POLICEMATTERS Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 19 January and 18 February 2014 inclusive. The figures this period have shown a promising decrease in all areas, and with the help of all residents and the continuing Police operations and general patrols in the area hopefully this trend will continue. This month we can offer some good news but also some rather disturbing news. The good news first – and that is the fact that a male has been arrested and is currently on Police bail pending further investigations following a walk in burglary on Leicester Rd recently. This is good work not only by police but also the victim who was able to offer a good description of the offender. Now for the rather disturbing news…. sadly we have received a report of 2 cats being injured by what is believed to be air gun pellets. This despicable crime occurred in the Rosebery Rd area of the village between the 13th and 19th of January 2014. An air gun pellet was actually removed from one of the cat’s legs, and fortunately both cats survived. This is obviously a very disturbing incident for cat and owners alike, as not only did it cause distress to the cats and their owner but it also incurred vet bills leaving the owners out of pocket. If anybody has any information about this crime then please contact the investigating officer –
PC 1841 Stu Parker – on the telephone number 101 and key in his collar number 1841 to leave a message. Finally, could I request all parents to pass on important message to their children regarding the unsafe act of entering a disused soon to be demolished factory unit on Gladstone St, Anstey. Some residents may remember the factory as the old COSTELLO factory that is situated at the Cropston Rd end of Gladstone St. This factory is VERY unsafe and has hidden drops through the floor levels as well as still live electrics inside. Numerous reports have been received of youths being inside the factory having broken through security, and by doing this they are ~ Risking their lives. All it takes is a child to enter and cause injury to themselves and no-one may even know they are there. So please force home this message – it could save their lives.
Crime Figures 19th January 2014 to 18th February 2014 Burglary Dwelling - 1 Gorse Hill Burglary (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage, Etc) - 2 Freer Way, Link Rd Theft of Motor Vehicle - 0 Theft from Motor Vehicle (inc Attempts) -2 Cropston Rd, Dalby Rd Damage to Motor Vehicle - 4 Hollow Rd, Gladstone St, Forest Gate, Cropston Rd Criminal Damage Dwelling - 0 Criminal Damage (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage Etc) -0

Charity Whist Drives
March: the month of self-harm awareness More than 22,000 children and teenagers were treated in hospital in 2012 for selfharming. And they were just the ones who were discovered.
"At the February meeting of Charity Whist Drives the organiser Derek Farr expressed his appreciation to the small group of regular Whist players for their support and generosity during the last 12 months which has enabled a gift of £100.00 to be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Research Fund.
Self-harming has been called the new anorexia. An astonishing amount of young people are cutting themselves. Sadly, unlike anorexia, cutting can be kept secret for much longer. What can possibly be the attraction of causing yourself pain, bleeding and scarring? Many self-harmers seemed tortured by feelings of intense self-hatred and loathing, and say that this is a way of reducing the intense emotional pressure that they feel. Some experts believe that the contemporary craze for tattoos is a part of this desire to seek emotional relief through self-inflicted pain. Whatever is going on, self-harmers are starting ever younger- in 2012 cases involving children under 14 rose by 30 per cent.
Charity Whist Drives are held at 7.30 p.m on the 1st Thursday of every month in the Rothley Centre, Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley. Admission £2.00. Large free car park. All players are welcome to join us and enjoy a good game in a friendly atmosphere"
There is a website www.selfharm.co.uk which is run by Christians, and which gives people information about self-harm, points out helpful organisations, and provides resources such as teaching packs. There is also a forum so that young people can post their stories, poems, and artwork and encourage each other. The site is monitored, to keep it safe.

