The past 6 months of 2015 have been fun and very busy for our playgroup at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. We have seen many new parents, carers and grandparents and formed many new friendships. The age of our young attendees has varied from 1 month old to 4 years of age and all have been kept busy playing no matter what the age. We have painted, coloured, played with dress-up and cars and put together many puzzles. Our younger attendees have been kept busy on the baby mats.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not

just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Your Local MP Edward Argar... Email: edward.argar.mp@parliament.uk Edward Argar MP, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA Welcome to the first (slightly lengthy on this occasion), of what I hope will be many contributions to this Magazine as your Member of Parliament. Firstly, thank you very much for electing me as your MP. Regardless of how you voted I will always endeavor to assist you when you seek my help, and to work for the whole community – it has been an incredibly busy and active two months in the constituency and in Parliament since being elected, and it is a pleasure and privilege to serve the people of the Charnwood constituency. Parliament has now started its summer break, but that doesn’t mean the work stops! The letters and casework still flow in, but the break in parliamentary business means more time to get around even more events and meetings back home here in Charnwood. Please do let me know if there are any community events you are organising over the summer that you’d like me to come to. I am already working with your hard-working Councillors Debs Taylor, David Snartt and John Sutherington, and locally have been focused on improving the traffic situation in the centre of Anstey and tackling speeding issues through Woodhouse and Woodhouse Eaves, supporting your local Councillors in their work to get more community volunteers to help run Anstey Library from October (if you are keen to volunteer please get in touch with Cllrs Taylor or Sutherington who can connect you with the right people) and discussing with Cllr Sutherington how best we can all work

together to support local clubs, like Anstey Nomads Football Club, improve their facilities, and I am planning to re-visit Maplewell Hall School, and visit the Latimer School in Anstey, and St Paul’s Primary in Woodhouse Eaves when term resumes to see for myself the great work they do……but I am always open to more invitations, or local causes you feel I can support you with, so do get in touch! Reaching the end of the ‘summer term’ has given me the opportunity to reflect on the first couple of months as an MP. As well as dealing with the casework and many hundreds of letters and emails each week and setting up a parliamentary office from scratch (for the first month or so newly elected MPs have no office and telephone, and only get a locker and the hope of finding an empty desk in a corridor or Committee Room!) there has been a very busy schedule in the Chamber of the Commons, with legislation, statements, and questions. It has often been said that Parliament is a little like Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter books and films, and there is a bit of truth in this but it is also a wonderful place in which it is a privilege to sit as your MP, with a lot of important work to do. And, despite the seemingly odd traditions, it does work as a forum for real debate. In the weeks since I was elected I have spoken on over a dozen occasions, most recently in the Budget debate. When Parliament returns in September I will be leading a debate on a subject that affects many in our community,

In addition to my routine MP surgeries, I also aim over the summer to hold a series of local surgeries in each of the villages, including in the Jubilee Hall in Anstey on 26th September, as well as in Newtown Linford, Woodhouse Eaves, Cropston & Swithland to make it easier for you to come and see me and your local Councillors, - we will publicise more details in due course. I look forward to meeting many of you over the coming months, and in the meantime I wish you all a very happy and pleasant summer, & hope to see many of you in the course of it!

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate.

Grass Cutting Update for 2015. I attended the Charnwood Highway Forum meeting where the arrangements for grass cutting for this year were outlined. The frequency of urban highway grass cutting (within Towns and Villages) has been reduced down to five cuts per year. This compares to 6 cuts undertaken during 2014 cutting season. The revised frequency is based on the outcome of public consultation exercise. The reasons for the reductions is due to the significant reductions in funding for local government that are needed in order to deliver the Government’s austerity measures. It is also worth noting Leicestershire receives a lower amount of funding per head of population than almost all other County Councils which makes the financial position particularly problematic and Councillors continue to lobby Government Ministers on this issue. I understand two Parish Councils within my Division, Anstey and Thurcaston and Cropston, have chosen to undertake the urban grass cutting within their area, therefore they do have the option to provide additional cuts at their own expense.

North West Transport Project. If you have travelled recently by County Hall you would have seen work has started on the first stage of a multi-million pound project to improve the road links into the City from the north west part of Leicester. The major part of the work is along the A50 from the A46 Western Bypass into the City. The scheme, which is run jointly by the City and County Councils will improve the main junctions with wider lanes and better signalling. When work is completed we will see amongst other things: Benefits for businesses as a result of better journey times and reliability for employees and delivery vehicles: Reduced congestion at the key junctions with better traffic flows into and out of the City as well on the ring road.

Combined Authority. You may have heard through the local media, the plans to create a combined authority with the full support of the City, County and District Councils, to improve how the councils collaborate and deliver on key issues. These areas of business include economic growth, skills, transport and planning. The establishment of a combined authority will provide robust governance which will help to create jobs and make more decisions locally. Initial proposals have been jointly submitted by the Leader of the County Council and the City Mayor to the Secretary of State. It is hoped that Government will see this as a positive contribution to their devolution agenda. Further work is underway to support the development of a final proposal, which will be submitted to the Secretary of State later this year, with a view to a combined authority being set up by the end of 2015. I will keep you informed on how this exciting initiative is developing through the coming months.

