This months highlighted group is... Short carpet bowls:Meeting every Tuesday at Jubilee Hall carpark (9:30 am) where we car share to the Fosse community centre Mantle Road. Play starts about 10 am and ends at 12 noon and is attended by 16 to 20 players forming 2 pairs of teams. The game is played on an artificial surface about 25 x 5 ft. The play is similar to lawn bowls the major difference being a half width barrier in the centre of the mat, around which you must bowl. This is a very comfortable and friendly group which is not over competitive or elitist. Tea, coffee and biscuits at half time allow for a period of socialising. Carpet bowls costs £2 per week and £1 per passenger when car sharing.
Come and give it a try, we have an open door meeting 2:30, the first Wednesday of every month at Jubilee Hall Stadon Road Anstey. If you feel reticent then let us know we will partner you with a member to ensure your enjoyment.

Anstey W.I. -
Around the World in One Hour It took Phileas Fogg (according to Jules Verne) eighty days to go around the world. For members of the Anstey W.I. it took only one hour. The speaker at our last meeting was Chris Figgins who took us on her many travels over the years to all the various countries which she has visited. Her talk included a map of the world which was covered in red dots showing the places she had been along with photographs of all these places, from Peru to China, from Canada to Australia and all points in between. In May the W.I. celebrated its 100 years at its AGM in the Albert Hall in London with our secretary, Sheila Timms, representing our members. Sheila wasn't just representing us but also had the great honour of being in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. As many of you would have seen on the television news and in the newspapers, Queen Elizabeth, as a member of the W.I. Sandringham, was present for part of the AGM to help with the celebrations part of her duties being to cut the cake. However, she, herself, needed help to cut the cake. Sheila reported back to us regarding the event, the formal and the less formal business in hand, not neglecting a fashion section regarding hats. This event for her and others was certainly a once in a lifetime occasion.
Silverstone Success for the Racing Line Ex-Champion Kart Racer George Line from Thurcaston began his car racing year in some style with his Mazda MX5 sports car. A podium finish in the first round of the British Racing and Sports Car Club Mazda MX5 Super Cup National Championship at Silverstone! Not only did he come third in his CMS Cepcor Ltd car he also put up the fastest lap. George was awarded Driver of the Day for the most overtakes having been caught up in a first lap incident where he was demoted to 24th. This is a very strong start for his attack on the prestigious BRSCC National Championship. The 19 rounds are at all the major UK circuits and are being covered by Motors TV. George is sponsored by CMS Cepcor Ltd of Coalville, the biggest European manufacturer of crusher heads and equipment for the worldwide mining and quarrying industries. He is run by his step father Robin Langford past owner of Langrops in Anstey who used to compete in motorsport in the 1970’s. George is also helped by Scott Russell of First Automotive on the mechanical side and Suvi of SS Cars Roughton Street Leicester, who tries to keep up with the contact damage. The racing is very close and robust as the cars are so evenly matched. The next round is at Rockingham Motor Speedway with the British GT Championship.
Team Anstey Amblers and Runners Team Anstey Amblers and Runners started in October 2014 by Geoff Roberts and we are fast approaching 90 members of all abilities. As a club, we’re really pleased to see so many people joining, and to see the improvements that everyone is making. It’s also great to see so many people from the local community coming together and new friendships forming. As an Affiliated Club, we take part in the Leicester Road Running League races, we’ve had a great turn out of members joining in the races, but there is no pressure to. What the members have to say: “Such a friendly bunch of people” “offered me lots of support & encouragement during my training for London Marathon” “Support and encouragement for all abilities” We meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 6.45pm at the Anstey Nomads Ground, if you’d like to see what it’s like you can come along for 4 sessions before signing up as a member. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not
just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Newtown Linford Gardening Club The weather for our visit to the Barracca Gardens at Earl Shilton last month was pleasantly warm and we were able to walk round a truly delightful garden of about an acre in size. The garden was surrounded with trees and had a microclimate all of its own enabling the owners to grow plants which would probably not survive in the colder windier climate we have here in Newtown Linford. With tea and cakes to finish, it was a lovely evening. July 28th is the date of our traditional Summer Garden Party at Mike and Liz Newcombe’s house on Ulverscroft Lane. As usual the Pimms will be flowing and the menu inviting. Mountain Ash is a wonderful garden and the views over the Leicestershire countryside are stunning. We hope for a lovely sunny evening as we have had previously and then it will be a splendid occasion. Our Day-long Visit is on Tuesday 18th August and is to RHS Hyde Hall near Colchester. Our visit to Harlow Carr last year was very successful and we hope to repeat that this time. This will be the third time we will have visited one of the RHS show gardens. Not only are they spectacular but we can learn so much from their planting schemes which we can try out at home. Tickets for the visit of Chris Beardshaw in October are now sold out. We are delighted to discover his visit has proved so popular and wish our hall was even bigger so we could accommodate everyone who wants to come. Our celebrity evenings have proved very successful and mere are already planned for 2016. We have welcomed a large number of new members this year and will be pleased if others want to join us. If you are interested in our activities just contact the secretary (tel. 242452 or e-mail 01530242452@talktalk.net) , or come to one of our meetings to see how you like it before making a commitment (£2 for visitors). Alternatively give us a ring and ask for a copy of our programme for the coming year and we will be pleased to send one to you.

