Another Successful Fund Raising Year For Brookvale High School!

The students of Mississippi House are thrilled to announce another spectacular year of fund raising, throughout 2013/14, culminating in over £4,000 being raised for both Cancer Research and LOROS. Led, once again, by the Head of Mississippi House, Harvey Singh, our students (and staff) took part in a variety of fund raising activities including: • • • •

Our annual performance of ‘Brookvale’s Got Talent!’ Bucket collections Staff Christmas Show Year 9 sponsored walk to and around Bradgate Park

We are extremely proud that one of our Year 9 students, Tom Burbage, (who has now moved on to Year 10 at Groby College), raised a staggering amount of money for this cause, hence the decision to split the proceeds this year between the two charities.

 Â? Â? Â? Â? Â?Â? Â?Â? Â? Â? Â? Â?Â?Â

We were delighted that representatives from the two charities were able to come along to Brookvale, to receive the cheque from our Headteacher, Katie Rush, and a selection of last year’s Year 9 students – now Year 10 at Groby College, along with our current Year 9 House Captains (pictured). This photograph was taken in our new Dining Hall, which opened at the beginning of this academic year, and has been a marvellous addition to our school site, providing extra seating for 180 students, to enjoy dining at break and lunch times, alongside the wonderful backdrop of Bradgate Park. Well done, Mississippi!! Another year of tremendous fund raising success. Here’s to the next!

Ratby Library Group A significant change occurred at the first Ratby Parish Council meeting of 2015 in that it decided not to press forward with its own bid for the management of our library but instead to support the Ratby Library Group. This is good news for our library project and for the village as a whole. Inside this edition of Your Local is a multi-page questionnaire. Please take a little of your time to complete your responses to it and drop it back into any one of the 5 questionnaire boxes that will be positioned around the village? Your questionnaires are needed back by 14th February please.

It’s hugely important that we have your views and suggestions; this is a community project and we want and need to know what you think. Run a cafeteria within the building to create a community hub, a friendly, light, bright, comfortable and safe space for all ages to relax, work, browse, read, all whilst enjoying a warm drink and perhaps a cake, pastry or sandwich

Improve the wifi reception, for those who don’t have, don’t want or can’t afford broadband reception at home

Run a wide variety of events, that, again, will encourage villagers and others through the doors Offer the parish council the opportunity to support the project with cash - not via tax - by renting

office space at a cost that should be recovered from income from its existing house, whilst maintaining ownership of its capital asset at 13 Station Road

Taking the validated accounts provided by the County Council for and adding in an annual 2013-14 inflation figure over 7, 10 and 15 years and with the changes above, we believe the library could be sustainably funded without recourse to asking residents for additional tax monies.

But this very much relies on residents supporting the project and encouraging non-residents to drop in. The questionnaire is designed to ensure we develop the library in ways residents will support and which will attract custom from those outside Ratby. Please complete yours and drop it off by 14th February.

We look forward to receiving your completed questionnaire and we shall publish details of the overall response, hopefully in the next edition of Your Local magazine.

Coffee Morning Raises £380 in aid of CRY On Friday 28th November a coffee morning and Great Cake Bake was held at Ratby Sports Club. This was in aid of CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and £380 was raised. We would like to thank everyone involved who supported us by bringing cakes, donating money or enjoying a coffee and a chat with friends on the day. A special thanks to those who helped us at the event and Steve at the club who suggested that we ‘go global’ and hold it there. We have supported Cry’s Great Cake Bake for the last 3 years and this was the most successful to date. Every week in the UK at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of an undiagnosed heart condition. Our son Greg was one of them. Cry is a national charity saving young lives and supporting those affected by sudden cardiac death. If you are interested in finding out more their web site is www.c-r-y.org.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ratby, Kirby Muxloe & Leicester Forest East areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction

that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Consultation on Leicestershire School Admissions for entry September 2016