Anstey Parish Council The Parish Meeting will be held on the 26th starting at 7pm at the Jubilee Hall, this is a meeting of the electorate where residents will have the opportunity to ask questions of the Parish Council. During this meeting there will be a grant funding event, a BigSociety Grant Award from Leicestershire County Council is making this event possible, the Parish Council will be awarding four village groups cheque to the value of £250.00. Anstey Parish Council have finalised the budget for the next financial year 2014/15, in the previous year a grant has been received from Charnwood Borough Council this year it is reduced by 14.6% for the next financial year, we are aware that this grant will be reduced for the next two year, due to Central Funding Government cuts. The Parish Council has considered the impact of this loss of money plus the recognition that Leicester City Council is looking to reduce their spending by £110 million over the next three years. Concerns are raised regarding the continue delivery of services, with all of these points in mind the Parish Council have set a precept which will see an increase of 6.3% on a band D property for Anstey. The recent theatre production of Peter and the Wolf held at the Jubilee Hall was enjoyed by children and parents, this event was FREE due to the lack of interest indicated by ticket sales.
Dates of forth coming Parish Council meeting are: • Tuesday 11th March 2014

Grants for community groups to change shape
Views sought on changes to meals-onwheels service
A £420,000 grant scheme for community and voluntary groups could be launched by the county council in the next couple of months.
The county council is planning to consult on the future shape of the meals-on-wheels service in Leicestershire. Next week’s Cabinet meeting will outline proposals to remove the subsidy it currently provides which would save the authority around £300,000 a year.
Leicestershire’s ruling cabinet is next week set to consider new Shire community funding to replace previous County Council grants as it looks to save around £430,000. The proposals involve a Community Solutions ‘pot’, with grants up to £10,000 available, which could welcome applications from as early as April 1, while a Participatory grant scheme – with up to £2,500 available - is likely to be up and running from the autumn. Pam Posnett, cabinet member for communities, said: “We only approved the budget last week but we want to get moving on this so that community groups can access funding as soon as possible in April. “Groups may be able to use the money for such ventures as transport help, setting up lunch clubs or providing sport activities for teenagers – there’s going to be a stronger emphasis on the young, the vulnerable and the elderly. “That way, the grants can help with prevention and early intervention which, in the longer term, saves the authority the money in providing high-cost services.” The meeting will be webcast, live, from 2pm on Wednesday, March 5th and also available to watch the following day onwards, at www.leics.gov.uk/webcast

Around 270 people receive subsidised meals in their own homes throughout Leicestershire. If approved, users of the service and their carers will be asked for their views over a three-month period from the beginning of April until the end of June. Dave Houseman, cabinet member for adult social care, said that over the past five years, the number of people receiving a subsidised meal through the council had fallen by more than 50 per cent as people explored other options. He said: “I know price rises are unpopular but, in the current climate, we can’t continue to subsidise a service which is being used each year by fewer people. The meals still represent good value for money and this proposal will enable us to continue to deliver the service and meet our savings. “We’ll be phasing in the end of the subsidy for existing users over three years to allow people more time to get used to the proposed increases and we’ll also help people who may want to discuss alternative arrangements.” The meeting will be webcast, live, from 2pm on Wednesday, March 5th and also available to watch the following day onwards, at www.leics.gov.uk/webcast

