A Great Event and a Great Success That’s how the Anthony Nolan representative described the bonemarrow matching event held at the Nomads ground on the 9th of April. The object of the exercise was to try to find a match for John Sutherington, our local Borough and Parish Councillor. 43 new young donors agreed to “Spit for Sutty” and join the National Bone-marrow Register. The Anthony Nolan reps were particularly pleased that the majority of potential donors were lads. (Apparently, it’s usually the other way round, with girls being first to volunteer). Plus, they said that, in the last 3 weeks, they’ve had a 47% increase in online registration in the area, compared to this time last year. I was very pleased to see the great level of support for the event on the day. A lot of cake was consumed and the raffle was a great success.Plus Dan Greaves, the Paralympic Discus Silver Medallist was on hand to offer his support for the event. (Dan used to live in Anstey and his family still does). The photo above shows Dan on the right with (from left to right) Gemma (John’s daughter) Tamsin (John’s step grand-daughter) and Sarah Roulstone from Anthony Nolan. It was great to see that John’s family were there in force to support the event; (and they did eat a lot of cake!) The event raised over £500. But that wasn’t the end of it. Micky Wilkes and Trish Hopewell held a vinyl evening at the Nomads on the 11th and that also raised more donations. Hence, I’m pleased to report that a cheque for just under £600 has been sent to the Anthony Nolan organisation. Can I say a big Thank You to all of the volunteers who helped out at the event on the 9th. Plus we mustn’t forget the generosity of the Anstey Nomads for allowing us to use their facilities. Another very big Thank You to them. But the really good news is that a potential match has been found for John and he’ll be going into the Royal shortly to start the necessary procedures. So good luck to him and let’s all keep our fingers crossed that all goes well. Martin Broomhead - Chairman of Anstey Parish Council

Unless something dramatic happens, it looks as though we will have been totally free of snow for the entire winter. I must admit I cannot remember that happening before. All the spring flowers are out and the display of colour this year is quite stunning. It reminds us that this is one of the reasons we become gardeners in the first place.

Our speaker in March was David Thornton, secretary of the National Vegetable Society who told us all about the new findings on the adage of ‘ five-a-day’ for healthy living. The thought of this increasing to seven or even nine was a revelation and we were even more surprised to see the things we had learnt on the Tuesday splashed all over the news two days later! Tickets are now available for our celebrity event in the autumn. On November 4th Adam Frost will be coming to Newtown Linford. He has already won gold medals at Chelsea for garden design on four occasions (perhaps five by the time he comes to speak to us!!!) and is now one of the newly established experts in this subject. He appears on our screens at regular intervals and has a reputation as a fascinating speaker with an innovative gardening brain. As last time, when Christine Walkden came to our village, we will invite members of other gardening clubs and interested visitors to join us. Tickets will cost £10 and are available from the secretary (see below for contact numbers). We will also be offering special group rates and details of these can be obtained from the secretary.

Town Charity awards record grants. At the recently held grants meeting of the Anstey Town Charity some £3,630 was awarded to 17 local and associated groups. This is the highest amount ever awarded by the Charity, double that given only 6 years ago. Chairman, Mr M Tedd, commented that the Charity has only been able to do this as a result of the pro- active effort made by the Trustees to encourage local bodies and individuals to make donations. A special tribute was made to Councillor John Sutherington for his efforts in spreading the word about the work of the charity which has lead to a number of donations. Many local groups have benefitted. The charity, which has investments with the Charities Official Investment Fund, is not allowed to re-invest income received from them. It can however invest income deriving from donations. All of its COIF income must be given to the people of Anstey. During the last 10 years the Charity has given grants totalling over £22,000 to some 30 local groups. You may have been part of one of these groups, has your group considered making a donation, no matter how little, towards our work on behalf of the community? For the future. Likewise we would like to hear from individuals who would like to benefit the people of Anstey through a legacy, funeral collection or even as a result of a wedding anniversary or special birthday celebration when gifts are not wanted. A donation to the Anstey Town Charity is a donation for the future. For information on applying for a grant or to make a donation contact ken Schofield on 0116 220 7552.