Libraries As I reported in last month’s report the County Councils Cabinet has now approved the new tapering packages that are on offer to Community Groups wishing to run their own Local Library. I would urge any interested residents or groups to contact the Parish and share your idea’s and work with the Parish council as I know your Parish Council is actively looking at ways it can help run the Library with the Community. I want residents to know that I am working with both Ratby and Groby Parish Councils. As your County Councillor and that I will do everything I can within my power to protect the library services for residents. The County Council is now listening to the various groups across the county wishing to put their business cases forward, the officer to contact is Nigel Thomas head of Library services at County Hall. Borough Councillors Report Cllr Ozzy O’Shea Tel 0116 2394336 or 07808585825 Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com

Anti Social Behaviour We seem to be suffering from a continual spat of anti social behaviour in the village and we would like residents help to put a swift end to this. We have been made aware that there is a group of youths in the village behind several incidents. What concerns us is that one of the properties being targeted is owned by a vulnerable person. Residents are being woken up at 3am in the morning after having their bedroom windows pelted with eggs this can be very frightening to elderly residents and although such things can be associated with Halloween this is not certainly the case now. Ozzy has been made aware of two repeated attacks at 3am in the morning on both occasions where residents have been woken up in the last two weeks of December. Several properties have been targeted on the Cawrey estate and Egg boxes have been found on Ferndale Park and nearby walk ways. These incidents have all been reported to the police and Ozzy has been checking with local shops trying to identify where the eggs are being purchased from. We would urge all residents who suffer this type of behaviour or minor damage to report it to the police on 101. Remember ABS is not a victimless crime the police need to know what is happening so that they can put resources into the area.

Thefts From Sheds and Gardens We have been made aware of several thefts from sheds within the village during

Cllr Chris Boothby Tel 0116 2388301 or 07880 711 222 Email chris.boothby@hotmail.com

December which included the thefts of pedal cycles and garden equipment. Two Solar lights were stolen from the Ivanhoe trail one at the entrance next to the Railway PH and the other at the entrance to the tarmac path on Taverner Drive these were valued at £600. Ozzy made enquires with the help of local residents the lights were found on top of a den built by youths behind the Band Hut both were damaged beyond repair, various items of garden equipment were also located. The police are now making enquires. We would urge residents to secure their sheds and out buildings. If anyone has any information you can contact either Ozzy or Chris in confidence.

New Tenancy Agreement. A new Tenancy Agreement is being drafted to go out to HBBC Tenants for consultation. Most of the new agreement remains unchanged but Chris has been involved in local public consultation meetings with the support of Ozzy along with Council Officers and the invaluable input from Together for Tenants. Chris ordered the removal of the first draft of this document as it appeared to request that in terms of housing repairs, tenants were required to do such things as internal plastering. Tiling, replacement of internal doors and all windows. The new draft which has yet to go to Council will recommend that such as the above be withdrawn. Tenant’s rent is ring fenced for our housing repair bill and as such the responsibility for major repairs should not fall on tenants.

Green Waste Collection. This issue came before Council on the 16th December 2014. It was the ruling Lib/Dem Authority's plan to charge all household's in the Borough £30 from 2015/16 to collect the brown bin green waste following a reduction following a reduction in the monetary credits awarded by Leicestershire County Council. The Conservative Group at HBBC vehemently argued against this stating that this was a front line service that residents paid for through their Council Tax and furthermore, we left office in 2007 leaving nearly £13 million in reserve funds. Surely there was enough left to accommodate this reduction but apparently not after their wild spending spree for Hinckley Town Centre. The Administration amazingly have now found some extra funding so the decision has been put on hold for the next Administration to deal with after May 2015. Both Ozzy and Chris would like to wish all our residents a Very Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year Once again, we would like to take this opportunity to thank residents for their continued support and remind you we are only a phone call away Regards

Chris & Ozzy. Working for you.

