Teaching Life Saving Skills To All Teenagers English former rugby union player Martin Johnson CBE, Dr Doug Skehan, Dr Mike Ferguson and Mr Charles Poole visited Brookvale and Groby Learning Campus on Tuesday 3 December 2013 to promote their campaign to get a defibrillator into every secondary school in Leicester and Leicestershire, and to teach life saving skills to ALL teenagers in Leicester and Leicestershire secondary schools as well.

This campaign is a joint project with the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust and Leicester’s hospitals and is being led by Dr Doug Skehan from Glenfield Hospital. Students were interested to hear that Martin Johnson is backing this campaign partly because he knew Joe Humphries and his family personally. Joe Humphries was a Leicestershire school pupil who sadly died last year as a result of cardiac arrest. Dr Doug Skehan highlighted to some of Brookvale High School and Groby Community College students (pictured above) that in the UK we only save a third of those who could be saved by emergency action, and we would be able to improve survival rates by teaching life saving skills in school that will last a life time. This is the first such project in the country and could become a blueprint for other counties to follow. Ambassadors from all Leicester and Leicestershire schools will be invited to attend a launch event at the Leicester Tigers ground on 28 February 2014. Thank you to all our students who took part and thank you to Dr Doug Skehan, Martin Johnson and the team. Brookvale and Groby Learning Campus

BRADGATE LIONS CLUB NEWS During the last few weeks we have held a Comedy & Magic Evening in Botcheston and we have conducted our usual ‘Children in Need’ bucket collections in the local pubs and restaurants around Markfield, Copt Oak and Ratby. Altogether these events raised over £500.00 for our charity account, which will be banked together with our earlier efforts this year, and hopefully our future fund raising receipts, to be allocated to various charities at the end of our financial year in May. During December we will be out with our ‘Santa Sleigh’, weather permitting, touring around the streets in Anstey, Kirby Muxloe and Ratby with the help of the local schools groups, the Scouts, and the Girls and Lads Brigade. Last year we had to cancel most of these collections due to the inclement weather, but we will be hoping for better things this time around. We will be also collecting charity funds with our ‘Christmas Prize Draw Baskets’ in the local hostelries. We have 12 of these in place, so don’t forget that if you see one of these on display behind the bar somewhere, to ask the staff if you may enter the draw, and help with our fund raising. Also, giving ‘Santa’ a helping hand, and dressed in the appropriate costume, we will be visiting some of the local schools and nurseries at their end of term parties, with gifts for the children. And just before the ‘big day’ we will be doing our annual tour of the wards at Glenfield Hospital, along with members of Groby Church Choir, with carols, cards and ‘pressies’ for the patients. As you will properly have gathered from the activities outlined above, we are in for a very busy, but fun time, and would really welcome some new faces to join our team, as members of the club, or as occasional volunteers to help at some of our collections etc. Next year we will be celebrating our 25 anniversary, during which time we have raised and donated over £150,00.00 to International, National and Local causes and in order to carry on with our work, we would welcome you to join us. If you feel that you would like further information about our Club just call me on 01530 242912 and I and a colleague will visit you, to give you the facts of what we are all about. Kirby Muxloe Primary School Year 6 Fire Works Day Science Fair Goes With A Bang!

Gifted year 6 pupils spent the afternoon of fireworks day making rockets and learning all about how fireworks are made at Groby Community College. The 14 pupils from Kirby Muxloe Primary school were taking part in a special event at Groby Community College designed to challenge and enthuse gifted young scientists as part of Groby’s Primary Liaison work.

Additional Festive Park and Ride Services Extra park and ride services will run throughout December to make it easier for Christmas shoppers. The additional buses will run to Leicester city centre on Sundays throughout the month and on Boxing Day between 10am and 5.30pm. The services are operated by the city and county councils and run from the park and ride sites at Birstall, Enderby and Meynell’s Gorse. Peter Osborne, County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “There are some great festive shopping opportunities in Leicester. “However, as Christmas approaches and traffic to the city increases, finding a parking space can get trickier.