Battle of Bosworth Anniversary Re-enactment. Each year the County Council stages a special weekend of re-enactment at Bosworth Battlefield. With the return of the mortal remains of King Richard 111 in March, ahead of his reinterment in Leicester Cathedral still fresh in the memory, it is anticipated that there will be a high level of interest from the public. This year the re-enactment weekend coincides exactly with the anniversary on the battle held on 22nd August, and so this year the event will incorporate the traditional Laying of Roses ceremony, which I shall be delighted to host.

The County Council’s Links with the Armed Forces. As Chairman of the County Council I am pleased to report I have been able to accept a number of invitations on behalf of the County Council to events that have sought to maintain and develop the County Council’s strong relationship with her Majesty’s Armed Forces. Within the county they have included: The Defence Animal Centre’s Open Day in Melton Mowbray: The Royal Tigers Regimental Association Annual Tigers Sunday Service and Parade and The Welbeck Defence College’s Annual General Inspection which this year was performed by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. These events demonstrate the importance that the Armed Forces place on civic and community engagement. As co-host of the Armed Forces Day Service and Parade held in Leicester, it was good to reciprocate these invitations. The Service and Parade this year was the largest the Councils have staged with representatives of the Armed Forces, veterans and cadets numbering 600. The parade through the City was a true spectacle. This was the Councils’ chance to show our appreciation for the special service they give to the country, and with thousands of people lining the parade route, the demonstration of public support was tremendous.

Maintenance of The Nook Roundabout, Anstey. I did have several complaints about the maintenance of The Nook roundabout which had become overgrown with thistles and weeds. I was pleased with the help of John Dowling, we spent an afternoon tidying up and weeding the middle of the roundabout. I would personally like to thank John for his help. taking time out to make a difference for the village. Many people have told me how much better The Nook area looks now. I am hopeful we can resolve the ongoing maintenance with the Council.

Anstey W.I. How many kinds of sweet flowers grow in an English country garden? As many as there are members of Anstey W.I. and their guests. The meeting of the W.I. in July took place in the beautiful English garden of June Roe. There were apples on the trees, tomatoes in the greenhouse, a well mown lawn to rival Wimbledon and a wonderful array of flowers. June was able to ensure that the sun shone, the rain didn't fall and that both members and guests could sit outside and enjoy the pleasures of her garden and hospitality with the help of her fellow W.I. members. There were a great number of cakes, teas, a raffle with some fabulous prizes which included those of an alcoholic nature and a great deal of chat. The only downside was that it was quite cold and there was not a sign of a pretty summer frock so everyone had to resort to wearing warm clothing. This did not deter from the wonderful atmosphere and genial conversation which could be heard around the group. There was a serious side to the event as this was an annual fund raiser by Anstey W.I. with all the money raised, which was £130 in total, from the entrance fees, raffle, cakes and teas going to the local Multiple Sclerosis Centre in Latimer Street, Anstey. Only in England could you find a bevy of beautiful flowers on a cold summers evening.

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY

“Here we are again, Happy as can be – All good friends and jolly good company” This little ditty just about sums up the happy atmosphere enjoyed during the annual Strawberry Cream Tea organised by our Deputy Leader, Mrs. Sue Wakerley, for the Club Members and friends at “The Bluebell Inn” Rothley on the 13th July 2015. We were plied with more than generous helpings of Strawberries, Double Cream, Strawberry Jam, Butter and newly baked fruited Scones, not to mention the vast amount of tea and coffee supplied. The service from the Waitresses was exemplary, which more than added to the happy occasion; we shall look forward to repeating the event again next year. Our next meeting will take place on the 10th August, in the room at the rear of The Cropston Evangelical Chapel, Station Road, Cropston, at 2.15pm when Mrs. Claire Orbell will return to talk us through “Why not try something different!” Part 2. If you have been considering coming along to the Club, you will be most welcome and this includes husbands and partners. Latest Borough News‌ Events On 1st July I attended Charnwood Highways Forum meeting run by Leicestershire County Council (LCC), as I am a Borough Councillor representative on this committee. Here are some updates from this meeting: Street Lighting - LCC are in the process of replacing all 66,000 street lights with LED bulbs as this will reduce the overall cost of providing street lighting. There will be no change to the lights that are already being switched off at night. We were informed that the Police can ask for the lights to be temporarily switched on to assist them with any of their operations. Grass Cutting - LCC explained that the grass cutting has been reduced from the six cuts last year to five cuts this year. This equates to the grass verges being cut every six weeks. There are ten parishes within Charnwood Borough that have taken over some of the grass cutting areas from LCC, Anstey being one of those parishes. LCC are receiving some complaints regarding the grass cutting and they advised that this will be reviewed at the end of this cutting season in October. Highways - With regards to the highways, pot holes have improved and there are far less complaints being received. This is due to better repairs and surface dressings being applied before any pot holes appear. There are some roads in Anstey that are due to be surface dressed in this financial year. They includes: Birkdale Road, Hazelhead Road, Andrew Road, Princes Close, Roseberry Road and Anstey Lane near to the city boundary. On 3rd July I attended a charity event at Martin High School to raise money for Jade’s Retreat. A total of £1,400 was raised on the evening and I have been informed that the charity has nearly reached its target figure to purchase a holiday caravan in Norfolk to provide holidays for teenagers with cancer and children with special needs. Well done to everyone who helped organise the event, the Ratby Mid Band for the entertainment and to the guests who attended to support this charity. On 17th July I was invited to attend one of the graduation ceremonies at Loughborough University. This was held in the Sir David Wallace building for students graduating from School of Arts, English and Drama. It was a very pleasant afternoon and lovely to see so

many young people achieving their degrees after all their hard work. Well done also to the Mayor and Mayoress of Charnwood who attended all eight graduation ceremonies.

