to keep the excellent children’s heart and ECMO units at Glenfield, therefore I believe this statement will be very welcome and, in my view, Glenfield should be recognised as an excellent heart surgery centre and a world leading ECMO unit whilst it is subject to a new consultation. Conservation Area Character Appraisals. The Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet formally adopted the Conservation Area Character Appraisals and Management Plans for Swithland and Woodhouse, Forest Road and School Lane. The appraisals are intended to be an objective statement and factual description of these conservation areas. It also describes the strengths and weaknesses of each area and identifies opportunities for enhancement. The appraisals should establish a sound basis for the guidance of planning and development management decisions. Through the consultation period, input was received from local residents. In some cases the information supplied has been included in the Management Plan. In all three areas it was stated that it would be good to investigate the boundaries of the existing conservation areas to include certain other adjacent areas, such as the inclusion of Beaumanor Hall and linking the two conservation areas in Woodhouse. Concerns were also raised about the impact of volume and speed of traffic within all three of the areas along with general highway safety issues. If you need to contact me on any issues write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 0HH e-mail david,snartt@leics.gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804

ANNUAL GARDEN FETE - Saturday 7th June 2013

What is this?

Although the day began with rather overcast skies, the sun came out and our annual garden fete got off to another great start. Despite the numbers attending being a little down on the previous year, all the stalls did very well. The cake stall almost sold out and the raffle ticket sellers hardly had time to lift their heads from taking names and telephone numbers. After people had browsed the bric-a-brac in the hope of finding that “Antiques Road Show” moment; then moved on to purchase plants to fill the gaps in their gardens resulting from losses during the winter; and not forgetting the attraction for the youngsters wanting to try the selection of children’s games; it was time to sit down and enjoy a cup of tea and homemade refreshments in the Harrison Room and catch up with friends and family, or relax in the Church and enjoy the music of the classical guitar group. Our main attraction (by very popular demand) was yet again the teddies parachuting from the bell tower. The teddy rescue team was kept very busy and had to use some imaginative ways to rescue the teddies when the gusting wind blew them off course! I am very pleased to say that all the teddies survived without any injury. I feel, that if the truth be known, there were a number of the teddies that quite enjoyed the attention they got by being rescued, some even more than once! We are eternally grateful for the excellent help we get from all the volunteers who give up their Saturday to help set up and run all the stalls, including the refreshments, and to those fearless bell ringers who parachute the teddies from the tower (all fully risk assessed of course). An enormous thanks to the parishioners, friends and family of all ages – without your support the event would not be such a success. This year the Fete proceeds raised additional much needed funds of £1104.00 for the Church, so on behalf of Rector David and the Parochial Church Council, VERY many thanks. - Jeff Kennington – Churchwarden

Many thanks to all who supported the event – the supper was delicious as usual, so special thanks to Kathryn and Tony Marshall and all the staff at the Wheatsheaf Inn, Thurcaston, for their continued support at this event. - Jeff Kennington

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Still no mention in the Queen’s official birthday list, but crikey what a weekend to be writing my monthly report. It started Friday evening with Leicestershire Cricket Club actually winning a game. Sensational Lions Rugby on Saturday morning when we beat the Aussies. Saturday afternoon Anstey & Glenfield cricket club’s 2 league teams both won (another rarity.) We also seem to be doing well in the tour de France? Then to cap the weekend Andy Murray laid the 77 year wait for a man to win the Wimbledon singles title. I must admit I did get a little carried away with the Lions and Murray victories which is not what the doctor ordered; but sometimes you’ve just got to let your emotions go? All this on the hottest weekend of the year so far. Next it’s the Ashes or the highlights as it’s not on “proper TV” like ALL national sports should be. Sky money rules though... DELIGHT LESS?? There's a total of 608 street lights in the parish of Anstey (I've counted them off the plan so allow for a little human error!), 287 lights are proposed by Leicestershire County council to be converted soon to part night lighting. The lights would automatically switch off at 12am (midnight) until 5.30am. 321 street lights are proposed to remain unchanged. According to the County Council, whose idea this is, previous experience at other locations has shown anti-social behaviour and crime levels to have dropped since the introduction of part-night lighting. Hmm! That of course may be true, although I am NOT convinced. Having spent since 1981 as a parish councillor and 1999 at Charnwood Borough trying to, and succeeding in bringing Anstey out of the dark ages. To have all these lights switched off is inviting crime. Some streets will have NO LIGHTING at all. To me an open invitation for our not so honest members of society. There is a full scale map in the parish Council office. If you would like to view how your street fares please ring 0116 2362646. Or I can send you an email. If you would like to discuss this further ring Clive Hodges at county Hall on 0116 3057224. Or email siobhan.woodward@leics.gov.uk DISGUSTED At the wanton vandalism at the Anstey library where the Perspex shelter outside the Library/children’s sure start centre has been badly damaged. I am also aware of continued vandalism at Gynsill Lane playing fields where Anstey & Glenfield’s cricket covers have been slashed for the 2nd time in 2 years.

