ROTHLEY PARK G.C. RAISES £10,500 FOR PARKINSON’S UK
With escalating heating costs in the winter and with glass/polycarbonate roofs acting as green houses during the summer, is it time to re evaluate your conservatory in line with modern requirements.
At the start of every year Rothley Park Golf Club’s elected captains announce their chosen Captains’ Charities. Last year’s captains, Ian Agar and Viv Holland, made the decision to both raise money for the same charity, Parkinson’s UK.
Charnwood conservatories specialise in the remodelling of existing conservatories. We start by removing the existing roof covering and running in new structural elements to the roof where necessary.
The ladies and gents sections organised a wide variety of fund raising opportunities both on and off the course. The ladies raised over £1,000 at a Christmas Fayre whilst the gents raised in excess of £2,000 at Ian’s Captains’ Day. Both Captains also held a joint Captains’ Charity Event which raised in excess of £1,500.
proof & breathable membrane to eliminate condensation, and insulate the roof with Kingspan rigid foam between the rafters and Super Tri-Iso multi foil below, to give an over all heat loss compliant with the high levels required by current building regulations.
The charity was a popular choice with the membership as many have first hand experience of family and friends with this debilitating condition, including the gents captain whose father-in-law has been diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease. Ian says: “It has been a great honour to raise this amount of money for Parkinson’s UK who are providing tremendous support to people who suffer from this disease. The members of Rothley Golf Club have been fantastic with their support throughout the year”.

Or perhaps... If you really want to give your conservatory a more timeless quality,
Darren Worthy, the Regional Fundraising Manager for Parkinsons UK, visited Rothley Park Golf Club in February and was delighted to receive a cheque for £10,500. He thanked Rothley Park and said the contribution will play an important part in the support of patients and future research into the disease.

To Thank Leicestershires Unsung Heroes The Chairman of the Leicestershire County Council, Mr Bill Boulter hosted a dinner to thank the Unsung Heroes of Leicestershire for giving up their time and talents to help others. As Mayor of Charnwood I was asked to nominated three worthy volunteers and each were invited, together with a guest, to the dinner. My nominations were John Dowling from our own village of Anstey who has worked for a long period of time as Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator. He also works alongside the British Legion raising money at local events and helps organise Remembrance Sunday in the village. My other two nominations were Jan Sutton who is Deacon in the Loughborough Methodist Circuit. Jan has worked tirelessly as a Street Pastor in Loughborogh going out on Friday and Saturday nights through into the early hours of the morning. Jan’s vision has facilitated the training and induction of 26 Street Pastors to date. The other nomination was Ken Carson who joined the British Legion in1987 and has been the Remembrance Sunday Parade organiser in Loughborough for sixteen years. With his guidance, dedication and attention to detail the parade has grown to become one of the largest in the Midlands. Pauline and I had a really nice evening with our Unsung Heros. Thank you all for your tireless involvement in the community, you truly are UNSUNG HEROS. John, Jan and Ken all received a glass paperweight to commemorate the event.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Rothley & Mountsorrel areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get
from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Soar Valley Bowls Club Mountsorrel awarded £42,090 of funding from Sport England Soar Valley Bowls Club is among 148 local sports projects to secure a share of £10 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund. Since 2011, Inspired Facilities has been helping to breathe new life into tired community sports facilities and converting existing buildings into venues suitable for grassroots sport. Soar Valley will receive £42,090 of National Lottery funding to replace its Bowling Green wooden ditch channels, which are life expired, replacing them with new concrete ditch channels covered on their front faces with Astroturf, and at the same time install an irrigation system to enable watering of the green replacing a manual system. The project would also see a new slab surface installed on the four surrounding sides of the Bowling Green. Sport England Property Director, Charles Johnston, said: “The Inspired Facilities Fund has had a huge impact on grassroots sport across the country. Since 2011, we’ve invested £94 million into more than 1,800 projects to improve and refurbish sports clubs and transform non-sporting venues into vibrant community sports clubs. “It’s great to see Soar Valley Bowls club join the long list of successful clubs to benefit from this fund.” Club Chairman, David Burns, said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment, for the improvement of our facilities; it provides a boost for the local community, the sport it enjoys, and will help provide a long term future built upon modern facilities, bringing benefit to all present and future members.” Many more communities are set to benefit from the hugely popular fund with the latest round of the Inspired Facilities now open. Community and voluntary organisations, councils and schools can bid for a share of £20 million to help upgrade facilities that can be unattractive, expensive to run and difficult to maintain, and to convert existing non-sporting buildings into venues that are suitable for grassroots sport. Applying for funding has never been easier. Based on feedback from previous applicants, the Inspired Facilities Fund is now an open programme which means projects can submit applications as soon as they are ready rather than being restricted by a specific deadline. To find out more and bid, visit www.sportengland.org/inspiredfacilities.

