RSPCA Gala Day
Woodside Animal Centre in Leicester will be holding their annual fun-filled Gala Day on Sunday 21 September which promises to be the biggest and best yet. This year’s Gala Day, named Care4Paws, will celebrate Woodside’s 40 year contribution to animal welfare in Leicestershire. The Gala Day will see the charity make a huge announcement that will dramatically improve animal welfare in Leicestershire. The Care4Paws Gala Day promises to be a whole day of fun for all the family. There will be a selection of RSPCA stalls, the all new craft corner and a traditional dog show. Refreshments will also be available including a barbeque and pop up tea room. Woodside’s Branch and Charity Development Manager, Gary said: “This year our Gala Day is bigger than ever, and I am so excited to tell everyone about our plans to completely change animal welfare in Leicestershire. If you are an animal lover you won’t want to miss out on this special day. “Our Gala Day is a fantastic opportunity for every member of the family, young and old, to get involved in some fun, games and entertainment, which of course is all for a great cause.” The centre, which takes in thousands of animals every year, is affiliated to the RSPCA but receives no money from the national society or government, and depends entirely on donations and fundraising events for its survival. The Care4Paws Gala Day will be held at Woodside Animal Centre, Scudamore Road on Sunday 21 September from 10am – 4pm entry is priced at £2 which you can pay on the gate. Leicester players joined hundreds of musicians in the Dorset village of Sturminster Newton this summer for one reason, the Wessex Band Summer School. All ages and all abilities have been welcomed to the course for the past 44 years and the 45th year of the course proved to be no exception. The course is divided into 3 bands, the training band (brass, woodwind and percussion graded 0-4), the wind band (brass, woodwind and percussion graded 5-8) and the brass band (brass and percussion graded 5-8). This year over 200 students played across the 3 bands, practicing Monday to Friday before wowing a local audience with a concert on the Saturday.

Walk on the Wildside needs walkers! With only two weeks to go, the Fundraising Team at LOROS are becoming concerned that numbers for their annual Walk on the Wildside event in September are low in comparison to previous years. The charity is asking supporters to dig out their walking boots on Sunday 14th September and join the sponsored walk over Bradgate Park. Starting and finishing at The Severn Trent Water Visitor Centre, Cropston. This year there are three routes to choose from. A 5 mile walk commencing at 10.30am, an 11 mile walk starting a little earlier at 9.30am and the NEW Toddler Trail. Everyone participating will receive a goody bag and certificate on the day. Food will also be available along with a lively warm-up sessions, children’s activity area, outdoor activity trail for the children and much more! Christian Weikert-Picker, Event Organiser said, “With numbers looking low we want to encourage the whole family to enjoy the day! This year we have a new route called The Toddler Trail which is suitable for the little ones, pushchairs and wheelchair users. Please join us for a sponsored walk that leads you through the historic Deer Park, past the ruins of Bradgate House to the ancient, atmospheric woodland of Swithland Woods. “Without sponsored events such as these, we would not be able to continue to provide our valuable care and support to terminally-ill patients and their families living in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. “There is a nominal fee to register of £5 for adults and £2.50 for children. Please register online at loros.co.uk/wow or call LOROS on 0116 231 8431 for your FREE sponsorship pack. Last chance to register is Friday 12th September 2014.”

