“Swifts to Saddlers” Anstey Swifts are proud to announce that yet another one of their home grown talents is set to take on the professional stage with Walsall Football Club. Callum Cockerill-Mollett is due to leave his current set up with the Swifts after playing his football with us for all his junior footballing career. Callum has been with our team as club captain leading his side to more trophies than “Manchester United”. We have always known that he would be given the opportunity to play at a higher level, and we also know that he has been the envy of other local teams as his talent, with the help of his team mates has helped Anstey Swifts become one of the best teams in the country. Ironically Callum netted in his final game on Sunday May 18th to help his team secure a league cup final victory against Barrow. It was a fitting way for Callum to complete his Swifts campaign. I know i speak for all connected within our set up at the Swifts that we are very proud that we have had a very loyal player at our club, and we all wish him well on his deserved opportunity into the professional game, im sure we will see him visiting his old team mates from time to time, but if you do see him around the village wish him well. Good luck Callum!! Gaz Brooks - Anstey Swifts Uners 15’s.

They can be purchased on the day from any of the Open Gardens and in advance. Look out for further details nearer the Open Garden weekend. TWO TREATS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE! The Loughborough Orchestra is sharing the stage with Newtown Linford Mayor Of Charnwood Councillor Paul Day Choral Society for its Summer Concert on June 21 this year. st

As many of you are probably aware, I was appointed the new Mayor of Charnwood on May 13th at a special ceremony held at Loughborough Town Hall. My wife Pauline will be my Mayoress and together we hope to attend many functions across the Borough. Our three children and their partners, six grand children and many dear friends attended the ceremony.

The programme is full of wonderful melodies to please the ear, kindle the imagination and lift the spirit!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not

just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Anstey WI

Anstey WI played Astill Lodge at the Wheatsheaf in Thurcaston in the first round of the Bradgate Group skittles tournament. As usual, Anstey started badly, and improved, too late, in the third leg, and lost. We really should practise more. Everyone had a great deal of fun, though. Members also enjoyed a minibus trip to Richard Golding’s glass studio at Shenton station, where they watched a fascinating demonstration. Richard produces art pieces, with glass made to his own recipe; on this occasion making a jug. He blew a bubble of clear molten glass, coated it in blue powdered glass and patches of white before spraying on silver oxide, all the while blowing, rolling it on a graphite block and using pincers to shape the lip, and putting it in and out of the furnace. The result was a beautiful elegant jug in iridescent blue/green peacock shades. The faces of his audience were a study in concentration. There followed a delicious buffet supper with copious supplies of wine or juice. To cap a wonderful evening, as we left there was a glorious sunset. We were all grateful to late member Mavis Gardner. The sale of items she had kept from the days when the institute had a choir, financed this trip. At the monthly meeting, we discussed the resolution for the NFWI AGM in Leeds next month. This urges members to increase organ donation by joining the NHS donation register and particularly to make their wishes known to their families. We also held our annual competitions, which this year included baking a swiss roll, making a poppy in any art or craft medium, and making a buttonhole/ corsage from fresh flowers. All those present voted for the latter two, and committee members Marian Driver and Wendy Layton judged the baking. It took two tastings before they were able to reach their verdict! Elizabeth Robinson won the baking and flower arranging trophies, while the craft cup went to Chris Figgins. The social part of the meeting was particularly lively as old hands quizzed new member Jenny Downes on her trip to Copenhagen to watch her stepdaughter Molly perform for the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest, and chatted to two young visitors and (we hope) potential members, all the while participating in a topical picture based quiz. At our next meeting on Wednesday June 11th at 7.30pm in the Jubilee Hall on Stadon Road, we shall be trying our hands (or should that be other parts?) at belly dancing. Visitors are always welcome.

Charity Whist Drives

Last night, one of the presenters on Children in Need said, “Pick up your phone and pledge.”

"Charity Whist Drives are held at 7.30 p.m in the Rothley Centre, Mountsorrel Lane,Rothley on the first Thursday of every month. June however this year will be an exception and will be held on the second Thursday. Admission £2.00. All players welcome. Large free car park available".

I’m still sitting here, with the phone in one hand and a can of furniture polish in the other, wondering how that’s supposed to help.

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate. Update on Planning Applications. It was a great disappointment to me to learn that the planning applications for the footpaths between Gynsill Lane and the village of Anstey and the development for housing on Gynsill Lane have been approved. Along with the Parish Council I objected long and hard against these proposals because although the footpaths will be upgraded, I considered that this is not a safe route to the Anstey Latimer School from the new development for children of primary school age, remembering these footpaths are over the floodplain. I still find it hard to accept that a statement was made "in cases of extreme weather parents would have to decide how to get their child to school" this knowing that it has been established there are no other alternative safe routes to school. May I thank all local residents who took the time and effort to object to these two applications, I am sure you are as equally disappointed with the outcome. I notice and did request that the footpath improvements will be carried out before the occupation of the houses on the new Gynsill Lane development. I will now turn my attention to the applications on Cropston Road, Anstey, again I am pleased that so many residents have objected to Charnwood Borough Council. There is no indication yet from the officers at the Borough Council when these two applications will be determined. Going to Leicester at peak time in the morning, I was in traffic from Anstey Nook right through to the other side of Beaumont Leys. In my view the highway is at capacity levels already without extra added traffic from the piecemeal developments we are now seeing coming forward. They are also reducing the size of the Green Wedge and the separation between villages. I will respond again and oppose these developments as, in my view, these will cause further issues on the highway especially when all the recent development in Anstey and the

