LUNCHING LADIES Ladies, if you enjoy a good meal, good company and good entertainment you might be interested in joining the Newtown Linford Lunch Club. Despite the name you do not have to live in Newtown Linford. We meet at the Forest Hill Golf Club Botcheston once a month on a Wednesday for a three course meal after which we are entertained by a speaker. In recent months we have enjoyed talks about Living in China, Chocolate (demonstration and tasting!) and The Joy of Painting, when an amazing painting was created before our very eyes and, at Christmas, Eliza McClelland entertained us royally with stories and thoughts about the Festive Season. Talks coming up are entitled: Oprah Winfrey touched my elbow, Life and times of Coco Chanel, Amusing Poems, Autumn Garden and Myth of Belly Dancing amongst others. There is a friendly atmosphere, the venue is pleasant and the food is good. Why not give us a try? The three course meal with coffee is £16. If you decide you would like to join our club membership is £20 per year; this pays for the speakers. For more details or to book a meal phone 0116 2304420. If you have read a similar article before and not come along to try us why not do it this time?

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY
On the 9th March, we were pleased to invite Mr. Christopher Tarratt of Tarratts Jewellers in Market Street, Leicester. Mr. Tarratt’s talk was illustrated by the use a computerised film demonstrating various beautiful artefacts which have been made since the commencement of the business started by his grandfather Mr. George Tarratt in 1913. At that time the company earned the reputation as a recognised supplier of unique quality silverware. Silver items are not so popular these days, but still in demand for commemorative and prestigious Trophies presented at various sporting events around the country. George’s son, Ivan, joined the firm in 1936 after training at Wilson & Gill of London and took the firm on from the Art Deco era when the business moved along Market Street in 1967. He expanded its jewellery ranges and Watch lines. These included Patak Phillips, Rolex, Omega, Cartier and others. Inevitably the success resulted in a move in 2006 to the fabulous new showroom at 23-25 Market Street. We were delighted to view the interior and Christopher guided us round illustrating the comfortable atmosphere, sympathetic and knowledgeable salesmanship offered by the assistants. It was also very interesting to witness the work carried out in the creation of fine Jewellery etc. at the back of the Shop. Each day the fine dust from the workings of silver, gold and
platinum is hooved up and subjected to differing temperatures to melt down the materials, the loss of which would amount to hundreds of pounds. Christopher is the third generation partner, and the future looks very exciting with new collections, new partnerships and new initiatives moving the business forward. This was our first Meeting whereby gentlemen were invited to attend and judging from the response they appeared to have enjoyed themselves. Helped, no doubt, by the specially supplied cakes brought along by Mesdames Jenny Kennington, Gill Jefferson and Diane Rouse in celebration of their Birthdays in February. Our next Meeting will be on 13th April which will be a talk in recognition of the Centenary of the “Ladybird” Books. Do come and join us; I don’t know anyone who did not grow up with a Ladybird Book in their hands! Our Meetings take place at 2.15pm at the Cropston Evangelical Chapel, Station Road, Cropston, LE7 7HP on the 2nd Monday of every month. Plenty of parking spaces available. To find out more about The Monday Club, please ring me on 0116 2363467. I have an ansophone, so if I am not available, please leave a message and telephone number and I will return your call.

Anstey Butcher Passes Away Popular Anstey butcher, Barrie Till, who owned the premises at 59 Bradgate Road passed away on Monday 2nd February aged 80. Charles Barrie Till (known as Barrie) was born in the Woodgate area of Leicester in 1934, one of seven brothers and a sister, and on leaving school, he joined the family butchery business. He followed in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great grandfather who all had their own businesses in Woodgate, Sanvey Gate, Glenfield and Anstey. Barrie worked in the shops in Sanvey Gate and Woodgate and also in the local abattoir. At age 18 he did his National Service and was trained as a chef by the Army at Woolwich Barracks in London. Barrie took over the shop in Anstey in 1976 from the previous owner, John Walker. He built up the Anstey business over the years and had many regular customers. He was very knowledgeable and always had time for a chat with them, relaying many stories from the past. A visit to ‘Tills the Butchers’ was more of a social event than a shopping trip! His son, Charles, has worked with his father since leaving school and is continuing the family business. Barrie leaves his wife, Pam, to whom he had been married for 52 years, son Charles and daughter Lisa.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not
just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hello everyone Spring is in the air, birds coughing in the trees, and the pace is picking up every day as we get closer to the most fascinating general election for a long time. I wouldn’t like to predict who will be elected to run our county for the next few years. All I do hope is that, whatever party/s are set to govern us, they will be looking to put the Great back into Britain with honest and sensible policies that are fair for all.
