Rothley Under 10’s to compete at the National Football Centre Rothley Imps Under 10’s have been picked to represent Rotary District 1070, which covers a large part of the East Midlands (Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, part of Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Rutland) in a national soccer tournament.

The tournament due to take place on the 4th August at the English Football Association’s new National Football Centre, St. George’s Park located in the heart of England, is organised by the Rotary Club of Burton upon Trent.

The Imps have been nominated by the local Rotary Club of the Soar Valley, as part of the Club’s Youth Service programme. Other recent initiatives have ranged from helping young sportsmen/women, sports clubs and youth centres like the Soar Valley CafÊ, to Youth Exchanges and Rotary Star Awards.

Announcing the nomination, Soar Valley Rotary President Graham Martin said " We are delighted that the Rothley Imps are to participate in this prestigious tournament.

They will meet teams of boys and girls from around the country in a unique opportunity to play where England teams prepare for their games. The Rothley club have a great name in local football circles and we are confident that they will represent Soar Valley and Rotary District 1070 very well in the competition. We wish them every success."

Soar Valley Rotarians at the As a change from their meeting at Rothley Court this week (2nd June) Soar Valley Rotarians visited one of the many good causes which the Club has supported this year, The Warning Zone at Frog Island, Leicester.

Warning Zone

The Warning Zone provides a quality, high impact “Learning for Life” resource for year 6 youngsters from across Leicestershire and Rutland and this year, the Club has provided funding for year 6 pupils from Sileby and Wanlip to visit the Zone.

This visit enabled members to see for themselves the “handson” interactive learning experiences provided, over eight set-piece risks cenarios dealing with Buildingsites and Electricity; Risk on the Road; Alcohol and under-age drinking; Personal Safety; Railways; Risk around Water; Criminal Damage & Arson; and Fire Risk in the Home.

At the end of the evening members enjoyed a light supper and Club President Graham Martin presented a cheque to fundraiser Rachel Roark, for the final instalment of the Club’s funding for schools in the Soar Valley to attend the Zone this year, adding "It was great to see at first hand the range of zones, each demonstrating in an interesting and sometimes stark way the potential hazards that children face at home and on road locations in our communities.

We are pleased to be enabling local children to visit the Zone and better equip them to deal with some of the challenges on moving to their secondary school."

WENLO RDA Group is a local charity run Riding for the Disabled group entirely dependant upon volunteers and charity fund raising for its continuation. The WENLO Group is based at Meadow Riding School on Deans Lane, nr Woodhouse Eaves, run by Dawn Whitmore-Kirby and is part of a member group, National Riding for the Disabled Association, helping riders with disabilities achieve across the UK. Riders come from as far as Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire to ride with the WENLO group, this is due to Dawn being one of the very few qualified senior instructors in the country.

For over 20 years, the group has offered the opportunity for people with disabilities to ride and look after horses to help with their health, confidence, self esteem and physical therapy in a safe and secure environment. Alongside lessons, riders may enjoy various activities; riding around Beacon Hill national park, competing in regional or national events organised by National Riding for the Disabled & Special Olympics UK, or simply being involved in horse care as a sensory experience.

2012 began with buying WENLO's very own horse Charlie!! This was possible after a fund raising event, following which WENLO were kindly supported by a local organisation with a fantastic donation. Charlie came without any tack and this donation enabled WENLO to buy Charlie's saddle and bridle for which we thank them greatly for their generosity. We have been supported with charitable donations by several local organisations, for which we would like to say a big 'Thank you'. These acts of kindness help us to help our riders and WENLO Group to continue the good work!

Last year also saw Dawn WhitmoreKirby, WENLO's Volunteer Head Coach & Trainer being made one of the first Fellows of Riding for the Disabled in recognition for her 30 years of service to disabled riding. Later in the year, Dawn was then awarded the Barclay's Community Award for her service to disabled riding. Both of which are testament to the passion, dedication and time that Dawn gives for a fantastic charity, which makes such a positive difference to people with disabilities.

This year we are hoping to raise enough money to resurface the indoor school, costing approximately £8000! This is a necessity as the surface is becoming old, thin and uneven - which will soon be unsuitable for our disabled riders. We have started our fundraising already this year with sponsored events and competitions and will continue to raise funds where we can.

