Highcliffe Summer Fair

Interesting ideas for your conser vatory...

Fun, games and a baking competition are the order of the day for the annual Summer Fair at Highcliffe Primary School on Saturday 8th June.

With escalating heating costs in the winter and with glass/polycarbonate roofs acting as green houses during the summer, is it time to re evaluate your conservatory in line with modern requirements. Charnwood conservatories specialise in the remodelling of existing conservatories. We start by removing the existing roof covering and running in new structural elements to the roof where necessary.

The Great Highcliffe Bake Off, now in its second year, will be the centrepiece of an exciting afternoon and everyone is encouraged to enter and show off their skills. Two age groups, under-sixteens and over-sixteens can submit one entry into each of the categories: one large cake, four identical cupcakes or six identical biscuits. Awards will be given to the winners of each category and there is a prize for best in show in each age group. Visitors to the fair will be able to sample the delights afterwards as the entries are sliced and sold to raise money for the school.

Or perhaps... If you really want to give your conservatory a more timeless quality, house

Late May/June 2013

gives your conservatory a more solid feel and a freshness that only comes with a newly decorated area of your home.

Also featuring on the day will be a car boot sale, a market of homemade crafts, Indian food stall, bouncy castle, raffle – with prizes donated by generous businesses across the village, a coffee shop and entertainment provided by local groups.

Decorating your home gives personality to your individual tastes and good lighting is essential in this.

The event is organised by Highcliffe Parent Teachers Association. Kelly Emerson, chair of the association says of the event: ‘Our Summer Fair has been going for several years now and it goes from strength to strength. It’s our main fundraising event of the year and has been fantastically supported by pupils, parents and carers alike. We’re thrilled that our Bake Off competition is being run again and we hope for many entries from all ages.’

We can help you to design and install lighting to suit your desires, with the amazing effects that modern LED technology can create, or the concealed contemporary and beautiful lighting can create the atmosphere you’ve always enjoyed in your most peaceful of rooms.

The Summer Fair runs from 1-4pm on Saturday 8th June. Entrance is 50p per adult, free for school children, and can be paid at both Greengate Lane and Elmfield Avenue gates. If you would like more information or are interested in taking a stall for the homemade craft market or a pitch for the car boot sale, please email HighcliffePTA@outlook.com or visit www.facebook.com/HighcliffePTA.

Under 10 Foxes qualify for National Youth Futsal Finals On Saturday 4th May, Birstall United Juniors Under 10 Foxes finished runners up in the FA Regional Youth Futsal Finals which has earned them a place at the National Youth Futsal Finals in Birmingham where they will represent the East Midlands. The national finals will take place at the end of June and the Foxes will play teams from across the UK. The regional tournament, which was held at Moulton College in Northamptonshire, saw them come up against teams that won the respective futsal leagues from Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire. Pictured (not in order): Daniel Yadav, Dylan Sands, Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced Emillio Stavrou, Emmanuel Kambulu, Finley Hewitt, Joel small sided football game that is Hughes, Matty Hull, Parees Patel, Parmvir Jurm, widely played across the world Vivek Parekh. Louis Marsden (not in picture) and is officially recognised by both UEFA and FIFA. The nature of the game places a large emphasis on technical skill and ability in situations of high pressure.

Phil Hughes, manager of the Foxes said: “As you would expect in a regional tournament, the standard was very high indeed and so to qualify, undefeated, for the nationals from such a tough group is a great achievement. The kids have adapted to this format of the game really well indeed and they are all seeing a big improvement to their skill levels and their confidence on the ball. What was very encouraging for me was that the organisers of the regional tournament commented on how well the kids were passing the ball around and as a manager that makes me very proud to hear. The kids are all really excited about going to Birmingham at the end of June and representing the East Midlands and it’s going to be a great experience for them to play against teams from all over the UK. This is a great bunch of kids and they are a credit to their club and their village and we should be very proud of them.”

