John Sutherington Now Needs You!

16 to 30 years olds encouraged to “Spit for Sutty”

The problem is finding a suitable match to ensure that any transplant is successful and matching bone-marrow isn’t easy. Thankfully, the Anthony Nolan organisation are on hand to help us. We want to encourage all 16 to 30 year olds to attend this event and “Spit” (or, if you prefer, give a sample) into a jar to be checked to see if your bone-marrow matches with John’s. John has done more than anyone I know to help the residents of Anstey. He has been tireless in ensuring that any changes to the village have been beneficial.

Now it’s time to help him! If you are 16 to 30 years old and can spare time on the 9th of April to pop along to the Nomads ground to give a sample, then, for goodness sake, please do so. You may also be able to help other people around the country who find themselves in a similar position to John. You could be a Life-saver! For more information about the Anthony Nolan Trust, please see the article on page 20. Martin Broomhead – Chairman of Anstey Parish Council

Wednesday 9th April 3pm-8pm ey Anstey Nomads Ground, Cropston Road, Anst a lifesaver!

JUST TO NOTE IN ORDER TO REGISTER BY A SPIT SAMPLE YOU CANNOT DRINK/EAT/CHEW OR SMOKE FOR 30 MINUTES BEFORE, SO WE ALWAYS MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO DRINKS ETC IN REGISTRATION AREA, BUT AFTER THAT is FINE, AND IT IS ALWAYS GOOD FOR THE VOLUNTEERS, AND DONORS AFTER REGISTRATION.

She has been volunteering at the youth cafe for over a year and was nominated for a Pride of Charnwood award as Young Volunteer of the year by Go-Getta CIC in recognition of her commitment. She has been a positive peer role model and her input is invaluable in supporting local young people to build confidence, engage in positive activities and steer clear of crime. The youth cafe is led by the The Anstey neighbourhood watch scheme, they appreciate Ceri's help and her time which she offers to the cafe. Her peers are supportive of her and realise her talent. She works with them once a week for 3 hours, she has also attended the group camp which was run over a two days. She enjoys bringing out the best in the children she works with, her enjoyment of music is being transferred to these young people, she holds their attention and is held in high esteem within the group she plays with. To see her confidence grow and it has been wonderful to see a person who would not say much and keep herself to herself, blossom into a young lady who can hold a group's attention and keep them off the streets of the village by involving them with her love of music. Ceri is in her last year studying 'A' Levels at Longslade Community College, one of which is Photography, at which she is very talented, her ambition to be a professional fashion photographer drives her to study for a Photography Degree at De Montfort University.

Play with your Willow!!! Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club start the new cricket season at their Gynsill Lane ground with an home game on Saturday April 26th against Loughborough Greenfields 1.30pm start. New 1st X1 captain 18 year old Joe Harris (or youngest captain since Paul Edwards) is expecting a good season and is hopeful of getting his first game in charge with a win against what will be a strong Greenfield’s side who have been playing in the club league. This new Leicestershire Cricket league is part of the national pyramid system, so the sky is the limit… The 2nd X1 begin a week later with a home game against Braunstone Cricketers. Charlie Wilkes is again in charge for the foiurth consecutive year. Work on the pitch has been going on throughout the close season in the hands of Phil Hegginson and Derek Jordan with help from others, and looks in very wonderful condition. With a good ground, excellent changing facilities, insurance, good tea and lovely outlook to Bradgate parks “Old John” who could wish for more. Some people have however for one reason or another left the club to go elsewhere… Hmm! (Dummy and Pram!) Good to welcome back John Wright. Admission is free to all games but for just 50p you can purchase a cup of tea or coffee. Cokes 80p from Amanda or Tracy. There will be a game every Saturday from April 26th until the end of August. Why not come along, bring your deck chair, a few sandwiches and bottle of Tizer, and like every other cricket fan sit down and fall asleep!!! Outdoor nets at the ground will be starting at Gynsill lane when the clocks go forward. If you are interested in playing or helping in any way please get in touch. There are no age restrictions. It is hoped to bring Junior cricket back to A & G CC during the 2014 season, again please get in touch if you have a budding Stuart Broad or Alastair Cook. Unfortunately my playing days seem to be over after 51 years at the club, so if you do come down at any time to have a chat or reminisce, I should be there most Saturday’s thinking as all old cricketers do. I am sure it was better in my day. Howzat?

Georgie Raises Over £4000

You may remember back in our February edition we ran the story of Georgie Budding who on Monday 3rd March got her pony tail cut off and her head shaved in order to raise funds for research into the biggest cancer killer of UK children - Brain Tumours. The pony tail will be sent to the Little Princesses Trust to be made into wigs for children suffering the side effects of cancer treatment and the funds raised are being sent to Ellie's Fund Brain Tumour Trust - a charity Georgie does a lot for - who will send it over to the brain tumour research laboratory in Leeds. Georgie said “I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came and/or who donated” “We raised £454 on the morning of the headshave which added to our total which stands at over £4,000 now, It was a brilliant morning and the support we had was superb.”

POLICEMATTERS Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 19 February and 18 March 2014 inclusive. Unfortunately, the figures this period have shown a spike in Burglary Dwellings in the area. Whilst this is obviously a concern, it is not unusual to see a spike in crime such as this during the year as continuing Police operations throughout the city and county (such as the highly publicised Operation Tiger) ‘push’ criminals to operate in different areas. Having said this, the Charnwood Local Policing unit have acted swiftly to deter further crime in the village by allocating extra resources and patrols to the area and you may have noticed in particular a high volume of Police patrol vehicles around the village throughout both day and night. Of the burglaries that have occurred, there have been some key similarities that residents should be aware of. Firstly, all of the breaks have been made via rear or side entry doors being forced. This is therefore an opportunity to review your security and ‘assess’ your property from the point of view of the criminal; • Is there good security lighting around the property? • Are ground floor windows secured with good locks? • Is access to the rear of your property difficult or easy? (Dustbins left by fences to assist climbing etc) • Is the property left in complete darkness when you go out at night? • Are keys left in door locks? (don’t forget the criminal needs easy exit as well as entry)

Now should be a timely reminder to check your security.