It’s not often I get a phone call regarding a potential story that hooks me instantly, but this is a rare one that did! Deana Wildgoose, the manager for the Sir John Moore Foundation called me up before Christmas to see if I’d be interested in featuring an article showcasing the fantastic foundation and everything they have to offer, I’m sure you’ll agree it would have been a shame to let this article slip past!

Heart to heart; Leicestershire's Hidden Treasure Sir Christopher Wren in the 17th century designed a building in Leicestershire that is still in use today – where is it? Where can you go to school; attend film club; take part in an archaeological dig; perform at a band night and hold your wedding? The answer? Appleby Magna! In the heart of the Leicestershire countryside lies a magnificent building commissioned by Sir John Moore in 1697. Sir John was born in Appleby. He was a passionate supporter of emancipation through education and good health and he was the second son of the squire of Appleby. Sir John made his own way in the world, amassing a fortune by trading lead. He was Lord Mayor of London in 1681, and a Master of the Grocers Company. He was a dedicated philanthropist and his own financial success was shared for the benefit of his fellow citizens. He made substantial investments in his home village to better the heart mind and soul of “the gentlemen of all England”, by building the Sir John Moore School in Appleby and in Christ's Hospital in London; both commissions for his good friend Sir Christopher Wren. Sir John and Lady Moore did not have children and the building in Appleby was put into the care of a family led charitable foundation. Descendants of Sir John and Lady Moore have always served as

Trustees. The beating heart of Sir Johns legacy is as alive today, as it was in 1697. The Trustees now as in 1697 are accountable for ensuring the success of the building as an environment that inspires learning and is maintained in excellent order. In 2004 the Trustees secured £2million in grants and donations to restore the building for the next generation of children. The refurbishment of this Grade 1 listed building ensured all three floors were brought back into use. Stepping through the ironwork gates is a step into the 17th Century. You will find a 21st century Village School. 140 pupils are taking their first steps into an education that parents, the village and Ofsted love. The ground floor is dedicated to the village primary school, as well as the larger rooms on the second floor and the majority of the grounds, providing outdoor space to play and compete. In order to enable every child to realise their potential and take up citizenship the Trustees must to continue to look after the building. A museum showcasing Victorian education is on the top floor and two elegant flats for rent, one with a rooftop garden. The original stables are converted to create a vibrant space that houses the foundation office; the hub of the charity’s operations. Adjacent to the stables is a bijou Coffee Shop with stately outside

seating. In the cellars is a licenced bar and recording studio for hire. One three-story wing is let as office space for local businesses with their own separate access. Both the regular upkeep and planned maintenance works require investment. The small team of Foundation staff generate the income that helps to sustain this inspirational and aspirational place. A big part of this is sharing the space with families to hold significant events, parties, weddings and celebrations. Holding a wedding or a party at Sir John Moore is affordable and grand. This unique venue delivers bespoke packages at completive rates. The enjoyment of guests who fall in love with this place makes a huge contribution to maintaining the building and site. 2014 marked ten years of success from our 2004 restoration. One thing is for sure, if Sir John Moore were here today he would be pretty proud that his legacy continues today, as innovative as it was over 300 years ago, to support and inspire all of us. We need at least £20,000 a year simply to maintain the fabric of this historic building. If you are inspired by our story, you can help by sharing your celebration with us in this unique venue: simply contact the office on 01530 273629 or email deana.sirjohnmoore@gmail.com

After reading the article I have done some research of my own and discovered that there is much more the Foundation offers Leicestershire. This is merely a taster and it’s certainly wet my appetite! If you want to find out more about this amazing place go to www.sirjohnmoore.org.uk. We hope to bring you more on 21st century education at Sir John Moore and 21st century inspiration from internationally celebrated educationalists who are as inspired as I am by what's happening here

