We were wonderfully entertained at our April Meeting by Alan Mason from Lincolnshire. He has had many years’ experience working as head gardener firstly at large country houses including Hareward House and then creating gardens all over Europe. He became more widely known as the voice of television gardening for Yorkshire TV and then for Channel 4. His talk was full of funny stories mixed with slides and information about some of the great gardens overseas. This was a fine beginning to our new season.

We have two events in June. Our speaker will be Richard Woods from ‘Lilies and Chillies’ who will be talking about poisons in the garden. I don’t think we always realise that some of the plants we love can be poisonous and need to be treated with care, especially when handling them without gloves. Visitors like Richard are especially popular because they bring plants for us to buy and, like all gardeners I know, our members cannot resist a new plant or two.

NEXT ISSUE OUT

Our second event is a visit to Norwell Gardens near Newark. There is an excellent nursery there, managed by one of our previous speakers, and our visit will also coincide with the village of Norwell’s Open Gardens Weekend. This trip is on the last Sunday of the month.

Our celebrity speaker this October is the well-known garden designer and TV presenter Chris Beardshaw. We are very privileged to welcome such a prestigious guest. We are again extending an invitation to members of other gardening clubs and the wider public to come to Newtown Linford and hear him speak. He will be here on Tuesday 27th October. Tickets for this event are £10 and are now available and can be ordered from the secretary, by phone, letter or e-mail. We expect this occasion to be oversubscribed and so we urge those of you who are interested to act promptly. It should be a splendid evening. We have welcomed a large number of new members this year and will be pleased if others want to join us. If you are interested in our activities just contact the secretary (tel. 242452 or e-mail 01530242452@talktalk.net) , or come to one of our meetings to see how you like it before making a commitment (£2 for visitors). Alternatively give us a ring and ask for a copy of our programme for the coming year and we will be pleased to send one to you.

Thank You I would like to thank everybody who voted and elected me as their Borough Councillor for the next four years. I have had some fantastic support over the last few months to get me to this position. I must say a special thank you to my husband Paul, who without his support, I don’t think I would have made it to election day in one piece. It was a pleasure to meet so many residents of Anstey whilst I was out and about prior to the election and I hope to continue to meet many more residents over the coming months. I wish to send my congratulations to Cllr Sutherington on his re-election and to send my heart felt commiserations to Sue Witts who came so close to being elected. I was also re-elected to Anstey Parish Council and at the first meeting of the Parish I was a re-elected as Vice-Chairman.

Seeking Anstey Patients’ Views The NHS continues to develop in response to new treatments, aging population and limited finance. Leicestershire plans to move some diagnosis and treatment from hospitals to GPs and community based services. Nationally a 7-day week GP service is proposed. In facing these challenges and making the changes needed, patient satisfaction will be vital to success.

The next few weeks I will be spending a lot of my time in the next few weeks attending induction meetings for my new role as Borough Councillor. In the meantime I have several issues to start work on that residents have highlighted to me prior to the election. I am currently working on these and I will hopefully be able to update you on these matters in the coming months.

The Nook Car Park Following a resident’s concern, I reported that some railings were missing on the footpath leading up to the car park which was very unsafe. Charnwood Borough Council have now contacted me and the railings have been made safe with temporary netting whilst new permanent railings are on order.

Events One event happening in June is Charnwood Arts, Patchwork Picnic in the Park. It is on Saturday 13th June at Queen’s Park, Loughborough. The picnic with be opened at 12 noon by the Mayor of Charnwood. Friday 3rd July at Martin High School, Anstey. A concert performed by Ratby Co-Operative Mid Brass Band in aid of Jade's Retreat charity. The money raised will go towards purchasing a static caravan in Norfolk to provide holidays for teenagers with cancer and children with special needs. Tickets are available from the school prior to the evening or on the door. Tickets are £8 for adults, £4 for children, family ticket is £20 and does include a buffet. There will also be a raffle. Doors open at 6.30pm, concert to start at 7pm.

Recent responses to questionnaires completed by patients at Anstey Surgery show 97% would recommend the surgery to their friends and family. Many patients expressed their satisfaction but some were concerned about the appointments system and waiting times. So what matters to you? You can help by giving your views, or ideas for service improvement, on the ‘Friends and Family’ cards in the surgery waiting room or online at www.theansteysurgery.co.uk. The Anstey Patient Participation Group (PPG) seeks to represent local patients’ voices. 1st – 6th June is ‘PPG Awareness Week’ during which the surgery will be highlighting the need for more people from all age and social groups to join the PPG. Pick up a leaflet at the surgery or download one from the website to sign up to the virtual (email) participation group to be kept informed and consulted on developments. You can also join with other patients in discussions at quarterly PPG meetings to help the surgery give the best possible patient experience.

If you have any issues or comcerns, I'm here to help. Cllr Deborah Taylor 47 Charles Drive, Anstey, LE7 7BH Email: Cllr.Deborah.Taylor@charnwood.gov.uk Tel: 0116 2350126 - Twitter: @CllrDTaylor

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not

just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate.

Chairman of the County Council. It was a tremendous honour for me to be elected as the 41st Chairman of the Leicestershire County Council at the annual meeting of the County Council on Wednesday 20th May.

will be able to share with you through my reports some of the highlights during my year in office. My chosen charities throughout the year will be LOROS and the Leicester Children’s Holiday Centre (Mablethorpe).