4

Secondly, some of the burglaries have occurred whilst the property had been empty for a while whilst occupants were away. When leaving your property for long periods it is good practice to notify neighbours you are comfortable with informing that the property will be empty. Ensure regular checks are made at the property (to move any post from the floor etc) and to ensure that the house remains secure. Anstey is a very good community and it is at such times like this that the community comes together to watch over their neighbours. Whilst we are talking about security, we were fortunate enough after what seemed an eternity of ‘Rain, Rain, Rain’ to have some decent sunshine recently. Whilst enjoying the sun in your back garden or whilst ‘pottering’ around doing all those garden chores please don’t get complacent by leaving front doors unlocked or windows wide open.

Crime Figures 19th February 2014 to 18th April 2014 Burglary Dwelling – 7 Cropston Rd, Hollow Rd, Bradgate Rd, Sutherington Way, Birkdale Rd, Balladine Rd, Princes Cl Burglary (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage, Etc) - 2 Dalby Rd, Link Rd Theft of Motor Vehicle – 1 Gynsill Cl (Motorbikes x 2) Theft from Motor Vehicle - 1 (inc Attempts) – Hazlehead Rd Damage to Motor Vehicle – 1 Criminal Damage Dwelling – Link Rd Criminal Damage (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage Etc) – Anstey Methodist Church 1 Theft Store – 2 - Co-op Theft Cycle – 1 Tennis Courts (Stadon Rd Park) Theft Property - 1 - Edward St

Finally, we are getting to the season where a number of events take place around the village and we hope to see as many residents as we can as we attend these community events. If you would like to speak to your beat team before these events then please feel free to knock on our office door at the Jubilee Hall, Stadon Rd and we will be happy to have a chat. One event for your diary is the Car Boot sale being held at Anstey Martin High School on Sunday 11th March 1000 – 1500 on behalf of Friends of Martin High School. As always, we would ask all residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activity to Police on 101 or, if you feel a crime is taking place, 999. If you have any information at all about crime please call CRIMESTOPPERS. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not

just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Film Presentations From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council

In March we were introduced to Somali fisherman dominated by their war lords and to Captain Philips preparing his trading ship to travel from Oman to Mombasa. The desperate Somalis brandished automatic assault rifles in hijacking the trading boat and took Captain Philips hostage. The drama at sea was extremely exciting and Captain Philips was brave indeed. “Philomena” will be shown on Friday April 11th and lasts 134 minutes. This British film is a moving true story about one woman's quest to right a terrible wrong. Philomena is played remarkably by Dame Judi Dench. She and the journalist, played by Steve Coogan, form a beautiful relationship as he investigates her son's disappearance. "Sunshine on Leith" will be shown on Friday May 9th and lasts 100 minutes. This romantic comedy is an upbeat happy musical with many songs by the Proclaimers. Two friends return to Scotland from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. They again enjoy their girlfriends' company while Davy And Liz's parents celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. However, there emerges a dark secret from the past. "12 Years a Slave" will be shown on Friday June 13th. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £4-50 and concessions are £4. The price includes refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets can be purchased via the parish office - 0116 236 7626 or at the door.

ANSTEY WI

Several Anstey WI members attended the Leicestershire Federation of Women’s Institutes’ Annual Council meeting. They were able to admire the handiwork of other members, and shop at a variety of stalls selling crafts and home produce, as well as listening to three excellent speakers, one on the work of the RAF association. Peter Lien, head of the cookery school at the WI’s own Denman College in Oxfordshire, caused many hearts to flutter. A handsome, charismatic young man with down to earth views, his passion for cooking shone through his words. The first question at the end of his talk was “Do you give private lessons?” The flirtatious atmosphere was maintained when cartoonist Bill Tidy presented the trophies, kissing the cheeks of every recipient, before his talk, which was entitled “Great Women in History, and those who were equally good, but were ‘only the missus.’” As he spoke, he drew cartoons in a flash, producing impressive images with just a few strokes of a black marker, of men and women, and even a horse. His fantastic tales were hilarious. Our view of Moses receiving the ten commandments has changed forever! Shortly afterwards, a similar group went to the annual meeting of the Bradgate Group of WIs, hosted by Leicester Ladies, one of the new, urban institutes formed by young working women, so encouraging for the future of the movement. They enjoyed a talk by Sally Henshaw of the Richard III Society on the search for Richard’s remains, enjoyed a delicious supper of Leicestershire food, and had fun trying to identify the Leicester celebrities whose photographs were displayed around the room. At Anstey’s own meeting, they were addressed by Alan Gray, who titled his talk “You cannot be serious!” He first became interested in tennis when he saw an exhibition match involving four top players in his native Dundee. He even won a Scottish junior championship, but modestly pointed out that only three players entered. He then took up umpiring, which he called the saddest hobby known to man. He officiated at Wimbledon for 25 years, and gave his audience fascinating behind the scenes details. Among his essential equipment was a list of swear words in 11 languages, to the surprise of international players who thought they could get away with using obscene language! He brought along his Ralph Lauren designed uniform, which was very smart, but he hankered for the old purple and green.

Cropston Cricket Club News... With the weather improving it must mean that the cricket season is just around the corner. Cropston Cricket Club will once again be running junior coaching sessions on Friday evenings throughout the summer. The first session will be on Friday April 18th from 6.30 at our Waterfield Road ground (LE7 7HL). Sessions are open to both boys and girls aged 7 to 17. Our coaches are all ECB qualified and CRB checked. All equipment will be provided. We are running teams in the Leicestershire Youth League at Under 10,11,13,15 & 17. We also run two senior sides on a Saturday and one on a Sunday. The licensed clubhouse will re-open on Friday April 4 for registrations but don't worry if you can't make it on the 4th as we welcome new members at any time. Please contact Brad Peake on 07777 649412 or Ethan Hawkins on 07513 956954 for further details.

