Inspire Awards in memory of Joe are already making a difference A GRANTS scheme set up in memory of a Rothley teenager has awarded its first grant – to a young international triathlete. Eighteen-yearold James Teagle, from Birstall, is competing in triathlon at an international level, taking part in European Junior Cup races across Europe. He has to fund all of his travel, equipment costs and race fees himself, so decided to apply for a small grant from the Inspire Awards to help meet these costs. James said: “I’m really glad I applied for an Inspire Award. They gave me a grant of £235 and I used the money to help me compete in the Geneva European Junior Cup where, despite my goggles snapping in the swim, I had my best European cup result yet, finishing 11th. I am hoping to build on this next year, in what will be my final year as a junior. “I’m absolutely passionate about triathlon and I’d like to thank the Trust as this money has helped me to compete abroad, gain valuable experience of international racing and continue to build my career as an athlete.” James’s recent fantastic achievements in triathlon include a third place at Blenheim Triathlon, second in the London Aquathlon and leading the rankings in the British Junior Superseries. He was in action in Canada last weekend (30/31 Aug) at the junior elite world championships, coming 22nd in an impressive international debut. “I’ll aim for top ten next year!” he said. Launched in June, the Inspire Awards offer small grants and/or specialist support to city and county young people aged 13-19, to help them develop their talents. The awards are a new venture from the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT), a local charity set up in memory of Joe Humphries, who died, aged 14, while out jogging near his home in October 2012. Joe was a victim of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) – a group of lethal heart diseases which can cause sudden cardiac death in young people. Through the Inspire Awards, JHMT aims to help local young people fulfil their potential in a way that Joe was tragically never able to. Simon Taylor is a partner at local solicitors Gateley, who have helped raise funds for the Inspire Awards. Simon is on the judging panel, and said: “We were all tremendously impressed by James’s story. There are so many young people out there who are achieving amazing things and taking part in a whole range of hugely positive activities, so we want to make sure these young people get their voices heard and get the help they so richly deserve. The awards have the right name because it truly is inspiring to see what these young people can achieve when they are offered the right support.” Grants of up to £500 are available for young people who live in Leicester or Leicestershire and are either training for a competition in a significant sporting activity that is recognised by the Trust, or pursuing a project to benefit their local community. Applications will also be considered from young artists or musicians looking to develop their talents. The Trust will also encourage the sharing of knowledge and practical experience, helping young entrepreneurs to develop their ideas. In these cases, rather than a financial reward, young people will benefit from mentoring, contacts and specialist advice. School on the Move Rothley’s Church of England Primary School is about to decamp from its Mountsorrel Lane site to a brand new building on the old Brookfield Farm, off Hallfields Lane. The expected move will take place towards the end of the present Autumn Term. The existing school will be demolished and the site given over to housing. To mark this momentous change the School is mounting a special exhibition in the existing School. One time pupils and today’s parents will be able to wander through the building and soak up the atmosphere, for the last time before the closure. This Exhibition over four sessions is a special opportunity to discover the phases of construction of the present school from 1902 to 2009. A story told in plans, pictures, memories and wonderful project work by the children. Admission is free, come on any of the four sessions; Saturday 11th October, 3-6pm. Or between 6-8pm on Monday 13th October, Tuesday 14th October, Wednesday 15th October. For more information contact Jackie Warner at the School, 0116 230 2106.