Charnwood Borough Council Elections. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all residents living in the Forest Bradgate Ward who voted for me to continue to represent them at Charnwood Borough Council. I will do my best to represent all residents whether they voted for me or not. I was delighted that the Conservatives continue to be the administration at the Council, indeed with an increased majority of Conservative Councillors being elected, a total of 41 out of a total of 52. Local Councillors elected to Charnwood Borough Council. Anstey Ward: Deborah Taylor and John Sutherington.. Forest Bradgate Ward: David Snartt. Rothley and Thurcaston: Leon Hadji-Nikolaou and Brian Page.

Updates.

As the title suggests, the Chairman has a constitutional role within the political organisation, however, the Chairman also has a broader role in terms of engaging with the people of Leicestershire and fulfilling this remit occupies much of the civic calendar, as such the Chairman plays a key role in promoting and enhancing the civic life of the County. I am looking forward to working closely with many organisations and individuals who contribute to the life of Leicestershire, especially the many volunteers who devote their time for the benefit of others. Hopefully I

meeting I have had more concerns raised about the recent traveller encampment on Gorse Hill. I have been corresponding with officers at the County Council about what potential additional measures could be in place to overcome the issues raised with me. I understand that extending double yellow lines at the Hallgates entrance to Bradgate Park are being progressed by officers at the County Council. Several residents have contacted me about a large amount of vehicles parking across the footway making it impossible for people with pushchairs to pass safely, indeed having to walk on the road. This change will have to go through the legal process before the double yellow lines can be installed.

Alterations to The Nook, Anstey.

I was pleased to see a good number of residents at the meeting I arranged with the Anstey Parish Council to discuss the current Policing Plan for Anstey. I was pleased to hear from Sergeant Rod Smart that Police Constable, Andy Moore will be joining PCSO, Phil Wright during the month of May. I am grateful to all the residents who raised their concerns with me about the level of resource that had been allocated to Anstey under the new structure. During the meeting other issues were raised including the increase of anti-social behaviour and traveller encampments. I have already had meetings about specific incidents of anti-social behaviour with residents and officers at Charnwood Borough Council to try and resolve the outstanding issues. Since the

Part of granting planning permission for the planning application on Cropston Road was subject to certain conditions that required a transport mitigation package for The Nook to be submitted and approved before any development can commence on site. I have been assured I will have an opportunity, along with other interested parties to comment on the mitigation package. Any comments will be considered and if there are any significant issues arising from the consultation, these will be presented to a Planning Committee at Charnwood Borough Council for further consideration. If you need to contact me on any issue write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 0HH e-mail david.snartt@leics.gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804.

Anstey Town Charity Grants At the annual grants meeting of the Anstey Town Charity eleven local groups and organisations were awarded just over £2,900 to help them in their various projects and needs. Villages churches in particular benefitted, with St Mary’s and the Anstey Methodist Church receiving £500 and £400 respectively. The Anstey Gala once again was supported with a £500 grant to help with Gala Day attractions. The Anstey Youth Café and Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme at the Martin High School received £250 each. A new applicant, the Anstey Library Interest Group were awarded £500 to help them to get their community project started. Other successful applicants included the Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club, the Anstey Nomads, Gynsill Lawn Tennis Club and the Bradgate Twinning Association. During the last 10 years the Charity has awarded over £25,000 to some 30 local applicants. Applications for next years Grants must be received by the 31st of January 2016. For further details ring Ken Schofield on 220 7552.

We Need Your Help.

The charity, under the terms of its scheme laid down by the Charity Commission, cannot invest any of its income, this must be given to the community of Anstey. However the Anstey Town Charity is able to invest grants and donations with the Charities Investment Fund. With increasing demands for finacial support the 9 unpaid Trustees are anxious to attract this kind of funding from local bodies and individuals, perhaps in memory of a loved one or in appreciation of the work done by the Charity on behalf the village. They are very grateful for the support they receive from the Anstey Parish Council and the Gala Committee but hope that groups who have benefitted from their grants may feel able to make donations to the Anstey Town Charity to enhance their work in the local community.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Well everyone “Sutherington survived the Slaughter” but only because of my continued support in Anstey. Thank you to all those responsible for me retaining my Charnwood Borough and Anstey Parish Council seat. The Borough Council count was nerve racking but I got there after a re-count! Having stopped up for most of the night watching the results unfurl, I wondered if I would get any votes at all… However the parish vote was overwhelming with over 2000 votes in my favour. I have met up with our new MP Edward Argar who has taken over from the long standing Stephen Dorrell. I hope to be able to work with him and Debbie Taylor over the next 4 years, for the good of Anstey and when needed the rest of the Charnwood constituency?

Cancer Care! Yes women going through the trauma of cancer are being offered a “Free” makeover to help with their self-esteem and confidence. The “Good lifefeel better” charity was set up a number of years ago, the photographic makeover day is to be held on Sunday 7th. June 2015. 10am to 4pm. At the Tesco Community Room, Park Road, Loughborough. It is all being set up by make-up artist Sue York and photographer Michelle Kemp. For more information please get in touch with sueyorkmakeupartist@ntlworld.com

Borough and Anstey for many years. And well done to his wife Pauline for keeping him going!!!

Bradgate Park “Them Dogs” I read with despair that, despite notices, more deer have been chased by unruly dogs! I understand that a decision has been taken by the Park’s trustees that temporary signs “Dogs on Leads” will be put up around the park during June and July. This is when a large number of “Does” will be heavily pregnant. It seems to me, like many things, a few mindless idiots (it’s not the dogs fault!) could spoil things for the many who do have well behaved dogs.