Gareth Williams and Glyn Edwards of the BREAKDOWN OF HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS IN ANSTEY SINCE 2000 ‘Save Anstey’ campaign recently attended the Charnwood Borough Core Strategy Anstey (Census 2001), existing dwellings 2427 Examination Event at the Loughborough By end of March 2013, an increase of 443 dwellings (316 on brownfield) 2870 Town Hall. The ‘Core Strategy’ in principal protects the majority of our green areas in the Borough until 2028 and if approved will Total dwellings approved but not yet built 222 be a massive step forward in our plight, all Total dwellings submitted for approval 346 the other authorities in Leicestershire back Total dwellings rumoured to be submitted 60 the plan. Unfortunately developers are determined to undermine the plan as they do not want it adopted as it will curtail their TOTAL DWELLINGS on Greenfield sites 628 plans for mass development in the Borough, Only 21 dwellings are on Brownfield sites if they are successful the Core Plan will be rejected and a new revised one will have to IF ALL APPROVED THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF DWELLINGS IN ANSTEY WILL INCREASE TO 3498 be created which will take 2/3 years and in the meantime developers will continue to Which is an increase of 44% since 2001 disregard our Greenfields and develop as the Council will have no plan to refer to and have to adopt the NPPF document which is in favour of sustainable development. Charnwood Officers are passionate about the Borough and are trying to protect it, the law states they must follow the NPPF document if they don’t, again the developers will simply ‘appeal’ any refusals and in the majority of cases, WIN. This costs the Council in time and money with legal costs etc. It is clear to them that if residents give the Council legitimate reasons to object piecemeal developments they will follow it through. It is not the Charnwood Borough Council that ‘Save Anstey’ are fighting but the relentless profit driven developers. Between 1st April 2000 and end March 2013, Anstey has seen 443 house completions of which 316 were on brownfield and 127 on Greenfield sites. Since 2000 to the very near future the size of Anstey could increase by 44% without any noticeable improvement in highways or amenities. An increase of 628 houses will add 1381.6 cars onto the road infrastructure, without any improvements (National average is 2.2 cars per household) it is a recipe for gridlock in our village. With very few brownfield sites remaining in the village which are more expensive to develop and not as vast in size, developers are now moving onto our Greenfields, bigger plots with bigger profits. Current Applications submitted to Charnwood Borough Council for Anstey P/13/2340/2 – 65/70 dwellings off of Cropston Road P/13/2263/2, P/13/2510/2 and P/14/0198/2 - Gynsill Lane Developments (97 dwellings, plus alterations to existing footpath) P/14/0428/2 – 160 dwellings at land surrounding Fairhaven Farm P/14/0494/2 – 19 Dwellings of Bradgate Road If you feel as passionate about our ‘village’ as we do please join the campaign to ‘Save Anstey’ www.saveanstey.co.uk or Facebook ‘Save Anstey’, contact us saveanstey@gwkw.co.uk

VALID OBJECTIONS: The rules of planning state that people can object to any of the following (if relevant): Building in the open countryside/green wedge Visual impact, height, mass, design Flooding

Example of how the letter can be written and issues you can raise. Dear Mr Smith Planning Application Number: P/14/0428/2 Location: Land off Cropston Road Anstey Leicestershire LE7 7GG

Road access Traffic generation Transport, parking access and road safety Nature conservation Privacy Overshadowing (i.e. decreasing availability of sunlight or daylight) Overbearing impact from development Permanent noise issues if granted Pollution (any type, including light) Trees and vegetation (excessive) Conservation Areas of outstanding natural beauty Visual amenity, loss of privacy (but not loss of personal view) Loss of trees Layout and density of buildings Design, appearance and materials Landscaping Local, strategic, regional planning policies Proposals in the development plan Previous planning decisions

INVALID OBJECTIONS

The following should not be used as they are not ‘Material considerations’ and are likely to result in the exclusion of any letter of objection if they are included. Effect on property value or property maintenance. Loss of view

As a local resident I strongly object to this application for a housing development. The reasons for my objection are: (The following are the main issues which the council takes into account when deciding a planning application. So make sure you include some or all of the following points and add any further comments of your own). Sustainability: The proposed development is not sustainable as the main mode of transport to get to local amenities (schools, doctors etc) will be by private car. Impact on the community and other services: This development will put even more strain on the local community and services. Comment on any particular concerns you have e.g. Impact on schools, community groups, doctors, dentists, parking. Increasing number of new houses in Anstey etc. Highways and Traffic: The changes suggested by Bloors to the Nook area could possibly only give marginal improvements in traffic flow, but the effects of other developments in process are not taken into account and so there would be an overall worsening of the chaotic severe traffic problems already encountered. On average this development will add a minimum of 352 more vehicles onto the highway infrastructure. Flooding: The village is affected by flooding, which is increasing year by year. Adding further non porous surfaces will inevitably push water that currently soaks into the fields elsewhere and add to flooding issues and road closures. Impact on local character: Cropston Road is predominantly 1920’s / 30’s houses. The development will be very visible from Bradgate Park, which is a natural place of beauty. Detrimental impact and loss of the rural feel. Loss of further Greenfield. Fairhaven is considered an ‘Area of Particularly Attractive Countryside, that should be protected’ Nature and wildlife conservation: Have you seen any badgers, otters, owls, bats? Any other species of wildlife. Effect on neighbouring properties: Privacy and noise etc.