The team and I had spent months planning and preparing for this day and it was fantastic to see all the participants taking part. The atmosphere on the evening was electric and although the team had worked from 9am through until midnight you couldn’t help but feel energised by all the smiling faces around you. Cropston Road 70 dwellings P/13/2340/2
Marrons have submitted an outline planning application for up to 70 dwellings on the land off Cropston Road. This application was the first on our radar and was submitted in early December 2013.
ABOUT US - Why do we care SAVE ANSTEY was founded by Gareth Williams in November 2013 after being made aware of a proposed building development on GREEN WEDGE near his house in Anstey, Leicestershire. After making friends and residents aware of the proposal SAVE ANSTEY was formed and has since gained momentum and more members who are defending unsustainable proposed developments on GREENFIELD land in their village. Following a community meeting, which saw a massive turnout, the founders’ hopes that this would become a collective movement were realised. The SAVE ANSTEY campaign is now being run by many members from all areas of the village, who will serve as a unified voice to make thier feelings known to the Anstey Parish Council, Charnwood Borough Council and other bodies, to speak with one voice for the village community. What is quite clear to everybody is the unanimous support of the local community for the protection and respect of Anstey’s greatest asset- its countryside setting and gateway to the Charnwood Forest. Please contact us for further information: saveanstey@gwkw.co.uk
www.saveanstey.co.uk We will be writing a monthly column for Your Local, where we intend to keep the ‘village’ up to date with what we are doing and what is happening.
Initially this application was for 65 dwellings but soon increased to 70, this development is planned on green wedge which is currently arable land that is actively being farmed. This piece of land has fantastic unspoilt views to Bradgate Park which will be wiped out if the application is successful, views from Castle Hill Park will also be broken. The location of the field is joined to a flood plain which backs onto Rothley Brook which has a long history of flooding, why do developers insist on building near flood plains?. Anstey also has a huge traffic problem which will only be accentuated by this piecemeal development, 70 dwellings means on average of 154 extra vehicles entering and exiting the village during peak times, the current infrastructure cannot cope. The revised plan is back to 65 houses Young Peoples Facilities These facilities will be located next to a High Voltage Electricity Pylon and a ‘Proposed Sustainable Drainage Attenuation Pond’ adjacent to the bottom field and Rothley Brook which we all know floods on a regular basis (see proposed planning map at www.saveanstey.co.uk/#!cropston-road/cpbq). We also feel that this ‘Young Peoples Facility’ will only benefit the Children moving into the proposed estate as Cropston Road is such as fast and dangerous road to cross, with average speeds in access of 38mph. Is this really a suitable place for Children to play? For further information, please download our 'how to object' leaflet available at www.saveanstey.co.uk

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate. Proposed Development Update. I have again been involved in supporting local residents against the number of development sites within the Anstey Parish. I was pleased to see there is now local media attention on the issues that the number of piecemeal development sites would cause to the local environment and highway capacity if all of these sites were granted planning permission. Most of my time this month has been focused on the Cropston Road and Gynsill Lane proposed developments. In my last report I stated that the Gynsill Lane application had been resubmitted by the developer. There is also a proposal to enhance the footpath between Gynsill Lane and Groby Road/Millfield Close. I understand this is to overcome the sustainability issues that the development was refused permission by the Planning Committee at Charnwood Borough Council. I have now walked this footpath across the flood plain, in my view, it would be difficult to make this a safe route for children to walk to the Latimer Primary School throughout the year. would be grateful if residents have any recent photographs of flooding in this area they could e-mail them to me. I have had discussions with officers about the impact these piecemeal developments are having on the capacity of the highway, with many more vehicles on our village roads, this not only has an impact on Anstey but also the surrounding villages within my Division. Inspector Appointed to Consider Charnwood’s Core Strategy. I am pleased that we seem to be moving forward with this important strategy, which in my view , will help to reduce the piecemeal developments we are seeing in my Division at this time. An independent inspector has been appointed by the government to consider Charnwood Borough Council’s blueprint for future development growth within the Borough. Kevin Ward BA (HONS) MRTPI from the Planning
Inspectorate will scrutinise the Council’s Local Plan Core Strategy. Initial hearing sessions have been proposed for three days between March 19/20th and will be held in public at Loughborough Town Hall. The initial hearings will focus on the Council’s duty to co-operate and assessment of housing numbers. The plan has been developed in light of evidence and extensive consultation over the last eight years to identify the main areas of proposed development, these being: West of Loughborough, north of Hamilton/east of Thurmaston, north of A46 at Birstall and Shepshed. For more information about the public hearings visit the Council’s dedicated Local Plan site at http://localplan.charnwood.gov.uk Signing up to Support the Armed Forces. Charnwood Borough Council’s commitment to supporting current and former service people has been sealed by signing the Armed Forces Covenant at a special event attended by members of the Council, the Armed Forces and the Royal British Legion. Lt. Col. Richard Pope said “the signing of the Armed Forces Community Covenant formally recognises the existing relationship with our local communities. It promotes a wider understanding of what we do when we are serving and it helps our people to be better understood when they leave the services and their transition back to civilian life in the community”. The Covenant includes: Provide the most upto-date advice and support to injured personnel who resettle in Charnwood: Signpost personnel and their families to community services: discount corporate membership at Charnwood’s three leisure centres and meet annually with Armed Forces representatives to review the progress of the Covenant. Home to School Transport Consultation. The County Council is proposing a new transport policy due to the growth of academy schools and secondary age range changes. Currently the Council provides statutory free
transport to children living more than two miles away from their catchment primary school, or three miles away from their catchment secondary school. This policy has been complicated by the development of academy schools with different, often overlapping catchment areas, some of which have been created by age range changes. This means many children are now eligible to attend a number of different schools. The consultation is now seeking views on new proposals for home to school transport, which includes only providing free transport to the nearest available academy or maintained school if it is over two miles for children in primary education, or over three miles for children in secondary education. The proposal is to continue to provide discretionary travel for those ages 16+ at a charge of £425 per year but only to their nearest school. Please submit your views by 12th March, hard copies of the consultation are available by calling 0116 3050002 or by e-mail transportassessments@leics.gov.uk. More information can be found on line at www.leics.gov.uk/school_college_transport.
Anstey Library. I thought I would let you have early information on how the County Council wishes to go forward with proposals to keep community libraries open. It is recognised that the role and function has changed significantly, this offers opportunities for communities and Parish Councils to work with the County Council to ensure that local facilities could be retained CLEA CARPET & UPHOLSTERY to provide not only library services but other community activities.