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ratby, Kirby Muxloe & Leicester Forest East areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction
that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

KIRBY MUXLOE PARISH COUNCIL PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE Many residents of Kirby Muxloe will be aware that our Parish Council has been through some extraordinarily difficult times in the past few years. Last year, two highly critical reports, one by the Audit Commission, the other by a firm of solicitors, Wilkin, Chapman and Goolden, in response to complaints, led to the eventual resignation of all members of the Parish Council and the termination of the employment of the Clerk. Since July 2013, the Parish Council has been run by a small group of experienced temporary councillors appointed by Blaby District Council. In March 2014, following an application and selection process, Blaby District Council appointed seven more councillors, all residents of Kirby Muxloe. A recent election for a single casual vacancy brought the Council's membership up to 14. All new Councillors are being trained and mentored in the duties and responsibilities of councillors. The unsatisfactory state of the parish's financial affairs, its policies and procedures and its record keeping was far greater than anyone had anticipated and needed fundamental re-shaping. A great deal of work has been completed by the appointed Council, including: • Implementing recommendations made by the Audit Commission to the Commission's satisfaction; • Implementing recommendations made by Wilkin, Chapman and Goolden to their satisfaction; • Ensuring that the Council is now on a sound financial footing; • Establishing a full set of policies and Financial Regulations;
• Renegotiation of ground maintenance contracts at considerable saving to the Council; • Identifying and negotiating to regularize the position of some Trust land leases, cancelling past illegal contracts; • Working with the Residents' Action Group to oppose planning permission for the proposed development of the land behind Barry Close, which was refused; • Moving towards the employment of a fully qualified full-time Clerk. There is much that has gone wrong here, from the very serious to the petty. We are constrained by awaiting the outcome of some 200 documents sent to the police. A lot of money has been paid over the last few years for expert legal advice in relation to the former Clerk and to issues related to Trust lands. Together with the very large expenses for the Audit Commission and Wilkin, Chapman and Goolden's investigation and report, this means that the Council's financial position, though solvent, is under pressure. In recent weeks, the Council has been working without sufficient administrative help, so it is perhaps inevitable that it has wanted to do more. The Council has been working under extreme pressure and it should be remembered that all councillors are unpaid volunteers whose primary aim is to bring stability and confidence back after a prolonged period of dysfunction. Much of the chaos of the past has now been sorted out and the Parish Council can move forward. It can consider developing a vision for Kirby Muxloe's future. Nevertheless, some significant issues remain, including dealing with final resolution of Trust related matters.
The initially directly appointed councillors will return to their own Parish Councils at the end of April 2015. Elections for all 14 councillors will be held in May 2015 by which time the outstanding matters will hopefully have been resolved and the village will be able to move forward on a democratically elected basis, with proper procedures embedded and a stable financial situation in place. The Council is keen to encourage greater involvement from local people. We hope you will feel free to approach any councillor with your interests and concerns. In particular, we would like to have ideas from residents about how the village should develop in the future. In the meantime, we list below the current councillors and you should feel able to contact any of them via the Council Office. You are also welcome to call in at the Council office during opening hours. Temporary Independent Appointed Councillors: Tony Greenwood (Chair) Thelma Abbott Lynne Adlam Martin Broomhead Stuart Coar Malcolm Fox Elected Councillor: Chris Ball Temporary Appointed Local Councillors: Ruth Buckingham David Collinson Liz Collinson Caroline Henton Chris Jackson Paul Lewis Rachel Tansey
Apply online for secondary school places Parents are urged to look out for the school place application packs for children who transfer to secondary school in the autumn term 2015 that will be landing on their doormats over the next couple of weeks. Remember that moving to the next school is not automatic and parents need to apply for a place before the 31st October 2014 closing date. The transfer process is the same for all community, voluntary controlled, voluntary aided, academy, foundation, trust, faith, free or studio schools. If parents apply late - even if they live next door to the school their child is unlikely to get a place. You can apply online at www.leics.gov.uk/admissions. For general enquiries about the admissions process please call the Customer Service Centre on 0116 305 6684. Online applicants will receive an email acknowledging receipt and be able to view the decision on 2nd March 2015.

MP WELCOMES NEW SUPPORT FOR CRIME VICTIMS David Tredinnick, Member of Parliament for Bosworth, has welcomed proposals set out by Sir Clive Loader, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicestershire, aimed at improving support to local victims of crime. In July 2012, the Ministry of Justice set out proposals focused on increasing support services to help victims and witnesses cope with the immediate impact of crime and to recover from the harm experienced. As part of the changes, responsibility for commissioning victimspecific support services will now be held locally under Police and Crime Commissioners. In terms of commissioning services for victims and witnesses, Sir Clive Loader’s initiative focuses on the three following areas: • Commissioning an Integrated Victim Service which will track victims of recorded and self-reported crime throughout the criminal justice system. This victim-focused service will provide information, advice, practical support and access to ‘cope and recover’ services according to crime type and victim vulnerability/need. • Providing funds to protect and provide the provision of a minimum standard of support, regardless of place of residence within Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland • Commissioning a practical support/target hardening service for those assessed as vulnerable and/or at high risk of repeat victimisation. David Tredinnick said, “I welcome the efforts for improved focus on the victims of crime and their specific needs as it is vital that they are given all possible support during their interaction with the criminal justice system. Locally introduced and monitored measures for adopting a more understanding approach to the likely problems and stress experienced by crime victims and witnesses is crucial to ensuring their needs are fully addressed and supported.”