Private covenants

4 Chances to win £5,000 for a hole-in-one Lingdale Golf Club at Woodhouse Eaves has come up with a unique plan for their charity open competition on Friday 9th of May this year. Entrants to their competition will have four chances in one round of golf to win a £5,000 cash prize if they score a hole-in-one on any of the courses par 3 holes. That means somebody on the day could walk away £20k richer! Event organiser Nick Viney say’s “This is the club’s third year of supporting The Harley Staples Cancer Trust and we wanted to create a very special and unique fund raising event, you often hear of a single prize for a hole in one but we will offer a big cash prize on all of our par 3 holes”

So far Lingdale have raised more than £20,000 for the Leicestershire charity who are fundraising to provide “Harley’s House”, a relaxing retreat where children with life threatening illness can spend time with their families when on breaks from hospital. Anyone that would like to enter a team and have a chance of winning £5k for a hole-inone can do so by either phoning Lingdale Golf Club 01509 890703 or enter online at the club website www.lingdalegolfclub.co.uk (then click open competitions tab) or if you would like to support The Harley Staples Cancer Trust through sponsorship of this event call Nick on 07785 927200.

Newtown Linford Gardening Club Is it really the beginning of spring? We still have had no snow and very few frosts. As we drive around the area there are daffodils in full bloom even though the snowdrops have not yet finished. We have also seen hedgerows showing the first sign of greening up and leaf buds appearing on several shrubs. Surely there will be something to bring us up short but, at the time of writing, there are no such signs yet. However much pruning is being done at this time, taking advantage of the rainless spells we are having at the moment, so the lull in gardening activity of the past months is coming to an end. After a packed evening learning all about the huge range of plants called ‘daisies’, plus some that look like daisies but aren’t, we turn our attention, in March, to fruit and vegetables. The full title for our speaker, David Thornton is ‘Healthy eating Aspects of Fruit and Vegetables’. David Thornton is a national expert on the subject. He is the long-serving secretary of the National Vegetable Society and we are privileged to be able to welcome such a prestigious speaker. We are holding a plant fair on Saturday April 26th at the Sunday School Rooms in Newtown Linford from 10.00am to 1.00pm. There will be a wide range of plants for sale and also home-made cakes. We welcome all comers to see what we have to offer. We can also give advanced notice of our celebrity event in the autumn. On November 4th Adam Frost will be coming to Newtown Linford. He has already won gold medals at Chelsea for garden design on four occasions (perhaps five by the time he comes to speak to us!!!) and is now one of the newly established experts in this subject. He appears on our screens at regular intervals and has a reputation as a fascinating speaker with an innovative gardening brain. As last time, when Christine Walkden came to our village we will invite members of other gardening clubs and interested visitors to join us. Put the date in your diary and look out for further details in the near future. We have welcomed a large number of new members this year and will be pleased if others want to join us. If you are interested in our activities just contact the secretary (tel. 242452 or e-mail 01530242452@talktalk.net) , or come to one of our meetings to see how you like it before making a commitment (£2 for visitors). Alternatively give us a ring and ask for a copy of our programme for the coming year and we will be pleased to send one to you.

Anne and David Couling

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate. Proposed Development Update. Again I have spent some of my time this month looking at the applications for proposed development within the Anstey Parish. Last month I asked residents through my report if they would let me have any photographs of the footpath from Gynsill Lane across the floodplain to Anstey village. I am grateful to all the residents who sent me their photographs. They enforce my view that due to flooding it would be difficult to make this a safe route to the Latimer Street Primary School throughout the year. I will be making my observations known through the planning consultation process to Charnwood Borough Council. The Cropston Road proposed development for up to 57 dwellings is moving closer to being determined. The County Council Highway Authority has recommended that this application should be refused. Stating “that the junctions of Cropston Road/Stadon Road /Bradgate Road/Leicester Road and the A46/ Leicester Road currently exhibit unacceptable levels of queuing and delay and the Highway Authority considers that the development if approved is likely to exacerbate these concerns to a severe level as set out in the National Planning Policy Framework". In my view this information will be very helpful when the decision is taken at Planning Committee at Charnwood Borough Council. It seems never ending with planning applications coming forward for the Anstey Parish. I understand the Bradgate Road application has been registered again with Charnwood Borough Council. This is now outline planning for a residential development for up to 19 dwellings which is a reduction from the previous application. Two More Updates. You may recall I was asking Charnwood Borough Council if part of the Nook Car Park could be restricted to a maximum of two hours. I understand this is still progressing through the legal requirements and should be installed later this year. It is proposed to have two hourly parking on the first 15 parking spaces on the left hand side as you enter the car park. I was pleased to see that money has been included in the budget to complete the work. I am grateful to the Parish Council for giving me information about the passenger usage on the late night bus service into Anstey. You may

recall this was a joint project between the Parish Council and the County Council Big Society Fund. It seems the passenger numbers throughout the trial period has been very low. Therefore it may be that the bus company will cancel this service when they next review their network routes as it seems this service will not be commercially viable. Traffic Calming Measures. The traffic calming measures on Bradgate Road / Groby Road, Anstey are near completion. I have had some favourable comments about the scheme, especially the pedestrian crossing at the Crown Pub, taking out the barrier near to Falcon Road and the speed table at the junction of Bradgate Road/Groby Road. I am told this has been an improvement for vehicles turning onto Bradgate Road. Concerns have been raised about the barrier outside the Crown Pub and the speed tables not slowing the traffic down enough as they are too shallow. I understand when the scheme is fully completed checks will be made on current speeds along Bradgate Road to see how effective the scheme has been. I also believe the resurfacing of the footpath between Pettifor Court and the Church has also added to the improvements in this area of Anstey. I have also been involved with the Traffic Group in the Woodhouse Parish asking a question to the County Council Scrutiny Committee about a review of speed restrictions within the Parish. I know the group are still progressing this and I have had a further meeting with them to look at ways to progress this item. Parking in Newtown Linford. The recent excellent weather on Sunday 9th March brought an unprecedented level of visitors to Bradgate Park. Unfortunately this caused severe problems within the village because vehicles were parked illegally and irresponsibly on verges, double yellow lines, footways and bends in the road causing highway safety issues. I believe we have seen an increase in the times this is happening during the year. Therefore I have asked officers at Charnwood Borough Council if arrangements can be made to make sure Street Wardens are available to patrol the village when good weather is forecast, especially on a Sunday. I have also asked the County Council to conduct a review of the