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate.
Updates. Anstey Library: I think it is appropriate to thank the Anstey Library Interest Group especially the Chairman Phil Knight for moving forward to keep Anstey Library open for the benefit of local residents, I know this is an important facility not only for Anstey residents but for people in surrounding villages. I understand from Phil that the Group have now been approved as a registered charity and are now the Anstey Community Library Charity. This is a significant step in taking over the Library, it is now important that residents support the Group and volunteer to help, which in my view will be vitally important for the success going forward with this project. I am told the next public meeting is to be held at the Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey on Wednesday 8th July at 7.15pm, if you can support please attend and find out how you may get involved.
Parking Restrictions I am pleased that Charnwood Borough Council’s Street Wardens are making sure that parking restrictions in Newtown Linford are being enforced. I had many concerns raised with me about inconsiderate parking of vehicles whilst people were visiting Bradgate Park. I understand that this year up to June, a total of 257 tickets have been issued. This includes enforcement with the new parking restrictions on Groby Lane and Bradgate Road.
Traveller Encampments. I have been corresponding with officers about traveller encampments on Gorse Hill, Anstey. This in response to concerns raised with me from residents and businesses in this part of Anstey. Officers at the County Council are now having a detailed look on how best to improve this area of the village. This may include moving forward to downgrading the highway to bridleway and gating this section of highway beyond the height barrier on the Leicester side of the A46. It is anticipated
that stopping access to this large area of carriageway and verge will make the whole of Gorse Hill, including the section of the Anstey side of Gorse Hill less attractive for use by travellers. This is linked with the availability of new official sites in and around Leicester which should also help reduce future problems in the area. I will keep you informed on progress with this matter.
Chairman of Leicestershire County Council. I have attended many events as Chairman over this past month. I thought you may be interested to hear about two of them. I officially opened the new Leicestershire Registration Services Register Office at Anstey Frith House, situated adjacent to County Hall. Anstey Frith House was built at the end of the 19th Century, various historical accounts describe it as a hunting lodge. Indeed I am told Frith in old English means “a forest or game reserve”. The building has now been converted sympathetically but with a contemporary feel providing a fitting new home for the register office. There are two high quality ceremony rooms giving couples choice on where to celebrate their union, a peaceful spacious waiting area and beautiful grounds surrounding the building. I am sure couples and their guests will be delighted with the new setting that Anstey Frith House has to offer.
I was invited by the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service to attend a presentation of certificates to young people who had completed a 12 week Prince’s Trust Programme. The team aims are to increase confidence, motivation and skills and as a result enable unemployed team members to move into employment or education/training. It was a pleasure to give out the certificates and to hear first-hand from team members how they had benefited from being on the programme.
Electoral Review of Leicestershire. The Local Government Boundary Commission for England has formally commenced an electoral review of Leicestershire County Council. The purpose of the review is to deliver electoral equality for voters across the County. At present, some County Councillors represent many more, or many fewer electors than their colleagues elsewhere in the County. My division of Bradgate is about in the middle, representing over 10,000 voters. The electoral review will recommend new arrangements for Leicestershire County Council, in particular, it will propose a total number of councillors elected in the future, the number of divisions, the number of councillors representing each division, division boundaries and names of divisions. On the 12th May a 10 week public consultation started, closing on 21st July 2015. After considering all representations made during this consultation the Commission intends to publish draft recommendations on October 6th 2015. There will then be a further period of consultation on draft

recommendations, final recommendations are expected to be published in April 2016. new electoral arrangements will come The into effect at the local elections in 2017.
The Commission are asking local people and organisations and will treat all for their views submissions equally and will judge each case on its merits and against statutory criteria. Planning Information.