Saturday Coffee Mornings
Regular Saturday coffee mornings are held alternately in Ratby Methodist Chapel or the Parish Church rooms from 10am to 12 noon, where a very warm welcome awaits you. On Saturday 6th September it is the turn of the Parish Church to act as host, and joining us for their annual get-together will be several spritely villagers who have reached the age of 90 or over - we think it's something to do with the water! Please come along, enjoy your coffee, and perhaps discover the secret of a long and happy life.

Nature’s Drama
The incredible story of the River Trent is soon to come to life on the stage, thanks to a partnership between RSPB’s newest wetland nature reserve Beckingham Marshes, local youth group PACS, and amateur dramatics society Kismet. Supported by generous funds of £399,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), Marshsongs, a moving celebration of theatre, music, dance, poetry and visual arts, is the result of a unique collaboration between local drama groups and a wetland creation project along the River Trent. Michael Copleston, Site Manager for RSPB Beckingham Marshes says: “The performance is a phenomenal piece of work that vibrantly tells the story of the River Trent through the ages from Viking settlements, willow weaving industry up to the present day with a running theme of how the wildlife of the landscape ebbs and flows with human influence.” The first two performances will be held on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 September at 7:30pm in Beckingham Village Hall. The final performances will be held on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 September at 7:30pm in Gainsborough Old Hall. Local groups PACS and Kismet are based in the Gainsborough area, the performance tells the story of the mighty river Trent and how the culture and heritage of the local community has transformed alongside a dramatically changing landscape for wildlife. Michael adds: “Its been an absolute joy to witness our local drama groups out on the reserve experiencing and drawing inspiration from the wildlife of the marshes, from brown hares boxing, lapwing tumbling in the vast skies to dragonflies flitting over the wetland areas. Kerry Greenwood from Kismet says: “We've loved being involved in the project. As a company, we have never tackled anything like this before, so it has been a challenge but one we have learned so much from and we are very proud of what we have put together. “Not only that, but members of Kismet have become fascinated by the work of the RSPB, some of us have even joined as members which has been a real pleasure. We are certain we have developed a production with wide appeal which truly reflects a community response to the Beckingham Marshes wetland project and which will be full of surprises, so we hope very much people will come along and experience what we have created!” Michael Copleston says: “Please come along and support this one-off local event, we would all love to see the show reach as many people as possible.” For further information and to book tickets for one of the performances, visit: www.kismettheatrecompany.com. Jobs And Skill Fair Leicestershire County Council together with Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council and Jobcentre Plus are promoting the Jobs and Skills Fair which is to be held on Thursday 25th September 2014 between 2pm & 5pm in Hinckley Leisure Centre. Between 1pm – 2pm we are inviting those who are furthest from the labour market – e.g. Ex-offenders; people with serious health issues; individuals from Supporting Leicestershire Families; young people in care etc. to come along prior to the public opening to discuss employment and training opportunities. We hope to have a good array of employers; recruitment agencies and training providers. The fair will have an emphasis on the logistics and engineering sectors, but not exclusively. This is a partnership event between Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, Leicestershire County Council and Jobcentre Plus. Temporary Road Closure Of: Bridleway R115, Ratby Ivanhoe Trail. In order to safely gain access to the motorway bridge for repairs, Leicestershire County Council Highways have agreed to closure of the above Bridleway, between Taverner Drive and Mill Lane. The Highways Agency will close the above bridleway whenever there are vehicles requiring access to the site. There will marshals on site to guide members of the public through the works. The works will commence on the 1st September and last for up to 20 weeks. During the closure the alternative route will be signed on site. Once the Highways Agency has completed this work the County will complete the works and tarmac along this stretch of the Ivanhoe Trail. The County Council expects the completion of this section of the Ivanhoe trail to be completed in January 2015. This will then complete the up rated footpath between Ratby and Glenfield.