“We hope these extra services will make it easier for people who would like to experience a quick, stress free journey into town. The year 6 pupils started the afternoon off watching some spectacular demonstrations led by

A50/A46 Traffic Island We have all taken the pain over the past few months with the road works that are remodelling the island and slip roads from the A46. I use this route during rush hour traffic and have experienced the problems first hand. The work is due to be completed within the next two weeks. The traffic lights are now working.

island from Groby. The sequence I am informed will stop the traffic allowing motorists from Groby to enter the island. I am sure that once the work has been fully completed and the correct Traffic Light sequence put in place, it will benefit motorists from both Groby and Ratby villages that is what I am working for on behalf of residents.

I have had several complaints from residents informing me that the traffic is still building up in Groby and is no better now than it was before and that it is dangerous entering the island from Groby. I have spoken to the assistant Director of Highways who is over seeing this project and he has assured me that he will look into this issue. Please be assured I will work with officers to improve the traffic flow where we can.

City Of Culture Bid It was agreed to underwrite the Bid by the County Council, a bid that would not have even been short listed if evidence of County and City were not working together.

Officers informed me that they expect that it will take several weeks to tweak the sequence to get the correct flow. You will notice there are no lights governing traffic entering the

Had we won, I am sure the benefits to the County would have been huge for both the city and the County. The 2 million pounds that the County had put aside will now stay in reserves. Ratby Christmas Tree and Lights For several years our neighbouring villages have put up Christmas Lights, well this year

Ratby has its own and they look good. Several Businesses have joined in the festive mood and have dressed their windows the village is looking festive for a change. I would like to say thank you to the Parish Council for providing the village with Christmas lights this year. The tree I appreciate is different and some comments have been made regarding peoples wish for a traditional tree. However I am sure you will all agree when the tree is lit up at night it is an amazing sight. I would like to thank residents for their continued support and I would like to wish you all a very Happy and Peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Keep Safe During the Dark Nights AS winter approaches and the nights draw in, the Hinckley and Bosworth Community Safety Partnership is encouraging residents to keep themselves and their property safe. The Darker Nights Campaign aims to tell everyone in the community, young and old, what they can do to protect what is important to them. The partnership, which includes the police and local council, will be working alongside volunteers and community groups to advise people on how to make their property safer and reduce the chance of having property stolen or damaged. Some local residents, who may be vulnerable, will get light timers to use in their property, and may be able to get additional locks and security items fitted free of charge. Smart Water will also be available to buy at a reduced cost to mark any items of value. Councillor David Bill, Chair of the Community Safety Partnership, said: “With the darker nights approaching it is very important houses are secure, especially with our older population and more vulnerable residents. Lock front doors even when you are in the house and ensure car keys are placed away from letter boxes.”

Ratby Primary School News.... Children in Need Superheroes to the Rescue!

Anti-Bullying Week

Each year the children at Ratby Primary School support BBC Children in Need by taking part in traditional events such as a non-uniform day or a cake sale. But, this year, Miss Aitken threw down the gauntlet and invited children of all ages to come up with their own fundraising ideas. The results were simply amazing! The children decided that, as this year’s theme was “Superheroes”, both staff and children should pay a £1 donation to come to school dressed as either a superhero or their own personal hero. The corridors were filled with Batman, Spiderman and Iron Man; and in the classrooms suffragettes rubbed shoulders with footballers and pop stars. But this was just the start of things… The children organised, stocked and ran their own stalls in the morning and after school selling cakes, biscuits, friendship bracelets, masks and even origami animals! For staff it was a very proud moment – seeing how our children had worked so hard and given so much of their time, effort and money to support children who are less fortunate than them. The day was a great fun and, thanks to all of our selfless little entrepreneurs, we raised just over £500 – a new school record!

T’is the Season

It’s that time of year again and, as we race towards Christmas, primary school children race for the glitter! At Ratby we always start our festive celebrations with Decorations Day; when parents and carers are invited into school to spend the day making Christmas decorations with their children. As always, we had lots of willing helpers and every classroom was awash with glitter and glue, and more sequins than an episode of “Strictly Come Dancing”! The decorations produced looked beautiful, but the real delight was seeing the children having so much fun taking part in traditional crafts with their family and friends – the perfect start to the festive season.