Anstey WI Anstey WI recently enjoyed their annual meal, a chance to go out and be waited on. The photographs show them at the table. At the last meeting, speaker Dorothy Porter presented her “Puppet Parade.” Dorothy was a librarian and storyteller, so her talk was thoroughly researched and told in interesting fashion. An avid collector, she owns 700 puppets, of all types and origins. She was constantly diving into a bag to bring out ever more breath-taking examples. Most touching was Elmer the patchwork elephant who caused a young man with major special needs to move and try to speak for the first time ever. The far eastern puppets were particularly impressive for their colour and intricate craftsmanship. On Saturday 14th May we are going on a coach trip to Cheltenham, with a stop in Evesham on the way. We take husbands, partners and friends along and would welcome villagers to join us. We leave Anstey at 8am and should be back around 5.30 – 6pm. The cost is £15 per person. Please contact Marian Driver on 0116 2368643 if you are interested in going. The WI meets on the second Wednesday of each month except July at the Jubilee Hall in Stadon Road, Anstey at 7.30pm. We are actively seeking new members. Ladies, why not come as a visitor to see whether you like what we have to offer? Our next meeting is on 14th May, when we shall be discussing a resolution for the national federation’s annual meeting, on encouraging organ donation. There will also be a quiz, and our annual craft, cookery and flower arranging competitions. We are a friendly group who will make you feel welcome. More information is available from Sheila Timms on 0116 2122443.

Connor Awarded a 4 year Soccer Scholarship in the USA

Film Presentations From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council

Connor has been awarded a 4 year Soccer Scholarship to attend William Baptist University in Arkansas USA from August this year. Aswell as playing 'international soccer' he will be majoring in PE & Sports Coaching while he's there. His conference (league) includes teams from Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri and Illinois so he will be touring the southern states while he's there. He is currently a student at Groby Community College where he's studying for his A levels. He has always been a keen sportsman representing his schools/college in various different sports and is also an avid snowboarder. But his first love is football - after spending several years playing for local teams as a formidable goalkeeper, he's just spent his first complete season on pitch, playing for both Anstey Nomads U18 team and Groby U18 team. He is due to fly out to Arkansas on 11 August - a day after he gets back from a 4 week charity expedition to Kenya with Camps International. Connor has been fundraising for the 'once in a lifetime' charity trip for the past 18 months and didn't realise both opportunities would be presented at the same time - while there he will be taking part in conservation projects, which involve him learning to scuba dive and community development work, including building a school for the local children. His fundraising has included a sponsored 'Snowboard down Everest', a tribute band night , competing in the 10 km Avalanche Run in freezing conditions and making hundreds of jars of chilli jam! Although he's only a few hundred pounds off his £4000 target, if anyone would like to make a donation to this worthwhile cause, please contact Connor directly at connorbryan18@sky.com. Or take a look at his charity fundraising page on Facebook - Connor Bryan's Fundraising - Camps International. All in all an exciting few months are ahead for Connor and as a family, we are extremely proud of what he's achieved. His scholarship has been awarded for both his football and academic success and the college are also proud of his achievements both on and off the pitch. Well done Con - we're going to miss you!

April's film presentation was a sell-out, Dame Judi Dench gave a compelling performance with deep emotion in "Philomena". A touching relationship formed between her and the conscientious journalist played by Steve Coogan. The true story certainly pulled at our heart strings as we followed the search for her long sought-after son.

“Sunshine on Leith" will be shown on Friday May 9th and lasts 100 minutes. This romantic comedy is an upbeat happy musical with many songs by the Proclaimers. Two friends return to Scotland from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. They again enjoy their girlfriends' company while Davy And Liz's parents celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. However, there emerges a dark secret from the past.

"Twelve Years a Slave" will be shown on Friday June 13th and lasts 134 minutes. June's drama remarkably won this year's Oscar for Best Film. It is based on an incredible true story of one man's fight for survival and freedom in pre Civil War United States of America. When a freed black man is sold back into slavery, he faces cruelty but also unexpected kindnesses. The director, Steve McQueen, has created a masterpiece. “Saving Mr Banks" will be shown on Friday September 12th. Have a good summer! Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £4-50 and concessions are £4. The price includes refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets can be purchased via the parish office - 0116 236 7626 or at the door.