parking restrictions throughout the village. I have already received a petition to extend the double yellow lines between the Sunday School and Marion’s Cottage close to the entrance to Bradgate Park. There is also a need to repaint some of the existing double yellow lines. Pride of Charnwood Awards. As Chairman of the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership I was delighted that we were able to to fund this award ceremony for the third year running. The Pride of Charnwood Awards recognise the achievements of the young people living in the Borough and are run by the Charnwood Youth Council. it was particularly pleasing for me this year to see one of the winners from Anstey, Ceri Oxman. Ceri was recognised for her excellent voluntary work with the Anstey Youth Cafe. Congratulations to Ceri and thank you for helping the young people of Anstey through the excellent work you do at the Youth Café. Making Residents’ Views Count. Charnwood residents are being invited to join a Virtual Citizens' Panel to let Charnwood Borough Council know what they think of its future plans. The Council is looking for as many Charnwood residents as possible to join the panel to represent the Borough's diverse population. Members will be invited to complete surveys - online or post - giving their views on a range of topics from bin collections to Council Tax. The vital feedback from the panel will help shape Council services now and in the future. For further information contact communications@charnwood.gov.uk visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/ pages/citizens_panel or call 01509 634989 If you need to contact me on any issues write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. APRIL April is a busy month as it heralds the beginning of the growing season, and there is plenty to be getting on with. Now is the time to prepare the beds, incorporate farmyard manure or chicken pellets, of if you make your own compost and there is some ready then use that. Before it gets too warm and dry mulch perennials, shrubs and trees to try and conserve some moisture. Plant summer flowering bulbs such as Lilies and Gladioli. Herbaceous perennials can also be planted now, consider planting them in groups if the plants are small. If your herbaceous perennials need supporting then now is a good time to put the supports in place as it is easier to do this now rather than when the plants are larger. Direct sow hardy annuals into prepared beds. In the veg garden thin out carrot seedlings, if possible do this in the evening when the carrot fly is less active. Place twiggy supports on your rows of early peas. Some veg such as parsnips, radish and spring onions can be sown directly into your plot. Others such as brassicas, beans and sweetcorn should be started off under glass and gradually hardened off. Plant out strawberry plants, place cloches over them for an early crop.

Start to sow tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers in a warm greenhouse. Plant up summer hanging baskets with small rooted cuttings and keep in the warm greenhouse. Prick out seedlings when they get their first true leaves. Pinch out the tops of fuchsias and sweet peas etc to encourage bushy growth. Now is a good time to reseed lawns. Make sure that the soil has been well prepared and keep it moist until the grass seed has germinated. If necessary apply a weedkiller to established lawns, mow as needed and aerate compacted areas with a fork or aerator. Keep an eye open for pests and diseases, prevention is better than cure. Clean paths and patios and dust off that garden furniture in anticipation of a glorious late spring and summer.

Thurcaston and Cropston Garden Club Leicestershire RSPCA First Car Boot Sale The Garden at Coton Manor by Caroline Tate Caroline Tate is the nursery manager of Coton Manor Gardens, a position she has grown into from origins as a post university volunteer. Her photos and commentary of life at Coton Manor, took us on a journey through the seasons, and the decades of this lovely garden that is a popular visiting place for Leicestershire garden lovers. The current owners are the third generation to inherit the garden. The gardens are open for six months in the year from the spring time displays of hellebores and blue bells, through the rich varieties of summer flowering borders, and into autumn displays.

A view of Coton Manor and the area that was once the rose garden

Caroline made the point that the garden at Coton had evolved over many years. Because gardening at Coton is on a large scale, they work hard at colour combinations and succession. They also use repeat planting in long borders as a technique. There are many different areas and aspects to Coton which creates opportunities for different types of plants and different planting styles. These include woodland areas, perennial borders, wild flower meadow, herb garden, an area that was once a rose garden, and a large lake. Many plants have been in the family for generations, and care is taken to maintain this stock through cuttings. This particularly applies to the excellent range of pelargoniums, displayed each year in terracotta pots. Another interesting feature of the garden is the collection of wildfowl, which includes flamingos.

The recently created herb garden at Coton

Leicestershire RSPCA will be holding their first Car Boot Sale of the year at the Woodside Animal Centre at Scudamore Road, Leicester on Saturday the 12th of April from 11am to 3pm. There wil be some 50 stalls with lots of bargains and RSPCA goods for sale, the animal housing will be open, ice cream and refreshments will be available and the Woodside pet shop will be open as will the toilets on site. To make sure of a pitch ring Rebecca on 0116 2336677 or Ken in the evening on 0116 220 7552 to book one.

The garden at Coton can be enjoyed at different times of the year, as can the excellent café. Indeed, the café comes A perennial border at Coton with a health warning because the cakes are often too good to resist! This illustrated talk by Caroline was very well received. Caroline had an enthusiasm and passion for Coton and a manner and style that members warmed to.

The gardening club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall Whether an experienced gardener or an enthusiastic beginner we are sure you will something of interest in this year’s programme. New members are made most welcome. The membership fee is £12 for the year (pro-rota) or £3.00 per meeting. And, if you would like to come as a visitor and then you decide to join, your visitor fee will be refunded!! So, if you are interested in gardening - come and give the Club a try.

The animal centre needs over £12,000 a week to cater for the increasing number of abused, injured, cruelly treated and abandoned animals. Please give them your much need support . They are also pleased to receive items for the sales or their four charity shops. They are planning to hold two more car boot sales on the 14th of June and 16th of August so put these in your diary.