The County Council is keen to explore such a solution rather than closing library facilities. It is proposed to consult with the public and other stakeholders (April – June) on proposals for the community to become more involved with the running of their local library. Anstey Library will be included in the consultation exercise. This will include dialogue with the community, Parish Council, as well as any other group or organisation which might want to become involved. It is intended as part of the consultation / engagement that the County Council hold some specific Parish Council events / workshops where discussion can take place about support that will be available and clarify any issues. I am very keen to see the library service in Anstey continuing for the benefit of local residents and families. Therefore I will do all I can to have a satisfactory outcome for future users of this service. Singing Workshop Day. I know we have many keen singers within my Division, therefore I thought some residents may be interested in a Singing Workshop Day at Snibston Discovery Museum, Ashby Road, Coalville, on Sunday 16th March 2014, 10.00am until 4.30pm. This is an opportunity to sing great choruses from the Messiah and perform selected movements with a professional orchestra. There are two workshop groups to suit singers of all experience. The workshop day will be led by Angela Kay and Alex Patterson, both experienced choral directors and conductors whose informal, inclusive and entertaining approach to choral singing is sure to make the day an enjoyable one for all.
Borough blitz to tackle enviro-crime is a success!
DOG fouling and litter in hotspot areas were slashed by a third during a Charnwood Borough Council enviro-crime crackdown. The Council’s three-month Don’t Muck Around campaign helped cut dog fouling by 32% in a record nine areas across the Borough and litter by 37% in three hotspots. As part of the crackdown, enforcement officers also issued 35 fixed penalty notices to offenders for a range of environmental offences. The Council also recorded a six per cent increase in awareness of Duty of Care offences - where householders can be fined for failing to responsibly get rid of waste from their homes. Councillor Jane Hunt, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, said: “Once again the Don’t Muck Around campaign has helped to reduce incidents of environmental crime across the Borough, through education and enforcement.
“The Council is committed to ensuring Charnwood is clean and tidy for residents and visitors, and we will continue to work towards driving down incidents. “This year we focused on a record nine hotspot areas following feedback from our residents, so I am really pleased we can report a reduction in incidents across the three campaign strands. “The reduction in the instances of dog fouling in the hotspots is particularly encouraging. Please could I, on behalf of local residents, thank those people who have changed their behaviour and now clean up after their pet. Your help in improving the area is appreciated.” The campaign ran for three months, from September 27, 2013, to December 20, 2013, and featured a ‘Bin it to Win it’ game in Loughborough Town Centre and saw Loughborough Town Hall’s panto villain ‘Cesspit’ fined for dropping litter in the street.
You can enrol on line at www.music-for-everyone.org/snibston. The workshop day costs £10 this includes all refreshments (including lunch) and music.
The Council also produced a trilogy of tongue-in-cheek ‘public information’ films to promote how to responsibly get rid of dog foul, litter and household waste. Officers monitored hotspot areas before and after the campaign to see what impact the education and enforcement work had on offences. Dog fouling hotspots covered Rothley, Loughborough, Barkby, Queniborough, East Goscote, Woodhouse, Mountsorrel, Sileby and Birstall.
If you need to contact me on any issue write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 0HH e-mail david.snartt@leics.gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804.
To help with education, the Council also introduced an online tool to help residents plot the poo in their area, and the location of nearby dog and litter bins. All reports of dog fouling now featuring on www.my.charnwood.gov.uk.