POLICEMATTERS Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 19 March and 18 April 2014 inclusive. The figures this period show that the village has unfortunately suffered from a number of ‘other than dwelling’ breaks, this covers breaks to sheds, outbuildings and garages. As I write this update, however, I am pleased to report that we have not suffered any crime for over 7 days. Whilst spikes in breaks ins to sheds, outbuildings and garages do occur, on this occasion there was a specific method used by offenders to gain entry into the sheds in particular. This often involved the unscrewing of screws and bolts from hinges and removing the actual door from the shed, or unscrewing other security fixings to gain entry. We are now beginning to see this method of entry being used across other areas of Charnwood in similar circumstances. With this in mind, we have been offering appropriate crime prevention advice to the victims of this type of crime when we visit them for follow up enquiries and reassurance. This advice has ranged from simply ‘rounding off’ the screw heads with a drill so that it is not possible to use a screw driver or other tool to remove the screws, to purchasing a dedicated shed / garage alarm to further protect your property and any items within. We have also therefore worked with your Anstey Neighbourhood Watch group and have requested that they purchase a number of Wireless Shed / Garage battery operated alarms, and I am pleased to say that your Neighbourhood Watch Beat Manager, Diane Tillotson, is in the process of purchasing these and she should be able to sell them to residents at a greatly reduced price. If you would like one of these alarms, please contact Diane to register your interest. Diane’s contact details can be found in her Neighbourhood Watch article also published in Your Local magazine. On a positive note, a male has been arrested and charged with the Burglary Other than Dwelling at Fairhaven Farm

following the recovery of a stolen item during a search of his property (not in Anstey). OPERATION UTAH During this review period, Charnwood Police in conjunction with a number of partner government and council organisations have conducted 2 operations in the Charnwood area (specifically the A46 and A6 corridors) stop checking motor vehicles under Operation UTAH. This involved officers stopping moving vehicles for various lower level motoring offences, such as non-wearing of seat belts and driving whilst using mobile phone, and bringing the drivers to a specific holding area where further checks were carried out on both the vehicle and the driver.

19th March 2014 to 18th April 2014 Burglary Dwelling – 1 Bradgate Rd Burglary (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage, Etc) - 15 Princes Cl, Andrew Rd x 3, Charnwood Rd x 5, Cherry Tree Cl, Hollow Rd, Fairhaven Farm, Kitchener Rd x 2, Bradgate Rd Theft of Motor Vehicle – 0 Theft from Motor Vehicle (inc Attempts) – 0 Damage to Motor Vehicle – 0 Criminal Damage Dwelling – 1 Link Rd Criminal Damage (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage Etc) –0

During the 2 day operation, approximately Theft Store – 2 75 vehicles were checked and 10 vehicles Co-op, Londis were seized and taken off the road by Police for varying offences, but Theft Cycle – 0 predominantly the driver having no Theft Property - 0 insurance or driving without correct licence and documentation. One driver was also stopped and arrested for an outstanding burglary. The message to some offending drivers was clear – “NO INSURANCE ~ NO CAR”. This operation will continue in the coming months, not only across Charnwood, but across the whole of the city and county. As always, we would ask all residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activity to Police on 101 or, if you feel a crime is taking place, 999. If you have any information at all about crime please call CRIMESTOPPERS. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. Just call – 0800 555 111 PC 1841 Stu PARKER / PCSO 6662 Phil WRIGHT “Correction to the date for the Car Boot Sale at Martin High School, Anstey, on behalf of Friends of Anstey Martin High School. This event will take place on Sunday 11th May 2014 between 10.00am and 3.00pm”

School Holiday Pattern Set to Stay County schools are set to keep the traditional Leicestershire pattern for terms and holidays, following a consultation. Over 3,000 parents, schools, governing bodies and other groups sent their feedback to Leicestershire County Council after being invited to have a say on different options. A total of 86 per cent of people said they wanted to keep the status quo. The council's cabinet is expected to agree the term dates for the next four academic years at a meeting on Tuesday, 6th May. Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and young people, said: "I'm pleased that so many parents and schools have taken the time to send us their feedback. "We weren't anticipating a huge appetite for change but as the education landscape has changed a lot recently, we wanted to make sure that the term dates are still right for our children and families. "The overwhelming response is that people want to follow the existing pattern." The cabinet meeting will be webcast and can be found at: www.leics.gov.uk/webcast