Leicester Marathon returns303 for 2014 with an emphasis on raising 0303 0303 money for local charities. The date for 2014’s Leicester info@anthonynolan.org Marathon has been officially confirmed this week by the www.anthonynolan.org organising team. The event will take place on Sunday 26th October, and will start from Victoria Park at 9.15am. Registered charity number 803716/SC038827 After the success of combining multiple running events in previous year, the 2014 event will provide opportunities for all ages and ability of runner. There will be a full 26.2 mile marathon as well as a half marathon, relay races and a fun run. The organisers want to encourage everybody to get involved as either a runner or spectator. Last year, 2,500 runners took place in the city centre event, raising an estimated total of £70,000 for charities. This year’s event will focus on raising as much money as possible for the race’s partners, so runners are being actively encouraged to participate as part of a charity team. Participating charity runners will be able to take part for free. LOROS, Bamboozle Theatre Company and St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice are amongst the charities taking part and asking runners to raise money for their charity in return for a place. The charities will be hosting designated cheering points along the route where spectators supporting charity runners will congregate, giving runners that much needed boost during their run. “We really appreciate the support of those giving up their time and raising money for the race’s charity partners,” comments race director Christian Weikert-Picker, “This year’s event is designed to get all sorts of people involved, raise awareness of the work of such important charities, and encourage people to get active and to get fundraising.”

The Anthony Nolan Organisation is Helping John Sutherington As outlined on the front page, John Sutherington is in need of a bone marrow transplant. He’s been in hospital for some time but is now healthy enough to undergo a bone marrow transplant but we need to find a matching donor.

The cancer charity, the Anthony Nolan, is searching worldwide registers to find a matching donor for John. The charity, now in its 40th anniversary year, saves the lives of people with blood cancers and disorders by matching remarkable people willing to donate their bone marrow to patients in desperate need of a transplant. John says, “Without a matching donor, I won’t be able to have a transplant. I didn’t realise before how important it is that people join the bone marrow donor register. I’m hoping that there is someone out there who is a match for me. We are holding the recruitment event so that local people have the opportunity to join the register. If someone who joins comes up as a match for me that would be great, but they could be a match for anyone who needs a transplant so it’s really important that people join.” John’s friends and family are organising a recruitment event with Anthony Nolan to encourage local young people to sign up as donors. People aged 16-30 can join the bone marrow donor register by simply filling in a form and providing a saliva sample. Local residents can sign up at the event or online at www.anthonynolan.org The event details are:

Wednesday 9th April - 3pm-8pm The Anstey Nomads Football Ground Anstey, Leicester, LE7 7BP Sarah Roulstone, Regional Register Development Manager at Anthony Nolan, says, “When someone needs a bone marrow transplant, it is usually their best chance at survival. We need more people to step forward as donors so that we can find matches for people in need of a transplant. What many people don’t realise is just how simple it is to be a donor. Registering as a donor simply involves providing a saliva sample. If you are found to be a match for someone like John, the donation procedure is usually similar to giving blood.”

Re-Live The Final Days Of King Richard III With New Audio Tour Of Key Locations In Leicester and Leicestershire A new audio tour has been developed to help visitors re-live the story of King Richard III’s final days in Leicester and Leicestershire. The launch of this new tour follows the discovery of the remains of King Richard III - the last Plantagenet King of England - in Leicester, announced by the University of Leicester, Leicester City Council and the Richard III Society in February 2013. The audio tour tells the story of King Richard III’s life and death in Leicester and Leicestershire through a number of fictional characters. It features key locations throughout the city and county including Bow Bridge, Greyfriars, the former site of the Blue Boar Inn, The Newarke, Ambion Hill, Kirby Muxloe Castle, Bradgate Park, Bosworth Battlefield and Donington le Heath. The tour is free to download onto smartphones and tablet devices via iTunes or by using QR codes on the new King Richard III interpretation panels across the city, at Bosworth, Donington le Heath and Kirby Muxloe Castle, online at www.visitleicester.info, www.storyofleicester.com, www.goleicestershire.com and websites for Bosworth Battlefield, Donington le Heath, Bradgate Park and Kirby Muxloe Castle, as well as from the Visit Leicester centre in Leicester. Funded by Arts Council England, this audio tour has been produced as part of the Unlocking Leicestershire museum project by Leicester Shire Promotions, in partnership with Leicester City Council and Leicestershire County Council. Martin Peters, Chief Executive of Leicester Shire Promotions said: “The discovery of the King’s remains in Leicester has significantly boosted the public’s interest in this dramatic story and over 150,000 people have visited the temporary exhibition in the city during 2013. The new audio tour gives a unique perspective on the fascinating story of his final days

including the Battle of Bosworth at which he met his fate.” City Mayor Peter Soulsby said: “The story of Richard III’s life, death and subsequent rediscovery is an extraordinary one that deserves to be shared with the largest possible audience. “This new audio tour is a great way for people to find out about a fascinating period in Leicester’s history by encouraging them to visit the city and county landmarks that help bring Richard’s story to life.” Richard Blunt, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet member for culture, said: “There’s always been a compelling story to tell at Bosworth and the audio tour I’m sure will enhance the experience for visitors to our battlefield heritage centre.” A new £4 million Richard III Visitor Centre is scheduled to open later in 2014. The centre will house a breathtaking new exhibition, entitled ‘Richard III: Dynasty, Death and Discovery' which will guide visitors through the dramatic story of the king's life, brutal death at Bosworth Field in 1485 and the fascinating story of his rediscovery.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hello everyone, well I am finally out of hospital, for the time being at least? After 5 weeks being pretty poorly I’m afraid. In a room on my own with no TV, Radio, shaving point, mirror or even curtain! But thankfully my computer, mobile phone and the wonderfully caring medical staff on Ward 41 Osborne building LRI kept me going. I came back to some new traffic calming on and around Bradgate Road, Anstey and yet still more planning applications on the way. It’ll be a long haul trying to get what we want and don’t want for Anstey and its surroundings. But if we stay together like we did over the proposed Itinerants site down Anstey Lane going to Thurcaston many years ago who knows what we can achieve? *HELP! Please read last piece of article if you already getting tired!!! Thanks JJS. SKELLY sails away. A good friend, former parish councillor and certainly an Anstey character Alan Skelson sadly passed away on Christmas Day but not before a hearty “Dave Ford” Christmas Lunch at the Church Rooms Anstey. I did go to wish everyone including Alan a Happy Christmas and New Year. Unfortunately with “Skelly” it was not to be. I understand he was given a good send off at a service at Anstey Methodists followed by refreshments etc. Well supported by family, friends and some old mates from the Royal British Legion. Those Friday nights at the Old Hare and Hounds with Hilda Widdowson on the piano along with accompaniment from Maurice Bramley and Co will go down in Anstey Folklore!! Lyrics long forgotten but mostly unprintable anyway? What do WE want for ANSTEY. In the event we do get all these planning applications passed then there will be contributions from developers, these can be quite substantial sums of money so what would YOU like to see in the village that will contribute to a better way of living for us all?, A sort of You want these houses but we want XXX Let me know. Personally I’d love to see a big increase in “proper” sports and recreation facilities, instead of having to make do.