New look Café is a big hit at the Mountsorrel Revival Thanks to the National Citizenship Service the Sorrel Youth Café has had a major facelift. Ten young people, volunteering through the NCS, worked with young people from the Café to raise the funds and decorate its interior. Budgens, Mountsorrel provided the group with an opportunity to raise over £250 with a sponsored cycle. This covered the cost of the paint and materials. Jessica Pavey, NCS Project Co-ordinator, told us: It’s great to have opportunities like this and we thank the Café for letting us take on the job. The young people involved have told us that they feel they have made a real difference. What’s more the Café looks great! The timing of Café revamp helped it prepare for the Mountsorrel Revival when it was given a back in time theme with a 1940’s front room (furniture and prop’s courtesy of Vinspiration) a 1950’s style Ice Cream Parlour. Youth Officer Graham Lloyd told us: Despite the bad weather all our hard work paid off. The café looked great and we were able to welcome Revival visitors to come in out of the rain for tea, cake or a boxed lunch. Thanks to the NCS and Budgens for their support. The Café has been a great supporter of the Revival and saw it as a great opportunity to demonstrate what the Café is doing. Young people and volunteers dressed up and visitors could have their photo taken, enjoy a specialist ice cream or fresh strawberries donated by the Co-op, Mountsorrel - thanks to them. Graham said: A big thanks has to go to Ian Shonk for his inspiration and hard work. He battled through the setbacks and when the sun finally came out I hope he felt it was all worth it. We are looking forward to next year’s event. The Café is due to start it’s autumn programme in September and is looking for new volunteers who want to work with young people. Anyone interested in finding out more about the Café and/or volunteering should contact Graham on 07775 616001 or email glloyd@sycafe.org

Calling all Bakers The White Horse Bake Off needs you! Are you famed for your tarte tatin? Do you know the trick to making a mean flan? Or do you just enjoy a bit of a bake? If the answer to any of these questions is 'yes', then please enter this year's Great Birstall Bake Off. The brainchild of Rebecca Kay and based around the concept of the hit BBC TV series, last year the event raised over £600 for Macmillan Cancer Support and served up some seriously sumptuous delights in the process. Rebecca Kay went on to say that she was "thrilled with the response to the Bake off last year" and it was "great fun". As with all competitions and especially those with a charitable emphasis, the more entries received means more money raised. So whether you're a complete novice or consider yourself to be the next Mary Berry - get baking! And there is a category to suit all tastes and palates, young or old; Cupcakes, Cake, Bread, Sweet Bake, Savoury Bake, Biscuit, Best Decorated and Best Junior Entry will all feature. But if sweets aren't your thing - fear not! The organisers are trying to encourage more entries into the 'Savoury Bake' category. Pizzas, pasties, quiches, sausage rolls and bread are all potential entries into this category, although the list does not end there by any means and more exotic ideas are encouraged. Mr. Allen from Allen's Family Bakers has offered to provide yeast to those who might like to bake some bread. The Bake Off will be judged on Saturday 27th September by a judging panel including some of last year’s winners; Mr and Mrs Allen from Allen’s family Bakers, Maxilyn Geary from the Birstall WI and Rob Mackay (Chef at the White Horse, Birstall). They will follow WI guidelines for appearance, texture and flavour. All entries will then be sold off the following day at the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, which raises funds to support people with cancer. The coffee morning will start at 11am on Sunday 28th September at the White Horse, Birstall. Charlotte Foy of the White Horse added “What better way to support a cause, please drop in and enjoy a piece of cake – or two!” The winners will be announced at the coffee morning and each will receive a prize and a rosette. Applications can be obtained from Allen’s Family Bakers, the White Horse and in various places where you see the poster, as well as from the White Horse website. Application closing date is Wednesday 24th September. For more information. Visit www.thewhitehorsebirstall.co.uk or call 0116 2671038

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Rothley & Mountsorrel areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get
from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE! I started karate over 20 years ago because I wanted to have more self confidence and to be able to defend myself if need be. It has become a passion for me now and I love all aspects of teaching and training alike. My GinnyB Karate Club is now thriving with students aged between 6 and 56 of all levels and abilities. Over the years I have seen students start as shy, unconfident people who have gradually developed into strong, outgoing individuals with a newfound self belief. Children as young as 10 and 11 have committed themselves and worked really hard to attain their black belts which is a remarkable achievement! Adults too have come along learnt a new skill, improving their self confidence and fitness whilst gaining many new friends.
There are opportunities for people to take part in competitions and workshops and charity events. We recently did a non-stop 12 hour karate marathon raising over £3500 for Loros Hospice. I really believe karate is a great all round sport promoting fitness, self discipline, respect and confidence and the beauty of it is that it's accessible to all ages, shapes and sizes!!