Updates The railings in The Nook car park were repaired on 25th June and I am glad to say this has now not only made the area safer but also look a lot tidier. The Nook roundabout grass was cut on 27th June by Leicestershire County Council. County Councillor David Snartt and John Dowling then weeded the roundabout and re cut the grass on 1st July. A big thank you to them both for their time and effort, The Nook is looking lovely again. There are currently negotiations ongoing regarding the long term maintenance of the roundabout and I will update you as soon as I have more news. There are also a lot of weeds growing on the kerbsides and against houses and walls in the village. We have the good weather to thank for that! Leicestershire County Council has now been in Anstey spraying all the weeds so hopefully they will now die back.

Anstey Gala This year’s Gala is on September 5th, let’s hope for lovely weather! This is always a great day for Anstey and the Gala Committee work extremely hard to make it all happen. Anstey Community Library will be holding a stall there, so please go and speak to them if you are able to offer help and support. They will also be on hand to provide any information you require and explain more fully how the library will operate as a Community run library from October 2015. Improving Lives, Supporting Communities roadshow will also be attending between 12pm-4pm. This roadshow is available for people who’s lives are affected by such things as Anti-Social Behaviour, hate related crimes, welfare reform and housing issues. I am looking forward to the day and I hope to meet many of you there.

Residents Surgery I have now finalised arrangements for the first surgery for Anstey residents to bring any issues or concerns that they may have to my attention. The surgery will be held on Saturday 26th September, 10am-12pm at Jubilee Hall.

County Councillor David Snartt and

Charnwood MP Edward Argar will also be attending (hopefully nothing urgent will crop up!) to make themselves available to speak to

residents. The doors will be open for you to drop in and chat to all of us on a one to one basis. I would like to keep these regular Â? Â?Â? Â? surgeries as informal as possible so there will be  no fixed appointment times. Please do come and have a chat with us even if you don’t have any particular issue, it is always nice to € put a face to a name.

Anstey Community Library

The last public event held on 8th July was well attended and we have had some new volunteers come forward. We still need more Â’ Â’  ÂŒ ÂŽ ‘ people to come and support us, even if you „ ‡ can only spare a couple of hours weekly or • € ” monthly. I would like to thank all the volunteers Â? Â? ‰ ƒ who are helping us, without your support this – € project wouldn’t work. I am also appealing to — residents from villages outside of Anstey who use Anstey library to come along to our next Â? ÂŒ meeting. Our next open public meeting will be ˜“ Â? €Â?“ “™ on 5th August at 7.15pm at Jubilee Hall. Â? ƒ Â? ÂŒ –  ÂŒ ƒ š„„… †”‡š„†… We have also received an update from ÂŒ ƒ – Â?ÂŒ Leicestershire County Council that the training for all our volunteers will begin week commencing 21st September for two weeks in the Anstey library. There are various days and times available over the two weeks and we hope to accommodate as many of the volunteers as possible. In addition, we also have two group training sessions booked on 7th and 14th September in Jubilee Hall. The 14th September evening will include a presentation by the Library Service. I have been involved in this project for over a year and we are nearly there now! We really want this library to succeed and remain open so if you feel you can help and support us please contact Phil Knight on: AnsteyLib@virginmedia.com, twitter: @AnsteyLibrary or please contact myself. If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help. Please contact me on the details above.

AUGUST IN THE GARDEN

August is the month to enjoy the fruits of your labours. There should be an abundance of fruit and vegetables. Tomatoes, salad crops, peas, beans, potatoes etc.