After being awarded Leicestershire County Council’s “Beyond Bullying Award” last year, the children and staff at Ratby have been keeping up the good work; and were keen to raise the profile of the campaign during the national Anti-Bullying week, earlier this month. All of our children took part in special lessons designed to raise awareness of the issues surrounding bullying, and to promote understanding and acceptance of our individual differences. Older children focused on cyber bullying – discussing the damage that unkind text messages and emails can cause, and learning how to report and deal with them; whilst younger children used drama to explore a range of bullying scenarios. One of the highlights of the week was when some of our Peer Stars (accompanied by Mrs Hardy and Mrs Malin) were invited to Leicester City’s football ground to help promote events taking place throughout the county. The Peer Stars are a group of children, representing all ages in the school, who act as positive role models, advisors and even mediators; to help ensure that their classmates are safe and happy at school. These children had the chance to meet Filbert Fox, go on the pitch and even explore the locker rooms! After doing such a good job in school, this outing was a well-earned treat and a chance to show just how much Ratby children care.

Congratulations Lea! Lea Burns may look small, but she recently took part in the British Taekwondo Championships and brought home a bronze medal! Though Lea has been learning taekwondo for a little while now, the recent championships in Cardiff were her first tournament, and she was thrilled to come third in the ‘Tiny Tots’ category. Lea couldn’t wait to show her medal to the rest of the school, who were extremely impressed; and, when asked about her achievement, she said, “I was a bit nervous because it was a really important tournament. But when I won my medal I felt really, really happy. Now I’m looking forward to doing lots more tournaments.” Well done Lea – we are so proud of you!

Crimestoppers takes a stand against domestic violence in Leicestershire Members of the Crimestoppers Leicestershire and Rutland volunteer committee were at Loughborough Market on Saturday 23 November 2013 to raise awareness about the different types of domestic abuse. The event highlighted a common misconception that domestic violence only affects women with men seen to be the offenders. Despite one in four women and one in six men being victims of domestic abuse at some point in their lives, the number of incidents reported to the police are very small. Not only do the victims not want to speak out, other people are sometimes reluctant to get involved, even if they suspect there is a problem. Social media will be used to raise awareness of Crimestoppers and encourage members of the public to give information anonymously on the 0800 555 111 number, or via the anonymous online form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org Crimestoppers Vice chair for the East Midlands committee, Sue Witts said: “We want to encourage people to give information on all crime and through Crimestoppers. This is done completely anonymously without having to give a statement or go to court. "Everyone should be aware that domestic abuse affects all sectors of society and is no respecter of age, sexuality or ethnicity. By raising awareness we hope to help the victims of this crime by addressing this important issue.” If you suspect a family member or a friend is living with domestic violence call 0800 555 111 or give information on line at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

Council pledges improved information for deaf people A pledge to improve information for deaf people has been signed by Leicestershire County Council – the first shire authority to do so. The county council has signed up to the British Sign Language (BSL) charter, a commitment to work with the British Deaf Association to consult deaf people regularly and to give them better access to information and services. Examples of changes that the council has introduced already include: • Sending emails about bus timetable changes to groups which support deaf people • Launching a plain English campaign • Helping groups for deaf people to get in touch with health organisations and district councils County council chairman Rosita Page, who launched the charter, said: “The county council is committed to continue our efforts to make a positive change for deaf people in Leicestershire.” Robin Ash, empowerment and campaigns officer at the British Deaf Association, said: “We warmly welcome the council’s decision to sign up to the two pledges of the BDA’s BSL charter, to ensure equal access and empower local deaf residents to access council services across Leicestershire.”