ALLEN Mary Rose, The Conservative Party Candidate, 419 Votes COWLES Marilyn Susan, Labour Party Candidate, 355 Votes A majority of 89. Simon only 32, played for Anstey at Cricket when he was younger. Anstey Car Park repairs etc. At last some repair work has been done on the Car park at Anstey, it’s taken a bit of badgering to officers at Charnwood but we’ve got there. Perhaps a few more will now understand the one way system we have? “The repairs were done to ensure their long term viability and therefore the vitality of the local economies they are serving” said head of finance at Charnwood Mr. John Casey. *Keep going? Council Tax frozen again. Charnwood Borough Council has been able to keep its part of the Council Tax at the same rate for the 4th year running, but planned cuts and increased rents on the council properties, garages and its 22 shops are to go ahead. The average rent paid for a council property is to increase by £3.41 to £73.12 per week. (A rise of 4.9%) while garages and shops will increase by 3.15%. All this, according to our Mr Casey head of finance at CBC is set using a formula outlined by central government. The Charnwood base rate for a band D property will remain at £102.62. Additional charges can of course be made by the County and parish councils, Police and Fire. Flood victims UK. Cancelled. Lindzi Hargrave has been in touch with me about a Fun Run event she had planned for Saturday May 10th 2014 in aid of the UK flood victims. The idea was to provide as many households as possible with vouchers so they could replace something damaged i.e. curtains/ carpet etc.

Lib Dem100% increase!! The recent by-election at Birstall Wanlip saw a Lib Dem gain from the Conservatives which put us back on the map in Charnwood and 100% increase in representation within the borough! (From one to two.) The detailed results were:

Lindzi was, as I was very excited about the venture and hoped it would be a great success? How wonderful it would be to help others here in the UK, in their time of need? But guess what? The proverbial red tape, insurance etc. as now prevented her from having this event. However she is determined to do something to help others. Anyone with any good ideas that don’t get wrapped up in legal stuff? ~You can find Lindzi at Lindzi13@Live.com or on: 07725 250 569.~

NEW MAYOR Congratulations to my fellow councillor Cllr. Paul Day who will be Charnwood’s next Mayor. He will take up the role at the Annual Council meeting held at Loughborough town hall on May 12th. Paul is currently the Deputy Mayor and will take over from Cllr. Sandie Forrest. Councillor Ron Jukes who currently represents Loughborough Outwards is set to take on the role of Deputy. The Mayor acts as the principal ambassador of the council, presides over full council meetings, welcomes distinguished guests and will attend somewhere in the region of 500 engagements throughout the mayoral year. Good luck to Paul and his wife Pauline. And Finally ME… *Hopefully you will find elsewhere in your “LOCAL” and in much more detail, that down at Anstey Nomads FC on Wednesday April 9th between 3pm & 8pm they will be holding tests to see if a bone marrow match can be found for me. “SPIT FOR SUTTY!” The clubhouse will be open to all for tea, coffee and maybe a cake or two to help raise money for the Anthony Nolan Organisation who will be running the event on my behalf. Go on “Just Do It” Thank you to all those who have been in touch over the last few weeks and especially to those who are now arranging this event. Not just for me but anyone else who YOU may be a match for. Yours Sincerely.

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY Monday 10th March was an “action packed” event for the Club commencing with the long awaited 2nd talk given by Mr Brian Kibble on the life and times of Anstey from the “1800s to the present day”. Once again we were treated to extensive information supported by beautifully preserved photographs of long gone shops, factories and buildings but of which a few had retained their recognisable exteriors. Anstey had always been a hub of small diverse industries which have blossomed into major companies covering Tannery, Dairy products, Brewery and famous Wall Paper creations. Many of the photographs provoked memories from the Membership as they gradually came up to date. This talk was followed by a Free Raffle consisting of a box of Marks and Spencers Guest Soaps, which was won by Mrs. Diane Rouse . We then celebrated the 60th Diamond Wedding Anniversary for Mr and Mrs. Silvester (Madge and Dennis). Madge had brought along two beautifully cooked and decorated sponge cakes, one in vanilla and the other Chocolate which were very quickly and gratefully consumed!! Sincere Congratulations to you both. Lastly a very appreciative presentation of Gardening Vouchers were given to Mr David Rouse and Mr Mick Whatton who have, over the last ten years, been the “stage hands” supporting the Monday Club and their wives Diane (Catering) and Diana (Sales table)