Lift and dry onions, shallots and garlic this month. Continue to dig potatoes. Pinch out the tips of tomato plants, aim for about 5 to 6 trusses per plant. Continue feeding and watering and of course keeping an eye out for pests and diseases. Harvest beans and courgettes regularly before they get too big. Top fruit such as peaches, nectarines and apricots should be ready too. Trim back herbs to encourage fresh tender growth. Check greenhouse crops daily and keep watered, ventilated and shaded. Tidy up any dead and decaying matter to discourage disease. Discontinue feeding the lawn and raise the blades on the mower in readiness for autumn. Growth will be slowing down towards the end of the month. Re-cut the lawn’s edges to neaten it up. Give hedges a final trim. Continue to aerate compost regularly by turning it. Keep Camellias and Rhododendrons well watered during August. This will encourage next year’s buds to develop. Continue to water and feed hanging baskets and containers, dead head as necessary. Stake tall herbaceous plants such as Dahlias. Prune roses and other summer flowering shrubs after they have finished flowering. Continue to spray pernicious weeds such as ground elder and bind weed with a glyphosate based weedkiller. Towards the end of August new stocks of spring flowering bulbs become available. Hyacinths for Christmas flowering should be started off now. We keep ours outside covered with a thick layer of straw and then bring them into the warm greenhouse mid November to green up. Enjoy the final few weeks of summer – autumn is on the way.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hello Everyone. Well what a month? Tropical but short   high  heatwave, followed by pouring rain,      winds, plus thunder and lightning which took a chimney out in Anstey. A typical English Summer really. On the sporting front we actually got more than Andy Murray through to the 2nd’ week of Wimbledon. The English Ladies World Cup Football team finished in 3rd. place at the finals played in Canada. (Watch out Mr Rooney and Co) and the England cricket team beat the Aussies in the first Ashes test in Cardiff, only for the same team to turn up at Lord’s a few days later, masquerading as test players, and being soundly thrashed by the “Baggy Cap” boys. A shock at Leicester City FC but let’s “Keep the Faith” In C.R. We now trust!

Road Works. Not good news here but the road works and closures on Gynsill Lane, Anstey. County Hall and New Parks Boulevard/Way will unfortunately be with us for about the next 14 months. Some of the closures will of course only be temporary but never the less it is a bit of a chore. To find out more ring Dave Collis. Leicestershire Highways. 0116 3050001.

Benefits HELP? ☺ YES!!! Are you having problems understanding the benefit system and what you are entitled to? I know I was, but was successful by asking the right people because the forms are not easy to fill in (believe me). I got in touch with “Age UK” to ask for help and they sent a volunteer to my home. Considering he had done the work before it took him over 2 hours to complete the assessment form! (Thank you to John in Cropston). It is a “FREE” service, although I did make a contribution to the Age UK Charity. For more information call 0116 2992233. Leicestershire CAB/Macmillan. They will also give you advice and help to get what really is rightfully yours. They hold clinics at the LRI and Glenfield Hospital. To make an appointment, please call 0300 456 8400. Between 9.30am-12.30pm and 1pm-4pm. Monday to Friday. *MUST be worth a phone call at least? It was for me, and beneficial. (Be silly not to really).

Charnwood Guided Walks 2015. In partnership with Fusion. Charnwood Borough Council have produced a booklet of walks throughout the Borough. All the walks

14

are graded and suitable for all. We have over 108sq miles of lovely English countryside. Embracing the market town of Loughborough and over 35 rural villages, most of them with appropriate “watering holes” You can also check the programme on line:www.fusion-lifestyle.com/outdoors Email:- walks@fusion-lifestyle.com/outdoors or simply call 0116 2375267.

CBC Warden & Lifeline services. Charnwood Borough Council will be taking over the funding of these vital services as from September 2015. It was a service run by CBC but funded by Leicestershire County Council. That funding is now being stopped (How caring). But due to good housekeeping at the Borough Council we have been able to find and fully fund the continuation of these necessary services. £305,000 for the Sheltered Housing Warden Scheme and £85,000 for the lifeline service. CBC caring council…

Family Holidays? One more bank holiday then the long trek towards Christmas. Many a happy time with my parents and 2 Brothers Andrew and Alan at Ingoldmels, near Skeggy, on Golden Sands caravan site. Going down to the beach and eventually finding the sea! What used to puzzle us was that we were encouraged to go and play in the sea and enjoy ourselves, only to be fished out, wrapped in a towel and race back to the caravan when it started raining? We could never quite fathom that one out.

Anstey Library. As you may already have read elsewhere, but if not here’s a reminder. Due to more County Council cuts, volunteers will be taking over the running of the library, hopefully sometime in early October. We have a number of volunteers from Anstey including myself; not for long periods but as much as I dare. However we still need some more especially from other local villages that will benefit from this new scheme.

and 2nd. 10am – 3pm. See a Model “T” Ford, a Jeep and every possibility of a Tank!!! Admission I understand will be Free but to be honest I would hope you will all make a donation to this very worthy cause.

July. Vinyl Night at Nomads. Verdict! The “Your Local” did get to most houses on time to catch the latest charity vinyl/ semi live night and what a success it was. The place was standing room only and the raffle; this time for the “Breast Care Cancer Charity” raised £220 on the evening. (Thanks Chris Wilkes.) Marlene Deetrick was a bit risqué under the lamp light, Sunny & Share have still got each other, while master of ceremonies the eloquent Bryan Sachs from the good olde days gave me headache in both ears! Yours truly wasn’t too bad either 8 songs was my limit though. The people were getting restless!!! Thank you to all those who came along and supported the event. The next one is scheduled for Friday September 4th. More details in the next “Your Local.” Keeping you in touch. We may, if he will do it for “nowt” have a special guest… negotiations are on-going?