The New Way of Receiving Your Prescription Has Arrived..... SO DON’T DELAY, NOMINATE RATBY PHARMACY TODAY! Prescriptions in England are going paperless! This means instead of your GP giving you a paper prescription, they will send it electronically to your nominated pharmacy. This service is called Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) and Ratby Chemist is taking nominations from any surgery or patient. The prescription will be sent by the GP to Ratby Chemist where we can get your medications ready straight away. This service may be particularly beneficial if you receive regular prescriptions as you don’t have to collect your prescription from the surgery between check-ups. It will be equally beneficial to those having one off prescriptions, as once we receive your prescription, we can dispense it quickly, saving you time. Many of the local surgeries have already gone ‘live’ and we are receiving prescriptions electronically. Regardless of whether your surgery is offering this service or not, you can still nominate us in advance. Then you will be ready to use the service once it is available at your GP surgery. Simply visit us at 10 Main Street, Ratby to sign a consent form and you are ready to go. This service can be used for Repeat prescriptions and one-off prescriptions. However it cannot be used for private, veterinary prescriptions or controlled drug prescriptions.

Is your nest still full? A qua rter of British people over the age of 50 still have adult children living at home – almost half of them without making any contribution to household bills. In fact, many parents are spending just over £3,700 a year to feed and house their over-18 offspring, who have been stranded at the parental home by crippling house prices and university debts. Other parents are helping out by lending money to children who have moved out. The problem with young people who cannot afford to fly the nest is now so widespread that financial experts are warning that members of the baby boomer generation could be jeopardising their retirement prospects with their generosity to their grown-up children. But as a spokesperson for MetLife UK, who commissioned the research, says, “helping out family is a powerful motivation for parents…”

Please call Ratby Pharmacy on 0116 2393139 for further details.

Have your say on Council spending and services Residents in Blaby District have got the chance to have their say on Council Tax and how the Council delivers its services in the future. Over the coming years funding Blaby District Council receives from central government to pay for local services will be substantially reduced and the Council is keen to find a way to minimise the impact this may have. Blaby District Council receives only 9 percent of the total Council Tax it collects from each household, which in total means it receives just over £4m of the £46m it collects in the district. The rest is distributed to the County Council, Police, Fire and local parish councils. Councillor Terry Richardson, portfolio holder

for Finance, Efficiency and Assets, said: “Blaby District Council continues to deliver some of the lowest cost services in the country whilst maintaining high levels of service and customer satisfaction. “In 2015/16 we are expecting to spend £9.3m on our services, but we now know that our core government funding will be reduced by £600,000. We’re committed to meeting the financial shortfall in a way to minimise the impact on our residents and would like to take the opportunity to ask some questions and get feedback from the district.” All residents are able to take part in the consultation, however 600 people chosen at random across the district will be phoned

about the survey, which is being carried out on the Council’s behalf by CR Research. It is completely optional and there is no requirement for residents to answer any or certain parts of the survey. All responses will be treated confidently. For anyone wishing to fill out the survey online please visit the Consultations and Public Notices page on the Council’s website www.blaby.gov.uk Hard copies of the survey can be obtained on request, please email corporate.performance@blaby.gov.uk or call 0116 275 0555. The closing date is Thursday 29 January 2014.

Get Involved with Environmental What are Garage Sales? Volunteering Projects ‘Garage Sales’ are events arranged within a community for the sale of used goods by private individuals, rather like a car boot sale at your own home. Sellers are not required to obtain business licenses and publicity for the event is arranged by the organiser. Typically the goods in a garage sale are unwanted items from the home. The goods are sometimes new, like-new, or just usable, these might include old clothing, books, toys, tools, sports equipment or furniture. Some of these items are offered for sale because the owner does not want or need the item to minimize their possessions or to raise funds. The seller displays their wares to the passers-by on their driveway, in their garage or even in a car boot if it is safe to do so (naturally, we do not encourage sellers to invite prospective buyers in to their homes). It is up to the seller to agree the sale price. If this sounds like a good way to have a spring clean and raise a little cash - and you live in Ratby - why not put Bank Holiday Monday 4th May 2015 in your diary? More details of how the event is going to run will be published nearer the time. This event is being organised by the Eco-Team at St Philip & St James Church, Ratby, the aim of the day is to reduce the amount of useable items going to landfill, to give good quality goods a new home thus helping to preserve the wonderful World we live in.