The Thrill as gone? Sadly at the age of 89 legendary blues guitarist Riley B. King (B.B. King) as passed away in a hospice in Las Vegas, USA. Considered one of the best blues guitarists in the world, he and his trusty guitar “Lucille” made over 15,000 live appearances worldwide in his long career, and recorded over 40 studio albums. I have about 6. His best in my consideration is “Riding with the king” with a bloke called Eric Clapton? I did see him in a very live performance in the De Montfort Hall gardens Leicester in 2000. Absolutely brilliant. Sweet little angel!

Happy retirement “Mr Mayor!” My fellow Anstey councillor and Charnwood’s Mayor until June 1st. Cllr. Paul Day as stood down as a Borough councillor after 2 stints totalling almost 20 years. I attende the Mayors Annual Charities award ceremony recently when 2 cheques of £2,850 each were presented by the Mayor to: Canine Partners, trained dogs for the disabled and Excirio, halfway houses for the vulnerable, of which we have 7 in Loughborough and 2 in Coalville. Happy retirement Paul who has served the

The old Conservative club where you practiced standing on an empty crate of beer many years ago, has close and the snooker table has gone. (I’m not sure about the crate?) But Neil Spink’s “Sports Bar” is now there and has 2 pool tables. Sky TV and next season every Leicester City football Club match “Live and…Free!”

Food Banks? Just a reminder that the nearest one is in Rothley. It is open every Monday 11am to 1pm. They got some bad press in the run up to the election, but take it from me they are good people that run this one. If you are in a mess and you have trouble even getting there, please ring me in confidence and I’ll take you there. Going through the door is a bit daunting. It’s best to ring for a time slot. Vinyl Night+ at Nomads. The next Micky Wilkes and special guests mad vinyl night and nearly live acts will be held at Anstey Nomads FC ground on Friday July 3rd. from 8pm. Same programme as before with a charity raffle and some daft antics! Also free to get in but still only a Fiver to leave before the end!!! We like a captive audience!! As always I am available at any reasonable time, and now on Facebook.

Willie “Joseph” Thorne. Disturbing to read about real snooker legend, Anstey’s Willie Thorne as unfortunately got himself into serious debt again. If ever you want to come home Willie you know where your REAL friends still are.

FLYER

And finally. Thank you to those who sent me a Birthday Card and text messages. At my age rolling out of bed in the morning is no problem. Now getting up off the floor is another story. ☺ ☺ ☺ Yours Sincererly.

RSPCA - Please support our fundraising events. The Leicestershire branch of the RSPCA are organising a number of fund raising events during the Summer.

Anstey W.I. - Fifty Shades of Blue Well, not actually fifty shades of blue only 24 shades of blue as the Anstey W.I. members arrived for their monthly meeting wearing something in blue. The reason for this was that our member Chris Figgins had devised a quiz consisting of fifty questions with the word “blue” in all the answers, so this wasn't another best selling “blue” book! That was only part of the agenda for the evening as members were also taking part in three competitions for which the winners received trophies. Beryl Boyes won first place for her craft entry, Liz Heggs (a new member) for her scones and Elizabeth Robinson for her flower arrangement in a glass. The trophies were handed to our winners by our Madam President (as she should be called according to the “Home Fires” programme), proud winners all of them. The third part of the evening was taken up with the serious business of voting for the resolution which would be presented to the countries members and this was with regards to the care of the present and future population who fall ill or are in need of personal care or some form of help whether medical, social or personal.

On Saturday the 13th of June they are holding another of their popular Car Boot Sales at the Woodside Animal Centre on Scudamore Road Leicester from 11am to 3pm. There are a limited number of spaces so it is wise to check with Jade on 232 4932 –office hours or Ken on 220 7552 to book or for further information. They are also holding an open garden from 10am to 4pm at 44 Triumph Road, Glenfield on Sunday in the 19th of July in aid of the Animal Centre. Refreshments are also available with RSPCA goods for sale, a plant stall and a tombola. There is also garden trail for children to enjoy. So please come along to these fund raisers. The Centre deals with around three thousand neglected, abandoned and neglected animals every year and desperately need your support.

Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club May 2015 Report - By Phil Vose, Chairman Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club have started the 2015 season and had mixed fortunes to date. The first team play in Division 6 West and the second team participate in Division 8 West. Both teams will be looking to consolidate their positions in both divisions and look forward to some competitive cricket ahead. The first team have had a difficult start to life in Division 6 West following last year’s promotion, where they have been hit by a few injuries. They have been involved in some very competitive matches with their only victory to date coming again Walton. However, they were extremely unlucky against Appleby Magna and UT XI when they lost by 1 wicket and 5 runs respectively. The bowlers have been led brilliantly by Chamilka Mewan, who has so far had 2 five wicket hauls and notched nearly 20 wickets – a fantastic effort! They will be hoping for improved fortunes over the next few weeks. The second team will be hoping to improve on last year’s disappointing campaign when they finished 9th in Division 8 West. The

12

second XI to date had a difficult first match against Loughborough University Staff losing by 86 runs, have achieved a victory against Aryans and a closely fought defeat against Fatana. Positive results will be sought throughout the first half of the season. The playing side of the club has been strengthened during the winter and at the beginning of this season with opening batsman Ravi Maharajan, bowler Nilesh Patel and Abbas Khan all joining the club. The club have been training at Beaumont Leys School during the off season and some of this practice has been vital in preparing the players for the summer months. The first Sunday friendly of the year is due to take place on 7th June with the club also taking part in the Twenty20 County Shield. Other friendly matches will be taking place later in the season and the club are hosting a limited overs tournament on Sunday 19th July involving Asian Sports, Gracedieu Park and Appleby Magna. During the winter, the players have been

attending nets at Beaumont Leys School and some of the club members have been working down at the ground helping to prepare it for the new season. The ground is in an excellent state thanks to the efforts of our hard working ground staff. If you are interested in joining the club, please email our secretary Amanda Wilkes. Amanda’s email address is amandaandcharlie@btinternet.com. We are also now hosting weekly training sessions at the Gynsill Lane ground on Wednesdays from 5.30pm, so if you’re interested in playing for the club, why not come down and practice. Please also visit our website at http://ansteyandglenfield.play-cricket.com and Facebook page for regular updates, results and news throughout the season.