Too much on your plate this Christmas? A campaign called “Too much on your plate this Christmas?” has been launched to encourage food waste reduction over the festive season. The Leicestershire Waste Partnership is encouraging residents preparing for the festivities to be savvy with their shopping and learn to love their leftovers. Last year more than 74 million mince pies and two million turkeys were thrown away in the UK over Christmas, a time of year that sees food waste rise by around 80 per cent. In a bid to help families save money and drive down the amount of good grub being sent to landfill, a series of helpful hints and tips and tried and tested festive recipes using leftovers have been uploaded to www.lesswaste.org.uk/christmas Pam Posnett, chairman of The Leicestershire Waste Partnership which is made up of the county, district and borough councils, said: “Christmas is a time to eat drink and be merry and people are already starting to buy food ahead of parties, family meals and get-togethers. “However we know that the average family wastes around £680 of edible food each year, with a large proportion of that being thrown out over the festive season. “We want people to enjoy Christmas but also be aware of quantities of food they are buying – planning meals and writing a shopping list can help with this – as well as thinking about making tasty Christmas meals out of leftovers. “This will not only help reduce the amount of good food we are throwing away but will also help families save money at the same time.” More information is available at www.lesswaste.org.uk/christmas “Love your leftovers” festive recipes that can be downloaded from the site include Christmas pudding strudel, lemon and mustard seed brussel sprouts.

Local Lad Looking To Make A Difference My name is Jamie Trusler, I am 16 years old, and i'm from and live in Ratby. Firstly I'll tell you a little about myself, I have been in St John Ambulance for 4 years, I am now Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland District Cadet of the year 2014, I'm also a Sergeant and Trainer. I have trained 500 people in Basic First Aid in 1 day, which was nationally recognized and I was put in a magazine and the Leicester Mercury, as well as having a invite to the Young Achievers Reception with Her Royal Highness Princess Anne next year, at Buckingham Palace. I have currently trained around 700 people. However, today I write to you, not about St John Ambulance, but the National Citizen Service, this scheme that commence over a 4 week period and is funded by the Government, originally founded by the Conservative party. If I ask you this question ''What do you think of young people of today?'' You'll probably say, anti social, criminal and violent. (As many said at Ratby Craft Fair last month.) This summer myself and 25,000 young people aged 16 to 17 years of age graduated from this program. As I said, it takes 4 weeks to complete, the first week is a residential, where you will be placed in localized groups, people who you've never seen before! Through out the week you complete team building exercises such as canoeing, raft build, abseiling and climbing. Towards the end of this week you begin to really bond with the new group of like minded people, have fun at events like a Talent show and alike. The second week is another residential at a university (Mine was at Leicester University) we are placed in our groups once again, however this week we enhance our skills, by learning entrepreneurial skills and learning life skills like First Aid. Following from that we start our 3rd and 4th week, these are the main and heart of the project. We start planning for our social action project on the 3rd week. (A social Action project is when our groups go out to the local community and make a difference, whether it be painting a local park, or funding for charities!) My Social Action Project was at Warning Zone, Leicester. Warning Zone is a local charity in Leicester, and its objective is to teach young people in year 6 important skills, such as Car Safety, Fire Safety, Cyber Bullying awareness and Railway Safety. Warning Zone is a great cause, and has great potential, this view is also shared with the Mayre of Leicester. Our job was to promote the awareness of this charity, and raise money for it! We even went on the Leicestershire Constabulary Twitter page promoting it, as well as ITV News and BBC News. Actually go out and do your project!! Now following this out of the 25,000 graduates this summer 100 people were selected to be National Ambassadors for the National Citizen Service, hats 0.04% of the 25,000 graduates. Or even more frighteningly that's 0.001% of 16 to 17 year old across the entire country!!! I joined the 99 other people, representing Leicester and my local provider LEBC (Leicestershire Education Business Company) This course happened last week, I visited the House of Commons where I met the Minister of Civil Service and many MP's. After this, 10 out the 100 people where selected to visit 10 Downing Street, and I was one of the 10. I had a tour around 10 Downing Street and we had a huge debate with the Prime ministers spokesman and the Minister of Civil Service, this lasted 3 hours in all! (Above is a photo of me outside 10 Downing street, as you can see, I was a little excited! haha) Throughout this week we had training courses like media, leading large groups etc. We have also met many great people, members of the NCS Trust, MP's Ministers, Lilly Cole, Stevie (From Miranda) and of course the other 99 graduates! Now my job is to change that horrible stereotype of young people today, its a big task, but i'm determined to make a difference! So last weekend, I went to Ratby Village Craft fair, and spoke to many, asked what they thought of young people, and what they want to see from us! I have spoken to members of the Ratby Village Society and they are willing to invite young people to help them organize the next village fete, so that both generations can work together, and learn from each other! I need to now find a group of willing 16-17 year olds who will help me make the change of the media stereo type. And when your walking down the street and you see a group of young people, you dont cross the road to avoid them!