Turn over a new leaf this New Year and get involved with environmental volunteering projects in Leicestershire: waste action volunteering, the master gardeners’ scheme and conservation volunteering. In Leicestershire, every two weeks we throw away enough waste to fill the Royal Albert Hall. Becoming a waste action volunteer for Leicestershire County Council, gives you the chance to help stop this by providing your local community with advice on reducing their waste. Karen Webb, a waste action volunteer, said: “Once we’re trained, we can focus on areas we’re interested in. I’ve enjoyed advising people how to use their leftovers, teaching scouts how to compost and use recycled materials as well as attending events. I’m a valued part of my community through my waste action volunteering and have made lots of friends, including master gardeners.”

To find out more or apply, visit www.lesswaste.org.uk/waste_action_volunteers Leicestershire master gardeners help people learn to grow their own food. They support individual households and community projects across Leicestershire and as a volunteer; you will be providing support and guidance to individuals and communities in developing their own food growing projects. Two-day induction courses to become a master gardener volunteer start on Thursday 22/ Friday 23 January and Saturday 28 February/Sunday 1 March 2015. For more information, contact Alison McGrath on 07584 343847 or amcgrath@gardenorganic.org.uk www.leicestershire.mastergardeners.org.uk Alternatively, conservation volunteering involves joining a diverse group of people to carry out conservation tasks on Leicestershire’s country parks. NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION – WHY NOT HELP TO CARE FOR A YOUNG CARER? Did you know that there are estimated to be 700,000 carers under the age of 18 in the UK? Some of these young people live in your area and the Barnardo’s CareFree Young Carers’ Services is asking if you can help support these young people to have some time away from their care roles. In partnership with Leicestershire County Council and Health commissioners, Barnardo’s provides a range of support services for children and young people in Leicestershire who provide care for a family member at home. The family member is often a parent but can also be a sibling or grandparent. They need care due to having a disability, a chronic health condition or a mental health problem. Young carers often feel they miss out on their childhood because of their very adult responsibilities. The CareFree service offers a range of support for the whole family as well as running and supporting groups for young carers. The groups help young carers have regular time out from their care responsibilities and give them the opportunity to socialise with other children who understand their situation. In order to get to these groups, most young carers need help with transport which is why Barnardo’s is asking if you would be willing and able to offer your time to help. To become a Barnardo’s volunteer you will need to be able to offer about 3 to 4 hours of your time on a weekday evening either once a week or once a fortnight during term time. You will also need to be able to transport children or young people in your own vehicle as well as support young carers once they get to their group activities. In return you will be offered full training and reimbursement for your expenses. The next volunteer training session runs in Enderby on Saturday 31 Jan and 7 Feb. For more information and an application form, please call 0116 2867182 and ask to speak to Helena Mitchell, team Leader or email helena.mitchell@barnardos.org.uk

Ratby Primary School News....

Decorations Day

ages spent a whole day creating and putting together their own Christmas decorations!

Throughout the day, the children moved from classroom to classroom making different decorations in each. Parents and carers were invited to come in and help out with the making of the decorations and many came along to give their support to their own children and others as well which was lovely to see! Some of the decorations made included, clay snowmen, sparkly baubles, bouncy Christmas trees and even snowmen made out of socks (newly bought of course!). In each classroom, the children were encouraged to be creative and add their own ideas and details to their designs which meant that all of the decorations were unique! Some of the decorations were used to decorate classrooms and others were sent home so that the children could put up their creative designs and bring the Christmas spirit into their own homes in time for the start of December! All in all, the day was a great success and it got everybody in the Christmas spirit (or at least covered in paint, glue and glitter)!