CASH to Revive Empty Homes. (It’s STILL there!) Dear All. As I reported in March 2015. Empty and derelict properties could be brought back to life thanks to a council funding pot. We have at Charnwood Borough Council around £45,000 up for grabs for homeowners looking for cash to prepare their property for the rental market. Unbelievably the money is STILL available. The Partnership Grant can be used to pay for essential work including re-wiring, new windows and doors and is designed to bring properties that have been empty for longer than six months back into use. The homeowner has to contribute towards the costs and also agree to rent out the property once the work is completed. “We would especially like to hear from owners of 2 bedroom properties because there is a shortage of these homes across Charnwood. Get in touch anyway… “Our Housing team at CBC is committed to working with homeowners and landlords to ensure the private rented sector is the best it can be.” In the past five years, the Council has awarded four grants, worth a total of £40,000, to support people looking to revive homes. These have covered work including the installation of new windows and doors and replacement kitchens and bathrooms. A maximum of £15,000 can be awarded at once, to cover 50% of the cost of building and restoration work. This is good news, so please get in touch NOW! As far as I know there is NO catch. For more information on partnership grants and how to apply visit:-www.charnwood.gov.uk/grants_for_owner_occupiers Email:- private.housing@charnwood.gov.uk Tel:- 01509 634651.

Yours Cllr. John J. Sutherington.

ANSTEY UNITED REFORMED CHURCH

The church buildings are situated on Bradgate Road, the main road running through the village leading to Bradgate Park. This is an active church which has been part of village life since 1851. In addition to weekly Sunday morning services, at 10.30am, many activities take place here, some weekly some less frequent. For example, weekly sequence dancing with Joan and Brian on Wednesday between 7 and 9pm, and coffeee mornings, normally on the first Saturday of each month. (For more information please visit our website http://www.ansteyurc.com) Anstey United reformed Church offer an hour of "Quiet Time" on Wednesday Mornings between 11am and Noon. This provides the opportunity for anyone to leave the hustle and bustle of life and just sit quietly. A church member is available for any queries or for a chat, if required. Less frequent events include Spring and Christmas Fairs and "Soup-a-lunch" during Christian aid week. The Church also supports village events such as the Anstey Christmas Gala and village societies, such as U3A, by providing rooms at reasonable rates. The Buildings are home to Anstey Players with at least two perfomabnces annually. Several rooms within the buildings are available for hire, including a newly revamped Upstairs Meeting Room. Anstey Parish Council Annual Report 2014/2015

Anstey Parish Council Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road Anstey Leicester, LE7 7AY Tel: 0116 236 2646 e-mail: ansteypc@btconnect.com www.ansteypc.org.uk [Office open 10.00 to noon Monday – Friday excluding bank holidays] Produced by Anstey Parish Council 16

March 2015

t: 0800 6446 150 • e: yourlocal@openboxpromotions.co.uk • w: www.openboxpromotions.co.uk

Annual Report Purpose of the Report 1.

To give details of the achievements of the Parish Council over the last 12 months and to set out the Council’s priorities for 2015/16. APC is made up of 14 members and has five Committees or Working parties to help carry out the work of the Parish Council.

Achievements 2.

Over the past 12 months, the Parish Council and its staff have continued to be very active in maintaining and developing its community assets within the village.

3.

The main assets of the Council are: The Jubilee Hall, which continues to be very well used by village organisations; (and the income continues to cover the loan interest repayments). The Stadon Road Recreation Ground, which includes the 2 equipped play areas, the multi-use games area and the War Memorial. The top green on Bradgate Road. The lower green by the brook on Leicester Road, including the Packhorse Bridge (a scheduled ancient monument). The cemetery on Groby Road. Mitchells Field on Cropston Road. Link Road Playing Fields, which includes the rugby pitch. The Scout Hut which is leased to the local Scout Group. The public toilets in The Nook car park.

4.

I should also mention that the Parish Council continues to provide Christmas lights in the centre of the village.

5.

The main focus during the past 12 months has been to ensure that all of these assets are kept in good repair for the benefit of the residents of Anstey.

Main Achievements in 2014/15 6.

There have been a number of notable achievements over the past 12 months:

A total of 40 planning applications have been considered in meetings with significant housing applications at Gynsill Lane, Groby Road, Bradgate Road and Cropston Road. The Parish Council has worked hard in collating information to make planning comments on these applications.

The installation of two new bus shelters at Link Road.

t: 0800 6446 150 • e: yourlocal@openboxpromotions.co.uk • w: www.openboxpromotions.co.uk

17

The new play area at Long Close which has been funded by the Wilson Homes development. This is currently looked after by Charnwood Borough Council but will become the responsibility of the Parish Council in due course.

In connection with the amount of planning applications for consideration in the Village, the Parish Council commissioned a ‘Character Landscape Assessment’, which helped inform planning observation.

Support for fund raising and charitable events.