LOROS Coast to Coast trek If you like walking and beautiful countryside you can’t get many better walks in the world than the 192 mile Wainwright Coast to Coast trek. Anyone who has been inspired by Alfred Wainwright’s walks or the follow up recently on TV with Julia Bradbury (recently taken on the role as a LOROS Patron) may be interested in taking up the challenge of joining a team from LOROS in walking in Wainwright’s footsteps on the Coast to Coast Trek. Wainwright believed in getting to high land to get the best views and therefore the route from St Bees in Cumbria through to Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire is somewhat hilly! The route will be completed over 14 challenging days, averaging about 14 miles per day, and takes you through some of the best countryside in Britain, including the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the remote North Yorkshire moors. The appropriately named LOROS Senior Fundraiser, Adrian Walker, who completed the walk for the eighth time last year, is planning to undertake the journey once more on 18th September 2013 with a team of approximately 10 other walkers. The 2012 team (pictured at the finish of the walk) raised a record amount of just over £22,000 taking the walk total in excess of £160,000 over the past years. It is hoped the 2013 walk will also be very successful.

Tennis ball appeal produces a 'fantastic response' Country park rangers have been inundated with tennis balls following an appeal to help protect harvest mice at Watermead North Country Park. Adrian Walker, along with other volunteers organises training walks to ensure walkers gain their fitness and pace sufficient to complete the walk comfortably with no injuries. Adrian said “It gives participants the opportunity to get fit, learn about map and compass skills, learn first aid/survival tips, raise funds for a great local charity, LOROS, and achieve immense satisfaction in completing one of the best long distance walks available in the UK. This really is a “must do” event in your lifetime.” The cost to participate in the walk is approximately £650 to include all your food, transport, onward transfer of bags, accommodation and support driver. The estimate doesn’t cover the bar bills at pubs etc though! It is also expected that walkers pledge to raise at least £1,000 for LOROS via individual and company sponsorship, organising events, bucket collections etc.

An appeal to the general public to donate around 200 balls has met with a 'fantastic response' and rangers at the Leicestershire County Council beauty spot will now start making artificial nests for the tiny mammals at the Wanlip Road location. Recent flooding had flattened areas of the eight-acre Norfolk reed at Watermead where the mice prosper, causing damage to nests and nesting areas, and prompting the appeal

This really is a great opportunity to raise much needed funds for LOROS and complete a fantastic challenge.

Dale Osborne, senior ranger at Watermead, said: “We’ve had people turning up with tennis balls from far and wide – the response has been absolutely fantastic. We wanted about 200 balls and we’ve now got more than enough so we don’t really need anymore.

Other walks organised by LOROS include the 84 mile Hadrian’s Wall Walk, the 6 or 13 mile Walk on the Wildside on September 8th, or the 5 mile Winter Walk on December 27th.

“I want to thank everyone who has contributed and they have each played a part in helping to protect the mice."

Anyone who is interested in taking part in any of the walk challenges should contact Adrian Walker, on 0116 2318431 or e-mail adrianwalker@loros.co.uk.

New online map highlights Leicestershire footpaths

Birstall Rugby Football Club Summer Touch Rugby Sessions

A new online map showing Leicestershire’s footpaths, byways and bridleways has been launched. Residents and visitors who enjoy exploring the county by walking or riding can access the map by logging on to www.leics.gov.uk/pathsmap

Every Thursday 7-8pm May 30th – June 27th

Developed by Leicestershire County Council, it features approximately 1,896 miles (3,052km) of public rights of way. The guide is based on Google maps so users can easily zoom in on featured paths and also use the satellite option, which gives detailed aerial photographs, to get more of an idea of the surrounding landscape. Ian Drummond, Assistant Director for Transportation at Leicestershire County Council, said: “This map is a great easy-to-use tool for anyone who loves exploring Leicestershire via its footpaths, byways and bridleways.

