July 2014

Residents of Anstey, we are pleased to announce that Cllr David Snartt has managed to secure a visit by your local MP Rt. Hon. Stephen Dorrell. Mr Dorrell will be coming to the village to host a question and answer session at Jubilee Hall! You can let him know your feelings and concerns over the unsolicited housing developments and associated planning applications that we are fighting. Your questions to Mr Dorrell will be most important and will we are sure show the strength of feeling within the village. Would you like to ask a specific question? Please let us know so that we can add it to the agenda or if you are of the shy persuasion, allow ‘Save Anstey’ to ask on your behalf. If you want help in setting your question or want any other help please contact SaveAnstey@gwkw.co.uk. The meeting will take place at THE JUBILEE HALL on Friday 1st August at 7pm. Spaces will be limited so turn up early. On to the outstanding applications: The application for the Bradgate Road site was resubmitted in March, this time for 19 houses but still including the demolition of the property on Bradgate Road to create access to the development. The closing date for comments was 25 April and the Council again received an even higher number of letters of objection. The developers, however, have been allowed to make further changes to the design and resubmit another amended layout. Anyone who commented on the previous scheme will have received a letter from the Planning Department explaining this. All comments previously received by the Council will still be considered. It does seem frustrating that in spite of the strong response there has been from the local community and further afield against this scheme, that the developers are able to keep amending their plans. Gynsill Lane - Awaiting a Section 106 legal agreement on footpath upgrade. All remaining developments are with Planning Officers under consideration, although LCC Highways are considering whether improvements can be made which would overcome their objection to the Cropston Road development. Let’s hope they don’t.

Yes, we must keep FIGHTING

Wanted 30 anstey householders Wanted 30 Anstey householders who would be willing to let us dig a small test pit in their back garden, a hole just one metre square by one metre deep. Early history remains something of a mystery in Anstey and there are clues waiting to be discovered in back gardens around the village. Beneath the earth are objects left behind by the people who lived in Anstey hundreds, even thousands of years ago. For more information please see page 12

RICHARD HILL SCHOOL THURCASTON TO CELEBRATE 300 YEARS IN 2015 Richard Hill School is proud to be celebrating a Tri-centenary year in 2015. The school was established in 1715 by the then Rector of Thurcaston, Rev Richard Hill, initially operating from the church porch! Our founder desired that his school should prepare its scholars for life’s opportunities and challenges. Richard Hill saw education as a balance between social, academic and religious learning. We still adhere to his guiding principles – they have served us well for the past 300 years! The school will be having a series of events to mark this auspicious year culminating in a celebration at an open day/reunion event on Saturday 27th June 2015. If you are an ex-pupil or an ex-employee or a friend of the school please put this date in your diary. We would be pleased to hear from you with any memories you may have and if you have any photographs that you think would be interesting in a display please let us know. We have a dedicated tri-centenary email address if you would like to get in contact; rtricenten@richardhill.leics.co.sch.uk

Roy Hodgson has set up a friendly match against Iceland to try and cheer fans up.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not

just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Borough Councillor Report

Bradgate Flower Club Bradgate Flower Club meets on Wednesday 6 August to welcome Richard Adams, the well known photographer from Oakham. From a lifetime's collection of images and a variety of themes, Richard's focus is on 'A Camera in the Garden'. This presentation offers a change from our regular demonstrations and will appeal to gardeners and camera enthusiasts as well as flower arrangers and lovers of the East Midland's landscapes! The meeting starts at 7.30 in Newtown Linford Village Hall (LE6 0AE). Visitors are welcome - a charge of £5 is made. Details from Lilian Coleman on 0116 2363191. On 3 September Bradgate Flower Club is hosting a Harvest Supper with a presentation on 'Corn Dollies' by Judy Marshall of Peatling Magna. As well as demonstrating her skills, Judy will also lead a 'have a go' session. The meeting starts at 7.30 in Newtown Linford Village Hall (LE6 0AE) - bring a contribution to the supper. Visitors are welcome - a charge of £5 is made. Details from Lilian Coleman on 0116 2363191.

Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hope you are all enjoying the nice sunny weather and one way and another still fighting to stop the over development of the village. At the moment, unfortunately, a lot of my summer is being spent in an air conditioned room at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, recovering after a successful bone marrow transplant, but hopefully by the time you read this I will be back at home and catching up on a number of e-mails. On the sporting front I understand that ANFC have appointed a new manager Rob Harris, and his assistant Jimmy Withers, hopefully these 2 experienced men will be able to put together a Nomads side capable of not ‘just avoiding’ relegation next year. A special ‘get well soon’ to chairman Tony Ford, who is also in hospital at the moment. Cricket. Anstey and Glenfield first eleven continue to do well under the captaincy of 18 year old Joe Harris, and have continued to lead Division 7 of the Leicestershire League by winning 8 of their first

9 matches. The second eleven are not doing so well and are currently mid-table. Good to see the Crown Inn open on a more permanent basis and a new landlord at the Hare and Hounds, which should bring both pubs some much needed stability. Also Roots and Fruits is under new management and is now also selling flowers. The new traffic calming implementation on Bradgate Road seems to have been reasonably successful but I feel that with the traffic calming there also needs to be more on-street parking, especially during the evening. And finally, sorry I’ve not been my usual ebullient self just lately but if everything goes alright and I do as I am told things will improve. Thank you for your continued support, especially from my fellow councillors, during what has been a difficult time for me and my family. Things can only get better. JJS ☺

Leicestershire RSPCA Leicestershire RSPCA is holding its second open garden of the season at the home of Miss Ruth lane, Chairman of the local branch, in aid of the Woodsie Animal Centre at Scudamore Road in Leicester. Dogs are not allowed as there are resident cats and dogs There will be an RSPCA goods stall, plants for sale, a garden hunt for children, tombola and refeshments with a sandwich lunch being available. Donations of plants and tombola prizes are very welcome. For further details ring Becky on 0116 2336677. This event is a delight to garden and animal lovers alike. David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate. Vice Chairman, Leicestershire County Council. It is a great honour for me to be elected at the Annual Meeting Vice Chairman of the County Council for the ensuing year. I look forward to supporting the newly elected Chairman, Mr Bill Boulter with his civic duties across the county.

May I also take this opportunity to congratulate Councillor Paul Day on becoming the Mayor of Charnwood. Street Lighting in Anstey. I have had several residents contact me about the level of crime since the part lighting scheme has been introduced in the village of Anstey. There has been a meeting of representatives from the Borough and County Council, Police and Neighbourhood Watch to discuss the issues raised by residents since the part time street lighting scheme was introduced in Anstey. I understand that the situation will be monitored and a full review will take place at the end of August. At a recent Charnwood Highways Forum, it was stated a review is undertaken in each area one year after the lighting is converted to part-night lighting. To date, the responses from the emergency services and the Council's Accident Investigation and Prevention Unit have indicated that this initiative has not led to an increase in crime or road traffic accidents. It was also stated that research has shown that over all crimes occurring between the hours of switch off in the Borough of Charnwood have come down by 4% following lighting changes. Roadside Parking in Newtown Linford. I have been supporting a petition brought forward by a local resident requesting the introduction of parking restrictions on

8

Bradgate Road to the eastern side of the entrance to Bradgate Park. Currently on this short stretch of road there is no restriction on vehicles parking in this location which severely restricts the view of drivers of other vehicles travelling in both directions. The proposal is to install double yellow lines to overcome, in my view, a highway safety issue. I have also asked if other areas of the village could be included as more vehicles seem to be parking on the roadside when visiting Bradgate Park. I have asked that restrictions are installed around the area of the Cemetery where parking has increased on the bend and introducing limited waiting during the day time period (8.00am to 6.00pm) on the parking bay opposite the Cricket Field and the parking bays on Groby Lane Service Road with double yellow lines between the parking bays. I am hopeful that residents will support these proposals when they are out for consultation. Housing Development Update. All seems to have gone quiet with the planning applications within the Anstey Parish. I understand the issues are around the highway situation, where more information is needed on the extra traffic implication and the effect this will have on the capacity of the existing road network. I know this extra development on greenfield land is of great concern to local residents especially those living in Anstey and Thurcaston. Therefore at a meeting I attended with members of the Save Anstey Campaign I suggested that we have a Public Meeting and invite our local MP Stephen Dorrell. This has now been arranged for Friday 1st August at the Jubilee Hall, Anstey at 7.00pm. I hope residents will come along and listen to what help and advice our MP can give and have your say how this piecemeal development is affecting our villages for future generations. Register to Vote is Changing. The way we register to vote is changing, this is the biggest change in more than 100 years. From June 2014 individual electoral registration will require each member of a household to register to vote. previously one person was able to register everyone in their household. For the first time, people will be able to register online by providing a National Insurance Number and Date of Birth which is designed to make the electoral register more secure. Most people who are already registered will not have to do anything, but some residents will need to take action to join the new electoral register. I understand Charnwood Borough Council will be writing to residents to tell them about the change and is urging residents to look out for a letter between August 4th to 15th. This