Providing grants to support such groups as the Anstey Youth Café, Anstey Town Charity, Anstey Library Interest Group, Anstey Nomads FC, Christmas Day Lunch, The Royal British Legion, Churches together in Anstey and the Save Anstey group.

The purchase of a new vehicle DFSK Big Cab.

Welcomed a “New” Councillor – Emma Bown.

Working together with Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council on areas of work that fall under their jurisdiction. For example: highways, street lighting and planning.

Presentations have been made to the Council by the Environment Agency, the Police and the Leicestershire County Council IMPACT team.

Priorities for 2015/16 7.

As stated above, the Parish Council continues to develop its existing assets and to acquire further assets that it considers will be beneficial to the village.

8.

The priorities for the Parish Council are considered at their Annual Parish Meeting in May.

9.

The Council currently have the following as their priorities: To continue to work with the Anstey Nomads, Anstey Swifts, Charnwood Borough Council and the County FA to try to develop Mitchells Field for wider community use. To continue discussions with Charnwood BC and David Wilson Homes to have the new open space areas adjacent to Long Close (off Bradgate Road) transferred to the Parish Council, together with funds to allow the areas to be maintained by the Parish over the next 10 years. To respond on behalf of the community to the Draft Charnwood Local Plan. To work with Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council to ensure that the community assets to be provided by the developers of the Groby Road housing development are fully implemented.

18

t: 0800 6446 150 • e: yourlocal@openboxpromotions.co.uk • w: www.openboxpromotions.co.uk

To work with the Davidsons Homes on the arrangements for the transfer of assets to the Parish Council including additional public open space, cemetery extension and an allotment site To work in partnership with Martin High School to ensure that the School has the ability to continue the education of local children to a high standard, with access to recreational facilities that could be also used by the Community. To support local groups to create a sustainable community within Anstey. The Quality Scheme for Parish Council has been replaced by a new aspirational award scheme for Town and Parish Council this year Anstey hopes to gain recognition within this scheme. 10.

However, it should be noted that, in addition to the above, the day-to-day workload of the Parish Clerk and her staff is equally important and however much we aspire to achieve the proposals outlined above, we often find that we have to wait on the actions of other organisations before we can move forward. Much of the time of the Parish Clerk has again this year been spend on planning issues that will affect Anstey.

11.

Residents will also realise that the possible development of other assets in the village will have to be considered to be secondary priorities and, as such, proposals for the Link Road playing fields will have to be put on hold for the time being.

Financial Information 12. The Parish Council recognises that we all operate within difficult economic times with Central Government funding cuts. For 2015/16 the Parish Council has NOT increased the precept. Although there will be no financial increase to residents the amount of money raised will increase, this is due to the way in which the tax base figure is calculated. The Parish Council are aware of the financial pressures that Anstey residents face and are keen not to add to these. In their considerations the Parish Council recognise that Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council are considering financial cuts and the Parish Council needs to be in a position to support local services. The growing population increases the need for more money to support it. There will be an increase in public open spaces that the Parish Council are responsible for and budgets are in place to maintain them. The new allotment site on Groby Road will need financial input to get it up and running. 13.

The full unaudited Statements of Accounts for 2014/15 can be viewed during the Audit process for the Council and copies of these are made available at the Parish Meeting.

Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society On 19th May 2015 it was a pleasure to welcome Richard Knox, Heritage Development Manager with Leicestershire County Council, for a return visit, this time to speak about “The Medieval Knight”. His highly entertaining and beautifully illustrated talk began with a review of how a young man was trained to become a knight during the period of the 11th through to the end of the 15th Centuries. Training began in earnest from the age of 5 years when a boy learnt from his mother the basic social skills, such as courtesy and etiquette, as well as reading and writing, that he would require in order to succeed. Interestingly in this respect, medieval gentlewomen were often better educated than their male counterparts, the latter’s education having greater focus on martial accomplishments rather than scholarly studies. By the age of 7 years a boy would proceed to the next stage when a suitable sponsor would provide a position for him as a page in their household. The future King Richard III spent his time as a page at Raglan Castle where the Earl of Warwick was his sponsor. Between the ages of 14 and 21 years the fledgling knight would remain in his sponsor’s household, with his role progressing to that of a squire. Throughout these sponsored years, his tuition would continue, to include essentials such as household skills, social interaction, riding, hunting, tilting skills and martial training. By the age of 21 years, provided he had achieved all his training objectives satisfactorily, he would be considered to be fully prepared for the role of a knight. However, if this was not the case or the young man felt unable to take on the role expected of him, he could opt out by paying a forfeit to the King and assuming the lesser rank of an esquire.

The actual ritual of creating a knight was full of Christian symbolism and was a major event in the young man’s life. He would spend the day and night before the ceremony in church, in prayerful supplication as preparation for the responsibilities expected of him. Knights invariably came from an elite group of landowners with established status within the hierarchy, and the act of being knighted and presented with his shield, sword and spurs confirmed that status. Also, one of his most valuable assets would be a well-trained war horse. On taking up his newly-bestowed role, there were many duties expected of a knight, including military service to his liege lord, providing charity to the poor, upholding Christianity, meeting out justice by running the Manorial Court, running his estate/s through a steward and bailiff, enacting duties bestowed by the King (but in so-doing not offending the King by assuming too much power) and honouring the code of chivalry. If in favour with the monarch, there could be many rewards, but if a knight brought about royal displeasure, there could be dire consequences, such as confiscation of property and land, or much worse! Richard then informed us of other aspects of medieval knighthood. Heraldry concerned the right to bear arms and to have a family crest. Crests were carried in battle and were a means of identity, particularly when their owner was killed or injured in combat (hence the term “crestfallen”). King Richard III set up rules to control and standardise the issue of crests. A knight’s home was usually a castle or moated manor house and we are fortunate in Leicestershire to have many examples, albeit the majority in ruins, such as Ashby, Kirby Muxloe, Mountsorrel and Oakham. We were shown some exquisite illustrations of the