proposed Ashton Green site along with the Thurcaston proposal are taken into account without any major improvements to mitigate the impact within our villages. School and College Transport. The County Council are asking for views on proposed changes to home to school transport policy for main stream schools, this covers schools and academies but not special schools. During February and March the Council asked for views on proposals to change the existing policy. Just over 2,000 responses were received along with a number of alternative policy suggestions. It was clear from the responses that there was concern about appropriate transport being provided when pupils change schools. Another key concern was that Leicestershire residents wanted the ability to express a preference for their traditional catchment school, instead of the nearest school which could be in a neighbouring local authority.

As Chairman of the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership the safety and security of communities is a key priority, don't suffer in silence, call the numbers if you are experiencing anti-social behaviour and the agencies will do everything they can to help. Charnwood Borough Council are distributing the fridge magnets in areas where there have been reports of anti-social behaviour, but anyone can get in touch and get a copy or download one from the Council's website.

Your views are important and help understand what effect the proposed changes might have. Please send the County Council your views by filling in the questionnaire by Sunday 15th June. Find out more by visiting www.leics.gov.uk/schools_college_transport Contacts for Anti-Social Behaviour. Fridge magnets "contact cards" are being delivered to residents in a new initiative to tackle anti-social behaviour in Charnwood. Charnwood Borough Council have produced the colourful magnets which contain important contact numbers for the Council's anti-social behaviour team and Leicestershire Police. The magnets are being distributed in areas where there have been concerns that nuisance behaviour is harming the quality of life for local residents who do not know who they should call about it. I have been told by residents they don't always know who to contact or how and when they experience nuisance behaviour, so these colourful contact cards have been produced to help.

Residents are being advised if there's a crime in progress, call Leicestershire Police on 101 or 999. For all other complaints of anti-social behaviour call Charnwood Borough Council on 01509 634533. Bradgate Park Visitor Centre. As a Trustee of Bradgate Park it was a pleasure to attend an event at the Deer Barn Buildings, where Sir David Attenborough gave his backing to a new exciting project to deliver a new Visitor Centre within the Deer Barn Buildings. the Rotary Club of Leicester is leading the appeal to support the cost of designing and building the visitor centre exhibits. The Club has been closely associated with Bradgate Park and Swithland Wood for most of those hundred years. Now the Rotary Club wishes to mark the anniversary by helping to provide a new facility at the Park that will benefit everyone to understand more about Bradgate. It is hoped this new project will help encourage visitors to explore areas of the Park that they have not previously visited and will be a centre of education for school groups, helping to understand such areas as the fossilised imprints of one of the early life-forms that lived over 500million years ago, along with the living reminders of the medieval Bradgate landscape, the deer herd and the ancient oak trees. In order to deliver this exciting project the Rotary Club of Leicester is aiming to raise £150,000 over the next three years. Plans to Improve the Outwoods. I know many residents in my area visit the Outwoods, especially when the bluebells are in full bloom. The Outwoods Management Committee are inviting visitors to have their say on proposals to improve the ancient woodland site. The aim would be to enhance the Outwoods as a visitor attraction to generate income to invest money back into the site to protect and sustain it for future generations, as well as retaining its Green Flag status. Under the proposals an existing cottage and its gardens at the site would be transformed into a café, visitor centre and a natural play area. The centre would act as a hub for local schools, community and youth groups to get closer to nature as well as providing a wealth of information about the wood. The consultation will also ask visitors to the wood how they feel about potential parking charges as a way of funding and maintaining any improvements. The consultation closes on June 23rd and is being administered by Charnwood Borough Council on behalf of the Management Committee. It can be completed by visiting www.charnwood.gov.uk/ outwoodsinformation or hard copies can be picked up from the car park at the Outwoods. Transfer Assets to Communities. Community Groups, voluntary organisations and charities are being invited to help shape the way they bid to take ownership of local assets. Charnwood Borough Council is consulting with local groups on its proposed community asset transfer policy, which will dictate how not-for-profit groups can own local facilities. Local assets could include parks, buildings, community centres or land owned by the Council which can be sold to local groups at discounted rates. Ultimately this policy will govern how local assets are transferred from the Council to community groups. To have your say on the draft policy visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/currentconsultations and click on the Community Asset Transfer Policy Consultation link and respond before 12 noon on Friday June 13th 2014. If you need to contact me on any issues write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 0HH e-mail david.snartt@leics.gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804.

POLICEMATTERS the confidence to report anti-social behaviour to Police and be re-assured that it will be dealt with effectively.

Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 19 April and 18 May 2014 inclusive. The figures this period show that the village has unfortunately suffered from another crime spike, with a number of the crimes taking place over the first May Bank Holiday week-end. This followed what had been, up until then, a relatively crime free period and it would appear from investigations that the offender(s) had taken advantage of the fact that many residents were away over that week-end. It highlights the need to be security conscious at all times, particularly when the property is going to be empty for a period, ensuring keys are taken out of internal doors and some lighting is on in the property during the dark hours (utilising light timers etc). The Police are continuing with their operations, both in Anstey and adjoining areas, to try and capture offenders and deter these types of crimes. Offenders often move from village to village to commit crime, and we have seen similar crime spikes in Cropston and Thurcaston over the period. I am pleased to report that a male has been arrested for burglary in an adjoining village very recently, so it will be interesting to see if the crimes of this nature in Anstey subside.