I regularly receive numerous complaints with regards to people parking their vehicles on the pavement and grass verges. I would urge drivers not to park on the pavements and to consider pedestrians mothers with push chairs and disabled mobility scooter riders. The verges were not provided as car parks and I would urge drivers to not park on grass verges and open spaces. The weather is about to change as we head towards autumn, the grass gets churned up and a muddy mess is left behind. The County Council is not in a position to repair damaged areas. Ratby Annual Show I would like to end by saying a big thank you to Fay Stevens and the show girls for putting together this excellent community show and for inviting me to hand out the prizes which was a privilege. Well done to all the prize winners. I would also like to thank Ratby Sports Club for providing the room free of charge.

Temporary Traffic Lights on the Highway. I was recently contacted by concerned residents regarding Temporary Traffic Lights that had been left on Groby Road Ratby with no one working at them. Infact the only works being carried out was in the entrance to the New Cawrey Home development and there was simply no need for traffic light control along Groby Road. I contacted officers who arranged to the utility company to collect that day. The lights were removed within a couple

Glenfield U3A Have fun, make friends, stay fit and exercise the mind. That is the ethos of the Glenfield branch of the U3A. Membership has expanded to over 230 members in four years and we can now boast over 30 active and thriving groups. Some groups are so popular that we have created second or third groups on the same topic to avoid disappointment. The current groups include; Art appreciation, Badminton, Bird watching/natural history, Board games, Card making, Computing, Craft, Cycling, Days Out, Discussion, Family History, Film Club, Flower arranging, Gardening, German for beginners, History (1 & 2), Indoor bowls, Luncheon (1 & 2), Photography, Pilates, Reading (1 & 2), Strollers, Table tennis, Tai Chi, Walk & talk (local history), Walking (1,2,& 3) and Writers. Some groups are for the creative, some for the intellectual, some for the sporty, and some for the social. Many of the groups overlap and cover all those aspects mentioned. There is something for everyone and if there isn’t, then tell us and we will do our best to create a new group.
band Hint of Mint and the club supplied a superb buffet. It was another excellent night which will no doubt be repeated next year. Events in August included an outing to Trentham gardens, a gardening group visit to Melbourne Hall and gardens, and a tea tasting/cream tea at the monthly meeting. More events to add to your diary: – At the monthly meeting on Thursday 25th September, the speaker, Val Williams will talk about an Arctic Experience. Members will be bringing (and buying) cakes, and proceeds from this meeting will be donated to Macmillan. On Saturday 4th October there will be a Barn Dance at St Peter’s Church Centre. Tickets are £10 and include live music and a buffet. On Thursday23rd October at the monthly meeting, the speaker, Margaret Baldwin will be talking about the Stoney Cove Diving School.
Following on from the success of the formation of a Catering team, Angela Barbour, the membership secretary, now has a Welcoming team on hand at the monthly meetings to greet new members – we realise how daunting it can be for some people to attend gatherings on their own and we try to make our meetings as friendly and as welcoming as possible.
Another Glenfield U3A ‘Roadshow’ will be held during the morning of Tuesday 4th November at the Scout HQ, Glenfield. Featuring information and displays on all the existing groups and potential new groups. This is your chance to meet with Committee members and group co-ordinators. If you are interested in joining and can’t make a Thursday afternoon meeting then why not pop in and see us at the roadshow. Have a chat over a cup of tea and biscuits and see what we have to offer.