It makes you wonder if the perpetrators’ of these acts of vandalism have the sense they were born with? Both these areas have CCTV recording 24/7. And yes the police now have the DVD’s. DISMAYED. It seems to be never ending at the moment with almost weekly applications for new homes within Anstey and now at Thurcaston. All very well I know because we do have a shortfall in Charnwood but with the possibility of another 300+ within Anstey and 160 in the village of Thurcaston I feel this could just be a house too far. The village facilities/infrastructure could well be stretched to far this time with these latest proposals, especially the already acute traffic situation in Anstey. There is already a local action group Gynsill Lane against Development (GLAD) perhaps we need a village uprising. It is certainly getting past a joke. DISAPPOINTED? I have to say despite a front page advert and reminders to all organisations within this column; no one from “our villages” even sent an application form in to the Bradgate, Rothley, Mountsorrel and Birstall Area Forum to try for a slice of the Community Forum £15,000 grant pot. 10 projects put their cases forward to an invited audience at Mountsorrel Methodist Church. It would have been nice to have funded all 10 but with a total of £30.000 asked for, Birstall Parish Council, Rothley Imps FC, Cricket club and Tennis Clubs were all unsuccessful.

NB: - Just think how many fund raising events you would have to organise and then hope people would turn up to support, when you could have got up to £5,000 by just filling in a form and doing a 3 minute presentation once a year...sigh! ARMED FORCES WEEK. I did represent Anstey at the unfurling of the special flag at Loughborough Town Hall. There was a good turn out from all the armed forces, mayor of Charnwood Cllr Sandie Forrest and a Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the county Terrance Higgins OBE, JP. But I was rather disappointed with the turnout of councillors. Just 4 out of 52 attended... THE RECCY! For all those of the right age we have some new play equipment that has been recently installed at the Stadon Road playing fields, Anstey, which is being well used and hopefully enjoyed. We are also repairing the skateboard. It is hoped to increase play provision even more in the village in the not too distant future. MITCHELLS FIELD Anstey. At last after 10 years all the interested parties have sat round a table and things look to be moving forward, it’ll take time to come to fruition but I have made sure that money is still available at Charnwood Borough Council, and it is. Watch this space!!! And finally. DE-WIND FARMS! - This made me smile Energy Minister Greg Barker MP says “Planning permission will only be given if the potential impact on birds is acceptable”

NOW SEE WHAT YOU COULD HAVE WON... The SIX remaining local groups however all received substantial grant funding for their organisations:Rothley Scout group were the biggest grant winners receiving (£4,320) to help pay towards a new roof at its headquarters. Others to benefit were the Disabled Adventure Club (£700) and Railway project (£3,316) both at Mountsorrel.

Acceptable to whom I ask? I can’t imagine any impacts with turbine rotors (Blades) can be acceptable to any birds... Perhaps I should “Tweet” the right honourable member for Bexhill and Battle. 1066 and all that, Keep your eye on that one Harold.

Birstall village’s Carl Gunn’s community Gym received (£1,500) for its “Reach for the sky” project and (£1,280) for the Methodist church to re-launch of its luncheon club. While Longslade School also at Birstall received (£3,884) towards the converting of an existing empty bungalow on site, into a “Learning Hub” for 13-18’s with behavioural problems.

Don’t forget to “HAVE YOUR SAY” with County Hall about the proposed big village switch off. If you don’t voice your opinion you could be left “In the Dark”

There is no “Local” in August so I’ll hopefully be back keeping you informed in September. Have a good holiday.