Roadworks suspension ahead of Christmas Daytime work on a £2.7m scheme to relieve congestion and improve safety on one of Leicestershire’s busiest junctions will be suspended over the Christmas period. Leicestershire County Council is carrying out the work on the Asda / Fosse Park roundabout. Work will be suspended in the day from Friday, November 22 to January 6 for the busy Christmas shopping period. There will be some overnight work during this time which may result in some lane closures at night. In the day all carriageways will be open. Residents will be able to access the road from the Post House junction – diversions will be clearly signed. Peter Osborne, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “This is an important scheme which will help improve traffic flow and safety at this busy junction. “We recognise that the during the Christmas period the junction is particularly busy with people accessing Fosse Park, so in order to minimise congestion we will be suspending daytime work during the festive period. Work is due to be completed in early spring 2014. For more information on the project visit: www.leics.gov.uk/a5460_asda_roundabout-1.htm

We have got the Borough Councils full agreement that they will put the area into a full grass cutting maintenance program. Free parking in Hinckley this Christmas Christmas shopping in Hinckley will be given another big boost this year – thanks to free car parking schemes in the town during the festive season. In a joint initiative with the Hinckley Business Improvement District (BID), the Borough Council will be allowing free parking at all the long stay car parks in Hinckley on Saturday 7, 14 and 21 December in a bid to entice more shoppers into the town and increase trade for shopkeepers. The car parks included are those in: Alma Road, Brunel Road South, Druid Street, Holliers Walk, Lower Bond Street, Thorneycroft, Mount Road and Trinity Lane West. In addition, free parking sponsored by the BID will continue to be available in Church Walk short stay car park from noon every Tuesday until the end of December and shoppers can park for free on St Mary’s short stay car park every Saturday after 3pm.

Increase provision in rural areas

Friday and Saturday evening opening of youth facilities

Targeted at the most disengaged

Friday switch off British workers now ‘switch off’ for the weekend at 2.39pm on Fridays, according to a recent study. It seems that by Friday afternoon we feel that our employers have got their money out of us for the week, and so we take things just that bit easier. A third of us say that the atmosphere in the office is noticeably lighter on a Friday.

Aimed at improving outcomes for children and young people

Aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour

Promote volunteering opportunities

Provide added value from combining other funding streams

Aligned to support other provision

Aimed at working with children and young people (although not exclusively) from targeted neighbourhood areas including; Earl Shilton, Barwell, Hinckley Trinity, Burbage, St Catherine’s and Bagworth / Thornton.

Please note the grant is unable to fund projects where the activities take place during the school day. A funding guidance pack and application form can be downloaded from the Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council website at www.hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk/cypfund For more information please contact Rebecca Ball on 01455 255937 or Sarah Underwood on 01455 255784. Brookvale High School Is Proud To Support Rainbows Hospice Over the course of the last academic year (2012/13), Mississippi House, here at Brookvale High School, under the leadership of Mr Harvey Singh, Head of House/Maths Teacher, organised and took part in various events to raise money for Rainbows Hospice. Some of these many events included:

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group meets generally 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which generally take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Kirby Muxloe. Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe library as well as on the Group’s web site: www.leicestershirevillages.com/kmlhg Over 40 members and visitors much enjoyed the last meeting on Thursday 21st November, when Gareth King gave a talk ‘A History of Witches’. Our next meeting and the first in 2014 will take place on Thursday January 16th , when the Desford Pedallers will be giving a ‘Hands-on’ History of the bicycle. The following meeting, on Thursday 20th March, will take a ‘Virtual Walk’ through Richard III’s Leicester, and will be led by Widow Grooby (Alison Coates). The Group are always looking for photographs of people who have lived/worked in the village and events that have taken place in Kirby Muxloe. Some pictures of ‘Old’ Kirby Muxloe are now displayed in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, so if you visit the Hall, you might like to look at them.