ASB takes many forms and examples include: • Nuisance neighbours • Yobbish behaviour and intimidating groups taking over public spaces • Vandalism • People dumping rubbish and abandoned cars • Reckless driving of mini-motorbikes Anti-social behaviour ruins lives. It doesn't just make life unpleasant; it prevents the renewal of disadvantaged areas and creates an environment where more serious crime can take hold. Don’t suffer in silence – if you are a victim of anti-social behaviour then please report it to Police on – 101. As always, we would ask all residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activity to Police on 101 or, if you feel a crime is taking place, 999.

ASB campaign Tackling anti-social behaviour effectively remains a Force priority and to assist in this campaign Police have recently launched three new ASB Police cars, staffed by Police Officers and PCSO’s, dedicated to tackling ASB, problem solving and finding long term solutions to ASB issues. This is also at the heart of the Police and Crime Plan and we want people to have

The Martin High School...

Our first year as an 11-16 Last September we took on our first Year 10 and began our conversion to 11-16. So far so good. All the signs indicate that the conversion is going well. • Student attendance is up with our Year 10 attending 95% of the time

• Most students are saying how much they are enjoying stopping on and studying at the MHS • Its early days but the progress that our students are making matches what we had anticipated. More students are making more progress because they have stayed on at the school.

It’s fun to be a student in a school where you can play a part in its development. Our students are watching their new school be created around them. Our second new build of 12 classrooms was completed on 25th April. We are now equipped with classrooms for our Year 11 next year. My grandad has just died and I want to collect money for LOROS School should be fun. School should be about learning and developing yourself. School is also about learning how to love and support others.

Leicestershire and Rutland County basketball finals played at Beauchamp college, where our under14 boys basketball team came 2nd in the county.

At school a lot of learning takes place outside the classroom. Over the year the MHS School Council actively promotes a number of charities that it raises funds for. Many of these grow out of the personal experiences of our students. I was very touched by the Year 7 girl who explained that her grandfather had just died and the people at LOROS had so looked after him. She wanted to give back something to the charity to thank them for this. We want all our teenagers to learn how to do this. What’s coming up at the MHS Lots of activity and events. Here are the highlights:School concert 11th June. Always good fun with lots of musicians, actors and dancers. Tickets are in huge demand so watch out for touts! COMMUNITY GOVERNOR VACANCIES AT MARTIN HIGH SCHOOL This is a very exciting time at Martin High School as we expand from an 11-14 to 11-16 provider. Our change is as a result of huge community demand and September 2015 will see our first year 11 taking their GCSEs.

FILMREVIEW

At the MHS we value all our students. Our focus is on developing them as people. We work with our families in making this happen. We view learning as a broad range of activity that enables each student to grow and develop in understanding and personality. A main focus is on the classroom but our students are encouraged to actively participate in their school; enjoy extra-curricular activities and use their learning at home. Being a Governor is a rewarding and sometimes challenging way of making a contribution to your community by enhancing the education of young people.

The seventh film in the epic X-Men franchise sees the line-up from the original trilogy teaming up with their younger selves from X-Men: First Class. Together, they must fight for their survival by changing the past in order to save our future.

Community Governors are elected by the Governing Body and must either live or work in the school’s catchment area. Other Governors are elected from parents and staff. Do you have? • An interest in the future of young people • Time, energy and enthusiasm • A desire to make a difference and contribute to your local community • An ability to work as a team • Willingness to ask questions, listen and learn

X-Men: Days of Future Past - 12A

Twentieth Century Fox bring together an epic cast, including Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games), Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave) and James McAvoy (The Last King of Scotland) for the ultimate comic book battle extravaganza.

A Million Ways To Die In The West

• An ability to look at issues objectively

Out 6/6/2014

Then you could have what it takes to join one of the largest volunteer groups in the country, working with others to get the best for our young people.

Albert is a cowardly sheep farmer who has just been dumped by his girlfriend, and lives in a town where unfortunate deaths seem to be the norm. When a beautiful woman shows up, Albert quickly falls in love as she helps him to find some courage; something he must utilise when her dangerous husband arrives in town seeking revenge.

An effective Governing Body will have a good mix of skills, knowledge and experience but most importantly a strong commitment to Martin High School and its pupils. We are particularly interested in people with skills in: • Understanding how people learn • Fundraising and grant finding for both small and large scale projects. • Estate management and buildings • Using the internet to enhance education and communications. The team of Governors play a key role in: • Setting targets for raising standards • Monitoring progress against these targets • Being a critical friend to the school’s management by finding the right balance between supporting and challenging the Head Teacher and therefore the school • Contributing to policies and strategic development As part of the team you may wish to join a sub-committee looking at specific areas such as curriculum , health and safety or finance. The main Governing Body meets twice per term at 6.00pm with a similar number of committee meetings. All Governors are given the opportunity to undertake training and develop new skills. Being a Governor can be enjoyable, stimulating and rewarding. There is a comprehensive support system in place from fellow Governors and formal training courses. Still interested? Please send a written application by e-mail or post of no more than 150 words detailing why you want the position and what skills and experiences you will bring to the Governing Body to: Sue Plunkett, Business Manager businessmanager@martin.leics.sch.uk

Seth McFarlane (Ted, Family Guy) directs, produces, co-writes and stars in this Western comedy, and is supported with a first class cast, including Charlize Theron (Prometheus, Monster) and Liam Neeson (Taken, Non-Stop).