I received information from officers at Charnwood Borough Council about understanding the planning process being made easier to follow thanks to the Council’s new on-line guide. The Council have introduced a new section called “A Guide to Planning What Why and How”, this to make website even more user friendly. The guide the covers six areas: before I apply: the planning process explained: applying for planning permission: view or comment on planning applications: planning decisions and appeals: appeals. planning
So next time you are thinking of making a planning application, or lying awake at night wanting to find out what your neighbour’s planning to build, check out with the on-line guide and find all you need to know www.charnwood.gov.uk/development_ Visit management www.charnwood.gov.uk/planning_explorer to view planning files and monitor the progress of planning applications.
They could be someone who cuts their neighbour’s grass, organises a litter pick or supports a voluntary group. Special Two Day Event. I have been asked by John Dowling on behalf of the British Legion, Anstey Branch if I would remind people about the two day event they are organising at the beginning of August. The event will again take place at the Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey on the 1st and 2nd August 10.00am until 3.00pm both days. John tells me “come along and see the vast collection of memorabilia”. I am sure these two days will be received as well as last years event. If you need to contact me on any issues write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 0HH e-mail david.snartt@leics.gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hello again everyone, I hope you are well into holiday mode now that the euphoria of ALL the recent elections as quietened down apiece. I suppose we now await the arrival of the promises that have been made being carried forward and those that were made but won’t be kept… We shall see. I remain optimistic as always. Once again I’ve been overlooked in the Queen’s Birthday honour list? Maybe my names too long for the gong! Still got New Year’s honours to come though? One, who has been honoured and a “Sir” no less, is old friend and former drummer Sir Greg Knight late of Lutterworth Road, Leicester. He is now the MP for East Yorkshire. Well done Greg. A far cry from “Knight Entertainments!”
Buggy at Braggy Park. I understand that thanks to Grants/donations from the National Lottery and the Leicestershire Free Masons. Bradgate Park Trust will be receiving a “Tramper off road mobility Scooter” for use in the park. The Tramper will give those less able bodied people the ability to see most parts of this lovely natural parkland. The service I believe will be free. Donations will of course be gratefully accepted for its up-keep and eventually the purchase of a 2nd one.
The leader of the Council will be Cllr David Slater who will have his own Cabinet. Chief Executive is Geoff Parker. (A Man City supporter! But nobody’s perfect)
My brief at Charnwood! In the new council set up at the Conservative run Charnwood Council which now as 41 Tories, 9 Labour, 1 independent and 1 Liberal Democrat (Me). I have been given a roll on the Overview scrutiny Group which oversees and responds to proposals put forward by Cabinet and the Scrutiny Panels. I have also returned to the licencing Committee after a 2 year break because of my illnesses. I am on the Charnwood Highways Forum, (as before) and Charnwood Sports And Recreation Association (CSARA) which basically gives grants to individuals with talent and local sports club. £800 is the maximum pay-out for club Facilities grant and up-to £250 for coaching courses. There are also individual starter “talent grants” to those not yet supported by their national bodies but show potential. In the past we have supported “Discus” Dan Greaves at the start of is glittering career Luke Myring (Rugby) and also a number of swimmers who have gone on to better things. Local clubs to benefit from us have been Anstey Nomads and Swifts Football Clubs, Cropston, Rothley Newtown Linford and Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Clubs.
DOGS On Leads. Sorry for going on about this again but please keep your dogs under control on the villages recreation grounds, play areas, and the cemetery. Lots of you do but some it’s not bad but it’s not Carling!! If you would like to book the Tramper or just find out more about the scheme please ring the Estates office on 0116 2362713. At the time of writing it’s NOT available at weekends, yet…
CBC the new Council set up. The New mayor for the next year will be Cllr John Capleton from Mountsorrel. The Mayoress will be Mrs Meg Jenkinson. His charities for the year will be Sorrel Youth Café a unique facility in the heart of Mountsorrel and TWENTY TWENTY which involves seeking to give bright futures for young people who are perhaps less fortunate than others. It was founded in Loughborough in 2007. John will be succeeded by is current Deputy Mayor Cllr. David Gaskell, from Birstall’s Watermead Ward, in May 2016.
Congratulations to Dan and Amanda. Anstey’s own Discus Dan Greaves has got married to his girlfriend Amanda. Lovely couple. I am sure we wish them all the best for the future. I have sent them a card, which was the least I could do in appreciation of the support I got from Dan in raising awareness of the Anthony Nolan during the “Spit for Sutty” campaign.
Latimer Street School Elections. Run by year 6 at the school, elections were held recently to find the party who would run the School for a Day near the end of term. Teacher Mr Blount was in charge and for a change I had to announce the results the day after voting ended to a very lively crowd!!