Up for it As I have stated in last month’s Local, I am still not 100% well. However, I have been given the go ahead by my consultant at the LRI to contest the seats at Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) where I have represented Anstey since 1999, and at Anstey Parish Council, level where I have been a councillor since 1981. Polling day is May 7th, results day May 8th (my birthday…).
Closer still! The new play area within the Davidson development off Groby Road, Anstey, should be completed sometime in April 2015. The extension to Anstey cemetery will soon be under way, as will work on 36 new allotments; I understand that interest in 32 plots have already been placed so don’t delay, telephone Anstey Parish Council on 0116 2362646 for more information. I must say although I, like many others, didn’t want lots of new development within the village, the good thing about this is that, through negotiations, we have acquired lots of new green space. This includes play areas, allotments, cemetery improvements, traffic calming and so on through developer contributions.
The Nook car park After I insisted that the way into the GP’s Surgery and local businesses running off the car park must be open for access, a delay of 1 week was caused by CBC work department not having enough safety fencing to complete the work. The
improvements, which took over 2 years of campaigning, have, I am sure, been worth the extra week’s wait.
Chinese whispers again I would like to state that CBC have no intention at this time of making said car park into a pay and display. However, to make for a better flow, a small proportion of spaces may become time limited during the day.
The Eclipse This was pretty good, so I’m told. Unfortunately I went to sleep sitting in a chair watching through a window and awoke to bright sunshine (sigh!). 85% is good but as 70s pop fans will remember, Bonny Tyler’s was a total eclipse.
The Nook Roundabout
Wembley calling “Here we go!” Ex Anstey Nomads’ footballer, Wes York, 21, who now plays for Wrexham FC in the Vanarama Conference, has helped his team secure a cup final appearance in the FA Trophy final against North Ferriby Utd on Sunday 29th March - kick off 1.30pm at Wembley Stadium and covered live on BT Sport. Wrexham beat Torquay Utd in the semi-finals, whilst North Ferriby Utd beat Bath City. Good luck to Wes, let’s have a picture of you with the trophy for the next Local edition. Nomads supporters will remember a famous victory against North Ferriby Utd in 1996, winning 3-2 after being 2-0 down to reach the last 16 of the FA Vase.
Last chance to sponsor
Still no final solution to the traffic problems in this busy area. I am not sure what we can do to appease this ongoing problem but hopefully a solution can be found soon. The village has got bigger as we all know, so too have the surrounding areas but the infrastructures remain the same.
Cropston Road allotment society AGM Thank you to all those who attended for making me so welcome at their recent Annual General Meeting . I presented the prizes and gave a short speech on the allotments in Anstey over the years. I personally could remember 3 sites but doing a bit of research found 8; 1 or 2 were Dig for Victory sites which were set up during the Second World War by Agricultural Economist Professor John Raeburn (not a lot of people know that).
Mayor elect 2015/16 CBC mayor elect should be Cllr John Capleton who is the borough councillor for Mountsorrel. John will take over from my fellow Cllr for Anstey, Cllr Paul Day, who has served as Mayor of Charnwood over the last mayoral year. His deputy, all being well, will be Cllr Marion Smith who is the present
FLYER
councillor for Loughborough Southfields.
