Unique Health for Teens website launched

A ground-breaking new website ‘Health for Teens’ has been launched by school nurses from Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT), coproduced by over 80 young people from Leicestershire’s secondary schools.

The unique website is the first NHS website that has been created especially to support teens with their mental and physical health and wellbeing. It features interactive content, films, and quizzes - written by experts from across LPT services including school nursing, health improvement, smoking cessation, dietetics, and mental health. The website’s comprehensive content includes topics as wide ranging as exam stress to anger management, and from spots to alcohol. Visit www.healthforteens.co.uk. Health for Teens complements, and features, a web chat facility linking to our multi-award winning school nurse messaging system ChatHealth - enabling young people to receive advice and support directly from a health professional. Margaret Clarke, Lead School Nurse for LPT, said: “Health for Teens introduces a new and different way for young people aged 11 -16 to learn about their health. All the content has been written in consultation with young people, to provide engaging yet informative bite-sized content on topics that matter to them. Thank you to all the young people and schools involved, we couldn’t have produced something this fantastic without them and we hope that they will continue to inform us in keeping it fresh and up to date with the information they want to know about their health and wellbeing. The website is primarily a health promotion website, covering subjects that promote a healthy body and mind. It is not about managing serious illnesses for which more specialist websites already exist but we’ve signposted you to them where that’s applicable. Your school nursing service is always there to support you to stay happy and healthy – find out more about how to contact them by visiting www.healthforteens.co.uk “ The website has been partfunded by Leicestershire County Council, to support the hosting of a secure Year 7 questionnaire (launching in June) to help us gather the thoughts and views of young people and their health so that school nurses can best support them in their transition to secondary school.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ratby, Kirby Muxloe & Leicester Forest East areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction

that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

29th April – 2nd May 2015 at 7.30pm Kirby Muxloe Village Hall, Station Road. This play had a very successful run in the West End and is a delightfully warm and very funny play about the lives, laughs and loves of a group of women (and one man) attending a weekly tap-dancing class. Each of the eight students has his or her own reason for coming every week to the dingy church hall ‌ to chat, relax and, if they can manage it ‌ to learn a couple of dance steps – all with the help of their eternally patient instructor and accompanied by the acerbic pianist. But the steps and the routines are just the background for what is the real focus of the play the relationships and interactions of these ten very different people. Come along and enjoy an evening as a ‘fly on the wall’ of the church hall and see for yourself why this play was voted ‘Comedy of the Year’ by The Evening Standard Drama Awards. The booking line is now open 07804 435 235 or contact us at www.kirbyplayers.co.uk

Don’t forget to mention Your Local when responding to adverts

There is no charge to take part in this event; we warmly welcome people from within the village to set up stalls and people from surrounding villages to visit the event. The Church’s Eco-Team who are organising proceedings simply want people in the village to avoid putting things in to landfill by finding new homes for their unwanted goods.

NEWS FROM RATBY PARISH COUNCIL... Bloor’s Appeal The Council is sure you will be pleased to know that the Appeal against development on the green wedge site, East of Markfield Road (opposite Groby College) has been dismissed for the 3rd time! Ratby Parish Council, together with Groby Parish Council, the Borough Councillors for each Parish and the very able assistance of Mr Simon Stanion of Shakespeares, triumphed again. The Council is also grateful for the support residents gave to this too!

Ratby Library By now you will all know that Ratby Library Group succeeded in registering its interest to run the Library. What you may not know is that the Parish Council had also expressed an interest. Its option was to purchase the building and retain the services of the existing librarian to run the library, the Parish Council undertaking to pay the cost of wages etc. The Parish Council has always been anxious to maintain the library facility and in purchasing the building would have maintained this and created a valuable asset for the village.

Grass Verges From April 2015 the Parish Council will be undertaking the cutting of the grass verges previously done by the County Council. The work will be carried out by the Parish Council’s existing contractor and will be done to the same standard as the other areas in the village.

Flower boxes The Parish Council would also like to thank all those people who plant the boxes in the

village. Ratby Primary School pupils have undertaken the responsibility for planting the boxes at the Desford Lane Corner. The wooden flower boxes are being replaced by recycled plastic ones and the one on the corner of Markfield Road will be replaced after spring flowering.