Ladies and Gents 15 years old and over

“This month is National Walking Month and we are hoping that more people will pull their walking shoes on and get out and about in the county. "This map is a great way of helping residents and visitors to do just that.” The map also shows walking routes that are promoted by the council. Clicking on the routes provides links for further information, including some leaflet downloads. - The online mapping is for guidance. Anyone who is concerned with legal issues relating to the exact routes of public rights of way should consult the master definitive map – more details about this are available at www.leics.gov.uk/maps For more information on National Walking Month, including a list of free guided walks that are taking place in the county, visit: www.leics.gov.uk/walking

Your child is in danger Children are safer playing out in the street or their local park than on the internet, says a recent report from the NSPCC. We may warn youngsters about ‘stranger danger’, but we are failing to equip them for new ‘emerging threats’ that are waiting for them on social networking sites and through phenomena such as ‘sexting’ or ‘cyberbullying’. Many children as young as five spend up to six hours a week on the internet, and a quarter of 11 and 12 year olds now see something on the internet every day which worries them. The report also warns that almost three out of 10 children aged 11 – 16 have been bullied over the internet or through a smartphone. No wonder experts are urging parents to take steps to protect their children from these very real threats. This CAN be done, but children need help.

BIRSTALL YOUTH CLUB Helen McNulty, Senior Youth Worker, reported on progress in the last twelve months. During the autumn of 2012 they noticed a drop in numbers attending on Wednesday and Friday and began to look at provision for younger people. After consultation with the young people attending on Friday it was agreed that the Wednesday evening target age range would change from 12-19 to 8-11. 58 people attended the open evening and after 20 weeks the average attendance is 35. This change has been well supported by parents and much positive feedback has been received. The decision of Charnwood Borough Council to refuse funding is being challenged as the need is obvious. Examples of typical activities were given, including baking, all of which avoid the use of computers. The trial of the Wednesday provision ends at the end of April and a request will be made to the Parish Council to make it permanent. It was agreed that this would be placed on the agenda for May.

Coffee Morning Saturday 15 June Birstall Methodist Womens Group are holding a Coffee Morning on Saturday 15 June between 10am and 12 noon at the Methodist Church, Wanlip Lane, Birstall. There will be cake stall, tombola, books and plants so do come along to grab a bargain. The proceeds will go to our charity Motor Neurone Disease Association (local branch). Contact Margaret on 0116 2671181 for any more information

Be an Egg-cellent Gardener

Gardeners are being urged to take extra care this spring. The promise of warmer weather gets many of us thinking about trimming or removing garden greenery, but at the same time our feathered friends are busy building their nests, laying their eggs and munching their way through caterpillars and other pests.

A Holiday Club will be running again in September from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm. Meals will be offered, some being made by the young people themselves. £3,435 has been received from Leics County Council for this project. Helen expressed her gratitude for the support of the parish council and parents and requested that the parish council set them targets for the coming year, ideas offered include sport, gardening and grow your own vegetables for which an allotment might be needed. External funding of £4-4,500 is needed to continue Wednesday evenings as the number of attendees requires more youth workers. Possible sources of funding include ‘Awards for All’ and the Amy Winehouse foundation.

BIRSTALL MAKE FAST START Birstall Golf Club’s mens’ team has made a fast start to the new league season, with a thumping win over The Leicestershire to start the season, and a great close victory at Kirby Muxloe. The team over-whelmed Leicestershire by six and a half matches to one and a half on the opening day of the new league season, but had a much tougher match at Kirby Muxloe, where they eventually won by four and a half matches to three and a half. They now have a break until June when they face Cosby at home and then Whetstone away, with the reverse fixtures taking place in July and August.