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY

The topic for the 14th April accompanied by slides, was very ably given by Josephine Burgess who is a volunteer speaker for “Save the childrenâ€? The title of the talk for adults, is called “Save the Children Then and Nowâ€? and was about the history of how and who founded the Charity and what has been achieved since the founding and the current work being undertaken. The founder was a well-to-do Edwardian lady named Eglantyne Jebb. She was not particularly enamoured with children but decided to “give lifeâ€? from a strategic distance by setting up the fund at the end of the First World War. She was driven not by sentimental concern for individual children, but by a passionate humanitarism that many had lost sight of at the end of the War. Her first quest was to seek help from the Archbishop of Canterbury asking him to donate collections on one day close to Christmas, but he declined not wishing to associate himself with a political organisation. Eglantyne then wrote to the Pope, who granted an interview which proved very positive as he then contributed ÂŁ25,000 of his personal money before promising that the Catholic Churches all round the World would contribute to the Fund. The Church of

England and several other faith groups then came together for an unprecedented international inter-faith collection in support of the Fund; save the Children was then placed firmly on the international map with sister organisations quickly appearing all over the World. Eglantyne worked tirelessly and one day in 1922, she looked down from the top of Mount Saleve outside Geneva, over the international city and drafted the pioneering statement of children’s human rights that has since evolved into the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child – forever changing the way the World regards and treats its children. Sadly, six years later at 52 years old, Eglantyne died.

The Anstey Players Proudly Present King Dick 111 On Tour It is an evening of comedy with a Royal Banquet included. We will be at Huncote Methodist Church Hall on Saturday 14th June , Syston Methodist Church on Friday 20th June and Saturday 21st June and Anstey URC Church Hall on Friday 27th June and Saturday 28th June all at 730 PM.

Her legacy brought the current work into focus throughout the World saving the lives and mental security enabling the chance for children to thrive and prosper. The talk was thoroughly appreciated by the Membership resulting in a marvellous collected donation of ÂŁ100.00.

Tickets are ÂŁ8-00 including the meal. Please book early on 0116 2886846 or 07976931311 for a wonderful evening.

Our May Meeting will take the form of a Coach Outing to Carsington Water and Masson Mills.

BRADGATE FLOWER CLUB On Wednesday 4 June, Bradgate Flower Club welcomes Roma Berridge from Bingham, Notts as the guest demonstrator. Roma's theme is "Hop, Skip and Jump". The meeting at Newtown Linford Village Hall (LE6 0AE) is open to visitors and guests - the entry fee is £5. Details from Lilian Coleman on 0116 2363191. Bradgate Flower Club is holding a Pudding Evening on Friday 20th June at the Linford Club, 66 Main St, Newtown Linford, Leicester (LE6 0AD). A Ukulele band will entertain. Puddings are to be donated. The entry fee is £5 per person. Details from Lilian Coleman on 0116 2363191. Bradgate Flower Club offers an invitation to visit an NGS garden in North Luffenham on Tuesday 15th July. The Roberts coach will leave from Newtown Linford Village Hall at 4.00pm and return for 10.00pm. A total cost of £24 includes travel, garden entry and a hot and cold buffet at the Wheatsheaf in Edith Weston. Details from Lilian Coleman on 0116 2363191.

The last month has seen some movement. Charnwood Core Strategy The Government Inspector wrote to Charnwood Council on 12th May stating he would not accept the council’s wish to proceed with the Strategy adoption until an up to date assessment of housing needs in the area has been proven. Thus confirming that in all likelihood the plan will not be reviewed again before January 2015 and implementation would be several months later. If the council does not accept this the Strategy may have to be withdrawn and work start again. Anstey Developments Planning applications total 437 dwellings. Conditional approval has been given for 57 on Gynsill Lane, but the footpath to the village centre must be upgraded. A section 106 legal document is being written to ensure the developer meets the conditions laid down by the Borough Council. Davidsons have put in a full planning application for 96 houses for Phases 2 & 3 on Groby Road. Outline planning was given for this in 2011. You can still send in objections to this development, the planning application number is P/14/0624/2. The other applications for Bradgate Road [19 houses], Cropston Road [65 houses] and Fairhaven Farm [160 houses] and Gynsill Lane [40 houses] are in abeyance. As was explained previously, Leicester County Council has described traffic conditions at The Nook roundabout as serious and objected to the Cropston Road application. This in turn affects the Bradgate Road and Fairhaven applications. Developers are trying to find ways of overcoming this situation. We imagine unless a by-pass is built that will be an impossible task to achieve. Lingdale Golf Club Village shops can bid for support

A delegation of Lingdale Golf Club members recently played a group of injured service personnel at Lingdale under the Help for Heroes Battleback scheme. This is a military initiative aimed at returning them to a normal active lifestyle and aiding both their physical and psychological rehabilitation. A good time was had by all to such an extent that plans are afoot to make this an annual event