knight and the etiquette of courtly love, the knight at work and play (hunting, estate business, training for war, jousting and tilting, hand tennis, chess) and the knight at war (raising/equipping/feeding an army for whatever cause, e.g. the Crusades, pledging allegiances, providing his own armour and that of his war horse). Richard showed us examples of different types of armour, from chain maille that was worn over a tunic, to the eventual introduction of plate armour. Later, chain maille and plate armour were worn in combination to give greater protection. The knight and his horse were highly valuable commodities – if a knight was unfortunate enough to be taken captive in battle, he was an asset to be held to ransom and when his family paid up he might be released, but his captors would retain his sword and his horse! Upon the death of a knight, it was customary that his eldest son would inherit his father’s land and estates. If there was no son, it was possible for the knight’s widow to inherit, but she would be expected to remarry, thereby passing on her late husband’s assets to her new husband, because it was not acceptable for women to own land in their own right!

Survey finds low levels of housing needs for local people The report of Thurcaston and Cropston’s Housing Needs Survey has been published. The survey was conducted in order to obtain clear evidence of any local housing need for a range of housing tenures for Parish residents. Almost a third of households responded to the survey which is considered good response rate for a survey of this type. Responses were overwhelmingly positive in terms of the Parish itself however around two thirds of respondents felt that no further homes were needed. In spite of this, over 40% of respondents said that they would support a small development of affordable housing for people with a local connection. Despite this underlying feeling of support for ‘local homes for local people’ (particularly affordable homes) the survey did not identify a level of need that could realistically lead to the possibility of a small scheme of affordable homes being explored further. The survey found that 1 affordable home and 6 market homes would be required to meet local housing needs. The results were cross referenced with Charnwood Borough Council’s housing register and the affordable housing need levels were confirmed as just 1 household being in need of an affordable home in the Parish. So what happens now? If no other housing needs are identified it is likely that the report will simply be placed on record. It is valid for 5 years and can be referred to by the Parish Council and Borough Council should any development be proposed in the future. However, if you did not fill in a questionnaire but feel that you are in housing need then please get in touch with Midlands Rural Housing by the end of June. If a larger affordable housing need is found then it may be that the possibility of exploring a local scheme could be consulted on further. Once we are satisfied that the results of the survey have captured the housing needs as far as possible the report will be placed on record. If you have any questions or wish to register a local housing need, please contact enquiries@midlandsrural.org.uk

JUNE NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW PHONE 101 It has been brought to my attention that people are experiencing small thefts from gardens and antisocial behaviour, and not reporting them to the Police. If you don’t report them, then the Police can’t investigate them. Please phone the Police on 101, or your get in touch with your NHW who will do it on your behalf.

WARMER WEATHER Hopefully we should be experiencing some warmer soon, and people will be tempted to open their windows. If you leave the room or go out please remember to close them again. It only takes a burglar a minute to enter your property. If you are going on holiday this summer, please remember to advise your children NOT to tell ALL their Facebook friends that they are away. You might come home to a very empty house.

NEW SCHEMES Once the weather warms up a bit I shall be out and about again setting up new NHW schemes. This year I will be heading to the Gorse Hill and Gynsill Close areas first, so please think about being a coordinator for your street before I come calling on you. This would make my life a lot easier and get your scheme up and running a lot quicker.

NEW WEB SITE I am pleased to say that Simon Pizzey is going to be in charge of our new Web Site, so hopefully it will be up and running soon. We will let you all know the web site address and how you can access it once it is up and running. It is based on the Neighbourhood Alert system so you should be able to receive all the latest scams, as well as news from Anstey NHW. It will also allow you to check if your street is in a NHW scheme or not.

NEW CHARNWOOD NPA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE I am hoping that once the old North Area NHW exec committee is dissolved, (later this month) I can then get working on setting up the new committee. I am hoping to be elected as Chairman, and Neil Asher from Mountsorrel the treasurer. If anyone else from Cropston, Thurcaston, Newtown Linford, Swithland, Woodhouse or Woodhouse Eaves NHW schemes would like to stand as Vice Chair or secretary can you please let me know. I would very much like to get all the NHW village schemes within the Charnwood Area involved in this new venture. You would then all get your views heard, and not just those of the few. If you would like to contact me, my details are: Phone: 0116 2365745 or email diane@ansteynhw.co.uk

Hormone that proves you really do love your dog like a member of the family IF YOU HAVE ever gazed into your beloved dog’s eyes and felt that you found love there, you were right. Now a hormone has been found that indicates that we love our pets in the same way as we love our children – and the feeling is mutual: our pets love us back in the same way. Researchers have found that the levels of the hormone oxytocin increase in both human and canine brains when a dog is gazing at its owner. Oxytocin is already known to play a strong part in triggering that feeling of unconditional love and protection that a parent and child enjoy. Scientists believe that oxytocin may create a ‘neural feedback loop’ that has strengthened the bond between humans and dog for centuries. “They became attuned to our social cues in the way that young children are.… When dogs are presented with an impossible task they quickly turn to humans to see what to do, just like children do. Wolves don’t do that, even when raised in captivity.” The study was published in the journal Science.