• A Christmas, lunch time concert, where staff members performed their rendition of Band Aid’s ‘Do they know it’s Christmas?’ and the students paid an entry fee to watch, and be traumatised.... sorry mesmerised!!!! for the rest of the day! • Our annual ‘Brookvale’s Got Talent’ show. A run-up of auditions culminated in a fantastic show of many talents, where a number of our students sang, danced and performed comic and magical acts (to name but a few) to be crowned the ‘winner’ of the audience vote. (A couple of surprise acts filled in the gaps during the interval as well!!). Proceeds from tickets sold went into the charity pot. • A sponsored walk to, from and around Bradgate Park involving our Year 9 students from all Houses. Mississippi House are thrilled to announce that the grand total of monies raised amounts to £1,712.57 and particular thanks must go to Yangtse House, who donated all of their money to this particular charity. We were delighted to welcome a Rainbows volunteer, who came to Brookvale to accept the cheque on behalf of the charity. It was also a great pleasure to Mr Singh and Ms Rush, Brookvale, Mr Haylock, Ambassador for Rainbows, welcome back, and and students from Brookvale and Groby Community College, some of whom are say thank you, to in non uniform as they are raising money for Children in Need. last year’s Year 9 students, now Year 10 at Groby Community College, who played a major part in the raising of this money. Mississippi will be continuing their charity work over the course of this academic year, and ideas for events are already taking shape – watch this space!!!!!! Elaine Freeman

Urgent Appeal for Volunteer Families Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (West Leics) are urgently appealing for local families who could offer a secure, loving home for a child living with the after effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster for one month next summer. Group Coordinator John Buckby explained “We have a long waiting list of children who would really benefit from a month of respite from the conditions they endure in their homeland, but we are desperately short of volunteer host families living within commuting distance of Markfield who are able to offer them a loving home for one month.

“Whilst we will do what we can to prevent underage sales, we would ask parents to ensure their children are aware of the effects of alcohol and the legality around buying it.” As a result of the sales, six penalty notices and five warning letters were issued. Two businesses also had additional alcohol licence conditions added to their licences, requiring them to improve their procedures to help avoid selling alcohol to those aged under 18.

Hosting can be a hugely rewarding experience and I would love to hear from anyone who is interested in working in partnership with the charity to provide a lifechanging recuperative holiday for a child from Belarus. My fingers are firmly crossed that local families will come forward in time.” For more information about the charity’s Family Hosting Program, visit www.focc-westleics.webs.com or contact John Buckby on 01455 285799 e-mail john.evolution@btinternet.com. That is the message from Leicestershire County Council’s Trading Standards Service in the wake of a series of test purchase operations. More than one in three retailers sold alcohol to teenagers aged either 14,15 or 16 during test purchase operations that were carried out between July and October (27 attempts by teenagers resulted in 11 sales carried). Pam Posnett, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Trading Standards, added: “As part of Alcohol Awareness Week we would also ask parents and carers to be vigilant – do you know what your children are drinking?

Although the children will not be arriving until 2nd August 2014, there are lots of formalities that have to be completed in Belarus before the children are able to travel to the UK and time is against us. We need to sign up any potential hosts by midJanuary at the very latest if we are to stand any chance of offering a place next summer to just some of the children on that waiting list.

Do you know what your children are drinking?