MP WELCOMES NEW SUPPORT FOR CRIME VICTIMS David Tredinnick, Member of Parliament for Bosworth, has welcomed proposals set out by Sir Clive Loader, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicestershire, aimed at improving support to local victims of crime. In July 2012, the Ministry of Justice set out proposals focused on increasing support services to help victims and witnesses cope with the immediate impact of crime and to recover from the harm experienced. As part of the changes, responsibility for commissioning victim-specific support services will now be held locally under Police and Crime Commissioners. In terms of commissioning services for victims and witnesses, Sir Clive Loader’s initiative focuses on the three following areas:
• SERVICE Commissioning an Integrated Victim Service which will track victims ANING of recorded and self-reported crime throughout the criminal justice system. This victim-focused service will provide information, advice,
DON’T REPLACE RESTORE
practical support and access to ‘cope and recover’ services according to crime type and victim vulnerability/need. • Providing funds to protect and provide the provision of a minimum standard of support, regardless of place of residence within Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland • Commissioning a practical support/target hardening service for those assessed as vulnerable and/or at high risk of repeat victimisation. David Tredinnick said, “I welcome the efforts for improved focus on the victims of crime and their specific needs as it is vital that they are given all possible support during their interaction with the criminal justice system. Locally introduced and monitored measures for adopting a more understanding approach to the likely problems and stress experienced by crime victims and witnesses is crucial to ensuring their needs are fully addressed and supported.”

Not On the high street Everybody loves a bargain especially mums and mums to be. For years it has been one of the long term projects on the back burner for local Leicestershire charity ADAPT Prembabies to have a Shop dedicated solely to selling new and nearly new baby equipment and items. They have been very fortunate that with the help of Greenacres in Birstall now have a small (and it is small) unit on a three month trial to see if this is a viable project for them. ADAPT really does appreciate all the help and support from Greenacres and they’ve got some amazing items for sale. ADAPT Prembabies (Reg Charity No 1138777) supports parents and families of premature and poorly babies. There is no disputing the fact that in Leicestershire the babies get the very best clinical care but for the parents it’s sometimes a different story. Coping with the hourly stress and emotional trauma of having a poorly baby is heartbreaking - this is where the ADAPT Family Support Workers step in. Sometimes all they are is a friendly face, or to give a hug when one is needed. Someone to sit down with and help parents understand that whatever is going on or whenever help is needed ADAPT are there for them. When it’s time for babies to go home the support just doesn’t stop, ADAPT runs a number of parents groups called In-B-Tweenies. All the babies started their life in special care, being given oxygen or having feeding tubes so these groups give parents the chance to meet with other parents who have been through the same or similar experiences, again sharing the good days and bad days. ADAPT Prembabies is completely self funding so having this new “Shop” is really helping to raise the much needed money for ADAPT to be able to continue. This is a really huge project for us, and we hope you will all pop by to say hello and pick up a bargain or two!

Apply online for secondary school places Parents are urged to look out for the school place application packs for children who transfer to secondary school in the autumn term 2015 that will be landing on their doormats over the next couple of weeks. Remember that moving to the next school is not automatic and parents need to apply for a place before the 31st October 2014 closing date. The transfer process is the same for all community, voluntary controlled, voluntary aided, academy, foundation, trust, faith, free or studio schools. If parents apply late - even if they live next door to the school - their child is unlikely to get a place. You can apply online at www.leics.gov.uk/admissions. Nature’s Drama
‘Bespoke Gifts and Unique Crafts in Support of Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation’
The incredible story of the River Trent is soon to come to life on the stage, thanks to a partnership between RSPB’s newest wetland nature reserve Beckingham Marshes, local youth group PACS, and amateur dramatics society Kismet. Supported by generous funds of £399,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), Marshsongs, a moving celebration of theatre, music, dance, poetry and visual arts, is the result of a unique collaboration between local drama groups and a wetland creation project along the River Trent. Michael Copleston, Site Manager for RSPB Beckingham Marshes says: “The performance is a phenomenal piece of work that vibrantly tells the story of the River Trent through the ages from Viking settlements, willow weaving industry up to the present day with a running theme of how the wildlife of the landscape ebbs and flows with human influence.”
THE SHUTTLEWOOD Clarke Foundation will be hosting their annual craft fair on Saturday 4th October. Stalls will include handmade jewellery, fabric crafts, watercolours, cards and much more!