Grants to help village shops boost their businesses are on offer from a £15,000 county council scheme. Leicestershire County Council is running a village shop support scheme, to help village shops and Post Offices develop and upgrade their services. It is offering grants of up to £3,000 to improve the range, quality and accessibility of services at the heart of local communities. Councillor Pam Posnett, chair of the Leicestershire Rural Partnership, said: “Rural services such as shops and post offices are crucial to communities and we want to help these local businesses to thrive. Improvements such as new chillers and display units can improve the range of stock, as well as the appearance and layout of the store.” For further details, see http://www.kerchingretail.com/vss

Please remember to close all windows, and doors especially the downstairs windows before going to bed. Most of the burglaries in the summer are opportunist, so don’t become a victim. Also please make sure your vehicle is secure when you leave it. Lock all doors and make sure your windows are closed and that you haven’t left any valuables on show. It only takes a second for a thief to break a window. SHED ALARMS I am pleased to say that the shed alarms have now arrived. Quite a few of you have been to collect one, and I hope you are feeling a bit safer now. I managed to get a good deal on the alarms. They are for internal use on sheds and come with a FREE external sensor alarm. I still have a good supply left if anyone else is interested in obtaining one. The price is only £10. We are unfortunately still experiencing a high volume of crime in Anstey so please make sure you secure all your valuables before going out. GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS I am very pleased to be able to welcome June Murray to Anstey NHW. June has very kindly volunteered to be the new coordinator for Ashfield Drive. I also want to welcome David Adams who has volunteered to be the coordinator for Latimer Street.

I have recently been informed that the coordinator for Broughton Close, Don Creighton is now in a nursing home. Don has done a brilliant job for the residents of Broughton Close and also Anstey NHW, always willing to help, and was a member of the North Area NHW Executive committee before ill health forced him to step down. NHW COORDINATORS URGENTLY REQUIRED We still have vacancies for NHW coordinators on the following schemes. • Broughton Close • Birkdale Road/Hazelhead Road • Burgin Road • Charles Drive • Holgate Close/Netherfield Road These schemes are already set up, and just need someone to be the representative for their scheme. If you think you would be interested in taking on one of these schemes please get in touch. We are trying to make Anstey a 100% NHW area. I am presently busy setting up new schemes in Anstey, and targeting the areas which have suffered from the recent spate of shed/garage break-ins. Please fill in your NHW surveys when they pop through your letter box. Either send your reply to me via email or wait for me to call and collect it. If you need to contact me anytime my details are: diane@ansteynhw.co.uk or 0116 2365745

LOCAL LETTER It's amazing how many dog owners, walking round Anstey with their much loved dogs, do not have them safely on their leads as traffic rushes by. Especially, as many of these dog walkers have a leash in their hands! It is a sort of arrogance, 'look how well trained my dog is' which may be true, but the dog is not totally under control and may be of concern to other pedestrians who could be nervous of dogs and dog owners who do have their pet under control. The loose dog itself could be distracted by another dog or sudden noise and be killed or injured. A while ago, I heard of a motorist, distracted by a loose dog which he tried to avoid hitting, collided with another car. The owner walked on with the dog seemingly unconcerned that the dog had been the cause of the accident and left the motorists to sort out their insurance details. While we are on the subject of dogs, joggers and cyclists please give thought to your mutt as you race along, especially in hot weather. There are few breeds of dogs which really enjoy a sustained run, much preferring a walk which involves investigation of a host of smells, other dogs and experiences and when necessary a drink. Give a thought to Man's best friend and act responsibly.

Anstey Parish Council Annual Report 2013/2014

Annual Report Purpose of the Report 1.

To give details of the achievements of the Parish Council over the last 12 months and to set out the Council’s priorities for 2014/15.

Achievements 2.

Over the past 12 months, the Parish Council and its staff have continued to be very active in maintaining and developing its community assets within the village.

3.

The main assets of the Council are:  The Jubilee Hall, which continues to be very well used by village organisations; (and the income continues to cover the loan interest repayments).  The Stadon Road Recreation Ground, which includes the 2 equipped play areas, the multi-use games area and the War Memorial.  The top green on Bradgate Road.  The lower green by the brook on Leicester Road, including the Packhorse Bridge (a scheduled ancient monument).  The cemetery on Groby Road.  Mitchells Field on Cropston Road.  Link Road Playing Fields, which includes the rugby pitch.  The Scout Hut which is leased to the local Scout Group.  The public toilets in The Nook car park.

4.

I should also mention that the Parish Council continues to provide Christmas lights in the centre of the village, which, in my opinion, improve each year.

5.

The main focus during the past 12 months has been to ensure that all of these assets are kept in good repair for the benefit of the residents of Anstey.

Main Achievements in 2013/14 6.

22

There have been a number of notable achievements over the past 12 months: •

Securing a lease agreement with Charnwood Borough Council for Millfield Playing Field and providing a new playground area on this playing field (at the bottom of Peartree Close).

The installation of two new high quality pieces of play equipment at the Recreation Ground.

t: 0800 6446 150 • e: yourlocal@openboxpromotions.co.uk • w: www.openboxpromotions.co.uk

The new play area at Long Close which has been funded by Wilson Homes development. This is currently looked after by Charnwood Borough Council but will become the responsibility of the Parish Council in due course.