Still time to sponsor my nephew, Ryan Sutherington, in this year’s London Marathon on Sunday 26th April. He is raising money for Children with Cancer UK. If you can donate please go to uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ryansutherington. Other locals taking part in this event are Marc Schultz, raising money for the NSPCC; and Heather Vaughan, raising money for Anthony Nolan.
And finally, Mitchell’s Field latest More meetings have been held and things are moving steadily forward with this project. Watch this space as we go along.
Closure of banks Now that there are no banks open in Anstey, I saw a couple in the local butchers recently who wanted to open a joint account… That’s all for now, if you have any problems please get in touch through the usual channels and I am now on Facebook. Thank you
Cllr John Sutherington

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate.
Green Plaque Award Scheme. Following on from my last report, there may be just time to register your vote in the latest round of the Green Plaque Award Scheme. You may recall I was delighted to see the name of Charles Bennion on the shortlist of twelve nominations. I also learnt from a Woodhouse Parish Councillor that the winner of the 1914 Grand National, Sunloch is also included in the list. A full list and how to vote by Monday 6th April can be found by visiting www.leics.gov.uk/greenplaques. The six with the most votes will be awarded a Leicestershire County Council Green Plaque.
Gateway Signs are Unveiled. Attractive new signs featuring the well known Charnwood landmark Old John have been unveiled.
of the new Policing arrangements. I have asked for a meeting with the Police to better understand the way forward. Do remember to keep recording any crime and anti-social behaviour incidents with the police by contacting the Police on 101 or in an emergency 999.
Community Venues Invited to Bid. Wates, the Charnwood Borough Council's housing contractor are looking for local charity groups, schools, 'church groups, voluntary organisations and local clubs to apply for a 'makeover' to a venue or outside space that they use. The company along with staff from the Council will host a Dragon's Den style event in which the local community can 'pitch' for a helping hand with their project. This help will be part of the company's community day. Applications need to be submitted by April 25th 2015 and will be considered by a panel of judges. A group of finalists will be invited to 'pitch' their bids to the Dragon's at a presentation in May. After the presentations a winning bid will be selected for a makeover which will include labour for a day and material required to complete the project. The team at Wates will down tools in June and spend a day refurbishing the winning venue. If you would like to apply please e-mail Charnwood@wates.co.uk or you can collect an application form from the Councils' main reception at Southfields, Loughborough.
Charnwood Borough Council Election. I have been involved over the last months in bringing our Conservative team together for the Charnwood Borough Council Election on May 7th 2015. I am pleased we have selected two very able female candidates for the Anstey Ward. Both Deborah Taylor and Sue Witts have already completed outstanding work within the local community, therefore I welcome the selection of these two energetic
The new 'gateway' signs have been placed at nine places on main roads leading into Charnwood. I am pleased that one of the signs has been installed as you approach Anstey from Leicester, indeed it is an excellent place as you can see the real Old John from close to the site of the new sign.
Local Policing. I have asked for more details about the changes to local Policing within my Division. I am especially concerned about the level of resources under the new transformation programme which started in February. I am sure we all understand the budget pressures all agencies are experiencing, but I need to make sure I fully understand the implications

ladies to the local political scene. I will also be standing again for the Forest Bradgate Ward which includes Newtown Linford, Ulverscroft, Woodhouse and Woodhouse Eaves.
Anstey Library. I am most grateful to the members of the Anstey Library Interest Group especially Phil Knight and Deborah Taylor who have progressed this Community Library Project making it possible for Anstey to have a real possibility of keeping a Library within the centre of the village. In my view this is good news not only for Anstey but for the residents living in surrounding villages who will be able to continue to use this facility. The group have now submitted their business plan to the County Council outlining the way forward. I understand if all goes well the group have pencilled in September as a start date, therefore there will be a fair amount of work sorting out details before that time. I am sure Phil would welcome residents getting in touch with any ideas that could be incorporated in the running of the Library once the group take over, also hearing from anyone interested in joining the volunteers who have already expressed an interest in being involved. Phil may be contacted by e-mailing AnsteyLib@virginmedia.com
New Telephone Number 01509 634570. I have been asked to share this new telephone number when ringing Charnwood Borough Council for planning payments and general planning enquiries. Case specific calls can continue to be made to named officers on the published numbers on case correspondence.