letter will let know people if they need to take action. Shire Community Solutions Grant. The County Council is committed to supporting voluntary and community sector organisations to work alongside the Council to design and develop innovative solutions, to enable the delivery of key services for our communities. To support these ambitions Leicestershire County Council has committed £260,000 in 2014-15 for the Shire Community Solutions Grant Fund. The Grant Fund will support and enable voluntary and community organisations including social enterprises, Town and Parish Councils. the key focus of the Fund will be to prioritise projects which address vulnerability, disadvantage and access to essential services. Two examples of the types of projects: Services and activities that help older and/or vulnerable people live independently in the community: Support to establish community initiatives, such as community run volunteer transport schemes, befriending services and good neighbour schemes. The maximum amount of funding eligible organisations can apply for is £10,000. For more information about the grants offered by the County Council go to www.leics.gov.uk/grants or e-mail shiregrants@leics.gov.uk Superfast Broadband Update. You may recall I gave some information about the Leicestershire County Council's project to bring superfast fibre broadband to rural Leicestershire. The Council has announced the first communities to benefit from the scheme. In the first phase around 10,000 homes and businesses across the county will have access to high speed fibre broadband from summer 2014 onwards. In my Bradgate Division, I understand, for the first time this will be available in Woodhouse and Woodhouse Eaves, where the majority of homes and businesses will be able to connect to the new network. If you need to contact me on any issues write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 0HH e-mail david.snartt@leics.gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804.

JULY’S NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW DON'T LET GREEN FINGERED THIEVES SPRING CLEAN YOUR SHED. Many people take a great deal of trouble securing their house and the property within it...but what about sheds and garages? With the array of lawn mowers, power tools, garden equipment, bicycles, sports and other valuable equipment kept in them, security measures should certainly be put in place. Property Gardening tools and garden furniture are not cheap - what's more they are very saleable items for the thief. Don't make it easy for them to be stolen and remember that tools stolen from your shed could be used to burgle your house.

alarms. They are for internal use on sheds and come with a FREE external sensor alarm. I still have a good supply left if anyone is interested in obtaining one. The price is only £10. Please make your shed as secure as your home. Thank you to everyone who has already purchased a shed alarm. NEW AREA’S BEING COVERED As I mentioned in last month’s article, I am busy setting up new NHW schemes in Anstey. I will be pleased to welcome the following new coordinators to Anstey NHW once their scheme has been registered. • Marie Davis, Leicester Road • Nicky Veltchev, Ned Ludd Close

• Postcode or property mark anything in your shed or garage that is of value and might be stolen, for example, lawn mowers, garden furniture, bicycles, sports equipment.

• Sarj Ruparecia, Choyce Close

• Take photographs of expensive items they may be useful to police to identify the goods and return them to you, should you be unfortunate enough to have them stolen.

Also I am very disappointed to the response to last month’s article concerning the schemes which still have a vacancy for a scheme coordinator.