Support for fund raising and charitable events.

Providing grants to support such groups as the Scouts, The Royal British Legion, B-Active, Anstey Christmas Day Lunch, Churches together in Anstey, Youth Café.

Achievement in obtaining the General Power of Competency has extended the powers of the Parish Council.

Hosting theatre and film events.

Welcomed back a “New” Councillor – Sarah Taylor.

Working together with Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council on areas of work that fall under their jurisdiction. For example: highways, street lighting, planning.

Priorities for 2014/15 7.

As stated above, the Parish Council continues to develop its existing assets and to acquire further assets that it considers will be beneficial to the village.

8.

The priorities for the Parish Council are considered at their Annual Parish Meeting in May.

9.

Plans for the coming year include:  To continue to work with the Anstey Nomads, Anstey Swifts, Charnwood Borough Council and the County FA to try to develop Mitchells Field for wider community use.  To consider the preparation of a Neighbourhood Plan for the Parish.  To continue discussions with Charnwood BC and David Wilson Homes to have the new open space areas adjacent to Long Close (off Bradgate Road) transferred to the Parish Council, together with funds to allow the areas to be maintained by the Parish over the next 10 years.  To respond on behalf of the community to the Draft Charnwood Local Plan.  To work with Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council to ensure that the community assets to be provided by the developers of the Groby Road housing development are fully implemented.  To work in partnership with Martin High School to ensure that the School has the ability to continue the education of local children to a high standard, with access of recreational facilities are widely used by the Community.  To support local groups to create a sustainable community within Anstey.

t: 0800 6446 150 • e: yourlocal@openboxpromotions.co.uk • w: www.openboxpromotions.co.uk

23

10.

However, it should be noted that, in addition to the above, the day-to-day workload of the Parish Clerk and her staff is equally important and however much we aspire to achieve the proposals outlined above, we often find that we have to wait on the actions of other organisations before we can move forward. Much of the time of the Parish Clerk has been spend this year on planning issues for Anstey.

11.

Residents will also realise that the possible development of other assets in the village will have to be considered to be secondary priorities and, as such, proposals for the Link Road playing fields will have to be put on hold for the time being.

Financial Information 12.

The Parish Council recognises that we all operate within difficult economic times with Central Government funding cuts. For 2014/15 the Parish Council has increased the precept by 6.3% on a Band D property. This increase equates to about 50p per month.

13.

The full unaudited Statements of Accounts for 2013/14 can be viewed during the Audit process for the Council and copies of these are made available at the Parish Meeting.

Mike had been both Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Council and could always be relied upon to attend meetings with other organisations and argue Anstey’s corner! He will be sadly missed.

Conclusion 14.

In conclusion, I would like to extend my thanks to the Clerk and staff of Anstey Parish Council for their continuing efforts to provide top quality services and facilities for the residents of the village.

15.

I would also like to thank my fellow councillors for their support for all of our achievements over the past 12 months.

LOROS is gearing up Newtown Linford support for the annual bike Gardening Club ride at Rutland Water.

Six Gold Medals at Chelsea!!! There are not many garden designers who can rival such success. Adam Frost won his sixth gold medal for the garden he designed for Chelsea this year and cemented himself even more firmly as one of the stars of modern horticulture. His reputation is growing rapidly and he is appearing more regularly on television gardening shows this year. Apart from his own garden, he is also involved in the One Show Garden which is being designed by the winning viewer and shown at Hampton Court later this year.

This years One Big Bike Ride will be taking place on Sunday 8th June 2014 in the beautiful surroundings of Rutland Water. Registrations are coming through thick and fast and the organisers are all hoping for yet another great event. Set in 4200 acres of open countryside, Rutland Water Park is the central rural attraction in England's smallest county of Rutland and offers activities for all the family. There are plenty of places to eat along the route, including Whitwell, Empingham, Normanton and Barnsdale, or why not bring along a picnic.

Cyclists can choose from a 7, 18 or 25 mile route. The 18 and 25 mile routes will start at 9.30am, with the 7 mile route starting at 10.30am. Entry prices are as follows: £5.00: Adults (£10.00 on the day) £2.50: Children (£5.00 on the day) £10.00: Family - 2 adults and 2 children (No family tickets available on the day) N.B Children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Dear All Not much to tell you this month as I am in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the Royal Infirmary. At 6.29pm on my birthday, May 8th, I had a bone marrow transplant in the presence of BMTU Nurse, Jessica Gunn, and my daughter, Gemma. The stem cells arrived that afternoon from the donor in Germany, an unknown but spectacularly amazing person. All seems to be going well, though I have to admit that I have had some pretty rough days. Everybody has been very supportive throughout the whole process and I should be in hospital for another 4 - 6 weeks. Leicester on the Up During my time detained at the NHS' leisure, I've managed to watch (on my FREE TV!) Leicester stay on the map in more ways than one; Mark Selby winning the world snooker; and Leicester City FC getting promoted to the Promised Land. I endured Eurovision (fell asleep 5 times...) and send commiserations to Anstey-born Molly, I still can't believe Austria won...or was I really hallucinating?!