Bradgate View, a new 5 star luxury cat hotel, will be opening in Thurcaston in April 2014. Proprietors Julie and Nicola are lifelong cat lovers, both getting their first kittens when they were very young. They now have two Siamese, Olli, a laid back lilac point and Luna, a lively blue point. "They are adorable and they have us twisted around their little toes." We understand how besotted cat lovers can be with their cats. It is very difficult to leave your precious pets when you go away, so much so that some people don't go on holiday at all. The worry about whether they are comfortable, warm and safe is so great it can spoil your holiday. We know that feeling, we have been there ourselves. We want to provide our guests with a clean, safe and comfortable environment. Somewhere we would be happy to leave Olli and Luna. We have had our cat hotel designed for us to our specifications. It is a small, exclusive hotel where guests get lots of care and attention. There are six suites in total, four doubles and two family suites. For larger families we have interconnecting suites with room for six. Each suite is individually decorated with bright, colourful pictures of our beautiful Charnwood parks and woodlands. For example "The Swithland suite." One thing we really want our guests to enjoy is a warm and cosy bedroom. Older, frail cats and certain breeds, such as Sphynx, need to be kept warm. Because of this we have invested in thermostatically controlled heating which we can adjust to meet our guests needs. Everything we provide, from the cosy beds and blankets, to the stimulating toys and activity centres, are chosen with the comfort and happiness of our guests in mind. We feel confident that anyone who visits Bradgate View will be very happy for their cats to stay with us. If anyone has any questions or would like to come and see us, please call Julie and Nicola on 0788 022 3241 or visit our website for more information and photos. www.bradgateview.co.uk

FEBRUARY’S NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW WHEN TO RING 999 OR 101 I know that some of you wonder when you should ring these two numbers. I hope this will help. 999 Is for emergencies only. • When you think either yours or anybody else’s life is in danger. (someone threatening you; or a person being threatened or assaulted for example) • If you see something that you think is suspicious (someone looking at vehicles and trying door handles, someone underneath them at night) • If you see someone in a house and you know the person is out or on holiday • If you witness a crime actually taking place (person climbing through house window, smashing car window for example) 101 This number is to report less urgent crime or disorder and for general police enquires: • If your car has been stolen • If your property has been damaged • When you suspect drug use or dealing • To give the police information about crime in your area • To report cases of Anti-Social behaviour Calls to 101 from landlines and mobile networks cost 15 pence per call.
CHARLES DRIVE I hope everyone has now received their welcome packs and have displayed their stickers on doors or windows. There are only four members who signed up in September who have yet to receive theirs. When I have been round you have either been out or haven’t heard me knocking on the door. I will try and come round again soon. I am still waiting for someone to volunteer to take over from James and be your Coordinator. If you are interested in this position please get in touch. OUR WEB SITE Anstey NHW have their own website, which includes information on which streets are covered or have been covered by a NHW scheme. If you are new to the area or street you can log on and discover if you are living in a NHW scheme or not. Information about the Youth Cafe, that meets every Friday in the St Mary’s Church Rooms and other important information can be found on this web site. www.GoAnstey.co.uk OTHER USEFUL WEB SITES Now that Christmas has been and gone for another year and you have unwrapped and used your new electrical gadgets, now is the time for thinking about keeping them safe and secure. You can either mark them with a marker pen or Smartwater. With the marker
pen you have to put your house number and postcode. With Smartwater you just dab it on, and you get stickers to put on to let people know they are marked. This makes it more difficult for anyone to either sell or pass on these items. Also if they are stolen the Police can trace these items back to their owners. Smartwater can be purchased from me for a one off payment of £20. If purchased via the Smartwater website it is £60 per year. Or if you prefer to go to www.immobolise.com you can register your items for free. To keep in touch with all the latest Police news and scams then try out and register on: www.neighbourhoodalert.co.uk This is operated by the Police or www.ourwatch.org.uk which is operated by the NHWN (national) If you would like to get in touch with me for any reason my details are: Phone 0116 2365745 or email diane@ansteynhw.co.uk