So far in 2013, two of Wenlo’s seasoned volunteers Kat and Jen raised £375 by running the Anglesey ‘Island Race’, a half marathon which they chose to fundraise for the Wenlo Riding for the Disabled Association group. They have both been volunteering with Wenlo since they were 12 years old, so nearly 10 years for Kat and around 12 for Jen! “We’ve seen the amazing help that this charity gives to disabled people, so we wanted to raise some money for them. When we started this half marathon training neither of us had done much in the way of long distance running....a few laps around the riding school with the horses was usually all we could manage before having to sit down” said Kat. They trained for four months and are both far more fit than they thought possible!

Jen’s quote “It was an amazing race, it's such a beautiful place, the route was breathtaking (in more ways than just stunning scenery, I have to say!!), the people so lovely, the marshalls, our partners, parents and family support was so motivating. As a bonus the weather was glorious and there was a Brass Band!” Thank you to everyone who supported them.

We would love to hear from anyone or any companies that can help us achieve this year’s target to be able to continue the good work that this charity does. None of the work that WENLO does for over 60 disabled riders a week would be possible without the dedicated team of volunteers which come from various backgrounds bringing a wealth of experience. To become a volunteer, you don't need to have any experience with horses as full training is given and you will become part of a friendly and supportive team. All you need is a smile and enthusiasm to want to help people with disabilities achieve their potential. We have a waiting list of riders desperate to join us, but we need more volunteers to accommodate them. If you have any spare time, could you help us?

Mountsorrel Townswomen’s Guild An enjoyable night was had by all at Barrow Upon Soar Conservative Club where they had their skittles evening, Jane Norris received a prize for the highest score. The evening ended with a hot supper.

The following week Colin Bower’s talk entitled “Curtain Up” gave a very interesting and humorous insight on the ups and downs of his 50 year career in show business.

He explained how difficult it was to get into show business, he has had many small parts in TV programmes including Coronation Street and The Onedin Line.

The competition “Theatre Memorabilia” was won by Jane Norris and 2nd Betty Dakin.

In June Linda Robinson visited again with “Another fine mess” she spoke about her very busy life involved with W.I. Farmers Markets and all the rules and regulations involved. She also brought along some produce and plants for sale – which sold well!

The competition a pressed flower was won by Betty Dakin and 2nd Lesley Hardy.

Saturday June 8th was the yearly Charity Faire on the Village Green, the weather was fine but a bit chilly, numerous stalls from the organisations in the village were well represented – it was good to see so many people and families.

Our next meeting June 20th is a social night entitled “How did you meet your partner”? Where I am sure we shall have a good night!

Bob Neil joins us on the 4th July with “Bits and Bobs” his topic of conversation!

While Stratford Upon Avon River Festival beckons on the 6th July.

The Guild meet at the Parish Rooms on Leicester Road on the 1st and 3rd Thursday in the month at 7.30 p.m. we have a varied programme throughout the year. For more information refer to the Mountsorrel Website.

Are you looking for something for your child to do over the summer which doesn’t break the bank? Last year, 52 children joined in the fun at Summer Stars Holiday Bible Club, run by Loughborough SDA Church.

Summer Stars is back and will be held from 9.30-11.30am, Monday 12th-Friday 16thAugust 2013 at Mountsorrel Methodist Church Hall. The club is for children aged 4-11 years and costs £2 per morning. We hope to welcome back old friends and perhaps see some new faces!

Children will be able to take part in a variety of activities each morning including: team games, craft, model making, action songs, drama, cookery, Bible Stories and parachute games. The morning also includes snack time and outdoor play if the weather is dry. At the end of the week, on the morning of Saturday 17th August, the children will have the opportunity to take part in a short concert to show family and friends what they have been doing at the club.

Last year, we enjoyed sharing lunch together after the concert and plan to do this again this year.

Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride is a success On Sunday, 28th April seventy two cyclists took part in this year’s Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride. An annual 20-mile circular sponsored ride around the beautiful Charnwood Forest in aid of Alex’s Wish – a local charity dedicated to finding better treatments for all children living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Emma Hallam, Trustee and Director at Alex’s Wish commented “We were thrilled to see so many cyclists take part this year, numbers were down until the last minute as people waited to see what the weather would do. We were very fortunate the weather was kind to us and it showed in the numbers that took part and the huge amount of money raised - £5,843.05 through registration fees, sponsorship and cake sales. We even saw cars stopping marshals along the route to give money to this worthy cause.”

“A huge thank you goes out to Rachel Porritt who helped organize the event, all the school mums who marshaled on the day and baked cakes, Rothley C of E School for providing the premises free of charge and everyone who took part in the Ride. Thanks also to our event sponsors The Bradleys Store and The Woodman’s Stroke who helped us to cover the costs involved.”