Anstey, The Nook Car Park. Hopefully by the time you read this The Nook car park will have been resurfaced. I am sorry for any inconvenience caused whilst the work was being carried out. You may recall that I was progressing some of the parking bays having a two hour waiting limit. I understand this should be completed after the resurfacing work has been carried out. This idea came to me from a resident and supported by local retail businesses. If you need to contact me on any issue write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. Student, 18: Passionate for charity work, ready to skydive
FILM
Jumping from 10, 000 feet, free falling down to 5,000 feet in the air at 120mph. Despite being a young, healthy 18 year old man from Leicester, I am not fazed by the thought of these statistics. Skydiving will be an incredible once in a life time experience to raise money and awareness for the children’s charity Barnardo’s.
Divergent Series: Insurgent
Making a difference to other people’s lives is something that has always been a personal interest. In the past I have raised £350 for my local football team, Anstey Swifts, been an event organiser for two Anthony Nolan registration days one of which broke the national record for the most of people to register at a single event at Regent College, dressed as Pudsey Bear bucket collecting at Beaumont Leys and I am now the event manager for the University of Derby (UoD) first year students charity week committee raising money for Barnardo’s. My passion for making a difference to other people’s lives stretches more than just charity work. I am studying the Primary Education BEd at the UoD which will qualify me to become a primary school teacher by July 2017.
REVIEW
In a dystopian Chicago, Tris and Four are fugitives running from the leader and commanding power of the dominant Erudite elite. As unrest lies amongst the factions all around her, Trist must find allies to help her in her quest to save the ones she loves, and solve the mystery behind Erudite’s uprising.
I am very ambitious and believe that with support from my family, friends from my village, colleagues, and the University I will be able to raise at least £1,000 for Barnardo’s. Barnardo’s is an incredible charity worthy of every last penny this sponsored skydive can raise. The money will improve the lives of vulnerable children throughout the UK which for an aspiring teacher is the best part about doing all of this. The sponsored skydive will take place at the Nottingham Airfield on the 28th April. If you are interested in supporting my skydive, please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/Ryan-Bray/ Or: You can email me at ryandavidbray@live.co.uk with your name, telephone number and address (if you would like me to personally collect your donation) I will write a column after the skydive to show how much it has managed to raise for the charity, so far (three days into starting the campaign for sponsors) I have managed to raise £65! Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
As war looms and tensions between the factions rise, it’s a race against time for Tris to find out once and for all what her family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the rulers of the Erudite faction will stop at nothing to hide the truth. Plagued by memories from her past, Tris and her comrade Four must battle forth seeking the truth about both their past and their future.

Free trees from Woodland Trust
CASH to Revive Empty Homes. (But be quick!) Dear All. Empty and derelict properties could be brought back to life thanks to a council funding pot.
THE WOODLAND TRUST sends out free trees every March and November to groups across the UK.
We have at Charnwood Borough Council around £45,000 up for grabs for homeowners looking for cash to prepare their property for the rental market.
Packs come in various mixes of 30, 105 or 420 saplings approximately 20-40cm tall. The charity wants to help school, youth and community groups bring people together to plant green shared spaces. It says that “Planting trees is also an ideal way of creating a beautiful, living tribute to those who have helped shape your local community.”
The Partnership Grant can be used to pay for essential work including re-wiring, new windows and doors and is designed to bring properties that have been empty for longer than six months back into use.
You can apply for multiple packs (e.g. 1x105 wild harvest, 1x30 copse, 1x30 hedge) up to a maximum of 420 trees per delivery season. Applications for packs to plant in November 2015 can be submitted online now until 3 September, while stocks last. Visit our website today for more information and help with how to apply. www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/plant-trees/in-yourcommunity.
The homeowner has to contribute towards the costs and also agree to rent out the property once the work is completed. “We would especially like to hear from owners of 2 bedroom properties because there is a shortage of these homes across Charnwood.