Can Anstey Not Demand Lit entrances? CANDLE! ~ I am available at any reasonable time, keep safe keep well lit!! ~

SUMMER SAFETY ADVICE As the summer holidays are fast approaching, many of us are thinking of going away. It is important for local residents to ensure preventative measures are taken to deter opportunist burglars. Break-ins are likely to take place in the spring and summer months by opportunist burglars looking for insecure windows and doors, so leaving your doors unlocked, even while you’re in the garden or upstairs, is taking a risk. The most important thing is that you lock your doors and don’t become complacent. It only takes a second for someone to get into your home and take things without your noticing. If you are planning to go on holiday you can help protect yourself from becoming a victim of burglary by following these simple steps: • Ensure that your house looks occupied • Ask a trusted neighbour to open and close your curtains for you • Secure garden boundaries • Do not leave valuables on display in front of windows • Ask a neighbour if they don’t mind parking their car on your driveway and trimming your garden lawn to make your home look occupied • Consider fitting outside security lighting or a visible alarm to help deter burglars • Before leaving, check the garden for any insecure tools or ladders • Use timers for lights to come on late evening • Cut the front and back lawns before you go away and trim any plants that burglars could hide behind • Cancel milk and newspaper delivers • Don’t advertise that you are going away on social media websites. • Register for the Royal Mail ‘Keepsafe’ service – they hold on to your post and deliver it when you return If you see anyone acting suspiciously around a property, please contact the police via the 101 non emergency number or if a crime is in progress dial 999. ANSTEY GALA Anstey NHW will be attending the Gala again this year. If you are interested in knowing more about joining a Neighbourhood Watch scheme or becoming a coordinator, please stop by the stall and have a chat. I will have a selection of booklets, along with different security devices for sale. The gala is being held on Saturday 21st September, from 12 noon till 4pm. NEW NHW SCHEMES I have been busy setting up new NHW schemes in Charles Drive/ King Williams Way and Andrew Road. The main coordinator for Charles Drive is James Shaw, who has Eddie Routledge, Paul Taylor and Irene Johnson, helping him. Dick Moore has volunteered to be the coordinator for Andrew Road. I am also looking to set up schemes in both Albion Street and Gladstone Street shortly. The benefits in joining a scheme are varied, helping to make your neighbourhood safer, just by displaying your sticker in the window is a deterrent for burglars. Then there are your NHW street signs, advertising that you are all in a scheme. Some Building Societies even give you a discount on your house insurance. If anyone is interested in setting up a scheme in their area, and you don’t live in Anstey, please get in touch with your local PCSO who will be please to help you. ATMs I hope you all have read the article from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhoods Policing Team, regarding the advice on using the ATM’s (cash dispensers) outside Banks/Stores. If you think it’s fitted with a skimmer, please contact the Police immediately. NORTH AREA AGM We were very disappointed with the low turn out to this event, this year. It could be because of the weather that night, or who the speakers were. If you have any ideas for a speaker at next year’s AGM we would be very glad to hear your views. If you would like to contact me for any reason my details are: Phone no: 0116 2365745 or e-mail ansteynhw1@o2.co.uk DIANE TILLOTSON ANSTEY NHW BEAT MANAGER

School children net Jeffrey Schlupp's shirt School children have netted a Leicester City player’s match day shirt in a competition to raise awareness of reuse and recycling. Maplewell Hall School in Woodhouse Eaves clinched the shirt, belonging to Jeffrey Schlupp, after telling judges why they would like to own it. The shirt had been uploaded to www.freeuseit.org, a website that enables city and county residents to give and take items for free. The school beat off competition by telling the “giver” – Leicester City Football Club and the Leicestershire Waste Partnership which runs the site – that it would be a fantastic addition to its ‘museum’ about the county’s history. Darren Harris, from Maplewell Hall School, said: “We are delighted to have won Jeffrey Schlupp's match day shirt to add to our museum exhibition on local history. “We are a school for students with Special Educational Needs and having this in our exhibition will help to highlight to our students the part played by Leicester City Football Club in Leicestershire's great sporting heritage. “We are also pleased to be able to play a role in raising awareness of reuse and recycling. We would like to thank Leicester City Football Club and the Leicestershire Waste Partnership for running the competition and for choosing us as the recipients of the shirt.” Guy Jackson, Chairman of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: “Maplewell Hall School beat off some tough competition after telling us they wanted to display the shirt at the school. “We thought it would be great for the shirt to help children learn about the history of Leicestershire. “Freeuse is an excellent website that is becoming more and more popular. We would like to thank Leicester City Football Club for helping us promote it further and help prevent more rubbish from being sent to landfill.” Mark Davies, from Leicester City Football Club, said: “We are delighted to see Jeffrey’s shirt go to such a worthy school and am sure it’ll have pride of place at their museum. “We know Maplewell school well as they take part in the club’s 100% Attendance Scheme so we are doubly happy for them to have won. “As a club we are always looking to reduce our carbon footprint and the Freeuse campaign has opened our eyes to how we can improve, as I hope it has done for other organisations and individuals in the region.” Since it was set up in December 2009 www.freeuseit.org has prevented nearly 150 tonnes of waste from going to landfill. A free phone app is also available for both the iphone and Android format, enabling users to find local items.