MAY May is possibly my favourite month at the nursery. Everything is fresh and there is a promise of better weather and sunny days. Beware though of late frosts – tender plants are not safe until the end of the month. If you are growing your own half hardy annuals it is time to harden them off, pop them outside during the day and either cover them well or bring them back into a frost free environment in the evening. Top dress permanent outdoor pots with fresh compost and begin to feed every couple of weeks for healthy growth. Remember that plants in pots are entirely dependant on us for their water at this time of year. It might be time to think about a watering system for them and for your hanging baskets. Although the initial outlay will be in the region of £40 to £50 it is only the price of a couple of hanging baskets. What a shame it is when you have lovingly nurtured your tubs and baskets only to come home from a fortnight’s holiday to find that they haven’t been watered. There is still just about enough time to plant seed potatoes. For those already planted continue to earth up as necessary. Harvest Asparagus and Rhubarb. Thin out direct sown carrots and lettuce etc. Direct sow runner beans. Keep the veg plot well weeded – weeds are the competition for food, light and moisture. Plant tomatoes in the greenhouse. Ventilate well on warm days, damp down when it is hot. We recommend watering no later than lunch time if possible so that there is little excess moisture overnight when the greenhouse is shut up so reducing rotting off. Hang yellow sticky fly traps to monitor whitefly and aphid activity, deal with the little blighters as necessary. May is the ideal month to plant up hanging baskets. There is a myriad of plants available from geraniums and fuchsias to begonias and petunias and loads of others. Have you thought about incorporating a water retaining gel and slow release fertiliser into the compost? If using polythene as a liner don’t forget to make drainage holes about a third of the way up from the bottom. I’m a big fan of solar lights – why not have a couple of spotlights to enhance your plants, tubs or feature?

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not

just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate. Development Plan Suspended for Nine Months. An examination of Charnwood Borough Council's plan for developing the Borough will possibly be suspended for nine months by a government inspector. Planning Inspector Kevin Ward has recommended a postponement of his examination of the Council's Core Strategy to allow for extra time to provide more up-to date evidence of future housing needs across Leicestershire. Following a two day hearing the inspector said the Council had met its duty to co-operate but he required a more up-to date understanding of housing needs for the whole of Leicestershire. All the District Councils in Leicestershire, along with the City Council are already working on assessing and identifying the housing needs throughout the County. The Inspector has indicated this work, when completed may address his concerns, therefore he would like to see this work speeded up.

flood events" Going on to say "there may not be a prior warning of water levels rising or flooding" In my view, This is a high risk proposal to allow primary school children to use these flood plain footpaths to attend school. Once the brook is flooded the water is fast flowing and I believe would be a danger to children crossing the floodplain even with an improved surface on the footpaths. Beacon Hill Play Area Opened. I attended the opening of the Play Area at the Beacon Hill Country Park on the 9th April. The four play pieces were chosen to create an exciting play area which would appeal to a wide age range. The equipment being supplied by a local company specialising in natural wooden play equipment. To help launch the event children from the Woodhouse Eaves village school attended, I am sure they all enjoyed their time playing on the equipment.

In my view, this work on the housing numbers needs to be completed as quickly as possible, as I fear that we will see more piecemeal developments coming forward, such as the ones proposed on green wedges within the Parishes of Anstey and Thurcaston. Update on Planning Applications. I have had meetings and conversations with local residents about the proposed planning applications within Anstey, Thurcaston and Woodhouse. The one that has taken most of my time this last month has been the proposal to improve the public footpaths from Gynsill Lane to Anstey village. I do understand that this may be of benefit for general use of these footpaths, but I have major concerns this will not be a safe route to school for children attending Anstey Latimer Primary School all year round. I have noted the information supplied by the Environment Agency which states "the Rothley Brook in this location floods frequently and at depth, thus the footpath may not be usable in