Parking on Grass Verges – Damage to surfacing (Ferndale Park) The Council is aware that parking is difficult in the village but please try to avoid parking on the grass verges. It makes such a mess and very often the grass does not have a chance to recover. The safety surfacing is again being vandalised and will have to be resurfaced. If anyone witnesses the surfaces being damaged please report it to the Police on 101 or alternatively contact the Parish Council Office (0116 239 0167)

Vandalism Unfortunately, vandalism is still occurring on Ferndale Park – the latest thing to happen is that the safety surfacing is being systematically dug up! Residents have a fantastic facility at the park and it is a pity that vandals do their utmost to destroy it. If you witness anyone damaging equipment, surfacing, etc., please either contact the Police on 101 or contact the parish office on 0116 239 0167 or email: ratbypcouncil@btconnect.com.

Annual Parish Meeting The Annual Parish Meeting will take place on Wednesday, 22nd April 2015 at 8pm at Ratby Methodist Church, Chapel Lane, Ratby and all residents are welcome to attend.

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group meets generally 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which generally take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30 pm. Details of the dates of future meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe library as well as on the Group’s web site: www.leicestershirevillages.com/kmlhg. Summaries of past meetings are also shown on the web site. On March 19th members and visitors listened to a talk about ‘Leicestershire Ghosts and Legends’, given by David Bell. This talk was followed by a short video, which had been produced by Sarah Livsey-Barnes, showing interviews of some residents of the village. The next meeting of the Group, the first of the 2015 – 2016 year, will be on Thursday 21st May, when Stuart Warburton will be giving a talk ‘The Story of James Town’ - the beginning of English Speaking America. This talk will be followed by the short Annual General Meeting of the Group. The Group are always looking for photographs of people who have lived/worked in the village and events that have taken place in Kirby Muxloe.

Where 8,000 members, of which 198 are from Leicestershire and Rutland will attend to celebrate the 100 year anniversary on June 2nd, members were encouraged to put their names forward for the ballot for the spare seats. The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Leicester Councillor John Thomas gave a civic welcome, he said that he had one year in service as a Civic Mayor unlike the elected Mayor who serves 4 years, he said that he had come into the post at a most poignant time with the interment of Richard 111 which will be a national televised event. Minutes of last year’s meeting were read and approved as were the adoption of the council meeting standing orders and the adoption of the annual report for 2014. And the appointment of auditors and tellers for 2015 and I duly shook my pink voting paper. We were introduced to Valerie Stevens from Associated Country Women of the World; she is an ambassador who travels with her husband all over the world at her own expense. Valerie was extremely passionate and very enthusiastic about her role, saying that there were three things needed an “International Voice, a Helping Hand and the Arm of Friendship. She attends conferences all around the world and talked of the work that ACWW , Valerie told us how she is humbled by the people that she meets, the places that she visits, and urged us to keep giving as we are making a difference, she was a truly inspirational woman.

hard for a woman with a family to complete the course”, that wouldn’t happen today! Undeterred she did the HND course instead and on passing that she went on to University, gaining her degree at the age of 40. This helped with her confidence and she now writes professionally one woman shows, her first piece was called ‘Gusset’ following her anecdotes of her 20 years in the pants factory. She wrote ‘The diaries of Marjorie Simpson’ after finding her mother in laws diaries in a loft after she passed away; Elaine recent stories ‘Apple Pie Order” about raising awareness of domestic violence with some parts funny and some very hard hitting , she tours schools with these plays. Elaine was a very entertaining, naughty and witty woman who was a joy to listen to and made us all laugh. Our afternoon started with ‘The Inspirations a choir from Sheepy Magna WI who are through to the finals this coming week with 5 other WI’s from around the country, they sang ‘I Will Survive’ and ‘The Rhythm of Life’. We were then introduced to our main speaker Angela Rippon OBE. She told us how she set out in her working life on September 5th 1966 at BBC Plymouth, she was paid £6 10 shillings for her first job. Angela had wanted to be a photo journalist and studied 2 years photography and 3 years at a newspaper, learning newspaper practice, how everything in a newspaper runs, she learnt about Politics and Law. Angela said she believed that you needed three things to be a good reporter, Honesty, Accuracy and Integrity. She went to work for ITV Westwood and was editor and director there for 4 years, she joined the BBC as a 9’oclock news reporter, she said amongst many things she did she met Cassius Clay before he was Mohammed Ali and rode Red Rum who at that time was a 2 x winner of the Grand National.