Successful Village Pre-school “doubles” its capacity Back in April 2012 we announced the new arrival of a brand new Pre-school on Bradgate Road, Anstey. Barely a year on and the success of the pre-school has meant that it has already out grown its original premises at the United Reformed Church and it is now set to relocate to a larger premises just a stone’s throw away. Anstey Early Learning Pre-school opened its doors for the first time on the 16th April 2012 and with just a handful of children attending. Since then the pre-school has experienced a huge demand for its places which it offers to all children aged 2-5 years. The new location for Anstey Early Learning Pre-school will now be right at the heart of the village and based at St. Mary's Church Rooms, Church Lane, adjacent to St. Mary's Church. Securing the new location for the pre-school is fantastic as it will provide the children and their parents with real benefits. Set in a quiet lane, the new building is far bigger and will provide additional space for both existing and new children to play and experience new toys and equipment. There are improved parking facilities for parents as well as a large

safe enclosed outside play area for the children to enjoy. The new location is also within a short walk to the Anstey Park and local library which will enable the pre-school to take the children on short outings to both facilities.

practices with the Anstey Pre-school. The new location will provide much needed affordable child care within the Anstey area and it will help to address a shortage of childcare spaces for 2-5 year olds, specifically within Anstey.

The Pre-school session times remain the same and will run from Monday to Friday 9am until 12pm, with an optional lunch club which takes the session to 1pm. In its first year the Pre-school has received on-going support and development from the Local Authorities Improvement Advisors as well as productive visits from Ofsted. As a result the standard and overall quality of learning achieved at the Pre-school is extremely high and has led to the Pre-school receiving much praise and positive comments from local parents. One parent who’s child Gabrielle attended the preschool comments “I could not believe how well my daughter developed and progressed as a result of attending this Pre-school. The staff are excellent and they provide a structured, fun and stimulating environment that just draws you in. My child's personal Learning Journey Folder that was kept to record my daughter’s development was second to none and it demonstrates the time, care and effort the Pre-school staff put into each child. I would not hesitate to recommend the pre-school to other parents in the Village”. Anstey Early Learning pre-school will continue to have the benefits of working in partnership with its ‘sister’ pre-school Thurcaston Early Learning Pre-school. Thurcaston Pre-school has been established for over 20 years and continues to receive high quality reviews and shares all good

Penny Garner the manager at Anstey Early Learning Pre-school comments “the original building was full to capacity within a year of opening and we had to turn parents away, which was really frustrating. We could not believe how quickly the reputation of the pre-school spread that it was doing so well. The new location means that the pre-school can accommodate those parents that were originally turned away”. The new location for Anstey Early Learning Pre-school at St. Mary's Church Rooms, Church Lane and will be fully functioning and opened after the summer holidays on Thursday 29th August. Any parents wanting to enquire and reserve a place for their child are encouraged to contact Lisa Sterland who is the registered provider on 07904 170 196 or lisaterland@outlook.com as soon as possible If the success of the first year is anything to go by then places will fill up fast!!!

POLICEMATTERS Welcome to this months Police Matters from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. Your crime figures for the month of JUNE are looking a lot healthier, so it would seem the active targeting of criminals and extra Police presence throughout the month has paid dividends. We must not rest on our laurels however, and we must all remain responsive and vigilant to any suspicious activity in the village. In particular, we would request your help with a worrying upward trend in ATM (Cash Dispenser) fraud. The Co-op on Cropston Rd and also the Natwest Bank in the Nook have been hit this month, with a ‘skimming’ device and mini camera being fitted to their machines. The Co-op also suffered this crime last month. The ‘Skimmer’ device is designed to stop your card being ejected from the ATM and the mini camera is placed to capture your PIN number when entered. Please follow these simple steps when using ATM’s: • Be aware of others around you and be alert to anyone acting suspiciously • If there is anything unusual on the ATM, or signs of tampering, do not use it and report it immediately (to Police or Bank/Store etc) • Do not allow yourself to be distracted by “well meaningâ€? strangers • Lean right into the ATM and always shield your PIN • Put your card and money away before leaving the ATM These simple steps should ensure you don’t become a victim. On the subject of ‘Distraction’ we have