• Never leave garden tools and equipment outside, even if you are just popping back into the house. It only takes minutes for an opportunist thief to take them. • Consider fitting a pair of garage door locks that are fitted either vertically or horizontally and can be locked both from the inside and outside of the garage. WEB SITE Unfortunately due to the lack of a sponsor for our web site, www.GoAnstey.co.uk it will cease after 28th July. Which is very disappointing as we have just received a request for membership to Anstey NHW via this site. ANSTEY GALA We will again be attending this event, with a tombola and guess the name of the Teddy competition. The Teddy is a signed limited edition “Charlie Bear”. Please come and support us, in our main fundraiser of the year. Helping to raise funds to support our members in purchasing various security devices, to help keep residents in Anstey feeling safe. U3A I have been asked to speak on Crime Prevention at the next U3A’s meeting on Wednesday 3rd July, in the Jubilee Hall starting at 2.30pm. I will be bringing a variety of security devices with me, so please come along and secure your homes for the summer. Anstey’s opportunity to ‘dig’ history Anstey’s residents can get hands-on experience taking part in a major project exploring the rich history of Charnwood Forest. ‘Charnwood Roots’ is exploring how people have lived, worked and enjoyed this unique part of Leicestershire across the centuries; from pre-history through to modern day. And as part of the Festival of British Archaeology (July 12th to July 27th), Charnwood Roots will be holding a number of events around Charnwood Forest to give local people a chance to take part in some hands on archaeology. The most important event will be a community dig in Anstey, where early history remains something of a mystery. But there are clues waiting to be discovered in back gardens around the village. Beneath the earth are objects left behind by the people who lived in Anstey hundreds, even thousands of years ago. “This evidence can be pieced together to help us understand what was happening in Anstey in ancient and medieval times and will allow us to build up a picture of how the village developed in the period before we have written records,” explains Charnwood Roots Project Manager Julie Attard of Leicestershire Victoria County History Trust. The dig will be led by the Charnwood Roots team with help from archaeologists from the University of Leicester and local volunteers. “It’s a project that will unearth a few hidden stories and be a great opportunity to celebrate the many contributions Charnwood has made to the nation. “We’re looking for 30 householders in Anstey who would be willing to let us dig a small test pit in their back garden, a hole just one metre square by one metre deep. “The dig is suitable for everyone. You can volunteer your garden for one of our 30 test pits, offer to help dig a test-pit elsewhere in the village, or help wash and process the finds,” adds Julie. All training and equipment will be provided and no previous experience is necessary. The dig will take place over the weekend of Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th July. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Julie at charnwoodroots@le.ac.uk or telephone 0116 252 5946. You can find out more about the whole project at www.charnwoodroots.org or follow at @CharnwoodRoots and there’s a growing community of support on Facebook.

2,500 comment on Libraries’ future

More than 2,500 people have had their say on the county council’s proposals for communities to run up to 36 libraries. Consultation is taking place till July 7th and full details are on www.leics.gov.uk/haveyoursay/futurelibraries.

So far, the council has had: • 1,500 consultation responses •

More than 500 people attending public meetings

• More than 500 people taking part in drop-in sessions with library managers Public meetings will continue throughout June. For further details, see the website. Richard Blunt, cabinet member for libraries, said: “This excellent response rate shows that people value their libraries and want them to continue, as community hubs.”

FRIENDS OF MARTIN HIGH SCHOOL The friends of Martin High School, Anstey, recently postponed their car boot sale on Sunday 11th May at short notice. It had been brought to our attention that despite our best efforts to give notice of the postponement, some potential car booters turned up to either take a pitch or to visit the car boot sale. We would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience this caused to those who turned up on the Sunday morning to find the school gates locked. We will confirm the rescheduled date in the near future. Thank you for your understanding.

Anstey WI Members of Anstey WI, family and friends enjoyed a coach trip to Evesham and Cheltenham. After a dreadful week, the weather was kind, making exploring these two towns a pleasant experience. The art gallery and museum at Cheltenham was popular, and some visited the birthplace of composer Gustav Holst.

At the monthly meeting, we were royally entertained by belly dancer Roseanne Dinsdale. She spoke about her 30 year career as a professional belly dancer and fire eater, and demonstrated different types of belly dance, which is an umbrella term for all middle-eastern dancing. She also exploded some myths. What we know as belly dancing, and the costumes worn for it, owe more to Hollywood than the countries of origin. Roseanne often dances with a royal python draped about her person, but then she has to keep her movements slower and smoother. There were some amusing anecdotes about both the snake and the fire eating, which helped to make the evening great fun. Lithe, toned and elegant, Roseanne’s dancing was a joy, and fascinating to watch, her body quivering and undulating in remarkable ways. Members also enjoyed the array of glittering and shimmering costumes she had brought with her. The WI meets at the Jubilee Hall on Stadon Road on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm, except that there is no meeting in July. Visitors and new members are always welcome. In August we will have a speaker from the Just Shop in Leicester about Fair Trade.