She was asked to stand in for Richard Baker, that was how she got her break into news reading and was the first national woman news reader and the rest she said is history. To make a good news reader you need credibility, authority, to be able to read out loud and to Sight Read names properly. She was the first presenter of Top Gear, which she urged us to remember as this often comes up in quizzes. She was the second presenter of The Antiques Roadshow, she went on to mention the “Ding Mynasty” – Angela even you can get it wrong occasionally. In the 1980’s she started Breakfast TV with David Frost, Michael Parkinson and Robert Key this was TVAM but this had meant that she had left the BBC and in those days if you went to the other side you did not go back, so she went to work in Boston USA for a year there she said she learnt to recognise her strengths and weakness’. When she returned home to England she was out of work for 6 weeks and was then invited to be the 16th presenter of ‘Come Dancing’ this followed with ‘Crufts’ The holiday program, Sun sea and bargain spotting. She has covered four royal weddings (Anne, Charles, Charles again and Katherine) and one funeral, Diana’s. Angela supports two charities close to her heart, the Alzheimer’s society and Dementia friends and she would urge all WI members to be dementia friends. A very interesting woman who has done many things in her life and does not want to give up just yet and yes she did enjoy being with Morecambe and Wise although that was 30 years ago, she is always asked about this, A vote of thanks was given to Angela and we were sung to again by The Inspirations they sang My Life by the Beatles and Singing for Joy, they were absolutely brilliant and we wished them good luck for the forthcoming competition. We sang the National Anthem and our day was finished. It was a great day and I urge anyone who hasn’t yet been to an ACM meeting to go, you will not be disappointed.

A presentation of the coins for friendship given by Leicestershire and Rutland WI’s amounted to £4820.41p this was given to Valerie. Our morning speaker was Elaine Pantling, LaurieLorry Theatre Company. Elaine took us through stories from her childhood to the present day. She left school with very little qualifications and worked in a factory as a cutter for some 20 years. Elaine had always had a yearn to work in the Theatre and when she saw an advert for an access course for Theatre and Performing Arts Course she applied, Elaine really wanted to go to university, went for an interview at a University but did not get in being told that it” would be

Bali Rai Visits Groby Community College IN FEBRUARY Groby Community College welcomed the Leicester based author Bali Rai to the college to speak to 60 students from all years about creative writing and reading. The sessions were, in the words of one Year 10 student, “inspirational”. Bali’s irrepressible enthusiasm and humour and his laid back style struck a chord with our students. As a Leicester based author, much of Bali’s inspiration comes from the city and county he lives in, and it was this local connection that our students seemed to enjoy the most. Of course, our A Level Creative Writing students also enjoyed the opportunity to get feedback from a working author! It was a great experience for all of the students and we hope to play host to more visiting authors in the future. www.grobycoll.com

Ratby Primary School

Ratby Primary School Bake Off On Friday 23rd January, the year 3 pupils at Ratby Primary School had their very own bake off! Each child was given the opportunity to plan their own cake design prior to the day. Their designs were very imaginative and impressive! On the day of the ‘bake off’, the children were given a selection of different coloured icing and a range of sweets and chocolates to create their masterpieces on ready-made fairy cakes. The results were fantastic! The designs included a skull and crossbones, a bright green frog, rainbows and glitter, a selection of insects, a colourful peacock and several minions!

Brookvale science trip! We had a great time on the 19th of March! Once we got to Brookvale we were given a scientific word search whilst we waited for the other school. After a short while the other school arrived and then we began. We were split up into two groups because there were two activities. The first activity was seeing what food had the most energy: Pasta - Shreddies - Biscuits

To test our experiment we had 10 ml of water at room temperature (18 degrees) and heated the food with a bunsen burner. With the flame on the food we heated the water. The biscuits gave the most energy as it made the water boil (100 degrees)! Many people predicted the pasta would give the most energy, what did you think?

After that we did exercises (the second activity) and we were curious to see which one increased our heart beats per minute the most. First, we checked our heartbeat before the exercise and then once we did the exercise, we checked it again. We filled a table in, that had three rows, bpm (beats per minute) before and after the exercise, the final row was the difference between them both. Jumping increased our heart beat the most and we tested them with a digital timer and an electronic heart beat device that we put on our index finger. It showed the bpm (after a few tries)! It was a fun ha School andd enjoyable morning, thanks Primary Brookvale!