On Thursday 20th February Mrs. Jan Kirkham our Deanery Leader, gave a fascinating talk entitled “1940 and all that”. The Channel Islands were occupied by Nazi Germany for much of World War II, from 30 June 1940 until the liberation on 9th May 1945. The Bailiwick of Jersey and Bailiwick of Guernsey are two British Crown dependencies in the English Channel, near the coast of Normandy. The Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles to be invaded and occupied by German forces during the war.

Jan featured members of her family as the backcloth to life and events at the time when the Germans took over the Island of Guernsey. Like the children on the mainland of Britain, their children were evacuated to different parts of Britain up as far as Glasgow. Their experience was that the families where they were sent, were kind and welcoming. The time on the Island for the adults, however, was a matter of survival and their Faith was the most important factor Fundamentally there was little active “resistance” on Guernsey unlike Jersey, and the Germans felt there was little threat to their occupation. Nevertheless, there was a great deal of hardship and severe rationing and it was many years before the way of life became nearly normal, but never the same as before the Occupation. Jan Kirkham was thanked for a very thought provoking and informative talk which resulted in an exchange of the Members’ War experiences both sad and very amusing! Our next meeting will take place in the Harrison Room, All Saints Church, Thurcaston at 7.30pm on March 20th, when our Rector, Revd. David McDonough is to take our Lent Service. Do come along and join us. We have very enjoyable Meetings and you will be made most welcome.

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY The February 10th’s Meeting centred on the AGM, wherein there was much discussion on the previous year’s activities and events; the happy atmosphere, indicated to the Committee, that we are providing adequate interest and a happy atmosphere month on month. Sadly we have lost a few Members through illness, disability and death, but are hopeful that the Programme for 2014 will be of interest and encourage new Members to join us when you will receive a very warm welcome.
Pride of Charnwood Youth Awards Ceri Oxman is a volunteer for Go-Getta CIC and helps out at the Anstey Youth Cafe every Friday night.
Following through the business of the AGM, we were treated to a very merry activity session entitled “Why not try something different” which consisted of musical activity encouraging fitness of most of the body whilst seated, This item was so thoroughly enjoyed that several Members requested a return visit. Claire Orbell runs a “fitness” Club in Wigston, and is able to sell DVDs for use at home at a very nominal price, to continue the maintenance of what we had learnt. Claire is gifted with a very pleasant voice and encouraging amusing manner. In conclusion to the afternoon we enjoyed a variety of Cakes with our Tea, to celebrate Mesdames. Diane Rouse and Gill Jefferson’s joint birthday. These ladies had also provided a touch of Spring to the Meeting Room with the provision of vases of Spring flowers which were very much appreciated by the Membership. Our next Meeting on Monday 10th March, will feature Mr. Brian Kibble who will continue his very interesting illustrated talk “All about Anstey and area from the 1800s onwards” you will remember and learn a considerable amount!! Do try to come along. Meetings take place at 2.15pm at the Cropston Evangelical Chapel Station Road,Cropston.on the 2nd Monday every month. To find out more about The Monday Club, please ring me on 0116 2363467. I have an answerphone, so if I am not available, please leave a message and telephone number and I will return your call.