AGADOO!!! Yes you remember it well from 1984? Well Colin Gibb lead singer with Black Lace has been in touch to say that “AGADOO 2015” (SpACE Mix) has been released! Escaped more likely? I’ve just listened to it and can’t quite take it all in! But nevertheless it’s still a great song to sing and dance to. Push pineapple shake that tree. I bet you are singing it right now? ☺☺

Royal British Legion. On the first weekend of August the Anstey section of the RBL will be on parade at the Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey. A special exhibition with lots of memorabilia from the dark days of yesteryear when men and women made the ultimate sacrifice. Take a look at the war memorial nearby during your visit and see who from Anstey never came back! Be there if you can. Saturday and Sunday 1st

Anthony Nolan. You may remember came to Anstey in 2014 to try and find me a bone marrow donor in

the “Spit for Sutty” day. The trust will be holding special events during September 2015 throughout venues in Leicestershire. Rik Basra is the organiser a patient like me. Hopefully I’ll be doing my bit to raise awareness of this vital service that Anthony Nolan provides. And Finally ☞☞☞☞☞ ~ Thank you ~ ☜☜☜☜☜ To County Councillor David Snartt and John Dowling for tidying the Nook roundabout up recently, we all got fed up waiting for County Hall. I was there, the mind was willing but the body is still recovering. However I did keep them in isotonic energy drinks. If you want to volunteer for any worthwhile village improvements, with all the government cuts taking effect, now would be a good time to get a party together. Be lovely to clean the local brook up. Yes the drinks will be on me, but steady! Get in touch and be proud of your village. We once had a “Keep Anstey Tidy” group which actually won recommendations, in the Leicestershire best kept larger villages’ category. Where those people are now I haven’t a clue? Swept away perhaps!! Pop in and have a private chat at any reasonable time or get in touch through the usual channels, and now Facebook. Take care everyone.

Yours. Cllr. John J. Sutherington.

NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW Fake Designer Goods Alert People looking for a cheap designer bargain online are being targeted by fraudsters advertising fake designer goods. The items received are usually cheap and inferior counterfeits of handbags, clothes and sunglasses amongst other things. The general rule is ‘if it looks too good to be true then it probably is.’ Designer products sold at heavily discounted prices are an immediate sign that something isn’t quite right. What can you do to protect yourself? • Where possible, buy from well-known, High Street retailers. If you've never heard of a firm, or it is based overseas, be sceptical. • Avoid paying by cheque or bank transfer. Use PayPal or a credit card as they will give you additional protection. • Search the internet. Type the website you are buying from and look for reviews of what others customers are saying about the company. Bad customer service feedback usually finds its way online quite quickly. • Check for spelling mistakes or poor grammar on websites as this may suggest the website has been put together by a fraudster. • Sign up to Action Fraud Alert at https://www.actionfraudalert.co.uk/ to keep you updated with what’s going on. If you believe that you have been a victim of fraud you can report it online http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud or by telephone 0300 123 2040.

NEW NHW SCHEMES Sorry I haven’t been back to collect the NHW surveys from Arguile Avenue, and The Pastures yet. Due to unforeseen circumstances I haven’t had the time to collect them yet. I am hoping to pop along and give the surveys out to the people of The Mill shortly. If anyone living in Arguile Avenue or The Pastures is interested in becoming the coordinator for their area, please get in touch with me.

COORDINATORS’ MEETINGS The coordinators meet every two months in the Jubilee Hall. If you are interested in being a coordinator and would like more information on what it entails you are welcome to join us at our next meeting on Wednesday 2nd September at 7.30pm. Also if your present coordinator has stepped down and your scheme is no longer active, and you are interested in replacing them, then come along and learn what’s involved.

Student: Would you ever punish someone for something they didn't do?

NHW SCHEMES NO LONGER ACTIVE At the moment we are looking for coordinators for the following schemes:- Balladine Road Bradgate Road • Broughton Close • Charles Drive / King Williams Way • Charnwood Close alcon Road • Leicester Road / Nedd Ludd Close • Netherfield Road / Holgate Close

Teacher: Of course not!

To reactivate these schemes is not a big deal, we just need a person to be the representative for these roads. Without an active coordinator you can no longer qualify for any discount on your house insurance. It would be ideal if you have access to the internet, as this is the main means of communicating with everyone. You will receive the latest crime figures before they go into The Local and any important information the Police either want help with or warn us to keep a look out for.

Student: Okay good, because my homework isn't done yet.

ANSTEY GALA Once again Anstey NHW will be having 2 tables at the gala. I will be manning the crime prevention stall, selling a range of security devices. The other is a tombola to raise funds for Anstey NHW. If anyone has any items they would like to donate for this stall, please either get in touch with me or your coordinator.

For some years now, local charity Age UK .............................................................................................................................................................................. Leicestershire & Rutland has campaigned to reduce the 7 out of 10 people who die without a will. To that end this year, more than twenty offices of local Solicitors have generously agreed to reduce their Will Writing charges for older people to only £35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will. Whilst this is a huge reduction of around £100 with no strings attached, in earlier years some people have chosen to recognise needy local older people by leaving a greatly appreciated legacy to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland or making a donation, where the need is great especially in these difficult times. The offer is available from 1st September until 31st October. Hundreds of people took advantage of this superb, low - cost deal last year in what proved to be a very successful initiative by the charity. Details are available from 0116 2992233 or www.ageuk.org.uk/leics Commenting, the Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, Mr Anthony Donovan said, “Most people appreciate that it is extremely important to make a Will, but either never get round to it or continue to put it off on the basis that they are too young and it is something that they will do when they are much older. Unfortunately 7 out of 10 people die without sorting it out, in spite of the clear benefits. By making a Will you take the pressure off those nearest and dearest to you who will receive your money and property, rather than it being left to the rules of law to decide.” “Even if you have made a will, perhaps it was so long ago that it is time to consider whether it needs revising. Don’t miss this opportunity to put matters straight!”