Apart from group activities we organise a number of Social events throughout the year. Over 70 members attended the Summer Special held at the Ratby sports club at the end of June. They danced the night away to music from the 60’s and 70’s played by local
On Wednesday 5th November the Gardening group have arranged for speaker, Mike Dunnett to talk on ‘Gardening Made Easy’ this event will be at the newly refurbished Ratby Sports Club. Tickets are £5 and include cakes and refreshment
On Thursday 27th November at the monthly meeting, there will be a talk on Farming and Wildlife by Andrew Parsons. In December there will be a Christmas party at St Peter’s Church centre and to end the year on a high, members will be travelling to Thursford Christmas spectacular on Saturday 13th December. Thinking of joining the U3A then why not bring fresh ideas and join the Committee too – what better way to become involved in the organisation and make new friends? Do you have a special interest or talent that you are prepared to share? If so we would love to hear from you. If you are interested in any of our activities and have entered your ‘third age’ (are retired or semi-retired) then why not join? Membership is only £1 per month + an annual fee to head office for insurance of £3.50. Monthly meetings are held at 2pm on the fourth Thursday of the month at St Peter’s Church Centre, Glenfield. There is usually a round up of U3A news followed by a guest speaker, refreshments and a chance for a natter with friends old and new. The new Welcoming team will be there to meet and greet visitors at these meetings and discuss group activities and introduce you to group co-ordinators. Please take a look at our website www.u3asites.org.uk/glenfield it is full of information, newsletters, committee meeting minutes, useful links. Membership forms are available on line. “The Love Punch”. Category: Comedy [3*], UK 2013, (PG13) Spanning locations in Paris, London and the French Riviera The Love Punch is the story of ex-husband and wife Richard and Kate, whose biting banter suggests that the flames of their former relationship have not been fully extinguished . . . Learning that the unscrupulous French financier behind the scheme has just purchased a $10million diamond for his bride-to-be, the divorced duo grudgingly agrees to set aside their differences, and hatch a plot to gate-crash the wedding and steal the diamond. BIRD FEEDERS CAN BE VIRUS BREEDERS The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust is asking people who feed birds in their gardens to be extra vigilant about cleaning their bird feeders after a severe case of Avian Pox was confirmed in Leicestershire. Avian pox is a skin condition that affects many bird species commonly found in gardens. It causes lesions particularly on the face of birds which look like warty tumours. In severe cases these lesions grow very large and can affect the bird’s vision which ultimately results in a greater risk of predation or a slow death from starvation. In this case a Dunnock was spotted in a Cropston garden.
ideally once a week. Infected birds are not always obvious and it is better to be safe than sorry. By feeding birds homeowners are encouraging birds to congregate in the same place time after time therefore increasing the risk of diseases being passed on. Simple good hygiene routines can allow people to carry on enjoying their garden birds without the risk posed by this and other nasty diseases.”
The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust recommend that the public should contact the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) for further advice or to report possible cases. The BTO are running a Garden Bird Health Initiative and they want people to report suspected cases to them so that they can track the disease across the country. They can be contacted at www.bto.org .
Neil Pilcher, Senior Conservation Officer said “This poor Dunnock was spotted in someone’s garden hopping around under a feeder. From the photo we received it was clear that this was a severe case of Avian Pox. The home owner in this case is very careful about hygiene issues with feeding birds and cleaned their feeders every week. This is excellent as it reduces the chance of the disease being spread to other birds using the feeders. This case highlights the need for everyone to be vigilant as this was the first occasion that this bird had been seen in this particular garden. Therefore it is highly likely that it had been visiting other gardens and feeders in the area which are all at risk of spreading the disease if they are not regularly cleaned. The Trust is calling on everyone who loves feeding birds in their gardens to get into the routine of cleaning their feeders regularly,

Have your say on new plans for Blaby District Blaby District Council is asking residents what they think about new plans for the district in 2015-2018. Using recent resident surveys, census information, health data, government statistics, and workshops with partners and staff, the Council is developing a number of priorities to focus on. Councillor Ernie White, Leader of Blaby District Council, said: “Our vision is that Blaby District is made up of thriving and vibrant communities where people are happy and able to live, work and visit. “We are currently reviewing our plans and along with partners, we want to make sure we focus our energies and resources on the areas that are most important to our residents, will make the biggest difference to their lives and have the biggest impact on the district. “We’re asking residents to tell us what they think – have we chosen the right priorities for our district? What changes would they like to see happen?” Residents can take part by filling out a short online survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BlabyPlan2015-18 - and will have until Friday 26 September 2014 to have their say. An accompanying fact sheet is also available on the Blaby District Council website. For more information or to request a paper copy of the survey please email corporate.performance@blaby.gov.uk or call 0116 272 7732.