Comic Relief

Friday the 13th, a day often regarded by many as unlucky. Well for the pupils of Ratby Primary School the 13th of March 2015 may have been very worrying! As they arrived at school dressed in red and bright colours they began to get a glimpse of what was to come‌. Teachers were nowhere to be seen and in their place were Evel Knieval, Anni-Frid (of ABBA), Madonna, Cindy Lauper and many more 80’s throwbacks! Of course it was all in aid of charity, the 13th of March saw many  Â? Â?Â? Â? across the country ‘Doing something funny for   €  Â‚ money’ to raise cash for Comic Relief.

Ratby Primary School’s Sporting Success Continues Following the unprecedented sporting success of Ratby Primary School in recent cricket, football and TAG rugby competitions, the Under 9 Football team continued to enhance the school’s reputation when winning a district F.A. competition at Fairfield Preparatory School. In a seven-a-side competition, with a great standard of football being played by all teams present, Ratby demonstrated an excellent combination of skill, determination and teamwork to emerge victorious, conceding only a single goal throughout the competition, scoring 11 in the process. The hosting school, who have won the same

There are two rubbish bins located within the skate park area and we would urge users to put your rubbish in them. The amount of rubbish and broken glass left on the floor could well be classed as anti social behaviour it could also cause injury to users, small children or dogs.

Walk your support for Canine Partners at the Big Martinshaw Woods Bluebell Walk Meet at: Martinshaw Woods, Markfield Road, Ratby, Leics, LE6 0LS on April 26th at 11am If you love strolling through spring flowers and would like to raise money for assistance dog charity Canine Partners, then the Big Martinshaw Woods Bluebell Walk in Ratby on Sunday 26 April at 11am is for you. Kathleen Hodkinson, organiser of the three mile walk and a volunteer puppy parent for the Charity, said: “I see first-hand the valuable assistance the canine partners give to people with various disabilities, and I am impressed with the skills the dogs learn through the training process. “Organising a walk seemed a fun way of raising much needed funds for Canine Partners! “At the Big Martinshaw Woods Bluebell Walk there will be an opportunity to stroll through The Woodlands Trust site, take part in a raffle, a quiz and buy some goodies from our merchandise stand on the day.” Canine Partners provides specially trained assistance dogs to help people with disabilities such as opening and closing doors, undressing, pressing buttons, retrieving items, unloading washing machines, taking card and cash from ATMs and other everyday tasks that disabled people find difficult, painful or impossible to do for themselves. Canine Partners CEO Andy Cook, added: “The Big Bluebell Walk is a family fun event and we would like as many people as possible to join us on our spring scenic walk - and you are more than welcome to bring your dog along too. “We do not receive any government funding and rely solely on donations so the money you raise will help create more canine partnerships, transforming the lives of disabled people. “This year is a particularly special one for us at Canine Partners as we are celebrating our 25th anniversary, so come along and walk your support for the Charity.” The fundraising event is part of the Charity’s national Big Bluebell Dog Walk Campaign, which has raised more than £150,000 in the past 11 years. All funds raised from this walk will help the Charity to train more assistance dogs and transform the lives of people with disabilities, including wounded servicemen and women in conjunction with Help for Heroes. Winner of Outstanding Teacher in LFE Film Evenings Design and Technology Award The Trustees of the Design and Technology Association presented Sally Beeston, Head of ADT at Groby Community College with an award for ‘Outstanding Teacher Design and Technology’ on Friday 20 March 2015. The Design and Technology Association’s Annual Excellence Awards Ceremony took place at The Crystal, Royal Victoria Dock, London. Sally, along with colleagues from across the country were invited to the prestigious ceremony to receive her award. Sally was nominated for, and subsequently won the award for, her commitment and approach to teaching textiles, which was deemed by the association as exemplary. This excellence is demonstrated in her classroom where inspirational displays reflect the work her students produce and are a celebration of her subject. Her students consistently produce work that is creative and of a high quality and she encourages innovative thinking and the exploration of new ideas, such as the use of e-textiles. Sally’s role as Head of ADT at Groby Community College, means she is constantly busy, but never too busy to support colleagues or get involved in new initiatives. This has included her piloting new resources being developed for the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and exhibiting at the Textiles Teacher event, which runs annually to showcase best practices in textiles for teachers across the country. Her attention to detail when preparing work for this event, along with the quality of work she showcases, is a true inspiration to other teachers. The work of the students at Groby, because of Sally’s expertise and passion for her subject, represent what excellence in textiles technology is about.