Council officers have been working closely with the Police who will be responsible for stopping traffic at survey sites. Drivers will be asked a few questions about their journeys; mainly the origin, destination and purpose of their journeys. The surveys have been planned and timetabled tominimise disruption, interviews will normally take about two minutes to complete. New Website, Rural Broadband Roll Out Rural communities can now check when they receive fibre broadband by visiting a new website at www.superfastleicestershire.org.uk

Interspersed with the play pieces are three new wooden carvings. The mole, rabbit and toad, these have been carved by Beacon Hill's resident chainsaw carver Peter Leadbeater. The animals were chosen to represent common British wildlife that can be seen within the park boundaries. I am hopeful that this new play area along with the new carvings will add appeal to Beacon Hill, and encourage families to enjoy its charms for years to come.

Leicestershire Roadside Interview Surveys. Over the coming months there will be roadside interview surveys conducted by a survey company on behalf of the County Council to provide up-to-date travel information to update the Leicester and Leicestershire Integrated Transport Model from its existing base year of 2008 to 2014. Transport evidence provided by the Model helps the County and City Councils make the right decisions on future transport investments and the right locations for housing and employment.

The website has a range of information on the Superfast Leicestershire programme which aims to extend high-speed fibre broadband to 96% of homes and businesses in Leicestershire by the end of March 2016. The website includes information on: Benefits of fibre broadband for businesses and households: The timetable for increasing the coverage and plans to increase coverage even further. This project seeks to extend high-speed fibre broadband coverage beyond the existing commercial fibre broadband rollout.

The County Council expects that 54,000 premises will be able to access super-fast broadband speeds of at least 24 Mbps. Have Your Say on Proposed Changes to Libraries. During 2013 Leicestershire County Council announced that it was facing its biggest ever financial challenges. Last year the Council consulted widely about how they should respond to the challenges. Based on the feedback to this public consultation they are aiming to prioritise, as far as possible services for vulnerable people. Clearly, many people value their local library service. The County Council believe that the public are open to ideas about how this service could be delivered differently by the community. Therefore they are consulting the public on the following proposals: Continue to operate the most-used libraries but reduce their opening hours: Support communities to run the other 36 local libraries. If community groups do not come forward, some libraries may close.

A new service is being launched by Alzheimer’s Society at Leicester Royal Infirmary to help people live well with dementia. The Hospital Liaison Dementia Support Service, which launched on Tuesday, April 22, will see three members of staff from the charity working from the hospital in a bid to improve patient experience, reduce time spent in hospital and re-admissions as well as provide valuable information, advice and guidance. The service is centred around the completion of a specialist document developed by Alzheimer’s Society called This is Me, which details things that are important to the person with dementia like food preferences, interests and hobbies. Any person then involved in their care will have easy access to the things most pertinent to their happiness and wellbeing. Jo Rodwell, Alzheimer’s Society dementia support manager in Leicestershire and Rutland said: ““Hospital can be a daunting experience for someone with dementia, who may be experiencing confusion or have trouble communicating. This service is an exciting opportunity to build on the good work that is already going on at the hospital to ensure that people with the condition get the best possible care. We’ll be working closely with staff and patients and we hope that by providing support and information, people will stay in hospital for shorter periods, improving their quality of life and also saving money for the hospital.” Anybody can refer into the service and self-referrals are also accepted. For more information contact Jo Rodwell (Dementia Support Manager) or Sally Grundy (Services Manager) on 0116 231 1111 or e-mail leicestershireandrutland@alzheimers.org.uk.