Although all nesting birds have legal protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act from the moment they start building the nest until the young have fledged, it only takes a moment for a nest to be accidentally destroyed. Birds such as robins, sparrows and blackbirds are in decline and need all the help they can get, especially after a harsh winter. Neil Pilcher from the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust said “We ask everyone to be careful as dense hedges such as Leylandii are good nesting sites, but any hedge, tree, shrub or ivy should be quickly checked just before starting work. If not doing the work themselves, householders should ask their contractor to check for nests too. If in doubt, the work should be postponed until the end of August when the breeding season is over ". For further advice contact the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust on 0116 2720444 or e-mail info@lrwt.org.uk

Reverend Kerry Emmett has retired. On Saturday 20th April 2013 about 60 people gathered at Christ Church & St Peter’s Church of England (Controlled) Primary School Mountsorrel, to celebrate Revd Kerry Emmett’s eight and half years in Mountsorrel. We remember on the evening of Thursday 9th September 2004, Christ Church was the venue for the licensing of the Revd Kerry Emmett as Priest-in-Charge of the Benefice of Mountsorrel and at the same service the licensing, to the same benefice, of Mrs Patricia (Tricia) Emmett as Lay Reader. Both of the licensing was by the Venerable Ian Staines Archdeacon of Loughborough. The Benefice of Mountsorrel includes the Parish of Christ Church and the Parish of St Peter, Mountsorrel. The Diocese of Leicester encouraged parishes to group themselves into Mission Partnerships and the two churches in Mountsorrel joined with eight other churches. 15th October 2008 was the launch of East Akeley South Mission Partnership at Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College, Woodhouse. At a service at St Peter’s on 30th November 2008 Mrs Christine Butcher was licensed as the Evangelist to the benefice by the Venerable Paul Hackwood, the new Archdeacon of Loughborough. In November 2009 the new toilets and extended kitchen at Christ Church were dedicated by the Venerable David Newman, the current Archdeacon of Loughborough. At Christ Church on Sunday 14th November 2010, Assistant Bishop Christopher licensed Revd Marian Bennett as Non-Stipendiary assistant minister to the benefice. Marian left us early this year. During Kerry’s time, Christ Church has been repainted, toilets renewed and lead stolen from the roof was replaced by stainless steel, while St Peter’s is currently being remodelled at the back. For a few years Kerry had chaired the ‘Churches together in Mountsorrel’ (formally ‘Mountsorrel Christian Council’). We have enjoyed having Kerry and Tricia with us and have appreciated the pastoral work, support and encouragement. To show our appreciation Kerry and Tricia were presented with paintings, one of the inside of Christ Church, the other of the inside of St Peter’s, both painted by local artist Ray Twigg. On Sunday the 21stApril, at the 11am service, Christ Church presented a pair of commemorative mugs. Revd Kerry Emmett’s last services were on Sunday 21st April, 11.00am at Christ Church and 6.00pm at St Peter’s. However, he came back to take a wedding at Christ Church on 4th May, Regular Sunday services continue at 11.00am. Fun@4 which is our monthly 'Messy Church' continues on Sunday 2nd June at 4.00pm with the theme 'Who is God? This is a chance to see what God is like through the beauty of the world He created. Fun@4 is a congregation of our church that meets from 4pm on the first Sunday each month (except Bank Holiday weekends). Everyone is welcome; it is a time for all ages, lasting approximately 1hr 30min to 2 hours. On 7th July the theme is 'Who is Jesus?' and on 4th August the theme is 'Who is the Holy Spirit?' We are having a Summer Fayre at Christ Church on Saturday 22nd June starting at 10.30am. Please come and support us. Anyone interested in knowing more about the Christian Faith please contact Christine Butcher on 0116 2376122. If you need to contact the church please phone or text 07967255745. FILMREVIEW

NEW RECRUITS IN THE SWING

The Hangover Part III - 15

Birstall Golf Club is enjoying an up-surge in interest from beginners following the Midlands Golf Week.