Film Presentations From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council
This was just one of the questions which taxed our brains at our January meeting when Mick Eaton from the Leicester Parks Department ran a gardener’s quiz to open our new year. We all found the questions very hard until we got the answers and realised that we did know a lot more than we first thought and a bit more imagination would have earned us higher scores!! What a strange winter we are having! At the time of writing we have had no snow and precious few frosts. The ground is sodden and plants have their roots in water which can’t be doing them any good. There is nothing we can do but wait and see what happens. Does it mean, however, we will be plagued by pests not killed off by the usual cold weather or is Mother Nature lulling us with a false sense of security before hitting us with a really long cold spell like she did in 1963? Dr Andrew Ward will talk to us about ‘Delightful Daisies’ on February 25th and our March meeting is about healthy eating aspects of fruit and vegetables. Our speaker, David Thornton is long-time secretary of the National Vegetable Society. We are very pleased to be able to attract speakers of renown whose expertise brings them national recognition and we look forward to bumper attendance. We have welcomed a large number of new members this year and will be pleased if others want to join us. If you are interested in our activities just contact the secretary (tel. 242452 or e-mail 01530242452@talktalk.net) , or come to one of our meetings to see how you like it before making a commitment (£2 for visitors). Alternatively give us a ring and ask for a copy of our programme for the coming year and we will be pleased to send one to you. PS The answer is (c)

In February's "The Great Gatsby", there were gorgeous costumes depicting the excesses of the 1920's New York and spectacular production design. Writer, Nick Carraway, fell under the spell of his neighbour, the mysterious Jay Gatsby. Among the super rich were their illusions, their loves and their deceits. We were captivated. need",
Captain Philips will be shown on Friday March 14th and lasts 134 minutes. Played by Tom Hanks, Captain Philips was on an unarmed trading boat heading for Mombasa, Kenya. The boat was hijacked by armed Somali intruders. This film is an action-packed powerful drama. It is based on Richard Philips' book, "A Captain's Duty", and it is all true!
Philomena will be shown on April 11th and lasts 98 minutes. This British film is a moving true story about one woman's quest to right a terrible wrong. Philomena is played remarkably by Dame Judi Dench. She and the journalist, played by Steve Coogan, form a beautiful relationship as he investigates her son's disappearance. "Sunshine on Leith" will be shown on May 9th. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £4-50 and concessions are £4. The price includes refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets can be purchased via the parish office 0116 236 7626 or at the door.

€ ‚ On Tuesday 18th February we were treated to ƒ„ƒ €…†ƒ an excellent, beautifully illustrated presentation by Andrew Swift (Honorary Visiting Fellow, Geology Department, Leicester ‡ € ‚
Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society University), entitled “The Parish Churches of Leicestershire: Thurcaston and its Neighbours. € ˆ Andrew began by explaining that his interest in churches from 32 years spent as …‰ƒ†Š stemmed a geologist, especially relating to the ‹ŒŒ‹Œ
architecture and materials, such as local Ž  ‘ ˆ stone, used in their construction. Also, parish  churches are an integral part of our heritage and irrevocably linked to social evolution, so with this in mind, Andrew decided to … compile a book about the parish churches of …‰ƒ†Š ‘ † ‰ ’ Leicestershire. During a five year period, he “ “ “ ” visited 316 Leicestershire churches that are still in regular use for worship, in order to research ƒ ƒ ƒŠ‹ ƒ’ their history and to take photographs. His resulting, superbly illustrated book, with himself as the publisher, is now printed in two volumes and he has also produced a companion volume about Rutland churches. The churches in our locality are examples of the entirety of his book.