About 66% of the school actually made the effort which was pretty near the national average turn-out for the recent general election. Four parties took part in the election: - THEPP (The Honourable Education Political Party) PUBLIC (Phenomenal Unique Beautiful Logical Inspirational Children.) (Party.) - PPFP (Privacy Protection Fun Party) and TLEP (The Latimer Equality Party.) It was a close run outcome but the winners were the P.P.F.Party, by just 8 votes. Their leader is Amelia Ward. Party members include Brooke, Soloman, Jude, Dana, Ellie, Morgan and Tyler. Well done to all those that took part.
Other New... Willie Thorne. (Snooker Loopy!) Speedy and Full recovery from your medical problems. Get well soon wishes William Joseph Thorne from all of your Anstey and local Friends. Chas and Dave. We were there. My Daughter Gemma and Myself at recent Chas and Dave Boogie Woogie concert at De-Montfort Hall. My they even got ME bopping about!!! Not terribly well attended but my word it was really rockin man!! Allotments progress. Should be completed and ready for hand-over to Anstey parish Council by September 2015. ***If this edition gets to you by Friday 3rd July get down to Anstey Nomads Vinyl/ Live/silly night by 8pm. Micky Wilkes, JJ Sutt, Mick Kirby, Brian, Lynda, Big blues Mamma and even Sunny and Share! IT’S Free. - If you missed it, it was fabulous ??? And Finally with another “Sigh” NB:- I am very aware of the village of Anstey looking untidy, as do a number of villages around Charnwood. I have contacted County Hall, re Nook Island, Anstey, Groby Road from Cemetery to A50. And Anstey Lane Do it ourselves footpath from the allotments to Thurcaston village. If you want to ring County Highways please call 0116 3050001. You’ll have to press a button but usually you don’t have to wait long. (Honest) I am as always available through the usual channels and Facebook or just stop me and have a good moan!! Yours sincerely

Thurcaston and Cropston Local H In warm evening sunshine on 16th June 2015, a small group of members and guests gathered at the car park near the former site of the railway station in Barrow upon Soar to begin a guided walk around the village. Our guide was Peter Smith, who began by acknowledging the major source of his research was information gleaned from the readily available literature of the Barrow upon Soar Heritage Group. As an introduction, Peter stated that the village has evidence of Iron-age and Roman settlements. Farming and the cottage industry of framework knitting were part of its heritage, but the village is best known as a major source and producer of high quality lime. Also, in the process of quarrying for limestone at the height of the industry in the 19thC, many fossil remains were unearthed which proved to be a further source of income as so many of them were sold to collectors, such as museums. One such fossil, known locally as the “Barrow Kipper” because of its shape and appearance, is now in the New Walk Museum in Leicester. It was found by William Lee (1785-1867), described as a farmer and lime burner, but who became famous for his fossil collection – when he died his collection was sold, the majority going to the National Museum of Ireland, in Dublin! In 1953, to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, mosaics of the Barrow Kipper were made by John Ellis & Co. and installed as a centre-piece on the Jerusalem roundabout (so-called because a house named “Jerusalem” once stood on the site) near the junction with High Street and, in recent years, a variety of replica fossils have been incorporated into pavements and buildings, making interesting features around the village. Limestone quarrying and burning at Barrow upon Soar required a large workforce and generated considerable income and, apart from the quarry itself, there were numerous lime kilns for the burning process, during which carbon dioxide and water were burnt off, leaving a substance called quick-lime. Gypsum is a local form of limestone, containing calcium sulphate which, when burnt, gives off sulphur dioxide. Before the production of cement began in the 1930’s quick-lime was the main constituent of mortar, made by mixing quick-lime, sand and water. Other uses of lime were as a fertiliser in agriculture and lime mixed with water resulted in “whitewash” to paint cottage walls and outhouses. Barrow lime was known to have been used in the construction of Kirby Muxloe
14
Castle in 1480. It was also found to set well under water and in later years was used in the structure of Ramsgate Pier. An unfortunate by-product of lime burning was the sulphurous fumes that were emitted into the local surroundings and which hung like a white fog over the area. During the 19thC tuberculosis was still rife and an ill-conceived theory developed that breathing in the sulphurous fumes could be beneficial to tuberculosis sufferers – it became known as the “Barrow Cure”, but probably did more harm than good. In 1794 the River Soar was canalised and the canal was known as the “Leicester Navigation”. At the time, canals were called “navigations” to indicate they were deep enough to carry boats. Canal transport greatly aided the lime industry, enabling coal to be brought in for the lime burning process and for limestone and lime to be transported to where it was needed. Another boost to trade, which speeded up the whole process, was the opening of the Midland Counties Railway in 1840, later renamed Midland Railway and of which John Ellis became Chairman. John Ellis came from a Quaker family and was a farmer at Beaumont Leys before diversifying into industry. In the late 19thC, John Ellis & Sons had the monopoly for lime burning, progressing to making plaster and cement and, by the 1890’s, concrete products. In 1920 the Company merged with the Mountsorrel Granite Company to form John Ellis & Company. Cement production ceased in 1935, but concrete production continued and, during WW2, the Company was a major contributor to the war effort in the supply of items such as air raid shelters. After the war, new projects arose, such as construction of pre-fabricated homes to replace those destroyed by bombing. Redland took over the Company in 1960, then in 1997 Redland was taken over by Lafarge Aggregates. One significant industry remaining in Barrow upon Soar is British Gypsum Ltd which was established in 1992. It is the largest and most technologically advanced plaster production plant of its kind in the world. Barrow upon Soar had numerous inns and ale houses, presumably to cater for the needs of the industrial workforce, including the navvies who worked on the construction of the railway. Some have closed and have been put to other uses, but many remain on the same sites and two worthy of note are on North Street.