All money raised at this year’s event will go towards vital research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy – a rare genetic disorder that affects 1 in every 3,500 boys born. There are over 2,500 people with it in the UK at present and Alex a local boy has this condition. To date there are no cures, but a medical breakthrough is imminent and all the money raised will go towards bringing about much needed treatments to help delay the disease progression. The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust Charity Shield Football match

KASABIAN KICK OFF FOR JOE Sunday July 28th at 2pm

Quorn Football Club, Farley Way Stadium, Quorn, Leicestershire LE12 8RB Leicestershire rock legends Kasabian will be kicking off in support of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust in the first JHMT Charity Shield allstars game. An all-star Kasabian line-up led by bass player Chris Edwards will be up against a Leicester City Foxes Legends team including Muzzy Izzet and JHMT patron and former England and Tigers captain Martin Johnson..

The match is the prefect curtain raiser for the LCFC 2013/14 Championship campaign and is a must for all Kasabian and Foxes fans.

Joe Humphries died from Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome aged just 14 in October 2012 whist out running near his family home at Rothley in Leicestershire. Since then his family and friends have worked tirelessly to campaign for a better understanding of SADS, compulsory CPR training in schools and defibrillators in schools, community venues and sports clubs.

Kasbian’s Chris Edwards said: "Losing someone with so much potential as Joe at such a young age has been heart-breaking for his family and friends. But the work that his family and friends have done in such a short time since his death has been really inspirational. SADS is something that everyone should know about and the more people that are trained to act when someone's heart stops beating the more lives can be saved.

Farmers' markets set for country parks Leicestershire’s country parks are going to be offering the best of local produce.

Man of Steel is a visually stunning reboot of the Superman franchise with an exciting director at the helm. Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) is a young journalist on a mission, a mission that he has been aware of since as a young boy he showed feats of amazing strength. Having been sent into exile from a dying planet, he now needs to decide whether he is going to use his powers to protect his new planet, Earth, from the onslaught of villains, some of them out to get him in particular. Man of Steel is arguably the greatest of all Superman movies..

The county council has linked up with Leicestershire Food Links for a series of farmers’ markets to be set up at both Watermead and Beacon Hill country parks over the coming summer months.

The farmers’ market will be at Watermead North near Syston on Sunday 21st July. Produce on offer from 10am-5pm will include organic meats, cakes, dog treats, locally-brewed beer, olives and savoury pies.

Despicable Me 2 - U Despicable Me 2 is the follow-up to the smash-hit original with all the Minion action you could dream of. Gru (Steve Carell) is continuing to bring up his orphans, something that has brought out a softer side. So when he is recruited by the Anti Villain League to help eliminate a new villain with his insider knowledge of how a villain thinks, he’s all for it, especially as it means he will be let loose on a stash of brilliant new weapons.

And with the Minions helping out, what could possibly go wrong? Despicable Me 2 is a visually brilliant return to the madness.

The dates for the farmers’ markets are: Watermead (Sunday, July 21, September 8) and Beacon Hill (June 30, August 11 and September 29).

There are also plans for a “Picnic in the Park” event at Market Bosworth on August 4 which will include music, entertainment and locally sourced food.

Stonehill High School Ski Trip to Claviere, Italy During the Easter holiday a very enthusiastic group of pupils set off to ski!

Their destination was Claviere which is very close to the border with France giving the opportunity to ski in two countries.

We left England in snow and ice and arrived to absolutely perfect mountain weather – lots of sun and clear blue skies. This made ideal conditions for learning to ski: the pupils were mainly beginners and progressed very quickly to red slopes. The weather changed later in the week and we experienced heavy snow, fog and powder skiing.

“Skiing was brilliant! The best part was skiing into France with our instructor Matteo and going down the red slopes really fast! I really want to go again!

Creating a sculpture in the snow was amazing – we dug a huge tunnel in the snow - and Mr “Mole” Monks helped us to build it! A moonlight walk into France was absolutely fantastic and the views were great. The food was wonderful – pasta every night!” Joe and Frazer “This was the best trip ever – loads of fun! We had great instructors so we were all able to ski by the end of the week. The hotel was really nice and it was good sharing a room with all of the girls. For our May meeting, instead of the annual Coach outing, it was decided to hold a Garden Tea Party; Mrs. Jennifer Kennington kindly hosted this event. Unfortunately the weather did not “play ball” prohibiting sitting in the garden, but did show glimpses of sunshine from time to time to make the house bright and very pleasant. 24 Members attended to enjoy their Tea Party of tea and a superb selection of cakes provided generously by both Members and the Committee.