SLEEPING BEAUTY Courtesy of the school’s PSA, the children of Ratby Primary School recently attended a panto at Loughborough Town Hall. All of the children, from each class in the school, were lucky enough to see Princess Rose and Prince Vince get more than they bargained for in their quest to live happily ever after as the wicked fairy Carabosse cast an evil spell and set out to spoil their happiness. The children had a wonderful time, with one Year Six child commenting, “I didn’t think I was going to like it, but it was really good – the glowing spider battle was cool!” The younger children were just as enthusiastic, “Nancy was really funny, I liked her dresses!” said one Foundation child of the panto Dame. A fantastic time was had by all, with all the children and teachers joining in the songs.

Christmas Nativity “Children of the World” In December, Key Stage 1 children from Ratby Primary school took part in the Christmas Nativity “Children of the World”, looking at how children from around the world celebrate Christmas. We also learnt about Christmas around the world in class. Children really enjoyed learning about different cultural traditions and how to say Happy Christmas in different languages. Dressed in traditional dress from around the world and armed with props, from paper lanterns to sunhats, children couldn’t wait to take to the stage. Parents were treated to a top class performance as children from China, Malawi, Poland, Ireland, USA and Australia shared how they celebrate Christmas and brought gifts to the manger. The children worked incredibly hard to pull off such a fantastic show, learning all their lines and a variety of different songs, which children performed with gusto and enthusiasm. We would like to thank all those for their kind donations; we raised £94.09 for Oxfam unwrapped.

On Wednesday 5th December, 2014 to have the whole of Year 5 were very fortunate a company come into school, known as ‘Portals to the Past,’ to learn even more about the amazing Ancient Greeks – which has been our topic for this part of the Autumn term. It was a superb day, full of exciting and interesting facts and this is what some of the pupils from Venus class had to say about it!

Awesome Ancient Greek Activity Day!

It was a freezing cold morning and we were curious with what the day would bring. Lots of us made our way to school, buzzing with excitement because it was the Greek activity day at Ratby Primary on their way because we had to dress up as an Ancient School. Many were chuckling Greek and come to school dressed like one (the outfits were amazing from everyone! They were all so unique and well thought through!) First, both Year 5 classes met in the hall to see a rather strange fellow dressed in what looked like a tunic? This was Alex; our visitor and eager Greek expert for the day and he started off with giving us lots of background information on Greece that was so fascinating. This included the many adventures of Alexander the Great, who despite being a great leader and conquering many countries, was killed by one tiny mosquito! Many of us were in wonder at all of the things he was explaining to us…what a brilliant start to the day! Next, we had a mind-boggling quiz to complete where we had to search for the answers in groups, which was completed just in time! We now know even more facts, like a Greek person who lived in a barrel!

After break, we re-told the myth of the Minotaur, where we managed to practice our acting skills. This version of our own made us giggle a lot! We were then split back into our two classes to have a go at some Ancient Greek activities. One of these was to put together a range of different sized cut out pieces of wood to make a jigsaw and the other was to try a game of Petteia, which lots of us became very competitive at…even Miss Stretton and Mrs. Oliver! For the last part of our day in the afternoon, we were in training to be super, heroic Greek warriors. First was a lesson in the protective armour they wore, followed by several marching orders and formations we got into, pretending we were they very best Greek army of all! Once we had got the hang of that, we played a game called ‘knocking down the wall of Troy,’ before the final part of the day…a ‘battle to the end’ between Achilles Jake (Venus) and Nathan (Mercury). Can you all remember who won? An awesome day and thank you to all of you for enthusiastically taking part! Written by Eleanor-Rose, Kiah and Elliot (Year 5, Venus class).