New detailed map of Charnwood Forest Getting out and exploring Charnwood Forest is about to get a whole lot easier with a new detailed map covering the whole of the area on a single sheet. The colourful 1:25,000 Ordnance Survey based map, designed by award-winning Northamptonshire-based map publisher Global Mapping, shows additional footpaths, bridleways and permissive paths. It also shows public access land and includes information on places to visit etc. It only costs £4.99 and is available to buy locally and online. Publication has been made possible by funding from Leicestershire County Council, Charnwood Borough Council, Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council, North West Leicestershire District Council and the Ramblers Association. Roy Denney, Chairman of the Ramblers, Leicestershire & Rutland Area is also Chairman of the Leicestershire Local Access Forum. In that role he instigated the map and says, ‘As so often seems to be the case wherever you are, if you want to explore Charnwood Forest you find yourself walking off the edge of the OS map. Parts of the Forest are already well-loved by many Leicestershire people, but we hope that this locally centred map will encourage them to explore some of its lesser known corners and bring people in from further afield, boosting the local economy’ The map is currently available from Bradgate Park, with other outlets to follow shortly, or online from www.mapstop.co.uk

WANt tO bECOME A MAStER COMPOStER? The county council is looking to recruit more local residents to be trained as master composters. It’s a win-win situation for all involved – the master composters can develop their interest in gardening while helping to reduce the amount of organic waste which goes to landfill. Master composters can join a wellestablished group and use their own skills and enthusiasm to choose how they would like to raise awareness of the benefits of home composting and encourage more people to home compost. New recruits will be invited to a training weekend at Garden Organic’s base in Ryton near Coventry next month and then be able to donate a minimum of 30 hours of their time over the next 12 months. Pam Posnett, the county council’s Cabinet member for communities, said: “Whatever the master composters choose to do, they’ll have the support of a volunteer co-ordinator as well as a lot of resources to help them too. “There will also be the chance to attend events and roadshows, give talks and presentations, write blogs, set up websites and even start composting clubs – there are so many opportunities to be involved.” Jane Redfearn, of Fleckney, is a current master composter as well as an enthusiastic allotment-holder. She said: “I have learned such a lot through the scheme – and not just about composting but also recycling, reusing and food waste. I’m really glad I became a master composter and would encourage anyone with an interest to sign up.” If you are a Leicestershire resident, aged 18 or over, and would like to find out more, visit: http://www.lesswaste.org.uk/master_composter or call 0116 305 7005.

Timings will be 10.00 – 3.30pm. Charges for Stallholders/Sales:• Cost per 6’ table – under cover The main difference this year is the ‘rental’ cost per 6’ table provided by us. This year unfortunately, due to fast rising costs, we will have to charge £15 per table (with as many as possible situated in the marquees or under one of our own gazebos). • Cover We are just in the process of sorting out new marquees and we undertake to provide as much cover as we possibly can. We will update you in plenty of time before the event. • Your own stand / gazebo? If you would rather bring your own pop-up gazebo and table/salescounter, do please let us know and we can start planning out the site for this year’s event. The cost for a space for your own gazebo – up to 3m x 3m – and bringing your own table/sales-counter - would be £20 in total. Please email me if your gazebo is bigger than this and we can discuss arrangements individually. • Chairs Also with regard to chairs, we will only have a few available as most will be reserved for the Dog Show and agility exhibitors/spectators, and again, if you could bring your own folding chair(s) in the back of the car when you come, that would be great. Please note – if you are a CHARITY – you can have a space for a PR table free of charge (please bring own table). • Exhibitors warmly invited! Please contact me if you could run an activity or bring an interesting exhibit for families to look at (animal, vegetable, mineral or vehicle!) THE SAVE ANSTEY campaign continues to strive to save our ‘Green areas’ within the village. The Charnwood Borough Core Strategy was examined in public by an independent Government Inspector who found that the basis for deciding on the Housing Requirement up to the year 2028 is unsound. The majority of Local Authorities that make up the County have already started on a new assessment for housing needs and the Inspector decided that it is necessary to use this newer information, for the basis of the Core Strategy, but the results of this assessment will not be available until around March 2015. So the upshot of this amendment is that the Charnwood Plan has been put on hold and is unlikely to be adopted before the latter part of 2015. Until that time the National Planning Policy Framework [NPPF] remains the major tool for deciding housing developments.