also had one theft in the village that was carried out using a common distraction technique that has been seen all over the country. This involved 2 males who entered a shop in the village and ‘distracted’ a staff member by placing a large opened map on the table and asking for directions. The map itself was placed over an expensive mobile phone on the desk and as the males left with their map so did the mobile phone. This technique has been used in varying forms, including leaning into open passenger car windows to steal handbags / laptops off seats whilst asking for directions, and also in cafĂŠs and bars so please be aware of this. It is certainly unusual for the Anstey area, so let’s hope we don’t see any more. A timely reminder also, that some mobile phones and tablets have tracking facilities built into their software. Please ensure your phone or tablet has this tracking facility enabled, it can then be tracked and it could lead us straight to the thief! As there will be no ‘Your Local’ magazine published in July, please enjoy the rest of what summer we have had and we will update both July and August crime figures in the next available edition. If anybody has any information on crime they wish to pass on then please call CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 555 111. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society We were lucky to have a fine evening for the first of our summer outings on 18th June 2013, when a group of members and visitors gathered in Queniborough for a tour of the village. Our guide for the evening was lifelong village resident, Rosemary Smith, accompanied by fellow resident, Reg Agger. Rosemary, who currently is a Churchwarden and Heritage Warden, clearly has a great love for the place of her birth and has a wealth of knowledge about its history. The name Queniborough means Queen’s Manor or dwelling Place and is probably Saxon in origin. Local excavations unearthed a Saxon sword and other artefacts indicative of a Royal burial, hence the Royal name. We began our tour at the junction of Coppice Lane and Queniborough Road where we learnt that in the original village lay-out Queniborough Road did not exist. Looking directly across the road from the corner of Coppice Lane is an area known as The Banks where 20th century homes have been built, but it is still possible to see that, joined with Coppice Lane, this was the route of the main road through Queniborough, leading on to Rearsby. It is at this junction by Coppice Lane that Queniborough Road ends and becomes Main Street wherein lies the old part of the village – the next stage of our tour. In the 19th century Queniborough still had two Manor Houses, known as the Upper and Lower Halls. The majority of the cottages along Main Street formed part of each of the Halls’ estates and were allocated to estate workers. Most of the village shops are now located at the newer, 20th century end, along Queniborough Road, with the exception of the butcher’s shop which is still situated on Main Street. At the time of her birth, Rosemary’s father was the village butcher and the family lived above the shop. Rosemary can recall helping with the dairy work, as well as there being open drains along the road, not only for surface water, but also for drainage from the butcher’s premises!! Interspersed with some beautiful cottages, some dating back to the 16th century and many of which were thatched originally but now have tiled roofs, are various larger properties. The general change to tiles may have been brought about by two devastating fires at thatched cottages on different occasions in which each property was completely destroyed. As we progressed along, we saw the buildings that used to be the post office, the rather small village school and the sweet shop, all of which are now private residences. The walking part of our tour concluded at the parish church of St Mary which is well known for its impressive 14th century spire, possibly the highest in Leicestershire at 160 feet. Inside the church we were able to admire its outstanding features while Reg Agger gave a short talk about its history. We learnt that the chancel is the oldest part – possibly late Saxon or early Norman – while the nave dates from the 13th century. There are several significant memorials relating to various local families and benefactors to the church. Interestingly, the north (or Manor) door is sealed up and has not been used since 1875 following the death of the last Lady of the Manor. The superb stained glass contained in the east window, as well as that in the north and south windows, is the work of the renowned Leicestershire stained glass artist Theodora Salusbury (1875 – 1956) bearing the symbol of her work, a peacock monogram. We had further time to browse before finally departing after a very pleasant and interesting evening. Our next outing will be on Tuesday 16th July for a tour lasting approximately 2 hours around Castle Hill Park. The guide will be Stefan Cabaniuk, Parks Officer, Leicester City Council and we meet at 7pm at the Thurcaston Gate to the park on Anstey Lane. No pre-booking required. Further details from Peter Smith on 0116 2367365.

Farmers' markets set for country parks Leicestershire’s country parks are going to be offering the best of local produce.

ROLLS- ROYCE RETIRED EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION The Rolls-Royce Retired Employees Association took 100 members to Salford Quays for the June’s outing where they spent 5 hours wandering round the differing attractions. Most of the party spent time at the Lowry and The Imperial War Museum whist some wandered further to spend time at Old Trafford , home of Manchester United

The county council has linked up with Leicestershire Food Links for a series of farmers’ markets to be set up at both Watermead and Beacon Hill country parks over the coming summer months. The farmers’ market will be at Watermead North near Syston on Sunday 21st July. Produce on offer from 10am-5pm will include organic meats, cakes, dog treats, locallybrewed beer, olives and savoury pies.