Councillor's Allowances I've decided to take the £89 A YEAR Councillor allowance - the first one for 5 years - though it seems that the allowance for home broadband will be cut, so I will be no better of (worse in fact!). Hmmm. Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club An almost new team have got off to a fabulous start under the Captaincy of 18 year old Joe Harris, wining their first 5 league games in the newly formed Leicester and Rutland Cricket League. Sri-Lankan players Anil and Sahan have both scored Centuries well done lads. I am proud to be President of the club and hope the winning streak continues. First World War A few people have been in touch to ask what Anstey are doing to celebrate 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War. I feel that 'celebrate' is the wrong direction to take, we need to watch the old footage and remember the carnage and bloodshed

caused by sending young men to die. If anyone has any ideas as to how we can appropriately and respectfully remember those who fought for our freedom, please get in touch. New Development Unfortunately the development at Gynsill Lane was approved on the second attempt with Chairman Peter Osbourne's casting vote in favour of going ahead. I suppose that's democracy but we still have to fight the forthcoming application on Cropston Road, so Give It Your Best Shot Everybody! I understand that speculative planning applications still keep coming in, not only for Anstey, but all over Charnwood. Hope to be back home by the next issue. Everyone here at the LRI have been very special and looked after me exceptionally well :-)

Film Presentations From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council

In May's "Sunshine on Leith" film, there were more than 12 brilliant songs featured by "The Proclaimers". The singing and dancing museum creator played by Jason Flemyng really stole the show. This film was pleasing entertainment, a heartfelt fun story with very good performances.

"Twelve Years a Slave" will be shown on Friday June 13th and lasts 134 minutes. June's drama remarkably won this year's Oscar for Best Film. It is based on an incredible true story of one man's fight for survival and freedom in pre Civil War United States of America. When a freed black man is sold back into slavery, he faces cruelty but also unexpected kindnesses. The director, Steve McQueen, has created a masterpiece. “Saving Mr Banks" will be shown on Friday September 12th. Have a good summer! Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £4-50 and concessions are £4. The price includes refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets can be purchased via the parish office - 0116 236 7626 or at the door.

JUNE Hopefully now that we are in June the weather is better and we can begin to enjoy the garden for more hours, barbeque anyone? The threat of frosts should have passed so it is safe to plant out summer bedding and to put hanging baskets up. Water the bedding before planting and then again after planting, and keep moist. If you have newly planted shrubs and trees then keep an eye on them and water if necessary. Sweet peas should be beginning to flower, to encourage more blooms cut the flowers as they appear. Stake tall or floppy herbaceous perennials. Keep the new shoots of climbing plants tied into their supports. There should be a bit of early veg about, potatoes, strawberries and salad crops etc. Continue to side shoot tomatoes. Sow some late runner beans to harvest in September. If you have a greenhouse keep it well ventilated and shaded. There is shading fabric available as well as a white wash to put on the glass. Check plants daily and water as necessary. Keep humidity levels up to help combat Red Spider Mite. If you have a new lawn or newly laid turf keep it moist. If we have a prolonged dry spell raise the blade on the mower to reduce stress on the grass. At the time of writing we do not know what the weather has in store for us this year it may be worth giving a thought to water conservation. Water butts are relatively inexpensive and the water collected is perfectly adequate for watering the garden. Also, as I mentioned last month, consider an irrigation system for worry free holidays. They are easy to install and save a lot of work. Hopefully June will be warm and sunny and we can enjoy the fruits of our labour.

Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club

Ferns, Bamboo & Grasses Our May speaker, Colin Ward, gave us an introduction to the cultivation, care and husbandry of this wide variety of fascinating plants. Colin, originally a farmer in the Fens, became interested in these plants as a hobby and now runs Swines Meadow Farm Nursery full time and considers himself a ‘plant nutter’. The talk was ‘hands on’ and Colin bought with him a huge number of plants for demonstration and sale.

Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club have started the new cricket season extremely well in the new Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League. The first team play in Division 7 West and the second team participate in Division 8 West of the new pyramid league. Both teams will be pushing for promotion and to move higher in the league system over the coming seasons.

Colin started his talk on bamboos. He admitted that many people are reluctant to put bamboo in the garden because of its reputation of being a ‘thug’. However, Colin explained that there are two major types of bamboo, and while one type is a thug and its rhizomes will go through concrete, the other is more clump forming. Colin also explained about the most effective rhizome barriers. Although a grass, bamboos should not be treated like a grass and shouldn’t be cut back to the ground. Bamboos will not thrive grown in a pot, they are much happier in the ground.

Under new captain, Joe Harris, the first team at the time of writing have won every match and are top of Division 7 West. There have been some outstanding achievements with Sahan Tharanga scoring a century and John Wright notching up a half century against Shepshed Town 3. The bowlers have also bowled fantastically well as a unit with all opposition teams to date being bowled out for 116 or less.