20

At the heart of NPPF is a ‘Presumption in favour of sustainable development’ That means a developer, after rubbing his hands together with glee, who can prove its development is sustainable is favoured and almost certainly allowed to build, even when the local population doesn’t want it. Proving a development is not sustainable is up to you, the residents of Anstey [in objection letters against planning applications], and our councils and other recognised bodies such as The Environment Agency and LCC Highways. Battles will be won and lost over the coming months, but we must not lose heart. Use your letters to raise the points that can be used by our council officers to STOP the unwanted developments, place our ‘Save Anstey’ posters in your cars and houses. We must keep the campaign visual. When finally our Local Plan (Core Strategy) is in place we will know exactly where we are heading. On 24th April 2014, Charnwood Borough

Planning Committee conditionally approved the modification of the Footpaths and the building of 57 houses on Gynsill Lane. The votes on acceptance were close, only the casting vote of Chair approved the footpath upgrade. Davidsons have now put in a re-plan for phases 2 and 3 on its Groby Road site under Application P/14/0624/2. Objection letters will again need to be submitted, (For more information please see our website www.saveanstey.co.uk). Phases 2 and 3 were shown in our recent breakdown in our list of house builds in the village. So the figure of 628 approx house builds as in our last Local article remains the same. We know difficulties will arise but with your support the majority of these unwanted developments could be quashed.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk THOSE “unlit” LIGHTS? Hmm the 230+ lights that go out in Anstey from Midnight to 5.30am still do? Yep when we put the clocks forward, out came the posse from County Hall to re-adjust the clocks so the lights still went out at the same time. I wonder how much that cost us to do? Guessing at £10 an adjustment that would be over £2,300 for the whole operation. I am endeavouring to find out how much it would have cost to have left things as they were, “Lit until daybreak” Could be interesting? COLD CALLERS? Fed up with them knocking on your door and having to be polite because they are at least trying to earn some money, well you can get help and advice on how to deal with them by calling 08454 040 506 or by emailing:trading.standarda@leics.gov.uk At Charnwood we do have a supply of door stickers, and personal alarms. More information can be obtained by getting in touch with Alison Fadesco (Community Safety) 01509 634901. EMERGING LOCAL PLAN. The Council is in the process of preparing a Core Strategy for the Borough. Full Council back in October 2013 approved the submission of this to the Secretary of State, for the purpose of an examination in public to be held. Initial hearings took place in March 2014 and the Inspector has held that the hearings be suspended for 9 months while further evidence is prepared by the Local Authorities that make up the Housing Market Area, or that the plan be withdrawn. A decision on whether to progress the Core Strategy will not be known for a while. The status of the Core strategy therefore remains as before.

Presently the Core Strategy seeks to focus the majority of new development in and adjoining the larger urban areas of Leicester and Loughborough/Shepshed as these are the places where the majority of higher order services and facilities and the best infrastructure exists. It plans two sustainable urban extensions as a way of dealing with housing need, one west of Loughborough and one north-east of Leicester. It also identifies two directions for growth, one north of Birstall and another adjoining Shepshed. The Sites that are in locations that have a good fit with the urban concentration strategy may expect to be supported in principle. It is important to emphasise that the Core Strategy and its evidence base are material considerations but at this stage in a plans preparation and in the circumstances where its policies have been contested, its policies may only attract limited weight. Hence the reason we must be extra vigilant on any new development that we feel is not appropriate for Anstey it’s surrounding areas. Anstey HAS got talent. No not me I’ve been overlooked for another year but if Leicester’s Engelbert Humperdinck can get selected, and 78 on May 2nd 2014, who knows?? Anstey born Molly Smitten-Downes, 27 will be representing the UK in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. The contest will be held on Saturday May 10th. In Copenhagen, Denmark and broadcast live on BBC1 with Graham Norton commenting. Molly will be singing her own song “Children of the Universe”

The last time the UK won the EST was 1997 in Dublin when Katrina and the Waves scored 227 points with their song “Love shine a light.” 1998 we came runners up in Birmingham to Israel, but since those halcyon nights we have become political no hopers. The first contest in 1956 was won by Switzerland’s Lys Assia with a song called “Refain”. The most popular Euro song of all time was of course… (You tell me?) The Uk have won it on 5 occasions… And Finally, nostalgia… Not many people know this but Engelbert Humperdinck used to sing in a band with my Uncle George Foley, and Derek Wells in the late 50’s called the ”Foeles 4” in and around the Leicester club scene. And but for an argument with a bus driver and a midland red bus Uncle George would have been one of the original Dallas Boys (described at the time as the first boy band.) They continue to perform around the UK despite the death of Joe Smith in July 2012. NB:- I maybe in hospital come the next councillors column in Your local so depending on how I feel depends on what you get… I will be taking my Computer to keep up with things so please keep in touch. It may be a bit of a chore but I’ll do my best.