Rothley: the church of St. Mary and St. John, built of Charnwood stone, dates from the 13th  / 14th centuries, with some evidence of a previous Norman structure, but it has also undergone a Victorian restoration. Possibly dating from the 10thC, there is a fine example of an Anglo-Saxon cross in the churchyard. Within the church, special features include • ‰ ‡ the wonderful Norman font (unique in
… Leicestershire), the 15thC screen which shows
some signs of Victorian intervention and some – wall tablets and tomb chests, ranging in date from the 16th to the mid-17th centuries. One  particularly interesting memorial is inscribed with the deceased person’s last will and testament.
Non-uniform day
 — Wanlip: the church of Our Lady and St. Nicholas price. is constructed of Charnwood stone and granite. An interesting feature of its structure is some early, rare perpendicular windows and there is an intriguing sandstone statue within the church. The churchyard ƒ has some fine examples of Swithland slate  gravestones, with the earliest dating from the 1700’s.
Quiz nights
Birstall: the mediaeval church of St. James the Great, mainly of Charnwood stone ‚ construction with some sandstone, dates from –  the 13thC, with possible 10thC influence.
However, to accommodate the growing needs of the congregation in the 1960’s, a major extension was added which, externally, is a total contrast to and out of keeping with the original. Internally, the well-cared-for church has a variety of artefacts, such as an Anglo-Saxon carving of, possibly, a hunting dog; a beautiful Victorian carved memorial; unique remnants of a Saxon wooden screen, secured within a Saxon window frame and an interesting font, the upper part of which is most probably Norman. Worthy of special mention are some fine examples of the work of the renowned Leicestershire stained glass artist, Theodora Salusbury (1875 – 1956). Stocking Farm: St. Luke’s is a 20thC (1960’s), brick-built church where the architecture makes impressive use of curves which are pleasing to the eye. The building took five years to complete and was undertaken by people from the local community – even the Vicar learnt how to lay bricks – so the church is greatly valued.
Tournaments
Beaumont Leys: opened in 1985, Christ the … King is another brick-built, 20thC church, designed not only for religious worship, but also to facilitate a wide range of amenities for the local community. The building  incorporates a tower-like structure, with a cross denoting the purpose of the building and the church’s position, in close proximity to the nearby shopping centre, makes it convenient › for those who choose to worship there or use it for secular activities.
Variety shows Â
Anstey: standing in its prominent position on the rise of the hill, St. Mary’s church has evidence of a mediaeval structure over a Norman base and more restoration was … carried out in the 13thC. The church was  rebuilt in the mid-19thC when the Victorians were inspired to recreate Gothic stonework, although St. Mary’s does still retain some of its original architectural features. There are some fine examples of gravestones and memorials in the churchyard, including one headstone that still bears some clearly-inscribed death  symbols, a common practice for gravestones in the Victorian era. Death was depicted by a variety of symbols such as a skull, the angel of death, a serpent, an hour glass, etc.

Swithland: St. Leonard’s is a much-cherished œ and immaculately-kept church, which has ž ‚ had a discrete, modern extension to provide
additional facilities and amenities for the congregation. The church has some unique and rare 14thC, porthole windows, as well as its beautiful 18thC font, pulpit and marvellous Swithland slate wall tablets. Thurcaston with Cropston: the origins of All Saints’ church are Saxon, but the present church dates from soon after the Norman conquest – only the original Norman south doorway remains. The church is constructed of granite and slate rubble-stone dressings and has a Swithland slate roof. There have been a number of alterations throughout the centuries and the late 14thC (or early 15thC) spectacular timber-framed, perpendicular nave roof is an unusual type in Leicestershire. Approaching the church along the path and looking upwards, evidence of the timber framing can be seen externally at roof level. The stained glass in the east window (the original window being the work of the 15thC stained glass artist, John Thornton, who created the great east window of York Minster) has had a chequered life and › eventually, in 1972, the only remaining glass  was refashioned to its present form by glaziers from York Minster. The screen in the north aisle dates from the 13thC and the one at the entrance to the bell tower from the 15thC. Likewise, the stone font is from the 15thC. › Among the attractive wall-mounted – memorials in the chancel is the 19thC ˆ  monument commemorating Bishop Hugh Latimer who was born in Thurcaston. Initially he was of the Roman Catholic faith, but diverted to Protestantism, an allegiance for which he was burnt at the stake in the turbulent times of the 1500’s. The most recent extension to the church, opened in 2008, is the Harrison Room, a much appreciated facility providing an  office, meeting room, kitchen and toilet.