JULY IN THE GARDEN Well hopefully July is sun all the way, but this is England so probably not. In the garden trim back faded perennials. Subjects such as Lupins, hardy Geraniums and Delphiniums can be cut back to encourage fresh growth. Dead head hanging baskets and bedding to encourage fresh growth. It’s the right time of year to prune Wisteria, prune back tendrils to about 20cm from the main stem. Dead head flowering plants, eg roses. Continue to weed, now is a good time to spray pernicious weeds such as ground elder, bind weed and mares’ tail. Use a glyphosate-based weedkiller. These weeds will need spraying 2 or 3 times to get on top of them. Continue to sideshoot tomatoes and to train up strings or canes. Keep all edible crops fed and watered. Check plants daily in greenhouses and remember to open the doors and windows to allow for good ventilation. Shade as necessary using shade netting or shade paint. Feed the lawn to encourage healthy green growth. Keep the grass watered if possible during any prolonged hot spells, especially if newly seeded or turfed. If there is a prolonged dry spell raise the blades on the mower to avoid stress (on the grass, not the person mowing it). Water containers daily and feed weekly. Water collected in water butts is perfect for this or consider a watering system. If you visit the nursery ask for a demonstration of our watering system. Keep compost bins well aerated by turning regularly. Be vigilant and check plants for pests and diseases and deal with as needed. July is the month for tomato and potato blight, spray with a suitable fungicide as necessary. Have a fabulous July – enjoy the garden, the World Cup and Wimbledon, you’ve worked hard, you deserve it!

Swithland Show... The hugely popular Swithland Flower and Vegetable Show will be held on Saturday 6th September at The Griffin Inn and the village school in Swithland. Last years show was another rousing success and raised a whopping £5,700.00 for Rainbows, LOROS and other local charities. The standard of entries was extremely high with strong contenders shown in the ever popular vegetables arena. Of equal standard were exhibits in the baking and crafts categories with many prizes won on the day. The ever popular afternoon auction was very well supported with lots of deep pocket digging by all the generous bidders. Why not take part this year? Start planning your entries now in the vegetables, fruit, flowers, baking and craft categories. It’s great fun for all the family and raises valued funds for deserving local charities. ALL the money raised by the show goes directly to Rainbows, LOROS and other local charities. For information on how to enter and take part please email Duncan Keates at duncan.keates@ sky.com or Sally Garner sally.garner667@gmail.com

The Martin High School...

Opening of Second Wing On the 19th June Colonel Robert Martin opened the second wing of the new school The school celebrated both a bumper year where all our students have done well together with the opening by enjoying a hog roast at lunchtime. Key speeches were made by Morgan Bates, Chair of the Student Council who welcomed all and thanked all those attending for their unstinting support Nigel Blythe, Chair of Governors, thanked all those who have made our conversion to 1116 possible. These include:• The Officers of the Local Authority and the EFA

• The local councils who are most supportive • Friends of the school who are determined to make the conversion successful He particularly mentioned James Wilson of Davidsons who has provided £330K in support of the new build. He went on to explain how the school was carefully combining the best of the practice and culture of the High School into the new dynamic 11-16 Secondary. Colonel Robert Martin thanked the school for inviting him to open the centre which is named after him.

He was delighted to maintain the connection with the school named after his family. He emphasised the value of education. It is at school that we learn our values; drive; purpose and the determination we will put into adult life. He wanted all our students to have every opportunity to realise this. The Colonel, along with 40 other guests were able to enjoy a hog roast served to all 700+ students. The event was complemented by musical performance throughout lunchtime from our year 9 and 10 students. All in all, a cracking or crackling good day out.

Summer Concert – Wednesday June 11th A very special evening with some outstanding performances from our students. A hint of sadness as this is Mrs Worthington’s last concert. She has always been a great believer that little acorns grown into big trees, sow now for the future. This evening’s concert demonstrated all her and her students hard work.

POLICEMATTERS Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 19 May and 18 June 2014 inclusive. Unfortunately, I have to report that for one of the Burglaries (Link Rd) entry was made via an open rear window and offenders were disturbed by the occupant. This was clearly a distressing incident for the homeowner, and highlights the importance of not leaving large rear windows open. I know this can be difficult during the warmer days, but it is something that must be considered to ensure your property remains secure. The incident on Link Rd occurred at 1pm on Tuesday 17th June and occurred at a property near to the Bradgate Rd junction. Two men were involved and were seen in the area acting suspiciously, if anybody has any information regarding this crime then please ring Police on 101 and quote reference: LC/02523/14-4. This week is National Neighbourhood & Home Watch Week, which gives me a perfect opportunity to say thank you to all our NHW partners for their commitment to helping people feel safe where they live. Anstey is nearing 100% Neighbourhood Watch coverage, which is testament to the hard work of my colleague and NHW Beat Manager Diane Tillotson and all her co-ordinators ~ keep up the fantastic work! Summer Drink Drive Campaign June 1st saw the commencement of the annual

Summer Drink Drive Campaign. So far 56 drivers have been detained at the roadside and we’re only halfway through the month long crackdown! The ages of those people arrested ranges from 17 - 65, and includes 46 males. Arrests are now being made across the force area in both rural and urban locations. I told my friend that she drew her eyebrows on too high.