The crime figures show a small rise across the board, and whilst spikes in crime are not unusual throughout the year, it does serve as a reminder to all residents to report any suspicious persons or activity to Police as it is happening. It would be a good time therefore to remind residents what the best ‘information’ would be to report to Police should they see a suspicious person and/or incident taking place. If the incident involves a person(s) then the following would assist officers greatly:

Burglary - 2 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage, Etc) Forest Gate, Balladine Road (Sheds)

• Male / Female and a brief description of person – Hair colour/style, build/height, clothing (any distinctive logos / patterns etc), any other distinguishing feature (glasses, headgear, tattoos, carrying a bag etc) • Direction the person was last seen walking/running • If a vehicle is involved then the following would assist: Make / Model / Colour and vehicle registration if possible Number of persons in vehicle and any descriptions as above Any ‘stand out’ features of vehicle – Damage to or different coloured panels, lights out, loud exhaust, ‘stickers’ in window etc. Direction vehicle was last seen travelling. We would stress that you should only try and obtain the above information if it is safe to do so. Remember - your information could be that final piece of the puzzle that leads to the arrest and conviction of the criminal.

Theft of Motor Vehicle – 2 Hollow Road, Atkin Court (Albion Street) Theft from Motor Vehicle - 4 (inc Attempts) – Ashfield Drive, Groby Road, Hollow Road, Park Road Damage to Motor Vehicle – 1 Gladstone Street Criminal Damage Dwelling – 0 Criminal Damage - 1 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage Etc) Loros Shop (The Nook)

• During the warm weather people are more likely to leave their doors and windows open to ventilate their properties.

Theft Cycle – 0

• Walk in burglaries do increase during the Summer months, so please don't be complacent - if you cannot see the door or window then it should be shut and locked.

Theft Property - 0

• If you are out enjoying your garden, remember to shut and lock all windows on the front of your property. Remember, it only takes a minute to become a victim of a sneak in burglary! • Enjoy your summer holiday but make sure your home looks lived in whilst your away • Use timer switches on lights to make you’re home look occupied in the evenings. • Cancel any regular delivers such as milk and newspapers. • If possible leave a car in your driveway or ask a neighbour to park there car on your driveway whilst you’re away. • Ask a neighbour to check on your home while you’re away and move any post out of sight. • If you have a lawn cut it before you go away and trim back any bushes or shrubs that burglars could hide behind. • Lock away any valuable items such as pedal cycles – they may be safer in your home than in an outhouse or shed. As always, we would ask all residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious person(s) or activity to Police on 101 or, if you feel a crime is taking place, 999. If you have any information at all about crime please call CRIMESTOPPERS. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. Just call – 0800 555 111

The Martin High School...

What a great summer concert Well done everyone who participated. We had over 100 students and 30 staff involved in this fantastic evening. Acts ranged from a solo rendering of ‘Build me up, buttercup,’ The return of the Queen of Sheba, two pieces of drama, two dance sets, two rock bands, numerous solos, a staff choir and ending with Nat King Cole’s, Let there be love.

The evening finished with a lovely presentation of 50 students saying their goodbyes to Martin Furniss. Many thanks to all those who participated to make it such a splendid evening. Garden Fete The weather held out for us to hold a Garden Fete on the last day of term, with over 30 stalls and lots of entertainment and Martins got talent. We held this in aid of the Cancer Research charity in memory of Ruth Wells, mother of Charlotte and Dominic. The pupils were asked to donate £1.00 to the charity, and ice creams and ice pops were available free of charge. The public were asked to pay £1.00 entry which entitled them to strawberries and cream. We felt this was a celebration for all our school community on becoming 11 – 16, and also to say a very sad farewell to members of staff that were retiring. The teachers that have retired this summer are:Mrs Worn Deputy Head, formerly Head of Art, Technology and Design will leave in July. Mrs Worn has played a leading role in developing the MHS at every stage of its development over the last 23 years. Nicola Worn personifies the Martin High School. She is a warm, inclusive and outstanding teacher who has inspired generations of students through teaching them Art.

confidence to become ever more skilful and outstanding.