The Old Women’s Hospital on North Street, built in 1825, was also funded with money from the Babington Trust. Both buildings were originally alms-houses and are now converted to self-contained sheltered accommodation for men and women. On the corner of Beveridge Street stands the Roundhouse, built in 1827 as the village “lock-up, but is used now as an occasional exhibition hall. Behind the Roundhouse is the former blacksmith’s shop. Further along Beveridge Street stands the over 400 year old, limestone built Bishop Beveridge House, distinguished with a blue plaque indicating it as the birthplace in 1636 of William Beveridge. Several of his male relatives were vicars and he was educated at Oakham School and St. John’s College, Cambridge, later becoming chaplain to King William and Queen Mary. He was a local benefactor and set up charities for the welfare of the poor in Barrow. He became Bishop of St. Asaph’s in North Wales, but later died in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey and is buried in St. Paul’s Cathedral. Nearing the conclusion of our tour, we walked along Mill Lane towards the Navigation Inn (originally built as a house), where we stopped for some timely refreshment. From the waterside it is possible to see the site of Barrow Boating where a flour mill, dating from before 1086, was situated. The last mill was demolished in 1938, but the distinctive Georgian house built beside the canal bridge for a former mill owner remains, together with the nearby row of cottages which were for the mill workers. Finally, a gentle stroll along the canal tow path took us back towards the part of the village where we had begun our walking tour.

One of the stories in the newsletters referred to the sight of a very long RAF tender having GLIĆ“FXOW\ QHJRWLDWLQJ 7KH 1RRN roundabout and a further incident of a tracked Bren gun carrier crashing into the Plough Inn on Bradgate Road - 80 year old Brian Kibble remembers that same RAF tender was driven by Anstey serviceman Harry Allen who parked it a while next to Palmers shoe factory carrying a shot-up German plane causing quite a stir of interest in the village. Brian also remembers the Bren gun carriers who were based on the Bradgate
Park and often came down to the 1RRN IRU UHIUHVKPHQW LQ WKH &RV\ &DIÂŤ WRGD\Ĺ?V 1DWLRQZLGH

POLICEMATTERS
Crime Figures 20th April 2015 to 18th May 2015
Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 19 May 2015 and 21 June 2015 inclusive.
Burglary Dwelling – 1 Sutherington Way (Attempt)
The crime figures show a small spike in Theft from Motor Vehicles on and around the Link Rd area. 4 of the 5 thefts occurred over one night, 6th & 7th June, and involved items such as Sat Nav’s; loose change; CD’s and even paperwork. It just goes to show that any item left loose in your vehicle may be tempting enough for the thief to enter your vehicle. Please ensure that any such items are kept out of sight, and if you have a Sat Nav then please remove the cradle and the unit from the vehicle, or at least place it in the boot. If anybody has any information about this spate of thefts or saw anything suspicious on the dates in question please contact Police on 101, or speak to an officer as we patrol the village. Unfortunately, we have also reported another hanging basket theft over the period, so please take note of our advice in the previous months report regarding securing baskets with cable ties or other suitable fixings.
Burglary - 2 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage, Etc) Edward Street, Link Road
You are being watched!
Theft of Motor Vehicle – 1 Bencroft Close (M/Bike) Theft from Motor Vehicle - 6 (inc Attempts) – Link Road x 4, Balladine Road, Hollow Road Damage to Motor Vehicle – 0
We are always aware that each month we report a number of ‘Thefts’ from the Co-op Store on Cropston Rd and, whilst it appears the store is targeted excessively, unfortunately it is not just Anstey or the Co-op specifically that is targeted for theft. Store theft (Shoplifting) is unfortunately a crime that is on the rise across the City and County – but what actually is done to try and prevent it? This is where CCTV comes in, as in most stores / shops CCTV coverage is extensive. The Co-op at Anstey is no exception to this, and by working closely with the Co-op management the Police view and retrieve CCTV footage on a regular basis. Once the CCTV image of the theft suspect is recorded and supplied to Police, it is circulated force wide on our own ‘Caught on Camera’ site for officers to try and identify suspects. This system works, and over the last month we have had 4 successful identifications for theft from the Co-op, and these suspects have been or are currently being dealt with through criminal proceedings.