A Main Raffle consisting of five specific Raffle Prizes, was happily won by Mesdames Pat French (a wicker basket containing three bottles of mixed Wine); Gill Jefferson (a £25.00 Co-Operative gift voucher); Gill Smart (a framed floral hand painting by Sue Wakerley, our Deputy Leader); Sue Hopcroft (a meal voucher donated by “The Time and Plaice Restaurant in Rothley); and Elizabeth Meadows (a floral plant given by Brookside Nurseries, Anstey).

On arrival each Member was given a FREE raffle ticket so, In addition to the above Raffle, there was a Free Prize Draw which consisted of a pretty little watch won by Ann Farndon

and a gift selection of Tea Bags together with an attractive Teabag Saucer won by Elizabeth Chittenden.

This rather different Meeting for the Members, proved to be a very happy and successful occasion with a total of £111.00 was raised towards funds.

The Members attending our Meeting on the 10th June, enjoyed a very interesting talk given by Mrs Sheila Wiggins who had spent her life not only packing and unpacking her home contents but restructuring both hers and her children’s lives and education, during the course of 18 new homes.

Sheila met and married her husband in 1955 thereby becoming an “Itinerant RAF wife”. As he was an Engineer their lives initially were spent moving from the North down to the South. He was then drafted over to Aden during the crisis and then on to various assignments in Africa. Each move meant Sheila was able to extend her educating knowledge as a teacher and was able to find work. During their moves, there were no Mobile phones or the Internet and as her

husband was away from the family for some times up to 7 weeks, Sheila found herself having to cope with running the home and organising the education of the children, under some very difficult circumstances.

During her talk Sheila stressed the importance of family life and the need for stability within the family, despite the on-going need to travel to different places.

When the family returned to England. they lived in Bushey, near Watford before returning to the North. Scarborough was Sheila’s favourite abode but on retirement they found themselves in Leicester. She is currently moving into her new home still in Leicester, but she does crave a home back near the Sea. Sheila finished her talk with a beautiful poem about home life!.

Our next Meeting for the Club will be on Monday 12th August featuring Mr Brian Johnson with a talk entitled “And who lived in a house like this.. !” Thought provoking!!

Successful year for Discounted Advance National Trading Standards Forest Wood Fair Tickets Now Available To Purchase

Seizing £700,000 of fake goods, securing 18 convictions and cracking down on under-age alcohol sales are among Trading Standards' highlights for the last year.

Between April 2012 and March this year, Leicestershire County Council's Trading Standards service: • Seized approximately 40,000 items of counterfeit goods such as clothing, watches and digital media valued at £728,845.

• Brought 18 cases of unfair trading practices before the courts, all of which resulted in convictions. Fines and costs awarded totalled £28,650.

• Obtained formal agreements from a further 22 businesses to stop a variety of unfair trading practices • Took enforcement action following five cases involving the sale of alcohol to under 18s. This saw more stringent alcohol licensing to conditions to be applied, which avoided the need to make applications for ‘licence reviews’ by the appropriate district or borough council licensing committee • Confiscated £170,000 from offenders under the Proceeds of Crime Act • Provided free advice and guidance to 1,195 local and national businesses trading within the County, to help them comply with their legal responsibilities.

Pam Posnett, cabinet member for Trading Standards, said: “Trading Standards has been doing some fantastic work, helping businesses to trade fairly and keep residents safe.

“We would always urge anyone with any concerns when buying goods or services to get in touch and let us know.”

Head of trading standards, David Bull, said: “I am pleased with the service’s enforcement activities, which have been well targeted using our intelligence led approach.”

Volunteers urge people to support Loughborough Children’s Hospice

Council supports 100 first-time buyers More than 100 homes have been bought by first-time buyers, thanks to support from Leicestershire County Council. The council has been able to help 106 people obtain low-cost mortgages, totalling £12 million.

Two Leicestershire volunteers are urging people to help life-limited young people and their families at a Loughborough hospice by donating time.

Following on from Volunteers’ Week, which was held in June, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People in the East Midlands hopes to recruit volunteers for its shops, in the community and at the hospice, especially in the telephone team.

Last September, the county council agreed to lend Lloyds TSB £10 million, enabling it to offer low-cost mortgages to up to 400 firsttime buyers. Under the scheme, buyers have to find a deposit of just five percent.

Chloe Bakewell (20) and Cara Allen (19) have been volunteering at Rainbows for three weeks as part of a Job Centre scheme.