Dave Bull, Head of Leicestershire County Council’s Trading Standards Service, said: “It is always disappointing when a business sells alcohol to a child and we will continue to advise businesses about the law, which quite frankly is fairly simple - do not sell alcohol to under 18s. If in doubt ask for photo identification to check their age.” Detective Superintendent Andy Lee of Leicestershire Police said: “We work in partnership with licensing departments and trading standards teams in an attempt to minimise risk to young people in communities. “We also ask the public that, if approached outside a shop by young people asking for alcohol to be bought for them, do not do so but report it through to 101, Crimestoppers or by contacting your local trading standards officers via Citizens Advice 08454 04 05 06.” It is illegal for retailers to sell alcohol to under-18s and persistent offenders are liable to a maximum fine of £20,000. Buying alcohol on behalf of under 18s can also result in a fine of £90. If you are a parent / carer and have concerns or questions about your child drinking, useful information can be found at www.drinkaware.co.uk Residents who have concerns about their own drinking can talk to their local GP or speak to drug and alcohol charity Swanswell in confidence on 0300 303 5000 Leicestershire County Council’s Trading Standards Service offer advice and guidance packs to businesses about underage sales. Health Matters in yourLOCAL... Making Sure a Merry Christmas Leads To a Happy and Healthy New Year As party season is drawing near, it comes with a whole host of health problems. Everyone even those disciplined throughout the year make the most of the festive season, with all the eating, drinking and merrymaking. This can take its toll especially with people with chronic medical conditions. The first to suffer tend to be those prone to digestive or stress-related conditions. People prone to digestive conditions may experience bouts of diarrhoea, indigestion, heart burn, bloating, nausea and vomiting. This can be due to eating spicy foods, eating big heavy meals, eating too fast and drinking excess alcohol. Diarrhoea can lead to dehydration, so you should drink plenty of fluids (small, frequent sips of water), sometimes oral rehydration sachets may also be necessary. Loperamide (available without prescription) is the main medicine used to treat diarrhoea as it has been shown to be effective and has few side effects. Indigestion and heartburn can be treated using antacids such as Rennie and Gaviscon. There are also products available to treat bloating and nausea, the strongest of which is Motilium. It is licensed for nausea and bloating, but speak to one of our highly trained pharmacist first before purchasing them as they are not suitable for everyone. People prone to stress and anxiety can experience a variety of symptoms. The stress and anxiety bought on by an overload of guests, over-excited children, extra expenses etc. can take its toll on an individual’s overall health. Simple measures can reduce the stress and anxiety, such as making time for yourself to relax, doing plenty of exercise as this releases endorphins in the brain and can be uplifting, and having early nights when possible. If there is still a persistent lack of energy, iron supplements or a product like Metatone Tonic may help. During Christmas most people over indulge and studies by the British Nutrition Foundation have shown that people on average gain 5lb (2kg) in the four-week Christmas period. This extra weight gain can be hard to lose, but a few healthy habits such a brisk walk and snacking on fruit and vegetables rather than chocolate can help reduce this weight gain.

Another common ailment during the festive season is headaches, normally bought on by poor posture, stress, lack of sleep, bright flickering lights and specific foods (e.g. Chocolate, cheese and citrus fruit). Headaches are an inconvenience at any time and sufferers normally want immediate relief. There are a range of effective pain killers available depending on the type of headache. There are also simple and natural measures which are also effective such as menthol balms, sticks or strips applied directly to the forehead. Other things to try include having a warm bath, massaging the neck and shoulders and sitting or lying in a darkened room. The main complaint after excessive alcohol consumption is the Hangover. After a night of heavy drinking, the symptoms most people are all too familiar with, can include, headaches, sickness, dizziness, dehydration, diarrhoea and tiredness. If you do experience a hangover, you can take pain killers, antacids, rehydration sachets and drink plenty of water. Eating bananas and kiwis are good as they have high source of potassium which counteracts the potassium lost from the diuretic effect of alcohol. Things to avoid are caffeine containing drinks (Tea, Coffee, Energy Drinks etc.) because although they give you a temporary lift, they may also cause further dehydration. All of the above symptoms are readily treatable from the pharmacy and don’t need

a visit to the GP. All you need is a well-stocked medicines cabinet to ensure you do not suffer throughout the festive period. At the Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe we have all of the medicinal products in stock and to relieve the stress of extra expense on gifts, we now have designer fragrances and gift sets at massively reduced prices, cheaper than all your high street stores. We are that confident on our fragrances and gift set prices that if you find them cheaper elsewhere on the high street we will give you the difference plus 10% extra back!! (T&Cs apply). If you would like any more information on anything mentioned above, please call us on 0116 2387353 or pop in to the Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe, where one of our highly trained pharmacists will be happy help. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers for their support throughout the year and for helping our small independent pharmacy to continue providing services to the community. Alcohol does NOT help you sleep A night cap may make your sleepy at the beginning of the night, but the quality of your sleep will suffer. It seems that alcohol disrupts your sleep later in the night, and you get less rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which makes you feel less rested when you wake up. During REM sleep, which should last up to 25 per cent of the night, the brain becomes more active, performing the vital task of reorganising your memory. So a lack of REM can harm your concentration, motor skills and memory. The research was done at the London and Edinburgh Sleep Centres.