POLICEMATTERS

Crime Figures 20th April 2015 to 18th May 2015

Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 20 April 2015 and 18 May 2015 inclusive. Thefts from vehicles (particularly Vans) has thankfully decreased to zero this period, however we need to remain vigilant and continue to report any suspicious activity especially around work vans. We often say to residents that if something doesn’t look right then report it using the appropriate method (telephone number 101 if not urgent, or 999 if you feel urgent assistance is required). This is good advice in any situation, and recently two concerned members of the community working at a business on Leicester Rd did just this by following their ‘gut feeling’ and reporting the strange behaviour of a young girl they spotted outside of their office window. This led to Police attending and locating a missing vulnerable young girl who was re-united with a very concerned family. Had the two ladies involved not followed through with their initial concern and contacted Police, then this could have led to a long and difficult missing person case and the obvious distress and worry that this would have brought upon the young girls family. This is an excellent example of the community working together with Police, but more importantly it shows that sometimes going with your ‘gut feeling’ that something just isn’t right can lead to positive results. We have thanked the ladies personally for their call and help in this matter, but we would like to thank them again through this article for their community spirit and caring concern.

‘Green Fingers’ It is the time now to start to put out hardy plants and hanging baskets (so I have been told! – I am certainly no Alan Titchmarsh!), but unfortunately I have received a couple of reports that some hanging baskets and pot plants have been taken from peoples properties recently. This type of crime does rise during this time of year, and whilst it can be very difficult to ‘secure’ hanging baskets and pot plants it is worth trying to do so as they can be very expensive items once all the plants are in. One easy method to secure hanging baskets to brackets is by using cable ties and pulling the tie up very tight. This will make it quite difficult for the offender to cut the tie itself, and this should be enough for them to move elsewhere. It is sad that these measures are required, but if it can save your expensive hanging baskets from disappearing it is worth doing.

Anti-Social Behaviour As discussed in the last article, I can report that Police recently attended Martin High School to assist Charnwood Borough Council Anti-Social Behaviour teams deliver assemblies to pupils to highlight the impact ASB can have in the community. Small pockets of ASB are still occurring within the village, and since the last report we have issued further ASB warning letters to offenders in company of parents. We will continue to challenge this behaviour, in partnership with our council and Youth Offending Service colleagues.

The Martin High School...

This is an exciting time for everyone at the Martin High School. Our first Year 11 begin their GCSE examinations next week. By the time you read this item, the exams will be almost completed. For many years you, our community, have wanted the MHS to make this conversion. We began the process in 2011. Four years later the school is nearing the first stage of its development. The support for this change has been phenomenal. Over the last two years our pupils have tolerated living on a building site while the school has grown by 50% from 600 to 900 pupils. Our parents have been incredibly supportive as we have designed and developed our new school. The proof is in the pudding. The Year 11 students have been determined to really work to their potential. We are quietly confident that they will do very well in this summer’s GCSE examinations. Their success will seal the first stage of our development. The conversion to 11-16 has only been about providing for our pupils’ needs and best serving our community. Our pupils are great learners. Given opportunity they will work and achieve really well. The MHS is definitely your school. It has been created by the will of our parents, the skill of our teachers and the determination of our pupils. For the past 24 years I have immensely enjoyed being Head at the school. This school is very special to me. We have built a school that is focussed on developing our children into determined, moral, happy young adults. It has been my privilege to serve this community, you and your children. At the end of this first stage of development it is time for me at 60 to retire and hand on the baton to a brilliant new Head, Laura Sanchez. Laura fell in love with the school the moment she arrived. She recognises and values the relationships and the strong sense of community that embody the Martin High School. She is totally committed to the school and is energised by the thought of becoming the Head and moving it forward to greater success.

“When I was going through a difficult time, the first person I turned to was Mr Furniss. He is kind and compassionate with a heart of gold. He lives and breathes this school, and it will be a lesser place without him. I want to thank him for his hard work and dedication. I hope he enjoys his retirement......he deserves it.”

There is a scale from totally beneficial to absolute pest, and many organisms come in the middle. To explain this point, Simon referred to wasps. Wasps are the gardener’s friend at some stage in the year because they feed aphids to their young, but later in the year they can be a nuisance.

Simon’s overall view was that we should ‘garden the soil’. The idea behind this is that if we get the soil right for the plants we are trying to grow, then success is more likely. This is not a new idea! As an example, Simon referred to crop rotation which has been practiced for thousands of years. The main reasons for rotating the four main crop families – brassicas, legumes, alliums, and root crops – is to avoid nutrient depletion and reduce disease. Simon also talked about the soil conditions needed to grow the different crops.

The talk was supported by many excellent photos. Also, Simon ‘walked us through his garden’ with a series of slides to reinforce many of the points he made in his talk. This was a very informative talk which created a lot of interest and many questions. The gardening club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall. Whether an experienced gardener or an enthusiastic beginner we are sure you will something of interest in this year’s programme. New members are made most welcome. What’s more, it is excellent value!! The membership fee is ÂŁ12 for the year or ÂŁ3.00 per meeting. And, if you would like to come as a visitor and then you decide to join, your visitor fee will be refunded!! So, if you are interested in gardening - come and give the Club a try.

Simon spent some time talking about different ways to enrich the soil, including compost, liquid feed made from comfrey, and green manures. The aim is also to encourage a healthy earthworm population. Worms improve drainage, improve soil structure, and release nutrients.

For tickets contact Peter and Iris Sayer on 01530 243822.

Another important aspect of the talk was helping us understand how nature works, and the connection between fungi and healthy root growth. He also talked a lot about encouraging wildlife into our gardens. Many insects, most fungi, most birds and some animals are beneficial in our gardens and some are pests.