The Hangover Part III reunites the original cast and director for one final episode of disastrous goings-on. Despite everything that happened there last time, Phil (Bradley Cooper), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and the rest of the gang are back in Las Vegas, determined not to repeat the mistakes of last time. Fat chance. Before long they are embroiled in serious crime, are investing in giraffes and are generally up to their ears in trouble, some of it life-threatening. The Hangover Part III is the final masterpiece in one of the maddest trilogies in film history.

Assistant Professional Ross Bradshaw ran a range of classes over the week, which attracted some 40 first-timers and beginners, and – as a result - now has a regular group of up to 13 ladies who meet once a week as well as a juniors group:

Epic - U Epic is a dizzyingly beautiful 3D animation with an amazing cast from the makers of Ice Age and Rio. Mary Katharine (Amanda Seyfried) is the daughter of a professor studying nature deep in the forest. One day, when he doesn’t come back, she goes in search of him and is caught in a leaf shower that magically changes her. Now she’s smaller than most woodland creatures, she’s recruited by a band of tiny warriors in a battle to save their world from evil forces. Epic is an exciting adventure with a message and cast that also includes Colin Farrell, Christoph Waltz and Chris O’Dowd.

“They are all complete beginners who are keen to try the game. It’s a great relaxing past-time that gets you out in the fresh air and helps keep you fit. The fact that we’ve been having some better weather lately helps a lot! “I am happy to set up beginner sessions for anyone as and when they want”, says Ross, who can be contacted via Birstall G C Professional Shop (0116 267 5245) or on 07872 067505.

Rotar y Spr ing Clean Two local organisations teamed up on Saturday (27th) to spring clean parts of Mountsorrel often used by young people. Soar Valley Rotarians joined volunteers and young people from the Sorrel Café as part of the annual “Rotary Spring Clean”, when clubs across the country invite their communities to join them in creating neighbourhoods to be proud of. Before starting out from the Sorrel Youth Café on the Green, the group were kitted out with high visibility jackets and equipment for the morning’s clean up. Despite the occasional shower, volunteers managed to collect a large amount of litter, glass and other objects, before returning to the Café for well-earned refreshments.

Rotary President Graham Martin and the team before leaving the Green, Mountsorrel

Organiser Rotarian Peter Bickley thanked everyone for their efforts adding that “It is really great to see so many volunteers working together for the benefit of the local community and particularly so many young people under the direction of the Sorrel Cafe Youth Leader Graham Lloyd.”

Boost green spaces with a Stepping Stones grant Funding is available for Leicestershire communities keen to boost green spaces for people and wildlife. Up to £2,500 is available towards schemes to help improve parks, nature reserves and other green areas. Now in it’s third year, the Connecting People and Wildlife fund is open to parish / town councils and community groups within the Stepping Stones Project area who want to encourage community action and involvement in their local green space. Andy Jackson, from the Leicestershire County Council based Stepping Stones Project which is offering the funding, said: “This is a great opportunity for communities to help make their neighbourhoods greener. “We can offer funding of up to 75 per cent of the total cost of schemes. However, the deadline is July 31 so we would urge people to get their applications in now.” Previous groups that have benefited include a Place to Grow in Enderby, which supports people with a range of mental illnesses, physical disabilities and learning difficulties. Money from the fund went towards improving access for all and restoring the wildlife pond. Grant funding also supported the planting of a community woodland and orchard in Whetstone and access improvements at the local nature reserve in Glen Parva. The development of proposals must involve the community and schemes must show how the local community will benefit from the environmental improvements. For more information and an application pack call: 0116 305 7221 or 7264. For more on the Stepping Stones Project and the area it covers visit: www.leics.gov.uk/stepping_stones