The White Horse's Annual Duck Race Joins Birstall’s Two Primary Schools Together It's nearing that time of year once again. There are hundreds of events and happenings which are completely synonymous with Spring; new-born lambs, soil-quenching April showers and the warmth of Easter. Another - certainly around these parts - is the White Horse's annual charity Duck Race which this year will be held on Bank Holiday Monday, May 4th. This year, if you're still yet to hear, all proceeds will be donated to the Parent Teacher Associations of Riverside and Highcliffe Primary Schools respectively. So far, since the inaugural Duck Race in 2009, around £20k has been raised for local charities and community organisations. Both schools' PTA's will jointly run all stalls, games and activities that take place throughout the day, and they will equally share the money raised. These organisations are responsible for raising much needed additional funds for equipment and activities for the children of Riverside and Highcliffe to take advantage of on a daily basis.
The level of interest that this has already accrued in and around Birstall ensures that there will be a bigger and better variety of stalls and games than ever before. Leicester Tigers will once again be reprising their role by providing rugby-related challenges for the budding egg-chaser. The bouncy castle will once again take pride of place in the White Horse's garden, accompanied by games and challenges such as 'Splat the Rat', 'Donkey Derby' and the ever popular football 'keepy-uppy' game, amongst others. And the usual mix of craft and traditional fete stalls are set to complete the attractions; these always provide a perfect gift opportunity.
The usual refreshment selection will of course be provided by the White Horse, with the bar opening at midday and a large barbecue in operation throughout the afternoon. There will be more detailed information in the local press in the coming months, so watch this space! And ducks will be available to purchase from the White Horse and both respective schools from the 1st April 2015 onwards.
The day will come to a heady climax in the afternoon when the main attraction - the race itself - will kick off at the bottom of White Horse Lane on the River Soar. Furthermore, rumour has it that someone special from the Frozen town of Arandelle will be in attendance to start the race, but hopefully the weather on the day will be slightly better than what they're used to.
Birstall Gala 2015
Saturday 27 June & Sunday 28 June This year’s Gala will be held over the weekend of 27th & 28th June, and once again, by popular demand, we will be accepting bookings for stalls for both the Saturday and Sunday, in fact bookings are already being taken. In previous years we have had over 70 private and charity stalls on each day, and so if you or your organisation would like to have a stall, stand or some space to promote your business, or charity please contact the Parish Council offices for the appropriate forms and any further information you may require by telephoning: 0116 267 6191 or you can contact us by email: admin@birstllpc.org.uk. Or you can download the forms from our website: http://birstall.leicestershireparishcouncils.org/ We have quite a few new and exciting bands performing on the Saturday and we will be promoting the timetable over the next few months. There will also be a WW1 commemoration ‘sing-a-long’ from the Ashby Big Band on the Sunday afternoon, before the ever popular ‘Proms in the Park’ event on the Sunday evening which as always will be followed by a spectacular Firework finale.
Look out for the posters in the very near future. 8

Valentine Competition Winning Letter Last month we ran a competition to win an overnight stay, dinner and breakfast on Valentines Day at the Fieldhead Hotel, Hotel in Markfield. Below is the letter that won the competition for Chelsie and Max. We hope you had a great time. “Hello my name is Chelsie Hampson and I am 22 years old. I would love to win this amazing prize for my fiancé Max Cross who is 24 years old. For the past 6 years Max has been in the armed forces and served in Afghanistan for 6 months in 2013. Max is the most kind, caring person I have ever met, putting me first and making me feel like a princess all the time. He is my world and I love him with all of my heart. Unfortunately because he is based so far away in Tidworth we only get to spend weekends together, sometimes only every other weekend. On Christmas day Max gave me the surprise of my life, he took me for a walk to Swithland Reservoir where he got down and proposed to me in front of other members of the public. I happily said yes which lead Max into shouting ‘SHE SAID YES’ and everyone applauded. This was the happiest day of my life.
THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY
On the 9th March, we were pleased to invite Mr. Christopher Tarratt of Tarratts Jewellers in Market Street, Leicester. Mr. Tarratt’s talk was illustrated by the use a computerised film demonstrating various beautiful artefacts which have been made since the commencement of the business started by his grandfather Mr. George Tarratt in 1913. At that time the company earned the reputation as a recognised supplier of unique quality silverware. Silver items are not so popular these days, but still in demand for commemorative and prestigious Trophies presented at various sporting events around the country. George’s son, Ivan, joined the firm in 1936 after training at Wilson & Gill of London and took the firm on from the Art Deco era when the business moved along Market Street in 1967. He expanded its jewellery ranges and Watch lines. These included Patak Phillips, Rolex, Omega, Cartier and others. Inevitably the success resulted in a move in 2006 to the fabulous new showroom at 23-25 Market Street. We were delighted to view the interior and Christopher guided us round illustrating the comfortable atmosphere, sympathetic and knowledgeable salesmanship offered by the assistants. It was also very interesting to witness the work carried out in the creation of fine Jewellery etc. at the back of the Shop. Each day the fine dust from the workings of silver, gold and
platinum is hooved up and subjected to differing temperatures to melt down the materials, the loss of which would amount to hundreds of pounds. Christopher is the third generation partner, and the future looks very exciting with new collections, new partnerships and new initiatives moving the business forward. This was our first Meeting whereby gentlemen were invited to attend and judging from the response they appeared to have enjoyed themselves. Helped, no doubt, by the specially supplied cakes brought along by Mesdames Jenny Kennington, Gill Jefferson and Diane Rouse in celebration of their Birthdays in February. Our next Meeting will be on 13th April which will be a talk in recognition of the Centenary of the “Ladybird” Books. Do come and join us; I don’t know anyone who did not grow up with a Ladybird Book in their hands! Our Meetings take place at 2.15pm at the Cropston Evangelical Chapel, Station Road, Cropston, LE7 7HP on the 2nd Monday of every month. Plenty of parking spaces available. To find out more about The Monday Club, please ring me on 0116 2363467. I have an ansophone, so if I am not available, please leave a message and telephone number and I will return your call.