Glenfield U3A – News Update The Glenfield U3A entered into its fourth year in November, which means some Committee members have to stand down from their current roles at the next AGM. The Committee and members would particularly like to thank the ‘Chair’ Carol Knill for having the vision and drive to set up this branch of the U3A, Janet Fenton for her tireless work as membership secretary, Gail Nunn for organising all the group ‘start ups’ and Dennis Bradley, Vice Chair, and to all the other Committee members who have worked so hard to make the organisation such a success. It has been a busy few months for the Glenfield U3A, with new groups being formed and existing groups thriving. Walking group 2 is now well established and the Strolling group continues to grow. German conversation started in September and in the New Year there will be two further groups ‘Walk & Talk’ and a ‘Discussion’ group. Due to popular demand there was a repeat of the 60’s Night held in May. 110 tickets were sold within just a few days of going on sale. 60’s Sound entertained their audience with popular songs from the 1960’s and the geriatrics of Glenfield were gyrating from the first song played. Not an arthritic knee in sight! The ‘Baby Boomers’ of the 1940’s and 50’s doing the twist and rock and roll would put any youngster to shame. Yvonne, from Café 27 in Ratby catered for the event, providing a superb jacket potato, cold meat and salad buffet followed by a very tasty sweet. The Days Out group organised another visit to the Houses of Parliament and a visit to the Leeds Variety Club. During December the group will be visiting Thursford and plans for further visits next year are in hand. The gardening group has blossomed and had to find new premises for their indoor meetings. They now meet at the Ratby Sports Club. At the November meeting the gardening group programme for the forthcoming year was formulated. Visits include The Bluebell Arboretum (always a favourite), Japanese Meditation Garden, Whatton House and Gardens, Kelmarsh Hall and Gardens and Melbourne Hall and Gardens. The group will be having another stall at the U3A Craft Fair on 29th March and will be busy over the winter preparing plants and Spring bulbs for sale. A second table tennis group has started up and they play on a Wednesday evening at Ratby Sports Club for those that can’t make the Thursday afternoon meeting at Beaumont Leys. The history group visited the premises of Norman & Underwood in November, where Dr Jon Castleman DSc (Managing Director), a seventh generation descendent of the company’s founders, gave a presentation on the restoration work of the company on such projects as Windsor Castle and Lincoln Cathedral. The company was founded in 1825 and is Leicester’s oldest remaining family run business. Their hospitality was second to none. On arrival we had hot or cold drinks and biscuits. After the presentation we were given ‘high viz’ jackets to don for a tour of the workshops where we saw a demonstration of lead making and glass cutting. After the demonstrations we were treated to a buffet lunch. The members donated £49.50 for LOROS to Dr Castleman. Several social events have been organised over the past twelve months and over £800 has been donated to Charities including Macmillan, MS therapy centre, LOROS, Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation, Save the Children and Cruse. There will be another New Year Luncheon at St Peter’s Church Centre on Tuesday 7th Jan 2014 following on from the success of last year’s luncheon. If you enjoy your food but don’t like bothering to cook then the Glenfield U3A is for you. Meals feature strongly with many of the groups especially at this time of the year! If you are interested in any of our activities and have entered your ‘third age’ (are retired or semi-retired) then why not join? Membership is only £1 per month + an annual fee to head office for insurance of £3.50. Please take a look at our website it is full of information and membership forms are available on line. www.u3asites.org.uk/glenfield or email glenfieldu3a@aol.com or telephone Carol Knill - 0116 2919464 Gill Tapping Publicity Officer, Website & Newsletter Editor.