Weeks left to register to vote in May elections Charnwood residents are being urged to make sure they are eligible to vote in the May elections. The last chance to apply to register to vote is April 20, with applications for postal votes needing to be in by April 21. Charnwood Borough Council is asking residents to apply as soon as possible if they are not registered. If there are any problems with the application it could delay the process and residents might not be eligible to vote on May 7. A spokesman for Charnwood Borough Council said: “The way people register to vote has changed in the past year and the focus is on each individual, not household, to make sure they are eligible to vote. “Most people will have been automatically registered, but you need to check this out. “We would urge anyone who is not registered to vote to apply as soon as possible.” There is a General Election on May 7 as well as local elections for seats on Charnwood Borough Council. To check if you are on the electoral register, please call 01509 632593 / 632594 / 632595.
To register to vote, visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
“Our Housing team at CBC is committed to working with homeowners and landlords to ensure the private rented sector is the best it can be.” In the past five years, the Council has awarded four grants, worth a total of £40,000, to support people looking to revive homes. These have covered work including the installation of new windows and doors and replacement kitchens and bathrooms. A maximum of £15,000 can be awarded at once, to cover 50% of the cost of building and restoration work. This is good news, so please get in touch NOW! Part of the appeal is seeing the cars we drive every day (such as VW, Audi, BMW, Toyota, Honda and Ford), battle it out on-track. OTHER DONINGTON ATTRACTIONS
The race-track events (which even include truck racing) are interspersed with other attractions, such as the previously mentioned music festivals, and regular Sunday markets. There is also Tom’s ever growing Grand Prix Exhibition of historic racing cars. Further details can be found on the website www.donington-park.co.uk and for Touring Cars www.btcc.net
A BRIEF HISTORY OF DONINGTON PARK
Donington Park started life as a motorsport venue in 1931. In 1971 it was purchased by local businessman Tom Wheatcroft, and it has played host to the British Motorcycle Grand Prix (1987), and the Formula 1 European Grand Prix (1993), with racing legends Barry Sheene and Ayrton Senna gracing the track. His investment programme continues, ensuring world-class standards are maintained.

The 30-40,000 die-hard BTCC fans go racing in all weathers, but I hope the weather gods smile on Donington this year. The Burchnalls appear in the earliest baptism records of the parish and they were allotted nearly 50 acres in the Cropston enclosure. Their farmhouse, now known as White Lodge, had a brewery attached and they also owned an ale-house next door called the Brewer’s Arms. Brewing was a major occupation of the family, for better and worse! Richard Burchnall, who was born in 1784, had about ten children and Jane traced their varying fortunes. The March meeting of the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club was an illustrated talk entitled “Tulip Time” with bulb expert John Gibson. John is a member of the Royal Horticultural Societies Bulb Committee and has travelled extensively giving talks on his van!passion The– spring flowering bulbs.
Tulip bulbs are different to all others as ew DFSK each bulb forms a cluster of bulblets y its around name, the base every year and as these mical break away from the parent bulb they will usually take 3 to 4 years to reach maturity hicle.
and produce a flower, the old bulb gradually loses its vigour and rots away.
There are hundreds of tulips classified in 15 divisions based on flower form, the impressive range goes from the simple upright goblets of the single flowered tulips to the frilled and twisted petals of the Parrot tulips and the open double blooms of the Peony flowered forms.
Tulips on displays at a Spring flower show
They can all be conveniently grouped into 3 Tulips categories on flowering time, earlies, onbased displays at a Spring flowermid-season show and lates. Single earlies have the classic goblet shaped flowers traditionally used for cutting and formal bedding. Mid-season have the Triumph tulips with their simple conical blooms and the Darwin hybrids with rich and intensely coloured flowers. Late tulips have some of the most vibrant colours and intricate forms from the frilly edged Parrot varieties to the exuberantly stripped and feathered Rembrandts.
ectorate There are also the dwarf species and hybrids, most of them flowering in early spring, these are ideal for containers and rock gardens. John has visited the Dutch bulb fields a number of times and his g event. of the vast areas of tulips in flower were amazing, each colour in perfect stripes across the photographs value the landscape - the automatic planting machines guided by satellite navigation. This multi million st votes. pound industry of cut flowers and bulbs is a far cry from its humble beginnings as the favoured flower of the ctoral roll15th century Ottoman Empire. The talk ended with a ‘visit’ to the Keukenhof Gardens a massive 80 acres of park land divided into a om the variety of garden styles where over 7 million bulbs are planted each year.