The first two performances will be held on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 September at 7:30pm in Beckingham Village Hall. The final performances will be held on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 September at 7:30pm in Gainsborough Old Hall. Local groups PACS and Kismet are based in the Gainsborough area, the performance tells the story of the mighty river Trent and how the culture and heritage of the local community has transformed alongside a dramatically changing landscape for wildlife.
Alan Norman Chief Executive of the Foundation said ‘Come along and browse the individual craft stalls at the Copt Oak Memorial Hall. A variety of stalls will be presenting a selection of interesting, unique handcrafted items. An ideal opportunity to purchase a bespoke gift or treat yourself to something special.’ He added ‘The Foundation’s craft fair will help to raise much needed funds, enabling us to continue and expand the services that we have to offer.’
Michael adds: “Its been an absolute joy to witness our local drama groups out on the reserve experiencing and drawing inspiration from the wildlife of the marshes, from brown hares boxing, lapwing tumbling in the vast skies to dragonflies flitting over the wetland areas. Kerry Greenwood from Kismet says: “We've loved being involved in the project. As a company, we have never tackled anything like this before, so it has been a challenge but one we have learned so much from and we are very proud of what we have put together. “Not only that, but members of Kismet have become fascinated by the work of the RSPB, some of us have even joined as members which has been a real pleasure. We are certain we have developed a production with wide appeal which truly reflects a community response to the Beckingham Marshes wetland project and which will be full of surprises, so we hope very much people will come along and experience what we have created!”
The Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation’s Craft Fair will take place on Saturday 4th October from 11.00 am – 3.00pm at Copt Oak Memorial Hall, Whitwick Road, Copt Oak, Leicestershire, LE67 9QB
Michael Copleston says: “Please come along and support this one-off local event, we would all love to see the show reach as many people as possible.”
Entry is by suggested donation of £1.00 per adult and 50p per child. Refreshments and light lunches will be available at Ulverscroft Grange Tearooms, Whitwick Road, Ulverscroft between 10.00am and 4.00pm providing an opportunity to enjoy the view across the Charnwood Forest and browse for a bargain in the Foundation’s charity shops.

A night at the races was great fun and raised a very healthy profit for Leicestershire Life Education Centres. Leicestershire Life Education Centres run mobile classrooms that attend schools in the Leicestershire and Rutland area delivering exciting interactive activities, learning about health education. Health education (Obesity, drinking/binge drinking, smoking and drug prevention are some of the issues they address) to children aged 4 – 11. The event was held at Swithland Village Hall in conjunction with Rotary Club of Wreake Valley. The races were generously sponsored and the main sponsor of the evening was TaxAssist Accountants (Loughborough) Ltd from Shepshed. The crowd cheered on the races which were a mixture of flat and over hurdles and also enjoyed a buffet. The winning owner of each race was presented with a bottle of champagne. The photo shows David Brown chairman of Leicestershire Life Education Centres presenting a bottle to Phil Marriott director of TaxAssist Accountants (Loughborough) Ltd whose horse won a race, accompanied by puppet Harold. Leicestershire Life Education Centres have set themselves a challenge of £20,000 for 20 years. The £573 raised on the night will go towards this target which will allow more children to benefit from this excellent service. We would like to thank Soar Valley Race Nights and our sponsors TaxAssist Accountants, Squire Alarms, L & G Trigger, A & S Tooling Ltd, Swithland Spring Water, Numark Pharmacy (Shepshed), Somerby Accountants and Shire Surveyors for helping to make the event a success. Our next event towards our target is a Fashion Show on 20 November 2014 at Birstall Village Hall at 7.00pm. For tickets please contact 0116 236 3441.
THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY
Monday, 8th September proved to be one of those joyously brilliant sunny days we sometimes get in this month of the year, which helped Members to come along for our 11th Harvest Bring and Buy. The Harvest table was ably filled with assorted vegetables, salads, fruit, apples galore, homemade jams and marmalades, tinned soups and tempting cakes. All the produce was purchased, resulting in a very satisfying sum of £87 Following the Sales Table, a very informative talk was given by Mrs Sue Foreman on her work with the “Phoenix Trading Company” making, demonstrating and selling Cards to all kinds of groups. Sue decided to join this Company to aid fund-raising for the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust. Sue and her family were friends of the Humphries family and she wanted to give her support.
from his home. Several local people went to his aid but to no avail, as Joe had died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, SAD. The Memorial Trust was set up by Joe’s father Steve Humphries, who was previously a Leicester City Goalkeeper, in Memory of his Son to raise awareness and support for other children with this condition. Currently the Trust is working with The East Midlands Ambulance Service to promote life-saving Courses. We were pleased to hear that Sue was able to fundraise £50 from the sale of her cards to our Members. With our customary refreshments, in celebration of Birthdays for Sue Wakerley and Maja Tompkins ,we enjoyed luscious cakes and a large tin of Chocolates.
Our next meeting will be on October 13th, when we shall welcome Mrs. Jackie Partner giving a talk on “Bits and Pieces”. This will be very Joe Humphries was 14 and was a very fit 6’3” enjoyable. CLA urges the public to ‘stop using dangerous sky lanterns’ The CLA (Country Land & Business Association) has responded to the newly announced code of practice for sky lanterns by calling on the public to refrain from using them. The organisation said while the code of practice is a step in the right direction, the only way to completely reduce the many dangers posed by sky lanterns is for the public to cease using them. CLA President Henry Robinson said: “We have campaigned for many years on the dangers posed by sky lanterns and while the new code of practice will go some way in controlling their use, they remain a serious fire hazard. “These flying bonfires endanger the lives of grazing livestock while their burnt out remains are hazardous to wildlife and create unnecessary litter. “We urge the public to think twice about the implications of releasing a naked flame with no control over where it will land. Without an outright ban, it is up to the public to do the right thing and stop using dangerous sky lanterns.”
Want to stay ten years fitter than someone else your own age? GET A DOG. Dog owners over the age of 65 have the same fitness levels as someone a decade younger. In fact, some researchers suggest that public health officials should even introduce ‘dog loaning’ schemes, to enable more people tobenefit from having a pet. Not only do dog owners achieve exercise levels the same as those people 10 years younger, dog owners also have significantly lower levels of anxiety and depression. Blood pressure and heart rate are, on average, lower. As a senior lecturer at the School of Geography and Geosciences explained, “Dog ownership may motivate personal activity and enable older people to overcome many potential barriers such as lack of social support, inclement weather and concerns over personal safety.”
FILMREVIEW Pride
It’s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decide to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support. However, in an act of charity they decide to bypass the Union and go direct to the miners, identifying a small mining village in Wales and journeying to make their donation in person. In an extraordinary story of two seemingly alien yet open-minded communities, they form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership.
A Most Wanted Man Issa Karpov is a half-Chechen, halfRussian refugee has escaped from near-death into the Islamic community of Hamburg, in dire need of help and in search of his late-father’s contraband fortune. However, as his story unravels, it’s unclear whether he is simply a man in need of safety, or someone much more sinister. Embroiled in the events are an immigration lawyer, who is determined to provide defence for those without support, and the banker who was part of the illegal production of the immigrants fortune. And all of them are being monitored constantly by the chief of a German spy unit, determined to solve the mystery before time runs out.

Over the last year people have said to us that they would value a Café in this part of the village. We have therefore looked at how an open Café would fit with our charitable objectives and help the Café to survive the next few years. The café offers a good menu for breakfast and lunch and will be staffed by a qualified Chef, volunteers and young people. As a Community Café it offers a place for people to meet and the income generated will support the youth work. In its first few weeks the new opening times proved a great success. The Café’s Chef Jo Wiseman told us: “We have had a great response and have been pleased to see so many people trying out the new menu. We are keen to recruit new volunteers to help us run the sessions so if people are interested they should just pop in.' Anyone interested in finding out more about the Café and/or volunteering should contact Graham on 07775 616001 or email glloyd@sycafe.org

One of the main ideas behind the move is to make better use of the Café at times when young people don’t use it. However the Charity also needs to generate income and wants to provide training opportunities for young people. Recent restrictions in national and local funding mean that the Cafes future is still under threat and it needs to look at new ways of bringing in sustainable income to secure the future.