Kirby Muxloe Local History Group The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group meets around 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which generally take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30pm. Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe library as well as on the Group’s web site: www.leicestershirevillages.com/kmlhg On the 20th November, we held an entertainment evening with a wartime theme. To commemorate the outbreak of WW1, we organised a mixture of sing-alongs and more serious, but interesting, items. Our favourite entertainer, Karen West, sang all the old war-time songs that we know so well, with everyone joining in, including some “Last Night of the Proms” favourites.

Businesses in Blaby District are invited to attend a free breakfast meeting in January to share ideas for boosting the local economy and hear about the latest funding opportunities and business news from Blaby District Council and partner organisations. Blaby District Council is hosting the “Blaby District Means Business” event for local companies on Thursday 22 January at the Hilton Hotel, junction 21 approach, Leicester. This first event for 2015 is one of a series of networking events the council is running to benefit local firms.

We also had a moving reading from some “Letters from the Front” from a soldier to the wife he left behind. They were relatives of one of our members, who was also able to provide pictures of the couple. Another member had loaned us the WW1 diary of his father, which enabled us to give a presentation on his travels around France around the time of the armistice. This gave an interesting insight into the life of one man’s war. To ensure that, as a historical society, we presented a realistic view of WW1, including the horrors of life in the trenches, there was a reading of the famous anti-war poem “Dulce et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen. This was accompanied by film excerpts and a haunting soundtrack. It was an honest and “no punches pulled” view of the war. Table competed against table in a WW1 quiz. Two tables tied for the prize, which had to be split between them when the tie-breaker question failed to split the tie! We decided not to be overly “war realistic” with the party food that we provided! Quiche and trifle were very much enjoyed, as was the “Trench Cake” that had been cooked to a real wartime recipe. Overall, the evening was thoroughly enjoyed and provided entertainment whilst commemorating an important period in our nation’s history. Professor Richard Buckley will be presenting 'Richard III: The King Under The Car Park' to the History Group on Thursday 15th January 2015. Whilst entrance charges to the meeting will be as normal, it will be necessary to purchase these tickets in advance. Please speak to any member of the KMLHG committee that you know, or call 239 2818, if you require more information about how to get tickets (subject to availability). Safety regulations as to numbers of people attending will mean that numbers will have to be limited and only those with tickets will be able to listen to the presentation. The Group are always looking for photographs of people who have lived/worked in the village and events that have taken place in Kirby Muxloe.

FILMREVIEW Taken 3:

Just as things are getting back on track with his wife, Lenore, Bryan Mills returns home one day to find her murdered body in his bed. The police believe he is the culprit, and Bryan makes a speedy getaway to buy himself time to find the real murderer.

Kirby Muxloe Recreation Ground Charity Number 521441 (The Charity) gives notice that it proposes to grant a lease for 125 years to the Kirby Muxloe Primary School Academy Trust (Registered Charity Number: 08702056) for use for the educational purposes of the said Academy Trust.

As Bryan is pursued by Frank Dotzler, an investigator with the police, he must use his time wisely to hone in on the culprit. With time against him, Bryan’s trademark vigilante justice needs to be precise, quick, and above all, right. Will he manage to catch the murderer before the police catch him? As the third and final instalment in the hugely successful Taken series, Taken 3 shows Liam Neeson at his absolute best. This action thriller will have you at the edge of your seat as Bryan fights against the clock to prove his innocence to the police and find out who really killed his wife.

Birdman Twenty years after turning down his iconic superhero role in “Birdman 4, Riggan is now on the scrapheap as far as Hollywood is concerned – just another washed up A-lister whose star has faded out. Desperate to be taken seriously, he puts together a Broadway play which sees him take the starring role, but must battle his ego and demons along the way.

Any representations or comments in relation to the proposed transaction should be sent for consideration to the following address, by no later than one calendar month from the date of publication of this Notice (deadline 12th February 2015), quoting reference TP/MKD/Kirby Muxloe Recreation Ground Charity. Bullying

Birdman has already been met with universal acclaim from critics at the Venice, Telluride and New York film festivals, who have praised Keaton’s performance and the film’s fresh narrative and bold script.