The gardening club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall Whether an experienced gardener or an enthusiastic beginner we are sure you will something of interest in this year’s programme. New members are made most welcome. There are 12 events planned for 2015, including a trip to Waterperry Gardens in Oxfordshire. What’s more, it is excellent value!! The membership fee is £12 for the year or £3.00 per meeting. And, if you would like to come as a visitor and then you decide to join, your visitor fee will be refunded!! Film Presentations
From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council As March's film opened, we dropped into the colour and bustle of Mumbai. After a serious fire there, the Kadam family drove over the rolling fertile hills through France where they built a restaurant. Helen Mirren, as Madame Mallory, was not amused to see them only "One Hundred Foot" from her long established restaurant. The characters were so well cast in this delightful film which featured cooking with many surprises. “Mr Turner" will be shown on Friday April 10th and lasts 149 minutes. Timothy Spall actually learnt to paint to play the complicated character, JMW Turner. Spall certainly deserved the British Independent Film Award nomination for Best Actor and two awards at the Cannes Film Festival. There was also a nomination for a BAFTA in Cinematography. Turner spent years in London with his beloved father but he led an unusual life. He had a relationship with a Margate landlady, while his impressionist works of art caused wrath at the Royal Academy of Art. We see in this beautiful film how Turner created his masterpieces. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" will be shown on Friday May 8th and lasts 99 minutes. This film traces the history of the hotel from 1932 to the present day through the eyes of two lovers who are involved with a stolen painting. The characters are eccentric, with Bill Murray in a comic role and Ralph Fiennes performing brilliantly. Even the young lobby boy received an inheritance. Remarkably, this beautifully crafted comedy received four Oscar Awards and five BAFTA's. "The Theory of Everything" will be shown on Friday June 12th. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £5 and concessions are £4.50. There will be refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets can be purchased via the parish office - 0116 236 7626 or at the door.

APRIL IN THE GARDEN April is a busy month as it heralds the beginning of the growing season, and there is plenty to be getting on with. Now is the time to prepare the beds, incorporate farmyard manure or chicken pellets, of if you make your own compost and there is some ready then use that. Before it gets too warm and dry mulch perennials, shrubs and trees to try and conserve some moisture. Plant summer flowering bulbs such as Lilies and Gladioli. Herbaceous perennials can also be planted now, consider planting them in groups if the plants are small. If your herbaceous perennials need supporting then now is a good time to put the supports in place as it is easier to do this now rather than when the plants are larger. Direct sow hardy annuals into prepared beds. In the veg garden thin out carrot seedlings, if possible do this in the evening when the carrot fly is less active. Place twiggy supports on your rows of early peas. Some veg such as parsnips, radish and spring onions can be sown directly into your plot. Others such as brassicas, beans and sweetcorn should be started off under glass and gradually hardened off. Plant out strawberry plants, place cloches over them for an early crop. Start to sow tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers in a warm greenhouse. Plant up summer hanging baskets with small rooted cuttings and keep in the warm greenhouse. Prick out seedlings when they get their first true leaves. Pinch out the tops of fuchsias and sweet peas etc to encourage bushy growth. Now is a good time to reseed lawns. Make sure that the soil has been well prepared and keep it moist until the grass seed has germinated. If necessary apply a weedkiller to established lawns, mow as needed and aerate compacted areas with a fork or aerator. Keep an eye open for pests and diseases, prevention is better than cure. Clean paths and patios and dust off that garden furniture in anticipation of a glorious late spring and summer.