Health Matters in yourLOCAL... Colds and Flu The Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe is launching an exciting new private flu vaccination service from the end of September, so I thought it would be appropriate to write an article on Colds and Flu. As the days are getting shorter and average temperatures have dropped, it marks that summer is coming to an end. It is around this time where the hay-fever season stops and we approach the cold and flu season. Everyone has experienced these conditions at some point in their lives. Colds and flus affect 15 million people each year in the UK. Often people make unnecessary trips to their GP when they should be resting at home. This creates a massive burden on the GP’s time when they could be dealing with more serious conditions. Colds and flu share some of the same symptoms (sneezing, coughing, sore throat), but are caused by different viruses. Flu can be much more serious than a cold. If you're generally fit and healthy, you can usually manage the symptoms of a cold or flu yourself without seeing a doctor. Look after yourself by resting, drinking non-alcoholic fluids to avoid dehydration and avoiding strenuous activity. Painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can relieve aches and pains. A cold is a mild viral infection of the nose, throat, sinuses and upper airways. There are around 200 viruses that cause colds. Symptoms of a cold include: • Runny nose, beginning with clear mucus that develops into thicker, green mucus as the cold progresses • Blocked nose • Sore throat • Sneezing • Cough People with a cold may also suffer with a mild fever, earache, tiredness and headache. Symptoms develop over one or two days and can last for up to two weeks. Usually it's a self-limiting infection – this means it gets better by itself without the need for prescription treatment and no need to see your GP. Flu is a highly infectious and common viral illness. It's not the same as the common cold. Flu is caused by a different group of viruses and symptoms tend to be more severe and last for longer. You can catch flu – short for influenza – all year round, but it is especially common in winter, which is why it is also known as 'seasonal flu'. Flu causes a sudden high temperature, headache and general aches and pains, tiredness and sore throat. You can also lose your appetite, feel nauseous and
26
have a cough. Flu symptoms can make you feel so exhausted and unwell that you have to stay in bed and rest until you feel better. A third of the population think flu is just a bad cold, but each year thousands of people die of complications following flu. So it is worth knowing the difference between the two. The symptoms of flu and the common cold can be very similar. Here's how to tell the difference: • Flu symptoms come on quickly and include fever and aching muscles. They also make you feel too unwell to continue your usual activities • Cold symptoms come on gradually and affect just your nose and throat. The symptoms are fairly mild so you can still get around and are usually well enough to go to work. Whether you have a Cold or Flu, there is usually no need to see your GP as they can be treated symptomatically at the Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe. Because these infections are viral, prescribed antibiotics will not work. However, you should see your GP if your symptoms have lasted longer than 2 weeks, are 65 or over, are pregnant, have a long-term medical condition such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, kidney or neurological disease or have a weakened immune system. This could mean that flu can be more serious for you, and your doctor may want to prescribe antiviral medication. Antiviral medicine can lessen the symptoms of flu and shorten its duration, but treatment needs to begin soon after flu symptoms start for it to be effective. So it would be wise to see your GP straightaway. The best way to protect yourself from getting flu is by having the flu vaccine. The vaccine stimulates your body’s immune system to make antibodies to attack the flu virus. Antibodies are proteins that recognise and fight-off germs, such as viruses, that have invaded your blood. If you catch the flu virus after you've had the vaccination, your immune system will recognise it and
immediately produce antibodies to fight it. It may take 10-14 days for your immunity to build up fully after you have had the flu shot. The antibodies that protect you from the flu will then gradually decrease over time. The flu strains can also change from year to year. Therefore, you need to have a flu jab every year to ensure that you have the best protection against the latest strain of the virus. During October each year a flu vaccine is available free on the NHS. The NHS targets certain ‘at risk’ groups and vaccinates them for free. These groups are: • Anyone over the age of 65 • Pregnant women • Children and adults with an underlying health condition (particularly long-term heart or respiratory disease) • Children and adults with weakened immune systems If you fall into one of the groups above it would be wise to see your GP or practice nurse in October to book yourself in for your Flu jab. For those of us that do not fit in to the above NHS targeted groups, you can still receive a flu vaccine from myself at the Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe. This is a private service and is on a special offer at only £9.99 for this year. This service will be available from the end of September and does not require an appointment. Simply turn up and be vaccinated in less than 15 minutes. Alternatively if you would like to make an appointment simply call us on 01162387353. So during the next few months if you develop any symptoms of Cold or Flu, make your first port of call the Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe, where our highly trained Pharmacists will help you to treat your condition, and if needed refer you to your GP appropriately. If you would like any information about anything mentioned above please call in to the Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe or call us on 01162387353 Your Local Pharmacist Irfan Kassam MPharm (GphC) MRPharmS

CLA urges the public to ‘stop using dangerous sky lanterns’ The CLA (Country Land & Business Association) has responded to the newly announced code of practice for sky lanterns by calling on the public to refrain from using them.
FILMREVIEW Let’s be cops
For two struggling thirty-something mates, life it pretty hum-drum, until they’re invited to a fancy dress party that unexpectedly changes everything. Choosing to dress as the boys in blue for the occasion, the friends find that life as a pretend cop is pretty good.