Do you play – or would you like to learn.?

Canasta is played with two packs of cards. Each player tries to collect as many Canastas as possible. A Canasta is a group of 7 cards all the same number, with or without jokers/ wild cards and is built from a starting group of 3 cards. The game can be played in teams or as individuals. It is not a childs game !

She looked surprised.

We are a small non organisational group of like minded friends who enjoy a social time playing Canasta, We meet at a members house Each Monday, 2.0pm – 4.30pm. There are no fees involved.

First thing this morning, there was a tap on my door.

If you would like to see what we do why not pop in one Monday. For further details please contact 0116 237 5706.

Funny sense of humour my plumber has.

We look forward to hearing from you.

There was also a 40 per cent increase in the number of adopters, but the council wants to recruit more adopters as well finding an extra 100 foster carers following a six per cent rise in the number of children in care over the past 12 months. Ivan Ould, Cabinet member for children and families said: "The figures are really encouraging and the biggest shift seems to be people’s ability to accept that adoption is for them. Much of that is down to the work which has been done to bust myths about who can adopt. “There’s also been a keen national focus on adoption, and our awareness events in the county have also helped achieve these good results. “We want to recruit more people and we are very keen to hear from anyone who feels they can make the commitment to support the children.” The next open evening for potential adopters is being held on Monday, June 30 at County Hall in Glenfield from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Anyone can be considered as an adopter - whether you are on your own or in a relationship, working or not working, regardless of your race, religion or sexual orientation. THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY

“June is bursting out all over” as the song goes, at long last except for the odd showers of rain short and sharp, it felt more like Summer has arrived. It certainly felt that way within the Membership which was buzzing with news of recently taken holidays and those to come, not to mention the eagerly awaited next month’s Strawberry Cream Tea at the “Blue Bell Inn”, in Rothley Continuing on after the club’s “Business” we experienced a very special moment – a presentation to Mrs. Diana Whatton in gratitude for eleven years of faithful service running the

“Bring and Buy” table and supplying for every conceivable occasion, quantities of beautifully made cakes and especially, cream meringues!! I think the inserted photograph says it all, taken by fellow member Mrs. Gill Jefferson, our resident photographer. Our entertainment then followed, provided by four Members of the Leicestershire Speakers club. Three ladies and one brave gentleman, told a total of eight stories on which the membership had to decide whether they were “true or false”. We all had cards on which, after each story, we had to mark our conclusion, which took a great deal of concentration. The end result was given by each speaker and prizes were presented not only to the highest points, but down throughout. Very worthwhile prizes were gratefully received. After all this pleasurable hard work, the membership then tucked into a multitude of cakes to consume with refreshing cups of tea. Any enquires concerning information regarding the activities of this club, please contact me on 0116 2363467

Your dog could die this summer When it comes to leaving your dog in the car in the summer months, DON’T. Just 20 minutes in a hot car can kill a dog, even if you leave a window down. The Dogs Trust warns it is an agonising death, as the dog is slowly roasting alive. (Dogs can only sweat through panting.) The Trust warns: “People think that opening a window or leaving their car in the shade is fine, but we know that it is absolutely NOT the case. If you are going somewhere where you know you cannot take your dog, then leave it at home, because a dog can die in as little as 20 minutes.” Sadly, while a survey found that 28% of people are willing to risk their dog being left in a car, only 10% would ever dream of leaving their mobile phone in a car.

Chased by Cows? If you are out in the countryside this summer and end up in an unknown field, here is what to do: STOP, LOOK and LISTEN. Keep to paths and be prepared for cattle to react (aggressively?) if you have a dog with you. Move quickly, quietly and calmly. DON’T hang on to your dog if you are threatened – dogs can run much faster and reach safely quicker if you let them go. DON’T panic or run. If cattle follow you, just walk on quietly. NFU Mutual, the insurer who has given out the guidelines, says that about 500 people have been attacked and injured by cows in the past eight years. “Be aware of your surroundings,” urges NFU Mutual. “This is a working environment.”