She is a capable leader who understands people and ensures that every situation is tackled appropriately. If you have been taught by Nicola you will never forget the experience. Some of our parents will know through being taught by Nicola Worn just how special she is. Other parents will know through the interests and inspiration that their sons and daughters have developed, the impact she has as a teacher. Nicola was determined to lead the school to this point. She leaves knowing that she has achieved her main aim; an 11-16 MHS which continues to inspire generations of students Mr Holloway, is leaving after 37 years teaching at the Martin High School. He has been Head of Science and ICT as well as Deputy Head. Like Mrs Worn, Mr Holloway has been the cornerstone of our development to become an 11-16 school. A logical, determined, utterly hard-working professional, Mr Holloway has led the school in achieving its goals. A no nonsense and inspirational teacher, for many years, Mr Holloway led the science team to great success. In recent years, Andy has been responsible for curriculum organisation, timetabling and much of the day-to-day management of the school. He has steadied the ship when it has wobbled. He has been the voice of reason, carefully ensuring that day by day our 11-16 school has steadily materialised. Andy is a great leader who demonstrates through example how to get on and do the job. There may be grandparents out there who have been taught by Andy! There certainly

are many parents. You will know him to be a fair but fairly strict teacher who really teaches you well. There are generations of scientists who were initially sparked by Andy in his lab. Andy has participated in every aspect of school life, be it the sports field, the pantomime, the front of house at the concert, the ski trip organiser and even Head of ICT! Sue Trickett who as Head of English retires after 10 years teaching at the MHS. Sue quietly inspires her students. She works incredibly hard having spent many late nights and early mornings marking books ready for her students for the next day. Sue has recently overseen the expansion of the English team from 4 staff to 10 in just 2 years. She has made sure this team has been highly effective delivery a first class curriculum. A much loved, outstanding teacher. Well done Sue, a great job done. All the best to you in your retirement.

Sue Johnson who has taught Mathematics and been Head of Maths for 23 years at the MHS. Quiet, unassuming, determined, supportive, Sue is a truly outstanding teacher. She has been a great Head of Maths, jointly sharing the responsibility with Mr Loasby. She is known for the great relations she has with her students and her determination which ensures they achieve their potential. Much loved by her students, she is known for her quiet, tough love. There is no escape from Sue, you learn your maths. Sue is looking forward to retirement as her first grandchild has arrived. She will be sorely missed by all. Noelle Levy who has taught textiles/ technology for 12 years. Noelle combines experience in industry working for Asda and the George fashion line together with a great understanding of textiles education. Noelle

Nicola has a straightforward philosophy which enables her to motivate every child. She finds out what makes them tick and works with them to develop their strengths. She builds on their existing understanding, quickly enabling them to progress, grow in confidence and produce wonderful art. As a leader, Nicola inspires her colleagues. For many years she has taken responsibility for evaluating and progressing the quality of learning and teaching throughout the school. She demands high standards and expects a truly professional performance from her colleagues. Nicola has also been responsible for much of our recruitment, carefully picking out those staff who truly want to teach and are inspired by our students. She has nurtured the newly qualified teachers who have grown in

Bobby has had the major task of taking forward our first Year 10 and 11. They both love and respect him to bits. Bobby treats his students as if they were members of his family. He is dead straight in expectations and rewards. Known for his fairness and keen support, his year truly admire him. Bobby has been an outstanding professional: a great teacher who makes Science fun, engaging and interesting. He has motivated generations of MHS students. Bobby was determined to see his year through to the end. Many thanks Bobby, have a great retirement. Chris O’Neill who has taught Mathematics in the school for 13 years after a previous incarnation in primary education. Chris is a dead straight teacher. He is determined that all his students will learn and progress well. He looks for and expects the best behaviour and a keen interest in mathematics. He is much loved by those students who respond to this. A pillar of the Maths Department, Chris has played a significant role in its expansion as it has taken on the GCSE course. Chris is also a keen gardener; many of the flowers around the school are due to his tender care. Chris, we wish you the best for the future.

Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society On a fine summer’s day in July, a group from the Society made the journey to Hartlebury Castle near Kidderminster, which was until recently the official residence of the Bishops of Worcester. We were following in the footsteps of Richard Hurd, who was Rector of Thurcaston from 1756 to 1774. Hurd was a great favourite of George III and Queen Charlotte, becoming a tutor to their children including the future George IV, and he left Thurcaston when he was appointed as the Bishop of Lichfield. In 1781 he was promoted again to become Bishop of Worcester and he immediately set about building a new library at the Castle to house his collection of books. The Hurd Library remains on its original shelves today and it was the main focus of our visit. The Librarian, Chris Penney, had spoken at one of our meetings last year and we were pleased to see her again in her natural environment. First, however, we were given a tour of the state rooms of the Castle by the wife of one of the more recent Bishops. The manor of Hartlebury was first given to the Bishops of Worcester by the Anglo-Saxon kings of Mercia. In medieval times it was fortified against attacks by the Welsh but it was badly damaged during the Civil War and the building visible today largely dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. There is a Great Hall harking back to the medieval period and an elegant Saloon. In the windows of the beautiful chapel was a reminder that another son of Thurcaston, Hugh Latimer, had also been Bishop of Worcester. Upstairs we were shown a four-poster bed prepared for a visit by the Prince of Wales – the future George IV – to whom Richard Hurd had been tutor. In the event, George did not stay the night but the bed was eventually slept in by Charles, the current Prince of Wales. On to the Library, which is a light and gracious room built above the Long Gallery, with windows along one wall and around a central bay. Chris and two of her volunteer helpers had laid out examples of books from the collection, including some of particular relevance to us, such as an early atlas of Leicestershire and a letter written by Richard Hurd during his time at Thurcaston. The Library contains more than 4000 volumes and was put together at the height of the Enlightenment, when information of all kinds was being gathered and re-assessed, and we admired beautifully illustrated books on subjects ranging from the flora of London to travel in Tibet and the South Seas. Other books were notable for their provenance, including more than 100 given by George III from the Royal Collection and an edition of Spenser’s Faerie Queen that had formerly belonged to both Dryden and Pope. Chris is keen to make the books in the collection available for reference by anyone who is interested in the period or subjects concerned. The Hartlebury Castle Preservation Trust has just obtained Lottery funding to buy the building and secure its future, and there are plans to improve access in conjunction with the Worcestershire County Museum, which is already on the same site. The Castle should therefore become an even better destination for the public to visit in years to come but we were privileged to have such a warm welcome and expert guidance on our private tour.