The organisation said while the code of practice is a step in the right direction, the only way to completely reduce the many dangers posed by sky lanterns is for the public to cease using them. CLA President Henry Robinson said: “We have campaigned for many years on the dangers posed by sky lanterns and while the new code of practice will go some way in controlling their use, they remain a serious fire hazard.
Instantly becoming a hit in their own neighbourhood, these fake cop duo continue to wear their costumes, and brandish their fake badges whenever the opportunity arises. But when real trouble comes knocking, the two get entangled in the real life criminal underworld of dirty detectives and the mob.
“These flying bonfires endanger the lives of grazing livestock while their burnt out remains are hazardous to wildlife and create unnecessary litter.
Can these two wannabe cops become real heroes, or will they regret ever brandishing their fake badges around their neighbourhood?
“We urge the public to think twice about the implications of releasing a naked flame with no control over where it will land. Without an outright ban, it is up to the public to do the right thing and stop using dangerous sky lanterns.”
Want to stay ten years fitter than someone else your own age? GET A DOG. Dog owners over the age of 65 have the same fitness levels as someone a decade younger. In fact, some researchers suggest that public health officials should even introduce ‘dog loaning’ schemes, to enable more people tobenefit from having a pet. Not only do dog owners achieve exercise levels the same as those people 10 years younger, dog owners also have significantly lower levels of anxiety and depression. Blood pressure and heart rate are, on average, lower. As a senior lecturer at the School of Geography and Geosciences explained, “Dog ownership may motivate personal activity and enable older people to overcome many potential barriers such as lack of social support, inclement weather and concerns over personal safety.”
Million Dollar Arm Life could be better for sports agent JB Bernstein. His career seems to be waning somewhat, and so he decides to travel to India to make his own luck. Teaming up with a rather grouchy retired talent scout Ray Poitevint, the two embark on a hunt to find the next major sports star in the world of competitive cricket. After setting up a national contest called ‘The Million Dollar Arm’, interest goes through the roof, and they hand pick two talented 18 year olds, who each have a sharp eye and a mean throw. Plucked from obscurity, and away from their rural Indian villages, Rinku and Dinesh soon find themselves training in Los Angeles, where life couldn’t be more different. As the two become homesick and struggle to adjust, the increasing pressure heaped upon them begins to take its toll. As JB begins to form close friendships with his new protégé’s, his friend Brenda forces him to question his motives, and the importance of family and friends over career. Based on a true story, this biographical drama has got more than its fair share of comic moments, and is brought to you by Walt Disney Pictures.

Not On the high street Everybody loves a bargain especially mums and mums to be. For years it has been one of the long term projects on the back burner for local Leicestershire charity ADAPT Prembabies to have a Shop dedicated solely to selling new and nearly new baby equipment and items. They have been very fortunate that with the help of Greenacres in Birstall now have a small (and it is small) unit on a three month trial to see if this is a viable project for them. ADAPT really does appreciate all the help and support from Greenacres and they’ve got some amazing items for sale. ADAPT Prembabies (Reg Charity No 1138777) supports parents and families of premature and poorly babies. There is no disputing the fact that in Leicestershire the babies get the very best clinical care but for the parents it’s sometimes a different story. Coping with the hourly stress and emotional trauma of having a poorly baby is heartbreaking - this is where the ADAPT Family Support Workers step in. Sometimes all they are is a friendly face, or to give a hug when one is needed. Someone to sit down with and help parents understand that whatever is going on or whenever help is needed ADAPT are there for them. When it’s time for babies to go home the support just doesn’t stop, ADAPT runs a number of parents groups called In-B-Tweenies. All the babies started their life in special care, being given oxygen or having feeding tubes so these groups give parents the chance to meet with other parents who have been through the same or similar experiences, again sharing the good days and bad days. ADAPT Prembabies is completely self funding so having this new “Shop” is really helping to raise the much needed money for ADAPT to be able to continue. This is a really huge project for us, and we hope you will all pop by to say hello and pick up a bargain or two!

A man goes to the doctor and says: Doctor, wherever I touch, it hurts. What do you mean? The Doctor asks Him: When I touch my shoulder, it really hurts. If I touch my knee OUCH! When I touch my forehead, it really, really hurts. I got to know what’s wrong with you - you’ve broken your finger! Doctor replies.