Today, the council revealed that the first £4 million of its investment has: • Led to 106 house purchases being completed, with mortgages worth £12 million • Led to 182 mortgage applications being approved, worth £20 million County council leader Nick Rushton said: “I’m delighted that more than 100 firsttime buyers have got a home, thanks to support from the county council.

“We know first time buyers are struggling, so it makes sense to lend the bank some of our reserves, to help them get on the property ladder.

“This helps people into homes, boosts the economy and enables the council to get its money back, with interest, from the bank.”

Carl Knott, 27 and Zoe Scott, 25, have bought a house west of Leicester through the scheme. Zoe said: “We were finding dealing with letting agents frustrating and dreamed of having a home of our own. However, with two young children, saving for a deposit seemed impossible.

“We went online to find out more about this scheme and things moved really quickly from there.”

Stephen Noakes, mortgage director at Lloyds TSB, said: “With the launch of Lend a Hand in Leicestershire, we’re making the housing market more accessible to more people.

“Helping people to buy their first home is crucial in achieving and maintaining a sustainable housing market.”

ROLLS- ROYCE RETIRED EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION Two coach loads of The Rolls-Royce Retired Employees Association enjoyed a days outing to York in May. The group split into many sub groups with many wandering round “The Shambles” some visiting one of York’s many museums and others spending time at The National Railway Museum.

The second meeting of the ladies group ”This that and the other” also took place last week where they meet to share skills including knitting , card-making and needlework. Future plans include theatre visits etc.

Another first for the Association was a visit to the Rolls- Royce Heritage centre in Derby, 16 members (the ladies outnumbering the men) were taken on a tour round the centre where they saw many aero engines from WW1 to the present day along with a full size Spitfire fighter and much more company memorabilia.

Future trips include day trips to Salford Quays ,Whitby ,and London to see Wicked there are currently available places on all these trips. Also planned are three further trips round The Rolls-Royce Heritage Centre. A newly formed walking group have short walks planned for Bradgate Park and further walks in Derbyshire The Association meet monthly on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 1-00pm at Rolls-Royce Welfare on Moor Lane. STARLIGHT SUMMER SHOW A GREAT SUCCESS Well done to all students that took part in this years summer show which was held recently at Groby Community college. Starlight’s end of term show was a mixture of musical theatre and dance which was performed over four nights to rave reviews.

All the students performed brilliantly and had a great time said principle Tracy Liggins, we have been really busy this year and have just spent the last weekend in Skegness at the British Theatre Dance Association’s Gala weekend where the students performed on Butlin’s Centre Stage. Everyone had a great time and we are looking forward to next year already.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Miss Lilie Scott, a teacher and student of Starlight from the age of three, as she graduates this summer from Leicester College of Performing Arts after completing their 3 year course.

Although it will be sad to see her leave, we wish her success in her career as a professional dancer.

Loughborough Lawn Tennis Club have become recycling collectors for international recycling group Terracycle in order to raise money for charity. We are part of the company's 'Tassimo Bridage' which means we are looking to collect used Tassimo discs from anyone in the area to send off for recycling (a number of the discs cannot be recycled in regular local plastic recycling collections). In return, Terracycle will award points for each item recycled for us to turn in to cash to award to charities.

At the time of going to press, we're the only Tassimo Brigade in the Charnwood area and We're looking to collect as many Tassimo discs and foil packaging wrappers as possible to make our environmental and charitable contributions as large as possible so please contact Jonny Rudge at jonny@insideouttennis.com or bring them to our club (situated at the bottom of Ingle Pingle lane, off Forest Road, just before Emmanuel Church and opposite the William Davis offices).

Finally the sun has begun shining, and after last year’s damp and dismal summer, it feels fantastic to be able to get out in the garden and watch things grow.

Although we may not have enjoyed it at the time, the combination of rain and sunshine over the last few weeks has done wonders for the growth of our plants.

Herbaceous perennials such as Hostas, Heuchera and Alchemilla are romping away, and even small plants can really help to fill gaps quickly in borders if they have the right conditions. Remember to plant herbaceous plants in groups of three for a really natural, flowing feel to the border.

Unfortunately, along with fantastic plant growth at this time of year comes those naughty weeds. Just as we think that we are on top of the weeds in the borders, they have another growth spurt. There is a common misconception that the more plants that are in a garden, the more maintenance it takes. However, plants actually drown out the areas for the weeds to seed, and in some cases, hide the weeds entirely. If you have a large gap in the garden, think about replanting with a low groundcover plant such as Hebe pinguifolia ‘Pagei’, Juniper ‘Blue Star’, or for that very awkward, dry, shady spot, try Vinca minor ‘Ralph Schugart’.