Visit to Waterperry Gardens; ‘a surprise around every corner’ On Saturday 11th July, members of the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club set forth on their annual outing. This year’s destination was a step in to the unknown as Waterperry Gardens in Wheatly, Oxfordshire was new to us all. The house and gardens have an interesting history as they were originally a school of horticulture for young ladies set up by the redoubtable Beatrix Havergal in 1932, and it was still in existence until 1971. When the school closed in 1972, it paved the way for much development in the gardens which are now famous; there is much to see. Within the 8 acre site there are a rose and formal knot garden, water lily canal, riverside walk, and a very fine herbaceous border. There are wild flower meadows and a labyrinth for quiet contemplation, contemporary grass borders and endless flower beds, all stocked with plants grown on site and for sale in the plant centre, which is housed in the original walled garden.

Wed 12th August, 7.45 pm ‘A Van Full of Colour’ – Alan Dayman Alan is the owner of Derry’s nursery, and he will give us a masterclass on seasonal plant care. Choosing a wide selection of annuals and perennials, he will help us to get the very best from each of them. Sat 5th September, 32nd Annual Garden, Craft & Produce Show (Open to All) The Annual Show of the Thurcaston & Cropston Gardening Club will be held at the Richard Hill Primary School, Anstey Lane, Thurcaston on Saturday 5th September 2015.

This will be our third year at the school, the previous two were extremely successful. With a large range of classes there is something for one and all. Forget the idea that only “experts” participate, this is a Show designed to involve the whole family; the whole community. Whether you grow flowers and vegetables, arrange flowers, make jam, take photographs, paint, embroider we have a class just right for you. It’s a wonderful opportunity to show-off your skills, so please don’t be afraid to have a go - it’s not the fierce competition that many still believe it to be. If you’ve always thought “I’d love to have a go but…..” don’t hesitate, join in the joy of taking part in a gentle competition with like-minded folk.

Heatwave Advice Record Breaking year for the Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride

Public Health England has issued advice to help people stay safe in the hot conditions. Warnings of a heatwave are given as soon as the Met Office forecasts that there is a 60% chance of temperatures being high enough on at least two consecutive days to have a significant effect on health. Even if temperatures do not hit extreme levels, Public Health England (PHE) still advises people to keep safe in the sun, seek shade to cool down and keep hydrated with plenty of cool fluids.

Top advice for being sun safe:

This year’s Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride was the best yet, with a great turn out of 190 riders – which was a record number. ‘We would like to thank all our super cyclists, our wonderful marshals, our cake bakers and our helpers, we would like to give a special mention to our sponsors The Woodies and Bradley’s Supermarket, who have supported this event annually – thank you so much for your support.’ Emma Hallam, Alex’s Wish Founder and Alex’s Mum

Try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm

Wear sunscreen

Wear loose cotton clothing

Drink lots of cool drinks

Seek shade

Wear sunglasses and a hat

The event was photographed and filmed by Shadow Media, with the photos and film now available at www.alexswish.co.uk. There were some amazing sights including our first unicyclist who managed to do the full 20 miles.

Look out for others especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children and babies and those with serious illnesses

The weather was great and there was good back up and support from Raynet, St John’s Ambulance and Pedal Power of Loughborough, who were all working at the event to keep all the riders safe and on the road.

Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals

The last bits of sponsorship money have just been sent in and the event this year raised a massive £9,156.18 for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, an amazing record breaking amount.

Remember that it can get uncomfortably hot indoors too. Try to keep your bedroom and living space cool, by closing the curtains on windows that receive the sun and opening your windows at cooler times of the day and overnight when you can. Turn off non-essential lights and electrical items as these generate heat. A Public Health England spokesman said: “While many people enjoy hot weather, high temperatures can be dangerous, especially for people who may be particularly vulnerable such as older people, young children and those with serious illnesses. “Everyone can enjoy the sun safely by keeping out of the heat at the hottest time of the day, avoiding sunburn and staying hydrated with plenty of cool drinks. The elderly and those with long-term illnesses are particularly vulnerable to the effects of very hot weather, so it’s important to look out for them and keep indoor areas as cool as possible.”

‘Such a fantastic event. Brilliant route, well signposted, extremely friendly marshals and the other cyclists were all lovely, very friendly and supportive. Check in was easy, on line entry easy – very impressive. The cakes and tea included at the end were genius and finished off a lovely morning’ said Jessica Apps a cyclist that took part in the ride.