As I write this article it is the start of National Neighbourhood & Home Watch Week, and one of the crimes they are focussing on is Telephone Fraud. Entitled ‘Hang up on Fraud’ they are working with Financial Fraud Action UK on a campaign to combat telephone scams. Do you know who's calling you? Every year, people fall victim to fraud following a phone call. Fraudsters are posing as bank staff, police officers and other officials or companies in a position of trust. Often the fraudster will claim there has been a fraud on your account and that you need to take action. This type of fraud is called ‘Vishing’ and it’s becoming more sophisticated and widespread. Take a look at the Financial Fraud Action UK website and familiarise yourself with the ‘scams’ currently doing the rounds so you don’t get caught out! As always, we would ask all residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious person(s) or activity to Police on 101 or, if you feel a crime is taking place, 999. If you have any information at all about crime please call CRIMESTOPPERS. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. Just call – 0800 555 111

The Martin High School...
What a summer term!
We are now at the first stage of completing our 11-16 school. Our Year 11’s have finished their exams and now await results on 20th August. Year 11 students report that the exams have gone smoothly; they have certainly worked their socks off to achieve their best. Coming up we have a busy, fun end to our term. 1st July is school concert day with a host of music, drama and dance presented by MHS students. Tuesday 7th July is Sports Day; all our parents are welcome to witness the heroic performance of our students! Morning is team games and afternoon, track and athletics. Thursday is activities day with all our years either undertaking fun, challenge and sports events or on trips. For Friday 10th July, we are planning a garden party to celebrate our coming of age as an 11-16 school. We anticipate it will include stalls, main events such as tug-o-war and welly throwing, even possibly a talent show, strawberries and cream, ice creams and lashings of sunshine (we hope). We say goodbye to a number of staff who are retiring on this day. It’s good to end with a bang rather than a whimper! Do come along and enjoy the event. We have organised 75 clubs and activities for our pupils this year. Our activities have ranged from the Airfix kit club; a massive array of sports for everyone; ICT; Geography; History, Science, Technology, Art, Design and many other clubs that extend student interest and performance.
We celebrate our first Duke of Edinburgh awards as a part of this. From little acorns, oaks will grow. The following students have worked hard to achieve their and our first Duke of Edinburgh bronze awards:Rhea Chuttee Lauren Fawcett Shaniqua Gordon Chris Richards Oskar Rudczenko Well done to them all!

This month we feature the Mountain Biking at Martin High goes from strength to The Martin High Mountain biking club strength.
The sport has proven to be really successful in improving selfconfidence, team work and a sense of self-respect; all traits that will help students into adult-hood. The club recently completed the 12km red route at Sherwood Pines Trail centre in Nottinghamshire. The club meets once a week, and also trains on local trails in and around Anstey, Cropston and Bradgate.
In the photo are Mr Johnson, Tom North, Cody Chamberlain, Jamie Roughton, Josh Houghton and Mr Merrick at Sherwood Pines.
2015 to include first group of female students. The club is expanding in September our Dancing Award for Martin High Dance Squad
Thirteen of our students collectively known as the dance squad ‘Believe’ took part in the weekend 6th June. The dance focused a competition in Birmingham on of on victimisation of child soldiers all over the world, our provocative piece invited our audience to see how even the roughest and toughest children depend on our help to overcome the physical and mental torment that their superiors subject them too. Our passionate the story of two dancers took the audience on an emotional rollercoaster as we followed uniquely inspiring child soldiers, who find themselves they battle in the same rebel camp, as to keep hope alive. Well done to the following students:- Emily Hammond Erin Tattersall Beth O’Mally Chloe Poulton Emma Parker Brodie Philips-Butler
Autumn Bates Emily Baxter Alice White Bird Jasmine
Kirstie Brown Charlotte Smith Libby Parker
They were awarded for their enthusiasm and entertainment. - Drama Department
The Catering Team Once again the catering team are at the forefront of all the schools functions. They have catered for 15 functions this year which will have included the Summer Concert, The Prom, Garden Party, Induction Evenings to name but a few. On June 8th they had an unexpected visit from The Environmental Health Officer, and were awarded 5 stars for excellence! Well done to them all!