Oddfellows Brass, Markfield

A Beautiful Local Garden is Opening to the Public A beautiful local garden is opening to the public again in July under the National Gardens Scheme to raise money for several worthwhile NGS charities. Last summer, during two Sundays, Mike & Liz Newcombe welcomed 500 visitors to their Newtown Linford garden and were able to raise £2500 for the NGS charities. The interest in and the enjoyment of this garden has resulted in several local groups, including gardening clubs, arranging private visits to the garden this summer. The Newtown Linford Gardening Club will also, once again, use this venue for their Summer Party on Tuesday 22nd July. On both Sunday 6th and Sunday 13th July the garden, which is situated halfway along Ulverscroft Lane between Newtown Linford and Ulverscroft, will be open to the public from 11.00am – 5.00pm. The 2-acre SW facing garden has stunning views across Charnwood countryside. Near the house are patios, water features, flower and shrub beds, fruit trees, greenhouses and vegetable plots. Lawns then slope down to a gravel garden, a large wildlife pond with waterfall and three small areas of woodland, with pleasant walks through many species of trees. The lower two thirds of this garden has been created since 2004, with over 160 conifers and deciduous trees planted. There are several places to sit and relax around the garden. Light refreshments will be available. There will also be plant sales, a book stall and a craft stall, selling jewellery, scarves etc. Admission for adults is £3.50, children are free and dogs on leads are welcome with well-behaved owners. PLEASE COME AND JOIN US. The full address is – ‘Mountain Ash’, 140 Ulverscroft Lane, Newtown Linford, LE6 0AJ. For further details and some photographs of the garden see the NGS website – www.ngs.org.uk – put either Mountain Ash or LE6 0AJ into the garden finder. Amongst the many charities supported by the NGS are Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices, Carers Trust and, this year, Parkinsons UK.

'As the renovations to the old Mission Hall in Markfield come towards a close, the Oddfellows Brass are also rebuilding their band. Formed in the mid 1980's under its current conductor and MD Robert Boulter, the band has progressed steadily over the years and even spent some time in the Championship Section before a series of illness and job changes forced a re-think. Now, the band is scouring for new and enthusiastic young players to move us through the summer. We play in some very prestigious venues as we perform for our sponsors and for other organisations. Understanding that young people are the future of the culture, we are not only looking for established players to fill positions in the Senior Band, but young people to experience 'Beginners Blow' - and for those with time to spare during the day, an ensemble to perform at special occasions. All enquiries are welcome and we hope to introduce this North West Leicestershire band to NEW audiences in the locality. Our website is www.oddfellowsbrass.co.uk and other contact details are on the poster attached.'

Have your say on anti-social behaviour … and you could win a Hudl RESIDENTS in Charnwood could win a hi-tech tablet – simply by taking part in a survey during a series of summer roadshows. Charnwood Borough Council wants to hear the views of residents about a range of issues - from how agencies tackle anti-social behaviour and housing to community concerns and health and fitness. Staff from the council, Leicestershire Police, Leicestershire County Council, The Bridge and other support agencies will be available for people to talk to at a series of roadshows between June and September. Residents who complete the survey will be entered into a prize draw to win a Hudl tablet donated by Tesco in Park Road, Loughborough. Councillor David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services and Chairman of the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership, said: “The roadshows are a great opportunity for our staff to speak face-toface with our residents so we can better support their neighbourhoods and improve lives. “We are offering prizes as an incentive to encourage people to take part and tell us their concerns. Not only that, but people can also report incidents to us and speak in confidence to the people who can take action to help.” Inspector Nathan Kirk, Loughborough LPU Commander, said: “We treat ASB very

seriously at Loughborough LPU and these road shows are a great opportunity for us to listen to the views of local people so that we can continue to offer a high level of service to the community.” Paul Snape, Business Support Manager at The Bridge, said: “We are committed to the multi-agency approach to managing and reducing ASB the borough. We believe that everyone should be able to feel safe in their homes and communities and the roadshows provide us with a great opportunity to listen to any concerns that people may have.” Roadshows will be held at the following: June 28 - Birstall Gala School Lane Playing Fields, Birstall between 11am and 4pm July 10 - Shelthorpe at Tesco, Park Road, Loughborough between 10am and 4pm July 26 - Warwick Way at All Together Place, 72 Warwick Way, Loughborough between 1pm and 5pm August 3 - Loughborough By the Sea Loughborough Town Centre between 12pm-4pm August 6 – National Play Days: 10am-12pm in Jubilee Park, Thorpe Acre, Loughborough & 2pm-4pm in Jubilee Park, East Goscote