Is Your Local School a SCoRE School? Get practical support and guidance on energy efficiency from Leicestershire County Council. The Schools Collaboration on Resource Efficiency (SCoRE) is a 12 month practical programme which helps schools reduce energy bills and save money. Advice and guidance is given on energy efficiency, including adjusting boiler times and temperatures, switching off lighting and electrical equipment and draft proofing. SCoRE supports many aspects of the curriculum including geography, science, maths, design and citizenship. Students are encouraged to be part of the programme and work with staff to achieve the best savings. Manor High School, Oadby has also taken part in the scheme. Their electricity consumption was reduced by 12%, and despite a cold winter, their gas usage relative to other years, was also reduced. Paul Clarke, site manager and Liam Powell, head teacher worked to apply the SCoRE principles across the whole school community and achieved savings of £9,400. Nichole Browne, School Environment Officer, Leicestershire County Council, said: “Applications for the next phase of the SCoRE programme are being taken now, and we look forward to working with a new set of schools. Schools can make significant savings on their energy use. From 16-22 June, we’re encouraging people to spend a night under the stars to find out which creatures they share their homes with, and raise money to help protect wildlife. UK wildlife will play host to all kinds of campers – adventurous campers will be building and sleeping in dens and shelters, some will stick to the traditional tent, while others plan to sleep on their garden trampoline. To help people get the most out of their wild night out, we’ve produced a free fundraising pack full of fun ideas to make raising money really easy. For those who don’t have a garden, the RSPB is also organising some exciting Big Wild Sleepout events across the UK. With special night time activities like outdoor cooking, stories round the campfire and night-time strolls, all events are different and a full list is available on the RSPB website rspb.org.uk/sleepout The Big Wild Sleepout is part of the RSPB’s ‘Giving Nature a Home’ campaign, which is aimed at inspiring everyone to do their bit for nature, wherever they live and however big their outside space. So grab your friends and family for a sponsored sleepout in your back garden and be part of the RSPB’s biggest fundraising event to help give nature a home. The Big Wild Sleepout is being supported by Blacks, the leading outdoor equipment specialist.

HS FOOT CARE SERVICES THE STORY HS Foot Care was started in 2008 by Alan Postlethwaite, following in the foot steps of deceased Mother-in-Law Inge Kropp. Alan initially trained with the Alliance of Private Sector Practitioners at the college in Blackheath near Birmingham then went on to study biomechanics, also with the Alliance and 3 other organisations – learning different techniques. The focus then was general foot care and Biomechanics - gait analysis and making corrective orthotics (insoles). Orthotics were originally made by sending a prescription to a lab in Northampton but in order to gain control of the manufacturing process and improve timeliness, he invested in the world class SIDAS system allowing onsite manufacture the same day of analysis. Daughter Maxime then embarked on her Podiatry degree at Southampton University. Meanwhile having developed techniques in treating ingrowing toenails Alan decided he wanted to do more – nail surgery. It was apparent that in order to treat patients who had private medical insurance and also to inject patients in order to perform surgery HCPC (Health & Care Professions Council ) registration was needed – and that now only comes after attaining a Podiatry degree. So Alan started his first year of the degree at Northampton University as Maxime entered her final year at Southampton. The surgery proudly displays the ‘three generations’ certificates with Mrs. Kropp’s in center place School of Surgical Chiropody signed in 1954!

Become a ‘Crimestopper’ in Leicestershire Keep your community safe and show that crime really does matter Independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers is appealing for enthusiastic members of the public to join its volunteer team in Leicestershire and Rutland, and support the fight against crime in the county. The charity last month launched a national discussion on key crimes affecting the UK public and is now seeking out willing individuals to join its growing family of crime fighters. In Leicestershire alone, 1681 pieces of useful information about crime were received by Crimestoppers in the year 2012/13 leading to 152 arrests. Whether your expertise is in business, the media, or maybe even fundraising, we’d love to hear from you – all we ask is that you have a passion for your local area and you share the same vision as we do – that everyone deserves to live in a community free of crime. East Midlands Regional Manager, Kiran Dhanda, said: “Volunteering for Crimestoppers is a great way to make a difference and I’m really looking forward to growing our team to make Leicestershire and Rutland safer places to live and work.” “You can dedicate as much or as little time as you like – every little helps and your efforts will be rewarded with the satisfaction that you are playing a part in keeping your community safe.” "Roles could be anything from working with local businesses to gain financial support to promoting our Fearless message to 11-16 year olds. We are also keen to hear from anyone who might be interested in taking on Treasury or Secretarial roles.” "Any help would be greatly appreciated. You really could make a difference.'' Crimestoppers is an independent charity which helps the police to solve crimes, making communities safer. It does this by operating the 24/7 telephone number 0800 555 111 which people can ring to pass on information about crimes anonymously. They can also use our ‘giving information’ form via our website www.crimestoppers-uk.org. Around 20 people are arrested and charged every day as a result of information given to Crimestoppers. If you are interested in becoming a Crimestoppers volunteer in Leicestershire and Rutland, please visit www.crimestoppers-uk.org/volunteer or call 020 8835 3700. APRIL’S NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW CONGRATULATIONS I would like to congratulate Susan Marlow for her achievement on being named the Leicestershire Police Volunteer of the year. Susan got this reward for her work at Beaumont Leys Police station identifying public concerns about crime and anti-social behaviour. She organised crime-prevention days and set up an information shop at Beaumont Leys shopping centre. Susan is the NHW coordinator for Edward Street. Second congratulations go to Ceri Oxman for winning the Creativity Award at the recent Pride of Charnwood youth awards. Ceri won it for the way she presents her love of singing and playing the guitar and her photography. Ceri is one of the volunteers at the Anstey Youth Cafe. Well done to you both. CRIMESTOPPERS I was very lucky to be invited to the Midlands Regional Crimestoppers convention, held last week at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham. Attending the event were the Leicestershire

and Warwickshire Police Chief Constables together with PCC’s. It was very interesting to hear all the different views from the PCC’s and how Crimestoppers work closely with and are valued by the Chief Constables. Crimestoppers is an independent charity (and do NOT work for the Police). You can call anonymously to report a crime, or if you see something or someone acting suspiciously, free on 0800 555 111. You may be eligible for a reward. You can also report online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org. They are looking for volunteers in Leicestershire and Rutland, please see the website for details. NEW AREAS TO BE COVERED I will be out and about again soon setting up new NHW schemes in Anstey. If you would like the area where you live to have a scheme or would be interested in becoming a coordinator please get in touch. We now have about 85% of Anstey in a NHW scheme. We do have some schemes where we are urgently seeking new coordinators where the previous ones have resigned for various

reasons. Please don’t miss out. Volunteer today. WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS A charity called Think Jessica (www.thinkjessica.com) has produced a booklet which provides a lot of useful advice about scams.