Because he is away so much we have never spent Valentine’s Day together. So I would dearly love to win this prize so I could surprise him like he surprised me and make this a special day for him, like he made Christmas Day a special day for me”.

Have your say on proposals for county waste sites
Divergent Series: Insurgent
RESIDENTS, charities and businesses can help shape the county council’s proposals to save £1.1 million at household waste and recycling sites.
In a dystopian Chicago, Tris and Four are fugitives running from the leader and commanding power of the dominant Erudite elite. As unrest lies amongst the factions all around her, Trist must find allies to help her in her quest to save the ones she loves, and solve the mystery behind Erudite’s uprising.
The council wants to hear people’s views on a variety of proposals to reduce costs, without having to close sites completely. Blake Pain, county cabinet member for waste, said: “The council needs to save £1.1 million from its household waste and recycling sites budget, as part of its overall £120 million savings.
As war looms and tensions between the factions rise, it’s a race against time for Tris to find out once and for all what her family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the rulers of the Erudite faction will stop at nothing to hide the truth. Plagued by memories from her past, Tris and her comrade Four must battle forth seeking the truth about both their past and their future.
“We have a range of ideas and we now want to hear people’s views on how they could work.”
The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water
• Restricting free disposal of non-household waste such as bricks, rubble and other DIY waste
Proposals for waste sites include: • Restricting free use of the sites by those living outside of Leicestershire county • Restricting free access to use of the sites by charities, parish councils and other groups
• Reducing site opening times At the moment, the council spends £27.4 million per year on waste and recycling and it needs to reduce that figure by £4.9 million by 2018/19. Alongside proposed changes to household waste and recycling sites, the council is also reviewing recycling and reuse credits. Around £120,000 is paid each year to approximately 40 charity and community groups that collect household waste for reuse and recycling.
Mischievous pirate, Burger-Beard, has a magical book, and anything he writes in it comes true. Of course, he writes the most evil schemes imaginable, but soon discovers that the last page is missing, and only when he finds it will his plans come to life. The page must stay hidden for the sake of the world, and it is currently in the safe hands of everyone’s favourite absorbent, yellow and porous friend: SpongeBob SquarePants. When the page ends up in the hands of Burger-Beard, SpongeBob and the gang must venture out of the water and into the human world to reclaim it. Wandering around in the big wide world, they come across a host of difficulties, and they soon realise that this might all be much harder than they thought. Can SpongeBob retrieve this magic page before it is too late? Join SpongeBob and friends on their magical journey out of the water as they try to outsmart Burger-Beard, played by Antonio Banderas. Directed by Paul Tibbitt and Mike Mitchell, this is a real treat for fans of any age.
Charities and community groups will be directly engaged with to shape proposals to ensure they are supported in the most effective way. Options for making savings could include only paying credits for materials where other recycling or reuse facilities are not available - e.g. mattresses or carpet. The consultation will run from February 2 to April 26. You can have your say at www.leics.gov.uk/ haveyoursay/futurewastemanagement The council’s cabinet will consider the results of the consultation and decide on which proposals to take forward later this year. For details of the sites and what you can recycle there, please see www.leics.gov.uk/recycling _household_waste_sites

Much Admired Local “Old Soldier” and Gentleman Dies in his 99th year. At 8.30 am on Thursday 26th February, 2014, John Sheppard DCM, a much loved local “Old Soldier”,passed away after a short illness. John was born on August 6th 1915, during the first World War. He served in the Second World War and, for his conduct while engaging the German army as a Mortar Platoon Commander with the1/5th Leicesters, at Tretten, Norway, on 23 April,1940, he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