John J. Sutherington. ☺

Dear All. May I thank you all so much for giving the time to come to the “SPIT FOR SUTTY” day at Anstey Nomads FC. I hope something positive comes from it, if not for me then for someone else, it will have all been worthwhile. I know it took a lot of organising and I know all went well. The volunteers were great. So to all the people who gave raffle prizes to help the Anthony Nolan Organisation and the work it does. Special thanks to Martin Broomhead, and Sarah Taylor for their organisational skills plus Graham Ford for coordinating the Raffle, the Nomads for the use of their facilities, Anstey PC, Anstey Town charity, the cake bakers, and all the other volunteers. Especially my Gemma, and Tamsin Teapot. xx I really wanted to be there myself but I am very susceptible to picking up infections so caution was probably the best option; however I was there in spirit. Lynda handcuffed me to the settee!! Yours Sincerely. John J. Sutherington. ☺

MAY’S NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW SHED ALARMS Due to the spate of shed/garage break-ins we have recently been experiencing, (see Police Matters in this edition), I have managed to obtain a good quality shed alarm. This fixes to the inside of the shed/garage and comes with a free fob and sticker. I will be selling these for £10. I have seen similar alarms being sold for £20. I know some of you have already placed an order either with me or with our local Neighbourhood Policing Team. We will let you know as soon as we receive them. (These are a better quality alarm than those I was previously thinking of buying). If you would like to purchase one of these alarms, then please contact me. My contact details are at the bottom of this article. NHW CO-ORDINATORS URGENTLY REQUIRED We have quite a few NHW schemes that have been set up, and now due to coordinators resigning these schemes are no longer registered with the national NHW. If you live in one of the streets listed below this means that any discount you had received on your house insurance (by being in a NHW scheme) is now void. To ensure you continue

receive these discounts next year please consider being the NHW Coordinator for your road. The schemes that have a vacancy for a NHW coordinator are: • Ashfield Drive • Birkdale Road/Hazelhead Road • Burgin Road • Charles Drive • Holgate Close/Netherfield Road These roles are NOT time consuming, it just means that you are the contact person for your neighbours and the Police, in case of any incidents which occur or someone wants to report anything suspicious and don’t want to contact the police themselves. We also hold a meeting every two months to hear about the latest crime reports and to swap ideas. Please get in touch with me if you are interested in becoming a NHW Co-ordinator for any of these roads. LET’S GET THESE SCHEMES REREGISTERED. NEW AREAS TO BE COVERED IN ANSTEY Now the weather has improved a little and the nights are getting lighter I would like to start setting up more NHW schemes. We only have three streets remaining in the centre of

Anstey which aren’t covered by a NHW scheme, Charnwood Road, James Street and The Close. If anyone is interested in setting up a scheme in these roads and are residents in them, then please get in touch. I will be putting the surveys through peoples’ doors very soon. It states on the form that it will be collected within a certain time frame. If you don’t wish to open the door, or you know you will be out, PLEASE leave them outside for collection. Or just let me know when it will be convenient to come and collect it. This will save both my and your time. NORTH AREA NHW AGM On Wednesday 21st May the North Area NHW (which we are all members of) is holding their AGM in the Jubilee Hall, Anstey starting at 7.30 pm. This year’s speakers are: The new Leicestershire Wildlife Officer, and Temporary Commander for Charnwood nLPU T/INS Paul Harrison (speaking on Neighbourhood Policing in Charnwood). Everyone is very welcome to attend. (You don’t have to live in Anstey to attend). Following a conversation with Phil’s nurse, when his pain became too much to bear, that a bed was made available and his family drove him to LOROS. The volunteers on reception greeted him warmly and immediately took him to the ward.