May the Fourth be with you. Star Wars fan Robert Rasin was delighted when his fiancé Lydia Martindale agreed to set their wedding date as May 4th. The wedding took place at Christ Church in Mountsorrel and Lydia arranged for several of Rob’s friends to form an arch with light sabres as the newly married couple left the church. May 4 is considered a holiday by Star Wars fans because of the popularity of a pun - "May the fourth be with you", based on the phrase "May the force be with you" which is a quote from the Star Wars films. The couple live in Mountsorrel and Rob works at Bargain Booze in the village. Lydia works for Terri Ann’s 123 diet plan, having lost about 4 stone with the plan herself in preparation for the wedding. Lydia is a volunteer with the Charnwood BRAS, a peer support group offering breastfeeding reassurance and support to new and prospective parents. Several of the other volunteers and the health visitors who work with the team were also outside the church forming another arch with a large collection of knitted breasts and ribbons to show their thanks for all the work Lydia has done for the group to promote breastfeeding and in running antenatal workshops (see photo).

Rolls- Royce Retired Employees Association The Rolls- Royce Retired Employees Association ‘s April excursion was to Blenheim Palace where 50 members enjoyed a day wandering round the extensive grounds on a breezy but otherwise lovely day. For many members this was their first visit to the Oxfordshire stately home and the birthplace of Winston Churchill.

The Association is starting to branch out with other activities a new walking group made its’ debut walk on a bright, sunny St George’s Day. Around 20 set off from Willington for a 4.5 mile walk along the canal, crossing the fields and walking into Findern. From there they crossed back over the canal and resumed the walk along the towpath back to Willington. A trip down the road to the Cherry Tree Farm for lunch ended a very pleasant outing. Another new group had its inaugural meeting on 24th April. The primary aim is that it will be a social group with a view to encouraging people to try all sorts of new things. There will be the opportunity for people to learn or improve on skills such as knitting, crochet, sewing etc, but other ideas included pottery painting, trying out new eating places, visits to the cinema and theatre, and having guest speakers visit the group, in addition to having demonstrations of card making, cookery etc. The sky’s the limit! The first meeting of the group will be on 22nd May and initially it will be held every two weeks. Anyone interested in coming along or with any ideas should contact Sheila Furniss on 01332 516744. Those attending thought that the group name of “THIS, THAT AND THE OTHER” would cover all eventualities!

High pressure sales won't wash say Trading Standards Trading Standards officers have issued a warning about rogue traders offering to jet wash drives and patios in the county. The traders have been calling door-to-door and use a range of tactics to pressurise consumers in to having the work done. Leicestershire County Council’s Trading Standards Service is urging people to be vigilant. They have received a total of nine complaints since February in the Melton and Loughborough areas where customers have paid between £80 - £5,500 for work that has been badly done. The traders usually use professional looking leaflets, which are no guarantee that the trader is reputable. They also ask to use the customer’s water supply to carry out the work. They usually start the work straight away and don’t give the customer a written seven day ‘cooling off’ period required by law. Once work starts, the traders will identify other jobs that they could complete on the property. David Bull, Head of Leicestershire County Council Trading Standards Service, said: ‘Residents should always be extremely wary of traders who cold call door-to-door. “We frequently see cases where rogue traders have convinced consumers to have work done that is not required and is usually over priced and badly done. “Our advice is never to agree to any work without getting at least three written quotes from a number of well known or local traders.” Information on dealing with doorstep sellers, as well as special no cold calling stickers, to find a reputable trader from the Trustmark scheme is available at: www.leics.gov.uk/tradingstandards If you wish to report any rogue traders email: telltradingstandards@leics.gov.uk Top tips if approached by doorstep sellers: • Do not agree to have any work carried out on the doorstep without getting written quotations from other trader. • Say you are not interested and do not let the caller into you home. • Rogue traders often give name and address details that are false, so if you can, try and make checks about any trader you are thinking of employing. • If you receive information through your door advertising home improvement or other services, think carefully before you respond, as glossy, professional leaflets can be used by rogue traders to give you the impression they are genuine businesses.