Newtown Linford Anstey W.I. - Army Dogs Gardening Club Hello Spring!! Daffodils and primroses are beginning to appear and we have even heard the sound of a lawnmower in recent days. There are buds appearing on some of our shrubs and it probably won’t be long before we see splashes of green appearing on our hedgerows. However we mustn’t do too much too soon – we can often have late frosts to catch us unawares. Nevertheless it’s lovely to see signs of our garden waking up again. April is the month of our Annual General Meeting and the date when our new programme for the year is launched. We have three trips planned this time. In May we go to Barraca Garden near Earl Shilton; in July we go to Norwell Nurseries near Newark and in August we go to the RHS garden at Hyde Hall in Essex. We have some prestigious speakers arranged for the coming year, some local and some from further afield. We have two celebrity speakers planned during the next twelve months. Chris Beardshaw, the gold medal garden designer and television favourite is coming in October and in March 2016 we welcome Andy McIndoe who is the MD of Hilliers Nurseries. Looking even further ahead, our celebrity speaker in October 2016 will be Fergus Garrett, who is head gardener at Christopher Lloyd’s famous garden at Great Dixter and renowned as a great speaker. How to obtain tickets for these events will be announced in the coming months, for we expect them to be very popular.
At the March W.I. meeting the members were visited by a four legged friend named Lucy who brought along two friends. These friends were Major Steve Leavis and Lance Corporal Katy Ord, all three of them from Melton Mowbray Defence Animal Centre, in other words, army personnel. The evening began with Major Leavis explaining to us the types of work that the dogs are trained for and that there are two types of work, protection and detection. The dogs that are trained for protection are the larger breeds such as Alsatians whilst the detection dogs are from the smaller breeds. The protection dogs are there basically for brute force whilst the detection dogs are trained to detect weapons, drugs, bombs, IEDs.
Lucy, an American gun dog, was a detection dog and was given the task of detecting some plastic explosives in Jubilee Hall which was such a minute amount covered in plastic and inside a wire cage – perfectly safe, except that a passing member of the public saw the van parked outside with 'Bomb Squad' on it and came into the hall to see if everything was alright. Lance Corporal Katy had served in Afganistan with Lucy as her handler and this report does not need to remind all of us how dangerous that was and the sacrifices that were made by many there. Lucy actually took a shine to our member Beryl Boyes who fed her a digestive biscuit. Oh dear. Major Steve Leavis nearly had a cardiac arrest at how Lucy was being spoilt and stated that she would need to be retrained. I think he was joking. This was an extremely interesting and jolly evening although we were all mindful of the seriousness of the work these dogs and their handlers undertake.
We have welcomed a large number of new members this year and will be pleased if others want to join us. If you are interested in our activities just contact the secretary (tel. 242452 or e-mail 01530242452@talktalk.net) , or come to one of our meetings to see how you like it before making a commitment (£2 for visitors). Alternatively give us a ring and ask for a copy of our programme for the coming year and we will be pleased to send one to you.

FRAUDULENT PHONE CALLS A lady phoned me yesterday to say that she had received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Police in London telling her that her visa card had been used fraudulently. She asked him for his name, which he gave but when she asked for his phone number so she could ring him back, he put the phone down. If you receive a similar phone call, please try and get as much

LEICESTERSHIRE NHW Leicestershire Neighbourhood Watch Association has just been re-hashed with an entirely new committee comprising, Chairman Eric Tindall, Vice Chair Stephen Bilbie, Secretary Susan Marlow and Treasurer Declan Chapman. Congratulations Susan on becoming secretary. There is another meeting being planned soon. Each NPA will have an executive committee and a designated Police Officer. PC Glenn Musgrove is the appointed Officer for Charnwood NPA. To meet with these new changes, the old North Area executive committee will be wound up and the new Charnwood executive committee will take over. This meeting will be taking place on Wednesday 27th May at the Jubilee Hall in Anstey and will replace the proposed AGM and become an EGM instead.