Enigma A talk by Dr Mark Baldwin, for the Friends of Charnwood Forest was held atWoodhouse Eaves Village Hall on Monday 27th April. There was a record turn-out for the latest talk for Friends of Charnwood Forest. The Village Hall was absolutely full with over 125 enthralled listeners. There were about 50 non member guests and during the evening 10 new members joined the society. Dr Mark Baldwin was a brilliant speaker. More than an hour without a note and twenty minutes of questions. He brought with him an actual Enigma machine which fascinated members for nearly an hour after the talk.

The May meeting of the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club was entitled Wildlife: The Environment & Organic Gardening. Our speaker, Simon Gulliver, a National Trust Consultant, showed us how to be kind to nature and still have a beautiful and productive garden.

Saturday 11th July Visit to Waterperry Gardens, Oxfordshire

This visit is now full. Wednesday 12th August, 7.45pm ‘A Van Full of Colour’ – Ady Dayman

Dr Baldwin has been involved in talks, publications and shows on various subjects related to Bletchley Park and the codebreakers there, including the Enigma machine, for many years. Beaumanor Hall was a listening post for Bletchley Park.

A very popular panellist on Radio Leicester’s ‘Down to Earth’, Ady will give us a masterclass on seasonal plant care in his own inimitable comic style. Choosing a wide selection of annuals and perennials, he will help us to get the very best from each of them.

As usual the evening concluded with drinks and nibbles when members were able to talk to each other as well as the speaker. Further information--Peter Bertram 0116 2100572 or www.focf.org.uk

Film Presentations

From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council Our narrator in "The Grand Budapest Hotel" related the adventures of a famous concierge at this famous hotel between WW1and WW2. He told us about Zero Mustafa, the lobby boy, who became his most trusted friend. There were so many life-changing events including a murder, an interment camp, an escape mission, and the war effort headquarters being right there in the Grand Budapest Hotel. This was a beautifully crafted amusing drama, deserving it's four Oscar awards and five Baftas.

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY, CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY

The “Woods” Coach left Cropston at 8.45am and went on to Rothley for a 9.00am start for a wonderful trip to Ludlow, in Shropshire. We were blessed with sunshine and a temperature worthy of a good Summer’s day which lasted for the entire time. We travelled through some beautiful Countryside in a well-appointed Coach. On arrival in Ludlow, the Membership broke up to wander through the various streets lined with a mixture of different century buildings from Norman through to predominately 15th Century, shadowed by the once magnificent Ludlow Castle constructed in the late 11th Century, as a border stronghold. It was enlarged into a Royal Palace in the 14th Century and later under the ownership of Richard, Duke of York, was involved in the Wars of the Roses. Edward 1V at one time sent the Prince of Wales and his brother (famous brothers in the Tower of London) to live in the Castle which was also the seat of government for Wales and the Border Counties.

will be shown on Friday June 12th and lasts 123 minutes. This is the extraordinary true story of Jane and Stephen Hawking, starring Felicity Jones who won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and Eddie Redmayne who won the Golden Globe and Oscar for Best Actor. Defying the death sentence of motor neurone disease, Stephen Hawking married Jane, raised a family and altered drastically our perception of the universe by searching for a single equation to explain everything. Our June film is based on the memoirs of Jane Wilde Hawking.

Enjoy your summer! Our next film will be shown on Friday September 11th.

Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £5 and concessions are £4.50. There will be refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets can be purchased via the parish office - 0116 236 7626 or at the door.

Subsequently Prince Arthur the elder brother of Henry Vlll honeymooned with his wife Catherine of Aragon, before his early death. From 1525 to 1528 Queen Mary (known as “Bloody Mary”) spent three winters at Ludlow. Since 1811 the Castle has been privately owned by the Earls of Powys but open to the Public most days. However, the Castle was unfortunately closed for our inspection, but we learnt of its long history which was evident from its mixed architecture – Norman, Medieval and Tudor buildings, many of which still stand! Some Members were able to get a good view from a beautiful walk along the River Teme. At one point they cited the famous “Mr. Underhill’s” Hotel, a Michelin starred Restaurant. Speculation was that Lunchtime would cost in the region of £200!!

JUNE IN THE GARDEN Hopefully now that we are in June the weather is better and we can begin to enjoy the garden for more hours, barbeque anyone?

The threat of frosts should have passed so it is safe to plant out summer bedding and to put hanging baskets up. Water the bedding before planting and then again after planting, and keep moist. If you have newly planted shrubs and trees then keep an eye on them and water if necessary. Sweet peas should be beginning to flower, to encourage more blooms cut the flowers as they appear. Stake tall or floppy herbaceous perennials. Keep the new shoots of climbing plants tied into their supports. There should be a bit of early veg about, potatoes, strawberries and salad crops etc. Continue to side shoot tomatoes. Sow some late runner beans to harvest in September. If you have a greenhouse keep it well ventilated and shaded. There is shading fabric available as well as a white wash to put on the glass. Check plants daily and water as necessary. Keep humidity levels up to help combat Red Spider Mite. If you have a new lawn or newly laid turf keep it moist. If we have a prolonged dry spell raise the blade on the mower to reduce stress on the grass. At the time of writing we do not know what the weather has in store for us this year it may be worth giving a thought to water conservation. Water butts are relatively inexpensive and the water collected is perfectly adequate for watering the garden. Also, as I mentioned last month, consider an irrigation system for worry free holidays. They are easy to install and save a lot of work. Hopefully June will be warm and sunny and we can enjoy the fruits of our labour.