Colin also had a wide variety of grasses with him. These came in many sizes and colours and are suited to many aspects and positions in the garden, from tall and elegant Stipa Gigantea, variegated Miscanthus, to attractive gold leafed Carex. Colin made the point that at this time of year, ornamental grasses look like grass! It is later in the year that grasses look great in the garden. When it came to ferns, Colin again had a huge variety with him and spent a bit of time pointing out some of their attractive features. His view was that it is best to buy juvenile plants when buying ferns, as they will be easier to establish in the garden. This was a very informative talk and many club members had questions for Colin and bought plants! Future Club events Following the May meeting, the Club now goes into its summer programme (and doesn’t meet in the hall again till October!) The summer events include ;• Two evening garden visits (in June and August) • Summer BBQ (for members and their guests) • Trip to Tatton Park Flower Show (coach now full) • Annual Garden, Craft and Produce Show (September) New members are always most welcome For more information on any of the summer events and an excellent summer leaflet call Dave Haddon on (0116) 235 9758

NEXT ISSUE OUT Friday 27th June 2014 Advert Deadline: Monday 23rd June

The 2nd team have also had a useful start to the season and won their first match of the season at home to Braunstone, bowling the opposition out for 53 and then winning by 7 wickets. Charlie Wilkes has returned for his 4th season as captain of the 2nd XI. They suffered a blow in their second match however, losing by 7 wickets against Leicester Ivanhoe. The third match of the season saw a brilliant century from Anil Revu who scored 100 not out against Sapcote in a winning draw. Both teams will be hoping to continue their fine start to the season in the coming weeks. A lot of this season’s success so far is undoubtedly due to the fact that the players attended training sessions throughout the winter, which gave them a running start at the beginning of the season. A few new players joined the club in the off season, including Kumara Sanira and John Wright. We have fantastic facilities down at the ground and a lot of this is thanks to the tireless effort from our ground staff. The club also have a hard working committee who ensure that the club goes from strength to strength. If you are interested in joining the club, please email our secretary Amanda Wilkes. Amanda’s email address is amandaandcharlie@btinternet.com. We are also now hosting weekly training sessions at the Gynsils Lane ground on Wednesdays from 5.30pm, so if you’re interested in playing for the club, why not come down and practice. Please also visit our website at http://ansteyandglenfield.playcricket.com for regular updates, results and news throughout the season.

A Beautiful Local Garden is Opening to the Public A beautiful local garden is opening to the public again in July under the National Gardens Scheme to raise money for several worthwhile NGS charities. Last summer, during two Sundays, Mike & Liz Newcombe welcomed 500 visitors to their Newtown Linford garden and were able to raise £2500 for the NGS charities. The interest in and the enjoyment of this garden has resulted in several local groups, including gardening clubs, arranging private visits to the garden this summer. The Newtown Linford Gardening Club will also, once again, use this venue for their Summer Party on Tuesday 22nd July. On both Sunday 6th and Sunday 13th July the garden, which is situated halfway along Ulverscroft Lane between Newtown Linford and Ulverscroft, will be open to the public from 11.00am – 5.00pm. The 2-acre SW facing garden has stunning views across Charnwood countryside. Near the house are patios, water features, flower and shrub beds, fruit trees, greenhouses and vegetable plots. Lawns then slope down to a gravel garden, a large wildlife pond with waterfall and three small areas of woodland, with pleasant walks through many species of trees. The lower two thirds of this garden has been created since 2004, with over 160 conifers and deciduous trees planted. There are several places to sit and relax around the garden. Light refreshments will be available. There will also be plant sales, a book stall and a craft stall, selling jewellery, scarves etc. Admission for adults is £3.50, children are free and dogs on leads are welcome with well-behaved owners. PLEASE COME AND JOIN US. The full address is – ‘Mountain Ash’, 140 Ulverscroft Lane, Newtown Linford, LE6 0AJ. For further details and some photographs of the garden see the NGS website – www.ngs.org.uk – put either Mountain Ash or LE6 0AJ into the garden finder. Amongst the many charities supported by the NGS are Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices, Carers Trust and, this year, Parkinsons UK.

Well Done to everyone at Cropston Pre-school. - Sue Simpson - Owner / Manager

Anstey’s opportunity to ‘dig’ history Anstey’s residents can get hands-on experience taking part in a major project exploring the rich history of Charnwood Forest. ‘Charnwood Roots’ is exploring how people have lived, worked and enjoyed this unique part of Leicestershire across the centuries; from pre-history through to modern day. And as part of the Festival of British Archaeology (July 12th to July 27th), Charnwood Roots will be holding a number of events around Charnwood Forest to give local people a chance to take part in some hands on archaeology.

The most important event will be a community dig in Anstey, where early history remains something of a mystery. But there are clues waiting to be discovered in back gardens around the village. Beneath the earth are objects left behind by the people who lived in Anstey hundreds, even thousands of years ago. “This evidence can be pieced together to help us understand what was happening in Anstey in ancient and medieval times and will allow us to build up a picture of how the village developed in the period before we have written records,” explains Charnwood Roots Project Manager Julie Attard of Leicestershire Victoria County History Trust. The dig will be led by the Charnwood Roots team with help from archaeologists from the University of Leicester and local volunteers. “It’s a project that will unearth a few hidden stories and be a great opportunity to celebrate the many contributions Charnwood has made to the nation. “We’re looking for 30 householders in Anstey who would be willing to let us dig a small test pit in their back garden, a hole just one metre square by one metre deep. “The dig is suitable for everyone. You can volunteer your garden for one of our 30 test pits, offer to help dig a test-pit elsewhere in the village, or help wash and process the finds,” adds Julie. All training and equipment will be provided and no previous experience is necessary. The dig will take place over the weekend of Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th July. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Julie at charnwoodroots@le.ac.uk or telephone 0116 252 5946. You can find out more about the whole project at www.charnwoodroots.org or follow at @CharnwoodRoots and there’s a growing community of support on Facebook.