Little Markfield Farm Open Day This year’s open day is on the 9th June, and we hope that it is going to be bigger and better than the last year as the family is celebrating 100 years of working the land at Little Markfield Farm. This year we will be having cookery demonstrations, sausage making demonstrations along with craft and food stalls, vintage tractors and machinery, stationary engines, and of course all the animals. Last year’s event raised £1200 for Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance as well as for St Michael and All Angels Church of Markfield. There are a few stalls left - if you would like one, contact us on (01530) 242173.

Add to this that the 1st XV finished 2nd in their league whilst the 2nd XV won theirs means that on Friday 17th May Birstall will be represented at the Leicestershire RFU awards dinner to collect four honours to mark what has been the most successful season in their history! On The Bank Holiday Sunday 5th May, President's Day brought the season to a jubilant close, with the 2nds playing a winning game against a Delve's Invitational team, and the 1sts claiming victory against a President's Invitational XV. A good crowd turned out to support and enjoy a BBQ and beer tent on what turned out to be a warm and sunny day. Presentations concluded a successful day and the customary celebrations continued down at The Plough! Many thanks to everyone who has offered their support this season, whether through playing, sponsoring, support or taking part in our social events. The atmosphere down at the club remains ever positive and we look forward to a brand new season with the 1st team joining The Midland league structure and the 2nd team gaining promotion to Leicestershire league 4!

COOKERS:

Birstall brought the season to a close with a spectacular finish, scooping four pieces of silverware from both the leagues and two cups. In the President's Spring Cup they rode to a hard fought victory against Burbage winning 24-20 at Belgrave. Spurred on by this success, they then entertained Ashby at Vipers on a sunday 28th April, narrowly missing out in a very close game to a converted Try in the closing minutes to conclude 19-26.

Once again Richard Hill School PTA are organising an Open Gardens event in the villages of Thurcaston and Cropston. This will take place on the weekend of 25th and 26th June.

Gardens will be open from 2pm – 6pm on both days; tickets will be £4 each (accompanied children and wheelchair users free) and will be valid for both days. They can be purchased on the day from any of the Open Gardens or, from Monday 13th June, from the Richard Hill School Office, Anstey Lane, Thurcaston (Mon to Fri 9am-3pm only please). Proceeds from this weekend will go to the School’s PTA funds which help pay for a number of things around the school, of late these have included playground markings, many new library and reading books, and equipment for the school garden and after school clubs. For more information about this event please have a look at our new web site www.tcog.org.uk or contact Linda on 0116 2363872 or email richardhillpta@aol.com. Why not come along, with your family and friends, and support this great community event? We look forward to seeing you.

Ryan Topley and Adam Dalby won Birstall G C’s Coronation Mens Trophy with 47 points in a better ball stableford, ahead of Jeff Hill & Dave Gorey (46 pts) and Tom Cooper & Richard Topley (44 pts). Paul Frith & Josh Farrell’s 67 was the best gross score.

Saturday 1st June 2013

This charity concert is held in the beautiful grounds of Wistow Hall, by kind permission of the Brooks family, and is a great night out for all ages. Bring your own picnic and enjoy a wonderful evening listening to music by “Junction 21” (an 18 piece swing band), and the award winning all female brass band “Boobs & Brass”. This is then followed by a fabulous Firework Display in front of Wistow Hall. To see a 90-second video taken of the concert last year, go to www.wistow.com and click on the arrow in the middle of the big picture of Wistow Hall on the Home Page. The concert is supporting “LOROS” (Hospice Care for Leicestershire & Rutland), the “Prince’s Trust” (helps change young lives), and the “Breast Cancer Campaign” (which funds research into breast cancer). Wistow is situated 5 miles from Market Harborough, signed from the A6 at Great Glen and Kibworth and the A5199 at Kilby. Gates open 5.30pm : Music starts 7.30pm : Finale & Grand Fireworks Display 10.00pm.

There will be a number of gardens open across the two villages of various types…rose gardens, family gardens, a water garden , vegetable gardens and many others.