The area of land proposed to be subject to the lease for 125 years and to be granted at a peppercorn rent is shown on the plan attached to this Notice, and which plan can be viewed on the Charity Trustee’s webpage at http://www.kirbymuxloeparishcouncil.org.uk.

Michael Keaton (Batman, Jackie Brown) puts in a show stopping performance as Riggan, in this dark comedy which satirises the US film industry. Keaton is backed up by a strong supporting cast, some of whom are no strangers themselves to the superhero genre.

A recent study has found that nearly 12 per cent of young people said that they had been ‘cyberbullied’ as opposed to nine per cent who said they had been bullied face to face. The findings mark a shift since the previous study, held in 2010. That found that 16 percent of children reported bullying face to face, and eight percent online. Researchers at EU Kids Online research programme at LSE university, believe that the rise of smartphones could be to blame. Children are now online constantly, And it is really hard to escape. That is the new phenomenon. Kids are on their Facebook 24/7.

Queen tops combined Christmas Day viewing figures The Queen's broadcast, simulcast on BBC One and ITV, topped the Christmas Day ratings, with overnight figures showing an average of 7.82 million viewers. Mrs Brown's Boys on BBC One, averaging 7.61 million, had the single biggest audience for the second year running. However, overall figures for live TV viewing were sharply down on last year. BBC One had seven of the top 10 most watched programmes while ITV had four - the channels shared the Queen's Christmas Broadcast at 15:00 GMT. Irish-based sitcom Mrs Brown's Boys topped the ratings last year. But it dropped from the 9.4 million viewers it attracted then, while second-placed EastEnders also dipped, to 7.55 million. That allowed the traditional 10-minute message from the Queen to move to the top spot when figures for both BBC and ITV were combined.

Popular Programme For Loughborough Orchestra

Volunteers needed for dementia befriending service in Leicester

The Loughborough Orchestra January concert is packed full of sumptuous music! As a starter, comes the stirring Finlandia, which was composed by Sibelius and recognised by his fellow countrymen to express the very heart of Finland. Soon after the piece was composed, the title was changed several times to avoid Russian censorship against repeated performances!

Alzheimer's Society is looking for new volunteers in Leicester to give a few hours each week to meet up with someone with dementia who has similar interests.

The next tasty treat is a performance of Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto no. 1 by East Midlands violinist, Yulia Nortridzh. This concerto contains one of the best known and most lyrical slow movements in the violin repertoire, while the outer movements display the soloist’s sparkling virtuosity Yulia grew up, trained and performed in Russia before moving to Derby and her playing will not disappoint!

Suna Tilley, Befriending Manager for Alzheimer’s Society in Leicestershire and Rutland said:

For the second half of the programme, the orchestra will play the ever popular New World Symphony by Anton Dvořák. This is full of hauntingly beautiful themes and dramatic energy, which reflect the music of Native American Indians and African American spirituals. Whatever the inspiration, the music has become one of the most popular of all time and used in films, advertisements, TV and many other promotional uses.

is on Saturday in Trinity Methodist Church Centre, The concert January 24th at 7.30 pm Royland Rd. Loughborough. Tickets are available from members of the orchestra or on the door. For more information, see http://www.loughboroughorchestra.org.uk/

The Mayor of Charnwood, Councillor, Paul Day is holding

“Everyone needs a friend, yet 85 per cent of people with dementia struggle with isolation, loneliness and depression. Alzheimer’s Society’s volunteer Befrienders enable people to do things they love from shopping to visiting the gardening centre. Sometimes it just means stopping by for a cup of tea. Befriending offers the perfect opportunity for volunteers to support people with dementia to continue to feel a part of their community. They provide companionship and are matched with people depending on their personality and common interests.” New volunteers are given training and support before starting their roles.