A New Era for Martin High - New Headteacher All is going well with the transition into next year. The new Head, Laura Sanchez has been busy ensuring, with Martin Furniss that the transition is smooth. Laura fell in love with the school, particularly the students. She recognises all the hard work that has been undertaken to keep it a student centred, family orientated school. She is determined to keep this and is accordingly preparing for September. She writes:-
Jake Yallop Samson Yallop Rachel Fawcett Rebecca Huss Tom Marvell
The club was devised by Mr Johnson an English teacher at the school as a way of engaging students in fun, healthy and non-competitive activity.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards
‘I am really thrilled about becoming the Head teacher at Martin High School. I have worked in a wide variety of schools and feel that I am ideally suited to working with all of the MHS community. The school has been through a huge transformation to an 11 – 16 academy and I am looking forward to being part of its continued development; it is an exciting time to be joining the school. I believe in child centered education and want to build on the schools success’s so that MHS students can achieve their dreams as happy and successful learners. My fundamental belief in the ability of education to transform the lives of young people will be integral to my work at Martin High School and I am looking forward to getting started next year!’

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY
On a bright and sunny afternoon on Monday, 8th June, Members of the Club gathered together and welcomed New Members and some Old Members, who through a change of social circumstances, were able to return to us. Our speaker, Mr Ken Goddard, whose talk was entitled “An Introduction to Classical Music”, treated us to an extravaganza of classical music, delivered in an entertaining and light-hearted manner – there was something for everyone’s tastes. Ken began his well-presented and researched talk by reminding us of the era of the BBC Radio “Light Programme” (prior to Radio 2), which provided a wide range of music programmes and was a starting point for many artistes and performers of the day. With the aid of DVD’s and a variety of examples of musical recordings and performances, Ken proceeded to induct us into a basic understanding of classical music, beginning with the types of composition and including the composers relevant to each music genre: The Concerto is written for a solo instrument,
supported by an orchestra, and consists of three movements – the first is fast (allegro), the second slow (adagio) and the third the grand finale. Violin and piano concertos are the most popular, and we heard a short piece of the 2nd movement of Bruch’s “Concerto for Violin” played by Yehudi Menuhin, who, we were astonished to hear, prepared prior to any major performance by standing on his head – perhaps it helped to improve his concentration! We then moved on to the first and last movements of Tchaikovsky’s “1st Piano Concerto” whose work is often played by the renowned Chinese pianist, Lang Lang. A Symphony is a large-scale orchestral composition, consisting of four or more movements. Haydn was one of the most prolific composers, writing 104 symphonies and other symphony composers include Mahler, Dvorak and Shostakovich – we listened to excerpts of the opening of Beethoven’s 5th symphony (rousing) and of the 5th movement of his 6th (much gentler). Opera can be described as a form of theatre, but with sung dialogue. Arias for sopranos and tenors derive from opera and, in recent years, many of the great arias have been
popularised, particularly by “The Three Tenors”, namely Luciano Pavarotti, Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo. One of the most recognisable arias is “Nessun Dorma” from “La Boheme”, which we heard sung by Pavarotti. Operetta came next (more light-hearted than opera), with an excerpt from the “Merry Widow”. Oratorios are based on a religious theme, are often staged in a cathedral and usually have four main soloists, supported by a choir. Composers include Handel, Bach, Elgar and Mendelssohn – we heard some of the “Halleluiah Chorus” from Handel’s “Messiah”. Ballet music has specific structure to suit the art-form, with Tchaikovsky being one of its great exponents – “Sleeping Beauty” was the piece we heard. We learned of Overtures and Preludes (used as introductions), examples being “The Marriage of Figaro” and the “William Tell” (Rossini) and “1812” Overtures (Tchaikovsky); Intermezzos (between scenes), examples include “Meditation” by Massenet and the delightful “Cavaliera Rusticana” by Mascagni; Tone Poems are poems set to music and “Be Still my Soul” from “Finlandia” is a classic; lastly came Canons with the example of the “Canon in G” by Pachelbel. Ken concluded his presentation by garnering audience participation as he led us in a “Last Night of the Proms” session – we joined enthusiastically in singing “Jerusalem”, “Rule Britannia” and “Land of Hope and Glory”, accompanied by energetic waving of patriotic flags which were thoughtfully supplied for our use by Ken! After such an entertaining time, plus our vocal contributions, we were very pleased to enjoy some welcome refreshments to conclude the afternoon. Our next meeting is planned for Monday 13th July at 2.30pm, when our venue will be “The Bluebell Inn” at Rothley to partake in our annual Strawberry Cream Tea – cost of the tea is £5.50 per person. Please contact Mrs Sue Wakerley on 0116 2351156 or myself on 0116 2363467 for further details. If you would care to join us, you will be most welcome.

NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW UNSECURED VEHICLES There has been a spate of incidents across the Charnwood NPA involving thefts from vehicles left unsecured overnight. Please make sure that you have left your vehicle secure at all times, and please remove any valuables from your vehicles when left unattended (including cradles for sat-navs). If you get anything taken whilst your vehicle is unsecured you are unable to claim on your insurance. Also if your dog barks in the middle of the night, and this is an unusual occurrence and you don’t want to go outside to investigate, then please phone the police using 101. They won’t mind a false alarm; they would rather you be safe than sorry.
DON'T LET GREEN FINGERED THIEVES SPRING CLEAN YOUR SHED. Many people take a great deal of trouble securing their house and the property within it...but what about sheds and garages? With the array of lawn mowers, power tools, garden equipment, bicycles, sports and other valuable equipment kept in them, security measures should certainly be put in place.
PROPERTY Gardening tools and garden furniture are not cheap - what's more they are very saleable items for the thief. Don't make it easy for them to be stolen and remember that tools stolen from your shed could be used to burgle your house. • Postcode or property mark anything in your shed or garage that is of value and might be stolen, for example, lawn mowers, garden furniture, bicycles, sports equipment. • Take photographs of expensive items - they may be useful to police to identify the goods and return them to you, should you be unfortunate enough to have them stolen. • Never leave garden tools and equipment outside, even if you are just popping back into the house. It only takes minutes for an opportunist thief to take them. • Consider fitting a pair of garage door locks that are fitted either vertically or horizontally and can be locked both from the inside and outside of the garage.
WARMER WEATHER WARNING Now that the warmer weather has decided to pay us a visit, can I please remind everyone to be very security minded when leaving windows and doors open, especially when you are leaving your property. Please remember to close all windows, and doors especially the downstairs windows before going to bed. Most of the burglaries in the summer are opportunist, so don’t become a victim.

There will also be a tombola refreshments and a silent auction bidding for a painting 20" by 24" which has been painted by a local artist and a frame has been donated by Michael Pollard a local photographer It has been decided to hold this memorial weekend following the success of the weekend last year to commemorate the end of The First World War We would like to extend our thanks to Anstey Parish Council for the use of the Hall on the two days Yours sincerely
I am now out and about again setting up new NHW schemes in Anstey. Thank you to everyone in Gorse Hill, and Cawley Field for signing up to join us. I am currently trying to set up schemes in Gynsill Close, and Arguile Avenue. If anyone from The Pastures or Mill View would like to join us, please get in touch with me. I will be along to Gynsill Lane area shortly.
CHARNWOOD ROAD Please don’t forget I am still looking for someone to come forward from Charnwood Road, to be the coordinator for this scheme. It can’t be registered as a NHW scheme unless I get a coordinator. It is not a time consuming job, you just have to be willing to act as a representative for this area. If you would like to contact me for any reason, my details are: Phone no: 0116 2365745 or email diane@ansteynhw.co.uk

JULY IN THE GARDEN
Well hopefully July is sun all the way, but this is England so probably not.
In the garden trim back faded perennials. Plants such as Lupins, hardy Geraniums and Delphiniums can be cut back to encourage fresh growth. Dead head hanging baskets and bedding to encourage fresh growth. It’s the right time of year to prune Wisteria, prune back tendrils to about 20cm from the main stem. Dead head flowering plants, eg roses. Continue to weed, now is a good time to spray pernicious weeds such as ground elder, bind weed and mares’ tail. Use a glyphosate-based weedkiller. These weeds will need spraying 2 or 3 times to get on top of them. Continue to sideshoot tomatoes and to train up strings or canes. Keep all edible crops fed and watered. Check plants daily in greenhouses and remember to open the doors and windows to allow for good ventilation. Shade as necessary using shade netting or shade paint. Feed the lawn to encourage healthy green growth. Keep the grass watered if possible during any prolonged hot spells, especially if newly seeded or turfed. If there is a prolonged dry spell raise the blades on the mower to avoid stress (on the grass, not the person mowing it). Water containers daily and feed weekly. Water collected in water butts is perfect for this or consider a watering system. If you visit the nursery ask for a demonstration of our watering system. Keep compost bins well aerated by turning regularly. Be vigilant and check plants for pests and diseases and deal with as needed. July is the month for tomato and potato blight, spray with a suitable fungicide as necessary. Have a fabulous July – enjoy the garden, (and Wimbledon), you’ve worked hard, you deserve it!