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com • Need to hand over your pin numbers and bank cards to a courier/official sent to collect them. • Need to hand over money to A courier/ official sent to collect them.

Ivanhoe Trail I am pleased to inform residents that Severn Trent and the Highways authority have now completed their ground works on the Ivanhoe Trail. Leicestershire County Council will start work on Monday 20th April to complete the path between Taverner Drive and the M1 Bridge completing the link between Ratby and Glenfield.

Grass Cutting. I have been working with both the County Council and the Parish Council since I was elected on the grass cutting problems within the village. I am pleased to inform residents that Ratby Parish Council has now taken on the Contract from Leicestershire County Council to cut the Grass and I hope you agree the grass is starting to look a lot tidier. I would again urge drivers not to park on the grass verges and green open spaces as this not only damages the grass but also prevents the grounds men from cutting the grass.

Fraudsters are targeting people by “cold calling” them on the telephone. The scam starts with the following simple activity:

• Need to transfer your money to another “safe” bank account(s) which they provide details of. 3. In order to prove their own credentials they will often ask you to telephone the “fraud” number you may have on the back of your bank card, or they may even ask you to telephone the Police to check that there is an official investigation, or telephone your own bank once the phone call to them is terminated.

Do not be fooled!

Do not telephone anyone at that stage as the phone line remains open and you are simply telephoning them back without realising. They will then continue with your assistance in stealing your money by any of the above methods. PROTECT YOURSELF The bank or the police will never telephone you “out of the blue” to ask you to transfer money into another account or hand over any of your money or bank cards. It is your money!! The bank or the police will never ask for your personal bank account details, or pin numbers over the phone.

1. They will state that they are from the Bank Fraud department, the Police or other Law Enforcement.

If you really want to check the credentials of a caller then go into your bank and ask to speak to the bank manager or use another phone to call the bank or police.

2. They will tell the victim that fraud is being carried out on the victim’s bank account and that to prevent it they need to carry out any of the below activities:-

If you are still unsure then attend a police station. Never discuss your banking details with strangers who call you!

• Need to access your bank accounts online.

Euro Lottery Scam.

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau has seen an increase in Action Fraud reports where victims receive a letter from a company claiming to be the ‘Euro Millions Peoples International Postcode Lottery’. The amount of money they say you have won is typically £720,000 and the letter is usually signed by either ‘Peter LLOYD’ or ‘Johan NELSON’, with an address for the company similar to ‘202-205 Rue Wiertz/Wiertzstraat, Brussels B1099’. The letter may ask for a fee to release the funds or ask you to provide your personal details. Members of the public, who are rightly wary of this scam, have contacted Action Fraud to report the suspicious letters being delivered to them. Protect yourself: Never respond to any such communication. If you have not entered a lottery then you cannot have won it. Any request for a fee payment is a good indication that someone is trying to defraud you. Never disclose your bank details or pay any fees in advance to anyone or any company who you are unsure of. If you need to report a fraud, please call action fraud on 0300 123 2040 or use the action fraud reporting tool, via the action fraud website http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/. I would like to take this opportunity to thank residents for your continued support and remember, I am only an Email or a phone call away. Kind Regards

Ozzy O’shea. Working for you

Part of the appeal is seeing the cars we drive every day (such as VW, Audi, BMW, Toyota, Honda and Ford), battle it out on-track. A BRIEF HISTORY OF DONINGTON PARK

Donington Park started life as a motorsport venue in 1931. In 1971 it was purchased by local businessman Tom Wheatcroft, and it has played host to the British Motorcycle Grand Prix (1987), and the Formula 1 European Grand Prix (1993), with racing legends Barry Sheene and Ayrton Senna gracing the track. His investment programme continues, ensuring world-class standards are maintained.

The 30-40,000 die-hard BTCC fans go racing in all weathers, but I hope the weather gods smile on Donington this year. Only 20 minutes’ drive from Coalville, it is a convenient and enjoyable way to spend a Sunday or complete weekend. Racing starts late March, with the Superbikes here Easter weekend, and the Touring Cars returning 18 and 19 April.
